Abstract: Hot-electron confinement can build up fields capable of accelerating ions up to MeV energies when an ultrashort 35-fs laser pulse at ∼2×1018 W/cm2 interacts with a small spherical target. Singly charged ions with different masses have similar energies. A simple phenomenological model describes how ultrashort and less-energy-consumptive pulses drive ions to MeV energies. The energetic and spatial-emission characteristics of protons, deuterons and oxygen ions released from water and heavy-water droplets of ∼15 μm in size was determined for this interaction scenario.

203. Berufseinmündung akademisch ausgebildeter Pflegekräfte - Ergebnisse einer Befragung Personalverantwortlicher in stationären und ambulanten Pflegesettings

Abstract: Hintergrund: Seit knapp 20 Jahren ist es in Deutschland moglich Pflege – oftmals weiterbildend – zunachst in Diplomstudiengangen, in den letzten Jahren in Bachelorstudiengange zu studieren. Seit 10 Jahren erfolgt zudem in dualen Pflegestudiengangen unterschiedlichster Organisationsformen eine Integration der beruflichen (generalisierten) Gesundheitspflegeausbildung in ein Hochschulstudium. Im Rahmen von Studiengangsevaluationen bzw. der Qualitatssicherung der Hochschulen erfolgen regelmasige Befragungen zum Berufsverbleib, die insbesondere die Relevanz stationarer und ambulanter Pflegesettings als potentielle Arbeitgeber aufzeigen. Das Pendant dieser Untersuchungen stellt eine Befragung der potentiellen Arbeitgeber dar, sowohl hinsichtlich der tatsachlichen Berufseinmundung bzw. des Bekanntheitsgrades entsprechender Studienabschlusse. Daten/Methodik: Vollerhebung bei allen stationaren (n=150) und ambulanten (n=355) Pflegeeinrichtungen in Hamburg mittels eines standardisierten telefonischen Interviews basierend auf einer Auswertung von Rechercheergebnisssen in CINAHL und PubMed im Herbst 2011. Befragt wurden nach einem Pretest die Personalverantwortlichen in den Unternehmen, oftmals die Verwaltungsleitungen, in groseren Unternehmungen ggf. auch die Personalleitungen. Das Erhebungsinstrument umfasst Fragen zum Bekanntheitsgrad, zur Einstellung zur akademischen Abschlussen und zur Funktion, zu den Tatigkeiten entsprechend qualifizierter Beschaftigter. Die Interviewdauer betrug zwischen 4 und 8 Minuten. Ergebnisse: Die Auswertung erfolgt getrennt fur ambulante und stationare Pflegesettings., Der Response bei ambulanten Einrichtungen betrug 40,8%, somit gingen 145 Einrichtungen in die Auswertung ein. Der Bekanntheitsgrad der Studiengange war bezogen auf die Diplomstudiengange mit knapp 94% am hochsten, mit 75% folgt der Bachelorabschluss Pflege, den Abschluss eines dualen Pflegestudiengangs oder eines Masterstudiums kannte hingegen weniger als die Halfte. In 27, 6% der Einrichtungen waren akademisch ausgebildete Pflegekrafte beschaftigt, wobei immerhin 10 Einrichtungen mehr als eine Pflegeakademikerin beschaftigte erwartungsgemas steigt die Anzahl mit der Beschaftigtenanzahl. Die uberwiegende Mehrzahl (82%) der beschaftigten AkademikerInnen ubte leitende Tatigkeiten aus. Der Response bei stationaren Einrichtungen betrug knapp 35%, somit konnten 52 Einrichtungen befragt werden. Es wurden ahnliche Bekanntheitsgrade wie bei den ambulanten Pflegeeinrichtungen erzielt, allerdings auf etwas geringerem Niveau. Hoher war mit 40,4% hingegen der Anteil der Einrichtungen, die akademisch ausgebildetes Pflegepersonal beschaftigten, wobei dies in der Mehrzahl der Einrichtungen mehr als eine Person war. Tendenziell steigt auch hier die Anzahl der akademisch Ausgebildeten mit der Anzahl der Beschaftigten. Der uberwiegende Tatigkeitsbereich lag hier beim Qualitatsmanagement, allerdings spielt auch Aus-, Fort- und Weiterbildung und Beratung eine zentrale Rolle. Erwahnt werden muss, dass sowohl in einem guten Drittel der befragten stationaren und der ambulanten Pflegesettings anderweitig qualifizierte Akademiker beschaftigt waren. Diskussion/Schlussfolgerung: Sowohl der Bekanntheitsgrad als auch der Beschaftigungsgrad von DiplompflegewirtInnen nimmt in klassischen Pflegesettings zu, dabei dominiert immer noch das stationare Setting. Der Bologna-Prozess ist bei den potentiellen Arbeitgeber noch nicht im notwendigen Umfang angekommen, insbesondere die Abschlusse dualer bzw. Masterstudiengange zeigen – obwohl seit uber 3 Jahren Absolventen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt verfugbar sind – sowohl einen geringen Bekanntheits- und einen deutlich geringeren Beschaftigungsgrad. Fur in dieser Befragung nicht berucksichtigte Krankenhauser, wird dieses Ergebnis voraussichtlich anders ausfallen. In jedem Fall ist es dringend geboten, die aktuellen Studienabschlusse besser in die Praxis zu kommunizieren, gleichermasen mussen weitergehende Untersuchen auch weiterhin die Bildungserwartungen der potentiellen Arbeitsfelder zielgerichtet erheben und in die Studiengangscurricula ubernehmen.

Abstract: In this Letter we report the first results on pi(+/-), K-+/-, p, and (p) over bar production at midrapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5) in central Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV, measured by the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The p(T) distributions and yields are compared to previous results at root s(NN) = 200 GeV and expectations from hydrodynamic and thermal models. The spectral shapes indicate a strong increase of the radial flow velocity with root s(NN), which in hydrodynamic models is expected as a consequence of the increasing particle density. While the K/pi ratio is in line with predictions from the thermal model, the p/pi ratio is found to be lower by a factor of about 1.5. This deviation from thermal model expectations is still to be understood.

Abstract: Recent findings suggest that inborn errors of pyrimidine catabolism are less rare than generally assumed. We propose a complete set of diagnostic methods for these disorders, suitable for the clinical chemistry laboratory, and present relevant reference data. Applications of thin-layer chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, and conventional cation-exchange amino acid analysis lead to detection of various defects in pyrimidine degradation, including the recently described deficiencies of dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase and dihydropyrimidinase. We also illustrate the potential of the methods to analyze for the catabolites expected to be increased in the urine of patients with ureidopropionase deficiency. Possible pitfalls in the diagnosis and ways to prevent misdiagnosis are demonstrated. The methods offer possibilities for clinical chemistry laboratories to extend their diagnostic capacity to the new area of pyrimidine degradation defects.

Abstract: It is rare for young diabetic patients to develop severe complications in the first years of their disease. We describe three patients, aged 14-23 years who developed cataracts and severe retinopathy within one to five years of diagnosis of diabetes. During the same period, one patient developed peripheral neuropathy and a second severe autonomic neuropathy. Rapid development of chronic complications in these patients raises the possibility that there may be a subset of patients with unusual susceptibility to complications. We re-emphasize the need for vigilant monitoring for complications in young diabetic patients, even in the first few years of their disease. In particular, young patients with visual complaints should be evaluated carefully for evidence of treatable eye disease.

Abstract: This study compared the accuracy and precision of four value-added glucose meters.Finger stick glucose measurements in diabetes patients were performed using the Abbott Diabetes Care (Alameda, CA) Optium, Diagnostic Devices, Inc. (Miami, FL) DDI Prodigy, Home Diagnostics, Inc. (Fort Lauderdale, FL) HDI True Track Smart System, and Arkray, USA (Minneapolis, MN) HypoGuard Assure Pro. Finger glucose measurements were compared with laboratory reference results. Accuracy was assessed by a Clarke error grid analysis (EGA), a Parkes EGA, and within 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of the laboratory value criteria (chi2 analysis). Meter precision was determined by calculating absolute mean differences in glucose values between duplicate samples (Kruskal-Wallis test).Finger sticks were obtained from 125 diabetes patients, of which 90.4% were Caucasian, 51.2% were female, 83.2% had type 2 diabetes, and average age of 59 years (SD 14 years). Mean venipuncture blood glucose was 151 mg/dL (SD +/-65 mg/dL; range, 58-474 mg/dL). Clinical accuracy by Clarke EGA was demonstrated in 94% of Optium, 82% of Prodigy, 61% of True Track, and 77% of the Assure Pro samples (P0.05 for Optium and True Track compared to all others). By Parkes EGA, the True Track was significantly less accurate than the other meters. Within 5% accuracy was achieved in 34%, 24%, 29%, and 13%, respectively (P0.05 for Optium, Prodigy, and Assure Pro compared to True Track). Within 10% accuracy was significantly greater for the Optium, Prodigy, and Assure Pro compared to True Track. Significantly more Optium results demonstrated within 15% and 20% accuracy compared to the other meter systems. The HDI True Track was significantly less precise than the other meter systems.The Abbott Optium was significantly more accurate than the other meter systems, whereas the HDI True Track was significantly less accurate and less precise compared to the other meter systems.

Abstract: SR58611A is a selective beta(3)-adrenoceptor (Adrb3) agonist which has demonstrated antidepressant and anxiolytic properties in rodents. The present study confirmed the detection of Adrb3 mRNA transcript in rodent brain sub-regions and evaluated the effect of SR58611A on serotonergic and noradrenergic transmission in rats and mice in an attempt to elucidate the mechanism(s) underlying these properties. SR58611A (3 and 10 mg/kg, p.o.) increased the synthesis of 5-HT and tryptophan (Trp) levels in several rodent brain areas (cortex, hippocampus, hypothalamus, striatum). Moreover, SR58611A (10 mg/kg, p.o.) increased the release of 5-HT assessed by in vivo microdialysis in rat prefrontal cortex. Systemic (3 mg/kg, i.v.) or chronic administration of SR58611A (10 mg/kg, p.o.), in contrast to fluoxetine (15 mg/kg, p.o.), did not modify the activity of serotonergic neurons in the rat dorsal raphe nucleus. The increase in 5-HT synthesis induced by SR58611A was not observed in Adrb3s knockout mice, suggesting a selective involvement of Adrb3s in this effect. SR58611A (3 and 10 mg/kg, p.o.) did not modify norepinephrine synthesis and metabolism but increased its release in rat brain. Repeated administration of SR58611A (10 mg/kg, p.o.) did not modify basal norepinephrine release in rat prefrontal cortex whereas it prevented its tail-pinch stress-induced enhancement similarly to reboxetine (15 mg/kg, p.o.). Finally SR58611A increased the firing rate of noradrenergic neurons in the rat locus coeruleus following systemic (3 mg/kg, i.v.) or local (0.01 and 1 microM) but not chronic (10 mg/kg, p.o.) administration. These results suggest that the anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like activities of SR58611A involve an increase of brain serotonergic and noradrenergic neurotransmissions, triggered by activation of Adrb3s.

ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a general-purpose, heavy-ion detector at the CERN LHC which focuses on QCD, the strong-interaction sector of the Standard Model. It is designed to address the physics of strongly interacting matter and the quark-gluon plasma at extreme values of energy density and temperature in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Besides running with Pb ions, the physics programme includes collisions with lighter ions, lower energy running and dedicated proton-nucleus runs. ALICE will also take data with proton beams at the top LHC energy to collect reference data for the heavy-ion programme and to address several QCD topics for which ALICE is complementary to the other LHC detectors. The ALICE detector has been built by a collaboration including currently over 1000 physicists and engineers from 105 Institutes in 30 countries. Its overall dimensions are 16x16x26 m3with a total weight of approximately 10 000 t. The experiment consists of 18 different detector systems each with its own specific technology choice and design constraints, driven both by the physics requirements and the experimental conditions expected at LHC. The most stringent design constraint is to cope with the extreme particle multiplicity anticipated in central Pb-Pb collisions. The different subsystems were optimized to provide high-momentum resolution as well as excellent Particle Identification (PID) over a broad range in momentum, up to the highest multiplicities predicted for LHC. This will allow for comprehensive studies of hadrons, electrons, muons, and photons produced in the collision of heavy nuclei. Most detector systems are scheduled to be installed and ready for data taking by mid-2008 when the LHC is scheduled to start operation, with the exception of parts of the Photon Spectrometer (PHOS), Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) and Electro Magnetic Calorimeter (EMCal). These detectors will be completed for the high-luminosity ion run expected in 2010. Abstract: Exenatide is an incretin mimetic indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in combination with a sulfonylurea, a thiazolidinedione, metformin, or metformin plus a sulfonylurea or thiazolidinedione. Exenatide lowers postprandial blood glucose levels by stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion, inhibiting glucagon secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and increasing satiety. Therapy with exenatide often results in weight loss, which further assists in decreasing insulin resistance. This feature makes the drug an attractive therapeutic option for obese patients. We report the successful off-label use of exenatide in an obese, 40-year-old man with type 1 diabetes and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection who had gastrointestinal intolerance to pramlintide. The patient had experienced a dramatic weight gain secondary to his antiretroviral drugs. This weight gain led to insulin resistance and the development of type 2 diabetes; thus he had characteristics of both types 1 and 2 diabetes, or double diabetes. Before the start of exenatide therapy, he weighed 123 kg, had a body mass index of 42.3 kg/m(2), and had a suboptimal hemoglobin A(1c) value of 8.7%. After 11 months of therapy, the patient lost 24 kg (19.5% of his body weight) and achieved a hemoglobin A(1c) value of 7.3%. His basal insulin requirement was reduced by 25%, and his use of short-acting insulin before breakfast and before dinner was discontinued. In addition, the patient's quality of life substantially improved, as he was able to return to work and exercise after being nearly incapacitated by his weight. To our knowledge, this is the first published case report of the use of exenatide in a patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus or human immunodeficiency virus infection. Given this experience, exenatide may prove to be a useful alternative in selected patients with type 1 diabetes.

Abstract: In a newly developed dual-source computed tomography system (DSCT) the relation of heart rate and image quality and the possible advantages of the system's superior temporal resolution in the evaluation of left ventricular parameters as compared to results of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were assessed. Coronary CT angiography was performed using a DSCT (Somatom Defintion, Siemens Medical Solutions, Forchheim, Germany) in 21 patients (mean age 62+/-8; 15 male, 6 female). Image quality of the coronary arteries, the heart valves, and the left ventricular myocardium was assessed using a three-point grading scale. Ten of these patients also underwent cardiac MRI for the assessment of left ventricular function, using a SSFP (steady-state free precession) sequence. Left ventricular ejection fractions (LV-EF), the end-systolic volumes (ESV), and the end-diastolic volumes (EDV) were measured employing MRI and DSCT datasets. The image quality ratings for the coronary arteries at the optimal reconstruction interval were diagnostic even in patients with high heart rates (1.42+/-0.49). Analysis of global LV function using DSCT quantified from CTA datasets showed a good correlation with results of cardiac MRI [EF: r=0.75 (p=0.01); ESV: r=0.72 (p=0.19); EDV: r=0.71 (p=0.02)]. The dual-source CT system offers robust image quality of the coronary arteries, independent of the heart rate, and provides combined diagnostic imaging of coronary arteries, the heart valves, the myocardium, and the global left ventricular function.

Abstract: Purpose. The precision and accuracy of two blood glucose meters were evaluated using finger and forearm blood samples. Methods. Duplicate blood glucose measurements on the same forearm and finger as venipuncture were performed with the FreeStyle Flash and the One Touch Ultra. Accuracy was assessed by error-grid analysis and the number of values within 10% of the laboratory reference value. Precision was determined by calculating the absolute mean percent differences in glucose values between the first and second fingers and forearm test results. Forearm testing success was defined as an accurate glucose reading obtained with one lance. Results. A total of 100 patients completed the study; 93% had diabetes and 53% were female. Patients’ mean ± S.D. age was 63 ± 12 years, and glucose measurements ranged from 69 to 354 mg/dL. All finger-stick samples fell within error-grid zones A and B; 72% and 57% of FreeStyle Flash and One Touch Ultra values fell within 10% of the laboratory reference values, respectively ( p = 0.027). Forearm samples were successfully obtained in 99 and 74 patients using the FreeStyle Flash and One Touch Ultra ( p < 0.001), with 64 and 36 samples, respectively, falling within 10% of the laboratory reference values ( p = 0.035). There was no difference in meter precision. Conclusion. The FreeStyle Flash and the One Touch Ultra are precise glucose meters; however, the FreeStyle Flash was associated with greater accuracy. Success rates of forearm glucose sampling were significantly greater when the FreeStyle Flash meter was used.

Abstract: Small water droplets (20 micron in diameter) have been exposed to intense (∼ 1019 W/cm2) laser pulses in order to study ultrashort (∼ 35 fs) laser pulse driven ion acceleration. Ion emission spectra registered simultaneously in forward and backward direction in respect to the incident laser beam carry similar integral ion energy but show different ion cutoff energies. With simple model estimations on basis of the confined and spherical geometry of the droplet-target, we inferred acceleration field strengths of about (0.7–2) MV/μm. Up to 9% of the incident laser energy is converted to kinetic energy of ions, which have been accelerated to energies above 100 keV and up to 1.5 MeV. A laser pedestal at an intensity of about 10−7 of the peak intensity at 1–2 ns in front of the pulse peak still limits the achievable cutoff energies of emitted protons from the droplet. The observed increase of cutoff energies with an enhanced temporal contrast of the laser pulse is elucidated within a simple acceleration model.

Abstract: An efficient acceleration of energetic ions is observed when small heavy-water droplets of {approx}20 {mu}m diameter are exposed to ultrafast ({approx}40 fs) Ti:sapphire laser pulses of up to 10{sup 19} W/cm{sup 2} intensity. Quantitative measurements of deuteron and neutron spectra were done, allowing one to analyze the outward and inward directed deuteron acceleration from the droplet. Neutron spectroscopy based on the D(d,n) fusion reaction was accomplished in four different spatial directions. The energy shifts of those fusion neutrons produced inside the exploding droplet reflect a remaining deuteron acceleration inside the irradiated droplet along the axis of the incident laser beam. The overall neutron yield of the microdroplets is relatively small as a result of the dominant outward directed acceleration of the deuterons with 1200 neutrons/shot. Relying on the 'explosionlike' acceleration of such spherical droplet targets we have developed a spray target consisting of heavy-water microspheres with diameters of 150 nm. Both the high deuteron energies of up to 1 MeV resulting from the irradiation intensity of {approx}10{sup 19} W/cm{sup 2} as well as the collisions between the deuterons and the surrounding spray delivered about one order of magnitude more neutrons than the single-droplet system. Abstract: Deep dips in MeV ion spectra are obtained from water droplet targets irradiated by intense [$(0.5\char21{}1.2)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{19}\text{ }\mathrm{W}/{\mathrm{c}\mathrm{m}}^{2}$] and ultrashort (35 fs) laser pulses. The existence of these dips is ascribed to the generation of a multielectron-temperature plasma, which is confirmed by our experiments. An existing fluid model based on hot-electron components with significantly different temperatures is consistent with the behavior we observe in the ion spectra of the femtosecond laser-driven interaction. The model provides a good simulation of the observed spectral dips and allows us to establish important parameters such as hot- and cold-electron temperatures and the respective electron density ratios. The result may be of interest for spectral tailoring of proton spectra in future applications of laser-generated proton beams.

Abstract: The accuracy of two home blood glucose monitors using forearm blood samples was studied. Blood samples were obtained from adults by venipuncture and analyzed for glucose concentration. Within five minutes after venipuncture, peripheral blood glucose measurements were taken in duplicate with the FreeStyle and One Touch Ultra monitors by using the same forearm as used for venipuncture. Accuracy was assessed by comparing the results for each first peripheral stick obtained by each monitor with the laboratory reference value. Monitor precision was evaluated by evaluating the mean difference in glucose values between the first and second peripheral sticks. Blood samples were obtained from 250 subjects, 170 (68%) of whom had diabetes mellitus. A total of 98.8% and 98.4% of the blood glucose readings obtained with FreeStyle and One Touch Ultra, respectively, were clinically acceptable, and 65.2% and 59.2% of the measurements, respectively, were within 10% of the laboratory reference values. The average difference between the first and second glucose measurements was 9.7 mg/dL for FreeStyle and 5.2 mg/dL for One Touch Ultra. One peripheral stick was needed to obtain an adequate blood sample in 95.6% of subjects using FreeStyle, compared with 83.2% of subjects using One Touch Ultra. Forearm blood glucose measurements obtained with the FreeStyle and One Touch Ultra devices were similar to laboratory reference values obtained by venipuncture.

Abstract: Comparison of the imaging capabilities of storage phosphor (computed) radiography and flat plate radiography with conventional film-screen radiography to find new strategies for quality and dose management, i. e., optimizing imaging quality and dose depending on the imaging method and clinical situation.Images of a CDRAD-phantom, hand-phantom, abdomen-phantom and chest-phantom obtained with different exposure voltages (50 kV, 73 kV, 109 kV) and different speeds (200, 400, 800, 1600) were processed with various digital systems (flat plate detector: Digital Diagnost [Philips]; storage phosphors: ADC-70 [Agfa], ADC-Solo [Agfa], FCR XG 1 [Fuji]) and a conventional film-screen system (HT100G/ Ortho Regular [Agfa]).The evaluation of CDRAD images found the flat plate detector system to have the highest contrast detectability for all dose levels, followed by the FCR XG 1, ADC-Solo and ADC-70 systems. Comparison of the organ-phantom images found the flat plate detector system to be equal to film-screen radiography and especially to storage phosphor systems even for low exposure doses.Flat plate radiography systems demonstrate the highest potential for high image quality when reducing the exposure dose. Depending on the system generation, the storage phosphor systems also show an improved image quality, but the possibility of a dose reduction is limited in comparison with the flat plate detector system.

Abstract: This article discusses the reasons infertile couples continue to remain in infertility treatment. Through a qualitative research approach, using eight open-ended questions, the author interviewed a convenience sample of fourteen women in a large Midwestern academic health center reproductive endocrinology group practice, to identify reasons that influenced their decision to stay in treatment. The desire to have one's own children was the motivating force which helped sustain a sense of hope in these women fueled by the advanced technology advocated by their physicians. Support for these women were mostly from spouses and family members with friends with children not being very supportive. The lack of patient education was seen as a very negative influence by most of the participants.

Abstract: Study Objective. To determine the effect of Niaspan—a niacin preparation with both immediate- and extended-release characteristics—on lipid and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Design. Retrospective study. Setting. Private-practice endocrinology group. Patients. Thirty-two patients (mean age 60 yrs; 72% men) with type 2 diabetes identified by a computerized text search. Intervention. Patients received Niaspan 1000, 1500, or 2000 mg/day (median daily dosage 1000 mg). Measurements and Main Results. Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, hemoglobin A1c, and transaminase levels were compared for each patient before and 6 months after initiation of Niaspan. Niaspan therapy was associated with a significant 34% increase in HDL (p=0.033), a significant 36% reduction of triglycerides (p=0.049), and no significant change in LDL (p=0.236) or total cholesterol (p=0.122). Mean hemoglobin A1c levels significantly decreased from baseline by 0.5 ± 0.3% (p=0.032), even though dosages and treatment with antidiabetic agents remained constant. There were no significant changes in transaminase levels. Seven patients (21.9%) discontinued Niaspan; one of them experienced an increase in blood glucose while receiving the agent. Conclusion. For most patients with type 2 diabetes, Niaspan is a safe and effective therapy for dyslipidemia and does not exacerbate glycemic control.

Abstract: Recently developed verification tools based on local wavelet spectra can isolate errors in the spatial structure of quantitative precipitation forecasts, thereby answering the question of whether the predicted rainfall variability is distributed correctly across a range of spatial scales. This study applies the wavelet-based structure scores to real numerical weather predictions and radar-derived observations for the first time. After tackling important practical concerns such as uncertain boundary conditions and missing data, the behaviour of the scores under realistic conditions is tested in selected case studies and analysed systematically across a large data set. Among the two tested wavelet scores, the approach based on the so-called map of central scales emerges as a particularly convenient and useful tool: summarizing the local spectrum at each pixel by its centre of mass results in a compact and informative visualization of the entire wavelet analysis. The histogram of these scales leads to a structure score which is straightforward to interpret and insensitive to free parameters like wavelet choice and boundary conditions. Its judgement is largely the same as that of the alternative approach (based on the spatial mean wavelet spectrum) and broadly consistent with other, established structural scores.

Abstract: We present a systematic investigation of the thermodynamic and kinetic role of the intermolecular G292-C(75 )and G293-C(74 )Watson-Crick base-pairs in the reaction catalyzed by Escherichia coli RNase P RNA. Single turnover kinetics were analyzed for wild-type RNase P RNA and two variants with a single G to C exchange (C292 or C293), either acting on wild-type precursor tRNA (ptRNA) or derivatives carrying a complementary change at the tRNA 3'-end (G(74)CA or CG(75)A). Ground state binding of tRNA was studied using three different methods, including a novel fluorescence-based assay measuring equilibrium binding. We conclude that: (1) the role of the G293-C(74 )interaction is essentially confined to Watson-Crick base-pairing, with no indication for crucial tertiary contacts involving this base-pair; (2) the G293-C(74 )pair, although being as important for ptRNA ground state binding as G292-C(75), is much less crucial to catalytic performance than the G292-C(75) pair; (3) disruption of the G292-C(75 )base-pair results in preferential destabilization of enzyme transition-state complexes; and (4) the identity of the G292-C(75) pair, as part of the higher-order structural context consisting of coplanar G292-C(75)-A258 and G291-G259-A(76 )triples, contributes to high affinity binding of ptRNA and catalytic efficiency.

245. Changes in EEG power spectra during biofeedback of slow cortical potentials in epilepsy

Abstract: The goal of the study was to explore parallel changes in EEG spectral frequencies during biofeedback of slow cortical potentials (SCPs) in epilepsy patients. Thirty-four patients with intractable focal epilepsy participated in 35 sessions of SCP self-regulation training. The spectral analysis was carried out for the EEG recorded at the same electrode site (Cz) that was used for SCP feedback. The most prominent effect was the increase in the theta 2 power (6.0-7.9 Hz) and the relative power decrement in all other frequency bands (particularly delta 1, alpha 2 and beta 2) in transfer trials (i.e., where patients controlled their SCPs without continuous feedback) compared with feedback trials. In the second half of the training course (i.e., sessions 21-35) larger power values in the delta, theta, and alpha bands were found when patients were required to produce positive versus negative SCP shifts. Both across-subject and across-session (within-subject) correlations between spectral EEG parameters, on the one hand, and SCP data, on the other hand, were low and inconsistent, contrary to high and stable correlations between different spectral variables. This fact, as well as the lack of considerable task-dependent effects during the first part of training, indicates that learned SCP shifts did not directly lead to the specific dynamics of the EEG power spectra. Rather, these dynamics were related to nonspecific changes in patients' brain state.

247. PFP Emergency Lighting Study

Abstract: NFPA 101, section 5-9 mandates that, where required by building classification, all designated emergency egress routes be provided with adequate emergency lighting in the event of a normal lighting outage. Emergency lighting is to be arranged so that egress routes are illuminated to an average of 1.0 footcandle with a minimum at any point of 0.1 footcandle, as measured at floor level. These levels are permitted to drop to 60% of their original value over the required 90 minute emergency lighting duration after a power outage. The Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP) has two designations for battery powered egress lights ''Emergency Lights'' are those battery powered lights required by NFPA 101 to provide lighting along officially designated egress routes in those buildings meeting the correct occupancy requirements. Emergency Lights are maintained on a monthly basis by procedure ZSR-12N-001. ''Backup Lights'' are battery powered lights not required by NFPA, but installed in areas where additional light may be needed. The Backup Light locations were identified by PFP Safety and Engineering based on several factors. (1) General occupancy and type of work in the area. Areas occupied briefly during a shiftly surveillance do not require backup lighting while a room occupied fairly frequentlymore » or for significant lengths of time will need one or two Backup lights to provide general illumination of the egress points. (2) Complexity of the egress routes. Office spaces with a standard hallway/room configuration will not require Backup Lights while a large room with several subdivisions or irregularly placed rooms, doors, and equipment will require Backup Lights to make egress safer. (3) Reasonable balance between the safety benefits of additional lighting and the man-hours/exposure required for periodic light maintenance. In some plant areas such as building 236-Z, the additional maintenance time and risk of contamination do not warrant having Backup Lights installed in all rooms. Sufficient light for egress is provided by existing lights located in the hallways.« less
