The growth of science and technology is a recombinative process, wherein new discoveries and inventions are built from prior knowledge. Yet relatively little is known about the manner in which scientific and technological knowledge develop and coalesce into larger structures that enable or constrain future breakthroughs. Network science has recently emerged as a framework for measuring the structure and dynamics of knowledge. While helpful, existing approaches struggle to capture the global properties of the underlying networks, leading to conflicting observations about the nature of scientific and technological progress. We bridge this methodological gap using tools from algebraic topology to characterize the higher-order structure of knowledge networks in science and technology across scale. We observe rapid growth in the higher-order structure of knowledge in many scientific and technological fields. This growth is not observable using traditional network measures. We further demonstrate that the emergence of higher-order structure coincides with decline in lower-order structure, and has historically far outpaced the corresponding emergence of higher-order structure in scientific and technological collaboration networks. Up to a point, increases in higher-order structure are associated with better outcomes, as measured by the novelty and impact of papers and patents. However, the nature of science and technology produced under higher-order regimes also appears to be qualitatively different from that produced under lower-order ones, with the former exhibiting greater linguistic abstractness and greater tendencies for building upon prior streams of knowledge., Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The balloon-borne ANITA experiment is designed to detect ultra-high energy neutrinos via radio emissions produced by an in-ice shower. Although initially purposed for interactions within the Antarctic ice sheet, ANITA also demonstrated the ability to self-trigger on radio emissions from ultra-high energy charged cosmic rays interacting in the Earth's atmosphere. For showers produced above the Antarctic ice sheet, reflection of the down-coming radio signals at the Antarctic surface should result in a polarity inversion prior to subsequent observation at the $\sim$35-40 km altitude ANITA gondola. ANITA has published two anomalous instances of upcoming cosmic-rays with measured polarity opposite the remaining sample of $\sim$50 UHECR signals. The steep observed upwards incidence angles (25--30 degrees relative to the horizontal) require non-Standard Model physics if these events are due to in-ice neutrino interactions, as the Standard Model cross-section would otherwise prohibit neutrinos from penetrating the long required chord of Earth. Shoemaker et al. posit that glaciological effects may explain the steep observed anomalous events. We herein consider the scenarios offered by Shoemaker et al. and find them to be disfavored by extant ANITA and HiCal experimental data. We note that the recent report of four additional near-horizon anomalous ANITA-4 events, at $>3\sigma$ significance, are incompatible with their model, which requires significant signal transmission into the ice.

High Energy Physics - Experiment ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will be a powerful tool for a variety of physics topics. The high-intensity proton beams provide a large neutrino flux, sampled by a near detector system consisting of a combination of capable precision detectors, and by the massive far detector system located deep underground. This configuration sets up DUNE as a machine for discovery, as it enables opportunities not only to perform precision neutrino measurements that may uncover deviations from the present three-flavor mixing paradigm, but also to discover new particles and unveil new interactions and symmetries beyond those predicted in the Standard Model (SM). Of the many potential beyond the Standard Model (BSM) topics DUNE will probe, this paper presents a selection of studies quantifying DUNE's sensitivities to sterile neutrino mixing, heavy neutral leptons, non-standard interactions, CPT symmetry violation, Lorentz invariance violation, neutrino trident production, dark matter from both beam induced and cosmogenic sources, baryon number violation, and other new physics topics that complement those at high-energy colliders and significantly extend the present reach., Comment: 54 pages, 40 figures, paper based on the DUNE Technical Design Report (arXiv:2002.03005)

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), a 40-kton underground liquid argon time projection chamber experiment, will be sensitive to the electron-neutrino flavor component of the burst of neutrinos expected from the next Galactic core-collapse supernova. Such an observation will bring unique insight into the astrophysics of core collapse as well as into the properties of neutrinos. The general capabilities of DUNE for neutrino detection in the relevant few- to few-tens-of-MeV neutrino energy range will be described. As an example, DUNE's ability to constrain the $\nu_e$ spectral parameters of the neutrino burst will be considered., Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures; paper based on DUNE Technical Design Report. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2002.03005

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
ANITA's fourth long-duration balloon flight in late 2016 detected 29 cosmic-ray (CR)-like events on a background of $0.37^{+0.27}_{-0.17}$ anthropogenic events. CRs are mainly seen in reflection off the Antarctic ice sheets, creating a characteristic phase-inverted waveform polarity. However, four of the below-horizon CR-like events show anomalous non-inverted polarity, a $p = 5.3 \times 10^{-4}$ chance if due to background. All anomalous events are from locations near the horizon; ANITA-IV observed no steeply-upcoming anomalous events similar to the two such events seen in prior flights., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letters. Recently, superhydrides have been computationally identified and subsequently synthesized with a variety of metals at very high pressures. In this work, we evaluate the possibility of synthesizing superhydrides by uniquely combining electrochemistry and applied pressure. We perform computational searches for palladium superhydrides using density functional theory and particle swarm optimization calculations over a broad range of pressures and electrode potentials. We incorporate exchange-correlation functional uncertainty using the Bayesian error estimation formalism to quantify the uncertainty associated with the identified stable phases. Based on a thermodynamic analysis, we construct pressure-potential phase diagrams and provide an alternate synthesis concept, $\mathcal{P}^2$ (pressure-potential), to accessing novel phases having high hydrogen content. Palladium-hydrogen is a widely-studied material system with the highest hydride phase being Pd$_3$H$_4$. Most strikingly for this system, at potentials above hydrogen evolution and $\sim$300 MPa pressure, we find the possibility to make palladium superhydrides (e.g., PdH$_{10}$). We demonstrate the generalizability of this approach for La-H, Y-H and Mg-H with 10-100 fold reduction in required pressure for stabilizing phases. In addition, the $\mathcal{P}^2$ strategy allows stabilizing new phases that cannot be done purely by either pressure or potential and is a general approach that is likely to work for synthesizing other superhydrides at modest pressures., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, 13 pages of Supplementary Material

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber with an active volume of $7.2\times 6.0\times 6.9$ m$^3$. It is installed at the CERN Neutrino Platform in a specially-constructed beam that delivers charged pions, kaons, protons, muons and electrons with momenta in the range 0.3 GeV$/c$ to 7 GeV/$c$. Beam line instrumentation provides accurate momentum measurements and particle identification. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a prototype for the first far detector module of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, and it incorporates full-size components as designed for that module. This paper describes the beam line, the time projection chamber, the photon detectors, the cosmic-ray tagger, the signal processing and particle reconstruction. It presents the first results on ProtoDUNE-SP's performance, including noise and gain measurements, $dE/dx$ calibration for muons, protons, pions and electrons, drift electron lifetime measurements, and photon detector noise, signal sensitivity and time resolution measurements. The measured values meet or exceed the specifications for the DUNE far detector, in several cases by large margins. ProtoDUNE-SP's successful operation starting in 2018 and its production of large samples of high-quality data demonstrate the effectiveness of the single-phase far detector design., Comment: 93 pages, 70 figures

The sensitivity of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) to neutrino oscillation is determined, based on a full simulation, reconstruction, and event selection of the far detector and a full simulation and parameterized analysis of the near detector. Detailed uncertainties due to the flux prediction, neutrino interaction model, and detector effects are included. DUNE will resolve the neutrino mass ordering to a precision of 5$\sigma$, for all $\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}$ values, after 2 years of running with the nominal detector design and beam configuration. It has the potential to observe charge-parity violation in the neutrino sector to a precision of 3$\sigma$ (5$\sigma$) after an exposure of 5 (10) years, for 50\% of all $\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}$ values. It will also make precise measurements of other parameters governing long-baseline neutrino oscillation, and after an exposure of 15 years will achieve a similar sensitivity to $\sin^{2} 2\theta_{13}$ to current reactor experiments., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2002.03005; Updated after referee comments

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is a next-generation neutrino oscillation experiment that aims to measure $CP$-violation in the neutrino sector as part of a wider physics program. A deep learning approach based on a convolutional neural network has been developed to provide highly efficient and pure selections of electron neutrino and muon neutrino charged-current interactions. The electron neutrino (antineutrino) selection efficiency peaks at 90% (94%) and exceeds 85% (90%) for reconstructed neutrino energies between 2-5 GeV. The muon neutrino (antineutrino) event selection is found to have a maximum efficiency of 96% (97%) and exceeds 90% (95%) efficiency for reconstructed neutrino energies above 2 GeV. When considering all electron neutrino and antineutrino interactions as signal, a selection purity of 90% is achieved. These event selections are critical to maximize the sensitivity of the experiment to $CP$-violating effects., Comment: 39 pages, 11 figures

Training deep neural networks (DNNs) in large-cluster computing environments is increasingly necessary, as networks grow in size and complexity. Local memory and processing limitations require robust data and model parallelism for crossing compute node boundaries. We propose a linear-algebraic approach to model parallelism in deep learning, which allows parallel distribution of any tensor in the DNN. Rather than rely on automatic differentiation tools, which do not universally support distributed memory parallelism models, we show that parallel data movement operations, e.g., broadcast, sum-reduce, and halo exchange, are linear operators, and by defining the relevant spaces and inner products, we manually develop the adjoint, or backward, operators required for gradient-based training of DNNs. We build distributed DNN layers using these parallel primitives, composed with sequential layer implementations, and demonstrate their application by building and training a distributed DNN using DistDL, a PyTorch and MPI-based distributed deep learning toolkit.

UUsing a five-hour adaptive-optics-assisted observation with MUSE, we have identified a doubly-imaged Ly alpha source at redshift 5.975 behind the z=0.222 lens galaxy J0946+1006 ('the Jackpot'). The source separation implies an Einstein radius of ~2.5 arcsec. Combined with the two previously-known Einstein rings in this lens (radii 1.4 arcsec at z = 0.609 and 2.1 arcsec at z ~ 2.4), this system is now a unique galaxy-scale triple-source-plane lens. We show that existing lensing models for J0946+1006 successfully map the two new observed images to a common point on the z=5.975 source plane. The new source will provide further constraints on the mass distribution in the lens and in the two previously known sources. The third source also probes two new distance scaling factors which are sensitive to the cosmological parameters of the Universe. We show that detection of a new multiply imaged emission-line source is not unexpected in observations of this depth; similar data for other known lenses should reveal a larger sample of multiple-image-plane systems for cosmography and other applications., Comment: 7 pages. The SunPy Project developed a 13-question survey to understand the software and hardware usage of the solar physics community. 364 members of the solar physics community, across 35 countries, responded to our survey. We found that 99$\pm$0.5% of respondents use software in their research and 66% use the Python scientific software stack. Students are twice as likely as faculty, staff scientists, and researchers to use Python rather than Interactive Data Language (IDL). In this respect, the astrophysics and solar physics communities differ widely: 78% of solar physics faculty, staff scientists, and researchers in our sample uses IDL, compared with 44% of astrophysics faculty and scientists sampled by Momcheva and Tollerud (2015). 63$\pm$4% of respondents have not taken any computer-science courses at an undergraduate or graduate level. We also found that most respondents utilize consumer hardware to run software for solar-physics research. Although 82% of respondents work with data from space-based or ground-based missions, some of which (e.g. the Solar Dynamics Observatory and Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope) produce terabytes of data a day, 14% use a regional or national cluster, 5% use a commercial cloud provider, and 29% use exclusively a laptop or desktop. Finally, we found that 73$\pm$4% of respondents cite scientific software in their research, although only 42$\pm$3% do so routinely.

We report on spiking dynamics of frequency up-converted emission at 420 nm generated on the 6P3/2-5S1/2 transition in Rb vapour two-photon excited to the 5D5/2 level with laser light at 780 and 776 nm. The spike duration is less than the natural lifetime of any excited level involved in the interaction with both continuous and pulsed pump radiation. The spikes at 420 nm are attributed to temporal properties of the directional emission at 5.23 {\mu}m generated on the population inverted 5D5/2-6P3/2 transition. A link between the spiking regime and cooperative effects is discussed. We suggest that the observed stochastic behaviour is due to the quantum-mechanical nature of the cooperative effects rather than random fluctuation of the applied laser fields., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

215. Integrated organic inference (IOI): A reconciliation of statistical paradigms

Statistics - Methodology ,Statistics - Other Statistics - Abstract
It is recognised that the Bayesian approach to inference can not adequately cope with all the types of pre-data beliefs about population quantities of interest that are commonly held in practice. In particular, it generally encounters difficulty when there is a lack of such beliefs over some or all the parameters of a model, or within certain partitions of the parameter space concerned. To address this issue, a fairly comprehensive theory of inference is put forward called integrated organic inference that is based on a fusion of Fisherian and Bayesian reasoning. Depending on the pre-data knowledge that is held about any given model parameter, inferences are made about the parameter conditional on all other parameters using one of three methods of inference, namely organic fiducial inference, bispatial inference and Bayesian inference. The full conditional post-data densities that result from doing this are then combined using a framework that allows a joint post-data density for all the parameters to be sensibly formed without requiring these full conditional densities to be compatible. Various examples of the application of this theory are presented. Finally, the theory is defended against possible criticisms partially in terms of what was previously defined as generalised subjective probability., Comment: Final version with corrections. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1901.08589

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
Low-redshift strong-lensing galaxies can provide robust measurements of the stellar mass-to-light ratios in early-type galaxies (ETG), and hence constrain variations in the stellar initial mass function (IMF). At present, only a few such systems are known. Here, we report the first results from a blind search for gravitationally-lensed emission line sources behind 52 massive $z$ $<$ 0.07 ETGs with MUSE integral field spectroscopy. For 16 galaxies, new observations were acquired, whilst the other 36 were analysed from archival data. This project has previously yielded one confirmed galaxy-scale strong lens (J0403-0239) which we report in an earlier paper. J0403-0239 has since received follow-up observations, presented here, which indicate support for our earlier IMF results. Three cluster-scale, and hence dark-matter-dominated, lensing systems were also discovered (central galaxies of A4059, A2052 and AS555). For nine further galaxies, we detect a singly-imaged but closely-projected source within 6 arcsec (including one candidate with sources at three different redshifts); such cases can be exploited to derive upper limits on the IMF mass-excess factor, $\alpha$. Combining the new lens and new upper limits, with the previously-discovered systems, we infer an average $\langle \alpha \rangle$ = 1.06 $\pm$ 0.08 (marginalised over the intrinsic scatter), which is inconsistent with a Salpeter-like IMF ($\alpha$ = 1.55) at the 6$\sigma$ level. We test the detection threshold in these short-exposure MUSE observations with the injection and recovery of simulated sources, and predict that one in twenty-five observations is expected to yield a new strong-lens system. Our observational results are consistent with this expected yield., Comment: 23 pages, 16 Figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
The preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe, the dynamics of the supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and whether protons eventually decay -- these mysteries at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics are key to understanding the early evolution of our universe, its current state, and its eventual fate. DUNE is an international world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions as it searches for leptonic charge-parity symmetry violation, stands ready to capture supernova neutrino bursts, and seeks to observe nucleon decay as a signature of a grand unified theory underlying the standard model. The DUNE far detector technical design report (TDR) describes the DUNE physics program and the technical designs of the single- and dual-phase DUNE liquid argon TPC far detector modules. Volume II of this TDR, DUNE Physics, describes the array of identified scientific opportunities and key goals. Crucially, we also report our best current understanding of the capability of DUNE to realize these goals, along with the detailed arguments and investigations on which this understanding is based. This TDR volume documents the scientific basis underlying the conception and design of the LBNF/DUNE experimental configurations. As a result, the description of DUNE's experimental capabilities constitutes the bulk of the document. Key linkages between requirements for successful execution of the physics program and primary specifications of the experimental configurations are drawn and summarized. This document also serves a wider purpose as a statement on the scientific potential of DUNE as a central component within a global program of frontier theoretical and experimental particle physics research. Thus, the presentation also aims to serve as a resource for the particle physics community at large., Comment: 357 pages, 165 figures (updated typos in Table 6.1 and corrected errors in author list)

Central to achieving DUNE's physics program is a far detector that combines the many tens-of-kiloton fiducial mass necessary for rare event searches with sub-centimeter spatial resolution in its ability to image those events, allowing identification of the physics signatures among the numerous backgrounds. In the single-phase liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) technology, ionization charges drift horizontally in the liquid argon under the influence of an electric field towards a vertical anode, where they are read out with fine granularity. A photon detection system supplements the TPC, directly enhancing physics capabilities for all three DUNE physics drivers and opening up prospects for further physics explorations. The DUNE far detector technical design report (TDR) describes the DUNE physics program and the technical designs of the single- and dual-phase DUNE liquid argon TPC far detector modules. Volume IV presents an overview of the basic operating principles of a single-phase LArTPC, followed by a description of the DUNE implementation. Each of the subsystems is described in detail, connecting the high-level design requirements and decisions to the overriding physics goals of DUNE., Comment: Minor corrections made for JINST submission, 673 pages, 312 figures (corrected errors in author list)

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions as it searches for leptonic charge-parity symmetry violation, stands ready to capture supernova neutrino bursts, and seeks to observe nucleon decay as a signature of a grand unified theory underlying the standard model. The DUNE far detector technical design report (TDR) describes the DUNE physics program and the technical designs of the single- and dual-phase DUNE liquid argon TPC far detector modules. Volume III of this TDR describes how the activities required to design, construct, fabricate, install, and commission the DUNE far detector modules are organized and managed. This volume details the organizational structures that will carry out and/or oversee the planned far detector activities safely, successfully, on time, and on budget. It presents overviews of the facilities, supporting infrastructure, and detectors for context, and it outlines the project-related functions and methodologies used by the DUNE technical coordination organization, focusing on the areas of integration engineering, technical reviews, quality assurance and control, and safety oversight. Because of its more advanced stage of development, functional examples presented in this volume focus primarily on the single-phase (SP) detector module., Comment: Minor corrections made for JINST submission, 209 pages, 55 figures (updated typos in Table A.5; corrected errors in author list)

This TDR is intended to justify the technical choices for the far detector that flow down from the high-level physics goals through requirements at all levels of the Project. Volume I contains an executive summary that introduces the DUNE science program, the far detector and the strategy for its modular designs, and the organization and management of the Project. The remainder of Volume I provides more detail on the science program that drives the choice of detector technologies and on the technologies themselves. It also introduces the designs for the DUNE near detector and the DUNE computing model, for which DUNE is planning design reports. Volume II of this TDR describes DUNE's physics program in detail. Volume III describes the technical coordination required for the far detector design, construction, installation, and integration, and its organizational structure. Volume IV describes the single-phase far detector technology. A planned Volume V will describe the dual-phase technology., Comment: Minor corrections made for JINST submission; 244 pages, 114 figures

I report the discovery of a transient broad-H$\alpha$ point source in the outskirts of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1404, discovered in archival observations taken with the MUSE integral field spectrograph. The H$\alpha$ line width of 1950 km s$^{-1}$ FWHM, and luminosity of (4.1$\pm$0.1)$\times$10$^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$, are consistent with a nova outburst, and the source is not visible in MUSE data obtained nine months later. A transient soft X-ray source was detected at the same position (within $<$1 arcsec), 14 years before the H$\alpha$ transient. If the X-ray and H$\alpha$ emission are from the same object, the source may be a short-timescale recurrent nova with a massive white dwarf accretor, and hence a possible Type-Ia supernova progenitor. Selecting broad-H$\alpha$ point sources in MUSE archival observations for a set of nearby early-type galaxies, I discovered twelve more nova candidates with similar properties to the NGC 1404 source, including five in NGC 1380 and four in NGC 4365. Multi-epoch data are available for four of these twelve sources; all four are confirmed to be transient on $\sim$1 year timescales, supporting their identification as novae., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS letters (fits on five pages with correct fonts). Comments welcome

QD Chemistry - Abstract
Medium ring-containing scaffolds have been shown to display a broad range of biological activity and yet are under-represented within approved pharmaceuticals. Diversity-oriented synthesis (DOS) is a methodology by which multiple compounds can be efficiently synthesised in a diversity-driven approach. Combining both DOS and medium-ring methodology, a 10-membered ring containing an alkene, an amine and a ketone, was identified as a key intermediate for the synthesis of a library of scaffolds. The synthesis of the 10-membered ring in which the amine is protected as a tosylsulfonamide is described. The synthesis was accomplished in 34% overall yield over seven steps, utilising a key Cope-type rearrangement to enable synthesis of the ring. Conformational analysis and the crystal structure demonstrated that the ring sat preferentially in a chair-chair-chair conformation, although other conformations were accessible at room temperature. External nucleophilic addition into the ketone proved challenging, with only reduction successfully providing an alcohol product. A decalol scaffold was generated via an intramolecular Prins or ene type cyclisation. Epoxidation of the alkene, followed by treatment with a Lewis acid generated a diketone, which could be further transformed into a range of 5,7-fused rings, albeit with poor diastereoselectivity. Treatment of the epoxide with a Brønsted acid gave an enol ether embedded within a rare [5,3,1]-bicyclic framework, which could be reversibly transformed into the methyl acetal by further treatment with a Brønsted acid and methanol. Treatment of the methyl acetal with an acid and a nucleophile generated a variety of different bicyclic ether scaffolds. Deprotection of the tosylsulfonamide functionality was unsuccessful. Use of the alloc protecting group proved more successful and optimisation of the alloc removal step is described. All of the previous scaffolds were accessed using this alternative amine protecting group. Cheminformatic analysis guided the identification of three key scaffolds which were decorated in silico with a selection of 45 compounds identified for synthesis. A library of 15 decalol derivatives and eight bicyclic ether derivatives was synthesised. A Paternò-Büchi reaction on the free amine produced an oxetane scaffold albeit in low yield, which was successfully derivatised. Overall, 30 compounds representing 26 different Murcko scaffolds have been synthesised and submitted to an in-house compound library - future investigations of further scaffold development are discussed.

In this paper we examine how the use of robots in caring for elders can impact the meaningfulness of elders’ lives. We present a framework for understanding ‘meaningfulness in life’, and then apply that framework in discussing ways in which the use of robots to assist in activities of daily living can preserve, enhance or undermine the meaningfulness of elders’ lives. We conclude with a discussion of if and how having false beliefs about companion robots can affect meaningfulness in the life of the person having those false beliefs.

Abstract The proportion of hospital‐acquired medical device infections caused by pathogenic, multi‐drug resistant Candida species occurs in up to 10% of implantations. In this study, a unique antifungal micro‐pillared titanium surface pattern is developed, which demonstrates both fungicidal and fungistatic activity, persistently deterring biofilm formation by Candida albicans and multi‐drug resistant Candida auris fungi for up to 7 days. The Ti micropillars of 3.5 µm height are fabricated using maskless inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching. The micro‐textured surface consistently kills ≈50% of Candida spp. irreversibly attached cells and prevent the proliferation of the remaining cells by inducing programmed cell death. Proteomic analysis reveals that Candida cells undergo extensive metabolic stress, preventing the transformation from yeast to the filamentous/hyphal cell phenotype that is essential for establishing a typical in vitro biofilm. The mechanical stress imparted following interaction with the micropillars injures attaching cells and induces apoptosis whereby the Candida cells are unable to be revived in a non‐stress environment. These findings shed new insight toward the design of durable antifungal surfaces that prevent biofilm formation by pathogenic, multi‐drug resistant yeasts.

Background: Empirical use of antibiotics was reported throughout the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic; however, evidence of bacterial coinfection or secondary bacterial infection among COVID-19 patients was sparse. Antibiotic overprescription for COVID-19 patients without confirmed bacterial coinfection can increase antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The objective of this study is to assess the appropriateness of antibiotic use during COVID-19 by summarizing the frequency of antibiotic use among hospitalized COVID-19 and the frequency of antibiotic use in patients with COVID-19. Methods: A systematic search was conducted of the Embase, Medline, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases by generating search terms using the concepts of “COVID-19,” “Bacterial Coinfection,” “Secondary bacterial infection,” and “Antimicrobial resistance” to identify studies reporting antibiotic prescription for hospitalized COVID-19 patients with or without bacterial coinfection. We excluded studies on outpatients, studies informed infection due to mechanical ventilation, and randomized controlled trials. The pooled estimate of the percentage of the total and confirmed appropriate antibiotic prescriptions provided to hospitalized COVID-19 patients was generated using a random effect meta-analysis with inverse variance weighting. The study protocol registration DOI is osf.io/d3fpm. Results: Of 157,623 participants from 29 studies (11 countries, 45 % women) included in our review, antibiotics were prescribed to 67 % of participants (CI 64 %–71 %, P

IntroductionEuchelicerata is a diverse group encompassing Xiphosura, Chasmataspidida, Eurypterida, and Arachnida. Xiphosura represents an extant group with a rich fossil record dating back to the Ordovician period. Xiphosurans are often referred to as “living fossils” due to their seemingly unchanged morphology over millions of years. Numerous studies have contributed to the understanding of xiphosuran development, revealing changes in the timing and rate of their growth. These changes have been mainly associated with the freshwater invasion of early xiphosuran forms. However, limited research has been conducted to compare the developmental patterns of xiphosurans with other euchelicerates inhabiting aquatic environments.MethodsThis study compares the developmental patterns of xiphosurans with that of the fossil clades of eurypterids and chasmataspidids. By incorporating environmental and phylogenetic information within ancestral state reconstruction analyses, and then testing different evolutionary scenarios, the influence of the environment on the evolution of developmental patterns of euchelicerates is examined.ResultsThe results confirm that the developmental changes in Xiphosura throughout their evolutionary history are correlated with the exploitation of different environments. However, the inclusion of eurypterids and chasmataspidids indicates that the entirety of changes seen for Xiphosura represent only a small portion of the total variability recovered for euchelicerates.DiscussionOur results emphasize the importance of considering phylogenetic relationships and outgroup comparisons to understand the evolutionary dynamics of Xiphosura.

We outline the experimental concept and key scientific capabilities of AION (Atom Interferometer Observatory and Network), a proposed UK-based experimental programme using cold strontium atoms to search for ultra-light dark matter, to explore gravitational waves in the mid-frequency range between the peak sensitivities of the LISA and LIGO/Virgo/ KAGRA/INDIGO/Einstein Telescope/Cosmic Explorer experiments, and to probe other frontiers in fundamental physics. AION would complement other planned searches for dark matter, as well as probe mergers involving intermediate mass black holes and explore early universe cosmology. AION would share many technical features with the MAGIS experimental programme in the US, and synergies would flow from operating AION in a network with this experiment, as well as with other atom interferometer experiments such as MIGA, ZAIGA and ELGAR. Operating AION in a network with other gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO, Virgo and LISA would also offer many synergies., Comment: v3: Update to match published version in JCAP

A fundamental class of inferential problems are those characterised by there having been a substantial degree of pre-data (or prior) belief that the value of a model parameter was equal or lay close to a specified value, which may, for example, be the value that indicates the absence of an effect. Standard ways of tackling problems of this type, including the Bayesian method, are often highly inadequate in practice. To address this issue, an inferential framework called bispatial inference is put forward, which can be viewed as both a generalisation and radical reinterpretation of existing approaches to inference that are based on P values. It is shown that to obtain an appropriate post-data density function for a given parameter, it is often convenient to combine a special type of bispatial inference, which is constructed around one-sided P values, with a previously outlined form of fiducial inference. Finally, by using what are called post-data opinion curves, this bispatial-fiducial theory is naturally extended to deal with the general scenario in which any number of parameters may be unknown. The application of the theory is illustrated in various examples, which are especially relevant to the analysis of clinical trial data., Comment: Corrected, rewritten and extended. *Final version*

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
We present new observations of two z=0.12 strong-lensing elliptical galaxies, originally discovered from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, using the new FOCAS IFU spectrograph on the Subaru Telescope. For J1436+4943, our observations confirm the identification of this system as a multiple-image lens, in a cusp configuration, with Einstein radius $\theta_{Ein}$=2.0 arcsec. For J1701+3722, the improved data confirm earlier hints of a complex source plane, with different configurations evident in different emission lines. The new observations reveal a previously unseen inner counter-image to the [OIII] arc found from MaNGA, leading to a smaller revised Einstein radius of $\theta_{Ein}$=1.6 arcsec. The inferred projected masses within the Einstein apertures (3.7-4.7kpc) are consistent with being dominated by stars with an initial mass function (IMF) similar to that of the Milky Way, and a dark matter contribution of ~35 per cent as supported from cosmological simulations. These results are consistent with `pure lensing' analyses of lower-redshift lenses, but contrast with claims for heavier IMFs from combined lensing-and-dynamical studies of more distant early-type galaxies., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS Letters 30th October 2019; no referee engaged after two weeks

The results of an investigation into whether or not eclipse shadow bands have an atmospheric origin are presented. Using high altitude balloon and ground-based photodiode arrays during the 21 August 2017 total solar eclipse, data revealing the light patterns before and after totality were collected. These data were then analyzed using spectrograms. Both at the altitude of the balloon and on the ground, a sustained ~ 4.5 Hz signal was detected a few minutes before and after totality. This signal was coherent over a scale greater than 10 cm and detected in four separate balloon photodiodes and 16 ground photodiodes. At higher frequencies, up to at least 30 Hz, brief chaotic signals that were disorganized as a function of time were detected on the ground, but not at the altitude of the balloon and appeared mostly uncorrelated over a length scale of 10 cm. Some of our ground arrays utilized red and blue filters, but neither the sustained 4.5 Hz signal nor the higher frequency signals showed a strong dependence on filter color. On the ground we made a video of the shadow bands on a scaled white screen. We judged that the bands were roughly parallel to the orientation of the bright thin crescent Sun before and after totality and inferred that their propagation velocity was about v ~ 59 cm /s. Shadow band signals other than the sustained signal at ~ 4.5 Hz are consistent with atmospheric scintillation theory. These results are surprising. Based on accounts in the literature we expected to confirm the atmospheric scintillation theory of eclipse shadow bands, but instead we detected a sustained ~ 4.5 Hz signal at both high altitude and on the ground. This signal cannot be due to atmospheric scintillation and we ran a check to make sure this signal is not an artifact of our electronics. We recommend that additional searches for eclipse shadow bands be made at high altitude in the future., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication, JASTP

- Abstract
Objective: Evidence suggests the increased prevalence of diabetes among South Asian (SA) adolescents is due to their genetic risk profile. The South Asian Adolescent Diabetes Awareness Program (SAADAP) is a pilot intervention for SA youth in Canada with a family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We sought to investigate changes in (1) diabetes knowledge and associated risk factors, (2) risk perception and (3) health behaviours among adolescents participating in SAADAP. Design: One-group pre-test, post-test design informed by a commitment to community-based participatory research (CBPR). Setting: Sixty-eight adolescents aged 13-17 years with a family history of T2DM participated in SAADAP in a clinical-community setting in Canada. Method: Pre-post questionnaires were administered to evaluate diabetes knowledge and associated risk factors, risk perceptions and health behaviours. Analyses were restricted to 49 participants who attended at least four diabetes education sessions. Results: The mean age of adolescents was 14.5 years, and 57.1% self-identified as girls. The difference in knowledge about the definition, symptoms and complications of T2DM from baseline to post-intervention was 3.32 out of 21 (p < 0.001) among SA youth. There was significant increase in learning about diabetes risk factors (p < 0.001) from baseline to post-intervention. Almost 60% of participants exhibited no change in their risk perception after intervention. Approximately two-thirds of the participants self-reported positive changes in health behaviours after completing the programme. Conclusion: SAADAP showed promising outcomes in raising knowledge and improving health behaviours in SA adolescents with a family history of diabetes. Larger controlled trials with longer follow-up are recommended to support and expand on the current findings.

Using a novel trait-based measure, we examined genetic variants associated with obsessive-compulsive (OC) traits and tested whether OC traits and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) shared genetic risk. We conducted a genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) of OC traits using the Toronto Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (TOCS) in 5018 unrelated Caucasian children and adolescents from the community (Spit for Science sample). We tested the hypothesis that genetic variants associated with OC traits from the community would be associated with clinical OCD using a meta-analysis of all currently available OCD cases. Shared genetic risk was examined between OC traits and OCD in the respective samples using polygenic risk score and genetic correlation analyses. A locus tagged by rs7856850 in an intron of PTPRD (protein tyrosine phosphatase δ) was significantly associated with OC traits at the genome-wide significance level (p = 2.48 × 10-8). rs7856850 was also associated with OCD in a meta-analysis of OCD case/control genome-wide datasets (p = 0.0069). The direction of effect was the same as in the community sample. Polygenic risk scores from OC traits were significantly associated with OCD in case/control datasets and vice versa (p's

Abstract Background Generating the most contiguous, accurate genome assemblies given available sequencing technologies is a long-standing challenge in genome science. With the rise of long-read sequencing, assembly challenges have shifted from merely increasing contiguity to correctly assembling complex, repetitive regions of interest, ideally in a phased manner. At present, researchers largely choose between two types of long read data: longer, but less accurate sequences, or highly accurate, but shorter reads (i.e., >Q20 or 99% accurate). To better understand how these types of long-read data as well as scale of data (i.e., mean length and sequencing depth) influence genome assembly outcomes, we compared genome assemblies for a caddisfly, Hesperophylax magnus, generated with longer, but less accurate, Oxford Nanopore (ONT) R9.4.1 and highly accurate PacBio HiFi (HiFi) data. Next, we expanded this comparison to consider the influence of highly accurate long-read sequence data on genome assemblies across 6750 plant and animal genomes. For this broader comparison, we used HiFi data as a surrogate for highly accurate long-reads broadly as we could identify when they were used from GenBank metadata. Results HiFi reads outperformed ONT reads in all assembly metrics tested for the caddisfly data set and allowed for accurate assembly of the repetitive ~ 20 Kb H-fibroin gene. Across plants and animals, genome assemblies that incorporated HiFi reads were also more contiguous. For plants, the average HiFi assembly was 501% more contiguous (mean contig N50 = 20.5 Mb) than those generated with any other long-read data (mean contig N50 = 4.1 Mb). For animals, HiFi assemblies were 226% more contiguous (mean contig N50 = 20.9 Mb) versus other long-read assemblies (mean contig N50 = 9.3 Mb). In plants, we also found limited evidence that HiFi may offer a unique solution for overcoming genomic complexity that scales with assembly size. Conclusions Highly accurate long-reads generated with HiFi or analogous technologies represent a key tool for maximizing genome assembly quality for a wide swath of plants and animals. This finding is particularly important when resources only allow for one type of sequencing data to be generated. Ultimately, to realize the promise of biodiversity genomics, we call for greater uptake of highly accurate long-reads in future studies.
