Suggestive evidence has accumulated that intermediate mass black holes (IMBH) exist in some globular clusters. As stars diffuse in the cluster, some will inevitable wander sufficiently close to the hole that they suffer tidal disruption. An attractive feature of the IMBH hypothesis is its potential to disrupt not only solar-type stars but also compact white dwarf stars. Attention is given to the fate of white dwarfs that approach the hole close enough to be disrupted and compressed to such extent that explosive nuclear burning may be triggered. Precise modeling of the dynamics of the encounter coupled with a nuclear network allow for a realistic determination of the explosive energy release, and it is argued that ignition is a natural outcome for white dwarfs of all varieties passing well within the tidal radius. Although event rates are estimated to be significantly less than the rate of normal Type Ia supernovae, such encounters may be frequent enough in globular clusters harboring an IMBH to warrant a search for this new class of supernova., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, ApJ, accepted

We use a recent result by Cabezas et al. to build up an approximate solution to the gravitational field created by a rigidly rotating polytrope. We solve the linearized Einstein equations inside and outside the surface of zero pressure including second-order corrections due to rotational motion to get an asymptotically flat metric in a global harmonic coordinate system. We prove that if the metric and their first derivatives are continuous on the matching surface up to this order of approximation, the multipole moments of this metric cannot be fitted to those of the Kerr metric., Comment: LaTeX, 17 pages, submitted to CQG

The structure of the automorphism group of a simple TAI algebra is studied. In particular, we show that $\frac{\bar{\mrm{Inn}} (A)}{\bar{\mrm{Inn}}_{0} (A)}$ is isomorphic (as a topological group) to an inverse limit of discrete abelian groups for a unital, simple, AH algebra with bounded dimension growth. Consequently, $\frac{\bar{\mrm{Inn}} (A)}{\bar{\mrm{Inn}}_{0} (A)}$ is totally disconnected. Another consequence of our results is the following: Suppose $A$ is the transformation group \cstar-algebra of a minimal Furstenberg transformation $(\mbb{T}^{n}, h_{n})$ with a unique $h_{n}$-invariant probability measure on $\mbb{T}^{n}$. Then the automorphism group of $A$ is an extension of a simple topological group by the discrete group $\mrm{Aut} (\totalk(A))_{+,1}$., Comment: 35 pages

Relativistic black-hole jet sources are leading candidates for high energy (>> TeV) neutrino production. The relations defining (a) efficient photopion losses of cosmic-ray protons on target photons and (b) gamma-gamma opacity of gamma rays through that same target photon field imply clear multiwavelength predictions for when and at what energies blazars and GRBs should be most neutrino bright and gamma-ray dim. We obtain an approximate global stationary and axisymmetric solution of Einstein's equations which can be considered as a simple star model: a self-gravitating perfect fluid ball with constant mass density rotating in rigid motion. Using the post-Minkowskian formalism (weak-field approximation) and considering rotation as a perturbation (slow-rotation approximation), we find approximate interior and exterior (asymptotically flat) solutions to this problem in harmonic and quo-harmonic coordinates. In both cases, interior and exterior solutions are matched, in the sense of Lichnerowicz, on the surface of zero pressure to obtain a global solution. The resulting metric depends on three arbitrary constants: mass density, rotational velocity and the star radius at the non-rotation limit. The mass, angular momentum, quadrupole moment and other constants of the exterior metric are determined by these three parameters. The Health-e-Child project aims to develop an integrated healthcare platform for European paediatrics. In order to achieve a comprehensive view of childrens health, a complex integration of biomedical data, information, and knowledge is necessary. Ontologies will be used to formally define this domain knowledge and will form the basis for the medical knowledge management system. This paper introduces an innovative methodology for the vertical integration of biomedical knowledge. This approach will be largely clinician-centered and will enable the definition of ontology fragments, connections between them (semantic bridges) and enriched ontology fragments (views). We present a detailed spectral analysis of the prompt and afterglow emission of four nearby long-soft gamma-ray bursts (GRBs 980425, 030329, 031203, and 060218) that were spectroscopically found to be associated with type Ic supernovae, and compare them to the general GRB population. For each event, we investigate the spectral and luminosity evolution, and estimate the total energy budget based upon broadband observations. The observational inventory for these events has become rich enough to allow estimates of their energy content in relativistic and sub-relativistic form. The result is a global portrait of the effects of the physical processes responsible for producing long-soft GRBs. In particular, we find that the values of the energy released in mildly relativistic outflows appears to have a significantly smaller scatter than those found in highly relativistic ejecta. This is consistent with a picture in which the energy released inside the progenitor star is roughly standard, while the fraction of that energy that ends up in highly relativistic ejecta outside the star can vary dramatically between different events., Comment: 55 pages including 23 figures and 8 tables. Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are associated with type Ic supernovae that are more luminous than average and that eject material at very high velocities. Less-luminous supernovae were not hitherto known to be associated with GRBs, and therefore GRB-supernovae were thought to be rare events. Whether X-ray flashes - analogues of GRBs, but with lower luminosities and fewer gamma-rays - can also be associated with supernovae, and whether they are intrinsically 'weak' events or typical GRBs viewed off the axis of the burst, is unclear. Here we report the optical discovery and follow-up observations of the type Ic supernova SN 2006aj associated with X-ray flash XRF 060218. Supernova 2006aj is intrinsically less luminous than the GRB-supernovae, but more luminous than many supernovae not accompanied by a GRB. The ejecta velocities derived from our spectra are intermediate between these two groups, which is consistent with the weakness of both the GRB output and the supernova radio flux. Our data, combined with radio and X-ray observations, suggest that XRF 060218 is an intrinsically weak and soft event, rather than a classical GRB observed off-axis. This extends the GRB-supernova connection to X-ray flashes and fainter supernovae, implying a common origin. We present multicolor optical observations of the nearby (z=0.1685) GRB 030329 obtained with the same instrumentation over a time period of 6 hours for a total of an unprecedented 475 quasi-simultaneous BVR observations. The achromatic steepening in the optical, which occurs at t~0.7 days, provides evidence for a dynamic transition of the source, and can be most readily explained by models in which the GRB ejecta are collimated into a jet. Since the current state-of-the-art modeling of GRB jets is still flawed with uncertainties, we use these data to critically assess some classes of models that have been proposed in the literature. The data, especially the smooth decline rate seen in the optical afterglow, are consistent with a model in which GRB 030329 was a homogeneous, sharp-edged jet, viewed near its edge interacting with a uniform external medium, or viewed near its symmetry axis with a stratified wind-like external environment. The lack of short timescale fluctuations in the optical afterglow flux down to the 0.5 per cent level puts stringent constraints on possible small scale angular inhomogeneities within the jet or fluctuations in the external density.

The analysis of singular regions in the NUT solutions carried out in the recent paper (Manko and Ruiz, 2005 Class. Quantum Grav. 22, p.3555) is now extended to the Demianski-Newman vacuum and electrovacuum spacetimes. We show that the effect which produces the NUT parameter in a more general situation remains essentially the same as in the purely NUT solutions: it introduces the semi-infinite singularities of infinite angular momenta and positive or negative masses depending on the interrelations between the parameters; the presence of the electromagnetic field additionally endows the singularities with electric and magnetic charges. The exact formulae describing the mass, charges and angular momentum distributions in the Demianski-Newman solutions are obtained and concise general expressions P_n=(m+i\nu)(ia)^n, Q_n=(q+ib)(ia)^n for the entire set of the respective Beig-Simon multipole moments are derived. The rapid succession of discovery of short--duration hard--spectrum GRBs has led to unprecedented insights into the energetics of the explosion and nature of the progenitors. Yet short of the detection of a smoking gun, like a burst of coincident gravitational radiation or a Li-Paczynski mini-supernova, it is unlikely that a definitive claim can be made for the progenitors. As was the case with long--duration soft--spectrum GRBs, however, the expectation is that a systematic study of the hosts and the locations of short GRBs could begin to yield fundamental clues about their nature. We present the first aggregate study of the host galaxies of short--duration hard--spectrum GRBs. In particular, we present the Gemini--North and Keck discovery spectra of the galaxies that hosted three short GRBs and a moderate--resolution (R~6000) spectrum of a fourth host. We find that these short--hard GRBs originate in a variety of low-redshift (z<1) environments that differ substantially from those of long--soft GRBs, both on individual galaxy scales and on galaxy--cluster scales. Specifically, three of the bursts are found to be associated with old and massive galaxies with no current (< 0.1 Msol/hr) or recent star formation. Two of these galaxies are located within a cluster environment. These observations support an origin from the merger of compact stellar remnants, such as double neutron stars of a neutron star--black hole binary. The fourth event, in contrast, occurred within a dwarf galaxy with a star formation rate exceeding 0.5 Msol/yr. Therefore, it appears that like supernovae of Type Ia, the progenitors of short--hard bursts are created in all galaxy types, suggesting a corresponding class with a wide distribution of delay times between formation and explosion., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. We demonstrate the existence of equilibrium states in the limiting cases of the double-Kerr solution when one of the constituents is an extreme object. In the `extreme-subextreme' case the negative mass of one of the constituents is required for the balance, whereas in the `extreme-superextreme' equilibrium configurations both Kerr particles may have positive masses. We also show that the well-known relation |J|=M^2 between the mass and angular momentum in the extreme single Kerr solution ceases to be a characteristic property of the extreme Kerr particle in a binary system., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Class. We present new observations of the early X-ray afterglows of the first 27 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected with the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT). The early X-ray afterglows show a canonical behavior, where the light curve broadly consists of three distinct power law segments: (i) an initial very steep decay (t^{-alpha} with 34, and augments the already severe requirements for the efficiency of the prompt gamma-ray emission., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have obtained deep optical images with the Very Large Telescope at ESO of the first well-localized short-duration gamma-ray burst, GRB 050509B. From V and R imaging, initiated ~2 days after the GRB trigger and lasting up to three weeks, we detect no variable object inside the small Swift/XRT X-ray error circle down to 2sigma limits of V = 26.5 and R = 25.1. The X-ray error circle includes a giant elliptical galaxy at z = 0.225, which has been proposed as the likely host of this GRB. Our limits indicate that if the GRB originated at z = 0.225, any supernova-like event accompanying the GRB would have to be over 100 times fainter than normal Type Ia SNe or Type Ic hypernovae, 5 times fainter than the faintest known Ia or Ic SNe, and fainter than the faintest known Type II SNe. Moreover, we use the optical limits to constrain the energetics of the GRB outflow. Simple models indicate that, unless the intrinsic energy in the outflow from GRB 050509B was << 10^51 erg, there was very little radioactive material with efficient decay timescales for generating a large luminosity. The localization of the short-duration, hard-spectrum GRB 050509b was a watershed event. Thanks to the nearly immediate relay of the GRB position by Swift, we began imaging the GRB field 8 minutes after the burst and continued for the following 8 days. No convincing optical/infrared candidate afterglow or supernova was found for the object. We present a re-analysis of the XRT afterglow and find an absolute position that is ~4" to the west of the XRT position reported previously. Close to this position is a bright elliptical galaxy with redshift z=0.2248, about 1' from the center of a rich cluster of galaxies. Based on positional coincidences, the GRB and the bright elliptical are likely to be physically related. We thus have discovered evidence that at least some short-duration, hard-spectra GRBs arise at cosmological distances. However, while GRB 050509b was underluminous compared to long-duration GRBs, we demonstrate that the ratio of the blast-wave energy to the gamma-ray energy is consistent with that of long-duration GRBs. Based on this analysis, on the location of the GRB (40 +- 13 kpc from a bright galaxy), on the galaxy type (elliptical), and the lack of a coincident supernova, we suggest that there is now observational consistency with the hypothesis that short-hard bursts arise during the merger of a compact binary. Type Ic supernovae, the explosions following the core collapse of massive stars that have previously lost their hydrogen and helium envelopes, are particularly interesting because of the link with long-duration gamma-ray bursts. Although indications exist that these explosions are aspherical, direct evidence has still been missing. Late-time observations of SN 2003jd, a luminous Type Ic supernova, provide such evidence. Recent Subaru and Keck spectra reveal double-peaked profiles in the nebular lines of neutral oxygen and magnesium. These profiles are different from those of known Type Ic supernovae, with or without a gamma-ray burst, and they can be understood if SN 2003jd was an aspherical, axisymmetric explosion viewed from near the equatorial plane. The extraordinary giant flare (GF) of 2004 December 27 from the soft gamma repeater (SGR) 1806-20 was followed by a bright radio afterglow. We present an analysis of VLA observations of this radio afterglow from SGR 1806-20, consisting of previously reported 8.5 GHz data covering days 7 to 20 after the GF, plus new observations at 8.5 and 22 GHz from day 24 to 81. We detect motion in the flux centroid of the afterglow, at an average velocity of 0.26 +/- 0.03 c (assuming a distance of 15 kpc) at a position angle of -45 degrees. This motion, in combination with the growth and polarization measurements, suggests an asymmetric outflow, mainly from one side of the magnetar. We find a deceleration in the expansion, from ~9 mas/day to <5 mas/day. The time of deceleration is roughly coincident with the rebrightening in the radio light curve, as expected to result when the ejecta from the GF sweeps up enough of the external medium, and transitions from a coasting phase to the Sedov-Taylor regime. The radio afterglow is elongated and maintains a 2:1 axis ratio with an average position angle of -40 degrees (north through east), oriented perpendicular to the average intrinsic linear polarization angle., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, as accepted to ApJ Letters

On 2004 Dec. 27, the soft gamma repeater (SGR) 1806-20 emitted the brightest giant flare (GF) ever detected from an SGR, with an (isotropic) energy release $\sim 100$ times greater than the only two other known SGR GFs. It was followed by a very bright, fading radio afterglow. Extensive follow-up radio observations provided a wealth of information with unprecedented astrometric precision, revealing the temporal evolution of the source size, along with densely sampled light curves and spectra. Here we expand on our previous work on this source, by explaining these observations within one self-consistent dynamical model. In this scenario, the early radio emission is due to the outflow ejected during the GF energizing a thin shell surrounding a pre-existing cavity, where the observed steep temporal decay of the radio emission seen beginning on day 9 is attributed to the adiabatic cooling of the shocked shell. The shocked ejecta and external shell move outward together, driving a forward shock into the ambient medium, and are eventually decelerated by a reverse shock. As we show in Gelfand et al. (2005), the radio emission from the shocked external medium naturally peaks when significant deceleration occurs, and then decays relatively slowly. The dynamical modeling of the collision between the ejecta and the external shell together with the observed evolution of the source size (which is nicely reproduced in our model) suggest that most of the energy in the outflow was in mildly relativistic material, with an initial expansion velocity $v/c \lesssim 0.7d_{15}$, for a distance of $15d_{15}$ kpc to SGR 1806-20. The 2004 Dec. 27 giant Gamma-ray flare detected from the magnetar SGR 1806-20 created an expanding radio nebula which we have monitored with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Very Large Array. These data indicate that there was an increase in the observed flux ~25 days after the initial flare that lasted for ~8 days, which we believe is the result of ambient material swept-up and shocked by this radio nebula. For a distance to SGR 1806-20 of 15 kpc, using the properties of this rebrightening we infer that the initial blast wave was dominated by baryonic material of mass M>10^{24.5} g. For an initial expansion velocity v~0.7c (as derived in an accompanying paper), we infer this material had an initial kinetic energy E>10^{44.5} ergs. If this material originated from the magnetar itself, it may have emitted a burst of ultra-high energy (E > 1 TeV) neutrinos far brighter than that expected from other astrophysical sources., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Magnetars comprise two classes of rotating neutron stars (Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars), whose X-ray emission is powered by an ultrastrong magnetic field, B ~ 10^15 G. Occasionally SGRs enter into active episodes producing many short X-ray bursts; extremely rarely (about once per 50 years per source), SGRs emit a giant flare, an event with total energy at least 1000 times higher than their typical bursts. Here we report that, on 2004 December 27, SGR 1806-20 emitted the brightest extra-solar transient event ever recorded, even surpassing the full moon brightness for 0.2 seconds. The total (isotropic) flare energy is 2x10^46 erg, 100 times higher than the only two previous events, making this flare a once in a century event. This colossal energy release likely occurred during a catastrophic reconfiguration of the magnetar's magnetic field. Soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) are "magnetars", a small class of slowly spinning neutron stars with extreme surface magnetic fields, ~10^15 gauss. On 2004 December 27, a giant flare was detected from the magnetar SGR 1806-20, the third such event ever recorded. This burst of energy was detected by a variety of instruments and even caused an ionospheric disturbance in the Earth's upper atmosphere recorded around the globe. Here we report the detection of a fading radio afterglow produced by this outburst, with a luminosity 500 times larger than the only other detection of a similar source. From day 6 to day 19 after the flare from SGR 1806-20, a resolved, linearly polarized, radio nebula was seen, expanding at approximately a quarter the speed of light. To create this nebula, at least 4x10^43 ergs of energy must have been emitted by the giant flare in the form of magnetic fields and relativistic particles. The problem of comparison of the stationary axisymmetric vacuum solutions obtained within the framework of exact and approximate approaches for the description of the same general relativistic systems is considered. We suggest two ways of carrying out such comparison: (i) through the calculation of the Ernst complex potential associated with the approximate solution whose form on the symmetry axis is subsequently used for the identification of the exact solution possessing the same multipole structure, and (ii) the generation of approximate solutions from exact ones by expanding the latter in series of powers of a small parameter. The central result of our paper is the derivation of the correct approximate analogues of the double-Kerr solution possessing the physically meaningful equilibrium configurations. Long duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) accompany the deaths of some massive stars and hence, since massive stars are short lived, are a tracer of star formation activity. Given that GRBs are bright enough to be seen to very high redshifts, and detected even in dusty environments, they should therefore provide a powerful probe of the global star formation history of the universe. The potential of this approach can be investigated via submm photometry of GRB host galaxies. Submm luminosity also correlates with star formation rate, so the distribution of host galaxy submm fluxes should allow us to test the two methods for consistency. Here, we report new JCMT/SCUBA 850 micron measurements for 15 GRB hosts. Combining these data with results from previous studies we construct a sample of 21 hosts with <1.4 mJy errors. We show that the distribution of apparent 850 micron flux densities of this sample is reasonably consistent with model predictions, but there is tentative evidence of a dearth of submm bright (>4 mJy) galaxies. Furthermore, the optical/infrared properties of the submm brightest GRB hosts are not typical of the galaxy population selected in submm surveys, although the sample size is still small. We present optical and near-infrared follow-up observations of the X-Ray Flash (XRF) of July 23 2003. Our observations in the R-band cover the temporal range from 4.2 h to 64 days after the high energy event. We also present the results of multicolor imaging extending to the K-band on three epochs. The lightcurve of the R-band afterglow the first week after the burst is similar to the lightcurve for long duration Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), i.e., a broken power-law with a late time slope of alpha=-2.0 (F_nu propto t^alpha). Furthermore, the spectral energy distribution (SED) has a power-law (F_nu propto nu^beta) shape with slope beta=-1.0. However, the decay slope at t<1 day is shallow, consistent with zero. This is in qualitative agreement with the prediction that XRFs are off-axis classical GRBs. After the first week there is a strong bump in the lightcurve, which peaks at around 16 days. The SED after the peak becomes significantly redder. We discuss the possible interpretations of this bump, and conclude that an underlying supernova is the most likely explanation since no other model appears consistent with the evolution of the SED. Finally, we present deep spectroscopy of the burst both in the afterglow and in the bump phase. A firm upper limit of z=2.3 is placed on the redshift of XRF030723 from the lack of Ly-alpha forest lines in the spectrum of the afterglow. We report the discovery of the afterglow of the X-ray rich, long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 011211 and present evidence for oscillatory behaviour in its early optical light curve. The time-scale of the fluctuations, ~1 hour, is much smaller than the time of the observations, ~12 hours from the onset of the gamma-ray burst. The character and strength of the fluctuations are unprecedented and are inconsistent with causally connected variations in the emission of a symmetric, relativistic blast wave, i.e. flux variations which are produced uniformly throughout the shell surface are ruled out. Therefore, the wiggles are the result of spherically asymmetric density or energy variations. Additionally, there is evidence for fluctuations in the X-ray afterglow light curve. If real, the resulting difference in the observed time of the peaks of the short-term variations at X-ray and optical frequencies, would demonstrate that the energy content across the jet-emitting surface is not uniform., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. (Abrigded) We report X-ray studies of the environs of SN 1998bw and GRB 980425 using the Chandra X-Ray Observatory 1281 days after the GRB. Combining our observation of the supernova with others of the GRB afterglow, a smooth X-ray light curve, spanning ~1300 days, is obtained by assuming the burst and supernova were coincident at 35.6 Mpc. When this X-ray light curve is compared with those of the X-ray ``afterglows'' of ordinary GRBs, X-ray Flashes, and ordinary supernovae, evidence emerges for at least two classes of lightcurves, perhaps bounding a continuum. By three to ten years, all these phenomena seem to converge on a common X-ray luminosity, possibly indicative of the supernova underlying them all. This convergence strengthens the conclusion that SN 1998bw and GRB 980425 took place in the same object. One possible explanation for the two classes is a (nearly) standard GRB observed at different angles, in which case X-ray afterglows with intermediate luminosities should eventually be discovered. We show that the absence of equilibrium states of two uncharged spinning particles located on the symmetry axis, revealed in an approximate approach recently employed by Bonnor, can be explained by a non-general character of his approximation scheme which lacks an important arbitrary parameter representing a strut. The absence of this parameter introduces an artificial restriction on the particles' angular momenta, making it impossible to find a physical solution to the balance equations., Comment: 9 pages; to appear in Gravitation & Cosmology

The specific incidence of radio flares appears to be significantly larger than that of the prompt optical emission. This abundance, coupled with the reverse shock interpretation suggests that radio flares add a unique probe on the physics of GRB shocks. Motivated thus, we estimate the strength of the reverse shock expected for bursts in which multi-wavelength observations have allowed the physical parameters of the forward shock to be determined. We use all 6 bursts (980519, 990123, 990510, 991208, 991216, 000418) which are found to be adiabatic and thus predicted to have a strong reverse shock. We aim to constrain the hydrodynamic evolution of the reverse shock and the initial bulk Lorentz factor -- which we found to be between $10^{2}$ and $10^{3}$ and well above the lower limits derived from the requirement that gamma-ray bursts be optically thin to high-energy photons. In half of the cases we improve the description of the early afterglow lightcurves by adding a contribution from the reverse shock. Modelling of this early emission provides the opportunity to investigate the immediate surroundings of the burst. For 991216 and 991208, the expected $1/r^2$ density structure for a stellar wind is not compatible with the early afterglow lightcurves. Considering the radial range relevant to these GRBs, we discuss the conditions under which the inclusion of a wind termination shock may resolve the absence of a $1/r^2$ density profile., Comment: 12 pages, accepted to MNRAS

The recent report of iron line features in the afterglow of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) 991216 has important implications for the properties of the radiating material and hence the nature of the immediate burst environment. We argue that the putative strong Fe emission line can be attributed to the reflected emission from Thomson-thick matter which is illuminated by a power-law continuum. The ionization parameter of the material (i.e., the flux to density ratio) is around 10^3, resulting in a Fe K line from He-like iron. A supersolar abundance of iron is not required by the data. Interestingly, the ionizing continuum must be harder than the observed one. We interpret this as due to the fact that the observed continuum is dominated by the standard blast wave emission, while the line is produced by reprocessing material located at much smaller radii., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted by A&A Letters

This letter presents wide-field optical and and NIR UBVRI,Halpha,K' images of the galaxy M74 which were taken between 0.6-8.3 years before the discovery of the Type Ic SN2002ap. We have located the position of the SN on these images with an accuracy of 0.3''. We find no sign of a progenitor object on any of the images. The deepest of these images is the B-band exposure which has a sensitivity limit corresponding to an absolute magnitude of M_B <= -6.3. From our observed limits, we rule out as the progenitor all evolved states of single stars with initial masses greater than 20Msol unless the WR phase has been entered. Two popular theories for the origin of Type Ic SNe are the core collapse of massive stars when they are in the WR phase, or the core collapse of a massive star in an interacting binary which has had its envelope stripped through mass transfer. Our prediscovery images are sensitive only to the most luminous ~30% of WR stars, leaving a substantial fraction of typical WR stars as viable progenitors. The energetics measured from modelling the spectral evolution of SN 2002ap suggest an explosion of a 5Msol C+O core. While WR stars generally have measured final masses greater than this, the uncertainties associated with the explosion model, stellar evolutionary calculations and mass measurements suggest we cannot definitively rule out a WR star progenitor. The alternative scenario is that the progenitor was a star of initial mass 20-25Msol which was part of an interacting binary. We investigate the relationship between the quasi-thermal baryon-related photosphere in relativistic outflows, and the internal shocks arising outside them, which out to a limiting radius may be able to create enough pairs to extend the optically thick region. Variable gamma-ray light curves are likely to arise outside this limiting pair-forming shock radius, while X-ray excess bursts may arise from shocks occurring below it; a possible relation to X-ray flashes is discussed. Westerbork Radio Synthesis Telescope observation of the galaxy VV29=Arp188=UGC10214 shows that there are at least three distinct dynamical components whose kinematics can be traced in 21cm line emission. The system appears to be the result of a galaxy-galaxy interaction. We identify a sufficient number of dynamical elements containing baryons (stars and neutral gas) that there is no compelling reason to postulate the presence of an additional dark matter halo that is devoid of detectable baryons. The central galaxy VV29a is massive (V_rot = 330 km/s) and gas rich (M_HI} = 6x10^9 Msolar). The distinctive optical plume (VV29b), which extends eastward from the main galaxy, is also gas rich (M_HI = 3x10^9 Msolar) and has a very low gradient in line of sight velocity (<30 km/s) over 70kpc. On the western side, there is an HI feature of M_HI = 4x10^8 Msolar that participates strongly in orbital motion about the host in the same sense of rotation as the VV29a itself. A blue, less massive, gas-rich galaxy "VV29c" (M_HI = 9x10^8 Msolar) appears clearly in the HI maps as an 170 km/s wide spectral feature, seen in projection against or, more likely, behind the west side of the host disk. Its high recessional velocity is counter to the host rotation direction. The optical images of Trentham et al (2001) show signs of this blue dwarf against the redder VV29a disk. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the late afterglow of GRB 000911, starting ~1 day after the burst event and lasting ~8 weeks. We detect a moderately significant re-brightening in the R, I and J lightcurves, associated with a sizable reddening of the spectrum. This can be explained through the presence of an underlying supernova, outshining the afterglow ~30 days after the burst event. To compare two space-times on large domains, and in particular the global structure of their manifolds, requires using identical frames of reference and associated coordinate conditions. In this paper we use and compare two classes of time-like congruences and corresponding adapted coordinates: the harmonic and quo-harmonic classes. Besides the intrinsic definition and some of their intrinsic properties and differences we consider with some detail their differences at the level of the linearized approximation of the field equations. The hard part of this paper is an explicit and general determination of the harmonic and quo-harmonic coordinates adapted to the stationary character of three well-know metrics, Schwarzschild's, Curzon's and Kerr's, to order five of their asymptotic expansions.
