In this paper, we investigate the evolution from imperatives to discourse markers in Romance, with a corpus-based approach. We focus on the case of items coming from verbs meaning ‘to look’, in a semasiological perspective: Spanish and Catalan mira, Portuguese olha, Italian guarda, French regarde, Romanian uite. We show that they all share many uses, among which turn-taking, introduction of reported speech, hesitation phenomenon, topic-shifting and modalization, except for French regarde. We then establish (against Waltereit, 2002) that the development of these uses is the result of a process of grammaticalization, from lexical, clause-internal uses to uses as discourse markers, in a cline which tends to confirm the predictions made by Brinton and Traugott (2005). The lesser grammaticalization of French regarde could seem unimportant, but is in apparent contradiction with the now well-established fact that French is, of all Romance languages, the most grammaticalized. We try, in conclusion, to address this paradox: is French not so grammaticalized after all, or is this just an exception to the rule?

The peripheral dialects of Arabic tend to differ from the core dialects by having an important component derived from anther languages or language group. In the case of Maltese this non-Arabic component has been alost entirely of Romance origin until comparative recently, when English began to play a part. The Romance component is frequently more closely defined by stating that it is Italian, or Sicilian, or Siculo-Italian. It is the purpose of this paper to examine this component and try and understand the role that it has played in the formation of moderbn Maltese.

This chapter examines the history and developments in Francophone studies in Great Britain during the twentieth century. It explains that the study of Old French in Great Britain began very soon after the establishment of chairs of French in British universities and that as the last decade of the twentieth century dawned, twenty-nine British universities were teaching Old French as a component of a French degree course and 90 per cent of them as an obligatory element involving sixty-two specialist teachers. This trend suggests the continuing vigour of Anglo-Norman studies, which had already run such a successful course since the beginning of the century.

This chapter examines British studies and research with regard to medieval Italian poet Dante Alighieri. It explains that Dante and his Divina commedia have been a central preoccupation of British Italianists throughout the twentieth century and that it was the focus of the first two volumes of the influential Cambridge Studies on Medieval Literature series. Notable general studies of the Commedia include Sir Cyril Hinshelwood's article on its imagery, Sheila Ralphs' short book on allegorical patterns, and two longer books by Jeremy Tambling and Patrick Boyde.

This chapter examines the history and developments in the study of medieval Hispanic literatures in Great Britain during the twentieth century. It explains that the importance of Hispanic studies in British universities increased greatly after the end of the First World War and that by 1925 there were four professorships in Spanish studies. The first chair of Spanish studies in Cambridge was J.B. Trend. Other notable British hispanists include William James Entwistle and Gerald Brenan.

Iorgu Iordan is considered the patriarch of Romanian Linguistics in the 20th century and is internationally recognized as an expert on comparative studies of the Romance languages. One of his books, Introducere in linguistica romanica (1957), was translated into many languages and is still an indispensable title in every bibliography concerning Romance Linguistics. He founded the Institute of Linguistics of Bucharest, nowadays named after him, and was, with the exception of the period between 1953 and 1957, its director from 1949 to 1970.

G. I. Ascoli was the founder of Romance studies in Italy and a professor at Milan University. He described Ladin and Franco-Provencal as languages which caused a polemic discussion with French linguists. In 1873, Ascoli founded the famous periodical Archivio glottologico italiano (‘Archive on Italian language studies’). In his comparative studies, Ascoli assumed a structural similarity between Indo-European and Non-Indo-European. Ascoli explained many exceptions of today's Italian dialects by a supposed pre-Latin, e.g., Gallic, substratum.

Andorra is in southwestern Europe, situated in the eastern Pyrenees between France and Spain. Catalan, a Romance language of the Western Branch, is the only official language of Andorra. Not only the geographical situation of Andorra but also its history are responsible for the influence of the Spanish and the French languages in Andorra. In the streets, Spanish is widely spoken, followed by Portuguese and French. Nowadays, there is a perceived need to regulate and normalize the use of Catalan in Andorra.

Brigitte Schlieben-Lange was one of the first women to obtain a chair of Romance Philology in the German-speaking academic world. Early on in her career she focused on Occitan and Catalan; later she most often worked on French, Spanish, and Italian, and in the late 1990s on Brazilian Portuguese.

Friedrich Christian Diez (1794–1876) is regarded as the founding father of Romance philology. His main achievement lies in the rigorous application of the historical-comparative approach to the field of Romance languages. His two main works not only offered the first scientifically reliable synthesis in comparative grammar and etymology; they also pointed to problems and topics that remained to be studied in greater depth. His last work on word formation is perhaps his most original contribution to Romance linguistics.

Vilem Mathesius (1882–1946) was a Czech linguist and the founder and president of the Prague Linguistics Circle. Mathesius specialized in Germanic and Romance studies at Charles University in Prague and later became that university's first professor of ‘Anglistics.’ He wrote widely on topics in English philology and linguistics, but also on more general topics in linguistic theory. His 1911 paper On the potentiality of the phenomena of language was an early classic of European structuralism and echoed some of the ideas expressed in Ferdinand de Saussure's Course in general linguistics , in particular the distinction between the synchronic and the diachronic study of language, and that between language and speech.

This article is a biography of Donna Jo Napoli (b. 1948), a syntaction whose interests include syntax, phonetics, phonology, morphology, historical and comparative linguistics, Romance studies, structure of Japanese, structure of American Sign Language, Poetics, Poetry workshops, dialogue, fiction and a creative writer, whose works include co-edited anthologies of poetry composed by linguists. The article details Napoli's life story, surveys her achievements and most prominent accomplishments, and provides a representative selection of her writings.
