Abstract

This contribution examines the trajectory of rural territoriality, particularly in Latin America, based on four narratives from different periods of the past century: agrarian structuralism, regional-cultural, systemic-functional and new ruralities. Critical readings of some social science bibliographic sources reveal that the traditional rural-territorial relationship, based fundamentally on agriculture, has been repositioned in academic and public policy spheres by accelerated global changes. However, the instantaneousness and simultaneity of socio-economic, cultural, environmental and spatial activities complicated, even more, its explanation and theoretical interpretation. In fact, territorial approaches and new ruralities advance more in the empirical dimension than in the epistemological one, an evident trend in the adoption of rural territorial development in several countries of the region. This is why the theoretical interpretation of rural territories continues to represent a challenge in the social sciences.

Abstract

The world currently faces a pandemic due to SARS-CoV-2. Relevant information has emerged regarding the higher risk of poor outcomes in lung cancer patients. As such, lung cancer patients must be prioritized in terms of prevention, detection and treatment. On May 7th, 45 experts in thoracic cancers from 11 different countries were invited to participate. A core panel of experts regarding thoracic oncology care amidst the pandemic gathered virtually, and a total of 60 initial recommendations were drafted based on available evidence, 2 questions were deleted due to conflicting evidence. By May 16th, 44 experts had agreed to participate, and voted on each of the 58 recommendation using a Delphi panel on a live voting event. Consensus was reached regarding the recommendations (> 66 % strongly agree/agree) for 56 questions. Strong consensus (> 80 % strongly agree/agree) was reached for 44 questions. Patients with lung cancer represent a particularly vulnerable population during this time. Special care must be taken to maintain treatment while avoiding exposure.

Abstract

Precision oncology is the field that places emphasis on the diagnosis and treatment of tumors that harbor specific genomic alterations susceptible to inhibition or modulation. Although most alterations are only present in a minority of patients, a substantial effect on survival can be observed in this subgroup. Mass genome sequencing has led to the identification of a specific driver in the translocations of the tropomyosin receptor kinase family (NTRK) in a subset of rare tumors both in children and in adults, and to the development and investigation of Larotrectinib. This medication was granted approval by the US Food and Drug Administration for NTRK-positive tumors, regardless of histology or age group, as such, larotrectinib was the first in its kind to be approved under the premise that molecular pattern is more important than histology in terms of therapeutic approach. It yielded significant results in disease control with good tolerability across a wide range of diseases including rare pediatric tumors, salivary gland tumors, gliomas, soft-tissue sarcomas, and thyroid carcinomas. In addition, and by taking different approaches in clinical trial design and conducting allocation based on biomarkers, the effects of target therapies can be isolated and quantified. Moreover, and considering developing nations and resource-limited settings, precision oncology could offer a tool to reduce cancer-related disability and hospital costs. In addition, developing nations also present patients with rare tumors that lack a chance of treatment, outside of clinical trials. This, in turn, offers the possibility for international collaboration, and contributes to employment, education, and health service provisions. Abstract

The infections causes by Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), family Togaviridae, genus Alfavirus, have become a health problem around the world, due to its widespread occurrence, the high morbidity rate and the absence of vaccines or antiviral treatments. We analyzed a competitive inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase, enzyme key in the biosynthesis of Polyamines (PAs), N-ω-chloroacetyl-L-ornithine (NCAO), as a possible inhibitor of CHIKV replication because intracellular polyamines participate in the transcription andin vitrotranslation of CHIKV. NCAO does not have any cytotoxic effect on C6/36 cells even at a concentration of 1000μM at 72h after post-exposure but in Vero cells the cytotoxic effect was presented above 380μM at 48h post-exposure, which was considered when determining the inhibitory effect on viral replication. We demonstrate that NCAO inhibits the replication of CHIKV in Vero and C6/36 cells in a dose-dependent manner causing a decrease in the PFU/mL of at least 4-logarithm (p ImportanceThe infections caused by Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), genus Alfavirus, have become a worldwide health problem, due to its high morbidity rate and the absence of vaccines or antiviral treatments. It is known that CHIKV use intracellular poliamines during transcription and traduction process, so the depletion of intracellular putrescine, spermidine and spermine reduce the viral replication. N-ω-chloroacetyl-L-ornithine (NCAO) is known as a competitive inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase, key enzyme in Polyamines biosynthesis, but no studies have proven its activity on the inhibition of polyamine-dependent viral replication. Here we demonstrate NCAO inhibits in vitro CHIKV replication, so we propose NCAO as an antiviral candidate.
