The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) spends billions of dollars a year acquiring software, a great deal of which never gets used. Although a large portion of this software is sole source, considerable savings may be realized through the development of a check-in/check-out (CICO) system for software. Such a system would be similar to a library or a video rental store. The purpose of this Joint Applied Project is to offer a broad examination of the cost of commercial software procurement in the U.S. Department of Defense. Following an analysis of cost versus usage data, we propose that potential significant cost savings in commercial software procurement can be accomplished by implementing a check-in/check-out (CICO) system for software.

An experimental investigation of acoustic imaging in water is made at an ultrasonic frequency of U55 KHz. Using optical principles, the theory of image formation and resolution are discussed. The range capability of such a system is predicted by the use of underwater acoustic theory. The apparatus consists of a basic imaging system that provides a set of d.c. voltages, proportional to sound intensity at points in the image plane, to be applied to a visual display system. Such a display will present a two dimensional image of an insonified underwater target. Mobile devices in the near future will need to collaborate to fulfill their function. Collaboration will be done by communication. We use a real world example of robotic soccer to come up with the necessary structures required for robotic communication. A review of related work is done and it is found no examples come close to providing a RANET. The robotic ad hoc network (RANET) we suggest uses existing structures pulled from the areas of wireless networks, peer to peer and software life-cycle management. Gaps are found in the existing structures so we describe how to extend some structures to satisfy the design. The RANET design supports robot cooperation by exchanging messages, discovering needed skills that other robots on the network may possess and the transfer of these skills. The network is built on top of a Bluetooth wireless network and uses JXTA to communicate and transfer skills. OSGi bundles form the skills that can be transferred. To test the nal design a reference implementation is done. Deficiencies in some third party software is found, specifically JXTA and JamVM and GNU Classpath. Lastly we look at how to fix the deciencies by porting the JXTA C implementation to the target robotic platform and potentially eliminating the TCP/IP layer, using UDP instead of TCP or using an adaptive TCP/IP stack. We also propose a future areas of investigation; how to seed the configuration for the Personal area network (PAN) Bluetooth protocol extension so a Bluetooth TCP/IP link is more quickly formed and using the STP to allow multi-hop messaging and transfer of skills.

Samples taken from the Dome C ice core, Antarctica, and the GRIP ice core, Greenland, are examined using the scanning electron microscope to determine their microstructure. In both cores, samples are taken from two differing climatic periods: the Holocene and the last glacial period. Many of the usual features observed in similar samples under the light microscope are observed, including: bubbles, grain boundaries and clathrate hydrates. Features not resolvable using the light microscope are also found. Dust particles are found in situ. Eighty-five per cent of those observed contained silicon, which was generally associated with aluminium and magnesium. An estimation is made of the relative proportions of dust particles located at grain boundaries and in the bulk of the ice grain. At Dome C a higher proportion than expected from a random distribution of particles was found located at grain boundaries, although in Greenland this was not found to be the case for most samples. Direct evidence is also presented indicating the role of dust particles and microscopical inclusions in impeding or "pinning" grain-boundary migration. Soluble impurities are also detected at some triple junctions and grain boundaries.
