In the present work, a new equation to predict the maximum inter-story drift demands of mid-rise steel framed buildings is proposed in terms of a new ground motion intensity measures based on the spectral shape. For this aim, the maxim\um inter-story drift of steel frames with 4, 6, 8 and 10 stories subjected to several narrow-band ground motions is estimated as a function of the spectral acceleration at first mode of vibration Sa(T
1 ), which is commonly used in earthquake engineering and seismology, and with a new parameter related to the structural response known as INp . It is observed that the spectral-shape-based intensity measure INp is the parameter best related with the structural response of the selected steel frames under narrow-band motions. For this reason, an equation to compute the maximum inter-story drift demand of mid-rise steel frames as a function of INp is proposed. The equation is useful for the rapid seismic assessment. To determine the distribution of serum lipids in children and adolescents of Florianopolis, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. To determine the association between undesirable levels for total cholesterol (170 mg/dL) and others coronary heart disease risks factors.A questionnaire, physical examination and blood analyses were collected from randomized sample from school kids aged range from 7 to 18 years old.1,053 students participated, aged between 7 and 18 years old. They presented a total cholesterol mean of 162+/-28 mg/dl, triglyceride mean of 93+/-47 mg/dl, HDL-cholesterol mean of 53+/-10 mg/dl, LDL-cholesterol mean of 92+/-24 mg/dl and non-HDL cholesterol mean of 109+/-26 mg/dl. The TC/HDL and LDL/HDL mean rates were, respectively, 3.1+/-0.6 and 1.8+/-0.5. Findings showed that private school children, 10 years old or less, girls and black children had higher lipids values. Overall findings suggest that the best logistic regression model which explained abnormal total cholesterol levels included: obesity, stroke and heart attack familial history, feminine gender, age of 10 years old or less and overweight body image determined on inspection. In comparison to international literature, our results, showed intermediated total cholesterol, lower LDL-cholesterol and non-HDL-cholesterol and higher HDL-cholesterol. Therefore, primary prevention programs are needed to be carrying out, especially among overweight children and adolescents so to prevent ischemic heart disease as adulthood.

The present study analyzed the effects of physical and psychological stressors on behavior, immune function, and serum corticosterone in mice. Adult mice were submitted once daily, for 6 days to one of the following conditions: escapable (ES) or inescapable (IS) footshocks (0.2 mA) signaled by a tone cue or to a psychological stressor (PS) generated through the use of a communication box; in this box, mice received no footshock but were exposed to responses delivered by IS mice. Results showed that IS and PS: (1). decreased locomotor activity observed in an open-field; (2). decreased number of entries into the open arms and decreased time spent in the exploration of the open arms of the plus-maze; (3). decreased macrophage spreading and phagocytosis; (4). increased macrophage H(2)O(2) release; and (5). increased growth of the ascitic form of Ehrlich tumor. Behavioral and/or immunological changes were not observed after ES; this absence of effects, however, might not be attributed solely to footshock controllability since mice of groups ES and IS differed with respect to the psychological setting used and the amount of shock they received. An increase of serum corticosterone concentrations was also observed in the stressed mice of all groups; this increment was higher in animals of group IS. These data provide evidence that inescapable footshock and psychological stressors alter, at the same time and in mice, stress levels, macrophage activity, and Ehrlich tumor growth. They also show that ES and PS induced similarly elevated serum corticosterone concentrations, but significantly differ in the immunological and behavioral outcomes they produced in mice. These findings suggest that another factor besides HPA axis activation might be responsible for behavioral and immunological consequences of IS and PS in mice. It is proposed that the final neural link between behavioral and immunological changes observed after physical and psychological stressors might involve catecholaminergic systems within the central nervous system and/or sympathetic autonomic nerve fibers and also opioid peptides.

The main objective of this work is to compute the probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for a region of Mexico using a new ground motion intensity measure which is based on the spectral acceleration and a parameter proxy of the spectral shape named Np. The motivation of using this new ground motion intensity measure is because recently it has demonstrated its potential in predicting the response of buildings subjected to earthquakes. In fact, it was demonstrated that intensity measures based on Np are more efficient compared with other parameter of the literature. It is important to mention that this is the first time that a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is performed using this new intensity measurement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ObjectiveTo assess the efficacy of two school-based programmes to promote students’ willingness to engage in lifestyle changes related to eating habits and physical activity behaviours.DesignElementary school-based health promotion intervention, designed as a multicomponent experimental study, based on a behavioural epidemiological model.SettingNine intervention and eight comparative public and private elementary schools.SubjectsThe goal was to determine the impact on the longitudinally assessed outcomes of two programmes that addressed healthy nutrition and active living in a cohort of 2038 children. The evaluations used pre-intervention and follow-up student surveys that were based on the Transtheoretical Model of the stages of behaviour change.ResultsIn the intervention group, there were significant (P < 0·001) differences between the pre- and post-intervention times in the stages of change, with a reduction in the percentage of children at the pre-contemplation and contemplation stages and increased percentages at the preparation, action and maintenance stages, leading to healthier behaviours in fatty food consumption, fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity and time spent in sedentary activities. The determinants of the behaviour stage were the intervention programme, the type of school and the presence of motivated teachers. The comparison group did not show significant differences between the pre- and post-intervention times for any of the stages of behaviour.ConclusionsThe intervention programme encouraged the students to make healthy lifestyle choices related to eating habits and physical activity behaviours. Marcuse emphasizes a dialectical relationship between aesthetics and politics. Art promotes liberation through the education of sensibility and critique of reality--the Great Refusal--while still embodying elements of the ideological system of domination. Thus, although art itself cannot change the world, it can move people to social change. In this respect, the Great Refusal serves an important political role in challenging the Establishment. This paper argues for the continued theoretical relevance of the Great Refusal and for its practical possibilities in transforming society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

222. Chapter 53: On the Principles of Political Morality That Must Guide the Nationale Convention in the Internal Administration of the Republic.

- Abstract
Arguably, the best-known of Robespierre's speeches, his Principles of Political Morality…. seeks to define the operative principles of the Republic and those of the Revolutionary Government charged with creating the conditions that would allow it to survive. A love of virtue (without which no republic can exist), a love of equality (without which no democracy is possible) lead necessarily to the citizenry preferring the public interest to the limited, the contemptable interest of the isolated self. Consequently, the Republic is the point where morality and politics intersect, where the love of the people for themselves is simultaneously love of the country that makes real all that is most desireable in human existence and without which this existence would be (as it had been) impoverished. On the other hand, if the people are led by reason, their enemies are not. And thus the Revolutionary Government's recourse to terror, which is nothing else but the principles of justice (i.e. reason) applied vigorously to the enemies of liberty and equality, that is, to the enemies of morality, to the criminally irrational. - Abstract
The Jacobins/Montagnards never denied that their assault on Condorcet's proposed constitution was politically motivated. Which is no reason to dismiss it. Conceivably, the tenor of the debate would have been more civil had both groups been motivated by nothing more than an impassioned desire to present the country with the best of all possible constitutions, but possibly not. In any case, purity of intent is not the issue. Having decided to attack Condorcet's effort, what remained to be determined by Robes- pierre et. a!. was on what basis, where and how-that is, it became necessary for them to identify those sections of the proposal that could be shown to be wanting and then successfully demonstrate (or, since this was a political situation, successfully exploit) the weaknesses. To this juncture at least, the most dispassionate of academic critics could not behave any more objectively. What this meant concretely began to become apparent on April 2115, 1793 when, at the Jacobin Club, Robespierre read his counter- proposal to the Declaration of Rights that had accompanied the constitution reported out of committee two months earlier; three days later, he shared his thoughts and criticisms with the Convention…. - Abstract
Among the four natural rights recognized by the Declaration of August 26, 1789 [N° 12] was resistance to oppression. Should those in government fail to protect the liberties of the nation or run roughshod over them, the citizens had the right to resist force with force and change the composition or indeed the structure of the state. Easy to say, but if it comes down to it, how was this supposed to be accomplished? Was it not the state that had the weapons? But it was not quite that simple, and therein lies the drama of the National Guard or citizen militia during the Revolution. On the one hand, it was an arm of the state whose role was to maintain law and order; on the other, its mission was to defy, and, if need be, overthrow or purify the state. In the final analysis, the force of the people, so frequently vaunted during Year II of the Republic, was the force of the National Guard units that adopted their position. Conversely, the force of the government was the force of the units that supported it%#x2026;. Although not as widely known as some of Robespierre's other efforts, his observations on the Guard testify eloquently to his democratic orientation. In fact, his writing does more than point out that all citizens, regardless of wealth, should have the right to bear arms in defense of the country and its laws, or that those who are deprived of this right stand powerless before those who are not. Or that the latter are their de facto masters. Building upon the perception that the same persons who have been denied the right to protect themselves are those who have been denied the right to participate in the formation of the law, Robespierre delivers a defense of the people while unleashing a bitter critique of laws and a constitution "that have not been established so that the general interest be realized, but instead for the private benefit of a certain class of men, that …. are not the common property of all members of society, but the patrimony of the rich…." All of which will become common fare after the overthrow of the monarchy (by National Guard units), but in late 1790 was neither commonplace nor popular among the nation's representatives. - Abstract
• Sucrose increases kinetic parameters of equine spermatozoa. • The integrity of the plasma and acrosome membrane of equine semen is preserved by sucrose. • Sucrose alters the mitochondrial membrane potential of equine sperm. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sucrose on post-thawed equine semen quality. Semen samples (n = 24) were collected from six stallions. They were diluted (200 × 10
6 sperm/mL) in a freezing medium based on skimmed milk, egg yolk, dimethylformamide, and supplemented with sucrose at concentrations of 0 (Control), 25, 50, and 100 mM and in a commercial extender (BotuCrio). Subsequently, they were filled in straws (0.5 mL) and subjected to freezing and storage (−196°C). Immediately after thawing (37°C, 30 seconds), semen samples were evaluated for kinetics (CASA), plasma and acrosomal membrane integrity, and mitochondrial membrane potential (flow cytometry). The addition of 50 and 100mM sucrose to the freezing extender increased (P <.05) the parameters of TM, PM, VCL, VSL, and VAP, compared to the control group. The WOB parameter of the group supplemented with 100 mM sucrose was higher (P <.05) than the control group. Higher values (P <.05) of ALH and BCF were observed in groups treated with sucrose (25, 50, and 100 mM), compared to BotuCrio. The semen frozen in the presence of 100 mM sucrose presented higher percentages (P <.05) of sperm with intact plasma and acrosomal membranes, and high mitochondrial membrane potential in relation to the other groups. It is concluded that the addition of sucrose to equine semen freezing extender increase motility (50 and 100 mM), plasma and acrosomal membrane integrity preserve, and high sperm mitochondrial membrane potential (100 mM) after thawing. - Abstract
We investigated whether the recombinant leptin (1, 10, 100 ng/mL) influences the meiotic maturation of goat oocytes, whether the MAPK and JAK2/STAT3 pathways mediate the effects of leptin during in-vitromaturation, and whether leptin differently affects the abundance of mRNAs relevant to leptin signal transduction and apoptosis in oocytes and cumulus cells. The addition of leptin to the maturation medium positively affected the number of oocytes that completed nuclear maturation. Nuclear oocyte maturation stimulated by leptin was significantly impaired when we added the specific inhibitors of MAPK (U0126) and JAK2/STAT3 (AG490) to the maturation medium. The addition of leptin (10 ng/mL) during maturation did not affect the expression of AMPKα1, PPARα, Caspase 3, and BCL2genes in oocytes or cumulus cells. The PPARγand BAXmRNA abundances were significantly reduced in cumulus cells in the leptin group compared to the control group. Our results demonstrate that supplementation of the in-vitromaturation medium with leptin significantly improves nuclear maturation and reveal the important role of the MAPK and JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathways in establishing the leptin-mediated nuclear maturation of goat oocytes. Moreover, leptin treatment affects PPARγand BAXgene expression in cumulus cells.

Background: Record linkage is the process of identifying and combining records about the same individual from two or more different datasets. While there are many open source and commercial data linkage tools, the volume and complexity of currently available datasets for linkage pose a huge challenge; hence, designing an efficient linkage tool with reasonable accuracy and scalability is required. Methods: We developed CIDACS-RL (Centre for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health - Record Linkage), a novel iterative deterministic record linkage algorithm based on a combination of indexing search and scoring algorithms (provided by Apache Lucene). We described how the algorithm works and compared its performance with four open source linkage tools (AtyImo, Febrl, FRIL and RecLink) in terms of sensitivity and positive predictive value using gold standard dataset. We also evaluated its accuracy and scalability using a case-study and its scalability and execution time using a simulated cohort in serial (single core) and multi-core (eight core) computation settings. Results: Overall, CIDACS-RL algorithm had a superior performance: positive predictive value (99.93% versus AtyImo 99.30%, RecLink 99.5%, Febrl 98.86%, and FRIL 96.17%) and sensitivity (99.87% versus AtyImo 98.91%, RecLink 73.75%, Febrl 90.58%, and FRIL 74.66%). In the case study, using a ROC curve to choose the most appropriate cut-off value (0.896), the obtained metrics were: sensitivity = 92.5% (95% CI 92.07-92.99), specificity = 93.5% (95% CI 93.08-93.8) and area under the curve (AUC) = 97% (95% CI 96.97-97.35). The multi-core computation was about four times faster (150 seconds) than the serial setting (550 seconds) when using a dataset of 20 million records. Conclusion: CIDACS-RL algorithm is an innovative linkage tool for huge datasets, with higher accuracy, improved scalability, and substantially shorter execution time compared to other existing linkage tools. In addition, CIDACS-RL can be deployed on standard computers without the need for high-speed processors and distributed infrastructures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
This study investigated the cryoprotectant effects of dimethylformamide (DMF), ethylene glycol (EG), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as substitutes for glycerol (GLY) in a soybean lecithin (SL)-based extender in the cryopreservation of buck sperm. In this study, the semen of three Saanen bucks was individually extended in SL supplemented with 5% GLY (control), DMF, EG, or DMSO. After this, the extended semen was cryopreserved and two straws from each group were thawed (37°C for 30 seconds), pooled, and analyzed for sperm motion parameters, plasma membrane integrity (PMI), acrosomal integrity (ACI), and high mitochondrial membrane potential (HMMP). Samples were analyzed after 15 minutes (T0) and after 2 hours of incubation at 37°C (T2). The results revealed higher values of motility (total and progressive) and sperm motion parameters for DMF than the other cryoprotectants (p< 0.0001). PMI and HMMP did not differ (p> 0.05) between GLY and DMF, but ACI was higher (p< 0.01) for DMF compared with GLY. Based on these results, DMF and GLY samples were used in heterologous in vitrofertilization assays by using bovine oocytes (n= 337) obtained from a slaughterhouse. No differences (p> 0.05) were observed between GLY and DMF for unfertilized (GLY: 38.8%; DMF: 25.33%), pronucleus (GLY: 25.68%; DMF: 27.92%), and cleavage rates (GLY: 35.52%; DMF: 46.75%). Based on these results, it is concluded that DMF preserves sperm motion characteristics and ACI better than GLY, EG, and DMSO, and it is the penetrating cryoprotectant of choice for the cryopreservation of buck sperm in SL extender.
