Abstract

This paper investigates a particular aspect of learner participation - students´ analysis (SA) in an oral communication program of an undergraduate business and commerce curriculum in Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman - and examines its role in improving and promoting learning effectiveness in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classroom discourse. Drawing on the results of a set of surveys into needs analysis, students´ peer response and student feedback, it is suggested that SA can play a significant role by providing wider input into the content, design and implementation of an EAP course by creating opportunities to engage students in interesting and meaningful classroom experiences and providing essential data for reviewing and evaluating the course to improve and promote its effectiveness. Este artículo investiga un aspecto particular de la participación del estudiante - análisis de los estudiantes en un programa de comunicación oral del currículo de un pregrado en negocios y comercio de la Universidad Sultan Qaboos del Sultanato de Oman - y examina su rol en el mejoramiento y promoción de la efectividad del aprendizaje en el discurso del aula de inglés con propósitos académicos. Basado en los resultados de una serie de encuestas sobre análisis de necesidades, respuesta a pares y retroalimentación del estudiante, se puede sugerir que el análisis de los estudiantes (SA) tiene un papel significativo en cuanto proporciona un insumo más amplio en el contenido, diseño e implementación de un curso de inglés con propósitos académicos, ofreciendo así mayores oportunidades para involucrar a los estudiantes en experiencias interesantes y significativas en el aula y brindando información esencial para la revisión y evaluación del curso, para así mejorar y promover su efectividad.

227. Exploring the Bio-efficacies of Methanolic Extracts of Nostoc muscorum and Calothrix brevissima with their Characterization Using GC-MS

Abstract

Background: Cyanobacteria are rich source of secondary metabolites being studied for their potential pharmaceutical applications. Objective: We studied methanolic extracts of two cyanobacteria- Nostoc muscorum NCCU-442 and Calothrix brevissima NCCU-65 for their bioactivities. Method: The phenolic content was estimated by Follin-Ciocalteu method. FRAP assay, DPPH, ABTS and SOR scavenging assays were performed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of extracts. Antimicrobial effect was studied against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans by agar well diffusion assay. MTT assay was performed on cancerous HepG2 cells and Noncancerous HEK-293 cell lines to determine the anti-proliferative activity. Apoptosis was studied through DNA fragmentation assay and fluorescent microscopy. The composition of the test extracts was determined using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). Results: Methanolic extract of N. muscorum NCCU-442 showed slightly higher phenolic content (55.67±0.85 mg GAE/g) than the extract of C. brevissima NCCU-65 (55.38±2.28 mg GAE/g). N. muscorum extract was observed to be the best for scavenging DPPH, ABTS radical and superoxide radicals, whereas, C. brevissima extract was better for FRAP assay. Both the extracts showed promising antimicrobial activities against given microbes. As compared to N. muscorum extract, C. brevissima extract was found to be more effective against HepG2 cell lines with IC50 value = 210.5 µg/ml. At IC50 values the extracts showed evident morphological characteristics of apoptosis. Various probable bioactive constituents were identified in the GC-MS analysis. Conclusion: The test extracts revealed that the given cyanobacterial strains have promising bioactive potential and could be developed in future as the pharmaceutical sources.

Abstract

Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is aimed at evaluating the expression of NF-κβ, IL-1α, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α in patients with RIOM so as to validate their role in the pathobiology of the disease. Blood samples were collected and serum of 45 patients isolated with clinical signs and symptoms of mucositis and 10 healthy controls were also included in the study. The expression level of NF-κβ, IL-1α, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α was investigated using ELISA. Mann Whitney U test was applied to find the significance of the expression of these markers in RIOM patients as compared to normal healthy controls and significant expression (P< 0.05) for NF-κβ, IL-6, TNF-α and non-significant expression (P > 0.05) IL-1α and IL-8 was found. No significant change in the expression level of the cytokines was observed for patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy as well as those receiving only the radiation therapy as a part of their treatment. We have also found less expression in grade 1 of mucositis as compared to grade 4. Pro-inflammatory cytokines indeed play a vital role in the pathogenesis as well as progression of RIOM. Abstract

Novel monocyclic β-lactam derivatives bearing aryl, phenyl and heterocyclic rings were synthesized as possible antibacterial agents. Cyclization of imines (3h,3t) with phenylacetic acid in the presence of phosphoryl chloride and triethyl amine did not afford the expected β-lactams. Instead, highly substituted 1,3-oxazin-4-ones (4h,4t) were isolated as the only product and confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis of4t. The results of antibacterial activity showed that compound4lexhibited considerable antibacterial activity with MIC and MBC values of 62.5 µg/mL againstKlebsiella pneumoniae. Cytotoxicity assay on Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell line revealed non-cytotoxic behavior of compounds4d,4h,4kand4lup to 200 μg/mL conc. Molecular docking was performed for compound4lwith penicillin binding protein-5 to identify the nature of interactions. The results of bothin silicoandin vitroevaluation provide the basis for compound4lto be carried as a potential lead molecule in the drug discovery pipeline against bacterial infections. 250. Student Self-Assessment in ESP: A Study of Students' Learning Perceptions

Abstract

This paper describes the results of an investigation into the effectiveness of students' self-assessment analysis (SSA) as a diagnostic technique to obtain students' learning perceptions - and examines its role in improving learning effectiveness in an ESP oral communication program. The students were asked to fill in four self-assessment questionnaires, two during the course and two at the end of the course, to obtain relevant information about their perception of their skills in oral presentation at the time of taking the course and then at the end of the course. The results suggest that SSA can play a significant role by providing wider input into the implementation of an oral communications course and promote its effectiveness.
