- Abstract
The expansion of major cities regardless of the scientific planning principles has led to the emergence of negative urban development impacts in Iran such as the degradation of natural resources and various forms of pollution. Undoubtedly, urban rivers can enhance the ecological value of the earth to an optimal extent. However, to benefit from these potentials, appropriate planning looks inevitable. Due to the lack of data and information, analyzing the quality of these resources requires the application of new methods which consider the uncertainties and complexities of the issue in the decision making. This research presents an application of fuzzy TOPSIS multi attribute group decision making to identify factors causing land degradation, distinguish the most optimal areas based on their ecological values and provide suggestions on landscape improvement. To this end, the development of Shiraz city along the Khoshk River corridor was investigated using the 1:25000 maps and satellite images (ICONOS). With respect to the river attributes and adjacent lands, the riverside was divided into four heterogeneous zones. Then, to distinguish the most optimal zone based on the ecological values, the fuzzy decision making method was applied. To this end, the expansion of human activities and biophysical criteria were defined, separately. A number of experts determined the importance of each indicator qualitatively. Finally, using the group decision making theory and fuzzy TOPSIS technique, the researchers identified the most suitable zone based on the "biophysical criteria" and "human activity criteria" separately as well as the whole criteria, and provided suggestions on the landscape improvement. - Abstract
In the informal settlements of Indonesia the housing quality is of poor condition, but the community is strong. Especially the buildings that were build on the river banks are often in poor and dangerous condition. By introducing a new framework for building near the river, the overall quality of the kampong can be upgraded. The concept is to first introduce facility building near the river, funded by the community together with the government. These facilities improve hygiene conditions, such as clean washing and cooking areas. Besides offering facilities to the kampong, this building also gives new public space near the river in the sense of a walkway. Thus, making a new infrastructure on the Next Level. Then residents can add houses to the structure of the Next Level facility building being a part of the project. This is expected to increase the strength, the community and also the kampong as a whole. The project can grow incrementally land inwards if needed and wanted by the community. This is made possible by a modular and simple structure that can be assembled on the spot. Modularity follows the existing mind-set of the way of building in these settlements. Therefore, this can be made by the kampong residents themselves and makes it an affordable way of building., Shared Heritage Studio

- Abstract
This paper summarises the proposed physical planning and design in the poor area of Kampong Muharto, Malang City. As a community, the residents want to adjust their spatial setting to accommodate for social activities. This research lays out several options for their neighbourhood with consideration for the available space. The study area was analysed using the Strength-Weakness Opportunity-Threat (SWOT) method and it was found that there were two sections of the area in need of planning and design. The primary objective of this work is to figure out the spatial arrangement for the project with a direct understanding of the various needs of the housing facilities within the limitations of the land boundaries.

© 2019 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Publication rights licensed to ACM. Low power wide area networks (LPWAN) such as long range wide area networks (LoRaWAN), provide several advantages on monitoring systems development in forested environments due to its simple set-up, low cost, low power consumption, and wide coverage. Regarding the coverage area, the transmission in forested environments can be highly attenuated by foliage and must be defined to optimize the number of nodes. This paper discusses an empirical study of LoRa with LoRaWAN transmission range in riparian forests, based on path-loss modeling, using both received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR). The measurements have been conducted in the riparian forest of three local rivers at urban, semi-urban, and rural environments located in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. The measurement results found that there is a significant distribution difference among measurement places, a high correlation between two banks of the same river, a higher standard deviation in urban measurements and a larger coverage in rural areas.

In a post-industrial world one of the foci of urbanism has been on the regeneration of former industrial sites along urban rivers. This is a contemporary urban design issue that needs further attention, especially in relation to urban forms and design interventions. This paper sets out to contribute to research in design by reviewing past theories and practices in order to inform the formation of conceptual ideas. These are of importance to inform practice and ensure responsive and responsible processes in planning and design. Such a review has hitherto been lacking, but with a renewed interest in urban densification, research in the design of cities is required. Thus, this paper provides a critical assessment of theories, which are identified and categorised in relation to urban riverside regeneration. For this study, urban design is considered as a craft requiring ‘savoir faire’ to ensure the functionality and quality of urban spaces. Transferable principles and ideas are identified in relation to the specific characteristics of riverside locations contributing to the definition of a ‘riverside urbanity’. It provides a theoretical framework identifying types of riverside landscapes, including the relationship between urban forms and river corridors.

Abstract: This paper presents a cognitive analysis of semiotic representation registers, produced by the investigated students during a modeling activity. Due to the fact that the culture of açaí is a predominant practice in the region, this study addresses the sustainable management of the fruit in order to identify difficulties in the learning of the first degree polynomial function. The analyses also sought to investigate the critical-social understanding of students before their reality. The study counted on 24 students attending the 1st grade of a public modular high school located in a riverside community in the municipality of Muaná-Marajó in the state of Pará. It can be concluded that the reality in which the student is inserted influences positively their learning when it considers their previous knowledge, and enables them to be more participative and engaged in the proposed activities.

- Abstract
By considering regulations defined by laws, plans and decisions on different levels related to urban development of Belgrade riverside, specific conditions of privatization of land, changes in legislation and insufficiently defined planning procedures have been recognized, which reflect the informal practice of land use development. The example of such coastal areas can be found along the Sava and Danube riverside, including the illegal appropriation of the aquatory, which are regarded in this research as a specific practice of creating a unique cultural landscape. This practice reflects a spontaneous urban development of the riverside through the formal and informal establishment of temporary and permanent housing, numerous commercial and recreational activities in different scale along the 200km of Belgrade riverbank. The shaping of the cultural landscape of Belgrade riverside will be analyzed through the comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to the ongoing riverside urbanization, which manifest the complex linkage between formal institutions, and members of the local community. The importance of closer examination of cultural, economic, environmental and spatial aspects of this process is in the recognition of indigenous building regulations and relations to the natural resources. The main goal of the research is to understand different levels on which this informal practice persists and to outline the possibilities for the improvement of the current planning of Belgrade riverbank through their institutionalisation.

In this article, the author analyzes the encounter between the city and the river through some of the works of Jorge Luis Borges and Xul Solar, notably from the perspective of both artists’ “return” to Buenos Aires after their European experience, at the beginning of the 1920s. Responding with irony and lucidity to the premises of the local nationalisms and modernisms, Borges and Solar coincide, each one in his own way, in redefining the notion of “riverside”. From this dynamic displacement, each one builds his own character.

This article explores the stories of Juan José Saer and Enrique Wernicke. The Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB) site of Tell Halula in the middle Euphrates valley has yielded large quantities of cowrie shells used in the composition of belts and diadems. These shells were discovered in burials as complete items composing ornaments and in outdoor contexts as broken halves. In this paper we shed light on a little known PPNB ornamental practice; the acquisition and display of exotic cowrie shells. Through the multi-approached study of these ornaments, the objective is to contribute to the understanding of the socioeconomic, technological, and symbolic behaviors of the earliest farming societies in northern Mesopotamia and the Levant. Three species of cowries were identified, two originated from the Red Sea and one from the Mediterranean. The technological study indicated two possible methods of perforation and two qualities of finishing, whereas the use-wear analyses detected gradual degrees of marked use (notches) and distinguished thereby two categories of ornaments, the equally and unequally worn ornaments. When combined to metric and to technological data, the unequally worn ornaments appear to be the result of dynamic replacements of broken shells with undamaged ones. Such strategies of maintenances likely ensured a long-term use of cowrie ornaments, highlighting thereby their value. At Tell Halula, people displayed the impressive and exotic cowrie ornaments during their lifetime certainly to claim a strong cultural identity within an open and interconnected Neolithic world, in which the village of Tell Halula had a strategic and important role to play. This community may have also attributed prophylactic qualities to cowrie ornaments, as they were sometimes associated with individuals presenting lesions of diseases. Finally, the types of the ornament (belt or diadem) could have been chosen to distinguish social categories determined by the age of the individuals.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound and differential impacts on metropolitan areas across the United States and around the world. Within the United States, metropolitan areas that were hit earliest with the pandemic and reacted with scientifically based health policy were able to contain the virus by late spring. For other areas that kept businesses open, the first wave in the United States hit in mid-summer. As the weather turns colder, universities resume classes, and people tire of lockdowns, a second wave is ascending in both metropolitan and rural areas. It becomes more obvious that additional SARS-CoV-2 surveillance is needed at the local level to track recent shifts in the pandemic, rates of increase, and persistence. Objective: The goal of this study is to provide advanced surveillance metrics for COVID-19 transmission that account for speed, acceleration, jerk and persistence, and weekly shifts, to better understand and manage risk in metropolitan areas. Existing surveillance measures coupled with our dynamic metrics of transmission will inform health policy to control the COVID-19 pandemic until, and after, an effective vaccine is developed. Here, we provide values for novel indicators to measure COVID-19 transmission at the metropolitan area level. Methods: Using a longitudinal trend analysis study design, we extracted 260 days of COVID-19 data from public health registries. We used an empirical difference equation to measure the daily number of cases in the 25 largest US metropolitan areas as a function of the prior number of cases and weekly shift variables based on a dynamic panel data model that was estimated using the generalized method of moments approach by implementing the Arellano-Bond estimator in R. Results: Minneapolis and Chicago have the greatest average number of daily new positive results per standardized 100,000 population (which we refer to as speed). Extreme behavior in Minneapolis showed an increase in speed from 17 to 30 (67%) in 1 week. The jerk and acceleration calculated for these areas also showed extreme behavior. The dynamic panel data model shows that Minneapolis, Chicago, and Detroit have the largest persistence effects, meaning that new cases pertaining to a specific week are statistically attributable to new cases from the prior week. Conclusions: Three of the metropolitan areas with historically early and harsh winters have the highest persistence effects out of the top 25 most populous metropolitan areas in the United States at the beginning of their cold weather season. With these persistence effects, and with indoor activities becoming more popular as the weather gets colder, stringent COVID-19 regulations will be more important than ever to flatten the second wave of the pandemic. As colder weather grips more of the nation, southern metropolitan areas may also see large spikes in the number of cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explores the ways in which urban kampung communities deal with the sudden upsurge of large-scale to neighborhood-scale urban investments by the different government levels in Indonesia. This study examines the shift in livelihoods and utilization of space in urban kampungs in navigating these changes. The paper presents two urban kampungs from Pontianak, a medium-sized city in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The study finds a change in livelihood strategies and in the utilization of space after developments in infrastructure specifically targeted at the urban kampung. First, there is a significant shift in the informal economy toward tourism-based livelihoods. Second, the kampungs are spatially more connected and integrated. In addition, spaces in the kampungs have been developed for visitors and local residents to congregate. Third, the effects of urban investments on livelihoods and space utilization differ between the two kampungs because of illicit business in one of the kampungs. Finally, the research contributes to understanding how government-led spatial interventions influence informal activities and urban spaces, but urban informality can lead to unexpected consequences of government interventions due to location-specific attributes. Landscape plan is a designer instrument which offers harmonized spatial solutions on the basis of an integrated treatment of space. It enables the prevention of partial space interventions which are the consequence of establishing interests of sectoral planning. The proposal of a new Spatial Management Act (ZUreP-2) defines landscape plan as a mandatory expert groundwork for the production of a regional spatial plan and a municipal spatial plan. In its practical part, the master’s thesis tests the implementation of individual components of the landscape plan in a way, as defined by the above-mentioned act proposal. The selected test area encompasses broader water and riparian area of the river Drava in the hinterland of Ptuj, where conflicting interests with regards to the use of natural and artificial bodies of water emerge. The entire broader riparian area, which is recognized as a large potential for various activities due to the accumulation of the lake of Ptuj, stagnates developmentally. By means of a selected method which is based on four steps (analysis, evaluation, concept and landscape plan) using a gestalt treatment of space, a landscape plan, which deals with a delineated landscape area, created due to branching river dynamics of the river Drava, was produced. By means of defined environmental and developmental concept, plan of the arrangement of recreational and the other activities in the space, directives for broad riparian area management, and more thorough directives for narrow riparian belt of the lake at the small hydroelectric power plant Markovci, the proposed solution improves the possibilities for the development of the activities in space and the integral image of the area with regulated accessibility and transience to the existing and newly proposed points of the program. Based on the test case, it was proven, that landscape plan is an all-embracing spatial planning tool that deals with a wide range of spatial planning content, where methodology and potential integration with other spatial planning instruments can adapt to concrete planning task.

It is thought that the representative forms of health and disease that orientate the popular health practices go beyond the helath-patient professional relationship and are enrolled in the daily activities of the village, within a dynamic which envolves the consensual and the reified universes. It was adopted for the guidance of the study a psychosocial perspective, from the point of view of the Social Representations Theory (SRT), for it contributes to a broader approximation to social reality, promoting a dialogue between the different reified knowledges and the popular knowledge of the riverside dwellers and privileging the common sense produced on the group and the tacit knowledge of the daily health situation. It is a qualitative approach study with cross-sectional design, based on the SRT processual and structural approaches. The multimethodological strategy of the data collection combined four techniques for the identification of the different representation frames: participating systematic observation, survey, free association and semi-structured interview. The complementary use of different methodological strategies of data collection and analysis is intended to help in the best understanding of the social reality studied and evaluate the abilities, behaviors and relationships between the individuals and the context. The representations of health and disease of the riverside dwellers envolve distinct elements from the reified knowledge and the common sense, which are overlapped and alternated, and can be complementary on healthcare actions, depending on the itinerary made by the subject. Disease is seen as something localized in the body; care is associated to biomedical technology and health is opposed to disease; mystic-spiritual dimension is privileged in both representations, which converge to the popular health practices performed by the riverside social group and guide the subjects' choice on the search for the therapeutic itinerary to be gone through, under the official professional or folk knowledge, according to the needs, availabilities and wishes of the group. Both knowledge forms are present on the healthcare practices performed on these communities by the healthcare professionals, retranslating the official knowledge, and by the local knowledge specialists. Thus, the logic established upon the social representations of the group may include, simultaneously, going to the healthcare service and use allopathic medicines and self-blessing, using plants and teas, praying and turning to a witch doctor. These caring practices take part on a cultural trace of the group and form a set of norms and criteria included on the common sense knowledge which comprise, for example, the act of blessing and the use of homemade medicines as internalized actions on the communities, and demonstrate the identitary relation owned by the subjects through their beliefs, faith and religiosity, and the knowledge transmitted from the ancient ones and specially from close relatives, transgenerationally and between people from the same generation A investigação está centrada em apreender as representações sociais de saúde e doença e sua relação com as práticas de cuidados de saúde em três comunidades ribeirinhas do município de Porto Velho.

City of Osijek has developed along the right bank of the river Drava towards which the spatial and functional gravity of the city center is directed. The spatial and landscape features of the riversides are distinctly different to the purpose, development and organization with the negative sign of the left river bank. Currently, the role of the left bank is sport and recreation, with a swimming pool complex, an improvised city beach and basic corridors of communication that emphasize individual destinations, not creating a functional network of contents and typologically different communications. Considering the spatial and historical circumstances and by analyzing the broader and narrower areas with an emphasis on the development of existing characteristics and content, the spatial potentials for the development of the left bank are determined. The chosen vision of development has shaped guidelines for the design of the considered area with an emphasis on the landscape design of the Drava beach. The conceptualisation of the design guidelines proposed three variant conceptual designs with different approaches, which permeate the vision of the riverside development, creating a recognizable spatial identity of the left bank of the river Drava.

- Abstract
From 1910 to 1945, while the Korean peninsula was a protectorate- and eventual colony- of the Empire of Japan, Koreans in the United States began an arduous process to maintain their sense of identity in a new land, and struggled to have a voice in a society that rejected their race. As a people in diasporic exile, Korean Americans engaged in a collective war for their independence by gathering resources to liberate Korea and committing extraordinary effort to deconstruct contrived stereotypes of Koreans. There are a number of forms of primary sources that corroborate the major arguments of the thesis, including early Korean American- and American- newspaper reporting, first-hand testimonials, propaganda editorials, military and government documents, statements, and letters. This thesis was written in the early months of 2020, a time when Asian culture and acknowledgement of Asian American contributions was at its height, only to have it come crashing down to one of its lowest points. At the start of February, the South Korean thriller Parasite became the first foreign film to receive the Academy Award for “Best Picture”, and, just over a week later, California had issued its first official apology for its role in the internment of the Japanese. Then, almost as quickly as the successes came, an explosion of anti-Asian sentiment swept the globe in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Known as the “Yellow Peril”, the latent feelings of anger and discrimination erased any sense of ambiguous racism, effectively overturning decades of meticulously crafted progress by countless people. But this struggle is merely another battle in an endless war, as Korean Americans cope with the generalized and misdirected racism that the older generations had faced. However, as racism engenders hardships and a new need to validate themselves and their fidelity to American values, Korean Americans will demonstrate once again perseverance and sacrifice to bring a better future, just as they did during their war for independence.
