In the middle of the 19th century, the Zacatecas Literary Institute included some practices with a clear liberal influence; as a result, the students became integrated into political life and acted in accordance with the principles received; the professors, although not all members of freemasonry, taught to continue the liberal foundations. When secularized, the rituals of the old seminary were modified, so the students participated and acquired liberal protocols. Finally, the knowledge and rituals applied in the institution demonstrated the influence and presence of liberalism with changes in customs and uses with a clear Masonic presence.

This article ethnographically explores how the neobakala music scene creates ritual and carnivalesque practices to deal with the affective states produced by late capitalism in urban societies. To this end, this study takes as its point of reference the theoretical and methodological proposal of affectivity suggested by Alexandre Surrallés (2005). The article therefore explores the capitalist body and personhood, and identifies its affective states and identity discourses to see how these are projected and reflected. The paper also considers the contributions to the understanding of nostalgia made by Arjun Appadurai (2001) and Sinji Hirai (2009) and finally explores its relations with memory, revealing that, in this case, nostalgia seems to erode memory.

The loss of a loved one causes the world and the place of the bereaved survivor in it to change irreversibly. A key aspect of the grieving process is the integration of the loss in the bereaved survivor’s life story, identity change, and a new future orientation through meaning attribution. Meaning attribution can have favourable or unfavourable effects on the grieving process and hence determines the extent to which a loss disrupts the bereaved survivor’s functioning. A framework of meaning attribution after loss is presented, comprising 17 determinants that fall into five categories: event-related, cultural, social, individual and relational determinants. Each determinant may lead to both positive and negative meanings, thereby facilitating or complicating the grieving process. The framework of meaning attribution highlights the importance of an integrated network for mental health care, spiritual care, and end-of-life care in the prevention and treatment of traumatic grief. It also emphasizes the support from relatives, collective rituals, cultural views, legal settlements, and other societal factors that may foster or impede adaptation to loss. The framework of meaning attribution informs research across a range of research themes, including specialist care for traumatic grief, a culturally sensitive care network for traumatic grief, and improving care for ambiguous loss in a global context., HIGHLIGHTS: • Meaning attribution is an adaptive process that reduces the fear of the unknown.• Event-related, cultural, social, individual and relational determinants impact on meaning attribution following loss.• Research into meaning attribution is characterized by interdisciplinarity, methodological pluralism, and explicit orientation within the sociocultural context.

ABSTRACT In this article, I examine the recent emergence in Australia of two small, and now regularly enacted, rituals: 'Acknowledgments' and 'Welcomes to Country.' These are expressions of recognition, or response to perceived neglect and injustice. Recognition has become a global theme, part of a broader politics of reparation focused on indigenous and other colonized and subordinated peoples, and includes practices of apology and reconciliation. In Australia, recognition implies expansion the of relationship between categories of people who have been on unequal, distant, and (at some levels) negligible terms as settlers and natives, colonizers and colonized. Practices of recognition are therefore ambiguous: What is to be recognized, and how is recognition to proceed? Here I consider these rituals and their putative origins, structure, content, variations, and affect of participants and audiences. Both rituals cast recognition in ways that continue recent decades of national emphasis on indigenous emplacement, judgments concerning originariness, and authenticity; 'Welcomes' also recast relations in terms of a host-guest framework. The emergence of these rituals fosters new kinds of indigenous public expression and receptions of recognition as well as some standardization of both. It is an indication of change, as well as of its limits in indigenous-nonindigenous relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COLLECTIVE representation , *FORENSIC economics , *PROBATIONARY employees , *CULTURAL universals , *MENTAL representation , *SOCIAL groups , *MUNICIPAL services - Abstract
This paper proposes to identify the social representations constructed by forensic experts on probation, therefore standing at the marginal period of the rite of passage. The notion of rite that pervades the article is based on Turner (1974), Van Gennep (1978), DaMatta (1978, 1983), Rivière (1997), Segalen (2000) and Peirano (2003). It is defined as an extraordinary moment when values and knowledge are introduced to initiates in order to incorporate them into the cultural universe they are about to enter. Social representations constructed over this period will present peculiarities inherent to the position held by initiates. According to Sperber (2001), from an anthropological perspective social representations emerge from a composition articulated around the representation itself, its contents, a user and a producer (who might sometimes be the user himself or herself). Mental representations are those constructed inside the user. Public representations are mental representations shared among the members of a given group. Each member of a social group or community has an inner gamma of mental representations; when publicized, part of that knowledge or representations will be shared among the members of the group. Thus, subjects will construct their mental representations based on that first publicized. The ethnographic method made it possible to follow the initiates from the separation stage to the margin moment. Initiates were approached by participant and simple observation from May 2009 to June 2012. The representations that circulated in the liminal stage considered the work as: emotional distress, a positive value, interfering in family life, identified as CSI, positive and negative in the eyes of the police, black humour and lack of resources. It is worth to mention that humility and criticism with positive aspects were practiced, despite the initiates being newcomers to the public service. That confirms theorizing made by anthropologists to whom humility and moderation are the kind of behavior to be expected in the marginal stage of the rite of passage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research study aims to know how to integrate the use of the social network "WhatsApp" in the couple's bond. The participants were two dyads (or two couples) original from the city of Villavicencio. A qualitative methodology was used, deepening in the hermeneutic method, for this purpose, as a strategy, a conversational scenario was made, therefore, the results of the research are visible around the categories of analysis, such as: Communication Theory, Couple's Relationship and Bond. At the end of this process results like these were obtained: The social network "WhatsApp" is a facilitator to converse what people cannot communicate in person. On the other hand, the couples recognize that if an inadequate use of this application is made, it is very likely that the relationship will be affected, and at the same time, if certain limits and rules are taken into account, this tool will become an ally for the strengthening of this bond. Likewise, it is possible to recognize the formal schematizations in the participants' narratives which they weave around the use of the mobile device and WhatsApp, represented in the rituals as a time-space element. Abstract In this text we discuss, from indigenous worldviews and ritual practices, operated by the New Age movement, a learning experience that questions modern hegemonic knowledge. The reflection we make is empirically based on the ethnography performed in the Espaço Holístico Agora and in the Espaço Terra Zen, in New Age contexts, in the metropolitan region of the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. In the field observation work, we looked at the processes of intercultural learning, by white, schooled and middleclass subjects, about Amerindian shamanic practices, related to the use of power plants, and Maya traditions, associated with Sincronário da Paz. Based on ethnographic data, we analyze the conceptions of learning that are produced in that context, with emphasis on the idea of a care education, where mastery is distributed among human agents, who act as guardians and facilitators of knowledge, and no humans, like power plants. We call attention to the role of indigenous shamanic rituals, as mediators in learning.

This paper deals with the relationship between National Catholicism and the Official Falange Press in the province of Granada once the Spanish Civil War was over, in 1939. After the signs of iconoclasm and anticlericalism previous to the war, which had developed in some parts of the provincial territory, Franco’s regime, together with the Church, carried out a process of symbolic purification of the public space. This was done on the basis of exaltation of religious cult, through Eucharists and rituals such as processions and pilgrimages, as well as through worship of those fallen during the conflict. At the beginning of Franco’s regime, the press particularly connected with Falange would display the religious practices linked to celebrations of the end of the war.

- Abstract
This paper analyzes a ritual of cultural reprocessing in which different shapes of indigenous modernity and collective subjectivities converge, which are faced in a contentious space, marked by the commodification of culture. These are rituals that are performed in natural spaces of great beauty in the Nahua region of the Sierra de Zongolica, in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, which have attracted the growing arrival of local and regional tourism. The analysis focuses on the construction of community forms, promoted through the performance of rituals and ceremonies. The discussion is found in the different applications of the concept of communalism, and in the visions found that its management has aroused in anthropological studies. The framework is found in the multicultural policies of the neoliberal state and in the role of indigenous intellectuals in the creation and dissemination of imaginary and development of utopian communities, En este artículo presentamos un acercamiento a los rituales de xochitali, que se realizan cada primer viernes de marzo en poblaciones nahuas cercanas a la Sierra de Zongolica.

- Abstract
The research seeks to determine the influence between intangible cultural heritage and tourism development in the Colta canton, Chimborazo province. The cross-sectional correlational method was used and data collection was done through the application of surveys for both tourists and officials of public institutions involved in the field of heritage, instruments whose reliability was validated through the application of the Cronbach Alpha. The study determined through the application of Pearson's Chi-square method, that both the supply, management and conservation of intangible cultural heritage significantly influence the tourism development of the Colta canton. Based on these results, the creation of tourist packages focused on social uses, rituals and festive events of heritage, whose purpose allowed to take advantage of tourist mobility to share the ancestral knowledge of the sector, emerged as a proposal., Se determina la influencia existente entre el patrimonio cultural inmaterial en sus distintas facetas y el desarrollo turístico en el cantón Colta, en la provincia de Chimborazo.

- Abstract
The main objective of this work is to analyze the interpretations of the funerary rituals of Painé Güor and Calfucurá initiated by the archeologist Alberto Rex González, continued by the historian Raúl Mandrini and reviewed in part by the anthropologist Marta Bechis. In this context, both the evidence and the documentary absence of the murder of widows, which they call suttee or sati, is an indicator that accounts for the political organization of the indigenous peoples of the Pampas region. From qualitative and interpretive feminist epistemological and methodological perspectives we question the use of the suttee label because it has its origin in India and its knowledge cannot be separated from the English colonial interpretations, because there is no data that the widows wanted to die -it could justify it its use - and because it does not take into account the characteristics of the struggles for political power in these border areas., O objetivo principal deste trabalho é analisar as interpretações dos rituais funerários de Painé Guor e Calfucurá iniciados pelo arqueólogo Alberto Rex Gónzalez, continuado pelo historiador Raúl Mandrini e revisado em parte pela antropóloga Marta Bechis. - Abstract

- Abstract
In the longue durée perspective and in an American pan regional dimension, this article intends to analyze the «ball games» which are documented in archaeological and ethnohistorical studies and sources about the Americas, starting in Mesoamerica, throughout the Andean region, up to the lowlands of South America to focus the social continuities and ruptures observed from the «game» as its lens. The physical and socio-political structures as well as the materialities of the «ball games» will be analyzed. An anthropological reading of the sources will be offered. Focusing the continuities and the ruptures in different pre-Spanish, colonial and independent societies of the Americas up to the present, it will be determined, that the «game» cannot be understood only as a game, but as being embedded within a whole continuum of sports, war, and human sacrifice. By this way of analysis, it will be possible to understand the societies of the past better, which were structured, among others, by gender relationships, connecting them to the present., En la perspectiva de la longue durée y en una dimensión americana panregional, este artículo pretende analizar los «juegos de pelota» documentados en los estudios y las fuentes arqueo lógicas y etnohistóricas. - Abstract
Our communication seeks to understand the influence of ancient healing rituals on mental health. We understand mental health as the welfare state that results from the balance between the person and their environment: social, emotional and cultural. This research focuses on the healing rituals with entheogenic substances practiced by the yachag or healers of the Saraguro nationality. The Saraguro nationality belongs to the 14 ethnic groups and indigenous nationalities identified in Ecuador. It is characterized by the secrecy between ancient wisdom and the Western Catholic religion. They understand the physical and spiritual individual as a unit, physical healing begins with the spirit, with the energy of life. For the yachag the mother plant is the aguacoya or san pedro. Healing with aguacoya is performed with a ritual that lasts one night. The effects produced by the consumption of the plant are: physiological, visions and sensorial and affective disinhibition. From the studies of personality and mental health, we have set out to analyze the relationship of the individual with the healing and healing processes. We take Erikson’s hierarchical stages as a theoretical reference, from which the development of life is proposed in eight stages that face social realities in function of the Ego. We participated for two years in ritual sanctions with aguacoya, observing the process of personal change of 27 randomly selected participants. We analyze the influence of ritual, integrating the levels: somatic, psychic and social-ethical; understanding these levels in relation to Erikson from the unresolved conflicts in each of the stages of life. There is a psychological typology that predisposes individuals to participate in rituals and a series of personality traits that influence the individual to find healing by overcoming unresolved conflicts through ritual.

- Abstract
The ritual killing of humans in the ancient Near East has received increased attention in recent years. Material evidence for the practice is commonly interpreted in terms of theories of ritual and sacrifice developed by prominent scholars of comparative religion during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Typical interpretive models include communication and communion with supernatural beings and gift exchange as a social and political tool. This article provides a brief overview of these recent trends in the study of human sacrifice in the ancient Near East before turning to George Bataille’s views of the practice in the context of his theories of general economy and religion. It is argued that his notions of expenditure and transgression serve as useful tools for the interpretation of several instances of anthropoctony in the ancient Near East., Resumen: La matanza ritual de seres humanos en el Cercano Oriente antiguo ha recibido mayor atención en los últimos años.

- Abstract
El presente paper busca mostrar de qué manera y en qué condiciones uno y otro son movilizados para intentar resolver un conjunto de tensiones conflictivas en un intento por lograr consenso identitario, social y moral a través de dispositivos rituales., Public commemorations in the main settlements of the district of Punta Indio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) are built around two core repertoires: the military, related to the presence in the area of the oldest navy airfield in the region, and the “tradicionalista”, linked to the purported “rural” and “gaucho” traits of the Pampas. Both of them occupy a prominent place in the public presentation these settlements and its inhabitants make about themselves. Ethnographic evidence shows, however, that their effective deployment is fraught with tensions as well as specific attempts to deal with them, that make their presence felt in each and every public event. The following paper intends to show in which way and under which conditions these repertoires are mobilized in order to solve a set of conflictive tensions in an attempt to obtain identity, social and moral consensus through ritual devices.

Some theories suggest that collective emotions, in particular emotional entrainment as the feeling of affective attunement with others during rituals, can increase the identification with a social group. Furthermore, emotional entrainment is supposed to emotionally ‘charge’ group symbols that are part of ritual practices and influence group-related attitudes and solidarity even beyond the ritual context. This article tests these assumptions in a naturalistic study around the 2010 Football World Cup, which reliably generates emotional entrainment in a ritualized, nation-focused context. Results indicate that emotional entrainment during the tournament is a predictor of changes in national identification and the perceived emotional significance of national symbols after the tournament. Moreover, emotional entrainment partially mediates the relationship between pre- and post-World Cup national identification and the perception of national symbols. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
The article falls within the field of religious theater studies, and more specifically the religious theater of mourning. In this respect, the article examines and contrasts two theatrical forms developed into two different world cultures, that is the Judeo-Christian culture on the one hand and the Muslim world on the other. In this intercultural context and using analytical and comparative approaches, the study focuses on the representation of the Passion of Christ and the representation of the martyrdom of Hussein, known as "Ta'ziya" which is an essential part of the tradition and Shia doctrine in Islam. The contrastive analysis of these two forms of religious drama touches on issues of historical and anthropological order, in addition to cultural, religious and literary ones in order to better explain what is common and what is different in these two current ritualized dramatic manifestations and to go deeply into their analogous socio-religious function. Throughout the XVIII century, in diverse cathedrals of New Spain the problem of rituals established for the vice-patrons was stated, particularly in the solemnities of Holy Thursday. This topic which was addressed indirectly and ambiguously by civil legislation, the bourbon reformers decided not to establish fixed rules for it, and therefore it was greatly influenced by diverse local customs. So practices were introduced such as the demonstration of the Eucharist before its deposit or returning the key of the tabernacle to the vice-patrons. The bishops of the time, although they were faithful servants of the Crown, tried to limit when possible her intervention in some ceremonies that they considered sacred. This is how the ceremonies inherited by the first republican governments were created. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the most important popular religious cults in the City of Puebla is that of the Señor de las Maravillas (Lord of Marvels), who is venerated at the church of Santa Mónica in the historic downtown area of the city. In this text, we will present historic and ethnographic aspects of the religious practices related to this devotion, which range from pilgrimages, processions, a variety of prayers of thanks and petition, to ritual practices including magical elements, such as the "cleansings." All these popular religious expressions take place in an urban context and constitute an expression of the currency of religiosity in a secularized and globalized world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a city with deep roots in the colonial era, the sense of time and its impact on the daily lives of its inhabitants is anchored firmly on a pace set by the calendar, as an order of time. In the present-day city of San Luis Potosi, the ritual use of the calendar is a feature inherited from the days when the town was under Spanish rule and was organized in a Hispanic center and a periphery formed by the towns and neighborhoods of Indians and people of mixed blood. The purpose of this article is to examine the cultural uses of the calendar in the colonial city of San Luis Potosi. We start from the assumption that an almanac is understood as a tool for perceiving time, but also for influencing everyday life, which allows us to understand the society that uses it as a whole. The purpose of this paper is to bring together the perspectives of anthropology, photography and the subject being photographed, as a theoretical contribution and a methodological invitation, with the scope of understanding how we anthropologists understands the other, how the other perceives that understanding, how we are observed by the other, and how we perceive its understanding of us. Based on Roy Wagner's contributions, the act of photography is presented as a moment of invention, that is, as the moment in which the contexts that are captured and made objective in the image extend. Two photographic exhibitions will thus be analysed, based on such contributions. They were carried out in the town of Alfajayucán, Hidalgo (Mexico), within the ñáhñu indigenous communities in El Espíritu and San Antonio Corrales, during the months of May and June 2008, respectively. And they focus on the experiences resulting from a project on the view of the photographer-anthropologist and that of the ñáhñu participants, during an anthropological investigation on cosmovision and ritual specialists. Ritual use of peyote among Huichols and Tarahumara peoples has been documented from the late xxi Century onwards. However, the resulting image of these ethnographies seem to lead to irreducible differences. In this article we analyse in a comparative form the relationship between this entheogen, the above mentioned peoples' worldview, and specifically with the concept of "regeneration of life". Tinkuys, often termed “ritual battles,” are events of hand-to-hand fighting that occur during Catholic feast days in some parts of the Bolivian and Peruvian Andes. Although their representations do not often circulate widely, tinkuy fighters tell stories of their experiences long after the battle is over. Drawing on a narrative told by a self-described tinkuy champion, the article demonstrates that individuals may make complicated claims to subjectivity that imbricate race, gender, ethnicity, and citizenship in their stories. In contemporary Bolivia tinkuy is closely associated with racialized discourses of indianness and violence, yet fighters who narrate their experiences may mobilize multiple associations—with the Spanish and the nation as well as with the ayllu—and may negotiate belonging to diverse communities. Attention to the nonreferential, as well as to the referential, content of this fighter's narrative illuminates the mechanisms through which an individual may constitute self in interaction. Considering the ways narratives of Andean ritual violence may be used to claim hegemonic masculinity and citizenship challenges the categorical distinctions between indian and white and suggests potential avenues for further research on tinkuy as a living practice. This exploratory study explains from an ethnographic perspective the rituals that neighborhood's shopkeepers have promoted in the family niche and in their business area of influence. During the research development we applied ethnographic and ethnological methods. 24 in-depth interviews were applied with shopkeepers of Barranquilla and Neiva; 20 hours of participant and non-participant observation were spent and different documents were analyzed. The rituals proposal resulting from the theoretical review and the obtained categories, indicates that actions of the shopkeepers are determined by an accepted and shared cultural environment. They use two types of rituals related with the: 1. Annual time: passages, "agüeristas", integration. 2. Particular intention: Prayer, possession, spoliation of meaning, personal arrangement, perception of oneself, investment in objects and of extension for more with integration the community where they deliver their services. This article studies the circulation, appropriation, and commercial and symbolic uses of objects in colonial society, suggesting ways to understand the circulation of objects and commodities through the spaces of the New Kingdom of Granada. It tries to specify the functions played by objects in domestic life and, based on their circulation, to weave together the communications they established between Cities, towns, and settlements and the centers of power in Antioquia and the Viceroyalty during the eighteenth century. By going behind the historicity of the objects, the marks they made and their creation, we can better understand the dimensions of their routes, circuits, and nodes as a substantial part of the culture and the relations of interdependence with other societies.
