Facial nerve paralysis associated with parotid gland mass is usually caused by malignant neoplasms and facial nerve dysfunction due to parotid infection is exceedingly rare. A review of the literature revealed ≈ 15 cases of facial nerve palsy associated with suppurative parotitis or parotid abscess. We report the first case of candidal abscess of the parotid gland associated with facial nerve paralysis in a 74-year-old insulin-dependent diabetic patient. Abstract: Dilute acid hydrolysis of lignocellulose often requires a neutralisation step to utilise the hydrolysate's sugars. In this context, very little is known regarding the impact of low levels of acids or their corresponding salts produced by neutralisation on the catalyst performance in the hydrogenation of sugars. In this work, the influence of a series of ammonium and alkali metal salts (that is, NH4NO3, NaNO3, (NH4)2SO4, Na2SO4 and K2SO4) on the hydrogenation of glucose and xylose is addressed. This study also encompasses “real‐world” hydrolysates obtained by the mechanocatalytic depolymerisation of α‐cellulose and beechwood. The impact of low levels of acids and their salts upon the hydrogenation of sugars to sugar alcohols (alditols) was examined, in the presence of a commercial Ru/C catalyst (Ru/C, 0.7 wt % Ru) at 110 °C using batch and trickle‐bed reactors. The results show that the presence of salts leads to a considerable decrease in the alditols yields. Notably, salt anions exert an effect stronger than that of cations in the catalyst deactivation. Surprisingly, nitrates had a more significant effect on the decrease in the alditols yield than sulfates, and chlorides had the lowest impact. In this study, we also present the effect of sugars’ degradation products (e.g. 5‐(hydroxymethyl)furfural and furfural) upon hydrogenation of lignocellulose hydrolysates. The activated carbon pre‐treatments of the hydrolysates showed a positive effect on the catalyst activity, adsorbing hydrolysis by‐products. Overall, this study has significant implications for the practical aspects of hydrogenation of lignocellulose hydrolysates, which are often neglected in the current literature. Mechanocatalysis is an efficient method for deep depolymerization of lignocellulosic materials. It renders full conversion of lignocellulose into water-soluble products, a mixture of oligosaccharides and lignin oligomers. In an aqueous monophasic system, it is known that further saccharification of these products affords high yields of fermentable sugars in addition to a lignin precipitate. Although much attention has been devoted to upgrading of the carbohydrate fraction, the reactivity of mechanocatalytically-isolated lignin has hitherto been overlooked. In this report, we demonstrate the saccharification of water-soluble lignocellulose in a biphasic mixture of water and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, to prevent lignin fragments from recondensation, not only with other lignin fragments but also with oligosaccharides and their degradation products. The lignin stream extracted in the biphasic system exhibits a molecular weight much lower than that of the lignin precipitate obtained from monophasic aqueous saccharification, and that of lignin isolated by an Organosolv process with no added acid catalyst. Surprisingly, β-O-4 and phenylcoumaran (β-5 + α-O-4) linkages are quantitatively hydrolyzed during saccharification in the biphasic system. However, the extracted lignin still incorporates resinol bonding motifs (β-β + γ-O-α). Because of the lower molecular weight, low carbohydrate content, and high solubility in organic solvents, the catalytic downstream processing of the extracted lignin leads to higher yields of liquid products (e.g. 2-methoxyphenols and 2,6-dimethoxyphenols) by RANEY® Ni-catalyzed hydrogenolysis (200 °C, 7 MPa H2), compared to reactions performed on the lignin precipitate or Organosolv lignin. Background APV102002 was an open-label study comparing a dual-boosted HIV-1 protease inhibitor (PI) [fosamprenavir/lopinavir/ritonavir (FPV/LPV/RTV; 1400 mg/533 mg/133 mg twice daily)] and a high dose of FPV/RTV 1400 mg/100 mg twice daily (HD-FPV/RTV) versus the standard FPV/RTV 700 mg/100 mg twice-daily (STD-FPV/RTV) regimen for 24 weeks. Methods Adult patients with prior failure to two or more PI-based regimens and on a failing PI regimen were randomized to STD-FPV/RTV (n = 24), HD-FPV/RTV (n = 25) or FPV/LPV/RTV (n = 25). The primary aim was to test week 24 superiority of HD-FPV/RTV and FPV/LPV/RTV over STD-FPV/RTV as measured by plasma HIV-1 RNA average area under the curve minus baseline (AAUCMB). Results There was no difference in the week 24 AAUCMB between the regimens. The proportion of patients with Cτ) was 49% higher in the HD-FPV/RTV arm than in the STD-FPV/RTV arm and similar in the FPV/LPV/RTV and STD-FPV/RTV arms. The plasma lopinavir Cτ was similar to historical data with standard LPV/RTV 400 mg/100 mg twice daily. All regimens were relatively well tolerated, although diarrhoea was more frequent in the HD-FPV/RTV and FPV/LPV/RTV arms, and hypertriglyceridaemia and increased total cholesterol were more common in the FPV/LPV/RTV arm. Conclusions While the strategies of higher dose FPV/RTV and dual FPV/LPV/RTV were relevant at the time of study initiation, new therapies for antiretroviral-experienced patients make such strategies of limited interest. In addition, this study failed to demonstrate antiviral superiority of the HD-FPV/RTV or FPV/LPV/RTV regimen over the STD-FPV/RTV twice-daily regimen in highly treatment-experienced patients. Metal dispersion is key for designing highly active and well-defined catalytic systems. Herein, to shed light on the effects of Nb dispersion on the conversion of fructose into HMF, highly porous silica glasses grafted with niobium oxide were prepared. Preliminary catalytic screening was done for the microwave-assisted conversion of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in a biphasic system. The highly porous silica glasses impregnated with niobium oxide presented HMF productivities about 10- to 20 times higher than the mesoporous NbOPO 4 reference material. Intriguingly, humin formation correlates with HMF yield regardless of the catalyst employed, although metal dispersion influences the acidity profile. The objective of this study was to assess the progression of atherosclerosis in carotid and femoral arteries after a 5-year period using ultrasound in subjects with chronic hepatitis C and in controls matched for classic atherosclerotic risk factors. A total of 40 patients and 40 controls were assessed by echocolor Doppler in 2001 and in 2006 to evaluate plaque and intima-media thickness. The patients showed no changes in plaque and intima-media thickness during the 5-year period in all districts examined, whereas a significant increase in intima-media thickness in the carotid sections was recorded in the controls. This study presents an integrated approach combining aqueous phase reforming (APR) and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) for the hydrotreatment of guaiacol, a model compound representing lignin-derived phenols in pyrolysis bio-oils. The APR process enables in-situ H 2 generation, eliminating the need for an external hydrogen source. We examine the interplay between metal species, the Pt-promoting effect on Ni–Pt catalyst supported on activated carbon (AC), and the choice of hydrogen source (methanol or glycerol). Amongst the monometallic catalysts, a 1% Pt/AC catalyst notably achieved over 96% guaiacol conversion at 300 °C with either hydrogen source. Interestingly, when 0.5–1% of the Ni loading is replaced with Pt, the resulting bimetallic Ni–Pt/AC catalysts demonstrate a significant improvement in guaiacol conversion, reaching 70% when methanol is employed as the hydrogen source. Surprisingly, no comparable enhancement in guaiacol conversion is observed when employing glycerol as the hydrogen source. This observation underlines one of the pivotal effects of the hydrogen source on catalyst performance. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) pinpointed strong Ni–Pt interactions in the catalyst. It also revealed distinctive electronic features of Ni–Pt/AC, which are favourable for steering selectivity towards cyclohexanol rather than phenol when Pt loading is increased from 0.5 to 1%. Moreover, Pt enhanced catalyst stability by inhibiting the oxidation of Ni sites and mitigating Ni–Pt phase sintering. Overall, our findings offer important insights into integrating APR and HDO processes, the promotion effect of Pt, and the importance of hydrogen source selection in terms of guaiacol conversion and catalyst stability. Difficulties in the recycling of soluble acid catalysts within the lignocellulosic biorefinery constitute a serious issue to the sustainability of cellulose hydrolysis and several other transformations. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and effective method for the removal and recovery of p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TSA) employed as a replacement of H2SO4 in the saccharification of cellulose by a mechanocatalytic route. p-TSA is recovered from its diluted aqueous solutions using a non-expensive hypercrosslinked polymer adsorbent. In a batch process, around 97% p-TSA acid was removed from a 5 mM solution after exposure to the hypercrosslinked polymer. Notably, a flow-through process was able to selectively remove the catalyst completely from even lower initial concentrations. Importantly, the efficient recovery of the p-TSA is achieved by washing the spent polymer with methanol. In the purification of a stream derived from the saccharification of cellulose, the extraction of p-TSA catalyst in addition to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural was also achieved. With the rational choice of solvents, p-TSA and furfurals were separately recovered. In the broader context, the current findings represent a step forward towards the acid management from the acid-catalyzed saccharification of cellulose. Moreover, this approach is conducive for the purification of sugars for bioconversion in which even low levels of furfurals may exert a strong inhibitory effect upon yeast cultures. In the broad context of catalysis for lignin valorization, the term "recalcitrance" is often used to describe the resistance of lignin to undergo chemical transformations (generally, reductive processes) rendering small molecules soluble in the reaction medium. Unfortunately, the current usage of the term "recalcitrance" often remains vague in meaning, hindering the search for better catalysts for lignin valorization. In the quest to address the research question--What is lignin recalcitrance?-- we present our search for the factors responsible for the resistance of lignin to reductive catalytic processes, from various perspectives. In this study, lignins isolated as a precipitate obtained from the saccharification of water-soluble lignocelluloses (produced by solvent-free mechanocatalytic depolymerization of beechwood, pinewood, or sugarcane bagasse) and their counterparts isolated by solvent extraction (organosolv pulping) are investigated. The critical analysis of structure and bonding, in addition to the in-depth understanding of results from the catalytic upgrading of lignin streams, in the presence of Raney Ni and H2 pressure under mild and extreme conditions, reveals that the simple evaluation of the total yield of liquid products provides no quantitative measure of the lignin recalcitrance. Our results shed light on the real meaning, origins and implications of "lignin recalcitrance" for catalysis research. The results demonstrate that lignin recalcitrance is associated not only with its intrinsic properties (i.e. molecular weight, the occurrence of native linkages, and their bond dissociation enthalpies) but also with its extrinsic properties (e.g. residual polysaccharides and solubility). Overall, this study presents a detailed evaluation of recalcitrance of lignin through the critical analysis of the product mixture properties (e.g. H/C and O/C ratios, molecular weight distribution, yield of key individual products, and several others). There are several established approaches for the reductive fractionationof lignocellulose (e.g., “catalytic upstream biorefining" and “lignin-first" approaches) that lead to a lignin oil product that is composed primarily of dihydro-p-monolignols [e.g., 4-(3-hydroxypropyl)-2-methoxyphenol and 4-(3-hydroxypropyl)- 2,6-dimethoxyphenol]. Although effective catalytic methods have been developed to perform reductive or deoxygenativeprocesses on the lignin oil, the influence of the 3-hydroxypropylsubstituent on catalyst activity has previously beenoverlooked. Herein, to better understand the reactivity of thedepolymerized lignin oil obtained from catalytic upstream biorefiningprocesses, dihydro-p-coumaryl alcohol was selected asa model compound. Hydrogenation of this species in the presenceof Raney Ni with molecular hydrogen led to ring saturation(100% selectivity) in the absence of hydrodeoxygenation,whereas under hydrogen-transfer conditions with 2-propanol,hydrogenation occurred (&55% selectivity) simultaneouslywith hydrodeoxygenation (&40% selectivity). A simple and efficient hydrodeoxygenation strategy is described to selectively generate and separate high-value alkylphenols from pyrolysis bio-oil, produced directly from lignocellulosic biomass. The overall process is efficient and only requires low pressures of hydrogen gas (5 bar). Initially, an investigation using model compounds indicates that MoC x/C is a promising catalyst for targeted hydrodeoxygenation, enabling selective retention of the desired Ar−OH substituents. By applying this procedure to pyrolysis bio-oil, the primary products (phenol/4-alkylphenols and hydrocarbons) are easily separable from each other by short-path column chromatography, serving as potential valuable feedstocks for industry. Hyperimmunoglobulin treatment for women with early (before gestational week 17) primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and proven vertical transmission (ie, detection of CMV in amniotic fluid by polymerase chain reaction) improved infant outcomes at 1 year of age.Background. Primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy is the leading infectious cause of congenital neurological disabilities. Early CMV infection carries a higher risk of adverse neonatal outcome (sensorineural hearing loss or neurological deficits). Intravenous hyperimmunoglobulin (HIG) therapy seems to be promising, but its efficacy needs further investigation.Methods. Since 2002, we have enrolled consecutively all pregnant women with early (ie, before gestational week 17) CMV infection. Beginning in 2007, all women were offered treatment with HIG (200 UI per kilogram of maternal weight, in a single intravenous administration). Outcome of infants was evaluated at the age of 1 year.Results. Of the 592 women with early primary CMV infection, amniocentesis for CMV DNA detection was performed for 446. Of the 92 CMV-positive fetuses, pregnancy was terminated for 24, HIG was administered to mothers of 31, and no treatment was received by mothers of 37. Fetuses of treated mothers did not differ from fetuses of nontreated mothers according to mother's age, gestational week of infection, CMV load, or detection of abnormal ultrasonography findings. At the 1-year evaluation, 4 of 31 infants with treated mothers (13%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1%–25%) and 16 of 37 infants with nontreated mothers (43%; 95% CI, 27%–59%) presented with poor outcomes (P < .01, by the 2-tailed Fisher exact test).Conclusions. Advances in applied developmental science have contributed to the large literature on positive youth development (PYD) interventions. This study reports an investigation of a PYD program using an outcome-mediation evaluation model that drew on the treatment intervention science literature. The Changing Lives Program (CLP) is a community supported gender and ethnic inclusive PYD intervention framework. Using an empowerment approach, the CLP was implemented in a practice setting as a selective/indicated positive youth development program for multi-ethnic, multi-problem at risk youth in urban alternative high schools. The outcome-mediation evaluation model provided evidence in support of the direct outcome effects of the intervention. The model also proved effective in identifying at a micro process level a number of plausible causal mechanisms for use in the development of more conceptually complete models of the causal mechanisms that underlie intervention change. Town centre management (TCM) has evolved considerably over the last 25 years in terms of both its purpose and methods. Whilst most reviews of TCM to date have focused on its development within the Anglo-Saxon world (typically North America and the United Kingdom), comparatively little attention has been given to other models of place and town centre management that have emerged across Europe. This paper seeks to redress the balance by exploring the relevance of other models from a number of European countries, which were researched using a case study approach and conceptualised within a framework which seeks to classify TCM schemes by their funding sources and structural formality. It is argued that, despite their lower budgets or lack of formal recognition, other models of TCM such as informal place management schemes or hybrids of formal and informal TCM schemes can often be just as effective in delivering positive outcomes for urban communities. Abstract: Alumina catalyzes the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone, using 70wt.% aqueous or anhydrous hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. The best methodology was to carry out the reaction in ethyl acetate under azeotropic water removal at 90°C, and a molar ratio cyclohexanone:oxidant of 1:4. Under these conditions, the conversion was 53% with a selectivity of 98% for ɛ-caprolactone. The weak and strong acid sites of alumina were correlated with the substrate conversion and hydrogen peroxide consumption for the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation. It is shown that the weak acid sites, which activate hydrogen peroxide for the catalytic epoxidation of nucleophilic olefins, are also responsible for the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation. Stronger acid sites, however, also participate in the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation, by activation of the carbonyl group. The interaction of the carbonyl group with strong acid sites also reduces the hydrogen peroxide decomposition. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The selectivity of the alumina catalyzed epoxidation of (S)-limonene, citronelal, citral, citronelol and (1S)-(α)-pinene with aqueous 70wt% and anhydrous 24wt% hydrogen peroxide is described. DFT molecular orbital calculations were used aiming at a better understanding of the reactivity of these terpenes. The more nucleophilic carbon–carbon double bond, which has a higher molecular orbital energy, is preferentially epoxidized (site-selectivity). Furthermore, a preference for epoxidation in competition with other possible reactions is observed for citronelal, citral, citronelol and (1S)-(α)-pinene (chemo-selectivity). Nonetheless, we were not able to achieve a stereo-selective epoxidation of the terpenes using alumina and hydrogen peroxide. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Background: The epidemiological pattern of hepatitis B virus infection in Italy has greatly changed over the past decades. The aim of the study was to evaluate during time the epidemiological features of acute hepatitis B cases referred to an Infectious Disease Unit in North-East of Italy between 1978 and 1995. Patients and methods: Stored sera of 183 cases were tested for HBV markers, HBV genotypes, anti-Delta and anti-HCV. Results: Anti-HBcIgM was positive in all cases. Mean age increased from 30.2years in 1978 to 37.5 in 1995 (P<0.01). Significant increase was observed in proportion of cases reporting intravenous drug use from 11.5% to 29.6% (P<0.03). Chronicity rate was as low as 1.1%. Mean days of hospitalization significantly decreased. HBV genotype determination showed that majority of cases was infected by genotype D, but its prevalence decreased from 88.2% in 1978 to 75.0% in 1995. Delta coinfection was present in 8.2%. The prevalence of HCV in patients with acute HBV was 35.0%; it fluctuated from 26.2% to 44.2%, mostly related (53.1%) to intravenous drug use. Dual infection did not lead to a more severe course of disease. Conclusions: From this retrospective study, remarkable fluctuations in the prevalence of dual HBV–HCV infection before the implementation of HBV vaccination were observed. Background: In patients with multi-vessel disease presenting with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the efficacy and safety of ischemia-guided, vs routine non-culprit vessel angioplasty has not been adequately studied., Methods: We conducted an international, randomized, non-inferiority trial comparing ischemia-guided non-culprit vessel angioplasty to routine non-culprit vessel angioplasty, following primary PCI for STEMI. The primary outcome was the between-group difference in percent ischemic myocardium at follow-up stress MPI. All MPI images were processed and analyzed at a central core lab, blinded to treatment allocation., Results: In all, 109 patients were enrolled from nine countries. In the ischemia-guided arm, 25/48 (47%) patients underwent non-culprit vessel PCI following stress MPI. In the routine non-culprit PCI arm, 43/56 (77%) patients underwent angioplasty (86% within 6 weeks of randomization). The median percentage of ischemic myocardium on follow-up imaging (mean 16.5 months) was low, and identical (2.9%) in both arms (difference 0.13%, 95%CI - 1.3%-1.6%, P < .0001; non-inferiority margin 5%)., Conclusion: A strategy of ischemia-guided non-culprit PCI resulted in low ischemia burden, and was non-inferior to a strategy of routine non-culprit vessel PCI in reducing ischemia burden. Reductive Catalytic Fractionation (RCF) of lignocellulosic materials produces lignin oil rich in monomer products and high-quality cellulosic pulps. RCF lignin oil also contains lignin oligomers/polymers and hemicellulose-derived carbohydrates. The variety of components makes lignin oil a complex matrix for analytical methods. As a result, the signals are often convoluted and overlapped, making detecting and quantifying key intermediates challenging. Therefore, to investigate the mechanisms underlining lignin stabilization and elucidate the structural features of carbohydrates occurring in the RCF lignin oil, fractionation methods reducing the RCF lignin oil complexity are required. This report examines the solvent fractionation of RCF lignin oil as a facile method for producing lignin oil fractions for advanced characterization. Solvent fractionation uses small volumes of environmentally benign solvents (methanol, acetone, and ethyl acetate) to produce multigram lignin fractions comprising products in different molecular weight ranges. This feature allows the determination of structural heterogeneity across the entire molecular weight distribution of the RCF lignin oil by high-resolution HSQC NMR spectroscopy. Mechanochemistry utilizes mechanical forces to activate chemical bonds. It offers environmentally benign routes for both (bio) organic and inorganic syntheses. However, direct comparison of mechanochemistry results is often very challenging. In mechanochemical synthetic protocols, ball mill setup (mechanical design and grinding vessel geometry) in addition to experimental parameters (milling frequency, duration, ball count and size) vary broadly. This fact poses a severe issue to further progress in this exciting research area because ball mill setup and experimental parameters govern how much kinetic energy is transferred to a chemical reaction. In this work, we address the challenge of comparing mechanochemical reaction results by taking the energy dose provided by ball mills as a unified metric into account. In this quest, we applied kinematic modeling to two ball mills functioning under distinct working principles to express the energy dose as a mathematical function of the experimental parameters. By examining the effect of energy dose on the extent of the mechanocatalytic depolymerization (MCD) of lignocellulosic biomass (beechwood), we found linear correlations between yield of water-soluble products (WSP) and energy dose for both ball mills. Interestingly, when a substrate layer is formed on the grinding jar wall and/or grinding medium, a weak non-linear correlation between water-soluble products yield and energy dose is identified. We demonstrate that the chemical reaction's best utilization of kinetic energy is achieved in the linear regime, which presents improved WSP yields for given energy doses. Reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) is a promising approach to fractionate lignocellulose and convert lignin to a narrow product slate. To guide research towards commercialization, cost and sustainability must be considered. Here we report a techno-economic analysis (TEA), life cycle assessment (LCA), and air emission analysis of the RCF process, wherein biomass carbohydrates are converted to ethanol and the RCF oil is the lignin-derived product. The base-case process, using a feedstock supply of 2000 dry metric tons per day, methanol as a solvent, and H 2 gas as a hydrogen source, predicts a minimum selling price (MSP) of crude RCF oil of $1.13 per kg when ethanol is sold at $2.50 per gallon of gasoline-equivalent ($0.66 per liter of gasoline-equivalent). We estimate that the RCF process accounts for 57% of biorefinery installed capital costs, 77% of positive life cycle global warming potential (GWP) (excluding carbon uptake), and 43% of positive cumulative energy demand (CED). Of $563.7 MM total installed capital costs, the RCF area accounts for $323.5 MM, driven by high-pressure reactors. Solvent recycle and water removal via distillation incur a process heat demand equivalent to 73% of the biomass energy content, and accounts for 35% of total operating costs. In contrast, H 2 cost and catalyst recycle are relatively minor contributors to operating costs and environmental impacts. In the carbohydrate-rich pulps, polysaccharide retention is predicted not to substantially affect the RCF oil MSP. Analysis of cases using different solvents and hemicellulose as an in situ hydrogen donor reveals that reducing reactor pressure and the use of low vapor pressure solvents could reduce both capital costs and environmental impacts. Processes that reduce the energy demand for solvent separation also improve GWP, CED, and air emissions. Additionally, despite requiring natural gas imports, converting lignin as a biorefinery co-product could significantly reduce non-greenhouse gas air emissions compared to burning lignin. Overall, this study suggests that research should prioritize ways to lower RCF operating pressure to reduce capital expenses associated with high-pressure reactors, minimize solvent loading to reduce reactor size and energy required for solvent recovery, implement condensed-phase separations for solvent recovery, and utilize the entirety of RCF oil to maximize value-added product revenues., Competing Interests: None to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Objectives: High-dose CT (HDCT) is considered the gold-standard imaging for the measurements of skeletal muscle area (SMA), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) areas in the abdomen. These parameters may reflect sarcopenia, which can have a prognostic impact in several oncological diseases. The aim of this study was to compare the agreement of measurements of SMA, VAT, SAT and IMAT areas between HDCT and low-dose CT (LDCT) of 18-fludeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ( 18 F-FDG PET)/CT in elderly patients affected by Hodgkin lymphoma (HL)., Methods: We retrospectively included 90 patients affected by HL who underwent baseline 18 F-FDG-PET/CT and HDCT within a mean interval of 7 days. HDCT and LDCT images were analysed by two blinded observers using segmentation software (Slice-O-Matic, Tomovision) to quantify the areas. HDCT and LDCT measurements were compared using Bland-Altman plots and Passing-Bablock regression analyses. Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was used to correlate measurements from the two imaging modalities., Results: Comparison of HDCT and LDCT data demonstrated a strong correlation for measurement of VAT( r = 0.942, p < 0.0001), SAT ( r = 0.894, p < 0.0001) and SMA ( r = 0.934, p < 0.0001). Instead considering IMAT, correlation was good but less significant ( r = 0.742). The mean difference between the two methods was found to be very small, with a difference of 1% for SAT,+6.1% for VAT,+2.5% for SMA and -1.9% for IMAT., Conclusion: LDCT of PET/CT is a safe, accurate and precise method for the measurements of skeletal muscle area, visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue. Their measurements are reproducible and correlate closely with HDCT., Advances in Knowledge: LLDCT of PET/CT is a safe and accurate method for the measurements of SMA, VAT and SAT; their measurements are closely correlated with HDCT. LDCT can be considered an accurate alternative tool for measuring abdominal fat and muscles in the clinical practice.

Respiratory motion artifacts may affect interpretation of whole-body 18 F-FDG PET/CT scans, especially when lesions are localized between the liver and the lung. We report a case of a patient with breast cancer who underwent PET/CT after therapy and in whom focal 18 F-FDG uptake of equivocal interpretation was observed between the liver and the pleura. A subsequent imaging acquisition of the right lateral decubitus showed that the lesion had a pleural location, thus improving the diagnostic accuracy of the PET/CT finding., (© 2021 by the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging.)

Between March 26 and April 6, among 80 patients who underwent F-FDG PET/CT in our department (Brescia, Italy), 4 showed the presence of an interstitial pneumonia suspected for COVID-19 with reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction confirmation. All patients except one had bilateral ground-glass opacities and/or lung consolidations in at least 2 pulmonary lobes. Inferior lobes and basal segments were the most frequent site of disease. All lung lesions had an increased FDG uptake corresponding to the interstitial pneumonia, and in one case, mediastinal nodal involvement was registered.

In biomass conversion, Nb 2 O 5 has attracted increasing attention as a catalyst support presenting water-tolerant Lewis acid sites. Herein, we address the design of Ni/Nb 2 O 5 catalysts for hydrotreating of lignin to hydrocarbons. To optimize the balance between acidic and hydrogenating properties, the catalysts were first evaluated in the hydrotreating of diphenyl ether. The best catalyst candidate was further explored in the conversion of lignin oil obtained by catalytic upstream biorefining of poplar. As primary products, cycloalkanes were obtained, demonstrating the potential of Ni/Nb 2 O 5 catalysts for the lignin-to-fuels route. However, the Lewis acidity of Nb 2 O 5 also catalyzes coke formation via lignin species condensation. Thereby, an acidity threshold should be found so that dehydration reactions essential to the hydrotreatment are not affected, but the condensation of lignin species prevented. For the utilization of each lignin fraction in the lignin liquors, the development of separation strategies to fractionate the lignin streams by molecular weight ranges constitutes a timely challenge to be tackled. Herein, membrane filtration was applied to the refining of lignin streams obtained from a lignin-first biorefining process based on H-transfer reactions catalyzed by Raney Ni, by using 2-PrOH as a part of the lignin extraction liquor and as an H-donor. A two-stage membrane cascade was considered to separate and concentrate the monophenol-rich fraction from the liquor. Building on the results, an economic evaluation of the potential of membrane filtration for the refining of lignin streams was undertaken. Herein, a lignin-centered convergent approach to produce either aliphatic or aromatic bio-hydrocarbons is introduced. First, poplar or spruce wood was deconstructed by a lignin-first biorefining process, a technique based on the early-stage catalytic conversion of lignin, yielding lignin oils along with cellulosic pulps. Next, the lignin oils were catalytically upgraded in the presence of a phosphidated Ni/SiO 2 catalyst under H 2 pressure. Notably, selectivity toward aliphatics or aromatics can simply be adjusted by changes in H 2 pressure and temperature. The process renders two distinct main cuts of branched hydrocarbons (gasoline: C 6 -C 10 , and kerosene/diesel: C 14 -C 20 ). As the approach is H 2 -intensive, we examined the utilization of pulp as an H 2 source via gasification. For several biomass sources, the H 2 obtainable by gasification stoichiometrically meets the H 2 demand of the deep converting lignin-first biorefinery, making this concept plausible for the production of high-energy-density drop-in biofuels.

Hybrid organic-inorganic anatase (hybrid-TiO 2 ) is prepared by a facile hydrothermal synthesis method employing citric acid. The synthetic approach results in a high surface-area nanocrystalline anatase polymorph of TiO 2 . The uncalcined hybrid-TiO 2 is directly studied as a catalyst for the conversion of glucose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). In the presence of the hybrid-TiO 2 , HMF yields up to 45 % at glucose conversions up to 75 % were achieved in water at 130 °C in a monophasic batch reactor. As identified by Ti K-edge XANES, hybrid-TiO 2 contains a large fraction of fivefold coordinatively unsaturated Ti IV sites, which act as the Lewis acid catalyst for the conversion of glucose into fructose. As citric acid is anchored in the structure of hybrid-TiO 2 , carboxylate groups seem to catalyze the sequential conversion of fructose into HMF. The fate of citric acid bound to anatase and the Ti IV Lewis acid sites throughout recycling experiments is also investigated. In a broader context, this contribution outlines the importance of hydrothermal synthesis for the creation of water-resistant Lewis acid sites for the conversion of sugars. In recent years, lignin valorization has gained upward momentum owing to advances in both plant bioengineering and catalytic processing of lignin. In this new horizon, catalysis is now applied to the 'pulping process' itself, creating efficient methods for lignocellulose fractionation or deconstruction (here referred to as Catalytic Upstream Biorefining or 'CUB'). These processes render, together with delignified pulps, lignin streams of low molecular weight (M w ) and low molecular diversity. Recently, we introduced a CUB process based on Early-stage Catalytic Conversion of Lignin (ECCL) through H-transfer reactions catalyzed by RANEY® Ni. This approach renders a lignin stream obtained as a viscous oil, comprising up to 60 wt% monophenolic compounds (M w < 250 Da). The remaining oil fraction (40 wt%) is mainly composed of lignin oligomers, and as minor products, holocellulose-derived polyols and lignin-derived species of high M w (0.25-2 kDa). Simultaneously, the process yields a holocellulose pulp with a low content of residual lignin (<5 wt%). Despite the efficiency of aqueous solutions of 2-propanol as a solvent for lignin fragments and an H-donor, there is scant information regarding the CUB process carried out in the presence of primary alcohols, which often inhibit the catalytic activity of RANEY® Ni, as revealed in model compound studies performed at low temperature. Considering the composition of the lignin oils obtained from CUB based on ECCL, the processes commonly render ortho-(di)methoxy-4-propylphenol derivatives with a varied degree of defunctionalization of the propyl side chain. In this contribution, we present the role of the alcohol solvent (methanol or 2-propanol) and Ni catalyst (Ni/C or RANEY® Ni) in control over selectivity of phenolic products. The current results indicate that solvent effects on the catalytic processes could hold the key for improving control over the degree of functionalization of the propyl side-chain in the lignin oil obtained from CUB, offering new avenues for lignin valorization at the extraction step.

Organic electrolyte solutions (i.e. mixtures containing an ionic liquid and a polar, molecular co-solvent) are highly versatile solvents for cellulose. However, the underlying solvent-solvent and solvent-solute interactions are not yet fully understood. Herein, mixtures of the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, the co-solvent 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone, and cellulose are investigated using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. The use of a triply- 13 C-labelled ionic liquid enhances the signal-to-noise ratio for 13 C NMR spectroscopy, enabling changes in bonding interactions to be accurately pinpointed. Current observations reveal an additional degree of complexity regarding the distinct roles of cation, anion, and co-solvent toward maintaining cellulose solubility and phase stability. Unexpectedly, the interactions between the dialkylimidazolium ring C 2 -H substituent and cellulose become more pronounced at high temperatures, counteracted by a net weakening of acetate-cellulose interactions. Lignin is an abundant biopolymer with a high carbon content and high aromaticity. Despite its potential as a raw material for the fuel and chemical industries, lignin remains the most poorly utilised of the lignocellulosic biopolymers. Effective valorisation of lignin requires careful fine-tuning of multiple "upstream" (i.e., lignin bioengineering, lignin isolation and "early-stage catalytic conversion of lignin") and "downstream" (i.e., lignin depolymerisation and upgrading) process stages, demanding input and understanding from a broad array of scientific disciplines. This review provides a "beginning-to-end" analysis of the recent advances reported in lignin valorisation. The molecular understanding of the chemistry of 1,4-β-glucans is essential for designing new approaches to the conversion of cellulose into platform chemicals and biofuels. In this endeavor, much attention has been paid to the role of hydrogen bonding occurring in the cellulose structure. So far, however, there has been little discussion about the implications of the electronic nature of the 1,4-β-glycosidic bond and its chemical environment for the activation of 1,4-β-glucans toward acid-catalyzed hydrolysis. This report sheds light on these central issues and addresses their influence on the acid hydrolysis of cellobiose and, by analogy, cellulose. The electronic structure of cellobiose was explored by DFT at the BB1 K/6-31++G(d,p) level. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis was performed to grasp the key bonding concepts. Conformations, protonation sites, and hydrolysis mechanisms were examined. Finding a workaround: The conversion of lignin into low-boiling-point arenes instead of high-boiling-point phenols could greatly facilitate conventional refinery processes. A new procedure for the depolymerization of lignin and simultaneous conversion phenols into arenes is described. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection after biological accident (needlestick injury) is a rare event. This report describes the first case of acute HCV infection after a needlestick injury in a female nursing student at Padua University Hospital. The student nurse was injured on the second finger of the right hand when recapping a 23-gauge needle after taking a blood sample. The patient who was the source was a 72-year-old female with weakly positive anti-HCV test results. Three months after the injury, at the second step of follow-up, a relevant increase in transaminases with a low viral replication activity (350 IU/mL) was observed in the student, indicating HCV infection. The patient tested positive for the same genotype (1b) of HCV as the injured student. A rapid decline in transaminases, which was not accompanied by viral clearance, and persistently positive HCV-RNA was described 1 mo later. Six months after testing positive for HCV, the student was treated with pegylated interferon plus ribavirin for 24 wk. A rapid virological response was observed after 4 wk of treatment, and a sustained virological response (SVR) was evident 6 mo after therapy withdrawal, confirming that the patient was definitively cured. Despite the favourable IL28B gene (rs12979860) CC- polymorphism observed in the patient, which is usually predictive of a spontaneous clearance and SVR, spontaneous viral clearance did not take place; however, infection with this genotype was promising for a sustained virological response after therapy.

Background: In order to generate biofuels, insoluble cellulosic substrates are pretreated and subsequently hydrolyzed with cellulases. One way to pretreat cellulose in a safe and environmentally friendly manner is to apply, under mild conditions, non-hydrolyzing proteins such as swollenin - naturally produced in low yields by the fungus Trichoderma reesei. To yield sufficient swollenin for industrial applications, the first aim of this study is to present a new way of producing recombinant swollenin. The main objective is to show how swollenin quantitatively affects relevant physical properties of cellulosic substrates and how it affects subsequent hydrolysis., Results: After expression in the yeast Kluyveromyces lactis, the resulting swollenin was purified. The adsorption parameters of the recombinant swollenin onto cellulose were quantified for the first time and were comparable to those of individual cellulases from T. reesei. Four different insoluble cellulosic substrates were then pretreated with swollenin. At first, it could be qualitatively shown by macroscopic evaluation and microscopy that swollenin caused deagglomeration of bigger cellulose agglomerates as well as dispersion of cellulose microfibrils (amorphogenesis). Afterwards, the effects of swollenin on cellulose particle size, maximum cellulase adsorption and cellulose crystallinity were quantified. The pretreatment with swollenin resulted in a significant decrease in particle size of the cellulosic substrates as well as in their crystallinity, thereby substantially increasing maximum cellulase adsorption onto these substrates. Subsequently, the pretreated cellulosic substrates were hydrolyzed with cellulases. Here, pretreatment of cellulosic substrates with swollenin, even in non-saturating concentrations, significantly accelerated the hydrolysis. By correlating particle size and crystallinity of the cellulosic substrates with initial hydrolysis rates, it could be shown that the swollenin-induced reduction in particle size and crystallinity resulted in high cellulose hydrolysis rates., Conclusions: Recombinant swollenin can be easily produced with the robust yeast K. lactis. Moreover, swollenin induces deagglomeration of cellulose agglomerates as well as amorphogenesis (decrystallization). For the first time, this study quantifies and elucidates in detail how swollenin affects different cellulosic substrates and their hydrolysis.

Hydrophobic liquid membranes have a high technological potential in many fields of separation science. The dynamics of these systems is very complex and still not fully understood. In this work we studied the effect of the incorporation of cationic and anionic L-tryptophan at pH 1.8 and 10.0, respectively, in Aerosol-OT reverse micelles performing small angle X-ray scattering experiments. The use of a synchrotron radiation source allowed efficient in situ data acquisition. Several insights on L-tryptophan transport dynamics through hydrophobic membranes containing AOT could be obtained from these SAXS experiments, such as amino acid site localization and changes in the reverse micelle sizes.
