A continuous fixed-bed biosorption process was established for cadmium (Cd) removal by Scenedesmus obliquus CNW-N (isolated from southern Taiwan) cells immobilized onto loofa sponge. This immobilized-cell biosorption process allows better recovery and reusability of the microalgal biomass. The growth of microalgae on the matrix support with appropriate nutrient supplementation could enhance the overall metal removal activity. Major operating parameters (e.g., feeding flow rate, cycle number of medium replacement, and particle diameter of the sponge) were studied for treatability evaluation. The most promising cell growth on the sponge support was obtained at a flow rate of 0.284 bed volume (BV)/min, sponge particle diameter of 1 cm, and with one cycle of medium replacement. The performance of a novel integrated anaerobic fluidized-bed membrane bioreactor (IAFMBR) for treating practical domestic wastewater was investigated at a step dropped temperature from 35, 25, to 15°C. The COD removal was 74.0 ± 3.7%, 67.1 ± 2.9% and 51.1 ± 2.6% at 35, 25 and 15°C, respectively. The COD removal depended both on influent strength and operational temperature. The accumulation of VFAs (Volatile Fatty Acids) was affected by temperature, and acetic acid was the most sensitive one to the decrease of temperature. The methanogenic activity of the sludge decreased eventually and the methane yield was dropped from 0.17 ± 0.03, 0.15 ± 0.02 to 0.10 ± 0.01 L/Ld. And as compared with a mesophilic temperature, a low temperature can accelerate membrane biofouling. A two-stage process of sequential dark fermentative hydrogen production and microalgal cultivation was applied to enhance the energy conversion efficiency from high strength synthetic organic wastewater. Ethanol fermentation bacterium Ethanoligenens harbinense B49 was used as hydrogen producer, and the energy conversion efficiency and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency reached 18.6% and 28.3% in dark fermentation. Acetate was the main soluble product in dark fermentative effluent, which was further utilized by microalga Scenedesmus sp. R-16. The final algal biomass concentration reached 1.98gL(-1), and the algal biomass was rich in lipid (40.9%) and low in protein (23.3%) and carbohydrate (11.9%). Compared with single dark fermentation stage, the energy conversion efficiency and COD removal efficiency of two-stage system remarkably increased 101% and 131%, respectively. The widespread application of conventional activated sludge treatment process has been employed to deal with a variety of municipal and industrial sewage. While the generation of waste activated sludge (WAS) was considerably huge, the management and disposal expenses were substantially costly. A promising process aimed for WAS reduction during the operation process is urgently needed. Thus, increasing attentions emphasizing on the improved or novel sludge reduction processes should be intensively recommended in the future. This review presents the current and emerging technologies for excess sludge minimization within the process of sewage treatment. Background: Biodiesel production from oleaginous microalgae shows great potential as a promising alternative to conventional fossil fuels. Currently, most research focus on algal biomass production with autotrophic cultivation, but this cultivation strategy induces low biomass concentration and it is difficult to be used in large-scale algal biomass production. By contrast, heterotrophic algae allows higher growth rate and can accumulate higher lipid. However, the fast-growing and lipid-rich microalgae that can be cultivated in heterotrophic system for the industrial application of biodiesel production are still few. Traditional solvent extraction and gravimetric determination to detect the microalgal total lipid content is time-consuming and laborious, which has become a major limiting factor for selecting large number of algae specimens. Thus, it is critical to develop a rapid and efficient procedure for the screening of lipid-rich microalgae., Results: A novel green microalga Scenedesmus sp. strain R-16 with high total lipid content was selected using the Nile red staining from eighty-eight isolates. Various carbon sources (fructose, glucose and acetate) and nitrogen sources (nitrate, urea, peptone and yeast extract) can be utilized for microalgal growth and lipid production, and the optimal carbon and nitrogen sources were glucose (10 g L-1) and nitrate (0.6 g L-1), respectively. Compared to autotrophic situation, the strain R-16 can grow well heterotrophically without light and the accumulated total lipid content and biomass reached 43.4% and 3.46 g L-1, respectively. In addition, nitrogen deficiency led to an accumulation of lipid and the total lipid content was as high as 52.6%, and it was worth noting that strain R-16 exhibited strong tolerance to high glucose (up to 100 g L-1) and a wide range of pH (4.0-11.0)., Conclusions: The newly developed ultrasonic-assisted Nile red method proved to be an efficient isolation procedure and was successfully used in the selection of oleaginous microalgae. The isolated novel green microalgal strain R-16 was rich in lipid and can live in varied and contrasting conditions. The algae appeared to have great potential for application in microalgae-based biodiesel production.

In this research, environmentally friendly fungal pretreatment was first adopted for deconstruction of cornstalk. Then the fungal-pretreated cornstalk was employed to produce hydrogen in simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) using crude enzyme from Trichoderma viride and Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum W16. The influence of various factors including substrate concentration, initial pH, and enzyme loading on hydrogen production were evaluated. The highest hydrogen yield of 89.3 ml/g-cornstalk was obtained with an initial pH 6.5, 0.75% substrate concentration, and 34 FPU/g cellulose. Compared the result with SSF of physical or chemical pretreated lignocellulosic materials, this research suggested an economic and efficient way for hydrogen production from lignocellulosic biomass., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The Songhua River is the third largest river in China and the primary source of drinking and irrigation water for northeastern China. The distribution of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water [dissolved water (DW) and suspended particulate matter (SPM)], sediment, and soil in the river basin was investigated, and the associated risk of cancer from these PAHs was also assessed. The total concentration of PAHs ranged from 13.9 to 161 ng L(-1) in DW, 9.21 to 83.1 ng L(-1) in SPM, 20.5 to 632 ng g(-1) dw (dry weight) in sediment, and from 30.1 to 870 ng g(-1) dw in soil. The compositional pattern of PAHs indicated that three-ring PAHs were predominant in DW and SPM samples, while four-ring PAHs dominated in sediment and soil samples. The spatial distribution of PAHs revealed some site-specific sources along the river, with principal component analysis indicating that these were from pyrogenic sources (such as coal and biomass combustion, and vehicle emissions) and coke oven emission distinguished as the main source of PAHs in the Songhua River Basin. Based on the ingestion of PAH-contaminated drinking water from the Songhua River, cancer risk was quantitatively estimated by combining the Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk assessment model and BaP-equivalent concentration for five age groups of people (adults, teenagers, children, toddlers, and infants). Overall, the results suggest that the estimated integrated lifetime cancer risk for all groups was in acceptable levels. This study is the first attempt to provide information on the cancer risk of PAHs in drinking water from the Songhua River.

The present study investigated the synergistic effects of a novel combined uncoupler of TCS and TCP on excess activated sludge reduction during a 60-day operation using a sequence batch reactor (SBR). Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to obtain the optimal dosage of the combined uncoupler. The results of 60-day operation demonstrated the combined uncoupler had effectively reduced the sludge yield by approximately 52%, without serious affecting the substrate removal efficiency. The high sludge reduction rate revealed that it was feasible and effective to utilize a combined uncoupler to limit excess activated sludge. The three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy analysis of activated sludge with different metabolic uncouplers indicated that tryptophan, tyrosine protein-like substances and tryptophan, tyrosine amino-like substances were reduced by adding a combined uncoupler. Air samples were concurrently collected using high volume air samplers for 24 h every week from September 2008 to August 2009 at 15 sites (11 urban, 1 suburban, and 3 background/rural) across China. Twelve polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners (BDE-17, -28, -47, -66, -85, -99, -100, -138, -153, -154, -183, and -209) were measured. Total PBDE concentrations (∑12PBDEs) in air (gas + particle phases) were in the range of 11.0-838 pg m(-3) with a mean of 232 ± 72 (mean ± SE) pg m(-3). The site with the highest concentration was Guangzhou (838 ± 126 pg m(-3)), followed by Beijing (781 ± 107 pg m(-3)). Significant positive correlations were found between PBDEs levels and urban population (R = 0.69, P < 0.05) and gross industrial output values (R = 0.87, P < 0.001) as well. BDE-209 was the dominating congener with the contribution of 64 ± 23% to ∑12PBDEs, followed by BDE-47(8 ± 8%) and -99(6 ± 5%) at all urban and suburban sites. At background/rural sites, however, BDE-47 was the dominating congener, followed by BDE-99, together accounting for 52 ± 21% of ∑12PBDEs, while BDE-209 was only 11 ± 2%. It was found that PBDEs at the 15 sites showed a primary distribution and fractionation pattern. This study produced more than 700 pairs of air samples in gaseous and particulate phases with a wide temperature range of ∼60 °C, providing a good opportunity to investigate gas-particle partitioning for individual PBDE congeners. The results of gas-particle partitioning analysis for PBDEs using both subcooled-liquid-vapor pressure (PL)-based and octanol-air partition coefficient (KOA)-based models indicated that PBDEs in air at all sampling sites had not reached equilibrium because the slope values (mO) in the KOA-based equation and the opposite slope values (mP) in the PL-based equation at all 15 sampling sites were less than 1. It also found that both mO and -mP were significantly and positively correlated with the annual average temperatures of sampling sites and also significantly and negatively correlated with the mole masses of PBDE congeners, indicating a general trend that the higher the temperature at the sampling site and the lower the mole mass of the PBDE congeners are, the closer to the equilibrium the congeners approach and vice versa. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report the correlations of the slope values for both the KOA-based and PL-based equations with temperatures at sampling sites and mole masses for individual PBDE congeners.

Three activated sludge processes (ASPs) were modeled and driven by dissolved complex organics (F-ASP), propionic acid (P-ASP), and acetic acid (A-ASP), and various parameters were subsequently estimated. The energy depletion for carbon removal was 0.146, 0.120, and 0.119 kWh/m(3) of treated wastewater for F-ASP, P-ASP, and A-ASP, respectively, suggesting that acetic acid can forward energy conservation. The ratio of substrate storage to oxidation in F-ASP, P-ASP, and A-ASP was 0, 0.25, and 0.52, respectively, further demonstrating that substrate eliminations from P-ASP and A-ASP were both dominated by substrate storage for polymer production, not by total oxidation; thus, they exhibited lower energy-consuming levels than F-ASP. Chlorinated nitroaromatic antibiotic chloramphenicol (CAP) is a priority pollutant in wastewaters. A fed-batch bioelectrochemical system (BES) with biocathode with applied voltage of 0.5 V (served as extracellular electron donor) and glucose as intracellular electron donor was applied to reduce CAP to amine product (AMCl2). The biocathode BES converted 87.1 ± 4.2% of 32 mg/L CAP in 4 h, and the removal efficiency reached 96.0 ± 0.9% within 24 h. Conversely, the removal efficiency of CAP in BES with an abiotic cathode was only 73.0 ± 3.2% after 24 h. When the biocathode was disconnected (no electrochemical reaction but in the presence of microbial activities), the CAP removal rate was dropped to 62.0% of that with biocathode BES. Acetylation of one hydroxyl of CAP was noted exclusive in the biocatalyzed process, while toxic intermediates, hydroxylamino (HOAM), and nitroso (NO), from CAP reduction were observed only in the abiotic cathode BES. Electrochemical hydrodechlorination and dehalogenase were responsible for dechlorination of AMCl2 to AMCl in abiotic and microbial cathode BES, respectively. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) highlighted higher peak currents and lower overpotentials for CAP reduction at the biocathode compared with abiotic cathode. With the biocathode BES, antibacterial activity of CAP was completely removed and nitro group reduction combined with dechlorination reaction enhanced detoxication efficiency of CAP. The CAP cathodic transformation pathway was proposed based on intermediates analysis. Bacterial community analysis indicated that the dominate bacteria on the biocathode were belonging to α, β, and γ-Proteobacteria. The biocathode BES could serve as a potential treatment process for CAP-containing wastewater.

Background: Hydrogen recovered from organic wastes and solar energy by photo-fermentative bacteria (PFB) has been suggested as a promising bioenergy strategy. However, the use of PFB for hydrogen production generally suffers from a serious biomass washout from photobioreactor, due to poor flocculation of PFB. In the continuous operation, PFB cells cannot be efficiently separated from supernatant and rush out with effluent from reactor continuously, which increased the effluent turbidity, meanwhile led to increases in pollutants. Moreover, to replenish the biomass washout, substrate was continuously utilized for cell growth rather than hydrogen production. Consequently, the poor flocculability not only deteriorated the effluent quality, but also decreased the potential yield of hydrogen from substrate. Therefore, enhancing the flocculability of PFB is urgent necessary to further develop photo-fermentative process., Results: Here, we demonstrated that L-cysteine could improve hydrogen production of Rhodopseudomonas faecalis RLD-53, and more importantly, simultaneously trigger remarkable aggregation of PFB. Experiments showed that L-cysteine greatly promoted the production of extracellular polymeric substances, especially secretion of protein containing more disulfide bonds, and help for enhancement stability of floc of PFB. Through formation of disulfide bonds, L-cysteine not only promoted production of EPS, in particular the secretion of protein, but also stabilized the final confirmation of protein in EPS. In addition, the cell surface elements and functional groups, especially surface charged groups, have also been changed by L-cysteine. Consequently, absolute zeta potential reached a minimum value at 1.0 g/l of L-cysteine, which obviously decreased electrostatic repulsion interaction energy based on DLVO theory. Total interaction energy barrier decreased from 389.77 KT at 0.0 g/l of L-cysteine to 127.21 kT at 1.0 g/l., Conclusions: Thus, the strain RLD-53 overcame the total energy barrier and flocculated effectively. After a short settlement, the biomass rush out will be significantly reduced and the effluent quality will be greatly improved in the continuous operation. Furthermore, aggregation of PFB could enable high biomass hold-up of photobioreactor, which allows the photobioreactor to operate at low hydraulic retention time and high organic loading rate. Therefore, the described flocculation behaviour during photo-hydrogen production is potentially suitable for practicable application.

Anammox start-up can be limited by the availability of seeding biomass in some areas. Previous studies have listed suitable alternative seeding sludge for anammox start-up such as anaerobic digestion sludge and conventional activated sludge (CAS), the ecological reasons behind has long been ignored. In this study, the inherent ecological factors that trigger a prompt start-up of anammox were identified, focusing on the initial relative abundance and concentration of anammox bacteria. An external membrane bioreactor was utilized as an enriching tool due to its suitability of retaining cells. Results revealed that a high initial concentration of anammox bacteria benefitted the start-up, meanwhile an even community seeding sludge (Gini coefficient<0.25) gained a more than three-time higher anammox activity compared to the uneven one (Gini coefficient>0.5). This study investigated the effects of ozone and ultrasound (US) pretreatments, both individually and combined, on waste activated sludge reduction. Batch tests were conducted first to optimize the individual ozone and US pretreatments. Maximum sludge reduction ratios of 10.89% and 23% were obtained at 0.15g O3/g total solids ozone dose and 1.5W/mL US energy density, respectively. The combined ozone and US pretreatments were studied using response surface methodology. A maximum sludge reduction ratio of 40.14% was achieved by the combined ozone/US pretreatment with an ozone dose of 0.154g O3/g total solids and an US energy density of 1.445W/mL. The analysis of the dissolved organic matter by three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the combined pretreatment was superior to the individual ozone and US pretreatments, and also demonstrated the synergetic effect of these two combined pretreatments., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. This study aimed to prove the promotion effects of ultrasonic on malachite green (MG) decolorization in the ultrasonic-assisted ozone oxidation process (UAOOP), and propose the possible pathway of MG degradation. The decolorization of MG followed an apparent pseudo first-order kinetic law (initial MG concentration 100-1000 mg/L). When ultrasonic (US) was applied with ozone simultaneously, the apparent pseudo-first-order rate constant (K(app)) increased, and the time MG decolorized to the half of initial concentration (T(1/2)) shortened 185 s (1000 mg/L). Moreover, the stoichiometric ratio (Z(app)) between O(3) and MG was enhanced by US to 2.0 mol, saving 11% oxidant addition, comparing to individual ozone process. These results indicated that the application of US can reduce reaction time and dose of ozone addition. The possible pathway of MG degradation included three major approaches. Stringent new legislation for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is currently motivating innovation and optimization of wastewater treatment technologies. Evaluating the environmental performance of a wastewater treatment system is a necessary precursor before proposing implementation of WWTPs designed to address the global requirements for reduced resource use, energy consumption and environmental emissions. However, developing overly-sophisticated treatment methods may lead to negative environmental effects. This study was conducted to employ a process modeling approach from a life cycle perspective to construct and evaluate six anaerobic/anoxic/oxic wastewater treatment systems that include a water line, sludge line and bioenergy recovery system and was designed to meet different treatment standards in China. The results revealed that improved treatments optimized for local receiving watercourses can be realized at the cost of higher resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This paper offers an effective pretreatment method that can simultaneously achieve excess sludge reduction and bio-hydrogen production from sludge self-fermentation. Batch tests demonstrated that the combinative use of ozone/ultrasound pretreatment had an advantage over the individual ozone and ultrasound pretreatments. The optimal condition (ozone dose of 0.158 g O(3)/g DS and ultrasound energy density of 1.423 W/mL) was recommended by response surface methodology. The maximum hydrogen yield was achieved at 9.28 mL H(2)/g DS under the optimal condition. According to the kinetic analysis, the highest hydrogen production rate (1.84 mL/h) was also obtained using combined pretreatment, which well fitted the predicted equation (the squared regression statistic was 0.9969). The disintegration degrees (DD) were limited to 19.57% and 46.10% in individual ozone and ultrasound pretreatments, while it reached up to 60.88% in combined pretreatment. Biological treatment of sulfate-laden wastewater consists of two separate reactors to reduce sulfate to sulfide by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and to oxidize sulfide to sulfur (S(0)) by sulfide oxidation bacteria (SOB). To have SRB+SOB in a single reactor faced difficulty of low S(0) conversion. This study for the first time revealed that dissolved oxygen (DO) level can be used to manipulate SRB+SOB reactions in a single reactor. This work demonstrated successful operation of an integrated SRB+SOB reactor under micro-aerobic condition. At DO = 0.10-0.12 mg l(-1), since the activities of SOB were enhanced by limited oxygen, the removal efficiency for sulfate reached 81.5% and the recovery of S(0) peaked at 71.8%, higher than those reported in literature. At increased DO, chemical oxidation of sulfide with molecular oxygen competed with SOB so conversion of S(0) started to decline. The feasibility of fungal pretreatment of cornstalk with Phanerochaete chrysosporium for enzymatic saccharification and H(2) production was investigated in this study. Firstly, cornstalk was pretreated with P. chrysosporium at 29 °C under static condition for 15 d, lignin reduction was up to 34.3% with holocellulose loss less than 10%. Microscopic structure observation combined FTIR analysis further demonstrated that the lignin and crystallinity were decreased. Subsequently, the fungal-pretreated cornstalk was subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis by the crude cellulase from Trichoderma viride to produce fermentable sugars which were then fermented to bio-H(2) using Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum W16. The maximum enzymatic saccharification was found to be 47.3% which was 20.3% higher than the control without pretreatment. Upon fermentation of enzymatic hydrolysate, the yield of H(2) was calculated to be 80.3 ml/g-pretreated cornstalk. Current estimation schemes as decision support tools for the selection of wastewater treatment alternatives focus primarily on the treatment efficiency, effluent quality, and environmental consequences for receiving water bodies. However, these schemes generally do not quantify the potential to convert pollutants in wastewater to recoverable resources. This study proposes a refined evaluation scheme for choices of wastewater treatment processes that quantifies not only adverse environmental effects but also bioenergy and nutrient recovery indices. An original means of data processing was established and clear estimate indicators were consequently obtained to allow a smooth overall estimation. An array of wastewater treatment alternatives that meet three effluent limits were used as case studies to demonstrate how the present scheme works, simultaneously, to identify optimum choices. It is concluded in the overall estimation that the lower sustainability of wastewater treatment contributed by increasingly stringent discharge demands was offset and mitigated by the resource-recovery scenarios involved, and the scenario of recovering nutrients via excess-sludge composting was of more benefit. Thus, before tightening wastewater discharge requirements, one should bear in mind the situation of multiple sustainability by setting a goal to achieve not only the greatest reduction in environmental burden but also the maximum resource-recovery benefits.

A novel continuous mixed immobilized sludge reactor (CMISR) containing activated carbon as support carrier was used for fermentative hydrogen production from molasses wastewater. When the CMISR system operated at the conditions of influent COD of 2000-6000mg/L, hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6h and temperature of 35°C, stable ethanol type fermentation was formed after 40days operation. The H(2) content in biogas and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal were estimated to be 46.6% and 13%, respectively. The effects of organic loading rates (OLRs) on the CMISR hydrogen production system were also investigated. It was found that the maximum hydrogen production rate of 12.51mmol/hL was obtained at OLR of 32kg/m(3)d and the maximum hydrogen yield by substrate consumed of 130.57mmol/mol happened at OLR of 16kg/m(3)d. This research set up an ultrasonic-assisted ozone oxidation process (UAOOP) to decolorize the triphenylmethane dyes wastewater. Five factors - temperature, initial pH, reaction time, ultrasonic power (low frequency 20 kHz), and ozone concentration - were investigated. Response surface methodology was used to find out the major factors influencing color removal rate and the interactions between these factors, and optimized the operating parameters as well. Under the experimental conditions: reaction temperature 39.81 °C, initial pH 5.29, ultrasonic power 60 W and ozone concentration 0.17 g/L, the highest color removals were achieved with 10 min reaction time and the initial concentration of the MG solution was 1000 mg/L. The optimal results indicated that the UAOOP was a rapid, efficient and low energy consumption technique to decolorize the high concentration MG wastewater. A new bioelectrochemical system (BES), a membrane-free, continuous feeding up-flow biocatalyzed electrolysis reactor (UBER) was developed to reduce oxidative toxic chemicals to less- or non-toxic reduced form in cathode zone with oxidation of electron donor in anode zone. Influent was fed from the bottom of UBER and passed through cathode zone and then anode zone. External power source (0.5 V) was provided between anode and cathode to enhance electrochemical reactions. Granular graphite and carbon brush were used as cathode and anode, respectively. This system was tested for the reduction of nitrobenzene (NB) using acetate as electron donor and carbon source. The influent contained NB (50-200 mg L(-1)) and acetate (1000 mg L(-1)). NB was removed by up to 98% mainly in cathode zone. The anode potential maintained under -480 mV. The maximum NB removal rate was up to 3.5 mol m(-3) TV d(-1) (TV=total empty volume) and the maximum aniline (AN) formation rate was 3.06 mol m(-3) TV d(-1). Additional energy required was less than 0.075 kWh mol(-1)NB. The molar ratio of NB removed vs acetate consumed varied from 4.3 ± 0.4 to 2.3 ± 0.1 mol mol(-1). Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is an energy saving biological nitrogen removal process which was limited to slow growth rate of anammox bacteria during start-up period. This study investigated the start-up of anammox process by a laboratory sequential batch reactor (SBR) for 218 days and subsequently modified the reactor as a membrane bioreactor (MBR) for 178 days. Modification of a SBR as MBR with installation of an external membrane module resulted in acceleration of specific anammox activity by 19 times. The acceleration of specific anammox activity with MBR was further confirmed by starting-up another MBR for a 242 day period. Molecular microbial analyses showed that Candidatus "Brocadia anammoxidans" and Candidatus "Kuenenia stuttgartiensis" were the dominant species in the inocula and biomass developed in the reactor. Nitrobenzene (NB) is a toxic compound that is often found as a pollutant in the environment. The present removal strategies suffer from high cost or slow conversion rate. Here, we investigated the conversion of NB to aniline (AN), a less toxic endproduct that can easily be mineralized, using a fed-batch bioelectrochemical system with microbially catalyzed cathode. When a voltage of 0.5 V was applied in the presence of glucose, 88.2 ± 0.60% of the supplied NB (0.5 mM) was transformed to AN within 24 h, which was 10.25 and 2.90 times higher than an abiotic cathode and open circuit controlled experiment, respectively. AN was the only product detected during bioelectrochemical reduction of NB (maximum efficiency 98.70 ± 0.87%), whereas in abiotic conditions nitrosobenzene was observed as intermediate of NB reduction to AN (decreased efficiency to 73.75 ± 3.2%). When glucose was replaced by NaHCO(3), the rate of NB degradation decreased about 10%, selective transformation of NB to AN was still achieved (98.93 ± 0.77%). Upon autoclaving the cathode electrode, nitrosobenzene was formed as an intermediate, leading to a decreased AN formation efficiency of 71.6%. Cyclic voltammetry highlighted higher peak currents as well as decreased overpotentials for NB reduction at the biocathode. 16S rRNA based analysis of the biofilm on the cathode indicated that the cathode was dominated by an Enterococcus species closely related to Enterococcus aquimarinus.

Batch tests were employed to estimate the optimal conditions for excess sludge reduction under an alternating aerobic/oxygen-limited environment using response surface methodology. Three key operating parameters, initial mixed liquor suspended solids (initial MLSS), HRT (hydraulic retention time) and reaction temperature (T), were selected, and their interrelationships studied by the Box-Behnken design. The experimental data and ANOVA analysis showed that the coefficient of determination (R(2)) was 0.9956 and the adjR(2) was 0.9912, which demonstrates that the modified model was significant. The optimum conditions were predicted to give a maximal ΔMLSS yield of 226 mg/L at an initial MLSS of 10,021 ± 50 mg/L, an HRT of 9.1h and a reaction temperature of 29°C. The prediction was tested by triplicate experiments, where a ΔMLSS yield of 233 mg/L was achieved under the chosen optimal conditions. The results of the use of an expert system (ES) to control a novel multi-stage loop membrane bioreactor (MLMBR) for the simultaneous removal of organic substances and nutrients are reported. The study was conducted at a bench-scale plant for the purpose of meeting new discharge standards (GB21904-2008) for the treatment of chemical synthesis-based pharmaceutical wastewater (1200-9600 mg/L COD, 500-2500 mg/L BOD5, 50-200 mg/L NH4+-N and 105-400 mg/L TN in the influent water) by developing a distributed control system. The system allows various expert operational approaches to be deployed with the goal of minimizing organic substances and nitrogen levels in the outlet while using the minimum amount of energy. The proposed distributed control system, which is supervised by a Knowledge-Based Expert System (KBES) constructed with G2 (a tool for expert system development) and a back propagation BP artificial neural network, permits the on-line implementation of every operating strategy of the experimental system. A support vector machine (SVM) is applied to achieve pattern recognition. A set of experiments involving variable sludge retention time (SRT), hydraulic retention time (HRT) and dissolved oxygen (DO) was carried out. Using the proposed system, the amounts of COD, TN and NH4+-N in the effluent decreased by 55%, 62% and 38%, respectively, compared to the usual operating conditions. The aim of this study was to implement central-composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize the operational parameters for hybrid anaerobic baffled microbial reactor (HABMR) remedying mixed printing and dyeing wastewater (MPDW). The individual and interactive effects of three variables, hydraulic retention time (HRT), pH, sludge loading rate (SLR) on the COD and color removal rates were evaluated. In the area of HRT: 12.5-13.9 h, pH: 9.0-9.5 and SLR: 0.27-0.33 kg COD/(kg MLVSSd), COD and color removal rates of HABMR exceeded 40% and 60%, simultaneously. The check experiment revealed that the amount of COD and color in the effluent could be decreased by 9.97% and 10.12% compared to the usual operating conditions, respectively. In the study of traditional Chinese medicine wastewater, it was discussed for the effect of different sets of 16S rDNA universal primers on DGGE fingerprinting and microbial community diversity of aerobic and anaerobic activated sludge from one traditional Chinese medicine wastewater treatment. The genome DNA of activated sludge was isolated, and eleven sets of primers were used to amplify the four variable regions of 16S rDNA, the resolution of DGGE fingerprinting and community diversity was analyzed. The results indicated that community diversity with different sets of universal primers by DGGE was obviously different. Separated patterns of the V3 and V6-V8 regions were better than of V1-V3 and V3-V5. In the DGGE profiles, bands and diversity from V3 were most, bands and diversity from V3-V5 and V6-V8 were a little worse than those of V3. According to the length of targeted sequence and the resolution of DGGE fingerprinting, V6-V8 (B968F/B1401R) are recommended to be used to do the DGGE analysis. Mix I341F/I534R and B341F/B534R PCR product equally to make DGGE analysis can get more community diversity information.

In order to elucidate how dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration influenced the generation of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP) in mixed liquor and biocake, 16S rDNA fingerprinting analyses were performed to investigate the variation of the microbial community in an aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR). The function of microbial community structure was proved to be ultimately responsible for biofouling. Obvious microbial community succession from the subphylum of Betaproteobacteria to Deltaproteobacteria was observed in biocake. High concentration of EPS in biocake under the low DO concentration (0.5 mg L(-1)) caused severe biofouling. The correlation coefficient of membrane fouling rate with EPS content in biocake (0.9941-0.9964) was much higher than that in mixed liquor (0.6689-0.8004)., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. In this study, a membrane-based process was applied to simultaneously reclaim methane and generate reused water from raw domestic wastewater. The system was comprised of up-flow anaerobic sludge fixed bed (UAFB), anoxic sink (AS) and aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR). The hydraulic retention time of UAFB (HRT(U)) was gradually shortened from 8h to 6h, 3h and to 1h, while the HRT of AS and MBR kept at 8 h. It is found that HRT(U) of 3h was more suitable for the balancing production of biogas and volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and the VFAs served as carbon source for denitrification. The trans-membrane pressure (TMP) of the MBR kept lower than 0.04 MPa without wash or change of membrane sheet, however, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis indicated that microbes attached to the inner-surface of membrane, causing irreversible fouling after 133-day operation. The denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) profiles of amplified 16S rDNA gene fragments proved that more functional bacteria and higher microbial diversity emerged at HRT(U) of 3h and 1h. The anaerobic biological treatment of raw sewage under low ambient temperatures was investigated in an up-flow anaerobic fixed bed (UAFB) reactor, over a 220-day trial period. The operating temperature was lowered stepwisely from 35 to 25, 20 and 15°C. Obvious accumulation of acetic acid was observed in the effluent as the temperature dropped, which almost tripled at 15°C compared to that at 35°C. An interesting psychrophilic-forward-shift trend of methane production rate following the decrease of temperature was discovered. The methane yield at each trial was 169, 201, 256 and 269 L(STP) CH(4)/kg COD(removed). For each temperature trial, about 32.6%, 28.3%, 34.4% and 34.9% were removed in form of methane. Based on PCR-DGGE results, the band corresponded to Methanosphaera spp. only showed up on 15°C profile. Analysis of both methane production and DGGE results indicated that psychro-tolerant microorganisms dominated the archaeal populations in the UAFB under low-temperature., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. This study reports the fabrication of a new membrane electrode assembly by using stainless steel mesh (SSM) as raw material and its effectiveness as gas diffusion electrode (GDE) for electrochemical oxygen reduction in microbial fuel cell (MFC). Based on feeding glucose (0.5 g L(-1)) substrate to a single-chambered MFC, power generation using SSM-based GDE was increased with the decrease of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) content applied during fabrication, reaching the optimum power density of 951.6 mW m(-2) at 20% PTFE. Repeatable cell voltage of 0.51 V (external resistance of 400 Ω) and maximum power density of 951.6 mW m(-2) produced for the MFC with SSM-based GDE are comparable to that of 0.52 V and 972.6 mW m(-2), respectively obtained for the MFC containing typical carbon cloth (CC)-made GDE. Besides, Coulombic efficiency (CE) is found higher for GDE (SSM or CC) with membrane assembly than without, which results preliminarily from the mitigation of Coulombic loss being associated with oxygen diffusion and substrate crossover. This study demonstrates that with its good electrical conductivity and much lower cost, the SSM-made GDE suggests a promising alternative as efficient and more economically viable material to conventional typical carbon for power production from biomass in MFC., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Investigating how a bioreactor functions is a necessary precursor for successful reactor design and operation. Traditional methods used to investigate flow-field cannot meet this challenge accurately and economically. Hydrodynamics model can solve this problem, but to understand a bioreactor in sufficient depth, it is often insufficient. In this paper, a coupled hydrodynamics-reaction kinetics model was formulated from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code to simulate a gas-liquid-solid three-phase biotreatment system for the first time. The hydrodynamics model is used to formulate prediction of the flow field and the reaction kinetics model then portrays the reaction conversion process. The coupled model is verified and used to simulate the behavior of an expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor for biohydrogen production. The flow patterns were visualized and analyzed. The coupled model also demonstrates a qualitative relationship between hydrodynamics and biohydrogen production. There has been little work on the optimal configuration of biohydrogen production reactors. This paper describes three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of gas-liquid flow in a laboratory-scale continuous stirred-tank reactor used for biohydrogen production. To evaluate the role of hydrodynamics in reactor design and optimize the reactor configuration, an optimized impeller design has been constructed and validated with CFD simulations of the normal and optimized impeller over a range of speeds and the numerical results were also validated by examination of residence time distribution. By integrating the CFD simulation with an ethanol-type fermentation process experiment, it was shown that impellers with different type and speed generated different flow patterns, and hence offered different efficiencies for biohydrogen production. This study investigated the temperature influence on intracellular absorption and extra-cellular phosphorus removal by extra-cellular polymeric substance (EPS) in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process. Three sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were operated in anaerobic/aerobic sequence at 5.0, 15.0 and 25.0 degrees C. Phosphorus removed by intracellular absorption was demonstrated as the dominant part (>80%) in total phosphorus removal operated under different temperatures and the highest total phosphorus removal rate of 95% was obtained due to the highest intracellular phosphorus absorption of 18.2mg P in a typical cycle at 15.0 degrees C. Phosphorus removed by EPS removal achieved the highest value at 5.0 degrees C (2.4 mg P/cycle), which resulted in a higher total phosphorus removal rate at 5.0 degrees C (90%) than that at 25.0 degrees C (83%). Low temperature was propitious to EPS phosphorus removal, accounting for 13% of total phosphorus removal at 5.0 degrees C, which could be mainly due to magnesium phosphate precipitation., ((c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The combined treatment process making up of up-flow anaerobic sludge fixed bed (UAFB), anoxic tank and aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR) was used to treat domestic wastewater. And the ability of reclaiming methane and reusing wastewater was investigated. The efficiency of the combined treatment process treating wastewater at optimized parameters was studied in this paper. The combined treatment process treating domestic wastewater run at optimized parameters (20 degrees C, HRT were 3 h, 3 h, 3.5 h) indicated that, the anaerobic gas production was 1.55 L/d, the COD and NH4+ -N removal efficiency were 93.28% and 90.60% respectively, UAFB effluent including 54.74 mg/L of total VFAs, corresponding NO3- -N accumulating rate was 45.19% and TN removal efficiency was 45.51%. At the same time, it was found that sludge concentration of anoxic tank and aerobic MBR could be maintained at a low level, which is so rich in significance for sludge reduction and delaying membrane fouling.

In this study, some key factors, for example, diluted ratio of effluents, the ratio of dark-photo bacteria, light intensity and light/dark cycle influencing hydrogen production by combining Clostridium butyricum and immobilized Rhodopseudomonas faecalis RLD-53 in batch culture, were investigated. Experimental results showed the photo-hydrogen yield decreased when increasing diluted ratio from 1:0.5 to 1:3, and it reached the maximum value of 4368 ml-H(2)/l-effluents at the ratio of 1:0.5. When the ratio of dark-photo bacteria was at 1:2, the hydrogen yield reached highest value of 4.946 mol-H(2)/mol-glucose and cumulative hydrogen volume was 5357 ml-H(2)/l-culture during the combination process. When the light intensity was at 10.25 W/m(2), the hydrogen volume of photo-fermentation and the combination process reached maximum value of 4260 ml-H(2)/l-effluents and 5892 ml-H(2)/l-culture, respectively. The aerobic granular sludge was cultivated by adding flocculant bacteria in sequencing batch airlift reactor (SBAR), the physical-chemical properties and biodegradation effect of granules were studied so as to investigate the influence of flocculant bacterium on characteristics of aerobic granular sludge. The results showed that flocculant bacterium could prompt granulation process, the aerobic granules could be successfully cultivated when the dose of flocculants was between 0-20 mL/L. The optimum dose was 10 mL/L, in this case the formation of aerobic granules needed 35d which was faster than that of 42 d in blank experiment, and SVI was around 40 mL/g, settling velocity reached 35.82 m/h, the COD, NH4+ -N,TP removal rate of mature granular sludge were 97.14%, 84.49% and 87.59% respectively. While no granules formed when the dose of flocculants was 30 mL/L, some white flocs existed in SBAR.

The effect of different carbon sources on the starting-up duration of sulfidogenic bioreactor and corresponding bacterial communities were investigated. The bioreactor starting-up duration was closely dependent on the complexity and availability of the carbon sources. 16S rRNA gene diversity of climax bacterial communities developed in each bioreactor had an increasing tendency for the carbon resource of lactate, acetate/ethanol, glucose and molasses. At the steady stage of bioreactors, the molasses-fed bacterial community pattern grouped with that of glucose-fed and acetate/ethanol-fed grouped with that of lactate-fed, both of which separated each other and departed further from the seed sludge. The present study concludes that utilization of simple carbon sources that are readily utilized by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) can not only increase the fraction of SRB and thus improve sulfate removal efficiency, but also shorten the starting-up duration., (Copyright 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in air and soil, measured by various research groups from around the world, were compiled and analyzed. Data for air were available from most regions, particularly in Europe and Asia. The average air concentrations (pg/m(3)) for SigmaPCB at background sites were 70 (5.1-170) for Europe, 79 (49-120) for North America, 66 (18-110) for South America, 270 (9-670) for Central America, 59 (17-150) for Asia, and 15 (13-17) for Australia. Data for soils exhibited better global coverage compared to air and were available from most regions. The average soil concentrations (pg/g dry weight) for SigmaPCB at background sites were 7500 (47-97 000) for Europe, 4300 (110-25 000) for North America, 1400 (61-9 500) for South America, 580 (120-2 900) for Asia, 390 (94-620) for Africa, and 280 (140-540) for Australia. Based on available studies where coupled measurements of PCBs in air and soil were made, the equilibrium status of PCBs in the air-soil system was investigated for China, West Midlands of the UK, central and southern Europe, and along a latitudinal transect from the south of the UK to the north of Norway. Differences were observed in plots of the soil-air equilibrium status (expressed as the soil-air fugacity fraction, ff) for different PCB homologues. This was explained by varying contributions from primary and secondary emissions-spatially and temporally. The net effect after several decades of PCB emissions to air, preferential transport of lower molecular weight PCBs through primary and secondary emission, and reductions in emissions to air in recent decades is that the lower molecular weight PCBs have achieved (and in some cases exceeded) soil-air equilibrium in many parts of the world. The exception is remote and background sites that are still dominated by primary sources.

Surface water and sediment samples concurrently collected in Songhua River in northeastern China from May to October 2006 were analyzed for Dechlorane Plus (DP), a chlorinated flame retardant. Samples were obtained from three main areas: SHR-Rul (rural area of Songhua River), SHR-Hrb (the section of the river within the city of Harbin), and Hrb (urban waters of Harbin). The majority of SHR-Rul water samples (85%) and SHR-Hrb water samples (73%) and 33% of urban water samples (Hrb) were below the detection limit. The mean water DP concentration in Hrb (0.55 +/- 0.81 ng L(-1)) was approximately 3 times greater than the levels measured in SHR-Hrb (0.17 +/- 0.38 ng L(-1)) and more than 15 times greater than the levels measured in SHR-Rul (0.03 +/- 0.07 ng L(-1)). DP detection rates in sediment samples were 50% (Hrb), 100% (SHR-Hrb), and 78% (SHR-Rul). The mean sediment DP concentration in SHR-Hrb (0.11 +/- 0.05 ng g(-1)) was approximately three times greater than that in SHR-Rul (0.04 +/- 0.05 ng g(-1)). These DP concentrations are likely attributable to local sources in urban areas rather than distant sources via long-range transport. The mean fractional abundance of the syn isomer of DP (f(syn)) was 0.34 +/- 0.10 in all water samples, a value indistinguishable from that of a commercial mixture (f(syn) = 0.35), indicating the source was local. The mean f(syn) value of 0.23 +/- 0.06 in all sediment samples suggested a stereoselective depletion of syn-DP relative to the anti-DP isomer in sediments. To our knowledge, this paper represents the first report of DP concentrations in Chinese water and sediments.

The optimization of culture condition for enhanced hydrogen production by Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum W16 was conducted using statistical experimental design and analysis. Plackett-Burman design was first used to screen the most important variables influencing hydrogen production, and subsequently central composite design was adopted to investigate the optimum value of the selected factors for achieving maximum hydrogen yield. Experimental results showed that xylose, phosphate buffer, and yeast extract had significant influence on hydrogen production and the maximum hydrogen yield of 2.39 mol/mol xylose was predicted when the concentrations of xylose, phosphate buffer, and yeast extract were 12.24 g/L, 0.170 M, and 4.11 g/L, respectively. The results were further verified by repeated experiments under optimal conditions. The characteristics and behavior of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), methane-producing bacteria (MPB) and denitrifying bacteria (DB) were investigated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based methods under the transitory sulfate absence or nitrate addition conditions in a sulfidogenic continuously stirred tank reactor. The bioreactor started-up feeding with 4000 mg l(-1) COD (lactate) and 2000 mg l(-1) sulfate (SO(4)(2-)). The sulfate removal efficiency reached 3.84 g l(-1)d(-1) when the activated sludge formed a stable bacterial community comprising of some members of genera Desulfobulbus, Desulfovibrio, Clostridium and Pseudomonas after 20 days' operation. And about 79% of reduced sulfate captured electrons from the oxidization of propionate. Sulfate absence influenced little on quantity and population structure of SRB and DB, while much on MPB and metabolic typing. And the acetate (up to 86% (w/w) of total end-products) in end-product profiles was replaced by the propionate (75% (w/w)). The addition of nitrate to sulfidogenic system suppressed the sulfidogenesis mainly by capturing the electron flow. These results suggested that sulfate absence or nitrate addition would not inhibit SRB permanently in a stable sulfidogenic community.

Based on the prototype experiment of treating herb wastewater by Up flow Anaerobic Sludge Bed and Anaerobic Filter reactor (UASBAF), an artificial neural network (ANN) model which adopts a back propagation algorithm with momentum and adaptive learning rate was established. And the effect of each parameter to the performance of the reactor was compared, using the method of partitioning connection weights (PCW). The result is pH values>influent of chemical oxygen demand (COD)>hydraulic retention time (HRT)>alkalinity. In addition, many strategies were proposed to optimize the working condition of the system. Adding some alkali to increase pH value when raising influent COD, was an effective way to avoid negative effect to system; low influent COD had a negative impact on the performance of the reactor; pH was suggested to be controlled more than 7.5 when the influent COD was increased over 6000mgL(-1). The best influent COD concentration was 6000-8000mgL(-1) when the conditions were that pH was 7.5, alkalinity was 2000mgL(-1) and HRT was 35-50h; HRT was suggested to be controlled more than 50h to maintain good performance of the reactor with high influent COD (8000-10,000mgL(-1)). These strategies provided an effective way of controlling UASBAF simply.

To reduce the amount of phosphate buffer currently used in Microbial Fuel Cell's (MFC's), we investigated the role of biological nitrification at the cathode in the absence of phosphate buffer. The addition of a nitrifying mixed consortia (NMC) to the cathode compartment and increasing ammonium concentration in the catholyte resulted in an increase of cell voltage from 0.3 V to 0.567 V (external resistance of 100 Omega) and a decrease of catholyte pH from 8.8 to 7.05. A large fraction of ammonium was oxidized to nitrite, as indicated by an increase of nitrate-nitrogen (NO(3)(-)-N). An MFC inoculated with an NMC and supplied with 94.2 mgN/l ammonium to the catholyte could generate a maximum power of 2.1+/-0.14 mW (10.94+/-0.73 W/m(3)). This compared favorably to an MFC supplied with either buffered or non-buffered solution. The buffer-free NMC inoculated cathodic chamber showed the smallest polarization resistance, suggesting that nitrification resulted in improved cathode performance. The improved performances of the phosphate buffer-free cathode and cell are positively related to biological nitrification, in which we suggest additional protons produced from ammonium oxidation facilitated electrochemical reduction of oxygen at cathode.

The start into the types of fermentation was carried out by pH adjustment from 4.2 to 6.0 in CSTR system. The process of transforming of hydrogen production and dynamic community of bacteria were studied. The results showed that with the organic load maintained at (33 +/- 1) kg/(m3 x d), there was no change in 10 d for the type of fermentation, the amount of hydrogen does not reduce in 8 d. After 15 d, the system was transformed from the ethanol-based type into butyric acid type and water alkalinity was from 250 mg/L to 2450 mg/L. The use of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) system was in response to the 3 groups of micro-organisms. It was found that in the process of transforming, Clostridium cluster XI increases and Clostridium cluster I and II decreases. Enterobacteriaceae always existed with no change. The microbial growth must be considered with hydrogen production capability. The average hydrogen production rate reached to 23.6 mol/(kg x d) with Clostridium cluster I and II dominated in fermentation reactor.

In order to increase the hydrogen yield from glucose, hydrogen production by immobilized Rhodopseudomonas faecalis RLD-53 using soluble metabolites from ethanol fermentation bacteria Ethanoligenens harbinense B49 was investigated. The soluble metabolites from dark-fermentation mainly were ethanol and acetate, which could be further utilized for photo-hydrogen production. Hydrogen production by B49 was noticeably affected by the glucose and phosphate buffer concentration. The maximum hydrogen yield (1.83 mol H(2)/mol glucose) was obtained at 9 g/l glucose. In addition, we found that the ratio of acetate/ethanol (A/E) increased with increasing phosphate buffer concentration, which is favorable to further photo-hydrogen production. The total hydrogen yield during dark- and photo-fermentation reached its maximum value (6.32 mol H(2)/mol glucose) using 9 g/l glucose, 30 mmol/l phosphate buffers and immobilized R. faecalis RLD-53. Results demonstrated that the combination of dark- and photo- fermentation was an effective and efficient process to improve hydrogen yield from a single substrate.

Soil column experiments were performed to investigate the behavior and characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during soil aquifer treatment (SAT), and to differentiate among the mechanisms responsible for the changes in the structural and functional properties of DOM during SAT. To determine the biological transformation of DOM, biodegradability tests using a biodegradation-column system were conducted. DOM was fractionated using XAD resins into 5 fractions: hydrophobic acid (HPO-A), hydrophobic neutral (HPO-N), transphilic acid (TPI-A), transphilic neutral (TPI-N) and hydrophilic fraction (HPI). Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was removed by 70% during SAT, and the sorption and anaerobic biodegradation in SAT led to a DOC reduction of 27.4%. The significant changes in fluorescence properties of DOM were observed during SAT. However, the sorption and anaerobic biodegradation in SAT seemed to have no significant effect on the chemical structure of fluorescing constituents in DOM. The DOM fractions exhibited different changes in Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra characteristics during SAT. Biodegradation resulted in the enrichment of aromatic structures and the decreased content of the oxygen-containing functional groups, such as CO and C-O, in DOM. On the other hand, the production of C-O and amide-2 functional groups occurred as a result of the sorption combined with anaerobic biodegradation in SAT.
