Expérience GANIL/SPIRAL; The quenching of the N = 20 shell gap in neutron-rich nuclei is investigated by studying the single-particle structure of 27Ne via neutron transfer using a 26Ne beam. Two low-lying negative-parity intruder states have been observed, the lowest of which is identified as J π = 3/2−, confirming earlier speculations. A level identified as 7/2− is observed higher in energy than the 3/2−, contrary to the ordering at β-stability and at an energy significantly different from the predictions of previous shell-model calculations. The measured energies and deduced spectroscopic factors are well reproduced in full (0,1)-¯hω 0s-0p-0d-1s-0f -1p calculations in which there is a significant ad hoc reduction (∼ 0.7 MeV) in the N = 20 shell gap.

The scattering processes of two mirror projectiles, the well bound 17 O (Sn = 4.143 MeV) and the loosely bound radioactive 17 F (Sp = 0.600 MeV), on the proton closed shell target 58 Ni were measured at several energies around the Coulomb barrier. The experimental data were analyzed within the framework of the optical model to extract the reaction cross section and to investigate the role played by direct reaction channels at near-barrier energies. The comparison shows a similar behaviour for the two A = 17 projectiles despite their very different binding energies and suggests a rather small effect of the 17 F breakup channel on the reaction dynamics.

International audience; Lifetimes of yrast states in neutron-rich Fe and Co isotopes were measured using the differential Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) and the differential decay curves methods. The nuclei of interest were populated in multi-nucleon transfer in inverse kinematics. The deduced B(E2) values are compared with large-scale shell-model calculations, leading to a better understanding of the mechanisms at the origin of the onset of collectivity in the region just below 68Ni.

Astrophysics::High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The transfer of neutrons onto Ne-24 has been measured using a reaccelerated radioactive beam of Ne-24 to study the (d, p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The unusual raising of the first 3/2(+) level in Ne-25 and its significance in terms of the migration of the neutron magic number from N = 20 to N = 16 is put on a firm footing by confirmation of this state's identity. The raised 3/2(+) level is observed simultaneously with the intruder negative parity 7/2(-) and 3/2(-) levels, providing evidence for the reduction in the N = 20 gap. The coincident gamma-ray decays allowed the assignment of spins as well as the transferred orbital angular momentum. The excitation energy of the 3/2(+) state shows that the established USD shell model breaks down well within the sd model space and requires a revised treatment of the proton-neutron monopole interaction., The authors acknowledge the excellent support provided by the technical staff of LPC and GANIL.

Expérience GANIL; International audience; Recent results from an experiment at GANIL, performed to investigate the main properties of fission-fragment yields and energy distributions in different fissioning nuclei as a function of the excitation energy, in a neutron-rich region of actinides, are presented. Transfer reactions in inverse kinematics between a 238U beam and a 12C target produced different actinides, within a range of excitation energy below 30 MeV. These fissioning nuclei are identified by detecting the target-like recoil, and their kinetic and excitation energy are determined from the reconstruction of the transfer reaction. The large-acceptance spectrometer VAMOS was used to identify the mass, atomic number and charge state of the fission fragments in flight. As a result, the characteristics of the fission-fragment isotopic distributions of a variety of neutron-rich actinides are observed for the first time over the complete range of fission fragments.

Proton removal measurements of the (e, e′p), (d,3He), and fast-beam knockout types show a consistent reduction of the spectroscopic factor when compared to shell model calculations [1-3]. The loss of single-particle strength is explained as the result of the short-range correlations between nucleons that are not accounted for in shell model calculations [1,3]. A similar reduction is seen with neutron knockout measurements, as would be expected because of isospin symmetry [1]. The interpretation of these results is complicated by the observation of a dependence of the reduction factor on the asymmetry of the proton and neutron Fermi energy surfaces ( S, with S 0 for near-stable nuclei) [4]. However, the observed trend is largely deduced from measurements of nucleon knockout from exotic nuclei with large values of | S|, and there are no analogous (e, e′n) data to which to compare. It is, therefore, important to supplement these results with data obtained through different reaction mechanisms. The TIARA, MUST2, VAMOS, and EXOGAM systems were employed at the GANIL/SPIRAL facility to provide complete kinematics measurements of the 2H(26Ne,t)25Ne and 1H(26Ne,d)25Ne reactions. The (d, t) and (p, d) reactions, measured in inverse kinematics, provide spectroscopic information on the neutron single-hole states around the new N = 16 shell closure found in the Ne region. The two measurements are designed to provide a comparison of results for the neutron-rich nucleus 26Ne ( S = −12.55 MeV) obtained from the fast-beam neutron knockout reaction [5] and the transfer mechanism studied here. The details of the experimental arrangement and the data analysis, including angular distributions and spectroscopic factors, will be presented.

Expérience GANIL : The present measurements were made using 238U beams from the CSS1 cyclotron of GANIL, at an energy of 1.31 GeV, incident on a 1 mg/cm2 thick, enriched 48Ca target, Spectrometer VAMOS, EXOGAM; Excited states of neutron-rich odd-Aand odd-odd Sc isotopes, populated in deep inelastic multinucleon transfer reactions, induced by a 238U beamon a thin 48Ca target, have been identified. A strong feeding of both yrast and nonyrast states in such a reaction is illustrated using a combination of a large efficiency spectrometer and a γ detector array. The structure of the populated states is interpreted in terms of the role of the valence proton and neutrons and compared to shell model calculations in the full pf shell.

Expérience GANIL, Détécteur MAYA; The 7H and 6H nuclear systems were investigated via transfer reactions with a 8He beam at 15.4A MeV impinging in a 12C target. The experimental setup allowed a complete reconstruction of the reaction kinematics with the MAYA gas detector, based on the active-target concept, where the carbon atoms of the filling isobutane played also the role of reaction target. The 7H resonance was observed at 0.57+0.42 −0.21 MeV above the 3H + 4n threshold with a width of 0.09+0.94 −0.06 MeV. The 6H system was formed at 2.91+0.85 −0.95 MeV with a resonance width of 1.52+1.77 −0.35 MeV. These results show the availability of nuclear structure information well outside the bounding limits, resulting in an extraordinary input to improve the present models and understanding of nuclear matter.

Accepetd for publication in Physical Review Letters; Angular distributions for 1n- and 2n-transfer are reported for the 6He + 65Cu system at Elab = 22.6 MeV. For the first time, triple coincidences between particles, neutrons and characteristic rays from the target-like residues were used to separate the contributions arising from 1n- and 2n-transfer. The differential cross sections for these channels, elastic scattering, and fusion were analyzed using a Coupled Reaction Channels approach. The large measured ratio of the 2n/1n cross section and the strong influence of 2n-transfer on other channels indicate that the di-neutron configuration of 6He plays a dominant role in the reaction mechanism.

Ne-27 has been investigated through the one neutron transfer reaction Ne-26(d,p)Ne-27 in inverse kinematics at 9.7 MeV/nucleon. The results support the existence of a low lying negative parity state in Ne-27 which is a signature of a reduced sd-fp shell gap in the N = 16 neutron rich region, at variance with stable nuclei. The preferred production mechanisms used to investigate the region of light nuclei, such as O, Ne and F, have been transfer reactions and, more recently, two-step fragmentation. Multi-nucleon transfer reactions can be an important complementary tool to populate this mass region. Deep-inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions have been largely used to study heavier systems, however no information is yet available regarding the effectiveness of these reaction mechanisms going towards lighter nuclei. In this proceeding we present promising preliminary results from an experiment performed with a radioactive $^{24}$Ne beam from SPIRAL facility at GANIL using the VAMOS spectrometer in conjunction with the EXOGAM array.

Expérience GANIL; The $\gamma$ spectroscopy of $^{25,27}$Ne and $^{26,27}$Na was studied from the reaction of $^{26}$Ne with a deuterium target in inverse kinematics at 9.7 MeV/nucleon. The selectivity of the (d,p),(d,t), and (d,n) transfer reactions provides new spectroscopic information on low-lying states. The validity of the sd shell-model space for these nuclei is discussed.

An experimental spectroscopic investigation of some neutron rich Mg and Al isotopes around the shell closure N=20 has been performed. The delayed neutron and $\gamma$ spectra, following the $\beta$-decay of $^{33}$Mg and $^{35}$Al have been measured using the delayed neutron detector array TONNERRE coupled with high efficiency EXOGAM clover detectors, a LEPS detector and eight low-energy neutron detectors. A detailed analysis of such spectra allows one to construct the level schemes of their daughters, $^{32,33)$Al and $^{34,35}$Si. The resulting spectroscopic information will provide stringent tests of large scale shell model calculations including np - nh excitations aimed at the understanding of the structural effects occurring in this region.

International audience; We have developed a new experimental setup based at the GANIL/SPIRAL facility in Caen, France to measure one-nucleon transfer reactions in inverse kinematics in order to study the evolution of the single particle structure of exotic nuclei. The setup couples together three state-of-the-art detection systems: the TIARA Si array, the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer VAMOS and the high-efficiency segmented Ge gamma-ray array EXOGAM. In a first experiment, the $^{24}$Ne(d,p)$^{25}$Ne reaction has been studied to probe the N=16 shell closure. Details of the setup, data analysis and preliminary results are presented.

The gamma spectroscopy of Ne-25,Ne-27 and Na-26,Na-27 was studied from the reaction of Ne-26 with a deuterium target in inverse kinematics at 9.7 MeV/nucleon. The selectivity of the (d,p),(d,t), and (d,n) transfer reactions provides new spectroscopic information on low-lying states. The validity of the sd shell-model space for these nuclei is discussed. The TIARA+VAMOS+EXOGAM set-up has recently been installed at GANIL to study the single-particle structure of exotic nuclei. The unique characteristics of the TIARA array, combined with the large acceptance spectrometer VAMOS and the high efficiency Germanium detector array EXOGAM, has allowed high-resolution measurements of transfer reactions in inverse kinematics using low intensity exotic beams. We will describe the experimental set-up, data analysis and preliminary results of the first experiments using a $^{24}$Ne beam from SPIRAL, concentrating in particular on the performance of VAMOS that has been used to detect the heavy fragments after the (d,p), (d,d) and (d,t) reactions.

A general experimental technique for high resolution studies of nucleon transfer reactions using radioactive beams is briefly described, together with the first new physics results that have been obtained with the new TIARA array. These first results from TIARA are for the reaction 24Ne(d,p)25Ne, studied in inverse kinematics with a pure radioactive beam of 100,000 pps from the SPIRAL facility at GANIL. The reaction probes the energies of neutron orbitals relevant to very neutron rich nuclei in this mass region and the results highlight the emergence of the N=16 magic number for neutrons and the associated disappearance of the N=20 neutron magic number for the very neutron rich neon isotopes., Comment: Proceedings of the Carpathian Summer School of Physics, Mamaia-Constanta, Romania, 13-24 June 2005

Matière Nucléaire - Commune avec NEX et ENL; International audience; Shape coexistence in the light krypton isotopes was studied in a series of experiments at GANIL using various experimental techniques. A new low-lying $0^+$ state, a so-called shape isomer, was found in delayed conversion-electron spectroscopy after fragmentation reactions. The systematics of such low-lying $0+^$ states suggests that the ground states of the isotopes $^{78}$Kr and $^{76}$Kr have prolate deformation, while states with prolate and oblate shape are practically degenerate and strongly mixed in $^{74}$Kr, and that the oblate configuration becomes the ground state in $^{72}$Kr. This scenario was tested in experiments performing low-energy Coulomb excitation of radioactive $^{76}$Kr and $^{74}$Kr beams from the SPIRAL facility. Both transitional and diagonal electromagnetic matrix elements were extracted from the observed $\gamma$-ray yields. The results find the prolate shape for the ground-state bands in $^{76}$Kr and $^{74}$Kr and an oblate deformation for the excited $2^{+}_{2}$ state in $^{74}$Kr, confirming the proposed scenario of shape coexistence

The decays of the three isomers of 131In and the total decay energies of the two isomers of 131Sn have been studied in high sensitivity experiments at the OSIRIS mass separator. The main purpose of the investigation was to determine the position of the neutron hole h11/2 state, since a previous determination appeared to be in error. The present results support a small separation of the d3/2 and h11/2 neutron hole states. The new value obtained from measurements of decay energies is 69±14 keV. A more precise value of 65.1 keV may be deduced from the level scheme of 131Sn obtained currently, however without firm support from coincidence data. This relatively low excitation energy of the h11/2 state is in agreement with systematics and in disagreement with the previous determination. A re-evaluation of the Qbeta values and isomer spacings of 131In has been made.

A new measurement of fusion cross-section for the system 4 He+64 Zn was performed at sub-barrier energy in order to cover the same energy region of previous measurements of 6 He+64 Zn. The fusion cross-section was obtained using an activation technique. From the comparison of the two excitation functions an enhancement of the fusion cross section was observed, at energy below the Coulomb barrier, in the reaction induced by 6 He in respect to the one induced by 4 He.

- Abstract
γ rays in the πν-1 nucleus 208Bi have been studied at the Gammasphere using deep-inelastic reactions induced by a 305-MeV 48Ca beam on a thick 208Pb target. Previously unknown yrast γ-ray cascades above the 10- millisecond isomer in 208Bi were identified in cross coincidence with known γ rays from complementary potassium products. Yrast and near-yrast levels up to 5.6 MeV in 208Bi have been located, and they are interpreted in light of earlier charged particle spectroscopy results, and with the help of shell model calculations.
