In cross-sectional studies among adolescents, estimation of age at menarche (AAM) is based on recall and status quo (SQ) data. Objectives: 1) To estimate median AAM using SQ data and to examine the differences with estimated values of AAM based on recall data. 2) To apply retrospective AAM data correction procedures used in earlier studies (AAMC1 and AAMC2) and to observe the differences with self-reported information (uncorrected or AAMUC) with respect to the estimation of early menarche (EM <12 years), intermediate menarche (IM, 12.0-13.9 years), and late menarche (LM ≥14 years). 3) To calculate SQ data-based maturation age (MA) and to observe the differences of MA among EM, IM, and LM girls. The method was cross-sectional and 9 to 17-year-old 536 girls (422 post-menarche) from Merida, Mexico participated in the study during 2008-2010. Probit analysis estimated median AAM (SQ data). The AAM correction was done using following methods. AAMC1 = number of days between birth and July 1 of the recalled year divided by 365.25. AAMC2 = half a year was systematically added to the recalled AAM. Results showed that mean value of age was 13.33 years and SQ data-based estimated median AAM was 11.34 years. Mean values of AAM (AAMUC = 11.57 years, AAMC1 = 11.53 years, AAMC2 = 12.21 years) were different (paired); however, had high correlation (p <0.05). The AAMC1 overestimated EM; AAMC2 underestimated EM, and overestimated LM (%). Mean value of MA of the girls was 15.28 ±2.15 years. This study investigated age differences in false memory for visual scenes and the effect of immediate recall on subsequent recognition. Eighty children (7–9 years), 74 adolescents (14–16 years), 92 young adults (19–26 years) and 82 older adults (50–80 years) studied four visual scenes and then took a recognition test after either a free-recall task or a filler task. Results showed an age-related decline in false recognition for visual scenes, but this trend was eliminated when participants were asked to free-recall before recognition. Prior recall decreased false recognition in children, but increased false recognition in older adults. Across the lifespan, adolescents had the loosest criterion, children had the lowest false recall, and prior recall increased true recognition in older adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on statistics from the World Nuclear Association, Kazakhstan has the highest uranium production in the world. Most of the uranium in the country is mined via in-situ leaching and the accurate classification of lithologic composition using electric logging data is economically crucial for this type of mining. In general, this classification is done manually, which is both inefficient and erroneous. Information technology tools, such as predictive analytics with Supervised Machine Learning (SML) algorithms and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) models, are nowadays widely used to automate geophysical processes, but little is known about their application for uranium mines. Previous experiments showed an ANN accuracy of about 60% in the task of lithological interpretation of logging data. To determine the upper limit of the accuracy of machine learning algorithms in such task and for indirect assessment of the experts' influence, a digital borehole model was developed. This made it possible to generate a complete set of data avoiding subjective expert assessments. This paper first reviews the advantages and disadvantages associated with both pre-coordination and post-coordination in classification. It then argues that we can have the advantages of both if we couple a post-coordinated (synthetic) approach to classification with a user interface that privileges the word order in search queries. Several other advantages of such an approach to classification and search are reviewed. It better captures the nature of a work (or object), addresses important issues with respect to social diversity, and facilitates user queries. It produces subject strings that resemble sentence fragments; this serves to clarify the meaning of terms within the subject string, and makes subject strings more comprehensible since humans typically think in sentences. These various benefits are then illustrated in the classification of works of music. It is shown that many important characteristics of works of music are best handled by such a system. Memory is a mental faculty that enables retention of information over time. There are three stages conceptualized in memory: Encoding, storage and recall. Information may be stored in short-term memory or long-term memory. Rehearsal techniques facilitate better retention and recall of information. Rehearsal can also be divided into two variants based on modality, namely vocal and sub vocal rehearsal. Some studies suggest that vocal rehearsal facilitate better retention and recall of information while some other studies claims subvocal rehearsal to be better. The current study tries to investigate the effect of the mode of rehearsal on recall in typically developing adults.40 neurotypical adults divided into two groups, designated as group 1 and group 2 were considered for the study. Group 1 consisted of 20 individuals in the age range of 18-25 years while the second group consisted of 20 individuals in the age range of 55-60 years. 96 picture stimuli were used which were divided into two sets of 48 each designated as set 1 and set 2. Participants were asked to rehearse set 1 through vocal mode and set 2 through subvocal mode. Each correct recall of picture was given a score of 1.Results revealed the performance did not vary as a function of the mode of rehearsal for first group. BACKGROUND: Telemedicine is a growing approach to providing health care but a relatively new model for cancer survivorship services. OBJECTIVES: This quantitative, quasiexperimental pilot research study compared patient satisfaction and recall of nutrition and exercise recommendations for in-person clinic visits versus telemedicine appointments. METHODS: Participants were stage 0–III cancer survivors who received their survivorship care plans from a nurse practitioner (NP). Following their clinic or telephone appointment, patients were sent a link to a survey that included demographic, patient satisfaction, and recall of diet and exercise recommendation questions. Fifty-two survivors completed the survey, of whom 38 had a clinic appointment and 14 had a telephone appointment. FINDINGS: There was no statistically significant difference between the mean patient satisfaction or recall of healthy weight, exercise, and nutrition recommendations between cancer survivors receiving their survivorship care plan by telephone versus a clinic appointment with an NP. Introduction: Music is increasingly used to improve cognition in clinical settings. However, it remains unclear whether its use as a mnemonic strategy is effective in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The present study aimed at determining whether a musical mnemonic might mitigate patients' learning of new verbal information and at exploring the effect of factors such as retention delay and emotional valence of the musical excerpt used. Method: 13 patients with AD and 26 healthy comparisons (HC) with a low musical expertise were included. They learned texts about everyday life themes that were either set to familiar instrumental music, which was positively- or negatively-valenced, or spoken only. Immediate and delayed recalls (after 10 min and 24 hours) were measured. Results: Main results showed that (i) HC demonstrated better verbal episodic memory performance than participants with AD; (ii) participants with AD encoded texts paired with positively-valenced music better than texts paired with negatively-valenced music; (iii) participants with AD recalled sung texts better than spoken texts (after 10 min and 24 hours), regardless of musical valence while HC displayed better recall for texts paired with positively-valenced music. Conclusions: Musical mnemonics may help people with AD learn verbal information that relates to their daily life, regardless the musical expertise of the patients. This result gives promising clinical insights showing that music processing is robust to brain damage in AD. Possible hypotheses explaining the effectiveness of musical mnemonics in AD regardless the musical valence are discussed (e.g., different processing between musical and spoken conditions; disappearance of the positivity bias and implications with respect to the underlying socio-emotional selectivity theory). Several studies have shown that giving brief descriptions for unfamiliar faces can lead to better episodic recognition memory relative to faces in a view-only (control) condition. More broadly, this finding is consistent with the benefits of elaboration during study on later recognition. Two articles have reported description benefits when participants did not know the study condition (control or description) for a trial until after a face was removed from view (Jones, Armstrong, Casey, Burson, & Memon, 2013; Jones, Robinson, & Steel, 2018). We conducted 3 experiments to shed additional light on the basis for this benefit, and the measures we used were old-new recognition and recognition confidence for the face and the proportion of test faces with recall for descriptive information. In Experiments 1 and 2 participants were explicitly instructed to describe each study face and to type the description or not (control condition). There was a numerical advantage for "old" responses, with the difference being significant in Experiment 1. A significant advantage for the typed condition occurred for "very sure old" and recall responses for both experiments. The advantage occurred across study repetition conditions in Experiment 1 and when participants were given plenty of time to generate a description in Experiment 2. Overall, these findings indicate that physically typing the description leads to a small advantage in recollection relative to a condition without physical production (i.e., a type of physical production effect). However, the production advantage was not obtained on any measure in Experiment 3 when the control condition required participants to type the number of words in the description. Prior research and theory has suggested that rumination plays a role in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), and rumination increases recall of negative autobiographical information in dysphoric individuals. Across two studies, we investigated whether rumination (versus distraction) differentially influences the recall of emotional words among dysphoric persons with and without a history of NSSI. Participants encoded unpleasant, neutral, and pleasant words and then were randomly assigned to either focus on the meaning and consequences of their emotions (i.e. rumination) or unrelated thoughts (i.e. distraction) before they were asked to recall encoded words. Across the two studies, we did not find a significant effect of rumination on memory for emotional words among dysphoric people with (Studies 1 and 2) or without a history of NSSI (Study 1). We did find that people were more likely to remember neutral words as opposed to unpleasant or pleasant words across studies, regardless of rumination condition. Together, results from these two well-powered studies provide fairly compelling evidence that rumination after encoding has little to no effect on recall for emotional words in people elevated on symptoms of depression or with NSSI history. This study aims to gain more insight into narrativity in the educational domain. Based on earlier research, we define three prototypical narrative elements (i.e., the presence of particularized events, an experiencing character, and a landscape of consciousness), and present an analytic model that illustrates how varying combinations of these elements occur in Dutch educational materials for Social Studies and Science. Using this model, we then analyze experimental texts from previous studies on the effects of narrativity on text comprehension and recall. We demonstrate that experimental narrative texts nearly always exhibit all prototypical narrative elements, while their expository counterparts also contain some narrative elements and thus are not purely expository. In addition, we show that no consistent patterns can be found in the results of the selected experimental studies, and that the data at hand therefore do not allow for strong conclusions about the effects of narrativity in educational texts. Episodic memory allows us to mentally travel through time. How does the brain convert a simple reminder cue into a full-blown memory of past events and experiences? In this review, we integrate recent developments in the cognitive neuroscience of human memory retrieval, pinpointing the neural chronometry underlying successful recall. Electrophysiological recordings suggest that sensory cues proceed into the medial temporal lobe within the first 500 ms. At this point, a hippocampal process sets in, geared toward internal pattern completion and coordination of cortical memory reinstatement between 500 and 1500 ms. We further highlight the dynamic principles governing the recall process, which include a reversal of perceptual information flows, temporal compression, and theta clocking. Simple reminders can bring back a host of vivid memories, experimentally epitomised in cued-recall paradigms. Electrophysiological recordings have elucidated the chronometry with which sensory cues are converted into retrieved memories. At 500 ms after cue onset, a pattern completion process begins in the hippocampus and triggers the reinstatement of the target memory in the neocortex. Cortical reinstatement unfolds between 500 and 1500 ms and gives rise to the subjective feeling of recollection. Heidelberg is among the top three Salmonella enterica serovars associated with human foodborne illness in Canada. Traditional culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing techniques can be time-consuming to identify Salmonella Heidelberg resistant to cephalosporins and fosfomycin. Rapid and accurate detection of such antibiotic-resistant Salmonella Heidelberg isolates is essential to adopt appropriate control measures. In this study, 15 Salmonella Heidelberg strains isolated from feces of Canadian broiler chickens were characterized by whole genome sequencing. Salmonella Heidelberg genomes had an average coverage of greater than 80-fold, an average of 4,761 protein-coding genes, and all belonged to multilocus sequence type ST15. Genome sequences were compared with genomes in the National Center for Biotechnology Information Pathogen Detection database (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pathogens/), including human outbreak isolates. The Canadian broiler isolates clustered with chicken isolates from the United States and an equine clinical isolate from Ontario, Canada. In agreement with their antimicrobial resistance phenotypes, several chromosomally encoded specific antimicrobial resistance genes including fosA7 and multidrug resistance efflux pump determinants were detected. An AmpC-like β-lactamase gene, blaCMY-2, linked with a quaternary ammonium compound resistance gene, sugE, on a replicon type IncI1 plasmid was detected in all 15 broiler Salmonella Heidelberg isolates. Of the 205,031 published Salmonella genomes screened in silico, 4,954 (2.4%) contained blaCMY-2, 8,143 (4.0%) contained fosA7, and 919 (0.4%) contained both resistance genes. The combination of both resistance genes (fosA7 and blaCMY-2) was detected in 64% of the Heidelberg genomes and in a small proportion of various other serovars. A PCR method was developed to detect Salmonella Heidelberg in pure culture and chicken feces based on specific primers targeting genes conferring fosfomycin (fosA7) and third-generation cephalosporin (blaCMY-2) resistance as well as the Salmonella-specific invA gene and the universal 16S rRNA genes. The PCR assay was specific and sensitive for blaCMY-2 and fosA7 harboring Salmonella Heidelberg. Recall of microbial-contaminated food products is an important intervention in preventing the transmission of foodborne illness. Here, we summarize the number and nature of foods recalled as a result of microbial contamination, classified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, for the period 1 January 2000 through 31 December 2017. A total of 10,432 food products were recalled from 2,094 recall events in Canada because of microbial contamination during this period. The meat, meat products and poultry category, followed by fishery and seafood products and nuts and edible seeds, contained the food products most commonly associated with microbial contamination. Most microbial-contaminated food products reported were recalled because of the presence bacterial pathogens. Salmonella contamination was responsible for the largest number of recall events, whereas Listeria monocytogenes contamination accounted for the greatest number of food products recalled because of microbial contamination. L. monocytogenes contamination was also most commonly associated with major food recall events, although records may be inflated because of an invested effort to prevent future L. monocytogenes outbreaks following a 2008 deli meat recall. This study examines the occurrence, frequency and duration of co-present phone use, also known as 'phubbing' behavior, during a dyadic conversation and its association with perceived conversation intimacy and distraction. Phubbing was measured by covertly observing students having a 10-min dyadic conversation (N = 100 dyads). Afterwards, participants were approached and asked to complete measures of how intimate they perceived the last 10 min of their conversation, and how distracted they perceived themselves and their conversation partners. Results reveal that phubbing occurred in 62 of the 100 observed conversations. In 30% of these 62 conversations, the phone screen was shared. When phone use occurred, the average frequency was 3.16 times per dyad (SD = 2.5), for a median duration of 99 seconds (SD = 225.2). Relatively few participants could correctly recall the occurrence of phone use during the past 10 min of their conversation. Inconsistent findings were found for the association between phubbing behavior and perceived distraction. The partner's phone use (but not one's own phone use), however, was associated with lower conversation intimacy. • 100 student dyads were covertly observed in a student restaurant. • In 62 dyads, at least one person used a phone during the conversation. • In 30% of conversations in which phones were used, screens were shared. • Recall of phone use was poor – both of oneself and of the partner. • If the partner used a phone, persons perceived less intimacy in the conversation. Four experiments investigated the mnemonic effects of generating survival situations. People were given target words and asked to generate survival situations involving that stimulus (e.g., DOOR: "I'm in a house that's on fire, and I can escape through the door"). No constraints were placed on the generation process, other than that it must be survival-related and refer to the target stimulus. Following a series of these generation trials people were given a surprise retention test for the target words. Across four experiments the survival generation task produced significantly better retention than several deep processing controls including: (a) a pleasantness-rating task, (b) an autobiographical retrieval task, and (c) a task that required people to generate unusual uses for the target items. These results demonstrate the power of survival processing in a new way and provide diagnostic information about the proximate mechanisms that may underlie survival processing advantages. It has recently been claimed that working memory (WM) storage is intrinsically domain-specific because the concurrent maintenance of an auditory and a visuospatial memory set did not involve any dual-task cost (Fougnie, Zughni, Godwin, & Marois, 2015). Using the same paradigm, we asked participants to concurrently maintain verbal auditory memory sets of 2, 4, or 6 letters along with visuospatial memory sets of 1, 3, or 5 dots in spatial locations. Whereas using the probe-recognition procedure used by Fougnie, Zughni, Godwin, and Marois (2015) replicated the absence of dual-task cost, a recall procedure revealed systematic interference between auditory-verbal and visuospatial WM. Increasing verbal WM load had a detrimental effect on the recall of visuospatial information, and vice versa, whether or not the task was performed under concurrent articulation. These between-domain interference effects proved to be non-negligible in magnitude when compared with within-domain effects in both the verbal (letters and digits) and visuospatial (spatial locations and movements) domains. The implication of these findings for our understanding of the structure and functioning of WM as well as the potential impact of the methods used to assess WM storage (i.e., recognition vs. recall) are discussed. Previous neuroimaging studies have identified various brain regions that are activated by music listening or recall. However, little is known about how these brain regions represent the time course and temporal features of music during listening and recall. Here we analyzed neural activity in different brain regions associated with music listening and recall using electrocorticography recordings obtained from 10 epilepsy patients of both genders implanted with subdural electrodes. Electrocorticography signals were recorded while subjects were listening to familiar instrumental music or recalling the same music pieces by imagery. During the onset phase (0-500 ms), music listening initiated cortical activity in high-gamma band in the temporal lobe and supramarginal gyrus, followed by the precentral gyrus and the inferior frontal gyrus. In contrast, during music recall, the high-gamma band activity first appeared in the inferior frontal gyrus and precentral gyrus, and then spread to the temporal lobe, showing a reversed temporal sequential order. During the sustained phase (after 500 ms), delta band and high-gamma band responses in the supramarginal gyrus, temporal and frontal lobes dynamically tracked the intensity envelope of the music during listening or recall with distinct temporal delays. During music listening, the neural tracking by the frontal lobe lagged behind that of the temporal lobe; whereas during music recall, the neural tracking by the frontal lobe preceded that of the temporal lobe. These findings demonstrate bottom-up and top-down processes in the cerebral cortex during music listening and recall and provide important insights into music processing by the human brain. Objectives Older adults experience associative memory deficits relative to younger adults (Old & Naveh-Benjamin, 2008). The aim of this study was to test the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on face-name associative memory in older and younger adults. Method Experimenters applied active (1.5 mA) or sham (0.1 mA) stimulation with the anode placed over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) during a face-name encoding task, and measured both cued recall and recognition performance. Participants completed memory tests immediately after stimulation and after a 24-h delay to examine both immediate and delayed stimulation effects on memory. Results Results showed improved face-name associative memory performance for both recall and recognition measures, but only for younger adults, whereas there was no difference between active and sham stimulation for older adults. For younger adults, stimulation-induced memory improvements persisted after a 24-h delay, suggesting delayed effects of tDCS after a consolidation period. Discussion Although effective in younger adults, these results suggest that older adults may be resistant to this intervention, at least under the stimulation parameters used in the current study. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of congruence (perceived and effective) and the level of visual attention towards sponsors on recall and purchase intention in sports sponsorship by applying neurophysiological measures. Design/methodology/approach: This study is part of neuromarketing research applied to sports. The experiment entails eye tracking with 111 men and 129 women (n=24) with 24 sports posters of three different disciplines (sailing, tennis and F1), varying the congruence, the number of sponsors and the position (2×2×2). The data are analyzed via analysis of covariance and regression using ordinary least squares. Findings: Brand recall is influenced by the number of sponsors present on the poster and by the time of fixation. Effective and perceived congruence covariance the purchase intention, but the full time of fixation on the sponsor does not. The latter only, purchase intention indirectly. Practical implications: The results enable managers to implement better poster designs and sponsors to have objective measures of sponsorship. Originality/value: There are few studies that analyze print media in sponsorship using neurophysiological techniques. Under the terms of the Recall of MPs Act 2015, there have been three recall petitions brought against MPs who have committed misconduct. The outcomes have been variable. The first petition failed to attract enough signatures to trigger a by‐election. The second led to the unseating of the MP, who declined the opportunity to stand in the subsequent by‐election. The third led to the removal of the MP and an unsuccessful candidature to regain his seat at the by‐election. Variation has not been confined to outcomes. There have been differences in how the legislation has been implemented—in terms of the ease of access of constituents to the recall petition. This article suggests that in the interests of fairness and transparency, there is a strong case for adjusting the legislation to ensure national standardisation of local implementation. Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) and Huntington's disease (HD) are two neurodegenerative diseases affecting frontal-striatal function and memory ability. Studies using the original California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) to examine recall and recognition abilities between these groups have produced mixed findings. Some found that individuals with HD demonstrate worse recall and recognition than those with PD, whereas others reported comparable performance. Objective: We utilized multiple indices of recall and recognition discriminability, provided by the second and third editions of the CVLT (CVLT-II and CVLT-3, respectively), that allow for a more thorough assessment of more nuanced aspects of verbal memory function. Methods: We examined differences between individuals with PD (n = 72) and those with HD (n = 77) on CVLT-II indices of recall discriminability (immediate, short delay free and cued, long delay free and cued) and recognition discriminability (total, source, semantic, and novel) using standardized scores while controlling for education and Dementia Rating Scale-2 scores. Results: The HD group performed significantly worse than the PD group on all measures of recall and recognition discriminability (ps < 0.05), and group differences were associated with large Cohen's d effect sizes. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that individuals with HD are more impaired than individuals with PD in more nuanced aspects of recall and recognition memory function. These CVLT indices yield more thorough assessments of recall and recognition memory function and have the potential to improve efforts to characterize and distinguish profiles of memory loss in different neurodegenerative populations, including PD and HD. Although some sound elements such as music or sound effects are commonly used in audiovisual messages, little research has been conducted to determine whether they guarantee better cognitive processing. The purpose of this study is to improve listeners' cognitive processing by determining the effectiveness of several sound elements in an audio message. We analyzed the capacity and the position in radio commercials of three orienting elements—appeals to the listener, music, and sound effects—to determine if and how they enhanced the listener's attention and recall. The findings indicated that the use of orienting elements significantly increased the level of attention and recall of the listeners, especially in the case of sound effects. Regarding the position of the orienting elements, the study showed they were used effectively when focused on the whole structure of the message, applying the so-called spark orientation effect. Relative to younger adults, older adults tend to perform more poorly on tests of both free recall and item recognition memory. The age difference in performance is typically larger for recall tasks relative to those involving recognition. However, there have been reports of comparable age-related differences in free recall and item recognition performance. Further, a differential performance cost does not necessarily mean that processes involved in recall are specifically affected by age. Here we present a meta-analysis of 36 articles reporting 89 direct comparisons of free recall and item recognition in younger and older groups of participants. Standardized effect sizes reveal that age differences are larger for recall tasks (Hedges' g = 0.89, 95% confidence intervals [0.75, 1.03]) than for recognition tasks (0.54, [0.37, 0.72]). Further, Brinley analyses of the data suggest that distinct functions are needed to relate younger and older performance for the two tasks. These functions differ in intercept pointing to a disproportionate age difference in recall relative to recognition. The Oxford WebQ is an online 24-hour dietary questionnaire that is appropriate for repeated administration in large-scale prospective studies, including the UK Biobank study and the Million Women Study. We compared the performance of the Oxford WebQ and a traditional interviewer-administered multiple-pass 24-hour dietary recall against biomarkers for protein, potassium, and total sugar intake and total energy expenditure estimated by accelerometry. We recruited 160 participants in London, United Kingdom, between 2014 and 2016 and measured their biomarker levels at 3 nonconsecutive time points. The measurement error model simultaneously compared all 3 methods. Attenuation factors for protein, potassium, total sugar, and total energy intakes estimated as the mean of 2 applications of the Oxford WebQ were 0.37, 0.42, 0.45, and 0.31, respectively, with performance improving incrementally for the mean of more measures. Correlation between the mean value from 2 Oxford WebQs and estimated true intakes, reflecting attenuation when intake is categorized or ranked, was 0.47, 0.39, 0.40, and 0.38, respectively, also improving with repeated administration. These correlations were similar to those of the more administratively burdensome interviewer-based recall. Using objective biomarkers as the standard, the Oxford WebQ performs well across key nutrients in comparison with more administratively burdensome interviewer-based 24-hour recalls. • We introduce Hover, a new concept and gesture user interface for smart TVs. • We evaluate user performance for recalling and pointing to loci in mid-air. • We discuss Hover in terms of interaction dimensions and qualities desirable for air pointing. We introduce "Hover," a new concept and interface for remote TV control based on air pointing in the users' personal, peripersonal, and extrapersonal space and implemented with mid-air spatial shortcuts to viewers' preferred TV channels distributed in the room with no representation other than that created in users' own imagination. Hover exploits memory and spatial orientation skills to enable fast access to TV channels with a mere pointing of the hand in mid-air. A controlled experiment with 17 participants and 9 mid-air loci corresponding to shortcuts to television channels revealed an average user recall rate of 80% and individual rates up to 100% for mid-air loci, pointing accuracy offsets of 10 cm, and 99% recognition rate for air pointing actions. We hope that Hover will inspire researchers and practitioners of user interfaces for smart TVs to consider spatial locations and mid-air as active elements to design new interactive experiences for home entertainment environments centered on the smart TV. Humans rapidly adapt reaching movements in response to perturbations (e.g., manipulations of movement dynamics or visual feedback). Following a break, when reexposed to the same perturbation, subjects demonstrate savings, a faster learning rate compared with the time course of initial training. Although this has been well studied, there are open questions on the extent early savings reflects the rapid recall of previous performance. To address this question, we examined how the properties of initial training (duration and final adaptive state) influence initial single-trial adaptation to force-field perturbations when training sessions were separated by 24 h. There were two main groups that were distinct based on the presence or absence of a washout period at the end of day 1 (with washout vs. without washout). We also varied the training duration on day 1 (15, 30, 90, or 160 training trials), resulting in 8 subgroups of subjects. We show that single-trial adaptation on day 2 scaled with training duration, even for similar asymptotic levels of learning on day 1 of training. Interestingly, the temporal force profile following the first perturbation on day 2 matched that at the end of day 1 for the longest training duration group that did not complete the washout. This correspondence persisted but was significantly lower for shorter training durations and the washout subject groups. Collectively, the results suggest that the adaptation observed very early in reexposure results from the rapid recall of the previously learned motor recalibration but is highly dependent on the initial training duration and final adaptive state. We examined early single-trial force-field adaptation on the second day of training and distinguished initial retention from recall. We found that the single-trial adaptation following the 24-h break matched that at the end of the first day, but this recall was modified by the training duration and final level of learning on the first day of training. Background: There are few publications on search strategies to identify diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) studies in lilacs. Objective: To translate and customise medline search strategies for use in lilacs and assess their retrieval of studies in Cochrane DTA systematic reviews. Method: We developed a six‐step process to translate and customise medline search strategies for use in lilacs (iAHx interface). We identified medline search strategies of published Cochrane DTA reviews, translated/customised them for use in lilacs, ran searches in lilacs and compared the retrieval results of our translated search strategy versus the one used in the published reviews. Results: Our lilacs search strategies translated/customised from the medline strategies retrieved studies in 70 Cochrane DTA reviews. Only 29 of these reviews stated that they had searched the lilacs database and 21 published their lilacs search strategies. Few had used the lilacs database search tools, none exploded the subject headings, and 86% used only English terms. Conclusion: Translating and tailoring a medline search strategy for the lilacs database resulted in the retrieval of DTA studies that would have been missed otherwise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerous studies indicate that an episodic specificity induction (ESI)--brief training in recollecting the details of a past experience--enhances performance on subsequent tasks that rely on episodic retrieval, including autobiographical memory, imagination, problem solving, and creative thinking. In 5 experiments, we examined whether these benefits of the ESI extend to reducing susceptibility to false memory, or whether they are accompanied by a cost in the form of increased susceptibility to false memory. To assess how ESI impacts false memory generation, we used the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm, a reliable procedure for generating false memories. When an ESI was administered after DRM list presentation and just before a free recall test, rates of false recall for critical lures were significantly enhanced relative to a control induction. These findings support the hypothesis that ESI operates to boost recollection of illusory episodic details associated with critical lures in the DRM, and suggest that constructive rather than reproductive episodic retrieval processes support the wide-ranging effects of ESI on a range of cognitive tasks. The rapid advancement of mobile computing devices and the ever-growing range of infotainment services they enable have cultivated high levels of media multitasking. Studies have considered the effects of this form of behaviour for cognitive control ability, with findings suggesting that chronic media multitasking is associated with reduced inhibitory control. In this study we advance knowledge in this domain by investigating differences in the attention distribution strategies of high and low media multitaskers (HMMs and LMMs) through a simple, twodimensional game. 1 063 university students completed a web-based survey concerning their media multitasking behaviour and played the 2D game. Contributing to the ecological validity of the study the game was played within the respondent's web-browser, as part of the survey, at a time and place (and on a computer) of their choosing. During gameplay one of two different banners, both irrelevant to the game, were displayed adjacent to the game. No instructions were provided in relation to the banners. Our analysis considered respondents' performance in the game in relation to both their media multitasking and the content of the banner displayed. Our findings suggest that while HMMs attend to distracting stimuli independent of their content or salience, LMMs are more selective. This selectivity enables improved primary task performance when distracting stimuli are deemed unimportant. Background: Diarrhoeal outcomes in children are often ascertained using caregiver-reported symptoms, which are subject to a variety of biases and methodological challenges. One source of bias is the time window used for reporting diarrhoeal illness and the ability of caregivers to accurately recall episodes in children.Methods: Diarrhoea period prevalence in children under five was determined using two similarly administered, nationally representative household surveys: Performance Monitoring and Accountability 2020 (PMA2020) (1-week recall, N = 14 603) and Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) (2-week recall, N = 66 717). Countries included in the analysis were the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya and Uganda. Diarrhoea period prevalence estimates were compared and water, sanitation and hygiene risk factors were analysed.Results: Childhood diarrhoea prevalence using 1-week recall (PMA2020) pooled across countries was 21.4% [95% confidence interval (CI): 19.9%, 22.9%] versus 16.0% using 2-week recall (DHS) (95% CI: 15.4%, 16.5%). In stratified analyses for all five countries, the number of diarrhoea cases detected was consistently higher using 1-week recall versus 2-week recall. The key risk factors identified in the PMA2020 data that were not associated with diarrhoeal episodes or were attenuated in the DHS data included: the main sanitation classifications for households, disposal method used for child faeces, number of household members and wealth quintiles.Conclusions: For nationally representative household surveys assessing childhood diarrhoea period prevalence, a 2-week recall period may underestimate diarrhoea prevalence compared with a 1-week period. • Drivers exposed to adverts on VMSs adhered to a detour instruction on the same VMS. • Despite adhering to the detour instruction 31% failed to recall this instruction. • Conscious attention might not be a prerequisite for compliance with road signs. • Repeated practice with VMS texts may improve drivers' ability to process their content. Road authorities struggle with the question whether variable message signs (VMSs) should exclusively be used for traffic management or could also be used to display traffic-irrelevant messages, such as mottos or commercial advertisements. The current study assesses behavioural responses to a critical route instruction displayed on the same VMS that previously displayed a variety of traffic-irrelevant messages. For this, thirty-two participants were divided between a control group and an experimental group (the advertisements group). In a driving simulator, all were familiarised with the same route by driving a VMS-equipped motorway nine times. For the advertisements group, up to drive 8, this VMS displayed various advertisements. Whereas for the control group it was blank. In the 9th drive, the VMS displayed a critical detour message for all participants. This critical route instruction – informing drivers to take the nearest exit – resulted in compliant driver behaviour in the advertisements group. In addition, they only reduced speed marginally to increase the time to process the VMS text. The control group, on the contrary, displayed a much sharper speed reduction; though the instruction only moderately altered motorway exit behaviour. What is more, the 31% (n = 4) of the advertisements group who complied with the critical route instruction subsequently failed to recall this message (recalling an advertisement instead). In conclusion, this study provides evidence that displaying traffic-irrelevant messages on VMSs might not interfere with traffic management; provided the format of said messages is in accordance with ergonomic VMS guidelines as used in this study. It is proposed that due to repeated exposure to various VMS texts, reading the sign has been practised to the extent that little to no conscious deliberation was required. As a result, recall of what was seen, proved to be an inadequate proxy for assessing driver behaviour. This study shows that conscious attention might not be a prerequisite for compliance. Furthermore, it suggests that continuous variability in objects in the traffic environment may become part of a subconscious monitoring process, as long as they have been sufficiently practised. • Taking pictures of HBRs is feasible and useful to assess their quality. • Most cards showed high quality for image, physical condition and legibility. • Most cards fulfill core content criteria yet design criteria were rarely satisfied. • Pictures of HBRs allow comparing recall with HBRs if both data sources are present. • Not all caregivers were able to accurately recall their child's vaccination status. Home-based records (HBRs) (also known as vaccination cards) and caregivers' recall are the main means to ascertain vaccination status; however, data on the quality of HBRs and the validity of recall vaccination data compared to HBRs is scarce. This manuscript presents results from two analyses related to HBRs, one on HBR pictures taken during a vaccination coverage survey, including an assessment of the HBR quality and legibility, and an evaluation of the agreement between caregivers' recall and the vaccination information in the HBRs. Using pictures from 500 randomly selected HBRs collected during the 2016 district-based immunization coverage evaluation survey in Lebanon, two independent researchers assessed the quality of the picture and then of the HBR itself against a pre-defined set of criteria. HBRs were classified into three types: private, public and all others. In addition, caregivers' recall was compared to data found in vaccination HBRs to assess measures of vaccination status agreement for 5713 children for whom both sources of data were available. Over 90% of the 500 HBR pictures reviewed were considered adequate to assess the HBR quality. In the sample, most cards were type 1 (41%), followed by type 2 (34%). Most HBRs met the set criteria for quality in terms of physical condition and legibility, while, among the 28 different types of cards, vaccination cards' content and design met a moderate level of quality. Concordance, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and the Kappa statistic showed diverse levels of agreement for vaccination status per vaccine dose between caregivers' recall and vaccination HBRs. This study illustrates that taking pictures of HBRs in a coverage survey is feasible and useful to conduct secondary analyses related to HBRs, such as assessing their quality and comparing recall with HBRs when both sources of data are available. Summary: Classic studies in cognition have demonstrated that the use of appropriate memory mnemonics can reliably increase recall performance. However, is the facilitative effect of mnemonics consistent across all individuals? As some mnemonics explicitly contain a large visuospatial component, does normal variance in visuospatial aptitudes predict the effectiveness of such strategy usage? To explore this question, participants who varied in visuospatial ability were asked to recall several lists of words, and either did or did not use a visuospatial mnemonic. Results indicated that effective mnemonic usage was directly dependent on participants' visuospatial ability, and those lower in visuospatial aptitudes actually produced lower recall performance when asked to use such a mnemonic. Similarly, those lower in visuospatial aptitude also reported that mnemonic usage made the task significantly more difficult. These findings suggest that individual differences in relevant cognitive abilities can influence the effectiveness of memory strategies commonly used to enhance recall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the true scope of recall as a mechanism of direct democracy. Recall is a mechanism of citizen control adopted by several Latin American countries after the third wave of democratization and in the context of a crisis of representation. Some regulations consider a campaign so that parties and their leaders may inform voters and politically influence their decision in the referendum (electoral mediation). Others give citizens complete freedom to elaborate their own opinions (self-government). A normative study is undertaken of the constitutions and national laws of the Latin American States that include this mechanism. The topic is how the therapeutic action in psychoanalysis is seen today and in the past. I support the idea that there is often an overvaluation of traditional views and interventions with ignorance of the latest conceptualizations and discoveries and in some cases a preference for new forms of conceptualization and intervention and excessive devaluation of the older ones. Key concepts in the therapeutic process such as recall, insight, interpretation, resistance, neutrality, and transference have been reformulated or ceased to be the center of action and have diminished their importance, yielding relevance to concepts such as countertransference, projective identification, and more recently to relation, enactment, emotions, interpersonal relationships outside the setting, and the patient's future. Psychoanalysis turned its attention from the patient to the analyst. We discuss the changes of traditional visions in contemporary visions and their implications in two texts. An emotional event can provoke somatic symptoms as a consequence of brain responses accompanying reactions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). ANS consists of the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system, and their anatomical and physiological mechanisms are different. The aim of this study was to evaluate the time lag between the responses of electroencephalography (EEG) and the parasympathetic nervous system (from electrocardiography; ECG) during emotional recall. EEG and ECG of healthy young adults were simultaneously recorded during the recall of emotionally pleasant and unpleasant audiovisual stimuli, with three repetitions. A time series (TS) of relative power spectra from EEG and a TS of power spectral values in high frequency (HF) of RR intervals in ECG were obtained using fast Fourier transform. The time lag between the TS of EEG and HF was calculated using wavelet cross‐correlation analysis. The results indicated that the cerebral cortex responded earlier than the parasympathetic nervous system to the pleasant stimuli. In contrast, the parasympathetic nervous system responded earlier than the cerebral cortex to the unpleasant stimuli. These events constantly appeared in both unfamiliar and familiar situations. European Union (EU) law regulates the manufacture, presentation, and sale of tobacco and related products in all member states. This study examined whether legislation non-compliant tobacco products and electronic cigarettes were available for sale in the European market. We queried the EU Rapid Information System for dangerous non-food products, covering 28 current and former EU member states and 3 associated countries, also known as Rapex, for non-compliant tobacco and related products reported between 2005 and 2022. During the operation of the Rapex system, 183 violations were reported (six on tobacco, three on traditional cigarettes, and 174 on e-cigarettes). Insufficient product safety information was found in 86% of the reports on e-cigarettes and 74% of the refills. Violations regarding the volume of the liquid container were observed in 26% of the e-cigarette reports and 20% of the refill reports. Approximately 15% of the reported e-cigarettes and 17% of refill liquids exceeded permissible nicotine levels. More serious standard violations were recorded for refills than for e-cigarettes. Approximately one-third of Rapex system countries submitted no notifications. E-cigarettes were the most frequently reported items in the European market of tobacco and non-tobacco nicotine products. The most common concerns were inadequate product safety information, incorrect liquid container volume, and excessive nicotine concentration. Identifying the most recognized legal infringements did not require laboratory tests and was based only on packaging and the manufacturer's declaration analysis. • Patient and breast care variables extracted from the EMR can predict the likelihood of a screening recall. • Younger women, women with a surgical history of breast cancer, women without prior mammograms, and women without a recent prior screening recall were more likely to be recommended for a screening recall. • Following the feasibility of our model, future work can prospectively test the value of EMR based tools to predict screening recall. Tools to predict a screening mammogram recall at the time of scheduling could improve patient care. We extracted patient demographic and breast care history information within the electronic medical record (EMR) for women undergoing digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) to identify which factors were associated with a screening recall recommendation. In 2018, 21,543 women aged 40 years or greater who underwent screening DBT at our institution were identified. Demographic information and breast care factors were extracted automatically from the EMR. The primary outcome was a screening recall recommendation of BI-RADS 0. A multivariable logistic regression model was built and included age, race, ethnicity groups, family breast cancer history, personal breast cancer history, surgical breast cancer history, recall history, and days since last available screening mammogram. Multiple factors were associated with a recall on the multivariable model: history of breast cancer surgery (OR: 2.298, 95% CI: 1.854, 2.836); prior recall within the last five years (vs no prior, OR: 0.768, 95% CI: 0.687, 0.858); prior screening mammogram within 0–18 months (vs no prior, OR: 0.601, 95% CI: 0.520, 0.691), prior screening mammogram within 18–30 months (vs no prior, OR: 0.676, 95% CI: 0.520, 0.691); and age (normalized OR: 0.723, 95% CI: 0.690, 0.758). Determining patients' cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) preferences in the emergency department (ED) is common practice but the stability of these preferences and their recollection by patients has been questioned. Therefore, this study assessed the stability and recall of CPR preferences of older patients at and following ED discharge. This survey-based cohort study was conducted between February and September 2020 at three EDs in Denmark. It consecutively asked mentally competent patients aged 65 years or older who were admitted to hospital through the ED and then one and six months later "In your current state of health, do you wish that physicians should try to intervene if your heart stops beating?" Possible responses were confined to "definitely yes", "definitely no", "uncertain", and "prefer not to answer". In total, 3688 patients admitted to hospital via the ED patients were screened, 1766 were eligible and 491 (27.8%) were included: median age was 76 (IQR 71–82) years, and 257 (52.3%) were men. One third of patients who expressed definite yes or no preferences in ED had changed their preference at one month follow-up. Only 90 (27.4%) and 94 (35.7%) patients recalled their preferences at one and six months follow-up, respectively. In this study, one-in-three older ED patients who initially expressed definite resuscitation preferences had changed their minds at one month follow-up. The accuracy of retrospective ratings of pain intensity was examined in a sample of 72 men and 36 women undergoing rehabilitation following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructive surgery. Participants completed daily ratings of current, worst, and average pain intensity for the first 42 days of rehabilitation. Participants provided retrospective ratings of worst and average pain intensity twice for a 7-day period (on Days 7 and 21) and once for a 30-day period (on Day 30). Correlations between concurrent and retrospective pain ranged from .74 to .88. Retrospective pain ratings consistently overestimated concurrent pain ratings, but were generally not biased by current pain. International Patent Classification (IPC) was created for the purpose of sorting inventions and their documents into technical fields covering all areas of technology. Introduced in 1968, the IPC is used by all IP offices worldwide. IPC can be effective for searching patents worldwide under the condition that "each IP office provide IPC with the same quality." The authors conducted an international comparison on IPCs among IP offices, by analyzing patents by JPO, USPTO, EPO, CNIPA, and KIPO, which account for about 80% of the worldwide patent publications. The result shows especially that searching Chinese patents by IPC is difficult for the searchers/examiners in the United States and Japan, and vice versa. In the case that each IP office classifies patents by its own standard apart from other IP offices' standards, the important feature is lost in the process of classification of technical idea described in the patent. It means that even if IP offices share the common international language (like IPC) that everyone deeply comprehends, the key feature of the invention may be lost in translation into the common language. The structural and content features of the Ask search engine together with its assessment based on the three types of keyword, phrase and question queries run on information retrieval performance are identified in this article. This is an applied research run by adopting the survey and documentation methods. Two checklists were used to collect data: one for identifying the structural and content features and the other for recording the recall and precision ratios. The obtained data is then recorded to calculate the recall and precision. In total, 48 structural and 16 content features are identified. The findings indicate an average of 44.95 percent recall and of 31.54 percent precision in this search engine. This fact reveals that the Ask search engine performance is not appropriate. The number of people recalled to custody in England and Wales has increased in recent years. Improving successful re‐release by engaging people in an effective recall process would achieve better outcomes for prisons, probation, and the public. Analysing in‐depth accounts of seven men, recall was experienced as painful and damaging rather than rehabilitative, lacking in credibility and legitimacy, and as a process faced alone. Progression was inhibited by hopelessness and powerlessness. Some expressed motivation for the future, but others intended to disengage from supervision. Cognitive load theory has incorporated evolutionary perspectives to consider how biologically primary knowledge (such as physical movement and pointing), acquired through evolutionary processes, might support the acquisition of biologically secondary knowledge (such as reading or writing), requiring explicit teaching. Tracing (a physical movement) against a surface with the index finger may be one form of biologically primary knowledge that can enhance learning biologically secondary knowledge. We investigated whether tracing lesson materials (about the water cycle) presented on A4 pieces of paper in an initial phase, then on an A1 poster in a subsequent phase, would affect primary school students' reports of intrinsic versus extraneous cognitive load, as well as recall and transfer test performance. Students who traced while studying reported lower extraneous cognitive load than those who simply studied and scored higher on subsequent recall and transfer tests. This work is a transcript of the act of being a witness. By this expression, we mean to be found in the background of the life section where the verbal narratives of the everyday life of a life that is not ordinary, or the verbal narratives in a moment, which increases the value of existence with the thinking and speaking characteristics compared to all creatures, leaving behind the identity of the researcher. When individuals come together and form the plural, we see that they form a huge one paradoxically in every moment of the communication they establish with each other in the environment. We can call this unity a common cultural memory. In other words, people coming together on the ground of time and space are connected to each other as a result of their words and actions such as the rings of the chain for certain functions and purposes related to life; as well as focusing on the conceptual value of the word art, they also perform oral art as they come from their hearts and are cast from their languages without falling into the scope of definition. This gives us the understanding that ordinary everyday lives are not ordinary and that they can perform ores as art, which can reflect the whole / common cultural memory at any moment. In this regard, we have examined two examples of narratives that the two narrators quoted in an instant of their daily lives, within the framework of the reasons for the narrators to begin their narratives. Among the large volume of information existed in the more important fields such as diabetes, the evidence-based resources offer timely the information to the physicians who do not have enough time to study. While the selection of validated sources face challenges in the field of diabetes, this study compare the sources recovered from the evidence-based databases. The design of this research is cross-sectional, survey, descriptive and is an applied type. Preparing a list on clinical questions here was done as referring to the Diabetes Center in Semirom for 5 months. The following keywords were searched on databases: Up To Date, Clinical Key, Embase, Cochrane, Ovid, and PubMed Tool. The data were analyzed using the descriptive and inferential statistics in terms of tables, diagrams, chi-square test. The findings showed that both Ovid and Clinical Key databases recovered more relevant documents in contrast to other databases. According to the most relevant documents. According to the relevant and relatively relevant documents, Clinical Key, Embase, Ovid and Up To Date databases had the highest recall in contrast to the PubMed and Cochrane databases which possessed the lowest recall. According to the most relevant documents, the Ovid Database has the highest precision while the PubMed Database had the lowest precision. Among the databases, up to date had retrieved the relevant documents. Summary There is widespread belief in the legal system that alcohol impairs witness testimony. Nevertheless, most laboratory studies examining the effects of alcohol on witness testimony suggest that alcohol may affect the number of correct but not incorrect details recalled. However, it is difficult to draw conclusions because sample sizes, testing paradigms, and recall measures vary between individual studies. We conducted a meta‐analysis to address this issue. We found alcohol intoxication had a significant and moderate sized effect on the number of correct details recalled (g = 0.40). The effect of alcohol on the number of incorrect details recalled was not significant. Further, the effect of alcohol on the recall of correct details was significantly moderated by multiple factors like intoxication level, the retention interval length between encoding and recall, and the types of questions asked (i.e., free recall vs. cued recall). In this article we review the framework proposed in 1968 by Atkinson and Shiffrin. We discuss the prior context that led to its production, including the advent of cognitive and mathematical modeling, its principal concepts, the subsequent refinements and elaborations that followed, and the way that the framework influenced other researchers to test the ideas and, in some cases, propose alternatives. The present study was designed to examine the impact of exercise intensity and aerobic fitness on free recall, judgments of learning (JOLs), and metacognitive accuracy. In Experiment 1, 30 college students engaged in either (1) no exercise, (2) light exercise (55% of predicted maximal heart rate), or (3) moderate exercise (75% of predicted maximal heart rate) on three different days. In Experiment 2, 29 high-fit students (VO2 max ≥ 70th percentile) and 28 low-fit students (VO2 max ≤ 50th percentile) completed sedentary and light exercise conditions. In both experiments, free recall scores significantly increased in the exercise conditions compared with the sedentary condition, but JOL magnitude and metacognitive accuracy were largely unaffected. These results demonstrate that exercise can improve recall at both light and high intensities, and that the benefit can be obtained by individuals regardless of their fitness level. Abstract The current research tested the idea that monetary limit adherence is upregulated by informing players how much money and credits they lost gambling when their limit was reached. In Study 1, players (N = 124) at a local gambling venue gambled on a virtual Electronic Gaming Machine (EGM) with a pre-determined money limit. By way of a pop-up message, some players were informed when their limit had been reached, while other players received additional personalized behavioral feedback about how much money and credits they lost. Limit adherence did not vary by condition. Informatively, half of the participants could not recall the content of the pop-up message. In Study 2 (N = 109), the pop-up message was adjusted to remain on the EGM for 10 s. Additionally, players set their own money limit. Replicating Study 1, personalized behavioral feedback did not improve limit adherence. Again, approximately 50% of players in both conditions could not recall the content of the pop-up message. These results have implications for pop-up messages as a means to convey information to players of EGMs—many players do not read the content of pop-up messages, thus they may not be an effective means for conveying enhanced responsible gambling information.
