Nanorobotics offers an emerging frontier in biomedicine, holding the potential to revolutionize diagnostic and therapeutic applications through its unique capabilities in manipulating biological systems at the nanoscale. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted using IEEE Xplore and PubMed databases, resulting in the identification and analysis of a total of 414 papers. The studies were filtered to include only those that addressed both nanorobotics and direct medical applications. Our analysis traces the technology's evolution, highlighting its growing prominence in medicine as evidenced by the increasing number of publications over time. Applications ranged from targeted drug delivery and single-cell manipulation to minimally invasive surgery and biosensing. Despite the promise, limitations such as biocompatibility, precise control, and ethical concerns were also identified. This review aims to offer a thorough overview of the state of nanorobotics in medicine, drawing attention to current challenges and opportunities, and providing directions for future research in this rapidly advancing field.

Financial data is generally time series in essence and thus suffers from three fundamental issues: the mismatch in time resolution, the time-varying property of the distribution - nonstationarity, and causal factors that are important but unknown/unobserved. In this paper, we follow a causal perspective to systematically look into these three demons in finance. Specifically, we reexamine these issues in the context of causality, which gives rise to a novel and inspiring understanding of how the issues can be addressed. Following this perspective, we provide systematic solutions to these problems, which hopefully would serve as a foundation for future research in the area.

Adaptive intelligent educational systems are gaining popularity, offering personalized learning experiences to students based on their individual needs and styles. One crucial feature of such systems is real-time personalized feedback. However, identifying real-time learning processes impacting student performance remains challenging due to data volume constraints. Current research often relies on labor-intensive human observation, which is time-consuming and not scalable. To efficiently collect real-time data, an observation tool is essential. Qualitative/Mixed Method research explores participant experiences in education, social science, and healthcare, utilizing methods like focus groups and observations. However, these methods can be labor-intensive, particularly in maintaining observation time intervals. Existing tools lack comprehensive support for education-focused focus groups and observations. To address these issues, this paper introduces the Data Logging and Organizational Tool (DLOT), a flexible tool designed for qualitative studies with human observers. DLOT offers customizable time intervals, cross-platform compatibility, and data saving and sharing options. The tool empowers observers to log timestamped data and is available on GitHub. The DLOT was validated through two studies. The first study predicted students' affective states using real-time annotations collected via DLOT, observing 30 students in each class. The second study created multimodal datasets in a computer-enabled learning environment, observing 38 students individually. A successful usability test was conducted, offering a potential solution to challenges in real-time learning process identification and labor-intensive qualitative research observation.

Online learning and MOOCs have become increasingly popular in recent years, and the trend will continue, given the technology boom. There is a dire need to observe learners' behavior in these online courses, similar to what instructors do in a face-to-face classroom. Learners' strategies and activities become crucial to understanding their behavior. One major challenge in online courses is predicting and preventing dropout behavior. While several studies have tried to perform such analysis, there is still a shortage of studies that employ different data streams to understand and predict the drop rates. Moreover, studies rarely use a fully online team-based collaborative environment as their context. Thus, the current study employs an online longitudinal problem-based learning (PBL) collaborative robotics competition as the testbed. Through methodological triangulation, the study aims to predict dropout behavior via the contributions of Discourse discussion forum 'activities' of participating teams, along with a self-reported Online Learning Strategies Questionnaire (OSLQ). The study also uses Qualitative interviews to enhance the ground truth and results. The OSLQ data is collected from more than 4000 participants. Furthermore, the study seeks to establish the reliability of OSLQ to advance research within online environments. Various Machine Learning algorithms are applied to analyze the data. The findings demonstrate the reliability of OSLQ with our substantial sample size and reveal promising results for predicting the dropout rate in online competition.

Recent strides in low-latency spiking neural network (SNN) algorithms have drawn significant interest, particularly due to their event-driven computing nature and fast inference capability. One of the most efficient ways to construct a low-latency SNN is by converting a pre-trained, low-bit artificial neural network (ANN) into an SNN. However, this conversion process faces two main challenges: First, converting SNNs from low-bit ANNs can lead to ``occasional noise" -- the phenomenon where occasional spikes are generated in spiking neurons where they should not be -- during inference, which significantly lowers SNN accuracy. Second, although low-latency SNNs initially show fast improvements in accuracy with time steps, these accuracy growths soon plateau, resulting in their peak accuracy lagging behind both full-precision ANNs and traditional ``long-latency SNNs'' that prioritize precision over speed. In response to these two challenges, this paper introduces a novel technique named ``noise adaptor.'' Noise adaptor can model occasional noise during training and implicitly optimize SNN accuracy, particularly at high simulation times $T$. Our research utilizes the ResNet model for a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the noise adaptor on low-latency SNNs. The results demonstrate that our method outperforms the previously reported quant-ANN-to-SNN conversion technique. We achieved an accuracy of 95.95\% within 4 time steps on CIFAR-10 using ResNet-18, and an accuracy of 74.37\% within 64 time steps on ImageNet using ResNet-50. Remarkably, these results were obtained without resorting to any noise correction methods during SNN inference, such as negative spikes or two-stage SNN simulations. Our approach significantly boosts the peak accuracy of low-latency SNNs, bringing them on par with the accuracy of full-precision ANNs. Code will be open source.

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration recently published the first images of the supermassive black holes in the cores of the Messier 87 and Milky Way galaxies. These observations have provided a new means to study supermassive black holes and probe physical processes occurring in the strong-field regime. We review the prospects of future observations and theoretical studies of supermassive black hole systems with the next-generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT), which will greatly enhance the capabilities of the existing EHT array. These enhancements will open up several previously inaccessible avenues of investigation, thereby providing important new insights into the properties of supermassive black holes and their environments. We investigate the relationship between system identification and intervention design in dynamical systems. While previous research demonstrated how identifiable representation learning methods, such as Independent Component Analysis (ICA), can reveal cause-effect relationships, it relied on a passive perspective without considering how to collect data. Our work shows that in Gaussian Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems, the system parameters can be identified by introducing diverse intervention signals in a multi-environment setting. By harnessing appropriate diversity assumptions motivated by the ICA literature, our findings connect experiment design and representational identifiability in dynamical systems. We corroborate our findings on synthetic and (simulated) physical data. Additionally, we show that Hidden Markov Models, in general, and (Gaussian) LTI systems, in particular, fulfil a generalization of the Causal de Finetti theorem with continuous parameters., Comment: CLeaR2024 camera ready. As the complexities of processors keep increasing, the task of effectively verifying their integrity and security becomes ever more daunting. The intricate web of instructions, microarchitectural features, and interdependencies woven into modern processors pose a formidable challenge for even the most diligent verification and security engineers. To tackle this growing concern, recently, researchers have developed fuzzing techniques explicitly tailored for hardware processors. However, a prevailing issue with these hardware fuzzers is their heavy reliance on static strategies to make decisions in their algorithms. To address this problem, we develop a novel dynamic and adaptive decision-making framework, MABFuzz, that uses multi-armed bandit (MAB) algorithms to fuzz processors. MABFuzz is agnostic to, and hence, applicable to, any existing hardware fuzzer. In the process of designing MABFuzz, we encounter challenges related to the compatibility of MAB algorithms with fuzzers and maximizing their efficacy for fuzzing. We overcome these challenges by modifying the fuzzing process and tailoring MAB algorithms to accommodate special requirements for hardware fuzzing. We integrate three widely used MAB algorithms in a state-of-the-art hardware fuzzer and evaluate them on three popular RISC-V-based processors. Experimental results demonstrate the ability of MABFuzz to cover a broader spectrum of processors' intricate landscapes and doing so with remarkable efficiency. Adaptive live video streaming applications use a fixed predefined configuration for the bitrate ladder with constant framerate and encoding presets in a session. However, selecting optimized framerates and presets for every bitrate ladder representation can enhance perceptual quality, improve computational resource allocation, and thus, the streaming energy efficiency. In particular, low framerates for low-bitrate representations reduce compression artifacts and decrease encoding energy consumption. In addition, an optimized preset may lead to improved compression efficiency. To this light, this paper proposes a Content-adaptive Variable Framerate (CVFR) encoding scheme, which offers two modes of operation: ecological (ECO) and high-quality (HQ). CVFR-ECO optimizes for the highest encoding energy savings by predicting the optimized framerate for each representation in the bitrate ladder. CVFR-HQ takes it further by predicting each representation's optimized framerate-encoding preset pair using low-complexity discrete cosine transform energy-based spatial and temporal features for compression efficiency and sustainable storage. We demonstrate the advantage of CVFR using the x264 open-source video encoder. The results show that CVFR-ECO yields an average PSNR and VMAF increase of 0.02 dB and 2.50 points, respectively, for the same bitrate, compared to the fastest preset highest framerate encoding. CVFR-ECO also yields an average encoding and storage energy consumption reduction of 34.54% and 76.24%, considering a just noticeable difference (JND) of six VMAF points. In comparison, CVFR-HQ yields an average increase in PSNR and VMAF of 2.43 dB and 10.14 points, respectively, for the same bitrate. Finally, CVFR-HQ resulted in an average reduction in storage energy consumption of 83.18%, considering a JND of six VMAF points.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated superior performance in language understanding benchmarks. CALM, a popular approach, leverages linguistic priors of LLMs -- GPT-2 -- for action candidate recommendations to improve the performance in text games in Jericho without environment-provided actions. However, CALM adapts GPT-2 with annotated human gameplays and keeps the LLM fixed during the learning of the text based games. In this work, we explore and evaluate updating LLM used for candidate recommendation during the learning of the text based game as well to mitigate the reliance on the human annotated gameplays, which are costly to acquire. We observe that by updating the LLM during learning using carefully selected in-game transitions, we can reduce the dependency on using human annotated game plays for fine-tuning the LLMs. We conducted further analysis to study the transferability of the updated LLMs and observed that transferring in-game trained models to other games did not result in a consistent transfer.

Strong motivation for investing in quantum sensing arises from the need to investigate phenomena that are very weakly coupled to the matter and fields well described by the Standard Model. These can be related to the problems of dark matter, dark sectors not necessarily related to dark matter (for example sterile neutrinos), dark energy and gravity, fundamental constants, and problems with the Standard Model itself including the Strong CP problem in QCD. Resulting experimental needs typically involve the measurement of very low energy impulses or low power periodic signals that are normally buried under large backgrounds. With the emergence of multiple modern video codecs, streaming service providers are forced to encode, store, and transmit bitrate ladders of multiple codecs separately, consequently suffering from additional energy costs for encoding, storage, and transmission. To tackle this issue, we introduce an online energy-efficient Multi-Codec Bitrate ladder Estimation scheme (MCBE) for adaptive video streaming applications. In MCBE, quality representations within the bitrate ladder of new-generation codecs (e.g., High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), Alliance for Open Media Video 1 (AV1)) that lie below the predicted rate-distortion curve of the Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec are removed. Moreover, perceptual redundancy between representations of the bitrate ladders of the considered codecs is also minimized based on a Just Noticeable Difference (JND) threshold. Therefore, random forest-based models predict the VMAF score of bitrate ladder representations of each codec. In a live streaming session where all clients support the decoding of AVC, HEVC, and AV1, MCBE achieves impressive results, reducing cumulative encoding energy by 56.45%, storage energy usage by 94.99%, and transmission energy usage by 77.61% (considering a JND of six VMAF points). This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves. The primary objective of the workshop was to lay the groundwork for an international TVLBAI proto-collaboration. This collaboration aims to unite researchers from different institutions to strategize and secure funding for terrestrial large-scale AI projects. The ultimate goal is to create a roadmap detailing the design and technology choices for one or more km-scale detectors, which will be operational in the mid-2030s. The Target Wake Time (TWT) feature, introduced in Wi-Fi 6, was primarily meant as an advanced power save mechanism. However, it has some interesting applications in scheduling and resource allocation. TWT-based resource allocation can be used to improve the user experience for certain applications, e.g., VoIP, IoT, video streaming, etc. In this work, we analyze the packet arrival pattern for streaming traffic and develop a synthetic video streaming traffic generator that mimics real-world streaming traffic. We propose a two-stage approach where we calculate the TWT duty cycle in the first step. In the subsequent step, we determine the Multiplication Factor(MF), which jointly dictates the required TWT schedule for the synthetic traffic model. In most spray coating and deposition applications, the target surface may be initially dry but with continuous drop impact a thin layer of liquid film is formed on which further impingement occurs. An experimental study of the process of drop impact on a thin stagnant film of the same liquid and the subsequent drop-film interactions is carried out. The impacting drop results in either liquid deposition or it can cause prompt or delayed splash. Deposition occurs when the drop merges with the liquid film without generating secondary drops. Splash results in the production of secondary drops either at the instant of impact (prompt splash) or through a delayed break-up of the rim of the crown formed as a result of the impact (delayed splash). Experiments are conducted to characterize the phenomena using five different Newtonian liquids and by varying drop impact diameter and velocity. The liquids are chosen so as to cover a wide range of liquid properties (viscosity and surface tension). A high-speed digital camera is used to capture the drop impact dynamics. The threshold of splashing is found to be related to drop size, impact velocity, liquid properties and thin film thickness. Experimental analysis of the significance of inertial, viscous and capillary forces in determining the splash and no-splash (or deposition) boundary helps in establishing an empirical correlation for the same.
