Focusing on the U.S., this chapter discuss the economic aspects that accompany cancer spending in case of prevention, screening, and treatment. While these three facets are all important in promoting patient health and safety, screening and prevention have been shown to have much lower cost compared with cancer therapeutics or in eliminating the health hazards in low- and moderate-income housing in New York City. The distribution of healthcare funds, however, does not accurately reflect the differences in impact on survival and quality of life. Finally, by focusing on treatments, they critically discuss how the increasing use of robotic-assisted surgery–expensive for healthcare facilities–may not be to the benefit of patients.

Megaselia dilatimana Disney, 2006 and M. falloconsueta Disney, 2006 (Diptera, Phoridae), two species of scuttle flies previously only known from Afrotropical region, are reported for the first time from Peninsular Malaysia. These species were collected from July to September 2020 during surveys of saprophagous scuttle flies at selected locations in the states of Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Johor. The geographical distribution of these species is extended to the Oriental region and increases the number of species of Megaselia known from Peninsular Malaysia to 36.

Objective: To determine the most common autoimmune diseases (ADs) among Yemeni patients in Sana’a city. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in six health facilities in Sana’a city from January 2014 to July 2017. It prospectively recruited 131 patients with ADs and retrospectively included 1786 records of patients with ADs, totaling the sample size to 1917. Data about gender and age of prospective patients and as well as the gender, age and the type of AD from patients’ records were collected using a pre-designed data collection sheet. Sera from patients’ sera were investigated for autoantibodies to diagnose ADs using immunological techniques. Data were then analyzed and expressed using descriptive statistics. Results: The majority of approximately two-thirds of patients with ADs attending the health facilities or record-retrieved were females, with a mean age of 32.35 ± 13.72 years (range: 1–89). Approximately half of the patients had a single type of either systemic or organ-specific ADs, while less than 1% had concurrent ADs. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) were the most frequent systemic ADs, being higher among females than males with male:female ratios of 1:4, 1:6 and 1:7, respectively. On the other hand, autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), Graves’ disease, Hashimoto's disease and celiac disease (CD) were the most frequent organ-specific ADs. AIH was higher among males than females with a male:female ratio of 2:1, while Graves’ and Hashimoto's diseases and CD were higher among females with a male:female ratio of 1:2–1:5. The most frequent concurrence between ADs was between SLE and RA (55.6%) as well as AIH and AIG (16.7%), being higher among females than males with male:female ratios of 1:9 and 1:2, respectively. SLE and AIH were equally concurrent between males and females, while the concurrence of other types of ADs was observed among females only. Conclusions: AIH, RA and SLE are the most frequent ADs among Yemeni patients with a steady rise in the frequency of ADs over the period 2014-2017 in Sana'a city. Systemic and organ-specific ADs are comparably equal in distribution and concurrently present among approximately 1.0% of cases, with predominance among females compared to males. Population-based studies for the assessment of incidence/prevalence of ADs and the environmental factors associated with the trending increase in the prevalence of ADs in Yemen are issues for further studies. Hindu civilizationism is more than a century old phenomenon that has been steadily gaining strength. Its recent amalgam with populism has made it ascendant, popular, and mainstream in India. This paper explores how Hindu civilizationism is not only an essential part of the Hindutva and BJP’s narrative but also the mainstay of several government policies. The “other” of the BJP’s populist civilizationist rhetoric are primarily Muslims and Muslim civilization in India and the aim is to make India “vishwaguru” (world leader) again after 1200 years of colonialism. The evidence of this heady mixture of civilizationism and populism is numerous and ubiquitous. This paper analyzes topics such as Akhand Bharat, the golden age, denigrating Mughals, Hindutva pseudoscience, and Sanskrit promotion to highlight the evidence.

Populism and civilizationism have transformed the politics of many countries. Many scholars consider them the biggest challenges to democracy since the rise of fascism and communism in the first half of the last century. The close affinity between populism, civilizationism, and rightwing politics has also been analyzed and recognized in many countries from Turkey to India to the US. However, there are three areas that distinguish the appearance of civilizationism in Israel. First, in contrast to many other countries, civilizationism in Israel is not a new phenomenon. It has been an essential part of Israeli nationalism or Zionism since the early 20th century. Second, unlike many countries, Jewish civilizationism in Israel is an article of faith for all major Israeli political parties. It is not a slogan raised only by the rightwing, conservative part of the political spectrum. Finally, one observes an affinity between civilizationism and populism. Civilizational rhetoric is the mainstay of populist leaders, such as Trump, Erdogan, etc. In Israel, populism and civilizationism have no special relationship as civilizationism is mainstream politics. All politicians, populists and non-populists, have to pay homage to Jewish civilizationism; otherwise, they will not succeed. This paper analyzes the Israeli founding fathers’ statements, the Declaration of Independence, Israeli state symbols, the revival of the Hebrew language, the Law of Return, the first debate in the Knesset, and the more recent Nation-State Law to demonstrate how Jewish civilizationism is old, mainstream, and not exclusively populist.

Handling of agricultural residues is a major concern today, since they pose a serious threat to the environment. Pyrolysis is one among the different techniques explored across the globe towards the effective conversion of these crop residues into various useful products. In this work, the degradation behaviour of corn husk loaded with tin oxide nanoparticles and raw corn husk are characterized separately by employing thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). From the thermograms obtained, the energy required for facilitating the degradation process with the aid of the catalyst is found to be 98.48 kJ/mol. Further, the corn husk loaded with prepared tin oxide nanoparticles (0.1 g& 0.2 g) is subjected to pyrolytic degradation at different temperature ranges from 400 °C to 550 °C and compared with thermal pyrolysis. The biochar retained from the pyrolysis process is investigated for its efficacy as an energy storage material after coating them over graphite sheet. Electrochemical analysis reveals the fabricated SnO2/biochar nanocomposite have excellent energy storage characteristics (205 F/g at a scan rate of 10 mV/s) which was attributed to the presence of facile architecture with porous surface area. Multiphase fluids are common in many industries, such as oil and petrochemical, and volume fraction measurement of their phases is a vital subject. Hence, there are lots of scientists and researchers who have introduced many methods and equipment in this regard, for example, photon attenuation sensors, capacitance-based sensors, and so on. These approaches are non-invasive and for this reason, are very popular and widely used. In addition, nowadays, artificial neural networks (ANN) are very attractive in a lot of fields and this is because of their accuracy. Therefore, in this paper, to estimate volume proportion of a three-phase homogeneous fluid, a new system is proposed that contains an MLP ANN, standing for multilayer perceptron artificial neural network, a capacitance-based sensor, and a photon attenuation sensor. Through computational methods, capacities and mass attenuation coefficients are obtained, which act as inputs for the proposed network. All of these inputs were divided randomly in two main groups to train and test the presented model. To opt for a suitable network with the lowest rate of mean absolute error (MAE), a number of architectures with different factors were tested in MATLAB software R2023b. After receiving MAEs equal to 0.29, 1.60, and 1.67 for the water, gas, and oil phases, respectively, the network was chosen to be presented in the paper. Hence, based on outcomes, the proposed approach's novelty is being able to predict all phases of a homogeneous flow with very low error. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we report a systematic study on effect of film thickness and substrate temperature on structural and magnetic behaviour of Fe-Ga films with Cu buffer layer, deposited on Si and Si/SiO2 substrates at room and high substrate temperatures. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction studies reveal that all the films are crystalline with disordered alpha-Fe phase, which is BCC A2 phase. At 300 °C of substrate temperature, films deposited on Si/SiO2 substrate found to nucleate L12 phase from matrix of A2 phase, which is not seen in Si based films. Irrespective of substrate material, Fe-Ga films found to exist in dual phases at 500 °C substrate temperature. Lattice strains of the films were calculated from X-ray diffraction patterns, using Williamson-Hall method. From X- ray reflectivity analysis of all the films, film density, thickness and roughness of Fe-Ga layer and buffer layer were obtained after fitting the reflectivity data. Presence of an oxide layer is also evident from reflectivity fitting analysis. From magnetization studies it is clear that, all the films exhibited strong in-plane anisotropy. Saturation magnetization of films was found to vary with change in film density and oxide layer thickness of films. Saturation magnetization of films deposited on Si substrates found to decrease with decrease in film density. Coercivity of films found to vary with change in crystallite size, interface roughness and lattice strain of films. Films deposited on Si substrates are sensitive to strain with change in film thickness and films deposited on Si/SiO2 substrates are sensitive to strain with change in deposition temperature. Coercivity in films found to decrease with decrease in film roughness, increase in crystallite size and lowering the tensile lattice strain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wildfires pose a direct threat to the property, life, and well-being of the population of Montana, USA, and indirectly to their health through hazardous smoke and gases emitted into the atmosphere. Studies have shown that elevated levels of particulate matter cause impacts to human health ranging from early death, to neurological and immune diseases, to cancer. Although there is currently a network of ground-based air quality sensors (n = 20) in Montana, the geographically sparse network has large gaps and lacks the ability to make accurate predictions for air quality in many areas of the state. Using the random forest method, a predictive model was developed in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) environment to estimate PM2.5 concentrations using satellite-based aerosol optical depth (AOD), dewpoint temperature (DPT), relative humidity (RH), wind speed (WIND), wind direction (WDIR), pressure (PRES), and planetary-boundary-layer height (PBLH). The validity of the prediction model was evaluated using 10-fold cross validation with a R2 value of 0.572 and RMSE of 9.98 µg/m3. The corresponding R2 and RMSE values for 'held-out data' were 0.487 and 10.53 µg/m3. Using the validated prediction model, daily PM2.5 concentration maps (1 km-resolution) were estimated from 2012 to 2023 for the state of Montana. These concentration maps are accessible via an application developed using GEE. The product provides valuable insights into spatiotemporal trends of PM2.5 concentrations, which will be useful for communities to take appropriate mitigation strategies and minimize hazardous PM2.5 exposure. In the present report, we have studied the structural, microstructural, magnetic, exchange blas (EB) properties and magnetoresistance (MR) in Mn rich (Mn at. -50%) Mn50Ni50-xSnx (x = 10) shape memory Heusler alloy ribbons, prepared using the melt spinning method. These ribbons were found to exhibit a first order structural (i.e., martensitic) transition at around 205 K from the high temperature austenite to the low temperature martensite phase. The martensitic transition occurs at comparatively lower temperatures in these ribbons than in the same bulk alloy. Curie temperature of the austenite phase (TCA) is found to be larger i.e., around room temperature than that of bulk alloy. A significant EB field (HEB) of around 960 Oe has been observed at 2 K for these ribbons, which is found to be comparable to that reported for other Heusler systems. The presence of the EB effect in these ribbons is attributed to the coexistence of FM/AFM exchange interactions in the martensite phase. They are also found to show a maximum negative MR of around 12% near the martensitic transition, for 50 kOe field change. Investigation of DC magnetization, AC susceptibility measurements and the observation of training effect (i.e., characteristic feature of EB) strongly corroborates with the coexistence of FM/AFM exchange interactions in the martensite phase of these ribbons, which results in the large EB. Background Patients with early-stage non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have high survival rates, but patients often say they did not anticipate the effect of the surgery on their postsurgical quality of life (QoL). This study adds to the literature regarding patient and surgeon interactions and highlights the areas where the current approach is not providing good communication. Design Since its start in 2016, the Initiative for Early Lung Cancer Research on Treatment (IELCART), a prospective cohort study, has enrolled 543 patients who underwent surgery for stage I NSCLC within the Mount Sinai Health System. Presurgical patient and surgeon surveys were available for 314 patients, postsurgical surveys for 420, and both pre- and postsurgical surveys for 285. Results Of patients with presurgical surveys, 31.2% said that their surgeon recommended multiple types of treatment. Of patients with postsurgical surveys, 85.0% felt very well prepared and 11.4% moderately well prepared for their postsurgical recovery. The median Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy–Lung Cancer score and social support score of the patients who felt very well prepared was significantly higher than those moderately or not well prepared (24.0 v. 22.0, P < 0.001) and (5.0 [interquartile range: 4.7–5.0] v. 5.0 [IQR: 4.2–5.0], p = 0.015). Conclusions This study provides insight into the areas where surgeons are communicating well with their patients as well as the areas where patients still feel uninformed. Most surgeons feel that they prepare their patients well or very well for surgical recovery, whereas some patients still feel that their surgeons did not prepare them well for postsurgical recovery. Surgeons may want to spend additional time emphasizing postsurgical recovery and QoL with their patients or provide their patients with additional avenues to get their questions and concerns addressed. Highlights Pretreatment discussions could help surgeons understand patient priorities and patients understand the anticipated outcomes for their surgeries. There is an association between feeling prepared for surgery and higher quality of life and social support scores after adjustment for confounders. Despite these pretreatment discussions, patients still feel that they are not well prepared about what to expect during their postsurgical recovery.
