PERIPHERAL vision , *MULTIPLE scattering (Physics) , *MULTIPLE access protocols (Computer network protocols) , *VISUAL perception , *EYE tracking ,RESEARCH awards - Abstract
This document is the front matter of the Computer Graphics Forum journal, specifically for the Eurographics Symposium on Rendering 2024. It provides information about the conference, including the program co-chairs, conference chairs, and sponsors. It also lists the members of the International Programme Committee and the reviewers. The document concludes with a table of contents and an author index. In the journal, Ruth Rosenholtz, a Principal Research Scientist at NVIDIA, discusses the myths and truths about peripheral vision in human vision research. She explains that peripheral vision is not dominated by loss of acuity, but rather by vulnerability to clutter known as visual crowding. Despite the loss of information, humans rely on peripheral vision for various visual tasks. Niloy Mitra, who leads the Smart Geometry Processing group at University College London, talks about using classical representations to control pretrained generative models for image creation and editing. He explores the challenges and applications of this approach in the field of computer graphics. [Extracted from the article]

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures significantly impact athletes in terms of return to play and loss of long‐term quality of life. Before the onset of this study, understanding the mechanism of ACL injury was limited. Thus, the primary focus of this manuscript is to describe our multi‐faceted approach to uncovering the mechanism of noncontact ACL injury (NC‐ACLI) with the goal of developing preventive strategies. The initial qualitative analysis of ACL injury events revealed most (70%) injuries involve minimal to no contact and occurr during landing or deceleration maneuvers in team sports with a minor perturbation before the injury that may disrupt the neuromuscular system leading to poor body dynamics. A series of quantitative videotape studies demonstrated differences in leg and trunk positions at the time of NC‐ACLI in comparison to control subjects. Analysis of the faulty dynamics provoking NC‐ACLI, especially the flat‐footed landing component, supports the theory that an axial compressive force is the critical factor responsible for NC‐ACLI. Our magnetic resonance imaging study demonstrated the NC‐ACLI position was associated with a higher tibial slope, and joint contact occurring on the flat, anterior portion of the lateral femoral condyle versus the round, posterior aspect. Both anatomic conditions favor sliding (pivot shift) over rolling in the presence of an axial compressive force. Subsequent cadaveric studies supported axial compressive forces as the primary component of NC‐ACLI. Both a strong eccentric quadriceps contraction and knee abduction moments may increase the compressive force at the joint thereby lowering the axial threshold to injury. This manuscript summarizes the NC‐ACLI mechanism portion of the 2021 OREF Clinical Research Award. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FRAMES (Social sciences) , *RESEARCH grants , *SCIENCE awards , *CHILDREN'S books ,RESEARCH awards - Abstract
The seminal text on relational frame theory (RFT) was published 20 years ago and purported to offer a single overarching behavior‐analytic account of human language and cognition. In the years thereafter, an increasing number of empirical and conceptual articles, book chapters in edited volumes, and whole volumes devoted to the account emerged. In recent years, RFT has experienced a period of intense empirical and conceptual development, facilitated in part by a research grant awarded by the Flanders Science Foundation, under its Odysseus program. This research program aimed to advance and extend the RFT account beyond the rendition presented in the seminal Hayes et al. (2001) volume. The current article aims to provide an overview of this research program, the empirical work and concepts it gave rise to, and their implications for an RFT account of human symbolic language and cognition. Overall, therefore, the article provides an account of relatively recent developments in RFT that extend beyond the 2001 volume and thus will, we hope, inform future research and critiques of the theory going forward. HEALTH promotion , *GENDER identity , *RACE identity , *RACE discrimination ,RESEARCH awards - Abstract
Each year the editorial team of the American Journal of Health Promotion selects our "Best of the Year List" of health promotion studies from the prior year. This editorial features the Editor's Picks Awards, the Editor in Chief Awards, the Michael P. O'Donnell Award and the Dorothy Nyswander Award for the research and writing published in 2021 in this journal. Our criteria for selection includes: whether the study addresses a topic of timely importance in health promotion, the research question is clearly stated and the methodologies used are well executed; whether the paper is often cited and downloaded; if the study findings offer a unique contribution to the literature; and if the paper is well-written and enjoyable to read. Awardees in 2021 offered new insights into addressing discrimination against race or sexual identity, preferred sources of information about COVID-19 and the impact of community and workplace interventions on healthy lifestyles. This year's award winning research spans from character to culture relative to improving well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 2020 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research has been awarded to Professor John Haltiwanger. John Haltiwanger has made significant contributions to the field of entrepreneurship by improving our understanding of job creation and destruction, productivity growth, and the role of small- and medium-sized firms (SMEs) in economic development. He has played a major role in the careful development of large, longitudinal firm-level datasets, and introduced a novel and widely adopted measure of firm growth that addresses previous statistical biases. His work has influenced public policy and national statistical offices around the world. Plain English Summary: The winner of the 2020 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, John Haltiwanger, has pioneered research showing that it is mainly firm age, not size, that matters for job creation. Through analyzing the relationship between employment, growth, and firms, he has advanced our understanding of how the economy works. He has done this by building new datasets and introducing a new measure of firm growth, solving problems encountered with earlier techniques. His work has also broadened the policy debate on entrepreneurship and inspired people all around the world. From a policy perspective, John Haltiwanger has shown that it is difficult to justify targeted industrial and commercial policies, and if job creation is to be supported, politicians need to target young firms rather than small firms. These important findings from John Haltiwanger's pioneering work have been published in world-class leading academic and scientific journals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Applications for and receipt of external research grants are important indicators of scientific productivity, and ones that the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program is intended to support. Methods: We investigate the association between the receipt of support services from one CTSA-supported hub and investigator productivity as measured by individual investigator grant submissions and grant awards at a Research I public university over an 8-year period. Negative binomial regression models are used to evaluate associations between individual grant productivity (in 2017, 2018, and 2019) and receipt of support services during the preceding 2 years. Results: Controlling for prior levels of productivity, service receipt is found to be predictive of both grants submitted and grants awarded to investigators in each model examined. Analyses also found some evidence of faculty rank and race/ethnic differences in the effects of Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) service use on subsequent grant productivity. Conclusions: Further work is needed to understand the relationship between clinical and translational services and other measures of productivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RESEARCH grants , *INTERDISCIPLINARY research , *BASE pairs , *RESEARCH funding ,RESEARCH awards - Abstract
Interdisciplinary research is on the rise globally. Yet, several studies have shown that it often achieves lower impact compared to more specialized work, and is less likely to attract funding. Here, we seek to reconcile such evidence by analyzing 44,419 research grants awarded by the research councils in the UK. We find that researchers with an interdisciplinary funding track record dominate the network of academic collaborations, both in terms of centrality and knowledge brokerage, but such a competitive advantage does not translate into immediate return. Our results based on a matched pair analysis show that interdisciplinary researchers achieve lower impact with their publications in the short run; however, they eventually outperform their specialized counterparts in funding performance, both in terms of volume and value. These findings suggest that pursuing an interdisciplinary career may require perseverance to overcome extra challenges, but can pave the way for a more successful endeavor. While interdisciplinary research is a growing trend among scientists in all disciplines, recent evidence suggests such a career choice is usually penalized by lower citations and funding. Here, the authors look into research funding data from the UK research councils, and show that interdisciplinary researchers actually outperform monodisciplinary researchers in terms of long-term funding performance. COLLEGE teachers ,TEACHING awards ,RESEARCH awards ,MENTORING ,HIGHER education ,INSTRUCTIONAL innovations - Abstract
In this commentary I provide an overview of the national award program, the Australian Awards for University Teachers (AAUT), that has been running for 23 years. I argue that the benefits of the awards are widespread in higher education. They recognise and reward creativity and innovation, they have helped build a culture of collaboration and mentoring that extends across universities and states, and most of all they validate the importance of good quality teaching in universities, providing a recognition and promotion pathway to match that of research awards. The current federal government has made the decision not to fund the awards after 2021, a decision I believe is not only short-sighted but could be damaging for Australia in the global education market. I propose three possible options to continue support for this valuable award program and encourage senior academics and past award winners to work as a group and pursue replacement funding and a sustainable management model for this program. The AAUT awards have an integral role in promoting creativity and innovation in teaching and learning, as well as opening promotion pathways and collaborations across and between universities, and across and between disciplines.
