It discusses the advances in AI-assisted radar sensing applications and the challenges that hinder its adoption in this field. The special issue of the journal features nine papers that address these challenges and offer innovative ideas and experimental results. The papers cover a range of topics, including health monitoring, human activity recognition, voice identification, elderly care health monitoring, track-to-track association, signal pre-processing, traffic congestion alleviation, and target recognition. The authors express their gratitude to the contributors and reviewers and believe that the research presented will inspire further exploration and innovation in this field. The authors present multiple machine learning‐based methods for distinguishing maritime targets from sea clutter. The main goal for this classification framework is to aid future millimetre wave radar system design for marine autonomy. Availability of empirical data at this frequency range in the literature is scarce. The classification and anomaly detection techniques reported here use experimental data collected from three different field trials from three different millimetre wave radars. Two W‐band radars operating at 77 and 94 GHz and a G‐band radar operating at 207 GHz were used for the field trial data collection. The dataset encompasses eight classes including sea clutter returns. The other targets are boat, stand up paddleboard/kayak, swimmer, buoy, pallet, stationary solid object (i.e. rock) and sea lion. The Doppler signatures of the targets have been investigated to generate feature values. Five feature values have been extracted from Doppler spectra and four feature values from Doppler spectrograms. The features were trained on a supervised learning model for classification as well as an unsupervised model for anomaly detection. The supervised learning was performed for both multi‐class and 2‐class (sea clutter and target) classification. The classification based on spectrum features provided an 84.3% and 80.1% validation and test accuracy respectively for the multi‐class classification. For the spectrogram feature‐based learning, the validation and test accuracy for multi‐class increased to 93.3% and 88.7% respectively. For the 2‐class classification, the spectrum feature‐based training accuracies are 88.1% and 86.8%, whereas with the spectrogram feature‐based model, the values are 95% and 94.1% for validation and test accuracies respectively. A one class support vector machine was also applied to an unlabelled dataset for anomaly detection training, with 10% outlier data. Millimetre‐wave radar has been widely used in health monitoring and human activity recognition owing to its improved range resolution and operation in a variety of environmental conditions. With the MIMO antenna array, 4D radar is increasingly employed in autonomous driving, while its application in assisted living is recent and therefore the value added compared to the increase in signal processing and hardware requirements is still an open question. A model for 4D Time‐division multiplexing (TDM) multiple‐input‐multiple‐output (MIMO) frequency‐modulated Continuous wave radar is established using the human activities from the HDM05 motion capture dataset. The simulator produces an end‐to‐end simulation, including four human motions (jumping Jack, kick, punch, and walk), signal time of flight, noise, MIMO signal processing, and classification. Different pre‐processing and point cloud‐based methods are compared to obtain an average classification accuracy of 90% with PointNet. This study simulates a specific 4D TDM MIMO radar configuration to benchmark signal pre‐processing algorithms, which can also assist other researchers to generate range‐Doppler‐time (range‐Doppler time) point cloud data sets for human activities testing different radar configurations, array configurations, and activities saving valuable time in human resources and hardware development before prototyping to assess expected performances. Radar‐based human activity recognition is considered as a competitive solution for the elderly care health monitoring problem, compared to alternative techniques such as cameras and wearable devices. However, raw radar signals are often contaminated with noise, clutter, and other artifacts that significantly impact recognition performance, which highlights the importance of prepossessing techniques that enhance radar data quality and improve classification model accuracy. In this study, two different human activity classification models incorporated with pre‐processing techniques have been proposed. The authors introduce wavelet denoising methods into a cyclostationarity‐based classification model, resulting in a substantial improvement in classification accuracy. To address the limitations of conventional pre‐processing techniques, a deep neural network model called Double Phase Cascaded Denoising and Classification Network (DPDCNet) is proposed, which performs end‐to‐end signal‐level classification and achieves state‐of‐the‐art accuracy. The proposed models significantly reduce false detections and would enable robust activity monitoring for older individuals with radar signals, thereby bringing the system closer to a practical implementation for deployment. Building on previous radar‐based human activity recognition (HAR), we expand the micro‐Doppler signature to 6 domains and exploit each domain with a set of handcrafted features derived from the literature and our patents. An adaptive thresholding method to isolate the region of interest is employed, which is then applied in other domains. To reduce the computational burden and accelerate the convergence to an optimal solution for classification accuracy, a holistic approach to HAR optimisation is proposed using a surrogate model‐assisted differential evolutionary algorithm (SADEA‐I) to jointly optimise signal processing, adaptive thresholding and classification parameters for HAR. Two distinct classification models are evaluated with holistic optimisation: SADEA‐I with support vector machine classifiers (SVM) and SADEA‐I with AlexNet. They achieve an accuracy of 89.41% and 93.54%, respectively. This is an improvement of ∼11.3% for SVM and ∼2.7% for AlexNet when compared to the performance without SADEA‐I. The effectiveness of our holistic approach is validated using the University of Glasgow human radar signatures dataset. This proof of concept is significant for dimensionality reduction and computational efficiency when facing a multiplication of radar representation domains/feature spaces and transmitting/receiving channels that could be individually tuned in modern radar systems. The millimeter‐wave radar sensor is widely used for urban traffic surveillance because of its weather resistance and high detection accuracy. Methods such as fuzzy theory, pattern recognition, and artificial neural networks have been integrated into the research of traffic state discrimination. However, research on systematically describing the fusion of sensors and traffic state discrimination algorithms to alleviate urban road congestion is still lacking, especially based on millimeter‐wave radar. Thus, the authors propose an urban traffic congestion alleviation system framework. First, the design and deployment of the millimeter‐wave radar system, including waveforms, signal processing flow, and target tracking, are demonstrated to achieve vehicle information acquisition and output. Then, the appropriate traffic parameters are obtained by analysing traffic state influencing factors and the radar data characteristics. Finally, a traffic conditions identification algorithm combining spectral clustering and neural network algorithm is presented to realise road congestion level classification. The system is applied to real urban intersections rather than simulation or approximate real simulation. According to the current road congestion level, regulate the traffic light state to achieve road vehicle driving command. Experiments show that the proposed system can effectively reduce road congestion by 20% compared to the current fixed traffic light system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A wearable millimetre-wave radar antenna operating in 24.05–24.25 GHz for imaging applications in collision avoidance to assist visually impaired people is presented. Non-uniform excitation for the series end-fed 1 × 10 array antenna is optimized in simulation achieving a modified Dolph–Chebyshev distribution, which provides improved performance in terms of beam width, Side-lobe level and Gain. Commercial RO3003 and eco-friendly polypropylene (PP) are considered as substrates for comparison purposes, being the PP electromagnetically characterized for the first time at such high frequencies. Consistent agreement between simulation and measurement results is achieved for antenna prototypes on both dielectrics. The impedance matching bandwidth is analysed for the antenna on PP also under bent conditions. The overall size of the compact, low-cost, eco-friendly and flexible antenna on PP is 98.68 × 14.4 × 0.52 mm3 and, according to literature survey, it overcomes the state of the art on wearable radar antennas at 24 GHz. Surface currents obtained from the high-frequency surface-wave radars (HFSWRs) installed along the coast of Fujian Province are utilized to characterize submesoscale eddies in the southwestern Taiwan Strait from 29 January to 26 March 2013. The algorithm based on vector geometry (VG) has been applied to datasets and a total of 414 (161 anticyclonic and 253 cyclonic eddies) were obtained. Eddies with both rotations had a relatively short lifespan (≤3.7 h), and their radii were in the range of 5–22.5 km. Eddies with a lifespan of over 30 minutes were more likely to occur north of the Taiwan Strait shoals and move eastward or northeastward. The deviation of moving directions of eddies with a moving distance of more than 20 km was within 18°. Moreover, eddies could hardly hold their original forms with cyclones extending in the east-west and compressing in the north-south direction, and anticyclones were the opposite. The vorticity and strain rate were proportional to the square of the energy intensity (EI). This study shows that the array HFSWRs have a strong capability to observe short-lived submesoscale eddies. Clouds are an important component of weather systems and are difficult to effectively characterize using current climate models and estimation of radiative forcing. Due to the limitations in observational capabilities, it remains difficult to obtain high-spatiotemporal-resolution, continuous, and accurate observations of clouds. To overcome this issue, we propose a novel and practical combined retrieval method using millimeter-wave radar and lidar, which enables the microphysical properties of thin liquid water clouds, such as cloud droplet effective radius, number concentration, and liquid water content, to be retrieved. This method was utilized to analyze the clouds observed at the Shanghai World Expo Park and was validated through synchronous observations with a microwave radiometer. Furthermore, the most suitable extinction backscatter ratio was determined through sensitivity analysis. This study provides vertical distributions of cloud microphysical properties with a time resolution of 1 min and a spatial resolution of 30 m, demonstrating the scientific potential of this combined retrieval method. In this paper, we propose a method for extracting the structure of an indoor environment using radar. When using the radar in an indoor environment, ghost targets are observed through the multipath propagation of radio waves. The presence of these ghost targets obstructs accurate mapping in the indoor environment, consequently hindering the extraction of the indoor environment. Therefore, we propose a deep learning-based method that uses image-to-image translation to extract the structure of the indoor environment by removing ghost targets from the indoor environment map. In this paper, the proposed method employs a conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN), which includes a U-Net-based generator and a patch-generative adversarial network-based discriminator. By repeating the process of determining whether the structure of the generated indoor environment is real or fake, CGAN ultimately returns a structure similar to the real environment. First, we generate a map of the indoor environment using radar, which includes ghost targets. Next, the structure of the indoor environment is extracted from the map using the proposed method. Then, we compare the proposed method, which is based on the structural similarity index and structural content, with the k-nearest neighbors algorithm, Hough transform, and density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise-based environment extraction method. When comparing the methods, our proposed method offers the advantage of extracting a more accurate environment without requiring parameter adjustments, even when the environment is changed. Acquiring pulse signals of radar source is an essential component in implementing electronic support measures (ESM). The conventional signal detection or deinterleaving method are mainly applied in relatively simple environments. Currently, radar electronic reconnaissance signal processing capability is severely constrained by poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the interleaving of signals from various radar sources. This research develops a multi-layer particle swarm optimization (PSO) pulse extraction and deinterleaving technique to improve ESM's efficacy further. First, coherent accumulation of the received signals is performed using PSO to obtain higher SNR pulse. Second, the signals from this radar source are deinterleaved using the obtained pulse. Ultimately, the aforementioned procedures are combined into a multi-layer PSO architecture to capture radar source signals and deinterleaving them at low SNRs. Traditional radar detection methods heavily rely on the signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR); a variety of feature-based detection methods have been proposed, providing a new way for radar detection and the recognition of weak targets. Existing feature-based detection methods determine the presence or absence of a target based on whether the feature value is within the judgment region, generally focusing only on the distribution of features and making insufficient use of inter-feature chronological information. This paper uses the autoregressive (AR) model to model and predict the time sequence of radar echoes in the feature domain and takes the chronological information of historical frame features as the prior information to form new features for detection on this basis. A classification method for floating small targets based on the Doppler spectrum centroid sequence is proposed. By using the AR model to fit the Doppler spectrum centroid feature sequence of the target, the model coefficients are regarded as the secondary features for target identification. The measured data show that the correct classification and identification rate of this method for ship targets and floating small targets can reach over 92% by using 50 centroid features. The tropical forests in the Amazon store large amounts of carbon and are still considered a carbon sink. There is evidence that deforestation can turn a forest landscape into a carbon source due to land use and forest degradation. Deforestation causes fragmented forest landscapes. It is known from field experiments that forest dynamics at the edge of forest fragments are altered by changes in the microclimate and increased tree mortality ("edge effects"). However, it is unclear how this will affect large fragmented forest landscapes, and thus the entire Amazon region. The aim of this study is to investigate different forest attributes in edge and core forest areas at high resolution, and thus to identify the large-scale impacts of small-scale edge effects. Therefore, a well-established framework combining forest modelling and lidar-generated forest structure information was combined with radar-based forest cover data. Furthermore, forests were also analyzed at the landscape level to investigate changes between highly fragmented and less-fragmented landscapes. This study found that the aboveground biomass in forest edge areas is 27% lower than in forest core areas. In contrast, the net primary productivity is 13% higher in forest edge areas than in forest core areas. In the second step, whole fragmented landscapes were analyzed. Nearly 30% of all forest landscapes are highly fragmented, particularly in the regions of the Arc of Deforestation, on the edge of the Andes and on the Amazon river banks. Less-fragmented landscapes are mainly located in the central Amazon rainforest. The aboveground biomass is 28% lower in highly fragmented forest landscapes than in less-fragmented landscapes. The net primary productivity is 13% higher in highly fragmented forest landscapes than in less-fragmented forest landscapes. In summary, fragmentation of the Amazon rainforest has an impact on forest attributes such as biomass and productivity, with mostly negative effects on forest dynamics. If deforestation continues and the proportion of highly fragmented forest landscapes increase, the effect may be even more intense. By combining lidar, radar and forest modelling, this study shows that it is possible to map forest structure, and thus the degree of forest degradation, over a large area and derive more detailed information about the carbon dynamics of the Amazon region. With the development of millimeter-wave radar systems, substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) slot antennas have been widely used. This paper presents a computational approach for calculating the equivalent normalized admittance of slot in low sidelobe SIW longitudinal slot antennas. In contrast to the existing methods, this method takes into account the impact of the N-slots coupling on the admittance. Through this method, fitting functions for resonant length and conductance are obtained, which describe the relationship between the resonant length, resonant conductance, and offset of slots. Moreover, based on the two fitting functions, a low sidelobe SIW longitudinal slot linear antenna is designed for millimeter-wave radar applications at 77 GHz. This antenna consists of a transition from the standard WR-12 waveguide to the SIW and a set of radiating slots. The simulation results indicate an impedance bandwidth of 4.8% and a gain of 13.2 dBi. The sidelobe level in the H-plane is below −28 dB, which meets the desired specifications and confirms the accuracy of the presented method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gust fronts (GFs) belong to the boundary layer convergence system. A strong GF can cause serious wind disasters, so its automatic monitoring and identification are very helpful but difficult in daily meteorological operations. By collecting convective weather processes in Hubei, Jiangsu, and other regions of China, 1422 GFs from 106 S-band new-generation weather radar (CINRAD/SA) volume scan data are labeled as positive samples by means of human–computer interaction, and the same number of negative samples are randomly tagged from no GF radar data. A deep learning dataset including 2844 labels with a positive and negative sample ratio of 1:1 is constructed, and 80%, 10%, and 10% of the dataset are separated as training, validation, and test sets, respectively. Then, the training dataset is expanded to 273,120 samples by data augmentation technology. Since the height of a GF is generally less than 1.5 km, three deep-learning-based models are trained for GF automatic recognition according to the distance from the radars. Three models (M1, M2, M3) are trained with the data at a 0.5° elevation angle from 65 to 180 km away from the radars, at 0.5° and 1.5° angles from 40 to 65 km, and at 0.5°, 1.5°, and 2.4° angles within 40 km, respectively. The precision, confusion matrix, and its derived indicators including receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and the area under ROC (AUC) are used to evaluate the three models by the test set. The results show that the identification precisions of the models are 97.66% (M1), 90% (M2), and 90.43% (M3), respectively. All the hit rates are over 89%, the false positive rates are less than 11%, and the critical success indexes (CSIs) surpass 82%. In addition, all the optimal critical points on the ROC curves are close to (0, 1), and the AUC values are above 0.93. These results suggest that the three models can effectively achieve the automatic discrimination of GFs. Radar systems are a type of sensor that detects radio signals reflected from objects located a long distance from transmitters. For covering a longer range and a higher resolution in the operation of a radar, a high-frequency band and an array antenna are measures to take. Given a limited size to the antenna aperture in the front end of the radar, the choice of a millimeter-wave band leads to a denser layout for the array antenna and a higher antenna gain. Millimeter-wave signals tend to become attenuated faster by a larger loss of the covering material like the radome, implying this disadvantage offsets the advantage of high antenna directivity, compared to the C-band and X-band ones. As the radome is essential to the radar system to protect the array antenna from rain and dust, a metamaterial surface in the layer is suggested to meet multiple objectives. Firstly, the proposed electromagnetic structure is the protection layer for the source of radiation. Secondly, the metasurface does not disturb the millimeter-wave signal and makes its way through the cover layer to the air. This electromagnetically transparent surface transforms the phase distribution of the incident wave into the equal phase in the transmitted wave, resulting in an increased antenna gain. This is fabricated and assembled with the array antenna held in a 3D-printed jig with harnessing accessories. It is examined in view of S21 as the transfer coefficient between two ports of the VNA, having the antenna alone and with the metasurface. Additionally, the far-field test comes next to check the validity of the suggested structure and design. The bench test shows around a 7 dB increase in the transfer coefficient, and the anechoic chamber field test gives about a 5 dB improvement in antenna gain for a 24-band GHz array antenna. The use of radar technology for non-contact measurement of vital parameters is increasingly being examined in scientific studies. Based on a systematic literature search in the PubMed, German National Library, Austrian Library Network (Union Catalog), Swiss National Library and Common Library Network databases, the accuracy of heart rate and/or respiratory rate measurements by means of radar technology was analyzed. In 37% of the included studies on the measurement of the respiratory rate and in 48% of those on the measurement of the heart rate, the maximum deviation was 5%. For a tolerated deviation of 10%, the corresponding percentages were 85% and 87%, respectively. However, the quantitative comparability of the results available in the current literature is very limited due to a variety of variables. The elimination of the problem of confounding variables and the continuation of the tendency to focus on the algorithm applied will continue to constitute a central topic of radar-based vital parameter measurement. Promising fields of application of research can be found in particular in areas that require non-contact measurements. A reformed particle swarm optimization (RPSO)-based up-conversion mixer circuit is proposed for radar application in this paper. In practice, a non-optimized up-conversion mixer suffers from high power consumption, poor linearity, and conversion gain. Therefore, the RPSO algorithm is proposed to optimize the up-conversion mixer. The novelty of the proposed RPSO algorithm is it helps to solve the problem of local optima and premature convergence in traditional particle swarm optimization (TPSO). Furthermore, in the RPSO, a velocity position-based convergence (VPC) and wavelet mutation (WM) strategy are used to enhance RPSO's swarm diversity. Moreover, this work also features novel circuit configurations based on the two-fold transconductance path (TTP), a technique used to improve linearity. A differential common source (DCS) amplifier is included in the primary transconductance path (PTP) of the TTP. As for the subsidiary transconductance path (STP), the enhanced cross-quad transconductor (ECQT) is implemented within the TTP. A benchmark function verification is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the RPSO algorithm. The proposed RPSO has also been compared with other optimization algorithms such as the genetic algorithm (GA) and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). By using RPSO, the proposed optimized mixer achieves a conversion gain (CG) of 2.5 dB (measured). In this study, the proposed mixer achieves a 1 dB compression point (OP1dB) of 4.2 dBm with a high linearity. In the proposed mixer, the noise figure (NF) is approximately 3.1 dB. While the power dissipation of the optimized mixer is 3.24 mW. Additionally, the average time for RPSO to design an up-conversion mixer is 4.535 s. Summary: In order to ensure that the electromagnetic compatibility and mutual interference of multiple radar network systems meet the requirements, a 55‐W gallium nitride (GaN) high harmonics suppression (HSs) high power amplifier (HPA) microwave monolithic integrated circuit (MMIC) with an operating frequency of 5.1–6.3 GHz is designed for radar network system. An HSs method using self‐resonant capacitor integrated in the output matching network of HPA is proposed to improve the HSs characteristics. The measured results show that under the condition of 100‐μs pulse width and 10% duty cycle, the HSs are greater than 48 dBc while the output power is greater than 55 W, the power gain is 21 dB, and the power additional efficiency (PAE) is 54%, which is suitable for use in radar network system. In this paper, a fusion model based on convolution and self-attention with multi-subimage input model (CNN-SA-MS) is proposed to estimate significant wave height (SWH) from shipborne X-band radar images. The model takes multiple radar subimages as input simultaneously, which not only improves the accuracy of SWH inversion by including more information, but also avoids the restriction of selecting a single subimage in the upwind direction and dependence on external devices for wind data provision. Based on the characteristics of radar images and computational efficiency considerations, this paper selects three radar subimages as the input for the model. The comparison data from buoys and ECMWF are used for training and testing. After averaging the results of 64 radar images, the root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (CC) of the CNN-SA-MS model are 0.197 m and 0.903, respectively. The results show that the CNN-SA-MS model improves the accuracy and stability of SWH estimation compared to single-subimage CNN regression model. For the two time periods with significant discrepancies between radar data and ECMWF predictions, we introduce satellite altimeter information as a source of reference for evaluation. Summary: Given the significant impact of sleep on overall health, radar technology offers a promising, non‐invasive, and cost‐effective avenue for the early detection of sleep disorders, even prior to relying on polysomnography (PSG)‐based classification. In this study, we employed an attention‐based bidirectional long short‐term memory (Attention Bi‐LSTM) model to accurately predict sleep stages using 60 GHz frequency‐modulated continuous‐wave (FMCW) radar. Our dataset comprised 78 participants from an ongoing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) cohort, recruited between July 2021 and November 2022, who underwent overnight polysomnography alongside radar sensor monitoring. The dataset encompasses comprehensive polysomnography recordings, spanning both sleep and wakefulness states. The predictions achieved a Cohen's kappa coefficient of 0.746 and an overall accuracy of 85.2% in classifying wakefulness, rapid‐eye‐movement (REM) sleep, and non‐REM (NREM) sleep (N1 + N2 + N3). The results demonstrated that the models incorporating both Radar 1 and Radar 2 data consistently outperformed those using only Radar 1 data, indicating the potential benefits of utilising multiple radars for sleep stage classification. Although the performance of the models tended to decline with increasing OSA severity, the addition of Radar 2 data notably improved the classification accuracy. The precipitation types (convective, stratiform, and mixed precipitation) are related to different atmospheric processes. To understand the isotopic characteristics of different types of precipitation, we collected 121 intra-event precipitation samples in Lanzhou of China from June to October 2021. These precipitation events were divided into mixed precipitation and stratiform precipitation using radar images. In the mixed precipitation events, the δ18O values show a similar variation trend. In contrast, the δ18O values of stratiform precipitation events have no coherent trend and are associated to local meteorological factors. The slope and intercept of local meteoric water line indicate that stratiform precipitation is more susceptible to evaporation. Our results provide observational constraints for understanding of isotope variations in different types in mid-latitude semi-arid region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the rapid development of intelligent and connected vehicles, the experimental road test for the advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) is dramatically increasing around the world. Considering its high cost and hazardous situations, simulation test based on a dummy model is becoming a promising way for ADAS road test practice to reduce the experiment expanses. This study proposed a methodology for the evaluation of the performance of human and dummies with distinct designed materials based on the data extracted from the Doppler effect of millimeter-wave radar. Echo data of 8 different angles from 0 to 360 degrees, with the an interval of 45 degrees, at the same distance between the test object and the signal source is collected. Meanwhile, the echo energy is collected for correlation modeling and analysis among groups. By evaluating the performance of humans and dummies via statistical analysis, a close correlation was found which results verified the substitutability of the dummy for the ADAS experiment test. The correlation coefficient between human and dummies ranges from 0.75 to 0.93. The support vector machine (SVM) model was developed and fitted to predict the echo energy in diverse environments. The mean average error (MAE) is 5.42–11.42 in the training and testing datasets while root mean square error (RMSE) is 0.43–0.90. Smeared spectrum (SMSP) jamming is a deceptive jamming technique commonly used against linear frequency modulation (LFM) radar. This technique produces high-density false targets that resemble a comb shape after pulse compression processing, resulting in both deceiving and suppressing effects. In order to suppress jamming effectively, a new antijamming technique has been proposed that combines Lv's distribution (LVD) with biorthogonal Fourier transform (BFT). The main idea of this antijamming method is based on a three-step process: "parameter estimation—echo modulation—identification and suppression." The first step involves obtaining the delay and chirp rate of the jamming from the LVD matrix of the radar echo. Based on the estimated parameter information, a reference signal is designed to modulate the jamming into a complete chirp signal. In the second step, biorthogonal Fourier transform is used to distinguish between the target's echo and jamming based on the difference in the chirp rate. Finally, jamming is filtered using narrow-band filtering in the chirp rate domain, and the original echo is recovered by using biorthogonal inverse Fourier transform (IBFT). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves high accuracy in estimating jamming parameters and is capable of suppressing false targets under high jamming-to-signal ratio (JSR) conditions. This two‐part study presents a detailed analysis of (a) the vortex structure, (b) the inner core planetary boundary layer (PBL) wind profile, and (c) the overland surface winds of Typhoon Faxai (2019) during landfall observationally (Part I) and in high‐resolution Weather Research and Forecasting model simulations (Part II). Part I presents a comprehensive observational analysis of (a), (b), and (c) of Typhoon Faxai (2019) based on radar dual‐Doppler analysis and spatially dense surface wind observations over the Kanto region of Japan. An empirical model for the wind reduction factor F2 km$$ {F}_{2\;\mathrm{km}} $$ is proposed and validated with surface observations and radar velocity–azimuth display analyses at Narita and Haneda airports, both of which were affected by the passage of Faxai's inner core. Two distinct PBL jets associated with the inner rain band and the eyewall were observed over Narita Airport, which was located to the right of Faxai's track. Based on the empirical model of F2 km$$ {F}_{2\;\mathrm{km}} $$, it is found that the maximum surface wind speed observed at Narita Airport was caused by the peak of F2 km$$ {F}_{2\;\mathrm{km}} $$ due to a strong PBL jet associated with the eyewall located as close as ∼$$ \sim $$0.3 km from the ground. In addition, the wind swath analysis shows that a large area far inland on the right side of Faxai's track experienced strong surface 10‐min winds due to the combination of the passage of the eyewall PBL jet and the small surface roughness length around agricultural land such as paddy fields and farm fields. The accurate prediction of high‐impact weather systems using cloud‐resolving models is still a challenge among researchers. This study evaluates the consistency of the combination of the three‐dimensional variational technique within the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation assimilation system (GSI‐3DVAR) and nudging in the same modelling system on short‐range forecasts of three heavy rainfall events from the southwest monsoon season of 2021 over the Indian subcontinent. Three experiments have been conducted (i) control (CNTL): assimilated conventional and satellite observations; (ii) radar and lightning data assimilation (RLDA): assimilated radar reflectivity and lightning proxy reflectivity data along with all observations used in CNTL; and (iii) lightning data assimilation (LDA): same as RLDA but without the assimilation of radar data; particularly done to test the impact of assimilation of only lightning data. The model‐simulated rainfall is evaluated by using the Integrated Multi‐Satellite Retrievals (IMERG) for Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM IMERG) rainfall data. The intercomparison of LDA and RLDA for event 1 highlighted that both represent the convective regions reasonably better than CNTL, but RLDA outperforms LDA and thus further assimilation experiments are done with RLDA. RLDA provided reasonably accurate forecasts compared to CNTL, which is evident in the spatial distribution of rainfall and area‐averaged three‐hourly accumulated rainfall. Verification metrics for the three selected heavy rainfall events reveal that an optimal forecast performance (especially in the first six hours of free forecast) is obtained by the simulation with assimilation of radar and lightning data during the pre‐forecast period, through correcting the position and timing of convective centres. The probability of detection (POD) values are higher for light rainfall categories than for the heavy rain categories. POD values were higher in RLDA than CNTL throughout simulation for all three events. For all these three selected events, fractions skill scores (FSS) of RLDA are always better than CNTL with different neighbourhood sizes for different threshold values throughout the forecast period. NASA's Vapor In-cloud Profiling Radar (VIPR) is a tunable G-band radar designed for in-cloud and precipitation humidity remote sensing. VIPR estimates humidity using the differential absorption radar (DAR) technique. This technique exploits the difference between atmospheric attenuation at different frequencies ("on" and "off" an absorption line) and combines it with the ranging capabilities of the radar to estimate the absorbing gas concentration along the radar path. We analyze the VIPR humidity measurements during two NASA field campaigns: (1) the Investigation of Microphysics and Precipitation for Atlantic Coast-Threatening Snowstorms (IMPACTS) campaign, with the objective of studying wintertime snowstorms focusing on east coast cyclones; and (2) the Synergies Of Active optical and Active microwave Remote Sensing Experiment (SOA 2 RSE) campaign, which studied the synergy between DAR (VIPR) and differential absorption lidar (DIAL, the High altitude Lidar Observatory – HALO) measurements. We discuss a comparison with dropsondes launched during these campaigns as well as an intercomparison against the ERA5 reanalysis fields. Thus, this study serves as an additional evaluation of ERA5 lower tropospheric humidity fields. Overall, in-cloud and in-snowstorm comparisons suggest that ERA5 and VIPR agree within 20 % or better against the dropsondes. The exception is during SOA 2 RSE (i.e., in fair weather), where ERA5 exhibits up to a 50 % underestimation above 4 km. We also show a smooth transition in water vapor profiles between the in-cloud and clear-sky measurements obtained from VIPR and HALO respectively, which highlights the complementary nature of these two measurement techniques for future airborne and space-based missions. The Goddard Profiling Algorithm (GPROF) is used operationally for the retrieval of surface precipitation and hydrometeor profiles from the passive microwave (PMW) observations of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission. Recent updates have led to GPROF V7, which has entered operational use in May 2022. In parallel, development is underway to improve the retrieval by transitioning to a neural-network-based algorithm called GPROF-NN. This study validates retrievals of liquid precipitation over snow-free and non-mountainous surfaces from GPROF V7 and multiple configurations of GPROF-NN against ground-based radar measurements over the conterminous United States (CONUS) and the tropical Pacific. GPROF retrievals from the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) are validated over several years, and their ability to reproduce regional precipitation characteristics and effective resolution is assessed. Moreover, the retrieval accuracy for several other sensors of the constellation is evaluated. The validation of GPROF V7 indicates that the retrieval produces reliable estimates of liquid precipitation over the CONUS. During all four assessed years, annual mean precipitation is within 8 % of gauge-corrected radar measurements. Although biases of up to 25 % are observed over sub-regions of the CONUS and the tropical Pacific, the retrieval reliably reproduces each region's diurnal and seasonal precipitation characteristics. The effective resolution of GPROF V7 is found to be 51 km over the CONUS and 18 km over the tropical Pacific. GPROF V7 also produces robust precipitation estimates for the other sensors of the GPM constellation. The evaluation further shows that the GPROF-NN retrievals have the potential to significantly improve the GPM PMW precipitation retrievals. GPROF-NN 1D, the most basic neural network implementation of GPROF, improves the mean-squared error, mean absolute error, correlation and symmetric mean absolute percentage error of instantaneous precipitation estimates by about 20 % for GPROF GMI while the effective resolution is improved to 31 km over land and 15 km over oceans. The two GPROF-NN retrievals that are based on convolutional neural networks can further improve the accuracy up to the level of the combined radar–radiometer retrievals from the GPM core observatory. However, these retrievals are found to overfit on the viewing geometry at the center of the swath, reducing their overall accuracy to that of GPROF-NN 1D. For the other sensors of the constellation, the GPROF-NN retrievals produce larger biases than GPROF V7 and only GPROF-NN 3D achieves consistent improvements compared to GPROF V7 in terms of the other assessed error metrics. This points to shortcomings in the hydrometeor profiles or radiative transfer simulations used to generate the training data for the other sensors of the GPM constellation as a critical limitation for improving GPM PMW retrievals. Large hail events are typically infrequent, with significant time gaps between occurrences at specific locations. However, when these events do happen, they can cause rapid and substantial economic losses within a matter of minutes. Therefore, it is crucial to have the ability to accurately observe and understand hail phenomena to improve the mitigation of this impact. While in situ observations are accurate, they are limited in number for an individual storm. Weather radars, on the other hand, provide a larger observation footprint, but current radar-derived hail size estimates exhibit low accuracy due to horizontal advection of hailstones as they fall, the variability of hail size distributions (HSDs), complex scattering and attenuation, and mixed hydrometeor types. In this paper, we propose a new radar-derived hail product developed using a large dataset of hail damage insurance claims and radar observations. We use these datasets coupled with environmental information to calculate a hail damage estimate (HDE) using a deep neural network approach aiming to quantify hail impact, with a critical success index of 0.88 and a coefficient of determination against observed damage of 0.79. Furthermore, we compared HDE to a popular hail size product (MESH), allowing us to identify meteorological conditions that are associated with biases on MESH. Environments with relatively low specific humidity, high CAPE and CIN, low wind speeds aloft, and southerly winds at the ground are associated with a negative MESH bias, potentially due to differences in HSD, hail hardness, or mixed hydrometeors. In the application of Compressive Sensing (CS) theory for sidelobe suppression in Random Frequency and Pulse Repetition Interval Agile (RFPA) radar, the off−grid issues affect the performance of target parameter estimation in RFPA radar. Therefore, to address this issue, this paper presents an off−grid CS algorithm named Refinement and Generalized Double Pareto (GDP) distribution based on Sparse Bayesian Learning (RGDP−SBL) for RFPA radar that utilizes a coarse−to−fine grid refinement approach, allowing precise and cost−effective signal recovery while mitigating the impact of off−grid issues on target parameter estimation. To obtain a high-precision signal recovery, especially in scenarios involving closely spaced targets, the RGDP−SBL algorithm makes use of a three−level hierarchical prior model. Furthermore, the RGDP−SBL algorithm efficiently utilizes diagonal elements during the coarse search and exploits the convexity of the grid energy curve during the fine search, therefore significantly reducing computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the RGDP−SBL algorithm significantly improves signal recovery performance while maintaining low computational complexity in multiple scenarios for RFPA radar. The risk of oil spills in the Arctic is growing rapidly as anthropogenic activities increase due to climate-driven sea ice loss. Detecting and monitoring fuel spills in the marine environment is imperative for enacting an efficient response to mitigate the risk. Microwave radar systems can be used to address this issue; therefore, we examined the potential of C-band polarimetric radar for detecting diesel fuel in freezing seawater under windy environmental conditions. We present results from a mesocosm experiment, where we introduced diesel fuel to a seawater-filled cylindrical tub at the Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility (SERF), University of Manitoba. We characterized the temporal evolution of the diesel-contaminated seawater and sea ice by monitoring the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) and polarimetric parameters (i.e., copolarization ratio (Rco), cross-polarization ratio (Rxo), entropy (H), mean-alpha (α), conformity coefficient (μ), and copolarization correlation coefficient (ρco)) at 20° and 25° incidence angles. Three stages were identified, with notably different NRCS and polarimetric results, related to the thermophysical conditions. The transition from calm conditions to windy conditions was detected by the 25° incidence angle, whereas the transition from open water to sea ice was more apparent at 20°. The polarimetric analysis demonstrated that the conformity coefficient can have distinctive sensitivities to the presence of wind and sea ice at different incidence angles. The H versus α scatterplot showed that the range of distribution is dependent upon wind speed, incidence angle, and oil product. The findings of this study can be used to further improve the capability of existing and future C-band dual-polarization radar satellites or drone systems to detect and monitor potential diesel spills in the Arctic, particularly during the freeze-up season. Precipitation nowcasting is critical for areas such as agriculture, water resource management, urban drainage systems, transport and disaster preparedness. In recent years, methods such as convolutional recurrent neural networks (ConvRNN) in deep learning techniques have been used to solve this task. Despite the effective improvement in forecasting quality, there are still problems with blurred and distorted prediction images, as well as difficulties in effectively forecasting high echo regions. To solve the above problems, this article presents a spatio-temporal long–short-term memory network model in view of multi-scale context fusion and attention mechanisms. This method fully extracts the short-term context information of different scales of radar image through the multi-scale context fusion module. The attention module broadens the time perception domain of the prediction unit so that the model perceives more historical time dynamics. Using the Hong Kong region weather radar data as a sample, the results of the experimental comparative analysis show that the spatio-temporal long and short-term memory network in view of multi-scale context fusion and attention mechanism achieves better prediction performance. The non-stationary clutter of space-based early warning radar (SBEWR) is more serious than that of airborne early warning radar. This phenomenon is primarily attributed to the Earth's rotation and range ambiguity. The increase in clutter degrees of freedom (DOFs) and the significant widening of the clutter suppression notch are not conducive to moving target detection near main lobe clutter. This paper proposes an effective approach to suppress non-stationary clutter based on an interpulse multi-frequency mode for SBEWR. Using the orthogonality of the uniform stepping frequency signal, partial range ambiguity can be effectively suppressed, and the clutter DOFs will be reduced. Subsequently, joint pitch-azimuth-Doppler three-dimensional spacetime adaptive processing and slant range preprocessing are used to perform clutter suppression. This combination not only curtails the estimation error associated with the clutter covariance matrix but also enhances the overall detection capabilities of the system. Weather radar is a useful tool for monitoring and forecasting severe weather but has limited coverage due to beam blockage from mountainous terrain or other factors. To overcome this issue, an intelligent technology called "Echo Reconstruction UNet (ER-UNet)" is proposed in this study. It reconstructs radar composite reflectivity (CREF) using observations from Fengyun-4A geostationary satellites with broad coverage. In general, ER-UNet outperforms UNet in terms of root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), structural similarity index (SSIM), probability of detection (POD), false alarm rate (FAR), critical success index (CSI), and Heidke skill score (HSS). Additionally, ER-UNet provides the better reconstruction of CREF compared to the UNet model in terms of the intensity, location, and details of radar echoes (particularly, strong echoes). As a spatial–temporal sequence prediction task, radar echo extrapolation aims to predict radar echoes' future movement and intensity changes based on historical radar observations. Two urgent issues still need to be addressed in deep learning radar echo extrapolation models. First, the predicted radar echo sequences often exhibit echo-blurring phenomena. Second, over time, the output echo intensities from the model gradually weaken. In this paper, we propose a novel model called the MS-RadarFormer, a Transformer-based multi-scale deep learning model for radar echo extrapolation, to mitigate the two above issues. We introduce a multi-scale design in the encoder–decoder structure and a Spatial–Temporal Attention block to improve the precision of radar echoes and establish long-term dependencies of radar echo features. The model uses a non-autoregressive approach for echo prediction, avoiding accumulation errors during the recursive generation of future echoes. Compared to the baseline, our model shows an average improvement of 15.8% in the critical success index (CSI), an average decrease of 8.3% in the false alarm rate (FAR), and an average improvement of 16.2% in the Heidke skill score (HSS). Investigating the dynamic evolution process of the ocean and ionosphere in sudden sea conditions poses a challenging problem. To address this objective, this study utilizes actual data from high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) to analyze, validate, summarize, and characterize the echo properties of the ocean and ionosphere during the severe Typhoon Muifa. By employing the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) method, the HFSWR ocean and ionosphere echoes stimulated by typhoon-induced gravity waves are observed, and the joint gravity wave features of the ocean and ionosphere echoes at different time scales are extracted. Additionally, the phase-space reconstruction method is employed to characterize the dynamical evolution of the joint gravity wave features in higher-dimensional space. Furthermore, the chaotic dynamics behavior of the joint gravity wave features is analyzed using the largest Lyapunov exponents. By combining the gravity wave features with chaotic dynamics, this study introduces a method to characterize the joint gravity wave features. The extraction of joint gravity wave features in HFSWR echoes stimulated by typhoons, along with the construction of a chaotic characterization scheme for the gravity wave features, provides an innovative approach and a solid technical foundation for studying the ocean and ionosphere using HFSWR under sudden sea conditions. High frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) has been successfully developed for early warning, especially for vessel target detection. However, the system's performance is consistently constrained by external environmental noise, particularly directional noise, which presents a new problem for HFSWR. Anisotropic directional noise has complex behavior, and its noise level is generally increased by 10 to 15 dB compared to traditional noise floor level. Suppressing varying directional noise and exploring obscured targets are challenging tasks for HFSWR. In this paper, a novel algorithm based on angle-Doppler joint multi-eigenvector synthesis, which considers the angle-Doppler map of radar echoes, is adopted to analyze the characteristics of the directional noise. Given the measured data set, we first analyze the directional noise-spatial correlation. Then, an algorithm based on sliding main lobe cancellation (SL-MLC) based on a sliding single-notch space filter (SSNSF) is proposed to block target components and get training data that contains precise directional noise information. We describe a method to calibrate a Software-Defined Radar (SDRadar) system mounted on an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) with an ultra-wideband (UWB) waveform operated in the near-field region. Radar calibration is a prerequisite for using the full capabilities of the radar system to retrieve geophysical parameters accurately. We introduce a framework and process to calibrate the SDRadar with the UWB waveform in the 675 MHz–3 GHz range in the near-field region. Furthermore, we present the framework for computing the near-field radar cross section (RCS) of an external passive calibration target, a trihedral corner reflector (CR), using HFSS software and with consideration for specific antennas. The calibration performance was evaluated with various distances between the calibration target and radar antennas. The necessity for the knowledge of the near-field RCS to calibrate SDRadar was demonstrated, which sets this work apart from the standard method of using a trihedral CR for backscatter radar calibration. We were able to achieve approximately 0.5 dB accuracy when calibrating the SDRadar in the anechoic chamber using a trihedral CR. In outdoor field conditions, where the ground rough surface scattering effects are present, the calibration performance was lower, approximately 1.5 dB. A solution is proposed to overcome the ground effect by elevating the CR above the ground level, which enables applying time-gating around the CR echo, excluding the reflection from the ground. Cloud overlap, referring to distinct cloud layers occurring over the same location, is essential for accurately calculating the atmospheric radiation transfer in numerical models, which, in turn, enhances our ability to predict future climate change. In this study, we analyze multi-year cloud overlap properties observed from the Ka-band Zenith Radar (KAZR) at the Semi-Arid Climate and Environment Observatory of Lanzhou University's (SACOL) site. We conduct a series of statistical analyses and determine the suitable temporal-spatial resolution of 1 h with a 360 m scale for data analysis. Our findings show that the cloud overlap parameter and total cloud fraction are maximized during winter-spring and minimized in summer-autumn, and the extreme value of decorrelation length usually lags one or two seasons. Additionally, we find the cloud overlap assumption has distinct effects on the cloud fraction bias for different cloud types. The random overlap leads to the minimum bias of the cloud fraction for Low-Middle-High (LMH), Low-Middle (LM), and Middle-High (MH) clouds, while the maximum overlap is for Low (L), Middle (M), and High (H) clouds. We also incorporate observations from satellite-based active sensors, including CloudSat, Cloud-Aerosol Lidar, and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO), to refine our study area and specific cases by considering the total cloud fraction and sample size from different datasets. Our analysis reveals that the representativeness of random overlap strengthens and then weakens with increasing layer separations. The decorrelation length varies with the KAZR, CloudSat-CALIPSO, CloudSat, and CALIPSO datasets, measuring 1.43 km, 2.18 km, 2.58 km, and 1.11 km, respectively. For H, MH, and LMH clouds, the average cloud overlap parameter from CloudSat-CALIPSO aligns closely with KAZR. This paper deals with adaptive moving target detection for a forward scatter radar in complex Gaussian noise. The echoes received by the forward scatter radar include not only the noise and the possible target signals but also the direct signals. To suppress the direct signals and detect the target signals, Rao and Wald tests are derived in two cases: the secondary data which contain no target signal are available or not available. Different from monostatic radar, it is proved that the derived Rao and Wald detectors for the forward scatter radar have the same test statistics as the generalized likelihood ratio test-based detector in the complex Gaussian noise both when the secondary data are available or not available. Automatic fall detection plays a significant role in monitoring the health of senior citizens. In particular, millimeter-wave radar sensors are relevant for human pose recognition in an indoor environment due to their advantages of privacy protection, low hardware cost, and wide range of working conditions. However, low-quality point clouds from 4D radar diminish the reliability of fall detection. To improve the detection accuracy, conventional methods utilize more costly hardware. In this study, we propose a model that can provide high-quality three-dimensional point cloud images of the human body at a low cost. To improve the accuracy and effectiveness of fall detection, a system that extracts distribution features through small radar antenna arrays is developed. In autonomous vehicles, the LiDAR and radar sensors are indispensable components for measuring distances to objects. While deep-learning-based algorithms for LiDAR sensors have been extensively proposed, the same cannot be said for radar sensors. LiDAR and radar share the commonality of measuring distances, but they are used in different environments. LiDAR tends to produce less noisy data and provides precise distance measurements, but it is highly affected by environmental factors like rain and fog. In contrast, radar is less impacted by environmental conditions but tends to generate noisier data. To reduce noise in radar data and enhance radar data augmentation, we propose a LiDAR-to-Radar translation method with a voxel feature extraction module, leveraging the fact that both sensors acquire data in a point-based manner. Because of the translation of high-quality LiDAR data into radar data, this becomes achievable. Precipitation nowcasting in real-time is a challenging task that demands accurate and current data from multiple sources. Despite various approaches proposed by researchers to address this challenge, models such as the interaction-based dual attention LSTM (IDA-LSTM) face limitations, particularly in radar echo extrapolation. These limitations include higher computational costs and resource requirements. Moreover, the fixed kernel size across layers in these models restricts their ability to extract global features, focusing more on local representations. To address these issues, this study introduces an enhanced convolutional long short-term 2D (ConvLSTM2D) based architecture for precipitation nowcasting. The proposed approach includes time-distributed layers that enable parallel Conv2D operations on each image input, enabling effective analysis of spatial patterns. Following this, ConvLSTM2D is applied to capture spatiotemporal features, which improves the model's forecasting skills and computational efficacy. The performance evaluation employs a real-world weather dataset benchmarked against established techniques, with metrics including the Heidke skill score (HSS), critical success index (CSI), mean absolute error (MAE), and structural similarity index (SSIM). ConvLSTM2D demonstrates superior performance, achieving an HSS of 0.5493, a CSI of 0.5035, and an SSIM of 0.3847. Hand gesture recognition, which is one of the fields of human–computer interaction (HCI) research, extracts the user's pattern using sensors. Radio detection and ranging (RADAR) sensors are robust under severe environments and convenient to use for hand gestures. The existing studies mostly adopted continuous-wave (CW) radar, which only shows a good performance at a fixed distance, which is due to its limitation of not seeing the distance. This paper proposes a hand gesture recognition system that utilizes frequency-shift keying (FSK) radar, allowing for a recognition method that can work at the various distances between a radar sensor and a user. The proposed system adopts a convolutional neural network (CNN) model for the recognition. In recent years, X-band phase array dual polarization weather radar technology has matured. The cooperative networking data from X-band phase array dual polarization weather radar have many advantages compared with traditional methods, namely, high spatial and temporal resolution (approximately 70 seconds in one scan, 30 m in radial distance resolution), wide coverages that can compensate for the observation blind spots, and data fusion technology that is used in the observation overlap area to ensure that the observed precipitation data have spatial continuity. Based on the above radar systems, this study proposes an improved hail and lightning weather disaster rapid identification and early warning algorithm. The improved thunderstorm identification, tracking, analysis, and nowcasting (TITAN) algorithm is used to quickly identify three-dimensional strong convective storm cells. Large sample observation experiment data are used to invert the localized hail index (HDR) to identify the hail position. The fuzzy logic method is used to comprehensively determine the probability of lightning occurrence. The comparative analysis experiment shows that, compared with the live observation data from the ground-based automatic station, the hail and lightning disaster weather warning algorithm developed by this study can increase warning times by approximately 7 minutes over the traditional algorithm, and its critical success index (CSI), false alarm ratio (FAR) and omission alarm ratio (OAR) scores are better than those of the traditional method. The average root mean square error (ARMSE) for identifying hail and lightning locations by this improved method is also significantly better than that of traditional methods. We show that our method can provide probabilistic predictions that improve hail and lightning identification, improve the precision of early warning and support operational utility at higher resolutions and with greater lead times that traditional methods struggle to achieve. The process of excavating rock mass induces changes in the stress distribution within the slope, rendering it prone to deformation over a specific duration. The potential consequence of movements along the weak planes is the ultimate breakdown of the slope. Various monitoring techniques, including visual inspection, laser scanning, Lidar scanning, total stations, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), state-of-the-art radar scanning, and micro-seismic monitoring, are currently employed in mining environments to forecast slope failure and deformation rate. This article will discuss the need to implement a continuous slope monitoring system, including categorizing such systems and an overview of the current state of existing slope monitoring technologies. The paper also discusses the applications of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) in slope monitoring. The research proposes implementing a consistent and continuous slope monitoring strategy grounded on empirical data when planning big and deep opencast mines. Measurements of radar backscatter are sensitive to snow water equivalent (SWE) across a wide range of frequencies, motivating proposals for satellite missions to measure global distributions of SWE. However, radar backscatter measurements are also sensitive to snow stratigraphy, to microstructure, and to ground surface roughness, complicating SWE retrieval. A number of recent advances have created new tools and datasets with which to address the retrieval problem, including a parameterized relationship between SWE, microstructure, and radar backscatter, and methods to characterize ground surface scattering. Although many algorithms also introduce external (prior) information on SWE or snow microstructure, the precision of the prior datasets used must be high in some cases in order to achieve accurate SWE retrieval. We hypothesize that a time series of radar measurements can be used to solve this problem and demonstrate that SWE retrieval with acceptable error characteristics is achievable by using previous retrievals as priors for subsequent retrievals. We demonstrate the accuracy of three configurations of prior information: using a global SWE model, using the previously retrieved SWE, and using a weighted average of the model and the previous retrieval. We assess the robustness of the approach by quantifying the sensitivity of the SWE retrieval accuracy to SWE biases artificially introduced in the prior. We find that the retrieval with the weighted averaged prior demonstrates SWE accuracy better than 20 % and an error increase of only 3 % relative RMSE per 10 % change in prior bias; the algorithm is thus both accurate and robust. In this study, we investigate the synergy of elastic backscatter lidar, Ku-band radar, and submillimeter-wave radiometer measurements in the retrieval of ice from satellite observations. The synergy is analyzed through the generation of a large dataset of ice water content (IWC) profiles and simulated lidar, radar and radiometer observations. The characteristics of the instruments (frequencies, sensitivities, etc.) are set based on the expected characteristics of instruments of the Atmosphere Observing System (AOS) mission. A hold-out validation methodology is used to assess the accuracy of the IWC profiles retrieved from various combinations of observations from the three instruments. Specifically, the IWC and associated observations are randomly divided into two datasets, one for training and the other for evaluation. The training dataset is used to train the retrieval algorithm, while the evaluation dataset is used to assess the retrieval performance. The dataset of IWC profiles is derived from CloudSat reflectivity and CALIOP lidar observations. The retrieval of the ice water content IWC profiles from the computed observations is achieved in two steps. In the first step, a class, of 18 potential classes characterized by different vertical distribution of IWC, is estimated from the observations. The 18 classes are predetermined based on the k-means clustering algorithm. In the second step, the IWC profile is estimated using an ensemble Kalman smoother algorithm that uses the estimated class as a priori information. The results of the study show that the synergy of lidar, radar, and radiometer observations is significant in the retrieval of the IWC profiles. Nevertheless, it should be mentioned that this synergy was found under idealized conditions, and additional work might be required to materialize it in practice. The inclusion of the lidar backscatter observations in the retrieval process has a larger impact on the retrieval performance than the inclusion of the radar observations. As ice clouds have a significant impact on atmospheric radiative processes, this work is relevant to ongoing efforts to reduce uncertainties in climate analyses and projections. Radar profiling algorithms are widely used for precipitation‐induced path‐attenuation correction. In this study, we investigate the impact of the four well‐known profiling algorithms on the efficacy of quantitative precipitation estimation retrievals. The first method, named the "simple PhiDP‐based method", distributes precipitation‐induced path attenuation, or PhiDP (differential phase shift), of a rain segment to each radar gate according to radar reflectivity (Zh). The second one is a linear version of the ZPHI method derived from an approximate linear relationship between specific attenuation (Ah) and specific differential phase (KDP). The third one is a nonlinear version of the ZPHI that respects the nonlinearity of the Ah–KDP relationship. The fourth method is inspired from the self‐consistent method of Bringi. The two‐moment normalized raindrop size distribution (DSD) with two variables, scaled drop concentration Nw$$ {N}_{\mathrm{w}} $$ and mean drop diameter Dm$$ {D}_{\mathrm{m}} $$, is used to represent natural variability of DSD. Two configurations are considered: a constant Nw$$ {N}_{\mathrm{w}} $$ over a segment and a variable Nw$$ {N}_{\mathrm{w}} $$ over a segment. The Ah, KDP, and rain intensity R$$ R $$ are estimated by the four profiling algorithms. The sensitivity of each algorithm to radar measurements uncertainty is also investigated. The evaluation of the estimates shows the following. First, for the range‐constant Nw$$ {N}_{\mathrm{w}} $$ situation, the nonlinear ZPHI and the self‐consistent method yield the best estimates if the measurements errors are not considered. However, the nonlinear ZPHI and the self‐consistent method are significantly impacted by the Zh bias and the measurements noises respectively. Second, for the range‐variable Nw$$ {N}_{\mathrm{w}} $$ situation, the self‐consistent method does not have a good performance even when radar measurements are accurate. The performance of the nonlinear ZPHI method is similar to the simple PhiDP‐based method, whereas the latter is immune to the Zh calibration error. These results suggest that the benefit of introducing Nw$$ {N}_{\mathrm{w}} $$ in quantitative precipitation estimation algorithms can be significantly reduced if Nw$$ {N}_{\mathrm{w}} $$ is not constant in reality and/or if the radar measurements are biased and noisy. The traditional algorithms for generating 3D human point clouds often face challenges in dealing with issues such as phantom targets and target classification caused by electromagnetic multipath effects, resulting in a lack of accuracy in the generated point clouds and requiring manual labeling of the position of the human body. To address these problems, this paper proposes an adaptive method for generating 3D human point clouds based on 4D millimeter-wave radar (Self-Adaptive mPoint, SA-mPoint). This method estimates the rough human point cloud by considering micro-motion and respiration characteristics while combining the echo dynamic with static information. Furthermore, it enhances the density of point cloud generation. It reduces interference from multipath noise through multi-frame dynamic fusion and an adaptive density-based clustering algorithm based on the center points of humans. The effectiveness of the SA-mPoint algorithm is verified through experiments conducted using the TI Millimeter Wave Cascade Imaging Radar Radio Frequency Evaluation Module 77G 4D cascade radar to collect challenging raw data consisting of single-target and multi-target human poses in an open classroom setting. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves an average accuracy rate of 97.94% for generating point clouds. Compared to the popular TI-mPoint algorithm, it generates a higher number of point clouds on average (increased by 87.94%), improves the average accuracy rate for generating point clouds (increased by 78.3%), and reduces the running time on average (reduced by 11.41%).
