Abstract

With pd collisions at Tp = 1.2 GeV exclusive measurements of the quasi-free pn → ppπ0π- reaction have been carried out. Using the WASA detector setup at COSY total and differential cross sections have been obtained for the energy region √s = 2.35 - 2.48 GeV. Though this includes the region of the ABC effect and its associated resonance structure, no low-mass enhancement (ABC effect) is found in the π0π--invariant mass spectrum - in agreement with the constraint from Bose statistics demanding the isovector pion pair to be in relative p-wave. Conventional calculations including t-channel processes for Roper, Δ(1600) and ΔΔ excitations and their decays, which are well-known from the study of the two-pion production in pp collisions, provide a reasonable description of the data at high energies, but fall low at low energies. From this we conclude that a large contribution from a so far unknown isoscalar low-energy process is missed in the calculations. Inclusion of the ABC resonance at m = 2.37 GeV with Γ = 70 MeV and I(JP) = 0(3+), which was recently observed in the pn → dπ0π0 reaction, leads to a much improved description of the data at low energies. Abstract

The ABC effect—a puzzling low-mass enhancement in the ππ invariant mass spectrum—is known from inclusive measurements of two-pion production in nuclear fusion reactions. Exclusive measurements conducted at CELSIUS-WASA for the fusion reactions leading to d and 3He in the final state reveal the ABC effect to be of scalar-isoscalar nature and to be associated with the formation of a resonance in the pn↔ΔΔ systems in the intermediate state. The differential distributions for the π0π0 channels can be well described, if a quasi-bound state within the ΔΔ system is assumed, which gives rise to a resonance structure in the total cross section. This ansatz is capable of describing all differential cross sections including the results of previous inclusive measurements on 4He as well as the energy dependence of the total cross sections. Abstract

The reaction pp→ppπ0π0 has been investigated at a beam energy of 1.4 GeV using the WASA-at-COSY facility. The total cross section is found to be (324±21systematic±58normalization) μb. In order to study the production mechanism, differential kinematic distributions have been evaluated. The differential distributions indicate that both initial state protons are excited into intermediate Δ(1232) resonances, each decaying into a proton and a single pion, thereby producing the pion pair in the final state. No significant contribution of the Roper resonance N⁎(1440) via its decay into a proton and two pions is found.

Abstract

The double-pionic fusion reactions dd → 4Heπ0π0 and dd → 4Heπ+π- were measured exclusively and kinematically complete with the WASA detector at COSY. The measurements were performed in the energy range Tp = 0.8 - 1.4 GeV covering thus the full energy region, where the so-called ABC effect - a peculiar low-mass enhancement in the ππ-invariant mass spectrum - was observed previously in inclusive measurements. Our findings for the double-pionic fusion to 4He are in accordance with the observations for the basic pn → dπ0π0 reaction pointing to the same fundamental mechanism. In both cases we observe that the ABC effect is associated with a peak in the energy dependence of the total cross section. In the 4He case the peak structure in the total cross section is broadened in comparison to the deuteron case. This is consistent with both Fermi motion of the basic pn system within 4He and with collision broadening as it is known, e.g., from excitations of the Δ resonance in nuclei. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an ultrafast nonlinear coupler fabricated by selectively filling of two strands of a PCF with the liquid CCl4 which exhibits a large Kerr nonlinearity. We demonstrate power dependent switching in this optofluidic device.

Abstract: The first exclusive measurements at CELSIUS-WASA for the double-pionic fusion to d or 3He reveal the ABC effect–a low-mass enhancement in the invariant mass spectrum–to be a channel phenomenon associated with the formation of a system and combined with a resonance-like behavior in the total cross section.
