Permanent morning shift workers often suffer from impaired sleep and complain about increased fatigue during the day due to an early rising time in the morning. A controlled field investigation with female permanent morning shift workers was conducted, which evaluated the acute, monthly and seasonal psycho-physiological and productivity-related impacts of a dynamic ambient lighting scenario. Dynamic lighting had an acute psycho-physiological calming effect and positively influenced sleep latency and anxiety/depression ratings. Finally, productivity (decreased mean relative handling time) was increased during the winter. This field study contributes to the growing knowledge about biological lighting impacts during shift work. Furthermore it indicates lighting effects on productivity-related and subjective measures for a sleep-deprived working population. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To assess the current state of asthma management in Austria and evaluate improvement of symptoms and quality of life (QoL) in asthma patients by adding the controller substance montelukast to existing therapy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Office-based pneumologists across Austria were invited to participate in an open-label, multicenter observational study. Male and female patients aged from 12-50 years with mild or moderate persistent asthma according to GINA guidelines and FEV(1) > 70% predicted were included if they were on concurrent asthma treatment, but still had persistent symptoms and reduced quality of life. Asthma control was assessed at time of patient anamnesis and subsequent follow-up visits. In addition, a physical examination was performed, lung function (FEV(1)) was measured and two types of validated QoL questionnaires were used: the Juniper Asthma Control Questionnaire was evaluated and documented by the physicians at each study visit and the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire was completed by the patients following each visit. RESULTS: A total of 851 patients (343 males, 508 females) were included and 328 patients were eligible for evaluation 3-5 months after completing at least two study visits. QoL rating by patients was available for 263 at baseline and for 216 patients after 3-5 months. The physicians' rating of asthma-related QoL showed improvements between 6.66 and 11.80% in the categories: nocturnal awakening, morning asthma symptoms, reduction of daily activities, wheezing and dyspnoea, but no reduction in the use of short acting ss(2)-agonists (SABA). The QoL judged by the patients by means of the QoL-Q showed statistically significant improvements in 13 of 15 parameters of QoL. The categories: response to cigarette smoke and response to air pollution showed positive trends (not significant) while the improvement of shortness of breath, response to dust, frustration, cough, anxiety, chest pressure, sleep quality, worries about asthma, wheezing, symptoms at heavy and moderate exercise and impairment of daily activities and activities at work reached statistical significance. CONCLUSION: This open-label, multicenter observational study shows significant improvement in six QoL parameters evaluated by the physicians and in 13 out of 15 QoL categories judged by the patients 3-5 months after adding montelukast to the ongoing asthma treatment in patients with mild or moderate persistent asthma. Limitations to these conclusions are the lack of a placebo control group (as this was an open-label study) and the continuing basal asthma therapy, which might contribute to improvement of asthma control. - Abstract
Activated charcoal provides effective treatment for most toxic ingestions. Accidental aspiration of activated charcoal is rare. Previously, there have been a few single cases reported on charcoal-related pulmonary complications. We describe an unusual case of pulmonary lesions 35 years after accidental aspiration of activated charcoal. The 38-year-old female patient presented with recurrent pneumothorax. A routinely performed chest roentgenogram revealed pulmonary lesions, highly suggestive to lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). Histopathological investigation of the lung tissue demonstrated some features of LAM but showed prominent pneumoconiotic lesions with cystic tissue destruction. The pneumoconiotic reaction was characterized by prominent black deposits accompanied by foreign-body granuloma formation and minimal fibrosis. Scanning electron microscopic investigation of these deposits showed particles measuring up to 300 μm in greatest diameter. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectra of these particles revealed carbon-rich material, presumably charcoal. The aspiration event was confirmed by the clinical history. To our knowledge, this is the first report not only on a long-term follow-up after aspiration of activated charcoal but also on charcoal-related pulmonary lesions in combination with LAM.Activated charcoal provides effective treatment for most toxic ingestions. 241. Metamorphism and metallogeny in the Eastern Alps
- Author
-
Pohl, W. and Belocky, R.
- Abstract
Abstract: The two Alpine orogenic phases of the Eastern Alps, in the Cretaceous and in the Tertiary, were both accompanied by the formation of mineral deposits. However, subduction-related magmatic belts as well as the typical “Andean” ore deposits are missing. Therefore, the role of metamorphism in East Alpine metallogeny was tentatively explored for more than 60 y, although for a long time without tangible results. Microthermometric, geochemical and isotopic investigations of fluid inclusions from selected Alpine mineral deposits presented allow a preliminary confirmation of the involvement of metamorphic fluids in their origin. Deposits which were formed immediately after the first, Cretaceous orogeny, were produced at high pressures by fluids of very high salinity and high density, and with an isotopic composition of the water falling into the metamorphic field. These fluids are best understood as products of metamorphic de-volatilization of rocks of the subducted South Pennine domain. In contrast to this, the deposits formed after the second, Tertiary orogeny, originated at relatively low pressures from fluids with an appreciable content of CO
2 and of low to moderate salinities. Isotopic compositions of this carbon indicate a deep crustal or even mantle source for CO2 , while the water is isotopically more heterogeneous and may have mixed sources, both surficial and metamorphic. Tectonic control of these mineralizations is late-orogenic trans-tensional faulting, which exposed hot metamorphic rocks to fluid convection along brittle structures. These deposits conform best to the model of metamorphogenic metallogenesis by retrograde leaching, although ponded metamorphic fluids and mantle volatiles may also have been involved.- Published

242. Spatio-temporal patterns and covariance structures of soil water status in two Northeast-German field sites

- Abstract
Spatio-temporal patterns of soil moisture status highly affect the heterogeneity of soil water and solute transport and leaching of chemicals to the groundwater. In order to quantify and describe spatial variability of ecologically highly relevant spatial and temporal processes linked to soil moisture at the land surface, the spatio-temporal covariance structure and the reasons for its change in time need to be identified. Therefore, soil water pressure head was monitored in two surface horizons between April and November 1995 at two field sites with a shallow ground water table, a sandy loam and a heavy clay soil in north-east Germany. For the 10- and the 30-cm depth of the sandy loam soil and for the 30-cm depth of the heavy clay soil the variance of soil water pressure head h(on log basis) was large under wet conditions. With decreasing soil water pressure head the variance of log10(−h) decreased to a critical value, for which a spatial correlation structure disappeared. With further drying, the variance of log10(−h) increased again, and a spatial range of correlation existed. During drying, temporally stable variation patterns developed at both field sites. The change of variance of log10(−h) which is probably associated with changing degree of heterogeneity of flow conditions validates the findings of Roth (1995)obtained from stochastic flow model calculations. In general, the temporal correlation length was better defined than that of spatial correlation. At both depths, correlation lengths of the sandy loam were larger than those of the heavy clay soil. Random spatial variation of log10(−h) occurred under conditions when the hydraulic gradient was close to zero. With our experimental design we could identify (i) temporal persistence of spatial patterns and correlation ranges of soil water status that can be used for representativity studies, (ii) the within-site variation of land surface moisture status, and (iii) a basis for description of spatial processes of effective soil properties that are linked to soil water status at the land surface.

243. A new genetic model for the North African metasomatic siderite deposits
- Author

Pohl, W., Amouri, M., Kolli, O., Scheffer, R., and Zachmann, D.
- Abstract
Based on published accounts of the diagenetic evolution of evaporite diapirs and geological, preliminary geochemical, and fluid inclusion data a new genetic model is presented for the North African metasomatic siderite deposits. Essentially, hot brines from the buried evaporites, gypsum-derived and/or other formation waters are thought to have reacted with their host rocks during early diagenesis becoming acid and reducing, thus allowing solution and transport of Fe and other cations. They were channeled toward the apical parts of diapirs where they deposited their solute by metasomatic processes in fractured roof carbonates. Other depositional modes by pressure and temperature drop as well as by mixing with near-surface waters are indicated by the occasional vein-type iron ores and very minor barite and fluorite. The model is quite comparable to recently published thoughts on the origin of the Pb-Zn deposits of the same area. Obviously, both groups of deposits share not only temporal and spatial but also causal metallogenic characteristics.

244. Kinetics of Proton-Hydroxyl Transport across Lecithin Vesicle Membranes as Measured with a Lipoid pH-Indicator

- Abstract
When unilamellar vesicles are prepared in the presence of 3-Palmitoyl-7-oxy-coumarin (abbreviation 3P-UBF) this lipoid pH-Indicator is anchored by its fatty acid chain to the membrane and can be used to measure pH-changes at the outer and inner membrane surface (ranging from pH 5 to pH 9.5). By rapidly-changing the pH of the outer aqueous phase a pH- gradient is set up across the vesicle membrane. The rate of the subsequent H+or OH-influx into the vesicles can be measured as a change of the 3P-UBF absorbance at 424 nm. This was done with a stopped-flow-spectrophotometer at temperatures between 10 °C and 50 °C.

- Abstract
Lecithin vesicles containing different cations were prepared by sonication and characterized. When the concentration of the divalent cations in the buffer was increased from 1 m? to about 100 m? the cation-concentration inside of the vesicles did not increase proportional to the outside concentration, but showed a saturation behaviour. The efflux of various cations mediated by ionophore A 23187 was measured and relative transport-rates were determined. The following sequence was obtained:

- Abstract
We describe an implementation of a general standard basis algorithm, valid for any monomial ordering compatible with the natural semigroup structure. We concentrate on new strategies which have proved useful, in particular in the non-wellordering case. Moreover, we describe the first implementation of Schreyer's method to compute syzygies and compare it with other, more classical methods. Comparisons of the computing time of several examples in the system SINGULAR give hints as to which strategies should be used in different classes of examples.

- Abstract
The fragment [(triphos)IrH], generated in situ by thermolysis of (triphos)Ir(H)
2 (C2 H5 ) in THF, reacts with dinaphtho[2,1-b:1,2-d]thiophene (DNT) at temperatures higher than 100 °C to give a temperature-invariant 3:2 mixture of the two diastereomeric C−S insertion products (triphos)IrH(η2(C,S)-C20 H12 S) (3a ,b ; triphos = MeC(CH2 PPh2 )3 ). In the temperature range from 70 to 100 °C, the reaction gives kinetic mixtures of the C−S insertion products and of the complex (triphos)IrH(η2-C20 H12 S) (2 ), which is suggested to contain an intact DNT molecule bound to iridium via a double bond from a naphthyl ring. Complex2 in THF transforms into3a ,b even at 70 °C. Hydrogenation of3a ,b (30 atm of H2 , 60 °C) in THF gives the dihydride thiolate complex (triphos)Ir(H)2 (SC20 H13 ), which is protonated by strong acids, converting to the dimer [(triphos)IrH(μ-SC20 H13 )2 HIr(triphos)](BPh4 )2 . The latter compound is straightforwardly obtained by reaction of3a ,b with protic acids. The complex (triphos)RhH3 (6 ) reacts with DNT (THF, 70 °C) to give exclusively the dihydride thiolate product (triphos)Rh(H)2 (SC20 H13 ). The latter complex reacts in THF with KOBut in the presence of H2 (5 atm) at room temperature to give the trihydride6 and potassium 1,1-binaphthalene-2-thiolate. In the presence of a strong base (KOBut), the π-alkyne complex [(triphos)Rh(η2-MeO2 CC&tbd1;CCO2 Me)]PF6 in THF behaves as a catalyst precursor for the homogeneous hydrogenolysis of DNT to 1,1-binaphthalene-2-thiol (30 atm of H2 , 160 °C). In the proposed mechanism, the [(triphos)RhH] fragment acts as the catalyst while the added base plays a dual role: it serves to generate the catalyst from the precursor and accelerates the reaction rate by influencing the rate-determining step positively.- Published
