Abstract

In [GMPS] we proved that the moment map image of a $b$-symplectic toric manifold is a convex $b$-polytope. In this paper we obtain convexity results for the more general case of non-toric hamiltonian torus actions on $b$-symplectic manifolds. The modular weights of the action on the connected components of the exceptional hypersurface play a fundamental role: either they are all zero and the moment map behaves as in classic symplectic one, or they are all nonzero and the moment map behaves as in the toric $b$-symplectic case studied in [GMPS]., Comment: 12 pages final version to appear at Mathematical Research Letters

Abstract

Toric origami manifolds are characterized by origami templates, which are combinatorial models built by gluing polytopes together along facets. In this paper, we examine the topology of orientable toric oigami manifolds with coorientable folding hypersurface. We determine the fundamental group. In our previous paper [HP], we studied the ordinary and equivariant cohomology rings of simply connected toric origami manifolds. 209. The Role of the European Inspections in the European Educational Space--Echoes from Portugal Regarding the Assessment of Schools

Abstract

This paper is an approach to the construction of a European educational space (Nóvoa & Lawn, 2002), which is due to new modes of regulation in education. The policy under consideration is the institutional evaluation of schools carried out by the Portuguese General Inspectorate of Education. The aim is to explore how concepts and policies get "contaminated" by the European models (Barroso, 2003, 2006) and understanding how the regulation is outlined by the Inspectorates in some European countries, including Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, France, the Netherlands and Belgium. This paper owes to the phenomena associated to "travelling policies" (Alexiadou & Jones, 2001), to "policy transfer" (Dolowitz et al, 2000; Stone, 2001), and to "policy borrowing" (Halpin & Troyna, 1995; Steiner-Khamsi, 2004). The authors' perspective on the influences of the international movement of policies is free from simplistic and deterministic logics (Lingard & Rizvi, 2000), advocating that the internationalization of ideas come along with national reflections on how these ideas are materialized (Popkewitz, 1996). At the local/regional levels, the regulation of educational systems can be characterized as a growing "multi-regulation"--that comes from a growing number of sources and a variety of tools (assessment, monitoring and sharing best practices)--which mingle with modes that exist in a more traditional, bureaucratic regulation (Afonso & Costa, 2010). Thus, each country has its own overview about the structures, and effects of globalization, which do not occur simultaneously, nor in the same way in the different "nation states" (Lingard & Rizvi, 2000). Abstract

The last 18 years have brought an increasing interest in the therapeutic use of perinatal derivatives (PnD). Preclinical studies used to assess the potential of PnD therapy include a broad range of study designs. The COST SPRINT Action (CA17116) aims to provide systematic and comprehensive reviews of preclinical studies for the understanding of the therapeutic potential and mechanisms of PnD in diseases and injuries that benefit from PnD therapy. Here we describe the publication search and data mining, extraction, and synthesis strategies employed to collect and prepare the published data selected for meta-analyses and reviews of the efficacy of PnD therapies for different diseases and injuries. A coordinated effort was made to prepare the data suitable to make statements for the treatment efficacy of the different types of PnD, routes, time points, and frequencies of administration, and the dosage based on clinically relevant effects resulting in clear increase, recovery or amelioration of the specific tissue or organ function. According to recently proposed guidelines, the harmonization of the nomenclature of PnD types will allow for the assessment of the most efficient treatments in various disease models. Experts within the COST SPRINT Action (CA17116), together with external collaborators, are doing the meta-analyses and reviews using the data prepared with the strategies presented here in the relevant disease or research fields. Our final aim is to provide standards to assess the safety and clinical benefit of PnD and to minimize redundancy in the use of animal models following the 3R principles for animal experimentation.

Abstract

The increasing role of higher education (HE) in lifelong learning processes seems to be a trend in the global context of the knowledge society. As in many other European countries, the rapid expansion of HE in Portugal in the last decades has resulted from democratisation of access and increase of participation at the tertiary level of education. The Portuguese post-graduate offer at universities has also increased and diversified in recent years, proving that there is a need for post-initial education across the lifespan of individuals. In this article, we intend to discuss some of the results obtained through a survey centred on the educational and professional trajectories of post-graduates from a group of Portuguese universities. We try to understand adult perspectives about learning and discuss the adult motivational dynamics towards their future learning. (Contains 4 figures, 5 footnotes, and 4 tables.)

Abstract

A folded symplectic form on a manifold is a closed 2-form with the mildest possible degeneracy along a hypersurface. A special class of folded symplectic manifolds are the origami symplectic manifolds, studied by Cannas da Silva, Guillemin and Pires, who classified toric origami manifolds by combinatorial origami templates. In this paper, we examine the topology of toric origami manifolds that have acyclic origami template and co-orientable folding hypersurface. We prove that the cohomology is concentrated in even degrees, and that the equivariant cohomology satisfies the GKM description. Finally we show that toric origami manifolds with co-orientable folding hypersurface provide a class of examples of Masuda and Panov's torus manifolds., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures. We construct a distance on the moduli space of symplectic toric manifolds of dimension four. Then we study some basic topological properties of this space, in particular, path-connectedness, compactness, and completeness. The construction of the distance is related to the Duistermaat-Heckman measure and the Hausdorff metric. Abstract

Let $M^{2n}$ be a Poisson manifold with Poisson bivector field $\Pi$. We say that $M$ is b-Poisson if the map $\Pi^n:M\to\Lambda^{2n}(TM)$ intersects the zero section transversally on a codimension one submanifold $Z\subset M$. This paper will be a systematic investigation of such Poisson manifolds. In particular, we will study in detail the structure of $(M,\Pi)$ in the neighbourhood of $Z$ and using symplectic techniques define topological invariants which determine the structure up to isomorphism. Abstract

In 1866 Gregor Mendel published a seminal paper containing the foundations of modern genetics. In 1936 Ronald Fisher published a statistical analysis of Mendel's data concluding that "the data of most, if not all, of the experiments have been falsified so as to agree closely with Mendel's expectations." The accusation gave rise to a controversy which has reached the present time. There are reasonable grounds to assume that a certain unconscious bias was systematically introduced in Mendel's experimentation. Based on this assumption, a probability model that fits Mendel's data and does not offend Fisher's analysis is given. In this short note we give a complete characterization of a certain class of compact corank one Poisson manifolds, those equipped with a closed one-form defining the symplectic foliation and a closed two-form extending the symplectic form on each leaf. If such a manifold has a compact leaf, then all the leaves are compact, and furthermore the manifold is a mapping torus of a compact leaf. Abstract

Histoplasma capsulatum causes a fungal respiratory disease. Some studies suggest that the fungus requires zinc to consolidate the infection. This study aimed to investigate the influence of zinc and the metal chelator TPEN on the growth of Histoplasma in planktonic and biofilm forms. The results showed that zinc increased the metabolic activity, cell density, and cell viability of planktonic growth. Similarly, there was an increase in biofilm metabolic activity but no increase in biomass or extracellular matrix production. N′-N,N,N,N–tetrakis–2-pyridylmethylethane–1,2 diamine (TPEN) dramatically reduced the same parameters in the planktonic form and resulted in a decrease in metabolic activity, biomass, and extracellular matrix production for the biofilm form. Therefore, the unprecedented observations in this study highlight the importance of zinc ions for the growth, development, and proliferation of H. capsulatum cells and provide new insights into the role of metal ions for biofilm formation in the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma, which could be a potential therapeutic strategy. Abstract

The role of metalloproteinases (MMPs) in hematological malignancies, like acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS), and multiple myeloma (MM), is well-documented, and these pathologies remain with poor outcomes despite treatment advancements. In this study, we investigated the effects of batimastat (BB-94), an MMP inhibitor (MMPi), in single-administration and daily administration schemes in AML, MDS, and MM cell lines. We used four hematologic neoplasia cell lines: the HL-60 and NB-4 cells as AML models, the F36-P cells as an MDS model, and the H929 cells as a model of MM. We also tested batimastat toxicity in a normal human lymphocyte cell line (IMC cells). BB-94 decreases cell viability and density in a dose-, time-, administration-scheme-, and cell-line-dependent manner, with the AML cells displaying higher responses. The efficacy in inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrests is dependent on the cell line (higher effects in AML cells), especially with lower daily doses, which may mitigate treatment toxicity. Furthermore, BB-94 activated apoptosis via caspases and ERK1/2 pathways. Abstract

The main goal of this work was to elucidate the potential relevance of (radio)metal chelates of 99mTc and Re targeting Gquadruplex structures for the design of new tools for cancer theranostics. 99mTc provides the complexes with the ability to perform single-photon-emission computed tomography imaging studies, while the Re complexes should act as anticancer agents upon interaction with specific G4 DNA or RNA structures present in tumor tissues. Towards this goal, we have developed isostructural 99mTc(I) and Re(I) tricarbonyl complexes anchored by a pyrazolyl-diamine (Pz) chelator carrying a pendant pyridostatin (PDS) fragment as the G4-binding motif. The interaction of the PDF-Pz-Re (8) complex with different G4-forming oligonucleotides was studied by circular dichroism, fluorescence spectroscopy and FRET-melting assays. The results showed that the Re complex retained the ability to bind and stabilize G4-structures from different DNA or RNA sequences, namely those present on the SRC proto-oncogene and telomeric RNA (TERRA sequence). PDF-Pz-Re (8) showed low to moderate cytotoxicity in PC3 and MCF-7 cancer cell lines, as typically observed for G4-binders. Biodistribution studies of the congener PDF-Pz-99mTc (12) in normal mice showed that the complex undergoes a fast blood clearance with a predominant hepatobiliary excretion, pointing also for a high in vitro stability.
