Associating the formation sites of haloes with the maxima of the smoothed linear density field, we present non-perturbative predictions for the Lagrangian and evolved halo correlation functions that are valid at all separations. In Lagrangian space, we find significant deviations from the perturbative bias calculation at small scales, in particular, a pronounced exclusion region where $\xi=-1$ for maxima of unequal height. Our predictions are in good agreement with the Lagrangian clustering of dark matter proto-haloes reconstructed from N-body simulations. Our predictions for the mean infall and velocity dispersion of haloes, which differ from the local bias expansion, show a similar level of agreement with simulations. Finally, we displace the initial density peaks according to the Zeldovich approximation in order to predict the late-time clustering of dark matter haloes. While we are able to reproduce the early evolution of this conserved set of tracers, our approximation fails at the collapse epoch (z=0) on non-linear scales r<10Mpc/h, emphasizing the need for a non-perturbative treatment of the halo displacement field., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, comments welcome

Feedback processes play a fundamental role in the regulation of the star formation (SF) activity in galaxies and, in particular, in the quenching of early-type galaxies (ETGs) as has been inferred by observational and numerical studies of Lambda CDM models. At z = 0, ETGs exhibit well-known fundamental scaling relations, but the connection between them and the physical processes shaping ETG evolution remains unknown.This work aims at studying the impact of the energetic feedback due to active galactic nuclei (AGN) on the formation and evolution of ETGs.We focus on assessing the impact of AGN feedback on the evolution of the mass-plane and the fundamental plane (FP, defined by using mass surface density) as well as on morphology, kinematics, and stellar age across the FP.The Horizon-AGN and Horizon-noAGN cosmological hydrodynamical simulations were performed with identical initial conditions and including the same physical processes except for the activation of the AGN feedback in the former. We select a sample of central ETGs from both simulations using the same criteria and exhaustively study their SF activity, kinematics, and scaling relations for z <= 3. We find that Horizon-AGN ETGs identified at z = 0 follow the observed fundamental scaling relations (mass-plane, FP, mass-size relation) and qualitatively reproduce kinematic features albeit conserving a rotational inner component with a mass fraction regulated by the AGN feedback. AGN feedback seems to be required to reproduce the bimodality in the spin parameter distribution reported by observational works and the mass-size relation (with more massive galaxies having older stellar populations (SPs), larger sizes, and being slower rotators). There have been many studies aiming to reveal the origins of the star-gas misalignment found in galaxies, but there still is a lack of understanding of the contribution from each formation channel candidate. We aim to answer the question by investigating the misaligned galaxies in Horizon-AGN, a cosmological large-volume simulation of galaxy formation. There are 27,903 galaxies of stellar mass $M_* > 10^{10} M_\odot$ in our sample, of which 5,984 are in a group of the halo mass of $M_{200} > 10^{12} M_\odot$. We have identified four main formation channels of misalignment and quantified their level of contribution: mergers (35%), interaction with nearby galaxies (23%), interaction with dense environments or their central galaxies (21%), and secular evolution including smooth accretion from neighboring filaments (21%). We found in the simulation that the gas, rather than stars, is typically more vulnerable to dynamical disturbances; hence, misalignment formation is mainly due to the change in the rotational axis of the gas rather than stars, regardless of the origin. We have also inspected the lifetime (duration) of the misalignment. The decay timescale of the misalignment shows a strong anti-correlation with the kinematic morphology ($V/{\sigma}$) and the cold gas fraction of the galaxy. The misalignment has a longer lifetime in denser regions, which is linked with the environmental impact on the host galaxy. There is a substantial difference in the length of the misalignment lifetime depending on the origin, and it can be explained by the magnitude of the initial position angle offset and the physical properties of the galaxies., Comment: 27 pages, 20 figures, 1 table. Focusing on both small separations and Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation scales, the cosmic evolution of the clustering properties of peak, void, wall, and filament-type critical points is measured using two-point correlation functions in $\Lambda$CDM dark matter simulations as a function of their relative rarity. A qualitative comparison to the corresponding theory for Gaussian Random fields allows us to understand the following observed features: i) the appearance of an exclusion zone at small separation, whose size depends both on rarity and on the signature (\ie the number of negative eigenvalues) of the critical points involved; ii) the amplification of the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation bump with rarity and its reversal for cross-correlations involving negatively biased critical points; iii) the orientation-dependent small-separation divergence of the cross-correlations of peaks and filaments (voids and walls) which reflects the relative loci of such points in the filament's (wall's) eigenframe. The most significant features of the correlations are tabulated. The (cross-) correlations involving the most non-linear critical points (peaks, voids) display significant variation with redshift, while those involving less non-linear critical points seem mostly insensitive to redshift evolution, which should prove advantageous to model. The relative distances to the maxima of the peak-to-wall and peak-to-void over that of the peak-to-filament cross-correlation are in ratios of $\sim\sqrt{2}$ and $\sim\sqrt{3}$, respectively which could be interpreted as an indication of the cosmic crystal being on average close to a cubic lattice. The insensitivity to redshift evolution suggests that the absolute and relative clustering of critical points could become a topologically robust alternative to standard clustering techniques when analyzing upcoming large scale surveys such as Euclid or LSST., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables, submitted to MNRAS

In the standard Lambda-CDM paradigm, dwarf galaxies are expected to be dark-matter-rich, as baryonic feedback is thought to quickly drive gas out of their shallow potential wells and quench star formation at early epochs. Recent observations of local dwarfs with extremely low dark matter content appear to contradict this picture, potentially bringing the validity of the standard model into question. We use NewHorizon, a high-resolution cosmological simulation, to demonstrate that sustained stripping of dark matter, in tidal interactions between a massive galaxy and a dwarf satellite, naturally produces dwarfs that are dark-matter-deficient, even though their initial dark matter fractions are normal. The process of dark matter stripping is responsible for the large scatter in the halo-to-stellar mass relation in the dwarf regime. The degree of stripping is driven by the closeness of the orbit of the dwarf around its massive companion and, in extreme cases, produces dwarfs with halo-to-stellar mass ratios as low as unity, consistent with the findings of recent observational studies. ~30 per cent of dwarfs show some deviation from normal dark matter fractions due to dark matter stripping, with 10 per cent showing high levels of dark matter deficiency (Mhalo/M*<10). Given their close orbits, a significant fraction of dark-matter-deficient dwarfs merge with their massive companions (e.g. ~70 per cent merge over timescales of ~3.5 Gyrs), with the dark-matter-deficient population being constantly replenished by new interactions between dwarfs and massive companions. Ever since a thick disk was proposed to explain the vertical distribution of the Milky Way disk stars, its origin has been a recurrent question. We aim to answer this question by inspecting 19 disk galaxies with stellar mass greater than $10^{10}\,\rm M_\odot$ in recent cosmological high-resolution zoom-in simulations: Galactica and NewHorizon. The thin and thick disks are reasonably reproduced by the simulations with scale heights and luminosity ratios as observed. We then spatially classify the thin and thick disks and find that the thick disk stars are older, metal-poorer, kinematically-hotter, and higher in accreted star fraction, while both disks are dominated by the stars formed in situ. Half of the in-situ stars in the thick disks are formed before the galaxies develop their disks, and the rest are formed in spatially and kinematically thinner disks and then thickened with time by heating. However, the 19 galaxies have various properties and evolutionary routes, highlighting the need for statistically-large samples to draw general conclusions. We conclude from our simulations that the thin and thick disk components are not entirely distinct in terms of formation processes, but rather markers of the evolution of galactic disks. Moreover, as the combined result of the thickening of the existing disk stars and the continued formation of young thin-disk stars, the vertical distribution of stars does not change much after the disks settle, pointing to the modulation of both orbital diffusion and star formation by the same confounding factor: the proximity of galaxies to marginal stability., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

Hydrodynamical cosmological simulations are increasing their level of realism by considering more physical processes and having greater resolution or larger statistics. However, usually either the statistical power of such simulations or the resolution reached within galaxies are sacrificed. Here, we introduce the NewHorizon project in which we simulate at high resolution a zoom-in region of $\sim(16\,\rm Mpc)^3$ that is larger than a standard zoom-in region around a single halo and is embedded in a larger box. A resolution of up to 34 pc is reached within galaxies; this allows the simulation to capture the multi-phase nature of the interstellar medium and the clumpy nature of the star formation process in galaxies. In this introductory paper, we present several key fundamental properties of galaxies and their black holes, including the galaxy mass function, cosmic star formation rate, galactic metallicities, the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation, the stellar-to-halo mass relation, galaxy sizes, stellar kinematics and morphology, gas content within galaxies and its kinematics, and the black hole mass and spin properties over time. The various scaling relations are broadly reproduced by NewHorizon with some differences with the standard observables. Owing to its exquisite spatial resolution, NewHorizon captures the inefficient process of star formation in galaxies, which evolve over time from being more turbulent, gas rich, and star bursting at high redshift. These high-redshift galaxies are also more compact, and they are more elliptical and clumpier until the level of internal gas turbulence decays enough to allow for the formation of discs. The NewHorizon simulation gives access to a broad range of galaxy formation and evolution physics at low-to-intermediate stellar masses, which is a regime that will become accessible in the near future through surveys such as the LSST., Comment: 29 pages, 28 figures, A&A accepted

We examine how the mass assembly of central galaxies depends on their location in the cosmic web. The HORIZON-AGN simulation is analysed at z~2 using the DISPERSE code to extract multi-scale cosmic filaments. We find that the dependency of galaxy properties on large-scale environment is mostly inherited from the (large-scale) environmental dependency of their host halo mass. When adopting a residual analysis that removes the host halo mass effect, we detect a direct and non-negligible influence of cosmic filaments. Proximity to filaments enhances the build-up of stellar mass, a result in agreement with previous studies. However, our multi-scale analysis also reveals that, at the edge of filaments, star formation is suppressed. In addition, we find clues for compaction of the stellar distribution at close proximity to filaments. We suggest that gas transfer from the outside to the inside of the haloes (where galaxies reside) becomes less efficient closer to filaments, due to high angular momentum supply at the vorticity-rich edge of filaments. We investigate the rate of orbital orientation dilution of young stellar clusters in the vicinity of supermassive black holes. Within the framework of vector resonant relaxation, we predict the time evolution of the two-point correlation function of the stellar orbital plane orientations as a function of their initial angular separation and diversity in orbital parameters (semi-major axis, eccentricity). As expected, the larger the spread in initial orientations and orbital parameters, the more efficient the dilution of a given set of co-eval stars, with a characteristic timescale set up by the coherence time of the background potential fluctuations. A Markovian prescription which matches numerical simulations allows us to efficiently probe the underlying kinematic properties of the unresolved nucleus when requesting consistency with a given dilution efficiency, imposed by the observed stellar disc within the one arcsecond of Sgr A*. As a proof of concept, we compute maps of constant dilution times as a function of the semi major axis cusp index and fraction of intermediate mass black holes in the old background stellar cluster. This computation suggests that vector resonant relaxation should prove useful in this context since it impacts orientations on timescales comparable to the stars' age., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Finite-$N$ effects unavoidably drive the long-term evolution of long-range interacting $N$-body systems. The Balescu-Lenard kinetic equation generically describes this process sourced by ${1/N}$ effects but this kinetic operator exactly vanishes by symmetry for one-dimensional homogeneous systems: such systems undergo a kinetic blocking and cannot relax as a whole at this order in ${1/N}$. It is therefore only through the much weaker ${1/N^{2}}$ effects, sourced by three-body correlations, that these systems can relax, leading to a much slower evolution. In the limit where collective effects can be neglected, but for an arbitrary pairwise interaction potential, we derive a closed and explicit kinetic equation describing this very long-term evolution. We show how this kinetic equation satisfies an $H$-theorem while conserving particle number and energy, ensuring the unavoidable relaxation of the system towards the Boltzmann equilibrium distribution. Provided that the interaction is long-range, we also show how this equation cannot suffer from further kinetic blocking, i.e., the ${1/N^{2}}$ dynamics is always effective. Dwarf galaxies (M*<10^9 Msun) are key drivers of mass assembly in high mass galaxies, but relatively little is understood about the assembly of dwarf galaxies themselves. Using the \textsc{NewHorizon} cosmological simulation (40 pc spatial resolution), we investigate how mergers and fly-bys drive the mass assembly and structural evolution of around 1000 field and group dwarfs up to z=0.5. We find that, while dwarf galaxies often exhibit disturbed morphologies (5 and 20 per cent are disturbed at z=1 and z=3 respectively), only a small proportion of the morphological disturbances seen in dwarf galaxies are driven by mergers at any redshift (for 10^9 Msun, mergers drive only 20 per cent morphological disturbances). They are instead primarily the result of interactions that do not end in a merger (e.g. fly-bys). Given the large fraction of apparently morphologically disturbed dwarf galaxies which are not, in fact, merging, this finding is particularly important to future studies identifying dwarf mergers and post-mergers morphologically at intermediate and high redshifts. Dwarfs typically undergo one major and one minor merger between z=5 and z=0.5, accounting for 10 per cent of their total stellar mass. Mergers can also drive moderate star formation enhancements at lower redshifts (3 or 4 times at z=1), but this accounts for only a few per cent of stellar mass in the dwarf regime given their infrequency. Non-merger interactions drive significantly smaller star formation enhancements (around two times), but their preponderance relative to mergers means they account for around 10 per cent of stellar mass formed in the dwarf regime., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures, version accepted for publication in MNRAS. Low-surface-brightness galaxies (LSBGs) -- defined as systems that are fainter than the surface-brightness limits of past wide-area surveys -- form the overwhelming majority of galaxies in the dwarf regime (M* < 10^9 MSun). Using NewHorizon, a high-resolution cosmological simulation, we study the origin of LSBGs and explain why LSBGs at similar stellar mass show the large observed spread in surface brightness. New Horizon galaxies populate a well-defined locus in the surface brightness -- stellar mass plane, with a spread of ~3 mag arcsec^-2, in agreement with deep SDSS Stripe data. Galaxies with fainter surface brightnesses today are born in regions of higher dark-matter density. This results in faster gas accretion and more intense star formation at early epochs. The stronger resultant supernova feedback flattens gas profiles at a faster rate which, in turn, creates shallower stellar profiles (i.e. more diffuse systems) more rapidly. As star formation declines towards late epochs (z<1), the larger tidal perturbations and ram pressure experienced by these systems (due to their denser local environments) accelerate the divergence in surface brightness, by increasing their effective radii and reducing star formation respectively. A small minority of dwarfs depart from the main locus towards high surface brightnesses, making them detectable in past wide surveys. These systems have anomalously high star-formation rates, triggered by recent, fly-by or merger-driven starbursts. We present the Extreme-Horizon (EH) cosmological simulation: EH models galaxy formation with stellar and AGN feedback and uses a very high resolution in the intergalactic and circumgalactic medium. The high resolution in low-density regions results in smaller-size massive galaxies at redshift $z=2$, in better agreement with observations compared to other simulations. This results from the improved modeling of cold gas flows accreting onto galaxies. Besides, the EH simulation forms a population of particularly compact galaxies with stellar masses of $10^{10-11}$\,M$_\sun$ that are reminiscent of observed ultracompact galaxies at $z\simeq2$. These objects form mainly through repeated major mergers of low-mass progenitors, independently of baryonic feedback mechanisms. The aim of this paper to introduce the reader to a recent point of view on the Lipschitz classifications of complex singularities. It presents the complete classification of Lipschitz geometry of complex plane curves singularities and in particular, it introduces the so-called bubble trick and bubble trick with jumps which are key tools to study Lipschitz geometry of germs. It describes also the thick-thin decomposition of a normal complex surface singularity and built two geometric decompositions of a normal surface germ into standard pieces which are invariant by respectively inner and outer bilipschitz homeomorphisms. The past decade has seen significant progress in understanding galaxy formation and evolution using large-scale cosmological simulations. While these simulations produce galaxies in overall good agreement with observations, they employ different sub-grid models for galaxies and supermassive black holes (BHs). We investigate the impact of the sub-grid models on the BH mass properties of the Illustris, TNG100, TNG300, Horizon-AGN, EAGLE, and SIMBA simulations, focusing on the M_BH-M_star relation and the BH mass function. All simulations predict tight M_BH-M_star relations, and struggle to produce the lowest (M_BH< 10^7.5 Msun) in galaxies of M_star~10^10.5-10^11.5 Msun. While the time evolution of the mean M_BH-M_star relation is mild (<1 dex in BH mass for 010^9 Msun in most of the simulations. The BH mass function is dominated by efficiently accreting BHs (log10 f_Edd >-2$) at high redshifts, and transitions progressively from the high-mass to the low-mass end to be governed by inactive BHs. We undertake a systematic study of Lipschitz Normally Embedded normal complex surface germs. We prove in particular that the topological type of such a germ determines the combinatorics of its minimal resolution which factors through the blowup of its maximal ideal and through its Nash transform, as well as the polar curve and the discriminant curve of a generic plane projection, thus generalizing results of Spivakovsky and Bondil that were known for minimal surface singularities. Horizon Run 5 (HR5) is a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation which captures the properties of the Universe on a Gpc scale while achieving a resolution of 1kpc. Inside the simulation box we zoom-in on a high-resolution cuboid region with a volume of $1049\times119\times127\,{\rm cMpc}^3$.The sub-grid physics chosen to model galaxy formation includes radiative heating/cooling, UV background, star formation, supernova feedback, chemical evolution tracking the enrichment of oxygen and iron, the growth of supermassive black holes and feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the form of a dual jet-heating mode. For this simulation we implemented a hybrid MPI-OMP version of RAMSES, specifically targeted for modern many-core many thread parallel architectures. In addition to the traditional simulation snapshots, light-cone data was generated on the fly. For the post-processing, we extended the Friends-of-Friend (FoF) algorithm and developed a new galaxy finder PGalF to analyse the outputs of HR5. The simulation successfully reproduces observations, such as the cosmic star formation history and connectivity of galaxy distribution, We identify cosmological structures at a wide range of scales, from filaments with a length of several cMpc, to voids with a radius of ~100 cMpc. The simulation also indicates that hydrodynamical effects on small scales impact galaxy clustering up to very large scales near and beyond the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale. Hence, caution should be taken when using that scale as a cosmic standard ruler: one needs to carefully understand the corresponding biases. We have been monitoring the metal-poor Population II giant, HD 122563, for radial velocity variations since 2016 using the SONG telescope on Tenerife. We have detected the global seismic quantity, numax, which provides information related to the stellar parameters. By combining these data with complementary data, we derive a new precise surface gravity, radius and distance to the star. Our results are corroborated by using the parallax from Gaia DR2. We study shapes and alignments of 45 dark matter (DM) haloes and their brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) using a sample of 39 massive clusters from Hubble Frontier Field (HFF), Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH), and Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS). We measure shapes of the DM haloes by strong gravitational lensing, whereas BCG shapes are derived from their light profiles in Hubble Space Telescope images. Our measurements from a large sample of massive clusters presented here provide new constraints on dark matter and cluster astrophysics. We find that DM haloes are on average highly elongated with the mean ellipticity of $0.482\pm 0.028$, and position angles of major axes of DM haloes and their BCGs tend to be aligned well with the mean value of alignment angles of $22.2\pm 3.9$ deg. We find that DM haloes in our sample are on average more elongated than their BCGs with the mean difference of their ellipticities of $0.11\pm 0.03$. In contrast, the Horizon-AGN cosmological hydrodynamical simulation predicts on average similar ellipticities between DM haloes and their central galaxies. While such a difference between the observations and the simulation may well be explained by the difference of their halo mass scales, other possibilities include the bias inherent to strong lensing measurements, limited knowledge of baryon physics, or a limitation of cold dark matter., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, 6 Tables, accepted by MNRAS

Modern JavaScript includes the SharedArrayBuffer feature, which provides access to true shared memory concurrency. SharedArrayBuffers are simple linear buffers of bytes, and the JavaScript specification defines an axiomatic relaxed memory model to describe their behaviour. While this model is heavily based on the C/C++11 model, it diverges in some key areas. JavaScript chooses to give a well-defined semantics to data-races, unlike the "undefined behaviour" of C/C++11. Moreover, the JavaScript model is mixed-size. This means that its accesses are not to discrete locations, but to (possibly overlapping) ranges of bytes. We show that the model, in violation of the design intention, does not support a compilation scheme to ARMv8 which is used in practice. We propose a correction, which also incorporates a previously proposed fix for a failure of the model to provide Sequential Consistency of Data-Race-Free programs (SC-DRF), an important correctness condition. We use model checking, in Alloy, to generate small counter-examples for these deficiencies, and investigate our correction. To accomplish this, we also develop a mixed-size extension to the existing ARMv8 axiomatic model. Guided by our Alloy experimentation, we mechanise (in Coq) the JavaScript model (corrected and uncorrected), our ARMv8 model, and, for the corrected JavaScript model, a "model-internal" SC-DRF proof and a compilation scheme correctness proof to ARMv8. In addition, we investigate a non-mixed-size subset of the corrected JavaScript model, and give proofs of compilation correctness for this subset to x86-TSO, Power, RISC-V, ARMv7, and (again) ARMv8, via the Intermediate Memory Model (IMM). Massive black hole (MBH) coalescences are powerful sources of low-frequency gravitational waves. To study these events in the cosmological context we need to trace the large-scale structure and cosmic evolution of a statistical population of galaxies, from dim dwarfs to bright galaxies. To cover such a large range of galaxy masses, we analyse two complementary simulations: Horizon-AGN with a large volume and low resolution which tracks the high-mass (> 1e7 Msun) MBH population, and NewHorizon with a smaller volume but higher resolution that traces the low-mass (< 1e7 Msun) MBH population. While Horizon-AGN can be used to estimate the rate of inspirals for Pulsar Timing Arrays, NewHorizon can investigate MBH mergers in a statistical sample of dwarf galaxies for LISA, which is sensitive to low-mass MBHs. We use the same method to analyse the two simulations, post-processing MBH dynamics to account for time delays mostly determined by dynamical friction and stellar hardening. In both simulations, MBHs typically merge long after the galaxies do, so that the galaxy morphology at the time of the MBH merger is no longer determined by the galaxy merger from which the MBH merger originated. These time delays cause a loss of high-z MBH coalescences, shifting the peak of the MBH merger rate to z~1-2. Galaxy merger histories correlate strongly with stellar mass, largely regardless of morphology. Thus, at fixed stellar mass, spheroids and discs share similar assembly histories, both in terms of the frequency of mergers and the distribution of their mass ratios. Since mergers are the principal drivers of disc-to-spheroid morphological transformation, and the most massive galaxies typically have the richest merger histories, it is surprising that discs exist at all at the highest stellar masses (e.g. beyond the knee of the mass function). Using Horizon-AGN, a cosmological hydro-dynamical simulation, we show that extremely massive (M*> 10^11.4 MSun) discs are created via two channels. In the primary channel (accounting for ~70% of these systems and ~8% of massive galaxies) the most recent, significant merger (stellar mass ratio > 1:10) between a massive spheroid and a gas-rich satellite `spins up' the spheroid by creating a new rotational stellar component, leaving a massive disc as the remnant. In the secondary channel (accounting for ~30% of these systems and ~3% of massive galaxies), a system maintains a disc throughout its lifetime, due to an anomalously quiet merger history. Not unexpectedly, the fraction of massive discs is larger at higher redshift, due to the Universe being more gas-rich. The morphological mix of galaxies at the highest stellar masses is, therefore, a strong function of the gas fraction of the Universe. Finally, these massive discs have similar black-hole masses and accretion rates to massive spheroids, providing a natural explanation for why a minority of powerful AGN are surprisingly found in disc galaxies., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure, accepted in MNRAS

Improving distance measurements in large imaging surveys is a major challenge to better reveal the distribution of galaxies on a large scale and to link galaxy properties with their environments. Photometric redshifts can be efficiently combined with the cosmic web (CW) extracted from overlapping spectroscopic surveys to improve their accuracy. We apply a similar method using a new generation of photometric redshifts based on a convolution neural network (CNN). The CNN is trained on the SDSS images with the main galaxy sample (SDSS-MGS, $r \leq 17.8$) and the GAMA spectroscopic redshifts up tor $\sim 19.8$. The mapping of the CW is obtained with 680,000 spectroscopic redshifts from the MGS and BOSS surveys. The redshift probability distribution functions (PDF), which are well calibrated (unbiased and narrow, $\leq 120$ Mpc), intercept a few CW structure along the line of sight. Combining these PDFs with the density field distribution provides new photometric redshifts, $z_{web}$, whose accuracy is improved by a factor of two (i.e.,${\sigma} \sim 0.004(1+z)$) for galaxies with $r \leq 17.8$. For half of them, the distance accuracy is better than 10 cMpc. The narrower the original PDF, the larger the boost in accuracy. No gain is observed for original PDFs wider than 0.03. The final $z_{web}$ PDFs also appear well calibrated. The method performs slightly better for passive galaxies than star-forming ones, and for galaxies in massive groups since these populations better trace the underlying large-scale structure. Reducing the spectroscopic sampling by a factor of 8 still improves the photometric redshift accuracy by 25%. Extending the method to galaxies fainter than the MGS limit still improves the redshift estimates for 70% of the galaxies, with a gain in accuracy of 20% at low $z$ where the resolution of the CW is the highest.

The merging rate of cosmic structures is computed, relying on the Ansatz that they can be predicted in the initial linear density field from the coalescence of critical points with increasing smoothing scale, used here as a proxy for cosmic time. Beyond the mergers of peaks with saddle points (a proxy for halo mergers), we consider the coalescence and nucleation of all sets of critical points, including wall-saddle to filament-saddle and wall-saddle to minima (a proxy for filament and void mergers respectively), as they impact the geometry of galactic infall, and in particular filament disconnection. Analytical predictions of the one-point statistics are validated against multiscale measurements in 2D and 3D realisations of Gaussian random fields (the corresponding code being available upon request) and compared qualitatively to cosmological $N$-body simulations at early times ($z\geq 10$) and large scales ($\geq 5\, \mathrm{Mpc}/h$). The rate of filament coalescence is compared to the merger rate of haloes and the two-point clustering of these events is computed, along with their cross-correlations with critical points. These correlations are qualitatively consistent with the preservation of the connectivity of dark matter haloes, and the impact of the large scale structures on assembly bias. The destruction rate of haloes and voids as a function of mass and redshift is quantified down to $z=0$ for a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology.
