Distinctive anatomical features of bones can influence not only how these structures perform in living animals but also the tendency of elements to be transported by flowing water after death. Such transport can be critical in the concentration of fossils from animals that live near freshwater habitats, providing important context for interpreting the composition of paleocommunities. Measurements of the tendency of flowing water to disperse skeletal elements have been collected for diverse taxa, including mammals, turtles, and birds. However, these extant models may not be entirely appropriate for many morphologically distinct extinct lineages, such as non-avian dinosaurs. To expand the range of models available for evaluating the influence of hydrodynamic transport on the assembly of fossil deposits, we used a flow tank to measure the water speeds that disperse bones from a subadult American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), with the skull and mandible tested in multiple starting orientations. Alligator bones are sorted into three main dispersal groups: early (vertebrae, most girdle elements), intermediate (ribs, most limb bones), and late (pubis, femur), with the skull and mandible varying between intermediate and late depending on orientation. Late dispersing elements tended to be heavy or very flat. These results can refine interpretations of the taphonomic context for deposits of fossil crocodylians and morphologically similar taxa (e.g., choristoderes, phytosaurs) and provide an additional comparative model for deposits of non-avian dinosaurs. Much of the ecological discourse surrounding the polarising theropod Spinosaurus has centred on qualitative discussions. Using a quantitative multivariate data analytical approach on size-adjusted linear measurements of the skull, we examine patterns in skull shape across a range of sauropsid clades and three ecological realms (terrestrial, semi-aquatic, and aquatic). We utilise cluster analyses to identify emergent properties of the data which associate properties of skull shape with ecological realm occupancy. Results revealed terrestrial ecologies to be significantly distinct from both semi- and fully aquatic ecologies, the latter two were not significantly different. Spinosaurids (including Spinosaurus) plotted away from theropods in morphospace and close to both marine taxa and wading birds. The position of nares and the degree of rostral elongation had the greatest effect on categorisation. Comparisons of supervised (k-means) and unsupervised clustering demonstrated categorising taxa into three groups (ecological realms) was inappropriate and suggested instead that cluster division is based on morphological adaptations to feeding on aquatic versus terrestrial food items. The relative position of the nares in longirostrine taxa is associated with which skull bones are elongated. Rostral elongation is observed by either elongating the maxilla and the premaxilla or by elongating the maxilla only. This results in the nares positioned towards the orbits or towards the anterior end of the rostrum respectively, with implications on available feeding methods. Spinosaurids, especially Spinosaurus, show elongation in the maxilla-premaxilla complex, achieving similar functional outcomes to elongation of the premaxilla seen in birds, particularly large-bodied piscivorous taxa. Such a skull construction would bolster "stand-and-wait" predation of aquatic prey to a greater extent than serving other proposed feeding methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Predating Darwin's theory of evolution, the holotype of Saurodesmus robertsoni is a long-standing enigma. Found at the beginning of 1840s, the specimen is a damaged stylopodial bone over decades variably assigned to turtles, archosaurs, parareptiles, or synapsids, and currently nearly forgotten. We redescribe and re-assess that curious specimen as a femur and consider Saurodesmus robertsoni as a valid taxon of a derived cynodont (?Tritylodontidae). It shares with probainognathians more derived than Prozostrodon a mainly medially oriented lesser trochanter and with the clade reuniting tritylodontids, brasilodontids, and mammaliaforms (but excluding tritheledontids) the presence of a projected femoral head, offset from the long axis of the femoral shaft; a thin, plate-like greater trochanter; a distinct dorsal eminence proximal to the medial (tibial) condyle located close to the level of the long axis of the femoral shaft and almost in the middle of the width of the distal expansion; and a pocket-like fossa proximally to the medial (tibial) condyle. Saurodesmus robertsoni is most similar to tritylodontids, sharing at least with some forms: the relative mediolateral expansion of the proximal and distal regions of the femur, the general shape and development of the greater trochanter, the presence of a faint intertrochanteric crest separating the shallow intertrochanteric and adductor fossae, and the general outline of the distal region as observed dorsally and distally. This makes Saurodesmus robertsoni the first Triassic cynodont from Scotland and, possibly, one of the earliest representatives of tritylodontids and one of the latest non-mammaliaform cynodonts worldwide. Moreover, it highlights the need for revisiting historical problematic specimens, the identification of which could have been previously hampered by the lack of adequate comparative materials in the past. An articulated partial hind limb collected from the Pebbly Arkose Formation (Norian, Upper Triassic) of the Upper Karoo Group of Zimbabwe is described as a new taxon of sauropodomorph dinosaur. Musankwa sanyatiensis gen. et sp. nov. was discovered on the shoreline of Lake Kariba, on Spurwing Island in the Mid-Zambezi Basin. The holotype consists of a right femur, tibia, and astragalus, and can be distinguished from all other Late Triassic massopodan sauropodomorphs on the basis of numerous features, which form a unique character combination. Phylogenetic analysis recovers the new taxon as the earliest-branching lineage within Massopoda. Musankwa is only the fourth dinosaur to be named from the Karoo-aged basins of Zimbabwe and further demonstrates the high potential of this region for discoveries of new early dinosaur material. Very large unidentified elongate and rounded fossil bone segments of uncertain origin recovered from different Rhaetian (Late Triassic) fossil localities across Europe have been puzzling the paleontological community since the second half of the 19th century. Different hypotheses have been proposed regarding the nature of these fossils: (1) giant amphibian bones, (2) dinosaurian or other archosaurian long bone shafts, and (3) giant ichthyosaurian jaw bone segments. We call the latter proposal the 'Giant Ichthyosaur Hypothesis' and test it using bone histology. In presumable ichthyosaur specimens from SW England (Lilstock), France (Autun), and indeterminate cortical fragments from Germany (Bonenburg), we found a combination of shared histological features in the periosteal cortex: an unusual woven-parallel complex of strictly longitudinal primary osteons set in a novel woven-fibered matrix type with intrinsic coarse collagen fibers (IFM), and a distinctive pattern of Haversian substitution in which secondary osteons often form within primary ones. The splenial and surangular of the holotype of the giant ichthyosaur Shastasaurus sikanniensis from Canada were sampled for comparison. The results of the sampling indicate a common osteohistology with the European specimens. A broad histological comparison is provided to reject alternative taxonomic affinities aside from ichthyosaurs of the very large bone segment. Most importantly, we highlight the occurrence of shared peculiar osteogenic processes in Late Triassic giant ichthyosaurs, reflecting special ossification strategies enabling fast growth and achievement of giant size and/or related to biomechanical properties akin to ossified tendons. The Triassic–Jurassic Upper Karoo Group of the Mid-Zambezi Basin (MZB; Zimbabwe) includes a thick succession of terrestrial sediments with high palaeontological potential that has been neglected since the 1970s. Here, we review the Upper Karoo Group stratigraphy, present detailed sedimentological work and identify new vertebrate-bearing sites at several measured sections along the southern shore of Lake Kariba. These fossil-bearing sites fall within the Pebbly Arkose and Forest Sandstone formations, and are the first to be recorded from the region since the discovery of Vulcanodon karibaensis nearly 50 years ago. The unique and diverse assemblage of aquatic and terrestrial fauna reported includes phytosaurs, metoposaurid amphibians, lungfish, non-dinosaurian archosauromorphs and non-sauropod sauropodomorph dinosaurs. This improvement of Upper Karoo Group biostratigraphy is important in refining its temporal resolution, and impacts both regional and global studies. Finally, the new fossil sites demonstrate the palaeontological importance of the MZB and its role in providing a holistic understanding of early Mesozoic ecosystems in southern Gondwana. Pseudosuchians, archosaurian reptiles more closely related to crocodylians than to birds, exhibited high morphological diversity during the Triassic with numerous examples of morphological convergence described between Triassic pseudosuchians and post-Triassic dinosaurs. One example is the shuvosaurid Effigia okeeffeae which exhibits an "ostrich-like" bauplan comprising a gracile skeleton with edentulous jaws and large orbits, similar to ornithomimid dinosaurs and extant palaeognaths. This bauplan is regarded as an adaptation for herbivory, but this hypothesis assumes morphological convergence confers functional convergence, and has received little explicit testing. Here, we restore the skull morphology of Effigia, perform myological reconstructions, and apply finite element analysis to quantitatively investigate skull function. We also perform finite element analysis on the crania of the ornithomimid dinosaur Ornithomimus edmontonicus, the extant palaeognath Struthio camelus and the extant pseudosuchian Alligator mississippiensis to assess the degree of functional convergence with a taxon that exhibit "ostrich-like" bauplans and its closest extant relatives. We find that Effigia possesses a mosaic of mechanically strong and weak features, including a weak mandible that likely restricted feeding to the anterior portion of the jaws. We find limited functional convergence with Ornithomimus and Struthio and limited evidence of phylogenetic constraints with extant pseudosuchians. We infer that Effigia was a specialist herbivore that likely fed on softer plant material, a niche unique among the study taxa and potentially among contemporaneous Triassic herbivores. Impressions of vertebrate bodies or their parts, such as trace fossils and natural molds of bones, are a valuable source of information about ancient faunas which may supplement the standard fossil record based on skeletal elements. Whereas trace fossils of animal activity are relatively common and actively studied within the field of ichnology, and natural impressions of internal or external surfaces are a frequent preservation mode in fossil invertebrates, natural molds of bones are comparatively rare and less extensively documented and discussed. Among them, internal molds (steinkerns) of turtle shells are a relatively well-known form of preservation, but the mechanisms and taphonomic prerequisites leading to their formation are poorly studied. External shell molds are even less represented in the literature. Herein, we describe a historic specimen of a natural external turtle plastron mold from the Triassic (Norian) Löwenstein Formation of Germany–a formation which also yielded a number of turtle steinkerns. The specimen is significant not only because it represents an unusual form of preservation, but also due to its remarkably large size and the presence of a potential shell pathology. Although it was initially interpreted as Proterochersis sp., the recent progress in the knowledge of proterochersid turtles leading to an increase in the number of known taxa within that group allows us to verify that assessment. We confirm that the specimen is morphologically consistent with the genus and tentatively identify it as Proterochersis robusta, the only representative of that genus from the Löwenstein Formation. We note, however, that its size exceeds the size observed thus far in Proterochersis robusta and fits within the range of Proterochersis porebensis from the Grabowa Formation of Poland. The marks interpreted as shell pathology are morphologically consistent with Karethraichnus lakkos–an ichnotaxon interpreted as a trace of ectoparasites, such as leeches. This may support the previously proposed interpretation of Proterochersis spp. as a semiaquatic turtle. Moreover, if the identification is correct, the specimen may represent a very rare case of a negative preservation of a named ichnotaxon. Finally, we discuss the taphonomy of the Löwenstein Formation turtles in comparison with other Triassic turtle-yielding formations which show no potential for the preservation of internal or external shell molds and propose a taphonomic model for the formation of such fossils. Early archosaurs included a range of ecological types—from predators to herbivores and from terrestrial to semi-aquatic forms. Members of the family Ornithosuchidae, traditionally considered active predators, occupy a special position. Their characteristic jaw apparatus structure and the morphology of their postcranial skeleton suggest the development of a unique ecological type among archosaurs, namely, a medium-sized hyperanisodont macrophagous predator. Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) was established to preserve fossils from the Triassic Period. After long relying solely on external partners, an internal paleontology program was established consisting of permanent staff and appropriate facilities to manage these extensive resources, primarily through active collection and curation. Goals based on National Park Service (NPS) policies allow managers to guide internal research priorities and those of external partners, more effectively reducing repetitive studies and increasing collaborations. Student interns play a crucial part of this effort, and many have gone on to establish or augment paleontology programs at other institutions and federal agencies, developing new partnerships with the NPS. PEFO permanent staff grew as park and regional management recognized the utility of the program. PEFO staff collaboratively develop new collecting and laboratory processing techniques that preserve high quality data, including a public laboratory where visitors watch the conservation of fossil resources in real time, bettering public understanding while simultaneously furthering research goals. This program has published nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications over the last 20 years, highlighting Petrified Forest as one of the best places on Earth to learn about and understand the Triassic Period, and providing an example for other NPS units on how to best protect and promote fossil resources. We describe here new Late Triassic haramiyidan mammaliaform and reptile fossils from near the classic 'Microlestes' Quarry' at Holwell, Somerset, U.K., where Charles Moore discovered a huge collection of microvertebrates in the 1850s. Moore's discoveries included the haramiyid Thomasia (formerly 'Microlestes' and Microcleptes) for which he achieved worldwide fame. Subsequently, despite much fossicking by researchers at Holwell, few new identifiable specimens of mammaliamorphs and lepidosaurs have been recorded and these were by Kühne in 1939. The new finds described here from a bedded sequence, not from a fissure, add significantly to our knowledge of the Holwell tetrapods and to the Rhaetian terrestrial faunas of the SW U.K. Our discovery of haramiyidan teeth includes a previously unknown type of Theroteinus , a genus not previously recorded from outside of the St-Nicholas-de-Port locality in France. An archosaur tooth, possibly from a phytosaur, is also recorded. The new lepidosaur specimens add significant detail to the recently described 'basal' rhynchocephalian Penegephyrosaurus curtiscoppi as well as demonstrating that the global diversity of Lepidosauria in the Late Triassic remains incompletely known. Hypotheses of feeding behaviors and community structure are testable with rare direct evidence of trophic interactions in the fossil record (e.g., bite marks). We present evidence of four predation, scavenging, and/or interspecific fighting events involving two large paracrocodylomorphs (='rauisuchians') from the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation (∼220-210 Ma). The larger femur preserves a rare history of interactions with multiple actors prior to and after death of this ∼8-9-m individual. A large embedded tooth crown and punctures, all of which display reaction tissue formed through healing, record evidence of a failed attack on this individual. The second paracrocodylomorph femur exhibits four unhealed bite marks, indicating the animal either did not survive the attack or was scavenged soon after death. The combination of character states observed (e.g., morphology of the embedded tooth, 'D'-shaped punctures, evidence of bicarination of the marking teeth, spacing of potentially serial marks) indicates that large phytosaurs were actors in both cases. Our analysis of these specimens demonstrates phytosaurs targeted large paracrocodylomorphs in these Late Triassic ecosystems. Previous distinctions between 'aquatic' and 'terrestrial' Late Triassic trophic structures were overly simplistic and built upon mistaken paleoecological assumptions; we show they were intimately connected at the highest trophic levels. Our data also support that size cannot be the sole factor in determining trophic status. Furthermore, these marks provide an opportunity to start exploring the seemingly unbalanced terrestrial ecosystems from the Late Triassic of North America, in which large carnivores far outnumber herbivores in terms of both abundance and diversity. The strata of the American Southwest, particularly the Chinle Formation and the Dockum Group, are critical to our understanding of faunal diversity and evolution in the Late Triassic. In recent decades, these strata have informed the evolution of close dinosaur relatives, which remain poorly sampled and enigmatic in their geographic distribution. Here, we describe and discuss a new non-dinosaurian dinosauromorph assemblage from the Los Esteros Member of the Santa Rosa Formation at the base of the Dockum Group in east-central New Mexico. This assemblage includes hindlimb fragments assignable to Silesauridae and Lagerpetidae. Much of the lagerpetid material, assignable to Dromomeron, is of unusually large size. Based on a dataset of complete lagerpetid femora, we estimate a total femoral length of 221.9 mm for one partial femur, making it the largest reported individual. We also provide biochronological support that at least a portion of the Los Esteros Member corresponds to the Otischalkian land vertebrate faunachron through the identification of non-Mystriosuchinae phytosaurs. Subsequently, we question the presence of a bifurcated lateral ridge on the squamosal of all phytosaurs currently assigned to Parasuchus. This is the first Otischalkian fauna identified from New Mexico, and it reveals lagerpetids achieved large body size earlier than previously recognized. Our identifications expand the geographic and temporal range of non-dinosaurian dinosauromorphs in the American Southwest. The material presented here, in conjunction with an increasing number of Dromomeron specimens, demonstrates that non-dinosauriform dinosauromorphs could match or exceed the body size of many coeval dinosaurs. The Triassic of South America is known for its wide fossil diversity, which includes several terrestrial tetrapods, such as (but not restricted to) non-mammaliaform cynodonts, dicynodonts, early archosauromorphs, procolophonoids, pseudosuchians, and dinosaurs. However, carnivore archosaurs are rare from Brazilian Norian outcrops, being represented by sparse records of dinosaurs, one phytosaur, and some indeterminate isolated teeth. The São Luiz fossil site is one of Brazil's most iconic Norian outcrops, and a great diversity of fossils has already been found there. Most of them, however, are remains of small-sized taxa (less than 40 cm). Here, we describe an isolated tooth of a comparatively large archosaur from this site. The morphology of the new specimen indicates affinities with archosaurs, with serrations restricted to its distal carina and composed of sub-quadrangular denticles with a density of two to three denticles per millimeter. Despite being isolated, this new record adds information on the São Luiz outcrop diversity, indicating the presence of a still undescribed medium/large-sized carnivore. • The morphology of the new specimen CAPPA/UFSM 0050 indicates affinities with archosaurs. • This new record adds information to the vertebrate diversity of the São Luiz outcrop, Late Triassic from Brazil. • This new record indicates the presence of a still undescribed medium/large-sized carnivore for this locality. Members of the dinosaur clade Spinosauridae had numerous traits attributed to feeding in or around water, and their feeding apparatus has often been considered analogous to modern crocodylians. Here we quantify the craniodental morphology of Spinosauridae and compare it to modern Crocodylia. We measured from spinosaurid and crocodylian skeletal material the area of alveoli as a proxy for tooth size to determine size-heterodonty. Geometric morphometrics were also conducted on tooth crowns and tooth bearing regions of the skull. Spinosaurids overall had relatively large alveoli, and both they, and crocodylians, had isolated regions of enlarged alveoli. Spinosaurines also had enlarged alveoli along the caudal dentary that baryonychines lacked, which instead had numerous additional caudal tooth positions. Size-heterodonty was positively allometric, and spinosaurids overlapped with generalist/macro-generalist crocodylians of similar sizes. Spinosaurid crown shape morphologies overlapped with certain slender-longirostrine crocodylians, yet lacked molariform distal crowns typical of most crocodylians. Spinosaurid rostra and mandibles were relatively deep with undulating margins correlating with local tooth sizes, which may indicate a developmental constraint. Spinosaurines had a particularly long concavity caudal to their rosette of anterior cranial teeth, with a corresponding bulbous rostral dentary. The spinosaurid feeding apparatus was well suited for quickly striking and creating deep punctures, but not cutting flesh or durophagy. The jaws interlocked to secure prey and move it deeper into the mouth. The baryonychines probably did little oral processing, yet spinosaurines could have processed relatively large vertebrates. Phytosauria is a clade of large, carnivorous, semi-aquatic archosauromorphs which reached its peak diversity and an almost global distribution in the Late Triassic (c. 230–201 Mya). Previous phylogenetic analyses of Phytosauria have either focused primarily on the relationships of specific subclades, or were limited in taxonomic scope, and no taxonomically comprehensive dataset is currently available. We here present the most taxonomically comprehensive cladistic dataset of phytosaurs to date, based on extensive first-hand study, identification of novel characters and synthesis of previous matrices. This results in an almost twofold increase in phylogenetic information scored per taxon over previous analyses. Alongside a traditional discrete character matrix, three variant matrices were analysed in which selected characters were coded using continuous and landmarking methods, to more rigorously explore phytosaur relationships. Based on these four data matrices, four tree topologies were recovered. Relationships among non-leptosuchomorph phytosaurs are largely consistent between these four topologies, whereas those of more derived taxa are more variable. Rutiodon carolinensis consistently forms a sister relationship with Angistorhinus. In three topologies Nicrosaurus nests deeply within a group of traditionally non-Mystriosuchini taxa, leading us to redefine Mystriosuchini by excluding Nicrosaurus as an internal specifier. Two distinct patterns of relationships within Mystriosuchini are present in the four topologies, distinguished largely by the variable position of Mystriosuchus. In two topologies Mystriosuchus forms the most basal clade in Mystriosuchini, whilst in the others it occupies a highly derived position within the Machaeroprosopus clade. ‘Redondasaurus’ is consistently recovered as monophyletic; however, it also nests within the Machaeroprosopus clade. The greatest impact on tree topology was associated with the incorporation of continuous data into our matrices, with landmark characters exerting a relatively modest influence. All topologies correlated significantly with stratigraphic range estimates. Topological variability in our results highlights clades in which further investigation may better elucidate phytosaur relationships.

Marine reptiles and mammals are phylogenetically so distant from each other that their marine adaptations are rarely compared directly. We reviewed ecophysiological features in extant non-avian marine tetrapods representing 31 marine colonizations to test whether there is a common pattern across higher taxonomic groups, such as mammals and reptiles. Marine adaptations in tetrapods can be roughly divided into aquatic and haline adaptations, each of which seems to follow a sequence of three steps. In combination, these six categories exhibit five steps of marine adaptation that apply across all clades except snakes: Step M1, incipient use of marine resources; Step M2, direct feeding in the saline sea; Step M3, water balance maintenance without terrestrial fresh water; Step M4, minimized terrestrial travel and loss of terrestrial feeding; and Step M5, loss of terrestrial thermoregulation and fur/plumage. Acquisition of viviparity is not included because there is no known case where viviparity evolved after a tetrapod lineage colonized the sea. A similar sequence is found in snakes but with the haline adaptation step (Step M3) lagging behind aquatic adaptation (haline adaptation is Step S5 in snakes), most likely because their unique method of water balance maintenance requires a supply of fresh water. The same constraint may limit the maximum body size of fully marine snakes. Steps M4 and M5 in all taxa except snakes are associated with skeletal adaptations that are mechanistically linked to relevant ecophysiological features, allowing assessment of marine adaptation steps in some fossil marine tetrapods. We identified four fossil clades containing members that reached Step M5 outside of stem whales, pinnipeds, sea cows and sea turtles, namely Eosauropterygia, Ichthyosauromorpha, Mosasauroidea, and Thalattosuchia, while five other clades reached Step M4: Saurosphargidae, Placodontia, Dinocephalosaurus, Desmostylia, and Odontochelys. Clades reaching Steps M4 and M5, both extant and extinct, appear to have higher species diversity than those only reaching Steps M1 to M3, while the total number of clades is higher for the earlier steps. This suggests that marine colonizers only diversified greatly after they minimized their use of terrestrial resources, with many lineages not reaching these advanced steps. Historical patterns suggest that a clade does not advance to Steps M4 and M5 unless these steps are reached early in the evolution of the clade. Intermediate forms before a clade reached Steps M4 and M5 tend to become extinct without leaving extant descendants or fossil evidence. This makes it difficult to reconstruct the evolutionary history of marine adaptation in many clades. The Post Quarry, within the lower part of the type section of the Upper Triassic Cooper Canyon Formation in southern Garza County, western Texas, contains a remarkably diverse vertebrate assemblage. The Post Quarry has produced: the small temnospondyl Rileymillerus cosgriffi; the metoposaurid Apachesaurus gregorii; possible dicynodonts and eucynodonts; a clevosaurid sphenodontian; non-archosauriform archosauromorphs (Trilophosaurus dornorum, simiosaurians, and possibly Malerisaurus); the phytosaur Leptosuchus; several aetosaurs (Calyptosuchus wellesi, Typothorax coccinarum, Paratypothorax, and Desmatosuchus smalli); the poposauroid Shuvosaurus inexpectatus (“Chatterjeea elegans”); the rauisuchid Postosuchus kirkpatricki; an early crocodylomorph; several dinosauromorphs (the lagerpetid Dromomeron gregorii, the silesaurid Technosaurus smalli, a herrerasaurid, and an early neotheropod); and several enigmatic small diapsids. Revised lithostratigraphic correlations of the lower Cooper Canyon Formation with the Tecovas Formation, the occurrence of Leptosuchus, and the overall composition of the assemblage indicate that the Post Quarry falls within the Adamanian biozone, and not the Revueltian biozone. Stratigraphic subdivision of the Adamanian biozone may be possible, and the Post Quarry may be correlative with the upper part of the Adamanian biozone in Arizona. The genus Machaeroprosopus has long been considered invalid because the type specimen of the Late Triassic phytosaur species, M. validus, has been lost. Re-examination of the primary literature regarding the establishment of the Late Triassic phytosaur genus Machaeroprosopus demonstrates that M. buceros is the correct type species, not M. validus. Thus, the genus level name Machaeroprosopus has priority over the genera Pseudopalatus and Arribasuchus and all nominal species should be reassigned. Reassignment of these species to Machaeroprosopus satisfies the requirements of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) and preserves historical context. The recent discovery of Triassic tetrapod fossils in the Picket Wire Canyonlands of southeastern Colorado necessitates large-scale modification of the currently accepted stratigraphy of the area. The bone-bearing strata lie stratigraphically above a thick (∼80 meter [m]) eolianite historically identified as the Middle Jurassic Entrada Sandstone. The identifiable fossils include teeth and bone fragments of Late Triassic tetrapods, including metoposaurs, phytosaurs, and aetosaurs, recovered from thin (m-scale) discontinuous channels of limestone-pebble conglomerate deposited in a high-energy fluvial environment. Metoposaur bones consist of characteristically textured dermal bone fragments of the skull and pectoral elements, as well as a tooth. Phytosaur fossils consist of type C and B teeth, skull and jaw fragments, and some osteoderms. Aetosaurs are represented by several distinctive osteoderms, including some with evidence of prominent eminences and anterior bars. All identifiable tetrapods pertain to taxa known only from strata of Late Triassic age elsewhere, but none constrains the age of the fossil assemblage more precisely, although the assemblage is similar to lower Chinle Group assemblages of Carnian age (Otischalkian-Adamanian). The two most reasonable solutions to the discovery of Late Triassic index fossils stratigraphically above "Jurassic" beds are that the Triassic strata of this area have been mistakenly correlated with the Middle Jurassic Entrada Sandstone, or else the fossils are reworked into dramatically younger (Middle to Upper Jurassic) beds. The conglomerates are lithologically dissimilar from other Jurassic units regionally, but similar to Upper Triassic conglomerates of Wyoming (Gartra Formation) and New Mexico (Cobert Canyon Bed). Therefore, we consider the fossils to be in Upper Triassic strata. New lithostratigraphic data, including a composite measured section from the Picket Wire Canyonlands-as well as analysis and correlation of newly measured sections and others in the literature from south-central Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma, and New Mexico-suggest that the eolianite below the bone-bearing horizon and the finer clastic strata directly beneath the eolianite are best correlated to the Red Draw Member of the Jelm Formation. We correlate the bone-bearing conglomerates with the Cobert Canyon Bed at the base of the Chinle Group, described by previous authors as limestone and lithic-pebble conglomerate underlying the Travesser Formation in northern New Mexico. The gypsiferous and clastic strata overlying the conglomerates and below the Morrison Formation, ∼30 m higher in Picket Wire Canyon, are referred to the Middle Jurassic Ralston Creek (= Bell Ranch) Formation, a correlative of the Summerville Formation. These correlations extend the known distribution of Jelm Formation strata southeastward from north-central Colorado and south-central Wyoming and highlight the need for a major, modern restudy of this unit. Three small and gracile jaw fragments are recovered from the Boren Quarry, one of the lowest fossil quarries of the Upper Triassic Dockum Group of Texas. The specimens are referred to archosauromorphs, where the morphology of the dentary and teeth of two specimens resemble what is observed in basal saurischians. Growing numbers of early dinosaur fossils from the lowest quarries of the Dockum Group of Texas which correspond to the lowermost Norian raises doubts concerning early dinosaur dispersal during the late Carnian-early Norian interval and the first occurrence of North American dinosaurs which might have happened earlier than previously suggested. We document here a new taxon of sphenodontian, Whitakersaurus bermani gen. et sp. nov., that is also the most complete sphenodontian fossil from the Upper Triassic Chinle Group in the south-western USA and the first Chinle sphenodontian represented by more than a single fragmentary dentulous element. The holotype was recovered during preparation of block C-8-82 from the famous Coelophysis (Whitaker) quarry at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, and is the most complete small vertebrate recovered from the quarry. Detailed lithostratigraphy and geologic mapping demonstrate that the Whitaker quarry is in the Rock Point Formation of the Chinle Group, so Whitakersaurus is the first sphenodontian reported from this unit. Records of the phytosaur Redondasaurus at the quarry and elsewhere in the Chinle Group demonstrate that the quarry, and thus Whitakersaurus, is of Apachean (late Norian–Rhaetian) age. The sphenodontian specimen consists of incomplete left and right dentaries, a partial left? maxilla?, and impressions of a probable palatal element, all of which preserve multiple teeth. Whitakersaurus is distinct from other sphenodontians in possessing a unique combination of the following features: marginal dentition pleurodont anteriorly and posteriorly acrodont; pronounced heterodonty in dentary, with as many as 15 smaller, peg-like teeth anteriorly and several larger, posterior teeth that are conical and striated; faint radial ornamentation of posterior tooth crowns; presence of c. 19 dentary teeth; and absence of a distinct flange on posterior teeth. Numerous other details distinguish it from both more primitive and more derived taxa. Whitakersaurus, therefore, helps to document further mosaic evolution and an extensive diversification event of sphenodontians during Triassic time. Although sphenodontian taxa are relatively easily recognized, widely distributed, and common small- or microvertebrate fossils, the long stratigraphic ranges of taxa known from multiple specimens hinders their utility as index fossils with which to correlate strata across Pangaea. A paleoparasitological investigation of a vertebrate coprolite from the Huai Hin Lat Formation (Upper Triassic) was carried out. Five morphotypes of potential parasite eggs or sporocysts were identified in the coprolite by microscopic analysis using thin section technique. The rounded or oval shape and thick shell of one of the five morphotypes suggests that it belongs to nematode of the order Ascaridida. Systematic assignment of other morphotypes cannot be done in detail but suggests that the host was parasitized by different species of parasites. This is the first record of parasites in terrestrial vertebrate hosts from the Late Triassic in Asia and it provides new information on parasite-host interactions during the Mesozoic era. Preservation of soft parts (collagen fibres, blood vessels and cells) in extinct vertebrates is rare and usually limited to fossilized bone and cartilage. Well-preserved coarse collagenous fibre bundles embedded in a mineralized matrix of tendons, as well as numerous hollow, tubular structures consistent morphologically with fibril bundles, blood vessels and associated cells, were identified in ossified tendons of Late Cretaceous ornithischians from North America and Central East Asia. Detailed, high-accuracy imaging, along with spectroscopic characterization of those fibrous structures and comparison with ossified tendons of modern-day turkeys, support the proposition that physiologically driven tendon ossification is common for avians and non-avian dinosaurs. The examined soft parts were preserved through the pathway of iron-induced crosslinking and alumino-silification, documenting a variety of pathways for the preservation of soft parts, depending on the burial environment. For the first time, the structure of dinosaur fossilized tendons is analysed in detail, revealing shared histogenetic principles with modern birds and the nature of preservation. Archosauria originated around the Earth's largest biotic crisis that severely affected all ecosystems globally, the Permotriassic Mass extinction event, and comprises two crown-group lineages: the bird-lineage and the crocodylian lineage. The bird lineage includes the iconic pterosaurs, as well as dinosaurs and birds, whereas the crocodylian lineage includes clades such as aetosaurs, poposaurs, "rauisuchians," as well as Crocodylomorpha; the latter being represented today only by less than 30 extant species of Crocodylia. Despite playing important roles during Mesozoic and Cenozoic ecosystems, both on land and in water, Pseudosuchia received far less attention compared to the bird-lineage, which is also reflected in number and scope of histological studies so far. Lately, the field has seen a shift of focus toward pseudosuchians, however, and the symposium on "Paleohistological Inferences of Paleobiological Traits in Pseudosuchia" held during the International Congress of Vertebrate Morphology 2023 in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, is the latest proof of that. To put these novel aspects of paleohistological and paleobiological research into context, an overview of the non-extant pseudosuchian taxa whose postcranial bones were studied so far is provided here (c. 80 species out of a total of more than 700 extinct species described) and recent trends in pseudosuchian osteohistology are highlighted. Libognathus sheddi, a leptopleuronine procolophonid from the Upper Triassic Cooper Canyon Formation, Dockum Group, West Texas, was based on an isolated left dentary and partial coronoid. New material referable to Libognathus sheddi, from the Cooper Canyon Formation, provides new information on the cranial anatomy. This new cranial material includes the antorbital portion of a skull, a left maxilla and premaxilla, quadratojugals, and dentaries, including intact tooth rows in the upper and lower jaws. Libognathus shows autapomorphies including; dentary deep with ventral margin oblique to tooth row immediately from the symphysis at ≥23°; anterior projecting coronoid contacting the lingual surface of the dentary underlying the last two dentary teeth; reduced contact between the lacrimal and the nasal; suborbital foramen formed by the maxilla and ectopterygoid, excluding the palatine; a posterior supralabial foramen shared by the maxilla and jugal; a Y-shaped antorbital pillar formed by the palatine, and massive orbitonasale and facial foramina (shared with unnamed southwest USA leptopleuronines). Phylogenetic analysis indicates that Libognathus is a highly derived leptopleuronine procolophonid, closely related to Hypsognathus fenneri and other southwest USA Revueltian leptopleuronines, which fall out as sister taxa to Hypsognathus, a relationship supported by a maxillary dentition restricted anterior to the orbital margin, a possibly synapomorphic orbitonasale septum in the form of an "antorbital pillar" created by the palatine, an anteroventral process of the jugal, and the presence of a small diastema between the first dentary tooth and the more posterior dentition. Libognathus exhibits a possible ankylosed protothecodont tooth implantation with frequent replacement, differing from some other proposed procolophonid implantation and replacement models. Allokotosauria, a clade of non-archosauriform archosauromorphs with a broad diversity of body plans, plays a crucial role in better understanding the evolutionary history of early diverging stem-archosaurs. Here we provide a detailed redescription of Malerisaurus robinsonae, a malerisaurine allokotosaur from the middle Carnian-lowermost Norian lower Maleri Formation, Pranhita-Godavari Basin, India. The new anatomical information available from recently discovered and well-preserved skeletons of various allokotosaurs, such as Azendohsaurus madagaskarensis, Shringasaurus indicus, Puercosuchus traverorum, and Malerisaurus-like taxa, and their comparison with Malerisaurus robinsonae enriches our understanding of the anatomy of this species. To reassess the phylogenetic relationships of Malerisaurus robinsonae, we revised its scorings and included eight additional allokotosaurian species to the already most comprehensive phylogenetic dataset focused on Permo-Triassic archosauromorphs. We modified 70 scorings for Malerisaurus robinsonae and the new analysis recovered this species at the base of Malerisaurinae and this group as the earliest branch of Azendohsauridae. Pamelaria dolichotrachela is found as the earliest diverging non-malerisaurine azendohsaurid and sister taxon to the Shringasaurus indicus + Azendohsaurus spp. clade. Trilophosaurid interrelationships are well resolved, with Teraterpeton hrynewichorum, Coelodontognathus ricovi, and Rutiotomodon tytthos as their successive earliest-branching species. The position of Anisodontosaurus greeri as a sister taxon to Variodens inopinatus bolsters long ghost lineages in the Late Triassic trilophosaurid record. A disparity analysis of tooth crown morphology shows that Allokotosauria is the most disparate Permo-Triassic archosauromorph clade, exploring the almost complete range of basic crown morphologies. Teyujagua paradoxa is a remarkable early archosauromorph from the Lower Triassic Sanga do Cabral Formation, Brazil. The species was originally described from an almost complete skull and a few associated cervical vertebrae, and no further postcranial elements were known at that time. Additional fieldwork in the Sanga do Cabral Formation, however, was successful in recovering a fairly complete postcranial skeleton attributable to the holotype. Here, we describe this new postcranial material, which is composed of cervical, dorsal, sacral and caudal vertebrae, limbs, pectoral and pelvic girdles, ribs, and gastralia. The description of its postcranial skeleton makes T. paradoxa one of the best-known early-diverging archosauromorphs. The cladistic analysis performed after the scoring of postcranial data recovered T. paradoxa in the same position initially described, close to the node that defines the Archosauriformes. Teyujagua paradoxa shares morphological features with representatives of early-diverging archosauromorphs and archosauriforms, with certain traits demonstrating a mosaic of plesiomorphic and apomorphic character states. We also performed partitioned morphospace and disparity analysis to elucidate the morphological disparity and evolutionary patterns among archosauromorphs. Teyujagua paradoxa occupies a notable position, suggesting an intermediate morphology between early archosauromorphs and proterosuchids. Disparity estimates highlighted Pseudosuchia and Avemetatarsalia as having the highest median disparity, reflecting their diverse cranial and postcranial morphologies, respectively. Non-crocodylomorph loricatans, traditionally known as "rauisuchians," are considered as the top predators of the Triassic continental faunas that reigned before the emergence of the well-known theropod dinosaurs. In particular, Saurosuchus galilei is a large quadrupedal prestosuchid loricatan found in the Ischigualasto Formation from northwestern Argentina. Here, we reevaluated the braincase of S. galilei and present the first paleoneurological study based on the partial natural casts of the holotype and the digital cranial endocast of the referred specimen PVSJ 32. The braincase of S. galilei was here reinterpreted, identifying the sutures of the supraoccipital, otoccipital, basioccipital, parabasisphenoid, prootic, and laterosphenoid. A unique feature identified in the braincase of S. galilei is the presence of deep paracondylar recesses associated with pharyngotympanic pneumaticity, which has not been identified in any other "rauisuchians" so far. Most of the structures of the encephalon were recognized in the cranial endocast and natural casts including cranial nerves V-XII, olfactory bulbs, main blood vessels and sinuses, and inner ear. These structures allowed us to quantify some of its sensorial capacities and recognize that S. galilei had an enhanced olfactory acuity, with coefficients higher than those expected for its body size, a condition previously observed in living crocodilians and tyrannosaurid dinosaurs. Maximum individual body size in pseudosuchian archosaurs is not well constrained in the fossil record, but it may be influenced by a variety of factors including basal metabolic rate, evolutionary relationships, and environmental conditions. Body size varies among the Aetosauria in which estimated total length ranges between 1 m (e.g., Coahomasuchus kahleorum) and 5 m (e.g., Desmatosuchus spurensis). A new, very large specimen of the aetosaurian Typothorax coccinarum from Petrified Forest National Park in northeastern Arizona is nearly twice the size of all other known specimens of Typothorax and is the largest aetosaur specimen currently known worldwide. The specimen lacks co-ossified neurocentral sutures in the trunk vertebrae which may suggest that the individual had not yet reached skeletal maturity, yet smaller specimens of T. coccinarum exhibit partially or fully co-ossified neurocentral sutures in the same region. If body size correlates with skeletal maturity in aetosaurs, this discrepancy warns that timing of neurocentral suture co-ossification in aetosaurs may not be a reliable indicator of ontogenetic stage. Osteohistological observations of a trunk rib demonstrate that although PEFO 42506 shows a large body size, the specimen did not deposit an external fundamental system despite depositing as many as 19 growth lines, further indicating that it had not yet reached skeletal maturity. Thus, at least within Aetosauria, neurocentral suture co-ossification and skeletal maturity may correlate, whereas body size can be incongruent in comparison. Furthermore, this specimen indicates that non-desmatosuchin aetosaurs could exhibit large body sizes and suggests that some aetosaurs may have experienced indeterminate growth., (Published 2023. From Middle-Late Triassic continental deposits of the Timezgadiouine Formation (Argana Basin, Morocco), 17 lithofacies are identified, with alluvial fan, fluvial, floodplain and lacustrine associations. Invertebrate traces include Archaeonassa fossulata, Arenicolites isp., cf. Arenituba, Beaconites isp., cf. Camborygma, Cruziana problematica, Diplocraterion isp., Fuersichnus isp., Helminthoidichnites tenuis, Lockeia isp., Palaeophycus striatus, Palaeophycus tubularis, Planolites isp., Rusophycus carbonarius, Scoyenia gracilis, Skolithos isp., Spongeliomorpha carlsbergi, Taenidium isp. and Taenidium barretti. Additionally, rhizoliths were observed. Six ichnoassemblages were distinguished: overbank facies with (1) Rhizolith ichnoassemblage in a low-energy floodplain environment and (2) Scoyenia-Palaeophycus ichnoassemblage in crevasse splay deposits. The fluvial ichnoassociation is of moderate ichnodiversity consisting of the following assemblages: (3) Arenicolites, developed under higher flow velocities of active channels, (4) Taenidium-Scoyenia, formed by the colonisation of inactive channels, (5) Arenicolites-horizontal meniscate burrows, reflecting a rapid transition between active and abandoned channels and (6) Lockeia-vertebrate footprint, formed in littoral lakes. The Aglegal and Irohalene members indicate climatic shifts between arid dry, semiarid and subhumid in a dryland river environment. The sudden onset and the high frequency of lacustrine deposits in the lower Irohalene Member point to a rapid climate change from dry to intermittent wet and dry.
