Abstract

The thermographic phosphor ScVO4:Bi3+ is used to obtain time-resolved surface temperature measurements with sub- °C precision at 5 kHz. Measurements are used to study transient heat loss and flame-wall interactions (FWI) within a dedicated narrow two-wall passage (crevice) in an optically accessible fixed volume chamber. This passage emulates a crevice relevant in many technical environments, where FWI is less understood due to lack of detailed measurements. Chemiluminescence (CH*) imaging is performed simultaneously with phosphor thermometry to resolve how the flame's spatiotemporal features influence the local surface temperature. ScVO4:Bi3+ is benchmarked against Gd3Ga5O12:Cr,Ce, a common phosphor used at low-kHz rates in FWI environments. ScVO4:Bi3+ is shown to offer higher luminescence signal levels and temperature sensitivity as well as negligible cross dependence on the excitation laser fluence, improving the precision and repeatability of the wall temperature measurement. ScVO4:Bi3+ is further used to resolve transient heat loss for variations in crevice spacing and uniquely capture temperature transients associated with flame dynamics. Taking advantage of these precise surface temperature measurements the wall heat flux is calculated with crevice spacing of 1.2 mm, where flame extinction is prevalent. Abstract

This paper presents an evaluation of two commonly accepted Raman linewidth models typically used to fit CARS model parameters to data; the Modified Exponential Gap (MEG) and the Energy Corrected Sudden (ECS) models. The adjustable parameters in each model have been fit to published experimental linewidths, and comparisons are made to the various publications that have already provided similar adjustable constants. 215. Ultrafast multi-photon excitation of ScVO4:Bi3+ for luminescence thermometry

Abstract

We demonstrate a multi-photon excitation (MPE) scheme for luminescence thermometry using ScVO4:Bi3+. MPE is performed using a 37 fs Ti:sapphire laser pulse centered at 800 nm. Log-log plots of the phosphorescence intensity versus excitation power show that the 800 nm MPE of ScVO4:Bi3+ involves a 2- and 3-photon absorption process in comparison with a single-photon excitation (SPE) process at 266 and 400 nm. Spectroscopic investigation shows that with the 800 nm MPE and 266 nm SPE schemes, the emission spectra of ScVO4:Bi3+ are similarly characterized by emissions of the VO43- groups and Bi3+. MPE is advantageous to suppress fluorescence that interferes with the phosphorescence signal. We demonstrate this aspect for a ScVO4:Bi3+ coating applied on an alumina substrate. The luminescence lifetime is calibrated with temperature in the range of 294–334 K; the MPE scheme has an equally impressive temperature sensitivity (3.4–1.7%/K) and precision (0.2–0.7 K) compared with the SPE schemes. Abstract

Policy-makers have supported the resilience of the housing market by adopting rules to encourage prudent lending practices by mortgage lenders. These measures are often aimed at the traditional banking sector, while non-depository financial institutions or shadow banks have limited or no prudential regulations. Could this shift credit intermediation toward unregulated lenders? This paper evaluates the effectiveness of macroprudential policies when regulations are uneven across mortgage lender types. We look at credit tightening that results from macroprudential regulations and examine how much of it is counteracted by credit shifting to unregulated lenders. We also study the impact of monetary policy tightening when some lenders are unregulated. Our results show that the presence of unregulated lenders weakens the impact of the policies on house prices, household debt and output. We also find that leakage to unregulated lenders increases when monetary policy is tightened., Les autorités publiques ont favorisé la résilience du marché du logement en adoptant des règles qui incitent les prêteurs à avoir des pratiques de prêt prudentes. Ces mesures ciblent souvent le secteur bancaire traditionnel, tandis que la réglementation prudentielle est limitée, voire inexistante, dans le cas des banques parallèles ou des institutions financières qui n’acceptent pas de dépôts. Ces mesures pourraient-elles entraîner une réorientation de l’intermédiation du crédit vers les prêteurs non réglementés? Dans cette étude, nous évaluons l’efficacité des politiques macroprudentielles lorsqu’il y a des différences de réglementation d’un type de prêteurs hypothécaires à l’autre. Nous nous penchons sur le resserrement des conditions du crédit qui résulte des réglementations macroprudentielles et examinons dans quelle mesure celui-ci est contrebalancé par un déplacement de la demande de crédit vers les prêteurs non réglementés. Nous étudions également l’incidence d’un resserrement de la politique monétaire quand certains prêteurs ne sont soumis à aucune réglementation. Nos résultats révèlent que la présence de prêteurs non réglementés réduit l’incidence des politiques publiques sur les prix des logements, l’endettement des ménages et la production. Nous constatons aussi que le glissement en faveur des prêteurs non réglementés prend de l’ampleur en cas de resserrement de la politique monétaire.

Abstract

Air tour management plans for U.S. national park units are developed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Park Service (NPS). The FAA recommends pilots fly higher than 2,000 feet above ground level (AGL) over parks, wildlife refuges, and areas with wilderness characteristics. Management of air tours is important for mitigating visual and noise impacts. Understanding air tour travel patterns has been problematic because objective location data have been difficult to obtain. A newer technology, Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS–B), can be used to accurately track overflights. Prior ADS–B studies of air tours conducted limited analysis with respect to altitude characteristics. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine how overflights spatially vary across altitudes and determine altitude trends for primary flight corridors. Results suggest overflights trend along the east side of the park and 74.59 percent of waypoints within a 0.5-mile buffer around the park boundary had altitudes less than 2,000 feet above ground level (AGL). Results revealed that as altitude increased, overflight density decreased. Using hot spot clustering analysis, overflight lateral pattern differences were determined for altitudes lower than 2,000 feet AGL compared to altitudes higher than 2,000 feet AGL. This study also identified one primary flight corridor with average altitudes mostly below 2,000 feet AGL. Abstract

This position paper of the United Faculty of Florida argues that the state of Florida must become more active in the informational economy of the nation and the world or become a low-wage, semi-colonial area in servitude to centers of "informationalism." The paper begins by examining the economies of America and Florida. Next, the paper discusses high-technology's role in Florida's economy and this is followed by a discussion of how state universities can help to offset what are seen as Florida's disadvantages in drawing high tech firms to operate within its borders. One successful high technology related research center in Orlando, Florida is described as a model for what the state needs to establish in other areas. Next, the need to have greater numbers of Florida students graduating in more rigorous scientific and technical fields is addressed, as well as the state's need for more federal research and development funding. Discussion then turns to the educational role of the University of Florida and the role of Florida State University's Supercomputing Computation Center in advancing the state's needs in high tech development, as well as the development of high technology clusters. Abstract

Foreseeable game changing solutions to SSTs will allow for better universal access by better implementing features that are easy and intuitive to use from the inception. Additional robotic advancements will allow for better and easier delivery of goods for consumers. Improvements to artificial intelligence will allow for better communication through natural language and alternative forms of communication. Furthermore, artificial intelligence will aid consumers at SSTs by remembering the consumers preferences and needs. With all foreseeable game changing solutions people with disabilities will be consulted when new and improved SSTs are being developed allowing for the SST to maximize its potential.
