Males of I. powhatan, recently described by Szczytko & Kondratieff, (2015a), were successfully reared from larvae collected from Barnes Creek, a 4 th order tributary of the Uwharrie River. Previous to this reporting, I. powhatan was recorded only from Pennsylvania and Virginia. Szczytko & Kondratieff (2015a) considered the distribution of this species to be wider than they initially reported but material from adjacent states was unavailable for study. This first North Carolina record of I. powhatan resulted from attempts to rear and associate the larvae of I. zuelligi Szczytko & Kondratieff, 2015, another recently described North Carolina species. Whereas I. zuelligi was not reared from collected larvae, adult I. zuelligi males and females with eggs were collected concurrently from nearby low riparian vegetation. Isoperla powhatan males exhibit a unique and somewhat box-shaped aedeagus with a long, wide median band of sharp, stout golden-brown spinulae located between a pair of posteromesal lobes (see 42.7 and 42.8 in Szczytko and Kondratieff 2015a). In conjunction with the broadly rounded paraprocts and the unique head pattern, the identity of this species is unmistakable. Associated larvae and exuvia from reared specimens closely resemble a dark-form habitus of I. holochlora larvae. However, stable morphological characters for separating larvae of I. powhatan and I. holochlora remain elusive. Barnes Creek is the type locality for I. zuelligi. The stream lies in the Carolina Slate Belt Level IV ecoregion in the midst of the Uwharrie Mountains, a relict mountain chain located in the North Carolina piedmont. Much of the Uwharries are managed as National Forest and thus the greatest impacts to local waterbodies are from timber harvest. Wuia qinlinga gen. n., sp. n. is described from Qinling Mountains, Shaanxi Province of China, on the basis of male and female adults. The new genus is characterized by the unique features of male epiproct (lack of basal anchor, presence of unusually large paragenital plate and epiproct tip), dense sensilla basiconica patches on male terga VII–X and exceptionally large female subgenital plate. On the basis of morphology, no closely related Perlodinae genus can be assigned, although some characters may place it within the tribe Diploperlini. However, our studies show that epiprocts of Diploperlini genera are extremely variable, questioning the present concept of the tribe. An overview of distribution of Perlodinae genera in Asia, and a checklist of Chinese Perlodinae species are also given.

Many organisms with complex life cycles show considerable variation in size and timing at metamorphosis. Adult males of Megarcyssignata (Plecoptera: Perlodidae) are significantly smaller than females and emerge before females (protandry) from two western Colorado streams. During summer 1992 stoneflies from a trout stream emerged earlier in the season and at larger sizes than those from a colder fishless stream, and size at metamorphosis did not change over the emergence period in either stream. We performed two experiments to determine whether variation in size at metamorphosis affected the fecundity, reproductive success and longevity of individuals of this stonefly species and if total lifetime fecundity was affected by the number of matings. In the first experiment, total lifetime fecundity (eggs oviposited) was determined for adult females held in small plastic cages in the field. Males were removed after one copulation, or pairs were left together for life and allowed to multiply mate. Most copulations occurred in the first few days of the experiment. Females in treatments allowing multiple matings had significantly lower total lifetime fecundity and shorter adult longevity than females that only mated once. Multiple matings also reduced longevity of males. Fecundity increased significantly with female body mass at emergence, but only for females that mated once. While multiple matings eliminated the fecundity advantage of large female body size, number of matings did not affect the significant positive relationship between body mass at metamorphosis and longevity of males or females. In a second experiment designed to determine if body mass at emergence affected male mating success, we placed one large and one small male Megarcys in an observation arena containing one female and recorded which male obtained the first mating. The large and the small male had equal probabilities of copulating with the female. Copulations usually lasted all night, and the unmated male made frequent, but unsuccessful attempts to take over the copulating female. Our data suggest that selection pressures determining body size at metamorphosis may operate independently on males and females, resulting in evolution of sexual size dimorphism, protandry, and mating early in the adult stage. We emphasize the importance of interpreting the fitness consequences of larval growth and development on the timing of and size at metamorphosis in the context of the complete life cycle.

A new species of the genus Isoperla (Plecoptera, Perlodidae), belonging to the oxylepis species-group is described, and the male mating call is characterized. Its range falls within a small region of the Southern Limestone Alps which is well known to be one endemism-centre of aquatic insects.

The present study investigated to what extent measured dissolved metal concentrations, WHAM-predicted free metal ion activity and modulating water chemistry factors can predict Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb accumulation in various aquatic insects under natural field conditions. Total dissolved concentrations and accumulated metal levels in four taxa ( Leuctra sp., Simuliidae, Rhithrogena sp. and Perlodidae) were determined and free metal ion activities were calculated in 36 headwater streams located in the north-west part of England. Observed invertebrate body burdens were strongly related to free metal ion activities and competition among cations for uptake in the biota. Taking into account competitive effects generally provided better fits than considering uptake as a function of total dissolved metal levels or the free ion alone. Due to the critical importance and large range in pH (4.09 to 8.33), the H + ion activity was the most dominant factor influencing metal accumulation. Adding the influence of Na + on Cu 2+ accumulation improved the model goodness of fit for both Rhithrogena sp. and Perlodidae. Effects of hardness ions on metal accumulation were limited, indicating the minor influence of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ on metal accumulation in soft-water streams (0.01 to 0.94 mM Ca; 0.02 to 0.39 mM Mg). DOC levels (ranging from 0.6 to 8.9 mg L − 1 ) significantly affected Cu body burdens, however not the accumulation of the other metals. Our results suggest that 1) uptake and accumulation of free metal ions are most dominantly influenced by competition of free H + ions in low-hardness headwaters and 2) invertebrate body burdens in natural waters can be predicted based on the free metal ion activity using speciation modelling and effects of H + competition.

The diets of stoneflies (Perlodidae) and hellgrammites (Corydalidae) from the Gila River, New Mexico, were quantified and compared to diets of three native fishes that also occupy riffle habitats along with stoneflies and hellgrammites: speckled dace (Rhinichthys osculus); longfin dace (Agosia chrysogaster); desert sucker (Catostomus clarkii). The highest overlap occurred among corydalids, desert sucker, and longfin dace, which had diets dominated by amorphous detritus. Speckled dace and perlodids consumed less amorphous detritus, with nymphs of mayflies and larval black flies dominating their respective diets. Our results suggest moderate to high overlap of resources among invertivorous fishes and invertebrates. Although we found high dietary overlap between corydalids and two fishes, it is unclear whether amorphous detritus is a limiting resource that drives competitive interactions.

Egg characteristics uniting these species include a concave crosssection, well-developed collar, distinct ridges offsetting the cell impressions, and lack of an eclosion line (Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015). In addition, the egg has a biconcave profile with a lateral ridge (Figs. 13���14) opposite of the profile with the cross-shaped ridges (Fig. 15) and the anterior pole is slightly concave (Fig. 16). Comments. This is a new Alabama state record. This species is common in mid-order streams draining the Talladega Mountain region. Illustrated as an exemplification of Plecoptera in page 1420; Brinck 1954, p. 199; Illies 1966, p. 511, treated as nomen dubium; Kawai 1976, p. 40, treated as nomen nudum. Dictyogenus frequens (Matsumura): Kohno 1964, p. 34. This species is now treated as a nomen dubium and the status is still questionable. Matsumura (1907) described the characteristics of this species as follows: body dark brown, vertex of head and median line of prothorax yellow; wings greyish white and sub- hyaline, rather reduced venation, bearing 8 crossveins between media and cubitus 1, and 5 cross- veins between cubitus 1 and 2; legs and cerci dark yellow; body length 9-12 mm and wing expanse 27-33 mm long. Matsumura (1907) probably measured from dry specimens. Also, he commented that this species was as common as Nemoura japonica Matsumura at that time. The color looks similar to that of the genus Stavsolus, but no information on the locality is given in his description. Szczytko & Kondratieff (2015) placed I. sandbergi in the I. similis (Hagen, 1861) Group with I. bellona Banks, 1911, I. cherokee Szczytko and Kondratieff, 2015, I. distincta Nelson, 1976, I. major Nelson and Kondratieff, 1983, I. similis, and I. starki Szczytko and Kondratieff, 2015. The eggs of I. bellona and I. distincta remain undescribed. The combination of a concave profile and lack of a collar easily distinguishes the eggs of I. sandbergi from I. cherokee, I. major, I. similis, and I. starki. The eggs of I. major and I. similis are round in crosssection, possess a low raised collar, and lack a concavity (Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015, figs. 29.7, 51.15). The eggs of I. cherokee and I. starki have a concave profile but possess either a low, buttonlike collar (I. cherokee; Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015, Figs. 7.24���7.25) or a distinct, elevated collar (I. starki; Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015, Fig. 55.21). Comments. PubMed ID: 27395953, The stoneflies of Turkey are reviewed providing all known distributions and including new records. Additionally, ecological and biogeographical notes are given. The genus Taeniopteryx Pictet 1841 is reported from Turkey for the first time and 12 species new for the Turkish fauna: Leuctra joosti Braasch 1970, L. kopetdaghi Zhiltzova 1972, Protonemura rauschi Theischinger 1975, P. strandschaensis Braasch & Joost 1972, Nemoura asceta Murányi 2007, N. cambrica Stephens 1836, N. uncinata Despax 1934, Taeniopteryx caucasica Zhiltzova 1981, Brachyptera risi (Morton 1896), Pontoperla katherinae (Balinsky 1950), Siphonoperla neglecta (Rostock 1881), and Bulgaroperla mirabilis nigrita Zwick 1978. Protonemura bithynica Aubert 1964 and Nemoura turcica Zwick 1972 are recognized as full species. The previously unknown female of Leuctra marilouae Vinçon & Sivec 2001 is described. The type locality is also given for each species located in Turkey. The distributions of several rare endemic species are augmented by additional new records (Leuctra aculeata Zwick 1982, L. brachyptera Kazancy 1985, L. karcali Vinçon & Sivec 2001, L. kurui Kazancy 1983, L. marilouae Vinçon & Sivec 2001, L. sipahilerae Vinçon & Sivec 2001, L. theischingeri Vinçon & Sivec 2001, Protonemura bacurianica bacurianica Zhiltzova 1957, P. oreas Martynov 1928, P. spinulata Martynov 1928 (first confirmed records from Anatolia), P. triangulata Martynov 1928, Nemoura dromokeryx Theischinger 1976, N. martynovia Claassen 1936, and Brachyptera berkii Kazancy 2001. Several species previously reported only from females are excluded from the Turkish fauna: Leuctra minuta minuta Zhiltzova 1960, L. svanetica Zhiltzova 1960, P. dilatata Martynov 1928. Other species are also excluded from the Turkish fauna: L. fusca fusca (Linnaeus 1758), N. carpathica Illies 1963, Siphonoperla burmeisteri (Pictet 1841), and S. libanica Alouf, 1992. According to literature and our new faunistic data, 117 stonefly taxa representing 7 families and 24 genera are known from Turkey. Among them, 44 are endemic species from Anatolia. The name evanescens is derived from the Latin root word evani meaning ���disappearing��� or ���vanishing��� and the Latin adjectival suffix escens meaning ���becoming,��� or ���beginning to��� and refers to the seemingly vanishing pigmentation on the proximal portions of the wing veins, head and pronotum of the adult. Male. Macropterous; forewing length 9.0 - 10.0 mm (N=5). Body length 7.5 - 8.0 mm (N=5). Head and pronotum pale yellow. General body color pale yellow to light brown with light brown markings dorsally (Fig. 1). Dorsum of head unmarked except for dark pigmented ocelli (Fig. 2). Antennal scape pale yellow; flagellum progressively darkened toward apex. Pronotum unmarked; rugosities irregular, raised, pale yellow (Fig. 2). Femora pale yellow on proximal half, light brown on distal half, darkest on dorsal edge, covered with uniformly spaced, short, brown setae (Fig. 2). Tibia yellow to light brown, darkest on proximal dorsal edge, covered with uniformly spaced short, brown setae. Tarsi medium brown. Meso- and metanota mostly pale yellow, light brown on posterior margins. Wings pale; veins pale on proximal half, light brown on distal half. Terga pale yellow, posterior ⅓ light brown, darkest medially, sometimes forming a stripe; terga 1-8 with uniformly spaced brown setae. Posterior ⅓ of tergum 9 with moderately developed patch of sensilla basiconica (Fig. 3). Tergum 10 with a medial, posteriorly directed, pale, spade-shaped marking. Paraprocts short, broadly triangular, slightly incurved (Figs. 3, 7), scattered setae and sensilla basiconica scattered over dorsal surface, absent on apex; moderately sclerotized on outer margin; tips bluntly pointed and recurved (Figs. 3, 7, 9). Cerci pale yellow; terminal segments light brown; cercal segments with a single, long, stout, ventral hair at posterior margins. Sterna pale yellow; sternum 8 with a light brown recessed vesicle, 1.4X as long as wide; evenly rounded and expanded posteriorly, extending to the posterior margin of sternum 8 (Fig. 4). Aedeagus with a stout basal stalk, and ridge of short posteromedial spines. Basal stalk completely encircled by dense golden setae (Figs. 5-7); posteromedial area with a small, thin sclerite bearing ca. 10 short spines that are acutely rounded apically; posterior half of sclerite bearing stout setae (Figs. 7-8); area posterodorsal to basal band with small spinulae; areas posterodorsal and anterodorsal to spine bearing sclerite surrounded by scallop-shaped spine plates (Fig. 8). Female. Macropterous; forewing wing length 9.5 - 10.5 mm (N=5). Body length 8.6 - 9.2 mm (N=5). Body coloration and morphology similar to male. Sternum 8 with a light brown, broadly triangular, subgenital plate extending approximately ⅔ over sternum 9 (Fig. 10). Sternum 10 with a pair of light brown spots on the posterolateral margins. Ovum. General shape oblong (Fig. 11); cross section concave (Fig. 12); collar absent; eclosion line absent (Figs. 11, 12). Color light brown. Length 312 - 333 ��m, width 248 - 250 ��m (N=2). Chorion covered with reticulate, raised, thickened ridges, some not connected; fine punctations present between reticulations (Fig. 13). Micropyles positioned singularly on top of ridges near anterior third of egg body; openings usually expanded, doughnut shaped (Fig. 14). Male nymph. Body length 6.9 - 7.5 mm, (N=2). Preserved specimen yellow brown with brown markings (Fig. 15). Dorsum of head with a contrasting pigment pattern (Fig. 16); anterior of frontoclypeus unpigmented; anterolateral dark spots near frontoclypeal pale area (Fig. 16); small enclosed pale spot anterior to median ocellus; small, pale, oval interocellar spot anterior to epicranial suture, narrowly open along epicranial Y-stem; interrupting pale spots present on distal edge of lateral ocelli, open along epicranial suture (Fig. 16). Pronotum with dark irregular ring on either side of wide median pale area; a single pale spot within each ring; lateral margins of pronotum pale (Fig. 15). Abdomen with three longitudinal stripes, two wider lateral, one narrow median, each segment with eight dark spots in an anterior transverse row (Fig. 17). Lacinia unidentate (Fig. 18); lacinia tapering evenly from apical tooth and bearing stout marginal setae to near base; medial submarginal setae arranged in a close set row below apical tooth (Fig. 18A), no setae on outer surface of apical tooth as in other species of the group; submarginal setae continuous to near base; gaps between setae increase towards base; apical tooth approximately ⅕ as long as palm length. Mandible with 6 teeth and a deep cleft between apical and subapical teeth; most noticeable on dorsum (Fig. 19); dorsal apical tooth flattened, broadly rounded; interior edge serrated, ventral apical tooth acutely rounded (Fig. 19A). Diagnosis. Isoperla evanescens is placed in the I. irregularis group and is the only member of the group currently known to occur east of the Appalachian Plateau Physiographic Province (Woodward & Hoffmann 1991). Isoperla evanescens is superficially similar to I. decepta in general habitus, which also lacks all dark markings on the head, (fig. 12.1, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015). However, males of the two species are separable by the shape of the paraprocts, vesicle, details of the aedeagus, and pronotal rugosity pigmentation. The paraprocts of I. evanescens are broadly triangular and extend only slightly over the posterior margin of tergum 10 (Figs. 3, 7); the vesicle is expanded posteriorly (Fig. 4); the posteromedial sclerotized structure of the aedeagus is composed of a thin sclerite bearing setae and ca. 10 short spines (Fig. 8); additionally, I. evanescens lacks dark pigmentation on the pronotum (Fig. 2). Whereas, in males of I. decepta, the paraprocts are elongate and extend �� to �� over tergum 10 (fig. 12.3, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015); the vesicle is not expanded posteriorly (fig. 12.2, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015); the posteromedial sclerite of the aedeagus is a lobed structure that is deflected ventrally and is scattered with concentrations of stout sharp spinulae (figs. 12.6, 12.10, 2.11, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015). Additionally, I. decepta has medium to pale brown rugosities on the pronotum (fig. 12.1, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015). Females of I. evanescens can be separated by the unique combination of a pale yellow head in life, whitish in ethanol preserved specimens, pronotum without dark markings, and a broadly triangular subgenital plate (Fig. 10). Whereas, females of I. decepta have medium to pale brown rugosities on the pronotum and the subgenital plate is broadly rounded (fig. 12.4, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015). Ova of the two species can be separated on the basis of cross sectional shape and the presence of reticulate ridges. The ovum of I. evanescens has a concave cross section and possesses reticulate, raised, thickened ridges (Figs. 11-14). Whereas, the ovum of I. decepta is circular in cross section and lacks reticulate ridges (figs. 12.18, 12.19 Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015). The ovum of I. evanescens is most similar to I. nana (Walsh, 1862), but can be separated by the presence of inter-reticulate punctations (Fig. 13), which I. nana lacks (figs. 35.13-35.15, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015). Several specimens of I. evanescens that are deposited in the C.P. Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity had previously been identified as I. dicala Frison, 1942, which is regionally common and is often sympatric with I. evanescens. Recently collected material of I. evanescens with everted aedeagus has allowed the separation of these two species, which can be confused by the lack of usually dark dorsal head pigmentation. Males of these species without the aedeagus everted can also be separated by the differences in pronotal pigmentation and details of the vesicle. Isoperla dicala has dark pronotal pigmentation and a vesicle that is 3X as long as wide (figs. 14.1, 14.2, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015). Whereas, I. evanescens lacks pronotal pigmentation and the vesicle is 1.4X as long as wide. Females can be separated by the differences in the pronotal pigmentation and details of the subgenital plate. The subgenital plate of I. dicala usually possesses a medial nipple (fig. 14.5, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015), whereas I. evanescence lacks it. Eggs of the two species are not similar and can be easily separated by the presence or absence of a collar; I. dicala possesses a collar (fig. 14.13, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015), whereas I. evanescens lacks one. The present study investigated whether invertebrate body burdens can be used to predict metal-induced effects on aquatic invertebrate communities. Total dissolved metal levels and four invertebrate taxa (Leuctra sp., Simuliidae, Rhithrogena sp. and Perlodidae) were sampled in 36 headwater streams located in the north-west part of England. Using the River Invertebrate Prediction and Classification System (RIVPACS) taxonomic completeness of invertebrate communities was assessed. Quantile regression was used to relate invertebrate body burdens to a maximum (90th quantile) ecological response, both for all metals separately and in mixtures. Significant relations between Cu, Zn and Pb burdens in Leuctra sp. (Zn, Pb), Simuliidae (Zn, Pb), Rhithrogena sp. (Cu, Zn, Cu + Zn) and Perlodidae (Zn) and both taxonomic completeness (O/E taxa) and Biological Monitoring Working Party index scores (O/E BMWP) were observed. Correspondingly the obtained Cu-Zn mixture model an acceptable impact of 5% change in taxonomic completeness is expected at Rhithrogena sp. body burdens of 1.9 mu mol g(-1) Cu (121 mu g g(-1) Cu) in case of low Zn bioavailability (Rhithrogena sp. Zn body burden of 2.9 mu mol g(-1) or 190 mu g g(-1)), which will drop to 0.30 mu mol g(-1) Cu (19.1 mu g g(-1) Cu) in case of higher Zn bioavailability (Zn body burden of 72.6 mu mol g(-1) or 4747 mu g g(-1)). For Zn, 5% change in taxonomic completeness is expected at Rhithrogena sp. body burdens of 76.4 mu mol g(-1) Zn (4995 mu g g(-1) Zn) in case of low Cu bioavailability (Cu body burden of 0.19 mu mol g(-1) or 12.1 mu g g(-1)), which will drop to 6.6 mu mol g(-1) Zn (432 mu g g(-1) Zn) at higher Cu bioavailability (Cu body burden of 1.74 mu mol g(-1) or 111 mu g g(-1)). Overall, the present study concludes that invertebrate body burdens can be used to (1) predict metal-induced ecological effects and (2) to derive critical burdens for the protection of aquatic invertebrate communities.

On the very same day when the description of M. tiunovi was published, the first author encountered a color photograph of a similar stonefly in the recent monograph of Korean Orthoptera (Kim 2013). The image is included in a table to present orders related to Orthoptera, but even though it is small, the characteristic wing and head pattern of the species are obvious. Dr. Tae Woo Kim kindly provided us an original, larger image and informed us about the habitat and other circumstances where the photo was taken. Unfortunately, the specimen was not captured, but it was clearly identical with the type series. Dr Valentina A. Teslenko also confirmed its conspecificity. Although it is not the usual practice to publish stonefly records without voucher specimens, vertebrate biologists occasionally do, [e.g. birds, where even a new species was described without fixing type specimens Robb et al. (2013); however, disputed and put in synonymy by Kirwan et al. (2015)]. We take this exception because of the distinctive habitus of M. tiunovi, and the detailed agreement based on high quality photographs of the Korean specimen (Fig. 1) with that of the type specimens (Figs. 1���2, 4 in Teslenko 2015). We also note that color photography has increasing importance in the study of stoneflies, and photographic guides are already available (Stark et al. 1998, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015). The Korean specimen of M. tiunovi was found near a narrow stream resting on stones during daytime and showed weak flight ability. According to the latest stonefly reports from South Korea (Mur��nyi & Park 2011, Zwick & Baumann 2011), this is the 62th species reported from the country. Megaperlodes tiunovi Te sl e nk o s p. n. (Figs. 1���19) Description. Adult habitus. Sexually dimorphic, female larger than male. Mean body length from tip of the head to the apex of abdomen, males, 17.0���17.3 mm; females 22.0���26.2 mm. Wings slightly shortened. Forewing length, males, 15.2���16.0 mm; females, 19.8���21.8 mm; wingspan, males, 32.3���34.1 mm; females 42.8���46.8 mm. The front wing of male and female (Fig. 1) black, fumose, veins dark, in the middle with a contrastive white frosted spot, occupying about ⅓ of the wing length. The spot extends from R 1 to the posterior wing edge, lateral margins of the spot are indistinct, and veins in the spot paler. Wing venation includes an irregular net near the apex sometimes consisting of four rows of cells. Seven to ten cross veins between C and Sc; five apical veins between Sc and R 1 (Fig. 1). Rs with five apical branches. Nine to thirteen veins between М and Cu 2; four anal veins branching into six. Hindwing black fumose, slightly paler in the cord area, in males especially. Anal area enlarged and pleated, A 2 ���A 5 forked; A 5 with dark small spot at base. General body colour black with yellow spots; membranous ventral portions also yellow (Figs. 2, 3). Head and pronotum matt black, with sharply delimited bright yellow marks. Head with compound eyes wider than the pronotum; M-line smooth and distinct (Fig. 4). Interocellar area with a small tear-shaped bright-yellow spot, widest anteriorly. A small yellow triangle extends along the epicranial stem on the occiput (Fig. 4). A posterolateral reticulate callosity behind each compound eye. Antennae shorter than cerci, black; palpi dark brown. Head ventrally yellow brown (Fig. 3). Submentum almost square, with slightly rounded lateral margins, the submental gills very small to almost absent in both sexes. The pronotum rectangular, same width as the head width under the compound eyes, with narrow longitudinal thread-like median yellow band widened triangularly at the anterior pronotal margin as well as before the posterior pronotal furrow (Fig. 4). Pronotal rugosites smooth, the lateral fields matt. The arms of the mesosternal ridge meet the posterior corners of the furcal pits; suture between basisternum and furcasternum indistinct (Fig. 3). Abdominal tergites black, strongly sclerotized and covered by short colourless clothing hairs, only tergum 1 with X-shaped white spot medially, with a rounded inside black spot. Abdominal segments 1���5 divided laterally by yellow pleural folds, more distinct in females; posterior segments ring-shaped, entire, fully sclerotized (Fig. 3). Legs black except bright yellow joints (Fig. 2). Male. Abdominal tergum 8 black, slightly impressed dorsomedially; two submedial rounded swellings covered by short colourless hairs close to the posterior margin, especially apparent in lateral view (Figs. 5, 8). Posterior margin of tergum 9 with a medial triangular notch, which extends �� of the length of tergum 9, two posterolateral rounded swellings covered by short fine colourless hairs (Fig. 7); in repose tergum 9 hidden by tergum 8 and noticeable as narrow band with a triangular posteromedial notch (Fig. 5). Sternum 9 bears a scoopshaped subgenital plate extending backward and curved upward (Figs. 5, 6). Sternum 10 narrow, pale medially with two black lateral bands hidden by the subgenital plate in ventral view (Fig. 6). Tergum 10 entire, black, with median diamond-shaped yellow spot, covered by short fine colourless hairs (Fig. 7). In repose, tergum 10 tapers backward and caudally triangular, the paraprocts touch in contact dorsomedially, pressed against the lower face of tergum 10. In everted condition, a yellow membranous strip with rounded posterolateral edges protrudes from under the edge of tergum 10 and supported by a small medial conical peg located between the paraproct lobes and concealed by them in repose (Figs. 7, 8). The paraproct sclerite wide, heavily sclerotized basally, narrowed and bluntly rounded distally (Figs. 5, 6, 8). Eversible paraproct with lobe (EPL) arises from the base of the paraproct sclerite (Fig. 8). EPL large, inflated, ball-shaped basally, yellow and bears a long fingerlike projection, extended at the base and pointed towards the top (Figs. 6���8); ventral face of the projection membranous, the dorsal face covered by long thin brown-red sclerotized setae, more densely in the distal ⅓ of the projection (Figs. 8, 9). Both projections closely appressed, directed obliquely backward and upward (Figs. 6���8). Female. Sternum 8 black with a small pale spot anteromedially, a short transversal subgenital plate extending slightly beyond the edge of sternum 8 (Fig. 10), posterior margin of the plate with a weak medial notch separating two lateral lobes, slightly rounded posteriorly, covered by small setae (Fig. 10). Lateral margins of subgenital plate rounded. Abdominal sternum 9 black with pale spot medially, a pair of dark posterolateral sclerites looks like oblique bands directed to anterior margin. Abdominal sternum 10 and the blunt paraprocts unmodified and back. Egg. Trilateral (Fig. 11), 614 X 345 ��m with narrow anterior pole. The longitudinal ridges (maximal width 65 ��m) delimiting the three faces of the egg, densely covered by globular bodies (Figs. 11, 12). Each face additionally with a transverse ridge close to the posterior pole, also covered by globular bodies smaller and less dense, than on the longitudinal ridges (Fig. 11). A row of 3���7 micropyles near transverse ridge (Figs. 11, 13) on each of the three faces. Micropyle openings elevated above the chorion surface, rostral with rounded margins (Figs. 13, 14). Collar short, formed by medially projecting extensions of the three longitudinal ridges, each top of extension flaky, and petal-shaped, smooth on inner surface (Fig. 15). Collar delimited by rim on outer side basally (Figs. 15, 16). Anchor mushroom-shaped with short pedicel (Fig. 16); external surface pleated with globular bodies (Fig. 16). Internal surface of anchor as Fig. 15. The margin of the anchor covers the pedicel, not reaching the collar���s rim (Fig. 16). The chorion surface smooth (Fig. 14). Larvae. Mature female larvae 20.5���21.5 mm long (n= 2). General colour grey-brown with a pale pattern. Body covered by short brown clothing hairs. Antennae, cerci and ventral body side pale grey. Head wider than the pronotum with a large, triangular, pale spot in front of the anterior ocellus extending onto the clypeus, labrum pale (Fig. 17). M-line pale, distinct; interocellar area brown with tear-shaped central pale spot (Fig. 17). A small triangular pale spot laterally from each posterior ocellus and the tentorial callosities pale. Occiput with a large triangular pale spot around the epicranial stem, two pairs of pale spots bordered by sinuate brownish rims behind each eye. No postocular spinule row. Lacinia unidentate (Fig. 18), narrow apically, pointed and well sclerotized, basal �� expanded. Submarginal setae absent. Galea reaches more than �� of the lacinia length. Mandible (Fig. 19) simple, not deeply cleft, with medial setae; mandibular teeth without serrations; a small patch of acanthae basally from the last tooth. Submentum square with almost straight lateral margins; submental gills very short or almost absent. Pronotum trapeziform, transverse with rounded angles; anterior margin wider than posterior one; median, dorsal stripe pale, narrow, slightly wider posteriorly, a pale reticulate stripe presents on each lateral field of pronotum; pronotal margins without fringe of bristles (Fig. 17). Legs pale-grey, femur ventrally in distal �� with elongate brownish mark. Outer margins of femur, tibia and tarsus with a fringe of colourless silky hairs. Abdominal segments 1���5 divided by hairless pleural membranes. Terga with a few colourless long hairs posteriomedially, more pronounced on the last terga; the bristles at posterior tergal margins not detected. Terga brown with irregular yellow median band, the brown edge in front of it with three prominent dark spots; the distinct caudal setae present on terga 8 and 9; the pattern on terga 9 and 10 diffuse (Fig. 17). All abdominal terga covered by brown clothing hairs. Paraprocts normal length, apex rounded. Cerci pale greyish with dorsal fringe of fine, silky, colourless hairs (Fig. 17) increasing in length towards apical cercal segments, each cercal segment with an apical whorl of short brown setae. The species is named in honor of the ornithologist Ivan M. Tiunov, who also made significant contributions to the knowledge of the stonefly and mayfly fauna of the Russian Far East. Distribution. The new species is known from the small foothill salmonid stream, the Brus���ya River. This stream is located in the South Russian Far East in the Primorsky Region near the border with China and Korea. The Brus���ya River flows out from the East Manchurian Mountains to the Peter the Great Bay of the Sea of Japan. The type locality is situated about 5 km from the mouth (Fig. 20). Water temperature at the time of collection (12 of May 2014 at 12 am) was 3.8��C. Remarks. Megaperlodes tiunovi is smaller in size than M. niger and differs in number of the abdominal segments divided laterally by yellow pleural folds, segments 1���5 are divided in M. tiunovi, whereas segments 1���6 are divided laterally by pleural folds in M. niger. The front wing M. tiunovi is black with a contrasting white frosted spot medially (Fig. 1), the front wing M. niger (Fig. 21) lacks a spot. The male of M. niger lacks a median yellow spot on tergum 10. In everted condition, the posterior margin of tergum 10 of M. niger appears like a long transversal slightly sclerotized sclerite with rounded lateral margins (Fig. 23). The paraproct sclerite of M. niger is larger than in M. tiunovi and completely heavily sclerotized, with the base hemispherical, the sclerite long, medially narrowed, and then widened and distally bluntly rounded (Figs. 23, 25). The rectangular base of the EPL of M. niger has a long fingerlike projection, narrowed from base to the pointed tip (Figs. 23, 25), and densely covered by short setae (Fig. 24). The female subgenital plate of M. niger is caudally rounded and covered by short setae (Fig. 26). The egg of M. niger has a wider anterior pole with an entire collar (Figs. 27, 28). Each egg face has medially an additional hemispherical swelling (Fig. 27); the micropyles are shorter than in M. tiunovi, slightly elevated above the chorion surface, openings with rounded margins (Figs. 29, 30). Szczytko & Kondratieff (2015) noted the inclusion of this recently-described species from Kentucky.

Megaperlodes tiunovi Teslenko 2015 (Fig. 1) Megaperlodes tiunovi Teslenko 2015:554. (original description of male, female and larva). Type locality: Russia, Primorye, Brus’ya River at Bamburovo New record (photograph): SOUTH KOREA: Gangwon Province, Inje-gun, Girin-myeon, Bangdong-ri, (Mt.) Bangtaesan, N37°56’33.73” E128°22’55.76”, 06.v.2010, T. W. Kim. On the very same day when the description of M. tiunovi was published, the first author encountered a color photograph of a similar stonefly in the recent monograph of Korean Orthoptera (Kim 2013). The image is included in a table to present orders related to Orthoptera, but even though it is small, the characteristic wing and head pattern of the species are obvious. Dr. Tae Woo Kim kindly provided us an original, larger image and informed us about the habitat and other circumstances where the photo was taken. Unfortunately, the specimen was not captured, but it was clearly identical with the type series. Dr Valentina A. Teslenko also confirmed its conspecificity. Although it is not the usual practice to publish stonefly records without voucher specimens, vertebrate biologists occasionally do, [e.g. birds, where even a new species was described without fixing type specimens Robb et al. (2013); however, disputed and put in synonymy by Kirwan et al. (2015)]. We take this exception because of the distinctive habitus of M. tiunovi, and the detailed agreement based on high quality photographs of the Korean specimen (Fig. 1) with that of the type specimens (Figs. 1–2, 4 in Teslenko 2015). We also note that color photography has increasing importance in the study of stoneflies, and photographic guides are already available (Stark et al. 1998, Szczytko & Kondratieff 2015). The Korean specimen of M. tiunovi was found near a narrow stream resting on stones during daytime and showed weak flight ability. According to the latest stonefly reports from South Korea (Murányi & Park 2011, Zwick & Baumann 2011), this is the 62th species reported from the country. To explain this range extension we provide a map on the known distribution of the two Megaperlodes species (Fig. 2).

The drumming signals of seven California stonefly species from the family Perlodidae are reported. Drumming descriptions are improved by graphing each of the signal's individual intervals (or interval pattern) and the determination of signal type (monophasic, varied beat-interval, diphasic and grouped) is based upon these graphs. Signals are described for the first time for two species: Baumanella alameda (Needham & Claassen) and Cultus pilatus (Frison). New signal characters and signals from additional locations are provided for five species: Calliperla luctuosa (Banks), Chernokrilus misnomus (Claassen), Cosumnoperla hypocrena Szczytko & Bottorff, Osobenus yakimae (Hoppe), and Rickera sorpta (Needham & Claassen).

Samples of stoneflies were collected from 15 streams of Slovakia during 1976–2000. The model of growth rate is based on 219 data of 50 stonefly species. The non-linear relationship among growth rate (G) of stoneflies and monthly mean water temperature (T) and body mass (W) is described by equation: G = 0.014W −0.19 T 0.25. The model estimates the species production of the families Taeniopterygidae, Nemouridae, Capniidae, Leuctridae and Perlodidae. This model is combined with Morin’s & Dumont’s (1994) model for Perlidae and Chloroperlidae. There is positive evidence that the total stonefly production of mountain and submountain streams increases with discharge. On the other hand, increasing altitude has a negative influence on production.

We have studied some aspects of Besdolus ravizzarum biology in the Apennines. This stonefly has a very localized distribution in southeastern France and northern Italy. This species is considered threatened. For this reason it is especially relevant to improve knowledge about its natural history, previously unknown. Despite the large size of nymphs, this species shows a univoltine life cycle. The growth is slow but uniform from October to April or May when the short flight period occurs. The analysis of the gut contents indicates this species is a predator, feeding mainly on Baetidae and Chironomidae. It is notable that the development of this carnivorous species through cold periods coincides with the season with higher richness and density of potential prey in Apennine streams. Further studies are needed to improve knowledge of the distribution of the species and to start planning effective conservation efforts.

Feeding habits of larval Isoperla carbonaria Aubert, 1953 have been investigated in the Rio Alpetto, an Alpine creek of northwestern Italy. This species is characterised by relatively small size and rheophilous habits, and inhabits streams above 350 m a.s.l. in the Alps, Apennines and Sicily. In this study, we analysed the gut contents of 72 larvae of this species, with the aim of investigating feeding preferences and to assessing the existence of size-related shifts in the trophic spectrum. Larvae were collected from a single reach, whose benthic coenosis was also determined. We detected evident trophic preferences in the diet: few taxa constituted the greatest part of the ingested items, independently from their availability in the substratum. Moreover, we observed that largest larvae fed on a broader number of taxa. These findings are discussed and compared with data obtained from other Systellognatha species.

A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to investigate the morphology and distribution of setae and hairs on the larval mid leg femur, tibia, and third tarsomere in representatives of six genera of Perlodidae and Perlidae. On the ventral surfaces of these leg segments we observed previously described clothing hairs, spine-like setae, and pinnate setae. We describe for the first time a new type of seta that we refer to as candle-like seta. Distinct differences in the distribution of hairs and setae are exhibited between the two families. Perlidae have hairy legs and on the femur the percentage of setae as compared to that of the clothing hairs is very high. Perlodidae are less hairy and on the femur the percentage of setae as compared to clothing hairs is much lower. Additional distinguishing characters have been found in nymphs of the stoneflies Megarcys ochracea and M. magnilobus. A previously unknown nymph of M. pseudochracea is described and illustrated. A key to the Palaearctic species is based on differences in the body color pattern, chaetotaxy, and size of the submental, supracoxal, and meso- and metathoracic gills. New data on the biology and distribution of M. ochracea and M. magnilobus are presented.
