A practical strategy for obtaining novel 5-seleno-substituted spirocyclopenta[b]pyridines-2,5-dien-4-ones and benzo[h]quinolines via radical cyclization is reported. The synthetic protocol explores the reaction between arylethynylpyridines and diorganyl diselenides in acetonitrile as solvent and Oxone® as oxidant at 82 °C. This easy-to-handle, eco-friendly metal-free approach was carried out under an open atmosphere, affording functionalized organoselenium compounds in good to excellent yields. Herein, we describe the use of benzeneseleninic acid derivatives (BSA) as a bench-stable and easy to handle selenium reagent to access 4-(selanyl)isoquinoline- N -oxides through the selenocyclization of o -alkynyl benzaldehyde oximes. The reaction is conducted in refluxing methanol, allowing the thermal generation of electrophilic selenium species in situ. By this new protocol, a library of 19 selenium-decorated N -oxide isoquinolines was accessed in up to 96% yield with an outstanding substrate tolerance and the feasibility to scale it up 10 times (from 0.25 to 2.5 mmol).

A wide range of 3-selenylindoles were synthesized via an eco-friendly approach that uses Oxone® as the oxidant in the presence of a catalytic amount of iodine. This mild and economical protocol showed broad functional group tolerance and operational simplicity. A series of novel selenylindoles bearing a benzenesulfonamide moiety were also synthesized and evaluated as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors of the human (h) isoforms hCa I, II, IX, and XII, which are involved in pathologies such as glaucoma and cancer. Several derivatives showed excellent inhibitory activity towards these isoforms in the nanomolar range, lower than that shown by acetazolamide.

In this work, we describe the synthesis of new 4-organyl-5-(organylselanyl)thiazol-2-amine hybrids through a one-pot two-step protocol. The transition metal-free method involves the use of ultrasound as an alternative energy source and Oxone® as oxidant. To obtain the products, a telescoping approach was used, in which 4-organylthiazol-2-amines were firstly prepared under ultrasonic irradiation, followed by the addition of diorganyl diselenides and Oxone®. Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms playing a pivotal role in primary production in aquatic ecosystems, sustaining the entry of carbon in the biosphere. Microalgae have also been recognized as sustainable source of biomass to complement crops. For this objective they are cultivated in photobioreactors or ponds at high cell density to maximize biomass productivity and lower the cost of downstream processes. Photosynthesis depends on light availability, that is often not constant over time. In nature, sunlight fluctuates over diurnal cycles and weather conditions. In high-density microalgae cultures of photobioreactors outdoors, on top of natural variations, microalgae are subjected to further complexity in light exposure. Because of the high-density cells experience self-shading effects that heavily limit light availability in most of the mass culture volume. This limitation strongly affects biomass productivity of industrial microalgae cultivation plants with important implications on economic feasibility. Understanding how photosynthesis responds to cell density is informative to assess functionality in the inhomogeneous light environment of industrial photobioreactors. In this work we exploited a high-sensitivity Clark electrode to measure microalgae photosynthesis and compare cultures with different densities, using Nannochloropsis as model organism. Herein, we describe a new method for the synthesis of α-carbonyl selenocyanates by reacting triselenium dicyanide (TSD) and styrenes under blue light irradiation and O 2 atmosphere. The reactions are triggered by the formation of Se-centered radical species, followed by the addition/oxidation of the styrene π-bond. α-Carbonyl selenocyanates and α-hydroxy selenocyanates were obtained in moderate to excellent yields from aryl- and alkyl-substituted alkenes, respectively. It was demonstrated that α-carbonyl selenocyanates could be used as a synthetic platform in a multicomponent reaction strategy to prepare 2-phenylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives, which were evaluated for their photophysical properties. Overall, this new method provides a useful tool for synthesizing α-carbonyl selenocyanates, and demonstrates their potential for use in the synthesis of other compounds, thus giving new synthetic opportunities to construct organic selenocyanate compounds., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

TIAR, is a nucleic acid binding protein involved in the formation of cytoplasmic foci known as stress granules, in which mRNA translation is temporarily blocked in response to stressful conditions. TIAR is used as stress granules molecular marker in vertebrates, but it is not so deeply investigated in invertebrates, especially in marine organisms. In the present work, we investigated the role of TIAR in the colonial ascidian Botryllus schlosseri during its non-embryonic development, featured by the cyclical renewal of the colony. We studied the extent of transcription during the colonial blastogenetic cycle and the location of the transcripts in Botryllus tissues. Using an anti-TIAR antibody specific for ascidians, by immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry assays, we studied the expression of the protein in haemolymph cells and body tissues and by transmission electron microscopy we identified its subcellular localisation. The anti-TIAR antibody was also microinjected in the circulatory system of B. schlosseri to study its effect on non-embryonic development and immune responses. Results indicate a delay in the progression of the blastogenetic cycle in injected colonies. A general methodology to access valuable 4-(phenylchalcogenyl)tetrazolo[1,5- a ]quinolines was developed by the reaction of 2-azidobenzaldehyde with phenylchalcogenylacetonitriles (sulfur and selenium) in the presence of potassium carbonate (20 mol%) as a catalyst. The reactions were conducted using a mixture of dimethylsulfoxide and water (7:3) as solvent at 80 °C for 4 h. This new methodology presents a good functional group tolerance to electron-deficient and electron-rich substituents, affording a total of twelve different 4-(phenylchalcogenyl)tetrazolo[1,5- a ]quinolines selectively in moderate to excellent yields. The structure of the synthesized 4-(phenylselanyl)tetrazolo[1,5- a ]quinoline was confirmed by X-ray analysis.

Life on earth depends on photosynthetic primary producers that exploit sunlight to fix CO 2 into biomass. Approximately half of global primary production is associated with microalgae living in aquatic environments. Microalgae also represent a promising source of biomass to complement crop cultivation, and they could contribute to the development of a more sustainable bioeconomy. Photosynthetic organisms evolved multiple mechanisms involved in the regulation of photosynthesis to respond to highly variable environmental conditions. While essential to avoid photodamage, regulation of photosynthesis results in dissipation of absorbed light energy, generating a complex trade-off between protection from stress and light-use efficiency. This work investigates the impact of the xanthophyll cycle, the light-induced reversible conversion of violaxanthin into zeaxanthin, on the protection from excess light and on biomass productivity in the marine microalgae of the genus Nannochloropsis. Zeaxanthin is shown to have an essential role in protection from excess light, contributing to the induction of nonphotochemical quenching and scavenging of reactive oxygen species. On the contrary, the overexpression of zeaxanthin epoxidase enables a faster reconversion of zeaxanthin to violaxanthin that is shown to be advantageous for biomass productivity in dense cultures in photobioreactors. These results demonstrate that zeaxanthin accumulation is critical to respond to strong illumination, but it may lead to unnecessary energy losses in light-limiting conditions and accelerating its reconversion to violaxanthin provides an advantage for biomass productivity in microalgae.

Introduction: There are abundant studies on headache and migraine in women but few or none about their occurrence during labor, delivery, and postpartum (2 hours after delivery) owing to the low incidence. A headache attack can be debilitating when a woman is trying to manage labor pain. Research at our Women's Headache Center within the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics has begun to shed light on this potential association., Methods: For the present study 474 women with singleton pregnancy were enrolled. A headache questionnaire was administered at two time points. Headache history was investigated on admission to prenatal care at 36 weeks gestation. The women were followed by a midwife who monitored labor progression and recorded the onset and features of headache pain. During examination before hospital discharge at 3 days post-delivery, the headache questionnaire was reviewed by a headache specialist who differentiated headache type according to International Classification of Headache Disorders (3rd edition) criteria., Results: Data analysis showed that 145/474 women had a history of headache: 65/145 (44.82%) reported a diagnosis of migraine. Eight reported experiencing a probable migraine attack (4 with aura) and one reported probable tension-type headache during labor or postpartum. All nine women who reported migraine/headache attack during labor had no previous history of headache or neurological illness. All had vaginal delivery. We report a strategy for the direct synthesis of 3-organylselanylthiochromones and 3-organylselanylchromones via the radical cyclization reaction between alkynyl aryl ketones containing an ortho -thiopropyl/methoxy group and diorganyl diselenides promoted by Oxone®. This method allows the construction and seleno -functionalization of thiochromones and chromones using Oxone® as a stable and non-hazardous oxidizing agent in the presence of CH 3 CN at 82 °C. These reactions tolerate a variety of substituents, and allowed the synthesis of twenty-one new 3-organylselanylthiochromones and selanylchromones in good to excellent yields (55-95%). Additionally, the developed method proved to be suitable for scale up (3.0 mmol, 80%), and the synthetic usefulness of the prepared compounds was demonstrated in the oxidation of 2-phenyl-3-(phenylselanyl)-4 H -thiochromen-4-one.

We describe here for the first time the synthesis of 2-(chalcogenyl)-3 H -benzo[ f ]chromenes and the new 3-(phenylselanyl)-2 H -chromenes by the radical or electrophilic cyclization of propargylic aryl ethers in the presence of diorganyl diselenides or ditellurides using Oxone as a green oxidant and acetonitrile as solvent in a sealed tube at 100 °C. In this study, thirty-one chalcogenylchromenes with a broad substrate scope were prepared in moderate to excellent yields (50-98%), including compounds derived from natural products.

The present study reports a simple two-step method for the synthesis of arylselanyl hydrazide derivatives using hypophosphorous acid and polyethylene glycol (H 3 PO 2 /PEG-400) as an alternative reducing system and hydrazine hydrate (NH 2 NH 2 ⋅xH 2 O/50-60 %). This single-vessel procedure was employed with methyl acrylate 2a and methyl bromoacetate 2b using diaryl diselenides to generate the nucleophile species to produce, respectively, 3-(arylselanyl)propane-hydrazides 4a-e and 2-(arylselanyl)acetohydrazides 5a-e with good yields by accelerating the reduction of -Se-Se- bond, when compared to available methods. The synthesized molecules are structurally similar to the isoniazid (INH). Therefore, we perform in silico molecular docking studies, using the lactoperoxidase enzyme, in order to verify whether the INH Se derivatives could interact in a similar way to INH at the active site of the mammalian enzyme. The in silico results indicated a similar type of interaction of the arylselanyl hydrazide derivatives with that of INH. In view of the similar in silico interaction of the selenium derivatives of INH, the arylselanyl hydrazide derivatives reported here should be tested against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro., (© 2022 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland.)

A metal- and catalyst-free photo-promoted cyclization of properly substituted vinyl selenides was developed using UVA irradiation. A total of eighteen new C3-unsubstituted 2-selanyl benzochalcogenophenes (benzofurans, benzothiophenes and benzoselenophenes) were prepared in 30-86% yield after irradiation with UVA at room temperature. The usefulness of the title compounds was demonstrated in the easy functionalization of the remaining free C-H bond of the benzochalcogenophenes to form new C-Se and C-Br bonds by simple procedures. Microalgae represent a sustainable source of biomass that can be exploited for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetic applications, as well as for food, feed, chemicals, and energy. To make microalgae applications economically competitive and maximize their positive environmental impact, it is however necessary to optimize productivity when cultivated at a large scale. Independently from the final product, this objective requires the optimization of biomass productivity and thus of microalgae ability to exploit light for CO 2 fixation. Light is a highly variable environmental parameter, continuously changing depending on seasons, time of the day, and weather conditions. In microalgae large scale cultures, cell self-shading causes inhomogeneity in light distribution and, because of mixing, cells move between different parts of the culture, experiencing abrupt changes in light exposure. Microalgae evolved multiple regulatory mechanisms to deal with dynamic light conditions that, however, are not adapted to respond to the complex mixture of natural and artificial fluctuations found in large-scale cultures, which can thus drive to oversaturation of the photosynthetic machinery, leading to consequent oxidative stress. In this work, the present knowledge on the regulation of photosynthesis and its implications for the maximization of microalgae biomass productivity are discussed. Fast mechanisms of regulations, such as Non-Photochemical-Quenching and cyclic electron flow, are seminal to respond to sudden fluctuations of light intensity. However, they are less effective especially in the 1-100 s time range, where light fluctuations were shown to have the strongest negative impact on biomass productivity. On the longer term, microalgae modulate the composition and activity of the photosynthetic apparatus to environmental conditions, an acclimation response activated also in cultures outdoors. We report herein an alternative method for the synthesis of seleno-dibenzocycloheptenones and seleno-spiro[5.5]trienones through the radical cyclization of biaryl ynones in the presence of diorganyl diselenides, using Oxone as a green oxidizing agent. The reactions were conducted using acetonitrile as the solvent in a sealed tube at 100 °C. The protocol is operationally simple and scalable, exhibits high regioselectivity, and allows the synthesis of 24 dibenzocycloheptenones/spiro[5.5]trienones in yields of up to 99%, 17 of which are unpublished compounds. Additionally, synthetic transformations of the prepared compounds, such as oxidation and reduction reactions, are demonstrated.

The xanthophyll cycle in the antenna of photosynthetic organisms under light stress is one of the most well-known processes in photosynthesis, but its role is not well understood. In the xanthophyll cycle, violaxanthin (Vio) is reversibly transformed to zeaxanthin (Zea) that occupies Vio binding sites of light-harvesting antenna proteins. Higher monomer/trimer ratios of the most abundant light-harvesting protein, the light-harvesting complex II (LHCII), usually occur in Zea accumulating membranes and have been observed in plants after prolonged illumination and during high-light acclimation. We present a combined NMR and coarse-grained simulation study on monomeric LHCII from the npq2 mutant that constitutively binds Zea in the Vio binding pocket. LHCII was isolated from 13 C-enriched npq2 Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Cr) cells and reconstituted in thylakoid lipid membranes. NMR results reveal selective changes in the fold and dynamics of npq2 LHCII compared with the trimeric, wild-type and show that npq2 LHCII contains multiple mono- or digalactosyl diacylglycerol lipids (MGDG and DGDG) that are strongly protein bound. Coarse-grained simulations on npq2 LHCII embedded in a thylakoid lipid membrane agree with these observations. The simulations show that LHCII monomers have more extensive lipid contacts than LHCII trimers and that protein-lipid contacts are influenced by Zea. We propose that both monomerization and Zea binding could have a functional role in modulating membrane fluidity and influence the aggregation and conformational dynamics of LHCII with a likely impact on photoprotection ability., (Copyright © 2021 Biophysical Society. Oxone is a commercially available oxidant, composed of a mixture of three inorganic species, being the potassium peroxymonosulfate (KHSO 5 ) the reactive one. Over the past few decades, this cheap and environmentally friendly oxidant has become a powerful tool in organic synthesis, being extensively employed to mediate the construction of a plethora of important compounds. This review summarizes the recent advances in the Oxone-mediated synthesis of N-, O- and chalcogen-containing heterocyclic compounds, through a wide diversity of reactions, starting from several kinds of substrate, highlighting the main synthetic differences, advantages, the scope and limitations.

We demonstrate a compact and low-cost all-fiber-based locking setup for frequency-noise suppression of a 420 nm external-cavity diode laser. Frequency noise reduction in the 100 Hz to 800 kHz range is demonstrated up to 40 dB associated with a linewidth narrowing from 850 kHz to 20 kHz for 10 ms integration time. This simple locking scheme might be implemented for a large range of wavelengths and can be integrated on a small footprint for embedded applications requiring narrow linewidth blue laser diodes.

A new method was developed for the synthesis of 4-chalcogenyl-1 H -isochromen-1-ones through the 6- endo - dig electrophilic cyclization of 2-alkynylaryl esters and diorganyl dichalcogenides under ultrasound irradiation. The reactions were performed under mild conditions, using Oxone as a green oxidant to promote the cleavage of the chalcogen-chalcogen bond in diorganyl diselenides and ditellurides to generate electrophilic species in situ . A total of 25 compounds were selectively obtained after 30-70 min, in good to excellent yields (74-95%). This procedure was extended to prepare 5 H -selenopheno[3,2- c ]isochromen-5-ones. Additionally, for the first time, the 4-chalcogenyl-1 H -isochromen-1-ones were used as substrates in the thionation reaction, using Lawesson's reagent and microwave irradiation under solvent-free conditions, obtaining the thio derivatives in yields of up to 99% in only 15 min.

Despite major advances, not all patients achieve rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remission, thus highlighting a pressing need for new therapeutic treatments. Given this scenario, this study sought to evaluate Se-[(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl] 4-chlorobenzoselenolate (Se-DMC) potential on a complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced unilateral arthritis model. The effects of Se-DMC (5 mg/kg; oral dose) and meloxicam (5 mg/kg; oral dose), both administered to animals daily for 14 days, on paw edema, mechanical sensitivity, neurobehavioral deficits (anxiogenic- and depressive-like behaviors), Na + /K + -ATPase activity, oxidative stress, and inflammation were evaluated in male Swiss mice exposed to CFA (intraplantar injection of 0.1 mL; 10 mg/mL). Se-DMC reduced the paw withdrawal threshold and CFA-induced paw edema. Histopathological results revealed the antiedematogenic potential of the compound, which was evidenced by lower quantities of dilated lymphatic vessels compared with the CFA group. Se-DMC reduced mRNA relative expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) in the hippocampus and paw of CFA mice. The CFA-induced anxiogenic- and depressive-like behaviors were reversed by Se-DMC to the control levels in the elevated plus-maze and tail suspension tests. Se-DMC reduced the paw reactive species levels and restored the superoxide dismutase (hippocampus and paw) and Na + /K + -ATPase (hippocampus) activities previously increased by CFA. Moreover, CFA administration inhibited serum creatinine kinase activity, albeit the Se-DMC effects did not appear to involve the modulation of this enzyme and were equal to or greater than meloxicam. Se-DMC attenuates CFA-induced inflammatory response, nociception, and neurobehavioral deficits in mice.

The present review describes the successful application of organoboron compounds in transition-metal-free C-S, C-Se, and C-Te bond formations. We presented studies regarding these C-Chalcogen bond formations using organoboron reagents, such as boronic acids, boronic esters, borate anions, and several sources of chalcogen atoms/moieties. Moreover, a broad range of transition-metal-free approaches to synthesize sulfides, selenides, and tellurides were described using conventional heating methods, which are sometimes green since they use green solvents, safe reagents, among others. Furthermore, protocols using alternative energy sources, including ultrasound, microwave irradiation, photocatalysis, and electrolytic processes, were also shown to be suitable. These protocols were applied to prepare a broad scope of functionalized chalcogenides with high molecular diversity. Suppressive effect of bis (3-amino-2-pyridine) diselenide (BAPD) on psychiatric disorders - atopic dermatitis (AD) comorbidity in mice was investigated. To sensitize the animals, 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) was applied to their dorsal skin on days 1-3. Mice were challenged with DNCB on their ears and dorsal skin on days 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, and 29. BAPD and Dexamethasone were administered to the animals, from days 14-29, and skin severity scores and behavioral tests were determined. Oxidative stress and inflammatory parameters were evaluated on the dorsal skin of mice. Na + , K + -ATPase activity and corticosterone levels were determined in hippocampus/cerebral cortex and plasma of mice, respectively. BAPD improved cutaneous damage, scratching behavior, inflammatory and oxidative stress markers. BAPD showed anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects and restored Na + , K + -ATPase activity and corticosterone levels. The present study was performed using female mice due the susceptibility for this disease. But, the evaluation of AD model in male mice would help to verify whether the male gender has the same predisposition to present this pathology.
