201. Bias and Unfairness of Collaborative Filtering Based Recommender Systems in MovieLens Dataset

Abstract

Recommender Systems have become one of the most important tools for streaming and marketplace systems in recent years. Their increased use has revealed clear bias and unfairness against minorities and underrepresented groups. This paper seeks the origin of these biases and unfairness. To this end, it analyzes the demographic characteristics of a gold standard dataset and its prediction performance when used in a multitude of Recommender Systems. In addition, this paper proposes Soft Matrix Factorization (SoftMF), which tries to balance the predictions of different types of users to reduce the present inequality. The experimental results show that those biases and unfairness are not introduced by the different recommendation models and that they come from the socio-psychological and demographic characteristics of the used dataset.

Abstract

In 2020, the combination of police killings of unarmed Black people, including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, and the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic brought about public outrage over long-standing inequalities in society. The events of 2020 ignited global attention to systemic racism and racial inequalities, including the lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the academy and especially in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) fields. Racial and ethnic diversity in graduate programs in particular warrants special attention as graduate students of color report experiencing alarming rates of racism, discrimination, microaggressions, and other exclusionary behaviors. As part of the Graduate Dean's Advisory Council on Diversity (GDACD) at the University of California Merced, the authors of this manuscript held a year-long discussion on these issues and ways to take meaningful action to address these persistent issues of injustices. We have outlined 10 rules to help graduate programs develop antiracist practices to promote racial and ethnic justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) in the academy. We focus on efforts to address systemic causes of the underrepresentation and attrition of students from minoritized communities. The 10 rules are developed to allow graduate groups to formulate and implement rules and policies to address root causes of underrepresentation of minoritized students in graduate education.

Abstract

Fue evaluado el efecto de realcalinización electroquímica aplicando las normas UNE-EN-1504, NACE-SP0107 2007 y NMX-C-553-ONNCCE-2018, en muestras de concreto reforzado previamente carbonatadas. Con el seguimiento del grado de realcalinización, mediante mediciones de pH y potencial de media celda a 7, 14, 21 y 28 días, se observa la recuperación del pH en todos los casos, obteniendo valores de potencial de media celda característicos en cada aplicación de corriente, que confirma la polarización del acero modificando la condición termodinámica de la intercara concreto-acero y ocasionando cambios químicos en la pasta de concreto. Con la norma NMX-C-553-ONNCCE-2018 se polarizó el acero sin llegar a la región de sobreprotección, evitando el riesgo de producir hidrógeno y fragilidad en el acero

Abstract

Phytoplasmas are insect-vectored, difficult-to-culture bacterial pathogens that infect a wide variety of crop and non-crop plants, and are associated with diseases that can lead to significant yield losses in agricultural production worldwide. Phytoplasmas are currently grouped in the provisional genus ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma’, which includes 49 ‘Candidatus’ species. Further differentiation of phytoplasmas into ribosomal groups is based on the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) pattern of the 16S rRNA-encoding operon, with more than 36 ribosomal groups (16Sr) and over 100 subgroups reported. Since disease symptoms on plants are not associated with phytoplasma identity, accurate diagnostics is of critical importance to manage disease associated with these microorganisms. Phytoplasmas are typically detected from plant and insect tissue using PCR-based methods targeting universal taxonomic markers. Although these methods are relatively sensitive, specific and are widely used, they have limitations, since they provide limited resolution of phytoplasma strains, thus necessitating further assessment of biological properties and delaying implementation of mitigation measures. Moreover, the design of PCR primers that can target multiple loci from phytoplasmas that differ at the sequence level can be a significant challenge. To overcome these limitations, a PCR-independent, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) assay to characterize an array of phytoplasmas was developed. Hybridization probe s targeting cpn60, tuf, secA, secY, and nusA genes, as well as 16S and rp operons, were designed and used to enrich DNA extracts from phytoplasma-infected samples for DNA fragments corresponding to these markers prior to Illumina sequencing. This method was tested using different phytoplasmas including ‘Ca. P. asteris’ (16SrI-B), ‘Ca. P. pruni’ (16SrIII-A),‘Ca. P. prunorum’ (16SrX-B), ‘Ca. P. pyri’ (16SrX-C), ‘Ca. P. mali’ (16SrX-A), and ‘Ca. P. solani’ (16SrXII-A). Thousands of reads were obtained for each gene with multiple overlapping fragments, which were assembled to generate full-length (typically >2 kb), high-quality sequences. Phytoplasma groups and subgroups were accurately determined based on 16S ribosomal RNA and cpn60 gene sequences. Hybridization-based MLST facilitates the enrichment of target genes of phytoplasmas and allows the simultaneous determination of sequences corresponding to seven different markers. In this proof-of-concept study, hybridization-based MLST was demonstrated to be an efficient way to generate data regarding ‘Ca. Phytoplasma’ species/strain differentiation.

Abstract

Network-based methods are playing an increasingly important role in drug design. Our main question in this paper was whether the efficiency of drug target proteins to spread perturbations in the human interactome is larger if the binding drugs have side effects, as compared to those which have no reported side effects. Our results showed that in general, drug targets were better spreaders of perturbations than non-target proteins, and in particular, targets of drugs with side effects were also better spreaders of perturbations than targets of drugs having no reported side effects in human protein-protein interaction networks. Colorectal cancer-related proteins were good spreaders and had a high centrality, while type 2 diabetes-related proteins showed an average spreading efficiency and had an average centrality in the human interactome. Moreover, the interactome-distance between drug targets and disease-related proteins was higher in diabetes than in colorectal cancer. Our results may help a better understanding of the network position and dynamics of drug targets and disease-related proteins, and may contribute to develop additional, network-based tests to increase the potential safety of drug candidates., Comment: 49 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, 10 supplementary figures, 13 supplementary tables
