This article investigates the role of citizen political affinities in shaping attitudes towards judicial decisions in corruption cases involving politicians. Although emerging research suggests that decisions regarding a high‐ranking politician can reduce general citizen trust in courts, there is no systematic evidence examining how political affinities differentially affect confidence in court decisions depending on the accused politician. We conducted a survey experiment during a 2022 presidential election rally in Brazil at a time of heightened affective polarization and corruption. We presented respondents with vignettes detailing a fictional corruption scheme and trial outcomes (acquittal or conviction) involving key political figures, including Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Jair Bolsonaro. The results indicate that when a court decision is consistent with citizens' electoral preferences, they are more inclined to trust the court decision and vice versa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Packaging for food products is particularly important to preserve product quality and shelf life. The most used materials for food packaging are plastic, glass, metal, and paper. Plastic films produced based on petroleum are widely used for packaging because they have good mechanical properties and help preserve the characteristics of food. However, environmental concerns are leading the trend towards biopolymers. Films and coatings based on biopolymers have been extensively studied in recent years, as they cause less impact on the environment, can be obtained from renewable sources or by-products, are relatively abundant, have a good coating and film-forming capacity, are biodegradable and have nutritional properties that can be beneficial to human health. Whey protein-based films have demonstrated good mechanical resistance and a good barrier to gases when at low relative humidity levels, in addition to demonstrating an excellent barrier to aromatic compounds and especially oils. The use of whey proteins for films or coatings has been extensively studied, as these proteins are edible, have high nutritional value, and are biodegradable. Thus, the main objective of this document was to review new methodologies to improve the physicochemical properties of whey protein films and coatings. Importance will also be given to the combinations of whey proteins with other polymers and the development of new techniques that allow the manipulation of structures at a molecular level. The controlled release and mass transfer of new biomaterials and the improvement of the design of films and packaging materials with the desired functional properties can increase the quality of the films and, consequently, broaden their applications. Introduction: Melanoma, a highly aggressive skin cancer originating in melanocytes, poses a significant threat due to its metastatic potential. While progress has been made in treating melanoma with targeted therapies and immunotherapies, challenges persist. Crotoxin (CTX), the principal toxin in Crotalus durissus terrificus snake venom, exhibits various biological activities, including anti-tumoral effects across multiple cancers. However, its clinical use is limited by toxicity. Thus, exploring alternatives to mitigate adverse effects is crucial. Methods and Results: This study investigates the antitumoral potential of CTX in its native and in a detoxified form, in melanoma cells. Firstly, we demonstrated that detoxified CTX presented reduced phospholipase activity. Both forms proved to be more cytotoxic to SK-MEL-28 and MeWo melanoma cells than nontumoral cells. In SK-MEL-28 cells, where cytotoxic effects were more pronounced, native and detoxified CTX induced increased necrosis and apoptosis rates. We also confirmed the apoptosis death demonstrated by the activation of caspase-3 and 7, and the formation of apoptotic bodies. Furthermore, both CTX caused cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase, interfering with melanoma cell proliferation. Cell migration and invasion were also suppressed by both CTX. These results confirm the antitumoral potential of CTX. Discussion: The maintenance of the antiproliferative effects in the detoxified version, with reduced enzymatic activity often liked to harm effects, supports further studies to identify active parts of the molecule responsible for the interesting effects without causing substantial toxic events, contributing to the future use of CTX-derived drugs with safety and efficacy. Lupine is a legume commonly used in human diet as a functional food due to its high nutritional content and important technological properties. However, its consumption can lead to the manifestation of adverse immunological reactions, posing significant health issues in sensitized/allergic patients. This work aims to investigate the effect of food processing combined with simulated gastrointestinal (GI) digestion on the immunoreactivity of lupine γ-conglutin. Model foods of wheat pasta containing 35% of lupine flour (Lupinus albus, L. luteus, and L. angustifolius) were prepared and submitted to a boiling process. The proteins were extracted and their profiles characterized by SDS-PAGE. Simulated GI digestion was performed on thermally treated pasta using the INFOGEST harmonized digestion protocol 2.0. The IgG binding capacity of γ-conglutin was assessed by immunoblotting in non-reducing conditions and indirect ELISA with specific antibodies. Results demonstrate that the boiling treatment affected the immunoreactivity of the three lupine species differently. Simulated GI digestion led to extensive destruction of the protein structure, more significant in the intestinal phase, reducing but not abolishing the IgG affinity to γ-conglutin and its potential presentation to immunocompetent cells. Proliferative enteropathy is an enteric disease caused by the bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis, which affects several species of domestic and wild animals. The mechanisms underlying the mechanisms employed by L. intracellularis to cause host cell proliferation are poorly understood, mostly because this bacterium is extremely difficult to isolate and propagate in vitro. Comparative genomics methods for searching for genes orthologous to genes known to be associated with pathogenesis allow identification of genes potentially involved in pathogenesis by the pathogen of interest. The goal of this study was to carry out in silico research on L. intracellularis genes orthologous to genes required for intracellular invasion and survival present in other pathogenic bacteria, particularly Brucella abortus, B. melitensis, B. suis, Listeria monocytogenes, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, Salmonella enterica, Yersinia pestis, Y. enterocolitica, and Y. pseudotuberculosis. A total of 127 genes associated with invasion and intracellular survival from five known intracellular bacteria were mapped against the predicted proteomes of all L. intracellularis strains publicly available on GenBank, using the OrthoFinder program. A total of 45 L. intracellularis genes were orthologous to genes associated with pathogenesis of other intracellular bacteria. Genes putatively associated with signal the transduction of chemotaxis and cell motility were identified. Genes related to DNA binding and repair were also identified, with some of them supporting a possible association of bacteria with macrophages or inducing pro-inflammatory responses. The homology-based identification of these genes suggests their potential involvement in the virulence and pathogenicity of L. intracellularis, opening avenues for future research and insights into the molecular mechanisms of Lawsonia-elicited proliferative enteropathy. This study evaluated the responses of Carapichea ipecacuanha to sunlight stress-induced changes in the electron transport chain and its extended effects on alkaloid production (emetine and cephalin). The treatments consisted of: (i). 50, 70, and 90% shading (controls) and their respective exposure to full sunlight; besides, full sunlight (55 days of direct sun exposure). Photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll a fluorescence transient, antioxidant enzymatic system, and quantification of cephalin and emetine were analyzed. Several changes in the Chl a fluorescence induction were observed, such as a decline in the quantum yield of the conversion of photochemical energy and photosynthetic performance and; an increase in emetine production of plants exposed to full sunlight. These results demonstrated that ipecac plants are extremely sensitive to full exposure to solar radiation, especially in periods with high temperatures, such as in summer, however with increment in emetine production. Examining the impact of pharmaceutical services on the clinical management of oncological pain in hospital settings. An integrative review was conducted using the MEDLINE (PubMed) database and grey literature. Thirty-seven studies were retrieved, and after applying eligibility criteria, seven studies were selected. There is a clear trend of benefits from pharmaceutical clinical services in enhancing clinical management of oncological pain in hospitalized patients, as well as revealing financial benefits to hospital institutions. Effective implementation faces challenges, including resistance to opioid use and conservative patterns of medical prescription, affecting the acceptance and efficacy of pharmaceutical interventions. Fabry disease is an invalidating multisystemic disorder affecting α-Galactosidase, a rate-limiting hydrolase dedicated to lipid catabolism. Non-metabolized substrates, such as Globotriaosylceramide and its derivatives trigger the direct or indirect activation of inflammatory events and endothelial dysfunction. In spite of the efficacy demonstrated by enzyme replacement therapy or pharmacological chaperones in delaying disease progression, few studies have analyzed whether these treatments can improve the pro-inflammatory state of FD patients. Therefore, the aim of this work was to assess cytokines and cardiovascular risk-related proteins detectable in plasma from FD patients, whether treated or not with ERT, to evaluate the reliability of these markers in monitoring disease stage and treatment effects. We identified inflammatory and endothelial dysfunction markers (ADAMTS-13, TNF-α, GDF-15, MIP-1β, VEGFA, MPO, and MIC-1) that cooperate in a common pathway and are increased in FD patients' plasma samples. As shown by the assessment of these proteins over time, they can help to evaluate the risk of higher severity in FD, as well as ERT effects. Even though the analyzed proteins cannot be considered as proper biomarkers due to their non-specificity to FD, taken together they can provide a signature of reference molecules with prognostic value for early diagnosis, and evaluation of disease progression and treatment efficacy, using blood samples. Assai (Euterpe oleracea Martius) is a superfruit widely consumed in several countries, mainly produced in the Amazon region. The significant growth of the market for this fruit has raised environmental concerns regarding the disposal of production waste, especially the seeds that are not utilized and represent approximately 80% of the fruit. In the present study, strategies were developed for transforming these seed wastes into new products, using green solvents for extraction under conditions conducive to technology transfer and with feasible quality control through simple bench techniques, which represents an ideal approach for establishing a truly sustainable process. A significant interaction between solvent and extraction method was observed, impacting both yields and total phenols. Phenolic compounds are substances known for their health benefits, functioning as antioxidants and consequently aiding in disease prevention. The phenolic content observed in the extractions increased from 22.68% to 44.74% under optimal conditions during extraction via hot maceration (50 °C) in 100% ethanol for 2 h, which also enhanced yield and increased antioxidant capacity. The extracts displayed remarkable free radical scavenging activities (IC50 = 6.54 μg/mL in ABTS and IC50 = 14.71 μg/mL in DPPH), approaching the Trolox and quercetin standards, respectively.
