Abstract

The reduction of sugar and the addition of healthier ingredients in gummy jellies brings some improved health characteristics to a product that usually is devoid of nutrition. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop gummy jellies using natural ingredients, without added sugars or additives, in two varieties: one including orange juice and slightly sweetened with honey (ORH) and the other including puree made from a mixture of berries (BEM). These were submitted to physicochemical, microbiological, and sensorial analyses. Results of microbiological analyses showed that both gummies were suitable for consumption accordingly to EU legislation. The physicochemical analyses allowed making a nutritional evaluation, so that ORH and BEM presented 73.8 kcal/100 g and 39.8 kcal/100 g, respectively, five and nine times lower than similar commercial products. The contribution of macronutrients of ORH and BEM was as follows: 78.0 and 67% from carbohydrates, 21.7 and 33% from proteins, respectively. Regarding the potential functional properties, the antioxidant capacity was 50.4 ± 4.5 mg/L TE for ORH and 83.7 ± 7.6 mg/L for BEM. Sensorial evaluation showed that although the developed gummy jellies were slightly less appreciated than a commercial counterpart, still they were appreciated by members of a panel and particularly the ORH, which was rated with scores almost equal to those of the commercial sample. In addition, the developed gummies showed lower caloric values and higher antioxidant capacity than similar commercial candies. Overall, ORH and BEM gummy jellies could represent an opportunity to provide consumers with a healthier alternative to the common jelly candies available in the market.

219. Bounded Control for Double Integrator in Quadrotor Dynamics

Abstract

We construct a trajectory tracking controller for a quadrotor system by finding a coordinate change which transforms the quadrotor's vector field into that of a thrust propelled system. In a thrust propelled system, the goal is to stabilize its position around the origin, while the system is actuated by a one dimensional acceleration/thrust along a direction vector, by a time-varying gravity, and by the angular acceleration of the direction vector. For this system, a solution has been proposed in a companion article, submitted to ECC 2016, based on the implicit knowledge of a bounded controller for a double integrator system, and on the implicit knowledge of a Lyapunov function that guarantees the origin is asymptotically stable for the double integrator controlled by the bounded controller. 220. A Common Framework for Attitude Synchronization of Unit Vectors in Networks with Switching Topology

Abstract

In this paper, we study attitude synchronization for elements in the unit sphere of R3 and for elements in the 3D rotation group, for a network with switching topology. The agents angular velocities are assumed to be the control inputs, and a switching control law for each agent is devised that guarantees synchronization, provided that all elements are initially contained in a given region, unknown to the network. The control law is decentralized and it does not require a common orientation frame among all agents. We refer to synchronization of unit vectors in R3 as incomplete synchronization, and of 3D rotation matrices as complete synchronization. Our main contribution lies on showing that these two problems can be analyzed under a common framework, where all elements' dynamics are transformed into unit vectors dynamics on a sphere of appropriate dimension., Comment: Companion manuscript on CDC 2016

221. Family of Controllers for Attitude Synchronization on the Sphere

Abstract

In this paper we study a family of controllers that guarantees attitude synchronization for a network of elements in the unit sphere domain, i.e. $\mathcal{S}^2$. We propose distributed continuous controllers for elements whose dynamics are controllable (i.e. control with torque as command), and which can be implemented by each individual agent without the need of a common global orientation frame among the network, i.e. it requires only local information that can be measured by each individual agent from its own orientation frame. The controllers are specified according to arbitrary distance functions in $\mathcal{S}^2$, and we provide conditions on those distance functions that guarantee that i) a synchronized network of agents is locally asymptotically stable for an arbitrary network graph; ii) a synchronized network can be achieved for almost all initial conditions in a tree graph network. We also study the equilibria configurations that come with specific types of network graphs. 222. 'I Wish to Do an Internship (Abroad)': Investigating the Perceived Employability of Domestic and International Business Internships

Abstract

This study examines the perceived employability of facultative domestic and international business internships, using an experimental between-subject factorial design. A sample of 194 Portuguese business employees rated the employability of six fictitious résumés of business graduates varying in gender and participation in a facultative internship. The résumés were target to an entry-level marketing position and were rated on a set of employability outcomes, such as job suitability, employability skills and starting salary. The results showed that the non-participation condition resulted in the worst rates of job suitability and employability skills, while the outcomes of the international and the domestic conditions were not significantly different from each other. Male interns were the most well ranked in job suitability and starting salary, while female non-interns were the worst ranked. This study provides evidence that an internship experience, even if facultative, is an information 'good to add' in the résumé but does not support the prediction that 'the more international the better'. This evidence suggests that graduates' employability depends not only on the academic credentials and skills they can bring to the labour market as on the expectations about their unique contribution. This study is one of the first to empirically examine the perceived employability of facultative business internships, exploring the relevance and value of domestic and international experiences.

228. Longitudinal Trajectories of Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate in a European Population of Living Kidney Donors.

Abstract

A living donor (LD) kidney transplant is the best treatment for kidney failure, but LDs safety is paramount. We sought to evaluate our LDs cohort's longitudinal changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). We retrospectively studied 320 LDs submitted to nephrectomy between 1998 and 2020. The primary outcome was the eGFR change until 15 years (y) post-donation. Subgroup analysis considered distinct donor characteristics and kidney function reduction rate (%KFRR) post-donation [-(eGFR6 months(M)-eGFRpre-donation)/eGFRpre-donation*100]. Donors had amean age of 47.3 ± 10.5 years, 71% female. Overall, LDs presented an average eGFR change 6 M onward of +0.35 mL/min/1.73 m²/year. The period with the highest increase was 6 M-2 Y, with a mean eGFR change of +0.85L/min/1.73 m²/year. Recovery plateaued at 10 years. Normal weight donors presented significantly better recovery of eGFR +0.59 mL/min/1.73 m²/year, compared to obese donors -0.18L/min/ 1.73 m²/year (p = 0.020). Noteworthy, these results only hold for the first 5 years. The subgroup with a lower KFRR (<26.2%) had a significantly higher decrease in eGFR overall of -0.21 mL/min/1.73 m²/year compared to the groups with higher KFRR (p < 0.001). These differences only hold for 6 M-2 Y. Moreover, an eGFR<50 mL/min/1.73 m² was a rare event, with ≤5%prevalence in the 2-15 Y span, correlating with eGFR pre-donation. Our data show that eGFR recovery is significant and may last until 10 years post-donation. However, some subgroups presented more ominous kidney function trajectories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

229. The Effects of Activated Carbon Toothpastes on Orthodontic Elastomeric Chains—An In Vitro Study.

Abstract

Objectives: Using toothpaste with activated carbon might increase the decay of orthodontic elastomeric chains' (ECs) tensile strength, thereby compromising orthodontic treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of activated charcoal toothpaste on orthodontic ECs. Materials and Methods: A total sample of 180 EC segments from 3M Unitek®, Ormco® and Ortho Classic® brands were equally divided into 12 groups, each comprising 15 specimens. These pieces were kept in artificial saliva at 37 °C and brushed twice daily for 28 days, with three distinct types of toothpaste: Colgate® Total, Colgate® Max White, and Dr Organic® Extra Whitening Charcoal Toothpaste. The latter two toothpastes contain activated charcoal. Tensile strength, resistance to rupture and colour variation were evaluated at time zero and day 28. Descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests were performed at p ≤ 0.05. Results: Toothpaste with and without activated carbon significantly reduced the tensile strength and resistance to rupture of the ECs, and altered EC colour (p < 0.0001). There was inconsistency in the effect of the activated carbon on EC characteristics, most probably due to the different compositions of the ECs and percentages of whitening agents in the toothpastes. Conclusions: The material composition of ECs contributes to their tensile strength decay, resistance to rupture and colour change over time. The variable percentage of activated carbon in a toothpaste likely underlies the different effects observed, depending on the EC brand. Clinical Relevance: It might be reasonable to advise patients wearing ECs to avoid using toothpaste with activated carbon until further evidence becomes available. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Kisspeptin, a key neuropeptide derived from the KISS1R gene, is renowned for its critical role in regulating the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis and reproductive hormone secretion. Beyond its primary function in reproductive biology, emerging research has illuminated its influence in various cancers, mediating significant effects through its interaction with the G protein-coupled receptor, kisspeptin receptor. This interaction has been implicated in modulating cellular processes such as proliferation and metastasis, making it a potential target for therapeutic intervention. Our study initially screened ten kisspeptin-10 analogs through cytotoxic effects of kisspeptin-10 (KP10) and its analogs in several cancer types, including cervical, prostate, breast, and gastric cancers, with a particular focus on cervical cancer, where the most profound effects were observed. Further exploration using kinase array assays revealed that these analogs specifically alter key kinases involved in cancer progression. Migration assays demonstrated a substantial decrease in cell motility, and Bioluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer assays confirmed these analogs' strong interactions with the kisspeptin receptor. Overall, our results indicate that these KP10 analogs not only hinder cervical cancer cell proliferation but also curtail migration through targeted modulation of kinase signaling, suggesting their potential as therapeutic agents in managing cervical cancer progression. Abstract

Energy performance-based contracts (EPCs) offer a promising solution for enhancing the energy performance of buildings, which is an overarching step towards achieving Net Zero Carbon Buildings, addressing climate change and improving occupants' comfort. Despite their potential, their execution is constrained by difficulties that hinder their diffusion in the architecture, engineering, construction, and operation industry. Notably, the Measurement and Verification process is considered a significant impediment due to data sharing, storage, and security challenges. Nevertheless, there have been minimal efforts to analyze research conducted in this field systematically. A systematic analysis of 113 identified journal articles was conducted to fill this gap. A paucity of research tackling the utilization of digital technologies to enhance the implementation of EPCs was found. Consequently, this article proposes a framework integrating Digital Twin and Blockchain technologies to provide an enhanced EPC execution environment. Digital Twin technology leverages the system by monitoring and evaluating energy performance in real-time, predicting future performance, and facilitating informed decisions. Blockchain technology ensures the integrity, transparency, and accountability of information. Moreover, a private Blockchain infrastructure was originally introduced in the framework to eliminate high transaction costs related to on-chain storage and potential concerns regarding the confidentiality of information in open distributed ledgers. 235. Portfolio resampling in the Brazilian stock market: Can it outperform Markowitz optimization?

Abstract

Markowitz optimization plays a crucial role in modern portfolio theory. However, it is well known that Markowitz optimization is highly affected by estimation errors in the mean vector and covariance matrix, resulting in extreme and/or unrealistic portfolio weights, lack of diversification, and poor out-of-sample performance. In response to these challenges, Michaud and Michaud (1998) proposed a heuristic portfolio resampling approach aimed to deliver more diversified and better out-of-sample portfolio performance. This approach has received both criticism and praise among academics and practitioners, with the main critique being the unclear economic benefits of applying this method to empirical data. To contribute to this ongoing debate, our study assess the performance of the Michaud and Michaud (1998) portfolio resampling approach using data from the Brazilian stock market. Additionally, we evaluate whether a resampling approach based on factor structure can yield superior out-of-sample performance.
