This Panel was set up by the Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee (FESAC) at its November 2000 meeting for the purpose of addressing questions from the Department of Energy concerning the theory and computing/simulation program of the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences. Although the Panel primarily addressed programmatic questions, it acknowledges that the theory and computing in fusion energy sciences has a stellar record of research successes. (A recent FESAC report entitled “Opportunities in the Fusion Energy Sciences Program” listed a number of theory and computing research highlights.) Last year the National Research Council performed an assessment of the quality of the fusion energy sciences program—including theory and computing—and concluded that the quality of its research is on a par with that of other leading areas of contemporary physical science. Continental shelves host 90% of modern Organic Carbon (OC) burial and play a key role in the sequestration of terrigenous OC over geological timescales. The efficiency of OC burial in these systems, however, varies greatly depending on the duration of exposure to oxic-suboxic conditions during sediment transport. In this study, we use observations across a wide range of stratigraphic and sedimentological scales coupled with geochemistry data from muddy shelf deposits along the western Adriatic to investigate the relation between sediment transport and burial of terrigenous (land-derived) fraction of OC (OC Terr). Our analysis focused on the Little Ice Age (LIA, 1500–1850 CE) interval, which was characterized by wet, cold, and stormy weather conditions, before the time of widespread regulation and damming of rivers. On the Adriatic shelf, LIA deposits are organized as clinothem: strata that dip gently seawards. The LIA clinothem becomes progressively steeper and deeper from north to south. Basin-scale seismic-stratigraphic analysis and biogeochemical data show evidence of elongated stratal units associated with low OC Terr content in the northern sector of the LIA clinothem, whereas farther south, where clinoforms are steeper, the LIA clinothem exhibits wavy stratal units with limited cross-shelf continuity and high OC Terr concentrations. Based on these data we infer two contrasting scenarios for OC Terr deposition during the LIA: 1) protracted sediment redistribution under the influence of coastal currents with efficient OC Terr degradation prior to final burial in the northern sector; and (2) rapid deposition of OC Terr -rich event beds as a result of flood-driven hyperpycnal flows with limited dispersion across the shelf in the southern sector. The latter scenario of deposition resulted in scattered hot spots of OC Terr burial along the apparently homogeneous western Adriatic shelf deposit. Our work documents significant lateral variability of a fine-grained system in which hot spots of OC Terr can be preserved in scattered prodelta bedsets (<1 km in across-shelf lateral continuity) over a 600 km long shelf. Shelfal clinothems worldwide should not be considered as homogeneous pools of OC Terr because of the influence of river, storm, and oceanic currents. • Novel approach highlights stratal geometries as a diagnostic tool to predict fate and burial of OC Terr. • Shelfal delta-scale clinothems worldwide are not homogeneous pools of OC Terr because of river, storm, and current influence. • Depositional processes govern the sediment transport time and, in turn, OC Terr degradation and burial. • Isolated hot spots of elevated OC Terr resulted from river flood events with magnitudes of present-day 100-year floods. • OC Terr content can be overestimated in C-budget models that do not consider lateral stratigraphic heterogeneity. The article elaborates on the study conducted by scientists on the significance of free-electron lasers (FEL) to the scientific community in the U.S. It has been a dream of scientists to have a video camera where they can record individual atoms and their motions, or even to follow electrons during physical, chemical and biological process. To make such aim possible, radiation of extremely small wavelengths are needed to resolve atomic and sub-atomic details, thus their attention focused on the use of high-energy electrons to produce coherent beams of X-rays. During their experiment, they discovered that FEL could produced X-rays intense enough to make atomic-resolution movies.

Hydrocarbon seepage is overlooked in the marine environment, mostly due to the lack of high-resolution exploration data. This contribution is about the set-up of a relocatable and cost-effective monitoring system, which was tested on two seepages in the Central Adriatic Sea. The two case studies are an oil spill at a water depth of 10 m and scattered biogenic methane seeps at a water depth of 84 m. Gas plumes in the water column were detected with a multibeam system, tightened to sub-seafloor seismic reflection data. Dissolved benthic fluxes of nutrients, metals and Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) were measured by in situ deployment of a benthic chamber, which was used also for the first time to collect water samples for hydrocarbons characterization. In addition, the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as major and trace elements were analyzed to provide an estimate of hydrocarbon contamination in the surrounding sediment and to make further inferences on the petroleum system. Holocene inner shelf mud wedges are important paleoenvironmental archives because they typically contain continuous and extensive sedimentary sequences that can document past changes in sedimentary processes at very high temporal resolution. Here we investigate the fine-scale, seismic patterns of the Late Holocene Adriatic Mud Wedge (AMW), along the western Adriatic margin, to understand the processes of river-sea interactions and their effects on sediments distribution. While analyzing high-resolution seismic reflection profiles, we documented variations in the architectural stratal stacking patterns of the AMW, largely related to short-term fluctuations in sediment supply during the last sea level high (ca. 6000 years BP). Analysis of high-resolution seismic profiles revealed that the AMW consists of five clinothems (referred to here as "seismic units" SU1 to SU5) that were roughly dated by calibration with the continuous recovery well PRAD2-4. Each seismic unit is bounded by minor floodplains (H1 to H5), reflecting periods of relative sediment starvation at the margin. Our analysis provides an interpretative tool to differentiate the fluvial contribution of marine remodeling processes during the AMW evolution on millennium to centennial timescales. In addition, small-scale geomorphic features such as erosion surfaces, small distributary channels and terminal lobes were identified to provide information on heterogeneities that may impact an unconventional fine-grained delta reservoir, both in terms of continuity and overall hydrocarbon potential. • We document the Late Holocene evolution of the AMW between Conero Promontory and Gargano Promontory. • The first internal subdivision of the AMW at the intra-clinothem scale for almost its entire extent is presented and analyzed. • Evidence of short-lived phases of advancing and retreat of the AMW at the intra-clinothem scale have been observed. • The competition between sediments from rivers and the redistribution by oceanographic processes sees a progressive increase of the latter over time. • New evidence has enlightened the presence of small-scale, shallow water distributary channels across the AMW. High-resolution bathymetry provides critical information to marine geoscientists. Bathymetric big data help characterise the seafloor and its benthic habitats, understand sedimentary records, and support the development of offshore engineering infrastructures. From September 27th to October 20th, 2022, the new CNR Research Vessel GAIA BLU explored the seafloor of the Naples and Pozzuoli Gulfs, and the Amalfi coastal area (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) from 50 to more than 2000 m water depth, acquiring about 5000 km2 of multi beam echosounder data. This area is particularly vulnerable to abrupt changes driven by the dynamics of several volcanic complexes, active in the area, and by human-induced impacts reflecting the proximity to the highly populated and touristic coastal area of Naples and nearby famous islands. For these reasons, the seafloor of the area needs to be known and constantly monitored. The digital bathymetric data previously available are restricted to the shallow highly dynamic area of the Gulf of Naples and appear fragmented as they were acquired in successive years, with different goals thereby using a variety of devices, with markedly different spatial resolutions. In this paper, we present bathymetric maps of the Gulf of Naples and adjacent slope basins at unprecedented resolution using three state-of-the-art multi beam echosounders. These high-resolution data highlight the technological advances of geophysical surveys achieved over the last 20 years and contribute to assessing the most dynamic areas where changes in the seafloor over time can be quantified. The new digital multi-resolution bathymetric products are openly accessible via Marine Geosciences Data System MGDS (refer to section Data Availability, Table 8, for datasets and products DOIs), perfectly matching the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) and Open Science Principles. The combined use of the meiofauna (benthic foraminifers and ostracods) and geochemical data from three cores, recovered in distinct bathymetric sectors of the southern Adriatic shelf (Apulia, SE Italy), provides new insights on the relationships between shallow-marine environments, sediment fluxes and eutrophication trends over the last ∼7000 years. The stratigraphic distribution of meiofauna assemblages allows distinguishing a variety of facies associations, accumulated at proximal (Manfredonia Gulf), intermediate and distal shelf sectors. Spatial-temporal facies trajectories mainly reflect changes in fluxes of fine-grained, inorganic and organic particles at the seafloor. Major palaeoenvironmental shifts are paralleled by stratigraphic variations of Cr-Ni values, which represent effective provenance tracers for the Adriatic region. The correlation between the meiofauna content and trace-metal concentrations documents the link between the type of substrate (organic matter-OM and grain-size) and sediment provenance along the bathymetric profile and through time. After 6000 yr B.P., the gulf, partly sheltered by the Gargano Promontory, experienced the first increase in OM fluxes (transition from open-bay to prodelta). This turnaround occurred under the progressive change in sediment supply from southern Apennine source-rocks, poor in trace metals, to a mixed contribution including northern sources, enriched in chromium and nickel (mafic/ultramafic rocks of the Po River catchment) via the SSE-directed longshore drift. Alongside, prodelta clays in lateral transition to mud-belt deposits accumulated in the adjacent open shelf under the steady influence of the longshore drift. Finally, since ∼2000 yr B.P. a pervasive subaqueous delta system developed across the study area in response to increased sediment load by Po + Apennine rivers, likely induced by enhanced anthropic pressure during Roman times. This study highlights the key role played by the sediment routing system, coastal morphology and human land-use on shelf facies patterns and eutrophication trends, even in areas hundreds of km away from the main fluvial mouths. • Shallow-marine facies, meiofauna and sediment provenance are closely related. • Beyond water depth, meiofauna reflect organic content and grain-size sea bottom. • Longshore drift coupled with coastal morphology drives shelf facies patterns. • Human land-use can fuel environmental changes on shelves far from major deltas. Preserving adaptive capacities of coastal ecosystems, which are currently facing the ongoing climate warming and a multitude of other anthropogenic impacts, requires an understanding of long‐term biotic dynamics in the context of major environmental shifts prior to human disturbances. We quantified responses of nearshore mollusk assemblages to long‐term climate and sea‐level changes using 223 samples (~71,300 specimens) retrieved from latest Quaternary sediment cores of the Adriatic coastal systems. These cores provide a rare chance to study coastal systems that existed during glacial lowstands. The fossil mollusk record indicates that nearshore assemblages of the penultimate interglacial (Late Pleistocene) shifted in their faunal composition during the subsequent ice age, and then reassembled again with the return of interglacial climate in the Holocene. These shifts point to a climate‐driven habitat filtering modulated by dispersal processes. The resilient, rather than persistent or stochastic, response of the mollusk assemblages to long‐term environmental changes over at least 125 thousand years highlights the historically unprecedented nature of the ongoing anthropogenic stressors (e.g., pollution, eutrophication, bottom trawling, and invasive species) that are currently shifting coastal regions into novel system states far outside the range of natural variability archived in the fossil record. Coherent nonlinear spectroscopies and imaging in the X-ray domain provide direct insight into the coupled motions of electrons and nuclei with resolution on the electronic length scale and timescale. The experimental realization of such techniques will strongly benefit from access to intense, coherent pairs of femtosecond X-ray pulses. We have observed phase-stable X-ray pulse pairs containing more than 3 × 107 photons at 5.9 keV (2.1 Å) with ∼1 fs duration and 2 to 5 fs separation. The highly directional pulse pairs are manifested by interference fringes in the superfluorescent and seeded stimulated manganese Kα emission induced by an X-ray free-electron laser. The fringes constitute the time-frequency X-ray analog of Young’s double-slit interference, allowing for frequency domain X-ray measurements with attosecond time resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

X-ray Free Electron Lasers provide femtosecond x-ray pulses with narrow bandwidth and unprecedented peak brightness. Special modes of operation have been developed to deliver double pulses for x-ray pump, x-ray probe experiments. However, the longest delay between the two pulses achieved with existing single bucket methods is less than 1 picosecond, thus preventing the exploration of longer time-scale dynamics. We present a novel two-bucket scheme covering delays from 350 picoseconds to hundreds of nanoseconds in discrete steps of 350 picoseconds. Performance for each pulse can be similar to the one in a single pulse operation. The method has been experimentally tested with the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS-I) and the copper linac with LCLS-II hard x-ray undulators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Depositional systems accumulating under the combined influence of along-slope currents and downslope sediment-gravity flows are frequent in several continental margins. Despite being well-documented in terms of how these opposing depositional processes shape the margin architecture, many aspects related to their interaction and distinctive characters of resulting sediment accumulations remain elusive. Here we focus on the Gela Basin, the foredeep of the Maghrebian fold-and-thrust belt in the Strait of Sicily, where the Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) and the Modified Atlantic Water (MAW) are confined by margin morphology, which amplify their velocities. Two sediment cores located on the upper and lower slope of the Gela Basin document the overlapping of along- and downslope processes since the very last phase of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Detailed analysis of several proxies including sedimentary structures, sortable silt, geochemical elemental composition, oxygen and carbon isotopes, ichnofacies and foraminifera assemblages helped to disentangle the sedimentary imprints of contourites (including variations in bottom-current velocity through time) and downslope gravity-driven processes (turbidity currents and mass-transport processes). The slope experienced exceptionally high sedimentation rates up to 1300 cm kyr−1 during the last phase of LGM and early phase of Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1), which rapidly decreased before Heinrich Event 1 (< 100 cm kyr−1). The high accumulation rates were driven by a combination of sediment input from the inner and mid shelf and lateral advection promoted by strong bottom-currents under the action of the LIW. An abrupt and brief intensification (+ 7.8 cm−1) of the MAW speed during the early phase of HS1 affected the stability of the sediment drifts, which were growing since the previous interglacial and contributed to the emplacement of mass-transport deposits around 17 kyr BP. During the post-glacial sea-level rise pulses, before and during the Heinrich Event 1, the two sediment cores registered contrasting bottom-current velocities, suggesting a progressive shoaling of the LIW and modifications at the interface between the LIW and the MAW, in response to the increased fresh water discharge from the Atlantic. Our findings suggest that sea-level fluctuations can change the thickness and core-depth of the Central Mediterranean water masses, leading to intervals of enhanced bottom-current erosion and margin instability along the outer shelf and upper slope. • High sedimentation rates with an expanded record of the Heinrich Stadial 1 revealed. • Down- versus along-slope processes disentangled using a multi-proxy approach. • Reconstruction of the bottom-current velocity since the Last Glacial Maximum. • Sea-level rise pulses induce changes in core depth of bottom-current transport. • Margin instability is related to erosion by bottom-current over the shelf and rapid sea-level rise. This study presents novel findings on the Pliocene and Quaternary evolution of the Gela Basin (Strait of Sicily, Mediterranean Sea), an area recording the interaction between tectonics, climate change at Milankovitch and sub-Milankovitch timescales, and dynamic water masses exchange between the eastern and western Mediterranean Sea. The calibration of seismic profiles with exploration boreholes allowed for the refining of the chronostratigraphic framework of the Gela Basin and highlighted the main phases of margin growth. Since the Pliocene, the margin has recorded the deposition of 100 m high shelf-edge clinothems, accompanied by sediment drifts on the slope and mass-transport deposits (MTDs), possibly triggered by seismic activity. Through the Plio-Quaternary the locus of deposition of sediment drifts migrated upslope due to a progressive shift of bottom currents. After the Middle Pleistocene Transition (MPT) the margin experienced an accelerated outbuilding with the deposition of a 700 m thick succession in only 0.8 Myr. At this time, a marked change in sedimentary architecture reflects the growth of shelf-edge clinothems and associated MTDs on the slope, and the spreading of contourite deposits over a broader and generally shallower area. Sediment flux to the basin and the intensity of bottom currents appear both paced at 100 kyr eccentricity orbital cycles. The growth of bottom current deposits on a large portion of the upper slope and outer shelf likely reflects constraints to the bottom current flow by the margin morphology, inherited from Miocene and Pliocene tectonics. Overall, a combination of long-term tectonic activity, climate change and shifts in oceanographic regime resulted in a complex along-strike variability of the margin morphology and stratigraphic architecture and affected where and when MTDs were emplaced. Oscillators are at the heart of optical lasers, providing stable, transform-limited pulses. Until now, laser oscillators have been available only in the infrared to visible and near-ultraviolet (UV) spectral region. In this paper, we present a study of an oscillator operating in the 5- to 12-keV photon-energy range. We show that, using the Kα1 line of transition metal compounds as the gain medium, an X-ray free-electron laser as a periodic pump, and a Bragg crystal optical cavity, it is possible to build X-ray oscillators producing intense, fully coherent, transform-limited pulses. As an example, we consider the case of a copper nitrate gain medium generating ∼ 5 × 1010 photons per pulse with 37-fs pulse length and 48-meV spectral resolution at 8-keV photon energy. Our theoretical study and simulation of this system show that, because of the very large gain per pass, the oscillator saturates and reaches full coherence in four to six optical-cavity transits. We discuss the feasibility and design of the X-ray optical cavity and other parts of the oscillator needed for its realization, opening the way to extend X-ray–based research beyond current capabilities. Reconstructions of ancient delta systems rely typically on a two‐dimensional (2D) view of prograding clinothems but may miss their three‐dimensional (3D) stratigraphic complexity which can, instead, be best documented on modern delta systems by integrating high‐resolution geophysical data, historical cartography, core data and geomorphological reconstructions offshore. We quantitatively compare three precisely positioned, high‐resolution multi‐beam bathymetry maps in the delta front and pro delta sectors (0.3 to 10 m water depth) of Po di Pila, the most active of the modern Po Delta five branches. By investigating the detailed morphology of the prograding modern Po Delta, we shed new light on the mechanisms that control the topset to foreset transition in clinothems and show the temporal and spatial complexity of a delta and its pro delta slope, under the impact of oceanographic processes. This study documents the ephemeral nature of the rollover point at the transition between sandy topset (fluvial, delta plain to mouth‐bar) and muddy seaward‐dipping foreset deposits advancing, in this case, in >20 m of water depth. Three multibeam surveys, acquired between 2013 and 2016, document the complexity in space and time of the topset and foreset regions and their related morphology, a diagnostic feature that could not be appreciated using solely 2D, even very high‐resolution, seismic profiles. In addition, the comparison of bathymetric surveys gathered with one‐year lapses shows the migration of subaqueous sand dunes on the clinothem topset, the formation of ephemeral cut‐and‐fill features at the rollover point (few m below mean sea level), the presence of collapse depressions derived by sagging of sediments and fluid expulsion (possibly induced by storm waves) on the foreset, and splays of sand likely reflecting gravity flows on the lower foreset. Though the modern Po Delta is anthropogenic in many respects, its subaqueous clinothem can be studied as a scale model for ancient clinothems that are less resolved geometrically and far less constrained chronologically. Clinoforms are basinward‐dipping and accreting palaeo‐bathymetric profiles that record palaeo‐environmental conditions and processes; thus, clinothems represent natural palaeo‐archives. Here, we document shelf‐edge scale clinoform sets which prograded through the entire width of an epicontinental marine basin (ca. 400 km), eventually encroaching onto the opposite basin flank, where they started to prograde upslope and landward, in defiance of gravity ("upslope‐climbing clinoforms"). The giant westward‐prograding Eridanos muddy shelf‐edge clinothem originated from the Baltic hinterland in the Oligocene and achieved maximum regression in the Early Pleistocene, on the UK Central Graben (CG) and Mid North Sea High (MNSH), after crossing the whole North Sea mesopelagic depocentre and causing near complete basin infill. Here we integrate well and seismic data through the MNSH and CG and examine the Eridanos final heyday and demise, identifying five clinothem complexes (A1, A2, A3, B and C) and six depositional sequence boundaries (SB1 to SB6) in the Miocene‐Recent section. Tectonic and climatic events drove the recent evolution of this system. Early Pleistocene climate cooling, in particular, resulted in a stepwise increase in sediment supply. This climaxed in the earliest Calabrian, following a likely Eburonian eustatic fall (=SB3) when the Eridanos clastic wedge was restructured from a 100–300 m thick compound shelf‐edge and delta system to a "hybrid" shelf‐edge delta at sequence boundary SB3 (ca. 1.75 Ma). In the ca. 40 kyr that followed SB3, a progradation rate peak (>1,000 m/kyr) is associated with clinoforms starting to accrete upslope, onto the east‐dipping slope between CG and MNSH. This "upslope‐climbing clinoform" phase was quickly followed by the maximum regression and final retreat of the Eridanos system in the Early Calabrian (=SB4), likely as the result of climate‐driven changes in the Baltic hinterland and/or delta auto‐retreat. To our knowledge, this contributions represents the first documentation of "upslope‐climbing clinoforms" recorded in the stratigraphic record. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The feasibility of generating X‐ray pulses in the 4–8 keV fundamental photon energy range with 0.65 TW peak power, 15 fs pulse duration and 9 × 10−5 bandwidth using the LCLS‐II copper linac and hard X‐ray (HXR) undulator is shown. In addition, third‐harmonic pulses with 8–12 GW peak power and narrow bandwidth are also generated. High‐power and small‐bandwidth X‐rays are obtained using two electron bunches separated by about 1 ns, one to generate a high‐power seed signal, the other to amplify it through the process of the HXR undulator tapering. The bunch delay is compensated by delaying the seed pulse with a four‐crystal monochromator. The high‐power seed leads to higher output power and better spectral properties, with more than 94% of the X‐ray power within the near‐transform‐limited bandwidth. Some of the experiments made possible by X‐ray pulses with these characteristics are discussed, such as single‐particle imaging and high‐field physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
