A hydrographic survey offshore Ningaloo reef, north-west Australia, in austral autumn 2010 revealed relatively stable subsurface water masses in the region, despite the influence of interannual variability of the Leeuwin Current (LC). The surface water mass seems slightly more variable at seasonal time scale, probably due to various contributions of the geographically distinct source waters of the LC. A subsurface nitrate maximum (~110–230 m), a prominent feature of the Ningaloo area during autumn, was consistently observed within different water masses. Tightly coupled variations of subsurface nitrate and oxygen at small vertical scale suggest it is due to local in situ remineralization of organic matter likely to accumulate along sharp physical interfaces and possibly favored by injections of oxygenated subsurface waters. Offshore, enhanced levels of surface chlorophyll a within the downwelling-favorable LC are associated with deeper mixed layer depth, eroding the shallow source of nutrients. Close to the continental shelf, these nutrients are observed to be efficiently uplifted within the core of quasi-persistent topographically trapped submesoscale cyclonic eddies dominated by nonlinear effects. A wind-driven coastal upwelling event occurred in autumn and was characterized by a relatively deep source (~100–150 m), coinciding with the subsurface maximum of nutrients, thus promoting coastal productivity locally and farther north by alongshore advection within the Ningaloo current.

While there is no persistent upwelling along the West-Australian (WA) coastline, sporadic upwelling events have been documented primarily in summer. By analyzing comparatively the variability of both Ekman and geostrophic cross-shore transports over a seasonal cycle, we show that the situation is more contrasted. Based on a composite index computed from satellite data over a 15 year period, calibrated with well documented events, we investigate the factors influencing the development of sporadic upwelling in the region. Overall, the occurrence of transient upwelling events lasting 3–10 days varies largely in space and time. Shelf regions at 31.5 and 34°S are favored with up to 12 upwelling days per month during the austral spring/summer. Although being generally favored from September to April, sporadic upwelling events can also occur at any time of the year at certain locations north of 30°S. On average over 1995–2010, the Ningaloo region (22.5°S) cumulates the highest number of upwelling (∼140 days per year) and is characterized by longer events. The intensity of intermittent upwelling is influenced by the upwelling-favorable winds, the characteristics of the Leeuwin Current (e.g., onshore geostrophic flow, mesoscale eddies and meanders, stratification and nitracline) and the local topography. This suggests that short-living nutrient enrichment of variable magnitude may occur at any time of the year at many locations along the WA coast.

The potential impacts of extreme water level events on our coasts are increasing as populations grow and sea levels rise. To better prepare for the future, coastal engineers and managers need accurate estimates of average exceedance probabilities for extreme water levels. In this paper, we estimate present day probabilities of extreme water levels around the entire coastline of Australia. Tides and storm surges generated by extra-tropical storms were included by creating a 61-year (1949-2009) hindcast of water levels using a high resolution depth averaged hydrodynamic model driven with meteorological data from a global reanalysis. Tropical cyclone-induced surges were included through numerical modelling of a database of synthetic tropical cyclones equivalent to 10,000 years of cyclone activity around Australia. Predicted water level data was analysed using extreme value theory to construct return period curves for both the water level hindcast and synthetic tropical cyclone modelling. These return period curves were then combined by taking the highest water level at each return period.

The occurrence of extreme water level events along low-lying, highly populated and/or developed coastlines can lead to devastating impacts on coastal infrastructure. Therefore it is very important that the probabilities of extreme water levels are accurately evaluated to inform flood and coastal management and for future planning. The aim of this study was to provide estimates of present day extreme total water level exceedance probabilities around the whole coastline of Australia, arising from combinations of mean sea level, astronomical tide and storm surges generated by both extra-tropical and tropical storms, but exclusive of surface gravity waves. The study has been undertaken in two main stages. In the first stage, a high-resolution (~10 km along the coast) hydrodynamic depth averaged model has been configured for the whole coastline of Australia using the Danish Hydraulics Institute’s Mike21 modelling suite of tools. The model has been forced with astronomical tidal levels, derived from the TPX07.2 global tidal model, and meteorological fields, from the US National Center for Environmental Prediction’s global reanalysis, to generate a 61-year (1949 to 2009) hindcast of water levels. This model output has been validated against measurements from 30 tide gauge sites around Australia with long records. At each of the model grid points located around the coast, time series of annual maxima and the several highest water levels for each year were derived from the multi-decadal water level hindcast and have been fitted to extreme value distributions to estimate exceedance probabilities. Stage 1 provided a reliable estimate of the present day total water level exceedance probabilities around southern Australia, which is mainly impacted by extra-tropical storms. Within the coastal waters of the eastern Indian Ocean adjacent to Western Australia, we tested the hypothesis that regenerated production (and, by inference, the microbial food web) would predominate in oligotrophic Leeuwin Current (LC) and offshore (OS) surface waters. Conversely, we expected that new production would be more important within the ∼5 times more productive shelf countercurrents (Ningaloo and Capes Currents; NC&CC) and the LC&OS deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM). Phytoplankton species composition and abundance were assessed using both light microscopy and chemotaxonomic methods, and isotopic nitrogen uptake experiments (15NO3−, 15NH4+) were performed at trace (0.05 μM) and saturating (5.0 μM) levels. Phytoplankton community structure was statistically distinct between LC&OS and countercurrent regions. Picoplankton (unicellular cyanobacteria and prochlorophytes) accounted for a mean of 55–65% of pigment biomass in LC&OS waters, with haptophytes as the other primary contributor (21–32%). Conversely, within countercurrent and shelf regions, diatoms (up to 22%) and haptophytes (up to 57%) were more abundant, although cyanobacteria still played an important role (up to 40% of pigment biomass). Absolute NO3− uptake rates for all samples ranged between 0.5 and 7.1 nmol L−1 h−1, and in countercurrent waters were not significantly different at the surface (3.0±2.1 nmol L−1 h−1; mean±SD) compared to the DCM (2.7±2.3 nmol L−1 h−1). However, in LC&OS waters, rates were significantly lower at the surface (1.2±0.7 nmol L−1 h−1) than the DCM (3.9±2.5 nmol L−1 h−1; p=0.05). These values represent conservative estimates for the region due to methodological difficulties encountered with nitrogen uptake experiments in these oligotrophic waters.
