- Abstract
This research examines the changing role of the Course Leader in further education/higher education (FE/HE) by observing the daily activities of a typical course leader over a two-term period. Major components of the role were highlighted in terms of balance, distribution of activities and constraints. The findings point to a series of fragmented, unrelated tasks vying for position in a climate of accountability. This is comparable with other research on workload. In addition to the observation of the actual role of the course leader, managers were interviewed to gauge current and future perceptions of the role. Their perceptions varied depending on their level of seniority, with the added inference that radical changes and future efficiency gains were imminent. The evidence suggests that if academic quality is to be assured, there must be a fuller appreciation of the role of the Course Leader and a review of the notion that instructional delivery and lecturer time ought to be the only targets for efficiency gains.
