201. Tailoring the Morphology of Cellulose Nanocrystals via Controlled Aggregation

Abstract: Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are bioderived nanoparticles that can be isolated from various sources of natural cellulose via acid hydrolysis. However, the link between particle morphological characteristics and their ensemble behavior is poorly understood, partly because of the difficulties in controlling the CNC morphology during their extraction process. In this work, the impacts of common post-hydrolysis treatments on the CNC morphology are investigated. The results indicate that the centrifugation step commonly applied during CNC purification favors the formation of composite particles made of aligned crystallites, referred to as 'bundles'. Scanning nanobeam electron diffraction reveals that such bundles are associated preferentially along their hydrophobic faces. This is in stark contrast to the formation of misaligned composite particles that can be achieved with ionic treatments, where an uncontrolled aggregation occurs. The functional relevance of these morphological differences is demonstrated by their effect on the cholesteric self-organization of CNCs, with bundles found to exhibit a greater chiral enhancement, whereas the misaligned composite particles found to promote gelation. This study reveals the importance of the often-disregarded purification steps on the final morphology of CNCs and their resulting ensemble properties, thereby unlocking new routes for tailoring this promising material towards a variety of applications.

Abstract: We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. 203. {\sc SimBIG}: Cosmological Constraints using Simulation-Based Inference of Galaxy Clustering with Marked Power Spectra

Abstract: We present the first $\Lambda$CDM cosmological analysis performed on a galaxy survey using marked power spectra. The marked power spectrum is the two-point function of a marked field, where galaxies are weighted by a function that depends on their local density. The presence of the mark leads these statistics to contain higher-order information of the original galaxy field, making them a good candidate to exploit the non-Gaussian information of a galaxy catalog. In this work we make use of \simbig, a forward modeling framework for galaxy clustering analyses, and perform simulation-based inference using normalizing flows to infer the posterior distribution of the $\Lambda$CDM cosmological parameters. We consider different mark configurations (ways to weight the galaxy field) and deploy them in the \simbig~pipeline to analyze the corresponding marked power spectra measured from a subset of the BOSS galaxy sample. We analyze the redshift-space mark power spectra decomposed in $\ell = 0, 2, 4$ multipoles and include scales up to the non-linear regime. Among the various mark configurations considered, the ones that give the most stringent cosmological constraints produce posterior median and $68\%$ confidence limits on the growth of structure parameters equal to $\Omega_m=0.273^{+0.040}_{-0.030}$ and $\sigma_8=0.777^{+0.077}_{-0.071}$. Compared to a perturbation theory analysis using the power spectrum of the same dataset, the \simbig~marked power spectra constraints on $\sigma_8$ are up to $1.2\times$ tighter, while no improvement is seen for the other cosmological parameters., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The sense of touch is fundamental to how we interact with the physical and digital world. Conventional interactive surfaces and tactile interfaces use electronic sensors embedded into objects, however this approach poses serious challenges both for environmental sustainability and a future of truly ubiquitous interaction systems where information is encoded into everyday objects. In this work, we present Biodegradable Interactive Materials: backyard-compostable interactive interfaces that leverage information encoded in material properties. Inspired by natural systems, we propose an architecture that programmatically encodes multidimensional information into materials themselves and combines them with wearable devices that extend human senses to perceive the embedded data. We combine unrefined biological matter from plants and algae like chlorella with natural minerals like graphite and magnetite to produce materials with varying electrical, magnetic, and surface properties. We perform in-depth analysis using physics models, computational simulations, and real-world experiments to characterize their information density and develop decoding methods. Our passive, chip-less materials can robustly encode 12 bits of information, equivalent to 4096 unique classes. We further develop wearable device prototypes that can decode this information during touch interactions using off-the-shelf sensors. We demonstrate sample applications such as customized buttons, tactile maps, and interactive surfaces. We further demonstrate the natural degradation of these interactive materials in degrade outdoors within 21 days and perform a comparative environmental analysis of the benefits of this approach.

205. Mai Ho'om\=auna i ka 'Ai: Language Models Improve Automatic Speech Recognition in Hawaiian

Abstract: In this paper we address the challenge of improving Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) for a low-resource language, Hawaiian, by incorporating large amounts of independent text data into an ASR foundation model, Whisper. To do this, we train an external language model (LM) on ~1.5M words of Hawaiian text. We then use the LM to rescore Whisper and compute word error rates (WERs) on a manually curated test set of labeled Hawaiian data. As a baseline, we use Whisper without an external LM. Experimental results reveal a small but significant improvement in WER when ASR outputs are rescored with a Hawaiian LM. The results support leveraging all available data in the development of ASR systems for underrepresented languages.

206. Multiparametric quantification and visualization of liver fat using ultrasound

Abstract: Objectives- Several ultrasound measures have shown promise for assessment of steatosis compared to traditional B-scan, however clinicians may be required to integrate information across the parameters. Here, we propose an integrated multiparametric approach, enabling simple clinical assessment of key information from combined ultrasound parameters. Methods- We have measured 13 parameters related to ultrasound and shear wave elastography. These were measured in 30 human subjects under a study of liver fat. The 13 individual measures are assessed for their predictive value using independent magnetic resonance imaging-derived proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) measurements as a reference standard. In addition, a comprehensive and fine-grain analysis is made of all possible combinations of sub-sets of these parameters to determine if any subset can be efficiently combined to predict fat fraction. Results- We found that as few as four key parameters related to ultrasound propagation are sufficient to generate a linear multiparametric parameter with a correlation against MRI-PDFF values of greater than 0.93. This optimal combination was found to have a classification area under the curve (AUC) approaching 1.0 when applying a threshold for separating steatosis grade zero from higher classes. Furthermore, a strategy is developed for applying local estimates of fat content as a color overlay to produce a visual impression of the extent and distribution of fat within the liver. Conclusion- In principle, this approach can be applied to most clinical ultrasound systems to provide the clinician and patient with a rapid and inexpensive estimate of liver fat content.

207. Exact solution to Maxwell's equations for the infinite ideal solenoid with a time-dependent surface current

Abstract: Very little previous literature has considered the *exact* solution to Maxwell's equations for an infinite ideal cylindrical solenoid with an arbitrary time-dependent azimuthal surface current $K(t) \hat{\bf \phi}$. Most of the previous literature has focused on special cases and has approached the problem by calculating the magnetic vector potential ${\bf A}$, which requires performing some very complicated surface integrals over the cylinder. In this article, we take a simpler approach and directly tackle Maxwell's equations without ever invoking a vector potential. The high symmetry of the geometry allows us to reduce Maxwell's equations to just two coupled partial differential equations for two functions of two real variables, which can be readily solved numerically. We find the general analytic solution to these PDEs and derive the Green's functions for the electromagnetic fields, which allow us to calculate the fields directly from the surface current $K(t)$. We also briefly discuss a family of exact formal solutions that (the author believes) has not appeared in the previous literature because it corresponds to a current $K(t)$ that does not have a Fourier transform., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure

208. Do LLMs Find Human Answers To Fact-Driven Questions Perplexing? A Case Study on Reddit

Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) have been shown to be proficient in correctly answering questions in the context of online discourse. However, the study of using LLMs to model human-like answers to fact-driven social media questions is still under-explored. In this work, we investigate how LLMs model the wide variety of human answers to fact-driven questions posed on several topic-specific Reddit communities, or subreddits. We collect and release a dataset of 409 fact-driven questions and 7,534 diverse, human-rated answers from 15 r/Ask{Topic} communities across 3 categories: profession, social identity, and geographic location. We find that LLMs are considerably better at modeling highly-rated human answers to such questions, as opposed to poorly-rated human answers. Abstract: Reliable human evaluation is critical to the development of successful natural language generation models, but achieving it is notoriously difficult. Stability is a crucial requirement when ranking systems by quality: consistent ranking of systems across repeated evaluations is not just desirable, but essential. Without it, there is no reliable foundation for hill-climbing or product launch decisions. In this paper, we use machine translation and its state-of-the-art human evaluation framework, MQM, as a case study to understand how to set up reliable human evaluations that yield stable conclusions. We investigate the optimal configurations for item allocation to raters, number of ratings per item, and score normalization. Our study on two language pairs provides concrete recommendations for designing replicable human evaluation studies. Abstract: In multilayer moir\'e heterostructures, the interference of multiple twist angles ubiquitously leads to tunable ultra-long-wavelength patterns known as supermoir\'e lattices. However, their impact on the system's many-body electronic phase diagram remains largely unexplored. We present local compressibility measurements revealing numerous incompressible states resulting from supermoir\'e-lattice-scale isospin symmetry breaking driven by strong interactions. By using the supermoir\'e lattice occupancy as a probe of isospin symmetry, we observe an unexpected doubling of the miniband filling near $\nu=-2$, possibly indicating a hidden phase transition or normal-state pairing proximal to the superconducting phase. Our work establishes supermoir\'e lattices as a tunable parameter for designing novel quantum phases and an effective tool for unraveling correlated phenomena in moir\'e materials.

Abstract: Incorporating the AC power flow equations into unit commitment models has the potential to avoid costly corrective actions required by less accurate power flow approximations. However, research on unit commitment with AC power flow constraints has been limited to a few relatively small test networks. This work investigates large-scale AC unit commitment problems for the day-ahead market and develops decomposition algorithms capable of obtaining high-quality solutions at industry-relevant scales. The results illustrate that a simple algorithm that only seeks to satisfy unit commitment, reserve, and AC power balance constraints can obtain surprisingly high-quality solutions to this AC unit commitment problem. However, a naive strategy that prioritizes reserve feasibility leads to AC infeasibility, motivating the need to design heuristics that can effectively balance reserve and AC feasibility. Finally, this work explores a parallel decomposition strategy that allows the proposed algorithm to obtain feasible solutions on large cases within the two hour time limit required by typical day-ahead market operations.

212. The SNO+ Journey to $0\nu\beta\beta$

Abstract: SNO+ is a large multipurpose experiment with the ultimate goal of searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{130}\mathrm{Te}$. After a commissioning phase with water as the target medium, during which acquired data allowed for measurements of solar neutrinos and the detection of reactor antineutrinos, SNO+ is now filled with 780 tonnes of liquid scintillator. The higher light yield of the scintillator enhances the physics capabilities of the experiment, and a physics program including reactor, geo and solar neutrinos is currently underway. The water and unloaded scintillator phases provide crucial commissioning milestones in preparation for the tellurium loading, such as calibrating the detector and making extensive background constraint measurements as components of the final scintillator cocktail are gradually added. In a first phase, 3900~kg of natural tellurium (0.5%) will be added to the scintillator for a predicted sensitivity of about $2\times20^{26}$ years (90% CL) with 3 years of livetime. Abstract: Next-generation low-cost semiconductors such as halide perovskites exhibit optoelectronic properties dominated by nanoscale variations in their structure, composition and photophysics. While microscopy provides a proxy for ultimate device function, past works have focused on neat thin-films on insulating substrates, missing crucial information about charge extraction losses and recombination losses introduced by transport layers. Here we use a multimodal operando microscopy toolkit to measure nanoscale current-voltage curves, recombination losses and chemical composition in an array of state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells before and after extended operational stress. We apply this toolkit to the same scan areas before and after extended operation to reveal that devices with the highest performance have the lowest initial performance spatial heterogeneity - a crucial link that is missed in conventional microscopy. We find that subtle compositional engineering of the perovskite has surprising effects on local disorder and resilience to operational stress. Minimising variations in local efficiency, rather than compositional disorder, is predictive of improved performance and stability. Modulating the interfaces with different contact layers or passivation treatments can increase initial performance but can also lead to dramatic nanoscale, interface-dominated degradation even in the presence of local performance homogeneity, inducing spatially varying transport, recombination, and electrical losses. These operando measurements of full devices act as screenable diagnostic tools, uniquely unveiling the microscopic mechanistic origins of device performance losses and degradation in an array of halide perovskite devices and treatments. Abstract: Effective hospital capacity management is pivotal for enhancing patient care quality, operational efficiency, and healthcare system resilience, notably during demand spikes like those seen in the COVID-19 pandemic. However, devising optimal capacity strategies is complicated by fluctuating demand, conflicting objectives, and multifaceted practical constraints. This study presents a data-driven framework to optimize capacity management decisions within hospital systems during surge events. Two key decisions are optimized over a tactical planning horizon: allocating dedicated capacity to surge patients and transferring incoming patients between emergency departments (EDs) of hospitals to better distribute demand. The optimization models are formulated as robust mixed-integer linear programs, enabling efficient computation of optimal decisions that are robust against demand uncertainty. The models incorporate practical constraints and costs, including setup times and costs for adding surge capacity, restrictions on ED patient transfers, and relative costs of different decisions that reflect impacts on care quality and operational efficiency. The methodology is evaluated retrospectively in a hospital system during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to demonstrate the potential impact of the recommended decisions. The results show that optimally allocating beds and transferring just 32 patients over a 63 day period around the peak, about one transfer every two days, could have reduced the need for surge capacity in the hospital system by nearly 90%. Overall, this work introduces a practical tool to transform capacity management decision-making, enabling proactive planning and the use of data-driven recommendations to improve outcomes.

Abstract: Data-driven optimization models have the potential to significantly improve hospital capacity management, particularly during demand surges, when effective allocation of capacity is most critical and challenging. However, integrating models into existing processes in a way that provides value requires recognizing that hospital administrators are ultimately responsible for making capacity management decisions, and carefully building trustworthy and accessible tools for them. In this study, we develop an interactive, user-friendly, electronic dashboard for informing hospital capacity management decisions during surge periods. The dashboard integrates real-time hospital data, predictive analytics, and optimization models. It allows hospital administrators to interactively customize parameters, enabling them to explore a range of scenarios, and provides real-time updates on recommended optimal decisions. The dashboard was created through a participatory design process, involving hospital administrators in the development team to ensure practical utility, trustworthiness, transparency, explainability, and usability. We successfully deployed our dashboard within the Johns Hopkins Health System during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, addressing the increased need for tools to inform hospital capacity management. It was used on a daily basis, with results regularly communicated to hospital leadership. Abstract: An increasing number of studies employ virtual reality (VR) to evaluate interactions between autonomous vehicles (AVs) and pedestrians. VR simulators are valued for their cost-effectiveness, flexibility in developing various traffic scenarios, safe conduct of user studies, and acceptable ecological validity. Reviewing the literature between 2010 and 2020, we found 31 empirical studies using VR as a testing apparatus for both implicit and explicit communication. By performing a systematic analysis, we identified current coverage of critical use cases, obtained a comprehensive account of factors influencing pedestrian behavior in simulated traffic scenarios, and assessed evaluation measures. Based on the findings, we present a set of recommendations for implementing VR pedestrian simulators and propose directions for future research.

Abstract: Augmented reality (AR) has the potential to fundamentally change how people engage with increasingly interactive urban environments. However, many challenges exist in designing and evaluating these new urban AR experiences, such as technical constraints and safety concerns associated with outdoor AR. We contribute to this domain by assessing the use of virtual reality (VR) for simulating wearable urban AR experiences, allowing participants to interact with future AR interfaces in a realistic, safe and controlled setting. This paper describes two wearable urban AR applications (pedestrian navigation and autonomous mobility) simulated in VR. Based on a thematic analysis of interview data collected across the two studies, we found that the VR simulation successfully elicited feedback on the functional benefits of AR concepts and the potential impact of urban contextual factors, such as safety concerns, attentional capacity, and social considerations. At the same time, we highlighted the limitations of this approach in terms of assessing the AR interface's visual quality and providing exhaustive contextual information. Abstract: We present a general framework for applying learning algorithms and heuristical guidance to the verification of Markov decision processes (MDPs). The primary goal of our techniques is to improve performance by avoiding an exhaustive exploration of the state space, instead focussing on particularly relevant areas of the system, guided by heuristics. Our work builds on the previous results of Br{\'{a}}zdil et al., significantly extending it as well as refining several details and fixing errors. The presented framework focuses on probabilistic reachability, which is a core problem in verification, and is instantiated in two distinct scenarios. The first assumes that full knowledge of the MDP is available, in particular precise transition probabilities. It performs a heuristic-driven partial exploration of the model, yielding precise lower and upper bounds on the required probability. The second tackles the case where we may only sample the MDP without knowing the exact transition dynamics. Here, we obtain probabilistic guarantees, again in terms of both the lower and upper bounds, which provides efficient stopping criteria for the approximation. In particular, the latter is an extension of statistical model-checking (SMC) for unbounded properties in MDPs. In contrast to other related approaches, we do not restrict our attention to time-bounded (finite-horizon) or discounted properties, nor assume any particular structural properties of the MDP.

Abstract: To study the chemical evolution across cosmic epochs, we investigate Ne, S, Cl, and Ar abundance patterns in the COS Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY). CLASSY comprises local star-forming galaxies (0.02 < z < 0.18) with enhanced star-formation rates, making them strong analogues to high-z star-forming galaxies. With direct measurements of electron temperature, we derive accurate ionic abundances for all elements and assess ionization correction factors (ICFs) to account for unseen ions and derive total abundances. We find Ne/O, S/O, Cl/O, and Ar/O exhibit constant trends with gas-phase metallicity for 12+log(O/H) < 8.5 but significant correlation for Ne/O and Ar/O with metallicity for 12+log(O/H) > 8.5, likely due to ICFs. Thus, applicability of the ICFs to integrated spectra of galaxies could bias results, underestimating true abundance ratios. Using CLASSY as a local reference, we assess the evolution of Ne/O, S/O, and Ar/O in galaxies at z>3, finding no cosmic evolution of Ne/O, while the lack of direct abundance determinations for S/O and Ar/O can bias the interpretation of the evolution of these elements. We determine the fundamental metallicity relationship (FMR) for CLASSY and compare to the high-redshift FMR, finding no evolution. Finally, we perform the first mass-neon relationship analysis across cosmic epochs, finding a slight evolution to high Ne at later epochs. 222. Satellite quenching and morphological transformation of galaxies in groups and clusters

Abstract: We investigate the role that dense environments have on the quenching of star formation and the transformation of morphology for a sample of galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We make a distinction between galaxies falling into groups $(13 \leq \log{(M_{\text{halo}}/M_{\odot})} < 14)$ and clusters $(\log{(M_{\text{halo}}/M_{\odot})} \geq 14)$, and compare to a large sample of field galaxies. Using galaxy position in projected phase space as a proxy for time since infall, we study how galaxy specific star formation rate (sSFR) and morphology, parameterized by the bulge-to-total light ratio (B/T), change over time. After controlling for stellar mass, we find clear trends of increasing quenched and elliptical fractions as functions of infall time for galaxies falling into both groups and clusters. The trends are strongest for low mass galaxies falling into clusters. By computing quenching and morphological transformation timescales, we find evidence that star formation quenching occurs faster than morphological transformation in both environments. Comparing field galaxies to recently infalling galaxies, we determine there is pre-processing of both star formation and morphology, with pre-processing affecting star formation rates more strongly. 223. Designing for Projection-based Communication between Autonomous Vehicles and Pedestrians

Abstract: Recent studies have investigated new approaches for communicating an autonomous vehicle's (AV) intent and awareness to pedestrians. This paper adds to this body of work by presenting the design and evaluation of in-situ projections on the road. Our design combines common traffic light patterns with aesthetic visual elements. We describe the iterative design process and the prototyping methods used in each stage. The final design concept was represented as a virtual reality simulation and evaluated with 18 participants in four different street crossing scenarios, which included three scenarios that simulated various degrees of system errors. We found that different design elements were able to support participants' confidence in their decision even when the AV failed to correctly detect their presence. We also identified elements in our design that needed to be more clearly communicated. Based on these findings, the paper presents a series of design recommendations for projection-based communication between AVs and pedestrians.

Abstract: Wearable augmented reality (AR) offers new ways for supporting the interaction between autonomous vehicles (AVs) and pedestrians due to its ability to integrate timely and contextually relevant data into the user's field of view. This article presents novel wearable AR concepts that assist crossing pedestrians in multi-vehicle scenarios where several AVs frequent the road from both directions. Three concepts with different communication approaches for signaling responses from multiple AVs to a crossing request, as well as a conventional pedestrian push button, were simulated and tested within a virtual reality environment. The results showed that wearable AR is a promising way to reduce crossing pedestrians' cognitive load when the design offers both individual AV responses and a clear signal to cross. The willingness of pedestrians to adopt a wearable AR solution, however, is subject to different factors, including costs, data privacy, technical defects, liability risks, maintenance duties, and form factors. We further found that all participants favored sending a crossing request to AVs rather than waiting for the vehicles to detect their intentions-pointing to an important gap and opportunity in the current AV-pedestrian interaction literature.

Abstract: Autonomous vehicles (AVs) may use external interfaces, such as LED light bands, to communicate with pedestrians safely and intuitively. While previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of these interfaces in simple traffic scenarios involving one pedestrian and one vehicle, their performance in more complex scenarios with multiple road users remains unclear. The scalability of AV external communication has therefore attracted increasing attention, prompting the need for further investigation. This scoping review synthesises information from 54 papers to identify seven key scalability issues in multi-vehicle and multi-pedestrian environments, with Clarity of Recipients, Information Overload, and Multi-Lane Safety emerging as the most pressing concerns. To guide future research in scalable AV-pedestrian interactions, we propose high-level design directions focused on three communication loci: vehicle, infrastructure, and pedestrian. Our work contributes the groundwork and a roadmap for designing simplified, coordinated, and targeted external AV communication, ultimately improving safety and efficiency in complex traffic scenarios.

Abstract: Policymakers advocate for the use of external Human-Machine Interfaces (eHMIs) to allow autonomous vehicles (AVs) to communicate their intentions or status. Nonetheless, scalability concerns in complex traffic scenarios arise, such as potentially increasing pedestrian cognitive load or conveying contradictory signals. Building upon precursory works, our study explores 'interconnected eHMIs,' where multiple AV interfaces are interconnected to provide pedestrians with clear and unified information. In a virtual reality study (N=32), we assessed the effectiveness of this concept in improving pedestrian safety and their crossing experience. We compared these results against two conditions: no eHMIs and unconnected eHMIs. Results indicated interconnected eHMIs enhanced safety feelings and encouraged cautious crossings. However, certain design elements, such as the use of the colour red, led to confusion and discomfort. Prior knowledge slightly influenced perceptions of interconnected eHMIs, underscoring the need for refined user education. We conclude with practical implications and future eHMI design research directions.

Abstract: In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

228. Anomalous Hall Crystals in Rhombohedral Multilayer Graphene II: General Mechanism and a Minimal Model

Abstract: We propose a minimal "three-patch model" for the anomalous Hall crystal (AHC), a topological electronic state that spontaneously breaks both time-reversal symmetry and continuous translation symmetry. The proposal for this state is inspired by the recently observed integer and fractional quantum Hall states in rhombohedral multilayer graphene at zero magnetic field. There, interaction effects appear to amplify the effects of a weak moir\'e potential, leading to the formation of stable, isolated Chern bands. It has been further shown that Chern bands are stabilized in mean field calculations even without a moir\'e potential, enabling a realization of the AHC state. Our model is built upon the dissection of the Brillouin zone into patches centered around high symmetry points. Within this model, the wavefunctions at high symmetry points fully determine the topology and energetics of the state. We extract two quantum geometrical phases of the non-interacting wavefunctions that control the stability of the topologically nontrivial AHC state. The model predicts that the AHC state wins over the topological trivial Wigner crystal in a wide range of parameters, and agrees very well with the results of full self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations of the rhombohedral multilayer graphene Hamiltonian., Comment: 15+10 pages, 9+5 figures

Abstract: Following the Pluto fly-by of the New Horizons spacecraft, the mission provided a unique opportunity to explore the Kuiper Belt in-situ. The possibility existed to fly-by a Kuiper Belt object (KBO) as well as to observe additional objects at distances closer than are feasible from earth-orbit facilities. However, at the time of launch no KBOs were known about that were accessible by the spacecraft. In this paper we present the results of 10 years of observations and three uniquely dedicated efforts -- two ground-based using the Subaru Suprime Camera, the Magellan MegaCam and IMACS Cameras, and one with the Hubble Space Telescope -- to find such KBOs for study. In this paper we overview the search criteria and strategies employed in our work and detail the analysis efforts to locate and track faint objects in the galactic plane. We also present a summary of all of the KBOs that were discovered as part of our efforts and how spacecraft targetability was assessed, including a detailed description of our astrometric analysis which included development of an extensive secondary calibration network. Overall, these efforts resulted in the discovery of 89 KBOs including 11 which became objects for distant observation by New Horizons and (486958) Arrokoth which became the first post-Pluto fly-by destination., Comment: Accepted to PSJ. 40 pages, 10 figures, 10 tables

230. Large Language Models for Document-Level Event-Argument Data Augmentation for Challenging Role Types

Abstract: Event Argument Extraction (EAE) is an extremely difficult information extraction problem -- with significant limitations in few-shot cross-domain (FSCD) settings. A common solution to FSCD modeling is data augmentation. Unfortunately, existing augmentation methods are not well-suited to a variety of real-world EAE contexts including (i) The need to model long documents (10+ sentences) (ii) The need to model zero and few-shot roles (i.e. event roles with little to no training representation). In this work, we introduce two novel LLM-powered data augmentation frameworks for synthesizing extractive document-level EAE samples using zero in-domain training data. Our highest performing methods provide a 16-pt increase in F1 score on extraction of zero shot role types. To better facilitate analysis of cross-domain EAE, we additionally introduce a new metric, Role-Depth F1 (RDF1), which uses statistical depth to identify roles in the target domain which are semantic outliers with respect to roles observed in the source domain. Abstract: Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We report on a measurement of astrophysical tau neutrinos with 9.7 years of IceCube data. Using convolutional neural networks trained on images derived from simulated events, seven candidate $\nu_\tau$ events were found with visible energies ranging from roughly 20 TeV to 1 PeV and a median expected parent $\nu_\tau$ energy of about 200 TeV. Considering backgrounds from astrophysical and atmospheric neutrinos, and muons from $\pi^\pm/K^\pm$ decays in atmospheric air showers, we obtain a total estimated background of about 0.5 events, dominated by non-$\nu_\tau$ astrophysical neutrinos. Thus, we rule out the absence of astrophysical $\nu_\tau$ at the $5\sigma$ level. Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory relies on an array of photomultiplier tubes to detect Cherenkov light produced by charged particles in the South Pole ice. IceCube data analyses depend on an in-depth characterization of the glacial ice, and on novel approaches in event reconstruction that utilize fast approximations of photoelectron yields. Here, a more accurate model is derived for event reconstruction that better captures our current knowledge of ice optical properties. When evaluated on a Monte Carlo simulation set, the median angular resolution for in-ice particle showers improves by over a factor of three compared to a reconstruction based on a simplified model of the ice. The most substantial improvement is obtained when including effects of birefringence due to the polycrystalline structure of the ice. Abstract: Quasi-linear convective systems (QLCSs) are responsible for approximately a quarter of all tornado events in the United States, but no field campaigns have focused specifically on collecting data to understand QLCS tornadogenesis. The Propagation, Evolution, and Rotation in Linear Storms (PERiLS) project was the first observational study of tornadoes associated with QLCSs ever undertaken. Participants were drawn from more than 10 universities, laboratories, and institutes, with over 100 students participating in field activities. The PERiLS field phases spanned 2 years, late winters and early springs of 2022 and 2023, to increase the probability of intercepting significant tornadic QLCS events in a range of large-scale and local environments. The field phases of PERiLS collected data in nine tornadic and nontornadic QLCSs with unprecedented detail and diversity of measurements. The design and execution of the PERiLS field phase and preliminary data and ongoing analyses are shown. Abstract: * Context.-Existing targeted cystic fibrosis screening assays miss important pathogenic CFTR variants in the ethnically diverse US population. Objective.-To evaluate the analytic performance of a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR)/capillary electrophoresis (CE) CFTR assay panel that simultaneously interrogates primary pathogenic variants of different ethnic/ancestral groups. Design.-Performance characteristic assessment and variant coverage comparison of the panel with a focus on ethnicity-specific CFTR variants were performed. Sample DNA was primarily from whole blood or cell lines. Detection of CFTR carriers was compared across several commercially available CFTR kits and recommended variant sets based on panel content. Results.-The panel interrogated 65 pathogenic CFTR variants representing 92% coverage from a recent genomic sequencing survey of the US population, including 4 variants with top 5 frequency in African or Asian populations not reflected in other targeted panels. In simulation studies, the panel represented 95% of carriers across the global population, resulting in a 6.9% to 19.0% higher carrier detection rate compared with 10 targeted panels or variant sets. Precision and sensitivity/specificity were 100% concordant. Multisite sample-level genotyping accuracy was 99.2%. Across PCR and CE instruments, sample-level genotyping accuracy was 97.1 %, with greater than 99% agreement for all variant-level metrics. Conclusions.-The CFTR assay achieves 92% or higher coverage of CFTR variants in diverse populations and provides improved pan-ethnic coverage of minority subgroups of the US populace. The assay can be completed within 5 hours from DNA sample to genotype, and performance data exceed acceptance criteria for analytic metrics. This assay panel content may help address gaps in ancestry-specific CFTR genotypes while providing a streamlined procedure with rapidly generated results. Abstract: This is the revised edition of the 2023 "Report on the Condition of Education," which is a congressionally mandated annual report from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Using the most recent data available (at the time this report was written) from NCES and other sources, the report contains key indicators on the condition of education in the United States at all levels, from prekindergarten through postsecondary, as well as labor force outcomes and international comparisons. There are core indicators that are updated every year and spotlight indicators that provide in-depth analyses on topics of interest to education agencies, policymakers, researchers, and the public. At the broadest level, the Condition of Education Indicator System is organized into five sections: family characteristics; preprimary, elementary, and secondary education; postsecondary education; population characteristics and economic outcomes; and international comparisons. The Report on the "Condition of Education 2023" encompasses key findings from the Condition of Education Indicator System. Abstract: The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) seeks to improve student outcomes by promoting a variety of student success efforts. These efforts include direct programs with well-defined target populations and program participants, offering specific student support services following a program model, and indirect programs aimed at providing faculty and staff members professional development or at improving campus facilities. MDRC led an implementation study of student success programs across the state that were funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Education Stabilization Fund Program Governor's Emergency Education Relief (GEER II) Fund. This fund was a COVID-19 recovery initiative, allowing recipients great flexibility in the use of grants, evident in the findings below. A total of nearly $12 million in grants was disbursed to 59 institutions of higher education in Texas. This report presents: (1) implementation research findings from the 59 institutions; (2) highlights research findings from previously conducted, rigorous evaluations of student support programs; and (3) offers recommendations for future research and practice.
