206. Information systems interoperability: what lies beneath?

Abstract

Interoperability is the most critical issue facing businesses that need to access information from multiple information systems. Our objective in this research is to develop a comprehensive framework and methodology to facilitate semantic interoperability among distributed and heterogeneous information systems. A comprehensive framework for managing various semantic conflicts is proposed. Our proposed framework provides a unified view of the underlying representational and reasoning formalism for the semantic mediation process. This framework is then used as a basis for automating the detection and resolution of semantic conflicts among heterogeneous information sources. We define several types of semantic mediators to achieve semantic interoperability. A domain-independent ontology is used to capture various semantic conflicts. A mediation-based query processing technique is developed to provide uniform and integrated access to the multiple heterogeneous databases. A usable prototype is implemented as a proof-of-concept for this work. Finally, the usefulness of our approach is evaluated using three cases in different application domains. Various heterogeneous datasets are used during the evaluation phase. The results of the evaluation suggest that correct identification and construction of both schema and ontology-schema mapping knowledge play very important roles in achieving interoperability at both the data and schema levels. Abstract

Establishing semantic interoperability among heterogeneous information sources has been a critical issue in the database community for the past two decades. Despite the critical importance, current approaches to semantic interoperability of heterogeneous databases have not been sufficiently effective. We propose a common ontology called Semantic Conflict Resolution Ontology (SCROL) that addresses the inherent difficulties in the conventional approaches, i.e., federated schema and domain ontology approaches. SCROL provides a systematic method for automatically detecting and resolving various semantic conflicts in heterogeneous databases. SCROL provides a dynamic mechanism of comparing and manipulating contextual knowledge of each information source, which is useful in achieving semantic interoperability among heterogeneous databases. We show how SCROL is used for detecting and resolving semantic conflicts between semantically equivalent schema and data elements. In addition, we present evaluation results to show that SCROL can be successfully used to automate the process of identifying and resolving semantic conflicts. Abstract

The formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) has gained substantial interest from researchers because of its important impact on climate change (IPCC, 2015;Seinfeld and Pandis, 2016), urban visibility (Chen et al., 2012;Ren et al., 2018), and human health (Requia et al., 2018). For comparison, the CAMx model was simulated with two different SOA modules: the original organic gas-aerosol partitioning and oxidation module (SOAP2.2) and the UNIPAR SOA module of this study. By exploiting the explicit structures of oxygenated products, the UNIPAR model is capable of processing aerosol chemistry to simulate SOA formation at different phase states (i.e., dry and wet) of salted aerosol in the setting of various air pollutant emissions (hydrocarbons, NOx and SO2). Abstract

The behaviours of microparticles inside a sessile droplet actuated by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) were investigated, where the SAWs produced an acoustic streaming flow and imparted an acoustic radiation force on the microparticles. The Rayleigh waves formed by a comb-like interdigital transducer were made to propagate along the surface of a LiNbO3 substrate in order to allow the manipulation of microparticles in a label-free and non-contact manner. Polystyrene microparticles were first employed to describe the behaviours inside a sessile droplet. The influence of the volume of the sessile droplet on the behaviours of the microparticles was examined by changing the contact angle of the droplet. Next, cancer cells were suspended in a sessile droplet, and the influence of contact angle on the behaviours of the cancer cells was investigated. A long gelation time was afforded by using a PEGylated fibrin gel. A primary tumour was mimicked by patterning the cancer cells to be concentrated in the middle of the sessile droplet. The non-contact manipulation property of acoustic waves was indicated to be biocompatible and enabled a structure-free platform configuration. Three-dimensional aggregated culture models were observed to make the cancer cells display an elevated expression of E-cadherin. The efficacy of the anticancer drug tirapazamine increased in the aggregated cancer cells, attributed to the low levels of oxygen in this formation of cancer cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

During the May-June 2016 International Cooperative Air Quality Field Study in Korea (KORUS-AQ), light synoptic meteorological forcing facilitated Seoul metropolitan pollution outflow to reach the remote Taehwa Research Forest (TRF) site and cause regulatory exceedances of ozone on 24 days. Two of these severe pollution events are thoroughly examined. The first, occurring on 17 May 2016, tracks transboundary pollution transport exiting eastern China and the Yellow Sea, traversing the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA), and then reaching TRF in the afternoon hours with severely polluted conditions. This case study indicates that although outflow from China and the Yellow Sea were elevated with respect to chemically unperturbed conditions, the regulatory exceedance at TRF was directly linked in time, space, and altitude to urban Seoul emissions. The second case studied, occurring on 09 June 2016, reveals that increased levels of biogenic emissions, in combination with amplified urban emissions, were associated with severe levels of pollutions and a regulatory exceedance at TRF. In summary, domestic emissions may be causing more pollution than by trans-boundary pathways, which have been historically believed to be the major source of air pollution in South Korea. The case studies are assessed with multiple aircraft, model (photochemical and meteorological) simulations, in-situ chemical sampling, and extensive ground-based profiling at TRF. These observations clearly identify TRF and the surrounding rural communities as receptor sites for severe pollution events associated with Seoul outflow, which will result in long-term negative effects to both human health and agriculture in the affected areas.
