Diagnostic screening for hepatitis B and tuberculosis infection bears a very important role for health care professionals even considering the decreasing epidemiological trends. According to the WHO predictions in 2030 these diseases will remain at third and fourth places among the causes of death for infectious diseases in industrial countries. The aim of this study is to verify the presence of hepatitis B and tuberculosis prophylaxis among the entry requirements for Medical Schools (MED) and Healthcare Professions Degree (PS) courses in 2011/2012 enrollment announcements. We examined 39 websites of Italian Public and Private Universities and we discovered 38 different announcements for MED and PS courses looking for any reference about hepatitis B and tuberculosis vaccinations and Mantoux skin test. The statistical analysis is descriptive (frequency tables). Hepatitis B vaccination was required in 7 (18.4%) enrollment announcements for MED and 6 (13.6%) for PS, respectively. Tuberculosis vaccination and/or Mantoux skin test were found among requirements of only 10 announcements for MED and 7 for PS, respectively. According to this study there is a great and unexpected variability among the different universities. A homologation of these requirements would be strongly desirable among Italian regions and on the entire national territory.

The management of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has progressed over the last 3 decades due to advances in chemotherapeutic drugs and targeted agents improving survival and quality of life. In particular erlotinib, an orally available human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER1/EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor advancing through clinical trials for the treatment of various human malignancies in a large placebo-controlled phase III study, has shown a significantly better OS vs. placebo suggesting its potential benefits in third line and possibly in second line treatments. The association of erlotinib with ionizing radiation has been recently published showing an enhancing antitumor activity and good tolerance. No information are available on side effects when erlotinib is associated with abdominal hypofractionated radiotherapy although diarrhoea is the most known side effect dose-limiting toxicity when the abdomen is treated. Here we report a fatal acute diarrhoea in a metastatic NSCLC patient taking erlotinib during abdominal hypofractionated radiotherapy for metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC).

Objectives: To report a new case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the prostate., Methods: We evaluated clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and evolution of a 68-year-old patient with an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the prostate., Results: The patient did not receive any of the treatments suggested by our department, having a favourable outcome for 28 months; after this period he presented abdominal metastases which where surgically excised. Adjuvant radiotherapy was indicated., Conclusions: The adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare tumor. The treatment of choice of these patients is radical prostatectomy and close follow-up.

The authors report their results in the laser therapy of 30 calcific shoulder joint periarthritis. In two out of the ten radiographed cases, at the end of therapy, the complete disappearance of calcifications has been shown and in one case a decrease in calcification volume has been demonstrated. In the follow up after 6 months, 80% of clinically checked patients had no painful relapse.
