Specimens of P. gracilicaudatus are recorded from the Townsville area, extending the known Queensland range about 320 km north-west from the Mackay district, its previous northern limit. Descriptions of the trapping sites, trapping method and pelage, as well as measurements, are given.

A method and apparatus is developed to monitor nondestructively the turbidity of colorless bulk material. The method employs illumination and measuring spots of equal and small sizes (radius rm) at the same site of the sample surface. The Kubelka-Munk scattering coefficient may be measured in nonabsorbing material but calibration is necessary. The range then is approximately 1/(8rm) < S < 10/rm. A flexibly connected miniature measuring head (rm ≃ 0.13 mm) is connected to a lamp-detector unit by optical fibers. Polychromatic light from a xenon lamp is used. The present apparatus is especially designed for dental research, but biological tissues and also commercially available liquids, papers, and plastics can be monitored for their scattering behavior.

Water flux and metabolic rate were measured using a low-level, doubly-labelled water technique in eight free-living greater gliders, Petauroides volans which were maintaining constant body masses at about 1 kg in eucalypt forest near Maryborough, Queensland. Mean water influx was 88.03.2 mL d-' and mean metabolic rate was 25.1 L C02 d-' or 520 kJ d-'. These arboreal folivores have field metabolic rates and water influx rates that are 96% and 71% respectively of those predicted for a herbivorous marsupial of their body mass. Assuming that faecal energy losses were 43% of gross energy intakes and that urinary energy losses were 15% of digestible energy intakes, the gross energy intake of the animals was about 1130 kJ d-'. Animals would need to eat between 45 and 50 g of dry matter daily to satisfy these energy requirements. Based on these results, a preliminary energy budget for greater gliders has been proposed.

R Maslennikov-type, single-stroke deep-drawing process is described. Instead of poly-urethane, an easily (plastically) deforming agent is used. The agent is co-extruded with the blank. The blank's thickness does not essentially change in the process. The purpose of the paper is experimentally showing that the plastic potential of the blank materials allows single-stroke (cold) deep-drawing with drawing ratios up to 6. The process has the disadvantage of the removal of the agent. It could be overcome using Ga- or In-alloys as agents or fluids exhibiting inverse thixotropic behaviour. Even water could be applied to very high-speed deep-drawing. The paper contributes to the fundamental understanding of the potentials of the approach. No industrial applications are given.

Design and construction of a machine that cats 80-μm slices of sound and carious dental enamel and other calcified tissues is described. These slices can be used for quantitative microradiographic studies. Preparation takes minutes. Thickness for a given slice is uniform within 2 μn, mean thickness is within 4 μm of the intended value and roughness is about 0.1 μm. Commercial components have been used where possible.' Information is provided to permit purchase of the components of the machine and its construction in the average university workshop.

Surveillance of hospital-acquired infections can be approximated by repeated surveys that are performed in a standardized, cost-effective manner. We developed an integrated software system for serial electronic hospital-wide point prevalence surveys using algorithms that proved highly sensitive and specific over a 5-year period in a large university medical center.Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol2014;35(7):888–890

A brief description is given of the design principles and layout of the Dutch–Belgian beamline at the ESRF. This beamline optimizes the use of the available bending‐magnet radiation fan by splitting the beam into two branches, each accommodating two experimental techniques.

Two-way parabolic equation (PE) techniques are used to compute the radar cross-section of two-dimensional objects. A finite-difference implementation of a wide angle PE in combination with non-local boundary conditions allows fast execution times on a desktop computer. The technique is applied to scattering by a cylinder and by an idealised aircraft shape. Numerical results are in good agreement with calculations using other methods.

A constant‐forcepocket probe is constructed by application of a constant‐force spring. This is wound on two cylinders in reverse‐winding mode. As the distance to the probe top is constant, a constant force is obtained. Very little experience is needed to master the rotating of the handle while using the probe.

BackgroundPrevious research demonstrates that posttraumatic memory reexperiencing, depression, anxiety, and guilt-shame are frequently co-occurring problems that may be causally related.ObjectivesThe present study utilized Perceived Causal Relations (PCR) scaling in order to assess participants’ own attributions concerning whether and to what degree these co-occurring problems may be causally interrelated.Methods288 young adults rated the frequency and respective PCR scores associating their symptoms of posttraumatic reexperiencing, depression, anxiety, and guilt-shame.ResultsPCR scores were found to moderate associations between the frequency of posttraumatic memory reexperiencing, depression, anxiety, and guilt-shame. Network analyses showed that the number of feedback loops between PCR scores was positively associated with symptom frequencies.ConclusionResults tentatively support the interpretation of PCR scores as moderators of the association between different psychological problems, and lend support to the hypothesis that increased symptom frequencies are observed in the presence of an increased number of causal feedback loops between symptoms. Additionally, a perceived causal role for the reexperiencing of traumatic memories in exacerbating emotional disturbance was identified.

Proinftammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α and interleukin [IL]-6 and -8), counterinftammatory compounds (IL-I0 and soluble TNF receptors p55 and p75 [sTNFR-55 and -75]), and hemostatic parameters were determined in 38 patients with meningococcal septic shock. Eleven patients (29%) died. Serum levels of pro- and counterinftammatory compounds and plasma levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)-1 were significantly higher in nonsurvivors. The interval between appearance of petechiae and blood sampling was shorter in nonsurvivors than in survivors (3.6± 2.4 vs. 6.1 ± 3.3 h; P = .04). This interval correlated strongly with the levels of TNF-α, IL-6, -8, and -10, sTNFR-55 and -75, and PAI-1. However, with the exception of PAI-1, differences between concentrations of these mediators disappeared after adjustment for the interval. PAI-1 levels correlated with TNF-α concentrations (r = .75; P < .001) and were 1.9 (P = .01) times higher in nonsurvivors at a similar TNF-a concentration. Thus, an increased PAI-1 response to TNF-α may be associated with fatality, probably because of polymorphism of the PAI-1 gene.
