Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We assess the accuracy of the ghost-rotationally-invariant slave-boson (g-RISB) theory in multiorbital systems by applying it to both the three-orbital degenerate Hubbard model and a realistic Sr2RuO4 model extracted from first principle simulations, and comparing the results to those obtained using the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Our findings indicate that g-RISB's accuracy can be systematically improved toward the exact DMFT limit in infinite dimensional multiorbital models by increasing the number of ghost orbitals. This allows for a more precise description of aspects of Hund metal physics and Mott physics compared to the original RISB approach. We also demonstrate that g-RISB reliably captures the quasiparticle weights, Fermi surface, and low-energy spectral function for the realistic Sr2RuO4 model compared to DMFT. Moreover, we showcase the potential of using the density matrix renormalization group method as an impurity solver within the g-RISB framework to study systems with a larger number of ghost orbitals. These results show the potential of g-RISB as a reliable tool for simulating correlated materials. The connection between the g-RISB and DMFT self-energy is also discussed.

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. This is below the critical threshold, suggesting that Alfv\'en waves are an important driver of coronal heating., Comment: 1,002 authors, 14 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, published by The Astrophysical Journal on 2023-05-09, volume 948, page 71

We study reductions of the Korteweg--de Vries equation corresponding to stationary equations for symmetries from the noncommutative subalgebra. An equivalent system of $n$ second-order equations is obtained, which reduces to the Painlev\'e equation P$_{34}$ for $n=1$. On the singular line $t=0$, a subclass of special solutions is described by a system of $n-1$ second-order equations, equivalent to the P$_3$ equation for $n=2$. For these systems, we obtain the isomonodromic Lax pairs and B\"acklund transformations which form the group ${\mathbb Z}^n_2\times{\mathbb Z}^n$., Comment: 11 pages

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
We use time-domain simulations of Jupiter observations to test and develop a beam reconstruction pipeline for the Simons Observatory Small Aperture Telescopes. The method relies on a map maker that estimates and subtracts correlated atmospheric noise and a beam fitting code designed to compensate for the bias caused by the map maker. We test our reconstruction performance for four different frequency bands against various algorithmic parameters, atmospheric conditions and input beams. We additionally show the reconstruction quality as function of the number of available observations and investigate how different calibration strategies affect the beam uncertainty. For all of the cases considered, we find good agreement between the fitted results and the input beam model within a ~1.5% error for a multipole range l = 30 - 700 and an ~0.5% error for a multipole range l = 50 - 200. We conclude by using a harmonic-domain component separation algorithm to verify that the beam reconstruction errors and biases observed in our analysis do not significantly bias the Simons Observatory r-measurement., Comment: 23 pages, 21 figures, published in ApJ

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit., Comment: Accepted by PASP for the special issue on The James Webb Space Telescope Overview, 29 pages, 4 figures

We study property testing of properties that are definable in first-order logic (FO) in the bounded-degree graph and relational structure models. We show that any FO property that is defined by a formula with quantifier prefix $\exists^*\forall^*$ is testable (i.e., testable with constant query complexity), while there exists an FO property that is expressible by a formula with quantifier prefix $\forall^*\exists^*$ that is not testable. In the dense graph model, a similar picture is long known (Alon, Fischer, Krivelevich, Szegedy, Combinatorica 2000), despite the very different nature of the two models. In particular, we obtain our lower bound by an FO formula that defines a class of bounded-degree expanders, based on zig-zag products of graphs. We expect this to be of independent interest. We then use our class of FO definable bounded-degree expanders to answer a long-standing open problem for proximity-oblivious testers (POTs). POTs are a class of particularly simple testing algorithms, where a basic test is performed a number of times that may depend on the proximity parameter, but the basic test itself is independent of the proximity parameter. In their seminal work, Goldreich and Ron [STOC 2009; SICOMP 2011] show that the graph properties that are constant-query proximity-oblivious testable in the bounded-degree model are precisely the properties that can be expressed as a generalised subgraph freeness (GSF) property that satisfies the non-propagation condition. It is left open whether the non-propagation condition is necessary. We give a negative answer by showing that our property is a GSF property which is propagating. Hence in particular, our property does not admit a POT. For this result we establish a new connection between FO properties and GSF-local properties via neighbourhood profiles., Comment: Preliminary version of this article appeared in SODA'21 (arXiv:2008.05800) and CCC'21 (arXiv:2105.08490)

This paper extends an a posteriori error estimator for the elastic, Frank-Oseen model of liquid crystals, derived in [9], to include electric and flexoelectric effects. The problem involves a nonlinear coupled system of equations with a local unit-length constraint imposed via a penalty method. The proposed estimator is proven to be a reliable estimate of global approximation error. The performance of the coupled error estimator as a guide for adaptive refinement is shown in the numerical results, where the adapted grids successfully yield substantial reductions in computational work and comparable or better conformance to important physical laws., Comment: 10 Pages, 2 Figures, Conference: LSSC 2023. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1806.06248

It is well known that via the augmented Lagrangian method, one can solve Stokes' system by solving the nearly incompressible linear elasticity equation. In this paper, we show that the converse holds, and approximate the inverse of the linear elasticity operator with a convex linear combination of parameter-free operators. In such a way, we construct a uniform preconditioner for linear elasticity for all values of the Lam\'{e} parameter $\lambda\in [0,\infty)$. Numerical results confirm that by using inf-sup stable finite-element spaces for the solution of Stokes' equations, the proposed preconditioner is robust in $\lambda$.

International benchmarking competitions have become fundamental for the comparative performance assessment of image analysis methods. However, little attention has been given to investigating what can be learnt from these competitions. Do they really generate scientific progress? What are common and successful participation strategies? What makes a solution superior to a competing method? To address this gap in the literature, we performed a multi-center study with all 80 competitions that were conducted in the scope of IEEE ISBI 2021 and MICCAI 2021. Statistical analyses performed based on comprehensive descriptions of the submitted algorithms linked to their rank as well as the underlying participation strategies revealed common characteristics of winning solutions. These typically include the use of multi-task learning (63%) and/or multi-stage pipelines (61%), and a focus on augmentation (100%), image preprocessing (97%), data curation (79%), and postprocessing (66%). The "typical" lead of a winning team is a computer scientist with a doctoral degree, five years of experience in biomedical image analysis, and four years of experience in deep learning. Two core general development strategies stood out for highly-ranked teams: the reflection of the metrics in the method design and the focus on analyzing and handling failure cases. According to the organizers, 43% of the winning algorithms exceeded the state of the art but only 11% completely solved the respective domain problem. The insights of our study could help researchers (1) improve algorithm development strategies when approaching new problems, and (2) focus on open research questions revealed by this work., Comment: accepted to CVPR 2023

Surgical scene understanding is a key prerequisite for contextaware decision support in the operating room. While deep learning-based approaches have already reached or even surpassed human performance in various fields, the task of surgical action recognition remains a major challenge. With this contribution, we are the first to investigate the concept of self-distillation as a means of addressing class imbalance and potential label ambiguity in surgical video analysis. Our proposed method is a heterogeneous ensemble of three models that use Swin Transfomers as backbone and the concepts of self-distillation and multi-task learning as core design choices. According to ablation studies performed with the CholecT45 challenge data via cross-validation, the biggest performance boost is achieved by the usage of soft labels obtained by self-distillation. External validation of our method on an independent test set was achieved by providing a Docker container of our inference model to the challenge organizers. According to their analysis, our method outperforms all other solutions submitted to the latest challenge in the field. Our approach thus shows the potential of self-distillation for becoming an important tool in medical image analysis applications.

Synthetic medical image generation has evolved as a key technique for neural network training and validation. A core challenge, however, remains in the domain gap between simulations and real data. While deep learning-based domain transfer using Cycle Generative Adversarial Networks and similar architectures has led to substantial progress in the field, there are use cases in which state-of-the-art approaches still fail to generate training images that produce convincing results on relevant downstream tasks. Here, we address this issue with a domain transfer approach based on conditional invertible neural networks (cINNs). As a particular advantage, our method inherently guarantees cycle consistency through its invertible architecture, and network training can efficiently be conducted with maximum likelihood training. To showcase our method's generic applicability, we apply it to two spectral imaging modalities at different scales, namely hyperspectral imaging (pixel-level) and photoacoustic tomography (image-level). According to comprehensive experiments, our method enables the generation of realistic spectral data and outperforms the state of the art on two downstream classification tasks (binary and multi-class). cINN-based domain transfer could thus evolve as an important method for realistic synthetic data generation in the field of spectral imaging and beyond.

We report the development of GPT-4, a large-scale, multimodal model which can accept image and text inputs and produce text outputs. While less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, GPT-4 exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks, including passing a simulated bar exam with a score around the top 10% of test takers. GPT-4 is a Transformer-based model pre-trained to predict the next token in a document. The post-training alignment process results in improved performance on measures of factuality and adherence to desired behavior. A core component of this project was developing infrastructure and optimization methods that behave predictably across a wide range of scales. This allowed us to accurately predict some aspects of GPT-4's performance based on models trained with no more than 1/1,000th the compute of GPT-4., Comment: 100 pages; updated authors list; fixed author names and added citation

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We thoroughly analyze the divergences of the irreducible vertex functions occurring in the charge channel of the half-filled Hubbard model in close proximity to the Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT). In particular, by systematically performing dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations on the two-particle level, we determine the location and the number of the vertex divergences across the whole coexistence region adjacent to the first-order metal-to-insulator transition. We find that the lines in the parameter space, along which the vertex divergences occur, display a qualitatively different shape in the coexisting metallic and insulating phase, which is also associated to an abrupt jump of the number of divergences across the MIT. Physically, the systematically larger number of divergences on the insulating side of the transition reflects the sudden suppression of local charge fluctuation at the MIT. Further, a systematic analysis of the results demonstrates that the number of divergence lines increases as a function of the inverse temperature ${\beta\!=\!(k_\mathrm{B} T)^{-1}}$ by approaching the Mott transition in the zero temperature limit. This makes it possible to identify the zero-temperature MIT as an accumulation point of an infinite number of vertex divergence lines, unveiling the highly nonperturbative nature of the underlying transition., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures

Abstract The azimuthal anisotropy of particles associated with jets (jet particles) at midrapidity is measured for the first time in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at s NN $$ \sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV down to transverse momentum (p T) of 0.5 GeV/c and 2 GeV/c, respectively, with ALICE. The results obtained in p-Pb collisions are based on a novel three-particle correlation technique. The azimuthal anisotropy coefficient v 2 in high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions is positive, with a significance reaching 6.8σ at low p T, and its magnitude is smaller than in semicentral Pb-Pb collisions. In contrast to the measurements in Pb-Pb collisions, the v 2 coefficient is also found independent of p T within uncertainties. Comparisons with the inclusive charged-particle v 2 and with AMPT calculations are discussed. The predictions suggest that parton interactions play an important role in generating a non-zero jet-particle v 2 in p-Pb collisions, even though they overestimate the reported measurement. These observations shed new insights on the understanding of the origin of the collective behaviour of jet particles in small systems such as p-Pb collisions, and provide significant stringent new constraints to models.

Abstract The H2B.8 variant has been diverged from other variants by its extended N-terminal region that possesses a conserved domain. We generated transgenic Arabidopsis plants expressing H2B.9 (class I), H2B.5 (class II) and H2B.8 (class III) fused to GFP under the 35 S promoter and studied their nuclear distribution and function. H2B.8-GFP showed peculiar nuclear localization at chromocenters in all cell types examined, while H2B.5-GFP and H2B.9-GFP displayed various patterns often dependent on cell types. H2B variants faithfully assembled onto nucleosomes showing no effect on nuclear organization; H2B.8-GFP appeared as three distinct isoforms in which one isoform appeared to be SUMOylated. Interestingly, transient expression in protoplasts revealed H2B.8 nuclear localization distinct from transgenic plants as it was restricted to the nuclear periphery generating a distinctive ring-like appearance accompanied by nuclear size reduction. This unique appearance was abolished by deletion of the N-terminal conserved domain or when H2B.8-GFP is transiently expressed in ddm1 protoplasts. GFP-TRAP-coupled proteome analysis uncovered H2B.8-partner proteins including H2A.W.12, which characterizes heterochromatin. Thus, our data highlight H2B.8 as a unique variant evolved in angiosperms to control chromatin compaction/aggregation and uncover cis- and trans-regulatory elements underlying its nuclear distribution and function.

Abstract Background Problematic anger, characterized by excessive frequency, intensity, and duration of anger which causes substantial emotional distress and functional interference, poses a marked challenge in military populations. Despite its importance, research on this topic is limited. This study contributes to the literature by exploring problematic anger in a large sample of Norwegian military personnel who served in NATO missions in Afghanistan. Methods All Norwegian military personnel who deployed to Afghanistan between 2001 and 2020 were sent a link to a cross-sectional web-based survey by the Joint Medical Services of the Norwegian Armed Forces in 2020. A total of 6205 individuals (response rate: 67.7%) participated. The cross-sectional survey assessed problematic anger, mental and physical health, war zone stressor exposure, and quality of life. Results Overall, 8.4% of participants reported problematic anger. Mental health disorders, deployment-related shame and guilt, chronic pain, and challenges with the military-to-civilian transition were independently associated with problematic anger. Both staying in service and maintaining a part-time connection with the military as a reservist mitigated the risk of problematic anger after deployment, compared to complete separation from military service. Conclusion Findings demonstrate a sizeable prevalence of problematic anger among veterans of combat deployments. Given the associations between problematic anger and mental health disorders, chronic pain, and transition challenges, interventions designed to mitigate problematic anger need to be multi-faceted, including the possibility of maintaining an ongoing connection to military service. By reducing the risk of problematic anger, occupational, interpersonal and health outcomes may be improved for service members. Future research should examine the impact of problematic anger on adjustment over time, prevention strategies, and problematic anger in other high-risk occupations.
