234. Scattering model of scintillation arcs in pulsar secondary spectra

Abstract

The dynamic spectra of pulsars frequently exhibit diverse interference patterns, often associated with parabolic arcs in the Fourier-transformed (secondary) spectra. Our approach differs from previous ones in two ways: first, we extend beyond the traditional Fresnel-Kirchhoff method by using the Green's function of the Helmholtz equation, i.e.\ we consider spherical waves originating from three dimensional space, not from a two dimensional screen. Secondly, the discrete structures observed in the secondary spectrum result from discrete scatterer configurations, namely plasma concentrations in the interstellar medium, and not from the selection of points by the stationary phase approximation. Through advanced numerical techniques, we model both the dynamic and secondary spectra, providing a comprehensive framework that describes all components of the latter spectra in terms of physical quantities. Abstract

In this work, we demonstrate a C-band shear-horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) resonator with high electromechanical coupling (kt2) of 22% and a quality factor (Q) of 565 based on a thin-film lithium niobate (LN) on silicon carbide (SiC) platform, featuring an excellent figure-of-merit (FoM = kt2*Q ) of 124 at 6.5 GHz, the highest FoM reported in this frequency range. The resonator frequency upscaling is achieved through wavelength ($\lambda$) reduction and the use of thin aluminum (Al) electrodes. The LN/SiC waveguide and synchronous resonator design collectively enable effective acoustic energy confinement for a high FoM, even when the normalized thickness of LN approaches a scale of 0.5$\lambda$ to 1$\lambda$. To perform a comprehensive study, we also designed and fabricated five additional resonators, expending the $\lambda$ studied ranging from 480 to 800 nm, in the same 500 nm-thick transferred Y-cut thin-film LN on SiC. The fabricated SH-SAW resonators, operating from 5 to 8 GHz, experimentally demonstrate a kt2 from 20.3% to 22.9% and a Q from 350 to 575, thereby covering the entire C-band with excellent performance., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Experimental insight into the elementary processes underlying charge transfer across interfaces has blossomed with the wide-spread availability of ultra-high vacuum set-ups that allow the preparation and characterization of solid surfaces with well-defined molecular adsorbates over a wide ranges of temperatures. Thick layers of molecular adsorbates or heterostructures of 2D materials generally preclude the use of electrons or atoms as probes in such characterization. However with linear photon-in/photon-out techniques it is often challenging to assign the observed optical response to a particular portion of the interface. We and prior workers have demonstrated in work under ambient conditions that by full characterization of the symmetry of the second order nonlinear optical susceptibility, i.e. the $\chi^{(2)}$, in sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy, this problem can be overcome. Here we describe an ultra-high vacuum system built to allow conventional UHV sample preparation and characterization, femtosecond and polarization resolved SFG spectroscopy, the azimuthal sample rotation necessary to fully describe $\chi^{(2)}$ symmetry and with sufficient stability to allow scanning SFG microscopy. We demonstrate these capabilities in proof-of-principle measurements on CO adsorbed on Pt(111) and of the clean Ag(111) surface. Because this set-up allows both full characterization of the nonlinear susceptibility and the temperature control and sample preparation/characterization of conventional UHV set-ups we expect it to be of great utility in investigation of both the basic physics and applications of solid, 2D material heterostructures.

Abstract

A pressing question resulting from global warming is how infectious diseases will be affected by climate change. Answering this question requires research into the effects of weather on the population dynamics of transmission and infection; elucidating these effects, however, has proven difficult due to the challenges of assessing causality from the predominantly observational data available in epidemiological research. Here, we show how concepts from causal inference -- the sub-field of statistics aiming at inferring causality from data -- can guide that research. Through a series of case studies, we illustrate how such concepts can help assess study design and strategically choose a study's location, evaluate and reduce the risk of bias, and interpret the multifaceted effects of meteorological variables on transmission. More broadly, we argue that interdisciplinary approaches based on explicit causal frameworks are crucial for reliably estimating the effect of weather and accurately predicting the consequences of climate change.

Abstract

This paper reports the first piezoelectric acoustic filter in periodically poled piezoelectric film (P3F) lithium niobate (LiNbO3) at 23.8 GHz with low insertion loss (IL) of 1.52 dB and 3-dB fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 19.4%. The filter features a compact footprint of 0.64 mm2. The third-order ladder filter is implemented with electrically coupled resonators in 150 nm bi-layer P3F 128 rotated Y-cut LiNbO3 thin film, operating in second-order symmetric (S2) Lamb mode. The record-breaking performance is enabled by the P3F LiNbO3 platform, where piezoelectric thin films of alternating orientations are transferred subsequently, facilitating efficient higher-order Lamb mode operation with simultaneously high quality factor (Q) and coupling coefficient (k2) at millimeter-wave (mmWave). Also, the multi-layer P3F stack promises smaller footprints and better nonlinearity than single-layer counterparts, thanks to the higher capacitance density and lower thermal resistance. Abstract

In this work, we investigate the frequency scaling of shear-horizontal (S.H.) surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators based on a lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) substrate into the centimeter bands for 6G wireless systems. Prototyped resonators with wavelengths ranging between 240 nm and 400 nm were fabricated, and the experimental results exhibit a successful frequency scaling between 9.05 and 13.37 GHz. However, a noticeable performance degradation can be observed as the resonance frequency (fs) scales. Such an effect is expected to be caused by non-ideal helec/{\lambda} for smaller {\lambda} devices. The optimized LNOI SH-SAW with a {\lambda} of 400 nm exhibits a fs of 9.05 GHz, a keff2 of 15%, Qmax of 213 and a FoM of 32, which indicates a successful implementation for device targeting centimeter bands., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, submitted to IEEE IC-MAM 2024

240. Amplifying Exploration in Monte-Carlo Tree Search by Focusing on the Unknown

Abstract

Monte-Carlo tree search (MCTS) is an effective anytime algorithm with a vast amount of applications. It strategically allocates computational resources to focus on promising segments of the search tree, making it a very attractive search algorithm in large search spaces. However, it often expends its limited resources on reevaluating previously explored regions when they remain the most promising path. Our proposed methodology, denoted as AmEx-MCTS, solves this problem by introducing a novel MCTS formulation. Central to AmEx-MCTS is the decoupling of value updates, visit count updates, and the selected path during the tree search, thereby enabling the exclusion of already explored subtrees or leaves. This segregation preserves the utility of visit counts for both exploration-exploitation balancing and quality metrics within MCTS. The resultant augmentation facilitates in a considerably broader search using identical computational resources, preserving the essential characteristics of MCTS. The expanded coverage not only yields more precise estimations but also proves instrumental in larger and more complex problems. Abstract

Daya Bay presents the first measurement of cosmogenic $^8$He isotope production in liquid scintillator, using an innovative method for identifying cascade decays of $^8$He and its child isotope, $^8$Li. We also measure the production yield of $^9$Li isotopes using well-established methodology. The results, in units of 10$^{-8}\mu^{-1}$g$^{-1}$cm$^{2}$, are 0.307$\pm$0.042, 0.341$\pm$0.040, and 0.546$\pm$0.076 for $^8$He, and 6.73$\pm$0.73, 6.75$\pm$0.70, and 13.74$\pm$0.82 for $^9$Li at average muon energies of 63.9~GeV, 64.7~GeV, and 143.0~GeV, respectively. The measured production rate of $^8$He isotopes is more than an order of magnitude lower than any other measurement of cosmogenic isotope production. It replaces the results of previous attempts to determine the ratio of $^8$He to $^9$Li production that yielded a wide range of limits from 0 to 30\%. The results provide future liquid-scintillator-based experiments with improved ability to predict cosmogenic backgrounds.

Abstract

A coding scheme with scalar lattices is applied to K-receiver, Gaussian, vector broadcast channels with K independent messages, one for each receiver. The method decomposes each receiver channel into parallel scalar channels with known interference and applies dirty paper coding with a modulo interval, amplitude shift keying (ASK), and probabilistic shaping to each scalar channel. The achievable rate tuples include all points inside the capacity region by choosing truncated Gaussian shaping, large ASK alphabets, and large modulo intervals.

Abstract

Hyperactive comet activity typically becomes evident beyond the frost line (3 to 4 au) where it becomes too cold for water-ice to sublimate. If carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are the species that drive activity at sufficiently large distances, then detailed studies on the production rates of these species are extremely valuable to examine the formation of the solar system because these two species (beyond water) are next culpable for driving cometary activity. The NEOWISE reactivated mission operates at two imaging bandpasses, W1 and W2 at 3.4 and 4.6 microns, respectively, with the W2 channel being fully capable of detecting CO and CO2 at 4.67 and 4.23 microns in the same bandpass. It is extremely difficult to study CO2 from the ground due to contamination in Earth's atmosphere. We present our W1 and W2 photometry, dust measurements, and findings for comets C/2014 B1 (Schwartz), C/2017 K2 (Pan-STARRS), and C/2010 U3 (Boattini), hereafter, B1, K2, and U3, respectively. Our results assess CO and CO2 gas production rates observed by NEOWISE. We have determined: (1) comets B1 and K2 have CO2 and CO gas production rates of 1e27 and 1e29 molecules per second, respectively, if one assumes the excess emission is attributed to either all CO or all CO2; (2) B1 and K2 are considered hyperactive in that their measured AfRho dust production values are on the order of greater than or equal to 1e3 cm; and (3) the CO and CO2 production rates do not always follow the expected convention of increasing with decreased heliocentric distance, while B1 and K2 exhibit noticeable dust activity on their inbound leg orbits.

Abstract

Doping of liquid argon TPCs (LArTPCs) with a small concentration of xenon is a technique for light-shifting and facilitates the detection of the liquid argon scintillation light. In this paper, we present the results of the first doping test ever performed in a kiloton-scale LArTPC. From February to May 2020, we carried out this special run in the single-phase DUNE Far Detector prototype (ProtoDUNE-SP) at CERN, featuring 720 t of total liquid argon mass with 410 t of fiducial mass. A 5.4 ppm nitrogen contamination was present during the xenon doping campaign. The goal of the run was to measure the light and charge response of the detector to the addition of xenon, up to a concentration of 18.8 ppm. The main purpose was to test the possibility for reduction of non-uniformities in light collection, caused by deployment of photon detectors only within the anode planes. Light collection was analysed as a function of the xenon concentration, by using the pre-existing photon detection system (PDS) of ProtoDUNE-SP and an additional smaller set-up installed specifically for this run. In this paper we first summarize our current understanding of the argon-xenon energy transfer process and the impact of the presence of nitrogen in argon with and without xenon dopant. We then describe the key elements of ProtoDUNE-SP and the injection method deployed. Two dedicated photon detectors were able to collect the light produced by xenon and the total light. The ratio of these components was measured to be about 0.65 as 18.8 ppm of xenon were injected. We performed studies of the collection efficiency as a function of the distance between tracks and light detectors, demonstrating enhanced uniformity of response for the anode-mounted PDS. We also show that xenon doping can substantially recover light losses due to contamination of the liquid argon by nitrogen., Comment: 36 pages, 20 figures. Vertebral morphological measurements are important across various disciplines, including spinal biomechanics and clinical applications, pre- and post-operatively. These measurements also play a crucial role in anthropological longitudinal studies, where spinal metrics are repeatedly documented over extended periods. Traditionally, such measurements have been manually conducted, a process that is time-consuming. In this study, we introduce a novel, fully automated method for measuring vertebral morphology using 3D meshes of lumbar and thoracic spine models.Our experimental results demonstrate the method's capability to accurately measure low-resolution patient-specific vertebral meshes with mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.09 mm and those derived from artificially created lumbar spines, where the average MAE value was 0.7 mm. Our qualitative analysis indicates that measurements obtained using our method on 3D spine models can be accurately reprojected back onto the original medical images if these images are available.

Abstract

A multi-input multi-output (MIMO) Gaussian channel with two transmit antennas and two receive antennas is studied that is subject to an input peak-power constraint. The capacity and the capacity-achieving input distribution are unknown in general. The problem is shown to be equivalent to a channel with an identity matrix but where the input lies inside and on an ellipse with principal axis length $r_p$ and minor axis length $r_m$. If $r_p \le \sqrt{2}$, then the capacity-achieving input has support on the ellipse. A sufficient condition is derived under which a two-point distribution is optimal. Abstract

Spatial variations in the cosmic electron density after reionization generate cosmic microwave background anisotropies via Thomson scattering, a process known as the ``patchy screening" effect. In this paper, we propose a new estimator for the patchy screening effect that is designed to mitigate biases from the dominant foreground signals. We use it to measure the cross-correlation between \textit{unWISE} galaxies and patchy screening, the latter measured by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and \textit{Planck} satellite. We report the first detection of the patchy screening effect, with the statistical significance of the cross-correlation exceeding $7\sigma$. This measurement directly probes the distribution of electrons around these galaxies and provides strong evidence that gas is more extended than the underlying dark matter. By comparing our measurements to electron profiles extracted from simulations, we demonstrate the power of these observations to constrain galaxy evolution models. Abstract

The shape and polarisation properties of the radio pulse profiles of radio-loud magnetars provide a unique opportunity to investigate their magnetospheric properties. Gaussian Process Regression analysis was used to investigate the variation in the total intensity shape of the radio pulse profiles of the magnetar Swift J1818.0-1607. The observed profile shape was found to evolve through three modes between MJDs 59104 and 59365. The times at which these transitions occurred coincided with changes in the amplitude of modulations in the spin-down rate. The amount of linear and circular polarisation was also found to vary significantly with time. Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis of the spin-down rate revealed three possibly harmonically related frequencies. This could point to the magnetar experiencing seismic activity. However, no profile features exhibited significant periodicity, suggesting no simple correlations between the profile variability and fluctuations of the spin-down on shorter timescales within the modes. Overall, this implies the mode changes seen are a result of local magnetospheric changes, with other theories, such as precession, less able to explain these observations., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Hamiltonian Operator Inference has been introduced in [Sharma, H., Wang, Z., Kramer, B., Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena, 431, p.133122, 2022] to learn structure-preserving reduced-order models (ROMs) for Hamiltonian systems. This approach constructs a low-dimensional model using only data and knowledge of the Hamiltonian function. Such ROMs can keep the intrinsic structure of the system, allowing them to capture the physics described by the governing equations. In this work, we extend this approach to more general systems that are either conservative or dissipative in energy, and which possess a gradient structure. We derive the optimization problems for inferring structure-preserving ROMs that preserve the gradient structure. We further derive an $a\ priori$ error estimate for the reduced-order approximation. To test the algorithms, we consider semi-discretized partial differential equations with gradient structure, such as the parameterized wave and Korteweg-de-Vries equations, and equations of three-dimensional linear elasticity in the conservative case and the one- and two-dimensional Allen-Cahn equations in the dissipative case. Abstract

This paper presents a structure-preserving Bayesian approach for learning nonseparable Hamiltonian systems using stochastic dynamic models allowing for statistically-dependent, vector-valued additive and multiplicative measurement noise. The approach is comprised of three main facets. First, we derive a Gaussian filter for a statistically-dependent, vector-valued, additive and multiplicative noise model that is needed to evaluate the likelihood within the Bayesian posterior. Second, we develop a novel algorithm for cost-effective application of Bayesian system identification to high-dimensional systems. Third, we demonstrate how structure-preserving methods can be incorporated into the proposed framework, using nonseparable Hamiltonians as an illustrative system class. We assess the method's performance based on the forecasting accuracy of a model estimated from single-trajectory data. We compare the Bayesian method to a state-of-the-art machine learning method on a canonical nonseparable Hamiltonian model and a chaotic double pendulum model with small, noisy training datasets. The results show that using the Bayesian posterior as a training objective can yield upwards of 724 times improvement in Hamiltonian mean squared error using training data with up to 10% multiplicative noise compared to a standard training objective. Lastly, we demonstrate the utility of the novel algorithm for parameter estimation of a 64-dimensional model of the spatially-discretized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with data corrupted by up to 20% multiplicative noise.
