Robust devices for chronic neural stimulation demand electrode materials which exhibit high charge injection (Qinj) capacity and long-term stability. Boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes have shown promise for neural stimulation applications, but their practical applications remain limited due to the poor charge transfer capability of diamond. In this work, we present an attractive approach to produce BDD electrodes with exceptionally high surface area using porous titanium nitride (TiN) as interlayer template. The TiN deposition parameters were systematically varied to fabricate a range of porous electrodes, which were subsequently coated by a BDD thin-film. The electrodes were investigated by surface analysis methods and electrochemical techniques before and after BDD deposition. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements showed a wide potential window in saline solution (between −1.3 and 1.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl). Electrodes with the highest thickness and porosity exhibited the lowest impedance magnitude and a charge storage capacity (CSC) of 253 mC/cm2, which largely exceeds the values previously reported for porous BDD electrodes. Electrodes with relatively thinner and less porous coatings displayed the highest pulsing capacitances (Cpulse), which would be more favorable for stimulation applications. Although BDD/TiN electrodes displayed a higher impedance magnitude and a lower Cpulse as compared to the bare TiN electrodes, the wider potential window likely allows for higher Qinj without reaching unsafe potentials. The remarkable reduction in the impedance and improvement in the charge transfer capacity, together with the known properties of BDD films, makes this type of coating as an ideal candidate for development of reliable devices for chronic neural interfacing.

- Abstract
In this paper, we present the results of an experimental sequence of classroom activities on geometric transformations, proposed to high-school students. The activity is based on the use of a dynamic geometry system. Planned by a group of four people, two university professors and two research teachers, the activity has been elaborated together with 16 teachers who experimented in their own classrooms. The results of the classroom activities have been obtained by analysing teachers' log books and questionnaires submitted to the teachers and the students.

225. Negotiating to Engagement: Creating an Art Curriculum with Eighth-Graders
- Author

Pennisi, Alice C.
- Abstract
With the goal of re-engaging students in their art class, a participatory action research project was conducted in which an art teacher, his eighth-graders, and the researcher as mentor-teacher used democratic practices to negotiate the structure and content of their class over a school year. Starting with an agreed upon concept of art, pedagogical strategies were developed that moved the class from teacher-centered to idea-centered. These strategies included elevating student perspectives, minimizing teacher talk with active listening techniques, and expanding "working in art class" to include idea-development practices.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of feeding olive cake and linseed to lambs on the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in raw and cooked meat. Four groups of eight male Appenninica lambs each were fed: conventional cereal-based concentrates (diet C), concentrates containing 20% on a dry matter (DM) basis of rolled linseed (diet L), concentrates containing 35% DM of stoned olive cake (diet OC), or concentrates containing both rolled linseed (10% DM) and stoned olive cake (17% DM; diet OCL). The longissimus dorsi muscle of each lamb was sampled at slaughter and was subjected to VOC profiling through the use of SPME-GC-MS. In the raw meat, the concentration of 3-methylpentanoic acid was higher in treatment C as compared with treatments L, OC and OCL (P

- Abstract
ObjectiveHyperferritinaemia is associated with liver fibrosis severity in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), but the longitudinal implications have not been thoroughly investigated. We assessed the role of serum ferritin in predicting long-term outcomes or death.DesignWe evaluated the relationship between baseline serum ferritin and longitudinal events in a multicentre cohort of 1342 patients. Four survival models considering ferritin with confounders or non-invasive scoring systems were applied with repeated five-fold cross-validation schema. Prediction performance was evaluated in terms of Harrell’s C-index and its improvement by including ferritin as a covariate.ResultsMedian follow-up time was 96 months. Liver-related events occurred in 7.7%, hepatocellular carcinoma in 1.9%, cardiovascular events in 10.9%, extrahepatic cancers in 8.3% and all-cause mortality in 5.8%. Hyperferritinaemia was associated with a 50% increased risk of liver-related events and 27% of all-cause mortality. A stepwise increase in baseline ferritin thresholds was associated with a statistical increase in C-index, ranging between 0.02 (lasso-penalised Cox regression) and 0.03 (ridge-penalised Cox regression); the risk of developing liver-related events mainly increased from threshold 215.5 µg/L (median HR=1.71 and C-index=0.71) and the risk of overall mortality from threshold 272 µg/L (median HR=1.49 and C-index=0.70). The inclusion of serum ferritin thresholds (215.5 µg/L and 272 µg/L) in predictive models increased the performance of Fibrosis-4 and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Fibrosis Score in the longitudinal risk assessment of liver-related events (C-indices>0.71) and overall mortality (C-indices>0.65).ConclusionsThis study supports the potential use of serum ferritin values for predicting the long-term prognosis of patients with MASLD.

239. Analogy and Dynamic Geometry System Used to Introduce Three-Dimensional Geometry
- Author
-
Mammana, M. F., Micale, B., and Pennisi, M.
- Abstract
We present a sequence of classroom activities on Euclidean geometry, both plane and space geometry, used to make three dimensional geometry more catchy and simple. The activity consists of a guided research activity that leads the students to discover unexpected properties of two apparently distant geometrical entities, quadrilaterals and tetrahedra. The activity has been realised by means of an efficacious conceptual tool, the "analogy", and an operative one, a "dynamic geometry system". (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)

240. Experiencing the Impact of Organizational Structure on Planning and Visioning Tasks
- Author
-
Pennisi, Lisa
- Abstract
The various ways natural resource agencies and programs are structured and how that impacts leadership style and products is an important concept for students to understand. Leadership style and organizational structure determine visions, missions, goals and objectives that set the tone for organizations. This exercise demonstrates organizational structure and the impact of leadership style by having students work collaboratively to write a mission statement, goals and objectives within the confines of assigned structures. The class was divided into organizations with different structures by using role cards. The groups had contrasting experiences resulting in dissimilar products. The partnership group for example, was very collaborative and had a comprehensive, well-planned product as a result of shared input. The students deemed the activity as an engaging, helpful and fun way to experience and learn about the implications of organizational structure; while writing the mission, goals and objectives helped students learn the concepts. 241. A Partnership across Boundaries: Arts Integration in High Schools
- Author
-
Pennisi, Alice C.
- Abstract
In this article, the author talks about innovative high school curricula that engage students through the study of visual art in conjunction with critical study of history and social movements. Just as historians place a premium on locating and interpreting events in time, the visual arts are centered on getting an idea across in a visual form, which can lead to rich cross-disciplinary understandings. Still, historians strive for accuracy of information, while the arts often emphasize ambiguity and multiple meanings, which can lead to contradictions. This article is guided by how well-designed arts integrated curricula can help young people to combine such distinctive forms of literacy to create meanings in the classroom and of the world, particularly those that help students "identify and challenge social constructs, underlying assumptions, and ideologies". As an art educator, the author shares Paul Duncum's interest in "the making of meaning through the interaction of different communicative modes" and how art curricula can encourage that play across boundaries, for meaning is created not through transfer, but in relation. 242. School Grading and Institutional Contexts
- Author

- Abstract
We study how the relationship between students' cognitive ability and their school grades depends on institutional contexts. In a simple abstract model, we show that unless competence standards are set at above-school level or the variation of competence across schools is low, students' competence valuation will be heterogeneous, with weaker schools inflating grades or flattening their dependence on competence, therefore reducing the information content and comparability of school grades. Using data from the OECD-PISA 2003 Survey, the model is applied to a sample of four countries, namely Australia, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. We find that in Australia, schools' heterogeneity does not affect grading practices; in the other countries, grades are inflated in weaker schools, uniformly in Germany and the Netherlands, to a larger extent for weaker students in Italy. Barrett, Jeffrey E., Clements, Douglas H., Klanderman, David, Pennisi, Sarah-Jean, and Polaki, Mokaeane V.
- Abstract
This article examines students' development of levels of understanding for measurement by describing the coordination of geometric reasoning with measurement and numerical strategies. In analyzing the reasoning and argumentation of 38 Grade 2 through Grade 10 students on linear measure tasks, we found support for the application and elaboration of our previously established categorization of children's length measurement levels: (1) guessing of length values by naive visual observation, (2) making inconsistent, uncoordinated reference to markers as units, and (3) using consistent and coordinated identification of units. We elaborated two of these categories. Observations supported sublevel distinctions between inconsistent identification (2a) and consistent yet only partially coordinated identification of units (2b). Evidence also supported a distinction between static (3a) and dynamic (3b) ways of coordinating length; we distinguish "integrated abstraction" (3b) from "nonintegrated abstraction" (3a) by examining whether students coordinate number and space schemes across multiple cases, or merely associate cases without coordinating schemes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of stoned olive cake and rolled linseed in a concentrate-based diet for lambs on the fatty-acid composition of polar and non-polar intramuscular lipids of the longissimus dorsi muscle. To achieve this objective, 32 Appenninica lambs were randomly distributed into four groups of eight lambs each and were fed conventional cereal-based concentrates (diet C); concentrates containing 20% on a dry matter (DM) basis of rolled linseed (diet L); concentrates containing 35% DM of stoned olive cake (diet OC); and concentrates containing both rolled linseed (10% DM) and stoned olive cake (17% DM; diet OCL). The concentrates were administered together with grass hay at a 20:80 forage:concentrate ratio. Growing performances and carcass traits were evaluated. The fatty-acid composition was analysed in the total intramuscular lipids, as well as in the polar and neutral lipids. The average feed intake and the growth performance of lambs were not affected by the dietary treatments, as a consequence of similar nutritional characteristics of the diets. The inclusion of rolled linseed in the L and OCL diets increased the content of C18:3 n-3 in intramuscular total lipids, which was threefold higher in meat from the L lambs and more than twofold higher in meat from the OCL lambs compared with the C and OC treatments. The n-6:n-3 ratio significantly decreased in the meat from lambs in the L and OCL groups, reaching values below 3. The L treatment resulted in the highest level of trans-18:1 fatty acids in the muscle. Regardless of the dietary treatment, the t10-18:1 was the major isomer, representing 55%, 45%, 49% and 45% of total trans-18:1 for C, L, OC and OCL treatments, respectively. Neutral lipids from the OC-fed lambs contained the highest amount of c9-18:1 (more than 36% of total fatty acids); however, the content of c9-18:1 did not differ between the OC and C lambs, suggesting an intensive biohydrogenation of dietary c9-18:1 in the case of OC treatment. The highest content of c9,t11-18:2 was detected in the intramuscular fat from the L-fed lambs, followed by the OCL treatment. A similar trend was observed in the neutral lipid fraction and, to a lower extent, in the polar lipids.

- Abstract
In this article quadrilaterals with concurrent maltitudes are characterized. A generalization of the maltitudes is given, and a larger family of quadrilaterals for which an analogous property of concurrency holds is determined and studied.
