In 1906, Eitner 1 observed that the serum of a leper yielded a positive complement-fixation reaction with an extract of a leprous nodule. Two years later, 2 he observed similar results with the serum of a second leper, and in addition he noted the occurrence of a positive Wassermann reaction employing an alcoholic extract of guinea-pig heart as antigen. These observations have stimulated a large number of investigations on the subject of complement fixation in leprosy, employing not only the antigens commonly used in the Wassermann reaction, but also extracts of leprous tissues and of various acid-fast bacilli, tuberculin, etc. One result of these investigations has been to spread the impression that in leprosy the Wassermann reaction may be positive in the absence of syphilis, as shown in the following brief review of the literature on the Wassermann reaction in this disease. In the course of a number of years during which many cases of leprosy have been observed, the general impression has grown that certain anatomic regions are exempt from leprous lesions. To determine the extent to which this general impression was correct, a survey of all the patients at the National Leprosarium was undertaken, and each of the regions presupposed to show some degree of immunity was examined. In general, the surfaces of the skin investigated were those in which on account of the anatomic conformation some degree of protection is afforded from exposure to such irritants as sunlight, heat, cold, pressure or other causes tending to produce local hyperemia or erythema. The impression prevailing before the survey was made was that the circinate lesions of maculo-anesthetic or nerve leprosy would not be found to conform in distribution with those of the skin type. Thirty-four years ago, the state of Louisiana established a home for lepers and maintained it until Jan. 3, 1921, when it was purchased by the federal government and its operation assumed as a national leprosarium. The records of these two institutions furnish the data from which this paper has been written. Since Dec. 1, 1894, 718 lepers have been admitted (chart 1). Of these, 215 were foreign born (table 1), representing instances in which lepers were admitted to the United States in the incubation, latent or otherwise undiagnosable stages of leprosy. Admissions of native born have numbered 504, with a geographic distribution including all the states of the union except eleven. In table 2 is given the number of cases from each state. This table cannot be taken as a comparative index of the incidence of leprosy in the states because some states have, to a greater extent than others

After an absence of four months, cholera appeared in the city of Manila in July, 1914. The present epidemic, in which there were reported more than 1,100 cases, suspects and "carriers," did not differ greatly from the ordinary small epidemic. All patients, excepting those who died without medical attention, were treated at San Lazaro Hospital. Of the number mentioned, 330 were genuine cases of cholera, 170 not cholera, and 570 were carriers, so-called; 99 were found dead and sent to San Lazaro morgue for confirmation of diagnosis. The total number of deaths with and without medical attention was 190. The percentage of recoveries among those receiving medical attention at San Lazaro was 72.5. When a patient is admitted to the hospital, a stool specimen is at once taken and sent to the Bureau of Science for bacteriologic examination, and no patient is discharged until at least two successive stool specimens
