Abstract

Objectives People with schizophrenia (SCZ) present serious and generalised deficits in social cognition (SC), which affect negatively patients' functioning and treatment outcomes. The genetic background of SC has been investigated in disorders other than SCZ providing weak and sparse results. Thus, our aim was to explore possible genetic correlates of SC dysfunctions in SCZ patients with a genome-wide study (GWAS) approach. Methods We performed a GWAS meta-analysis of data coming from two cohorts made of 242 and 160 SCZ patients, respectively. SC was assessed with different tools in order to cover its different domains. Results We found GWAS significant association between the TMEM74 gene and the patients' ability in social inference as assessed by The Awareness of Social Inference Test; this association was confirmed by both SNP-based analysis (lead SNP rs3019332 p-value = 5.24 × 10-9) and gene-based analysis (p-value = 1.09 × 10-7). Moreover, suggestive associations of other genes with different dimensions of SC were also found. Conclusions Our study shows for the first time GWAS significant or suggestive associations of some gene variants with SC domains in people with SCZ. These findings should stimulate further studies to characterise the genetic underpinning of SC dysfunctions in SCZ.

Abstract

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a disruption of surgical care. The aim of this multi-centric, retrospective study was to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on surgical activity for thyroid disease among the Italian Units of Endocrine Surgery. Three phases of the pandemic were identified based on the epidemiological situation and the public measures adopted from the Italian Government (1st phase: from 9th March to 3rd May 2020; 2nd phase: from 4th May to 14th June; 3rd phase: from 15th June to 31st). The patients operated upon during these phases were compared to those who underwent surgery during the same period of the previous year. Overall, 3892 patients from 28 Italian endocrine surgical units were included in the study, 1478 (38%) operated upon during COVID-19 pandemic, and 2414 (62%) during the corresponding period of 2019. The decrease in the number of operations was by 64.8%, 44.7% and 5.1% during the three phases of COVID-19 pandemic, compared to 2019, respectively. During the first and the second phases, the surgical activity was dedicated mainly to oncological patients. No differences in post-operative complications were noted between the two periods. Oncological activity for thyroid cancer was adequately maintained during the COVID-19 pandemic.

206. Urban habitat complexity affects species richness but not environmental filtering of morphologically-diverse ants

Abstract

Habitat complexity is a major determinant of structure and diversity of ant assemblages. Following the size-grain hypothesis, smaller ant species are likely to be advantaged in more complex habitats compared to larger species. Habitat complexity can act as an environmental filter based on species size and morphological traits, therefore affecting the overall structure and diversity of ant assemblages. In natural and semi-natural ecosystems, habitat complexity is principally regulated by ecological successions or disturbance such as fire and grazing. Urban ecosystems provide an opportunity to test relationships between habitat, ant assemblage structure and ant traits using novel combinations of habitat complexity generated and sustained by human management. We sampled ant assemblages in low-complexity and high-complexity parks, and high-complexity woodland remnants, hypothesizing that (i) ant abundance and species richness would be higher in high-complexity urban habitats, (ii) ant assemblages would differ between low- and high-complexity habitats and (iii) ants living in high-complexity habitats would be smaller than those living in low-complexity habitats. Contrary to our hypothesis, ant species richness was higher in low-complexity habitats compared to high-complexity habitats. Overall, ant assemblages were significantly different among the habitat complexity types investigated, although ant size and morphology remained the same. Habitat complexity appears to affect the structure of ant assemblages in urban ecosystems as previously observed in natural and semi-natural ecosystems. However, the habitat complexity filter does not seem to be linked to ant morphological traits related to body size.

207. Urban forest cover and ecosystem service response to fire varies across California communities.

Abstract

Urban fires that result from wildfires are an emerging, extreme event affecting communities and urban forests globally. However, much of the fire effects on urban ecosystems literature is primarily focused on Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas, correlates of building loss, risk mitigation, and wildland vegetation and fuels. Three recent urban fires in California USA provided an opportunity to explore these effects on urban forests: the 2017 Tubbs (Santa Rosa) and Thomas (Ventura) fires and the 2018 Camp fire that burned Paradise. Accordingly, we analyzed pre- and post-fire neighborhood level urban tree cover (nUTC) change over 5 years using Sentinel and LiDAR data (10 m resolution). Then, we explored the effects of fire severity on changes in several regulating ecosystem services (e.g., carbon, air pollution, stormwater). Findings from the Rapid Assessment of Vegetation Condition after Wildfire severity processes and other geospatial datasets show that fire effects were patchy with fire severity within neighborhoods ranging from unburned to extreme. We found that ∼5 years after the fires, and relative to adjacent non-fire affected neighborhoods, Ventura and Santa Rosa's nUTC is recovering to pre-fire levels while Paradise's nUTC is being consistently lost over time. Ventura and Santa Rosa had 20–25 % of their fire affected area outside established WUI boundaries. However, local-scale urban tree cover and ecosystem service supply are lagged, and recovery time depends on the surrounding biome and socio-ecological context. In inland, higher elevation communities – like Paradise – the recovery of nUTC and the associated ecosystem services might materialize over a much longer timeframe. Our study provides a roadmap to assess the response of urban wildfire-affected tree cover and ecosystem services across space and time. It is also one of the first assessments of fire effects on urban ecosystems and communities outside of WUI boundaries that are now experiencing increased threat from wildfires globally. • Explored effects of Tubbs, Thomas, Camp fires on 3 California urban forests. • Geospatially analyzed pre- and post-fire tree cover and ecosystem service change. • Ventura, Santa Rosa's tree cover recovered to pre-fire level, Paradise's declining. • Ventura and Santa Rosa had 20–25 % of fire affected area outside WUI. • Ecosystem services recovery lagged, depends on biome and socio-ecological context. 208. Climate change threatens carbon storage in Europe's urban trees.

Abstract

Urban trees contribute substantially to numerous ecosystem services. Here we quantify the threat to carbon stored by urban trees from increased heat and drought arising from climate change. We use data from tree inventories in 22 European cities, spread across five Köppen-Geiger climatic zones, that record ∼1.2 million trees from 188 species. We calculate species' climatic niches using global tree distribution data and estimate species-specific thermal and hydraulic safety gaps and margins for each city in 2050 and 2070 using the RCP 8.5 emissions scenario. This scenario provides the best match for emissions to at least 2050 under current and stated policy plans, and highly plausible emission levels to 2100. We then assess the proportion of current carbon storage at risk from changes in temperature (associated with thermal stress) and precipitation changes (associated with hydraulic stress). By 2070 a substantial amount of the current carbon storage in urban trees is projected to be threatened by climatic stress. Average values (depending on the precise methods used for calculating climatic niches) are: 99.96 % - 99.98 % in the cold semi-arid climate zone; 82.97 % - 92.61 % in the humid subtropical zone, 69.72 % - 72.00 % in the warm Mediterranean zone, 44.18 % - 55.06 % in the humid continental zone and 29.60 % - 43.22 % in the temperate oceanic zone – although within each climatic zone risks are lower in some cities. In each climatic zone the vast majority of this threat is associated with thermal stress, with precipitation changes projected to be a comparatively minor threat. Our analyses highlight individual species which are particularly vulnerable to future climatic conditions, and more resilient species that if rapidly planted on mass could improve resilience of urban tree stocks to climate change. Our findings inform the development of climate-ready urban forestry and planning strategies that will facilitate long term carbon storage capacity of Europe's urban forests, and emphasise the urgency of doing so. • We calculate climate niches of ∼ 200 tree species recorded in 22 European cities. • We predict thermal and hydraulic safety gaps/margins in 2050 & 2070 for each species/city. • By 2070 many species will experience climates outside their current niches. • Carbon storage, and other services, are threatened across European cities. • Urgent mitigation is needed to increase climate change resilience of urban forests. Abstract

Background Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs), although conceptualized as separate entities, may share some clinical and neurobiological features. ASD symptoms may have a relevant role in determining a more severe clinical presentation of schizophrenic disorder but their relationships with cognitive aspects and functional outcomes of the disease remain to be addressed in large samples of individuals. Aims To investigate the clinical, cognitive, and functional correlates of ASD symptoms in a large sample of people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Methods The severity of ASD symptoms was measured with the PANSS Autism Severity Scale (PAUSS) in 921 individuals recruited for the Italian Network for Research on Psychoses multicenter study. Based on the PAUSS scores, three groups of subjects were compared on a wide array of cognitive and functional measures. Results Subjects with more severe ASD symptoms showed a poorer performance in the processing speed (p = 0.010), attention (p = 0.011), verbal memory (p = 0.035), and social cognition (p = 0.001) domains, and an overall lower global cognitive composite score (p = 0.010). Subjects with more severe ASD symptoms also showed poorer functional capacity (p = 0.004), real-world interpersonal relationships (p p Conclusions These findings strengthen the notion that ASD symptoms may have a relevant impact on different aspects of the disease, crucial to the life of people with schizophrenia. Prominent ASD symptoms may characterize a specific subpopulation of individuals with SSD.

Several disorders, such as renal colics, stroke, atrial fibrillation and others, are epidemiologically associated with seasonality and microclimatic variations. Although evidence is still limited, an association between psychiatric emergencies and seasonality has also been previously described. In order to elucidate the possible association between weather and incidence of psychiatric emergencies in a country with temperate climate, we analyzed the influence of day by day climate changes on the number of visits for psychiatric emergencies in an urban emergency department (ED) of northern Italy. All ED visits for psychiatric emergencies were retrieved from the hospital database from 2002 to 2010. The total number of ED visits was 725,812 throughout the study period, 11,786 of which for emergency psychiatric problems. We found a strong seasonal distribution of emergency psychiatric visits, peaking in summer and at the beginning of spring. Abstract

Importance: The goal of schizophrenia treatment has shifted from symptom reduction and relapse prevention to functional recovery; however, recovery rates remain low. Prospective identification of variables associated with real-life functioning domains is essential for personalized and integrated treatment programs. Objective: To assess whether baseline illness-related variables, personal resources, and context-related factors are associated with work skills, interpersonal relationships, and everyday life skills at 4-year follow-up. Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted across 24 Italian university psychiatric clinics or mental health departments in which 921 patients enrolled in a cross-sectional study were contacted after 4 years for reassessment. Recruitment of community-dwelling, clinically stable persons with schizophrenia was conducted from March 2016 to December 2017, and data were analyzed from January to May 2020. Main Outcomes and Measures: Psychopathology, social and nonsocial cognition, functional capacity, personal resources, and context-related factors were assessed, with real-life functioning as the main outcome. Structural equation modeling, multiple regression analyses, and latent change score modeling were used to identify variables that were associated with real-life functioning domains at follow-up and with changes from baseline in these domains. Results: In total, 618 participants (427 male [69.1%]; mean [SD] age, 45.1 [10.5] years) were included. Abstract

First generation antipsychotics (FGAs) are more likely to induce extrapyramidal side-effects (EPS) than second generation antipsychotics (SGAs), and EPS have been shown associated to cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. So far, no study has explored the relationships between EPS and social cognition (SC) in people with schizophrenia. Therefore, we assessed the prevalence of EPS in a large sample of drug-treated community-dwelling persons with schizophrenia and explored their relationships with patients' neurocognitive and SC abilities. 875 patients underwent EPS, psychopathological, neurocognitive and SC assessments by means of standardized measures. Relationships between EPS, psychopathology and neurocognitive and SC measures were investigated by correlation tests. Moreover, a partial correlation network was computed by means of a network analysis. 256 patients were treated with FGAs alone or in combination with SGA and 619 with SGAs. EPS were significantly more frequent in FGA-treated group than in the SGA-treated one. Patients with EPS disclosed a more severe psychopathology and were more impaired in neurocognitive and SC measures compared to those without EPS. Disorganization, expressive deficit, and duration of illness were significantly associated to both neurocognitive and SC measures while EPS were associated to neurocognitive measures only. The network analysis showed that parkinsonism was the sole EPS directly connected to both psychopathological and neurocognitive indices whereas no direct connection emerged between EPS and SC measures. Present findings confirm that EPS are still present in the era of SGAs and contribute, together with other clinical variables, to the neurocognitive but not to the SC impairment of patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract

Background: Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) feel rejected even when socially included. The pathophysiological mechanisms of this rejection bias are still unknown. Using the Cyberball paradigm, we investigated whether patients with BPD, display altered physiological responses to social inclusion and ostracism, as assessed by changes in Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA). Methods: The sample comprised 30 patients with BPD, 30 with remitted Major Depressive Disorder (rMDD) and 30 Healthy Controls (HC). Self-report ratings of threats toward one’s fundamental need to belong and RSA reactivity were measured immediately after each Cyberball condition. Results: Participants with BPD showed lower RSA at rest than HC. Only patients with BPD, reported higher threats to fundamental needs and exhibited a further decline in RSA after the Inclusion condition. Conclusions: Individuals with BPD experience a biased appraisal of social inclusion both at the subjective and physiological level, showing higher feelings of ostracism and a breakdown of autonomic regulation to including social scenarios.

The Washington agreement of last December achieved an important result in one respect: through an adequate realignment of major currencies it corrected the overvaluation of the dollar, thus setting in motion a process of reabsorption of the fundamental disequilibrium between the U.S. and its main trading partners, to be completed in two years or so. Therefore, it has fully succeeded in solving the immediate problems brought to the surface by the May-August exchange crisis. However, no advance has been made, beyond the identification of the main issues, in solving the structural crisis which has plagued the international monetary system since the beginning of the sixties. Urban tree canopy (UTC) cover is rarely distributed equitably across social groups, space, and time. Over the past 20 years, research on the social, spatial, and temporal dynamics of UTC has grown considerably as municipalities adopt ambitious tree canopy cover goals. Yet less is known about how these three dimensions of tree canopy intersect. This paper brings these research areas together by examining i) which sets of social variables--population density, socioeconomic status, or lifestyle--are associated with UTC cover on residential lands, ii) how those relationships vary from front to back yard, and iii) how those relationships are associated with tree canopy cover changes in Baltimore, MD from 2013 to 2018, to more wholistically understand UTC. Socially, population density and social stratification predict tree canopy cover on residential lands, but not as well as lifestyle and life stage factors. More detailed and finer-grain social categories perform best. Spatially, models that explicitly separate front and backyards fit the data better than all-residential statistical models. Ignoring the front yard vs back yard distinction may hinder future theory development, limit the generalizability of empirical research findings, and prevent managers from realizing their canopy goals. Temporally, UTC across residential yards had a positive, though not significant, change likely from the relatively short period (5 y) considered. A fruitful next step could be to model how much planting, maintenance, and loss minimization is needed to achieve the city's 40 % canopy goal with various scenarios for mortality, longevity, and removal over several timesteps. Abstract

Background. Greater levels of insight may be linked with depressive symptoms among patients with schizophrenia, however, it would be useful to characterize this association at symptom-level, in order to inform research on interventions. Methods. Data on depressive symptoms (Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia) and insight (G12 item from the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale) were obtained from 921 community-dwelling, clinically-stable individuals with a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia, recruited in a nationwide multicenter study. Network analysis was used to explore the most relevant connections between insight and depressive symptoms, including potential confounders in the model (neurocognitive and social-cognitive functioning, positive, negative and disorganization symptoms, extrapyramidal symptoms, hostility, internalized stigma, and perceived discrimination). Bayesian network analysis was used to estimate a directed acyclic graph (DAG) while investigating the most likely direction of the putative causal association between insight and depression. Results. After adjusting for confounders, better levels of insight were associated with greater self-depreciation, pathological guilt, morning depression and suicidal ideation. No difference in global network structure was detected for socioeconomic status, service engagement or illness severity. The DAG confirmed the presence of an association between greater insight and self-depreciation, suggesting the more probable causal direction was from insight to depressive symptoms. Conclusions. In schizophrenia, better levels of insight may cause self-depreciation and, possibly, other depressive symptoms. Person-centered and narrative psychotherapeutic approaches may be particularly fit to improve patient insight without dampening self-esteem., Highlights Better insight seems associated with depressive symptoms in schizophrenia.Network analyses were used to explore this association in a large sample.Insight was associated with self-depreciation, guilt, and suicidal ideation.Although cross-sectional, data suggest causal direction from insight to depression.

Abstract

Cell adhesion to surfaces represents the basis for niche colonization and survival. Here we establish serial quantification of adhesion forces of different cell types using a single probe. The pace of single-cell force-spectroscopy was accelerated to up to 200 yeast and 20 mammalian cells per probe when replacing the conventional cell trapping cantilever chemistry of atomic force microscopy by underpressure immobilization with fluidic force microscopy (FluidFM). In consequence, statistically relevant data could be recorded in a rapid manner, the spectrum of examinable cells was enlarged, and the cell physiology preserved until approached for force spectroscopy. Adhesion forces of Candida albicans increased from below 4 up to 16 nN at 37°C on hydrophobic surfaces, whereas a Δhgc1-mutant showed forces consistently below 4 nN. Monitoring adhesion of mammalian cells revealed mean adhesion forces of 600 nN of HeLa cells on fibronectin and were one order of magnitude higher than those observed for HEK cells.

Abstract

BackgroundThe increased use of the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) to investigate cognitive dysfunctions in schizophrenia fostered interest in its sensitivity in the context of family studies. As various measures of the same cognitive domains may have different power to distinguish between unaffected relatives of patients and controls, the relative sensitivity of MCCB tests for relative–control differences has to be established. We compared MCCB scores of 852 outpatients with schizophrenia (SCZ) with those of 342 unaffected relatives (REL) and a normative Italian sample of 774 healthy subjects (HCS). We examined familial aggregation of cognitive impairment by investigating within-family prediction of MCCB scores based on probands’ scores.MethodsMultivariate analysis of variance was used to analyze group differences in adjusted MCCB scores. Weighted least-squares analysis was used to investigate whether probands’ MCCB scores predicted REL neurocognitive performance.ResultsSCZ were significantly impaired on all MCCB domains. REL had intermediate scores between SCZ and HCS, showing a similar pattern of impairment, except for social cognition. Proband's scores significantly predicted REL MCCB scores on all domains except for visual learning.ConclusionsIn a large sample of stable patients with schizophrenia, living in the community, and in their unaffected relatives, MCCB demonstrated sensitivity to cognitive deficits in both groups. Our findings of significant within-family prediction of MCCB scores might reflect disease-related genetic or environmental factors.

Abstract

Self-reported 'personal recovery' and clinical recovery in schizophrenia (SRPR and CR. respectively) reflect different perspectives in schizophrenia outcome, not necessarily concordant with each other and usually representing the consumer's or the therapist's point of view. By means of a cluster analysis on SRPR related variables, we identified three dusters. The first and third cluster included subjects with the best and the poorest clinical outcome respectively. The second cluster was characterized by better insight, higher levels of depression and stigma, lowest self-esteem and personal strength, and highest emotional coping. The first duster showed positive features of recovery, while the third duster showed negative features. The second cluster, with the most positive insight, showed a more complex pattern, a some-what 'paradoxical' mixture of positive and negative personal and clinical features of recovery. The present results suggest the need for a characterization of persons with schizophrenia along SRPR and CR dimensions to design individualized and integrated treatment programs aimed to improve insight and coping strategies, reduce stigma and shape recovery styles. 248. sFlt-1/PlGF ratio in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in patients affected by COVID-19.

Abstract

Objectives: To analyze soluble Fms-like tyrosine Kinase 1 (sFlt-1) and Placental Growth Factor (PlGF) ratio concentrations in COVID-19 pregnant patients with and without Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy (HDP), compared with non COVID-19 pregnant patients with HDP and a control group.Study Design: We recruited and obtained a complete follow-up of 19 COVID-19 pregnant patients with HDP and of 24 COVID-19 normotensive pregnant patients. Demographic, clinical and sFlt-1/PlGF ratio findings were compared with a group of 185 non COVID-19 pregnant patients with HDP and 41 non COVID normotensive patients. Findings were based on univariate analysis and on a multivariate adjusted model, and a case by case analysis of COVID-19 pregnant patients with an abnormal sFlt-1/PlGF ratio > 38 at recruitment.Main Outcome Measures: sFlt-1/PlGF ratio.Results: We confirmed a significant higher prevalence of HDP in women affected by COVID-19 compared to control population. sFlt-1/PlGF ratio was found high in HDP patients, with and without of Sars-Cov2 infection. COVID-19 patients with worse evolution of the disease showed greater rates of obesity and other comorbidities. sFlt/PlGF ratio proved not to be helpful in the differential diagnosis of the severity of this infection.Conclusions: COVID-19 pregnant patients showed a higher prevalence of HDP compared to non COVID-19 controls, as well as higher comorbidity rates. In spite of the possible common endothelial target and damage, between Sars-Cov-2 infection and HDP, the sFlt1/PlGF ratio did not correlate with the severity of this syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
