Abstract: A series of europium and terbium complexes based on a functionalized triazacyclononane carboxylate or phosphinate macrocyclic ligand is described. The influence of the anionic group, that is, carboxylate, methylphosphinate, or phenylphosphinate, on the photophysical properties was studied and rationalized on the basis of DFT calculated structures. The nature, number, and position of electron-donating or electron-withdrawing aryl substituents were varied systematically within the same phenylethynyl scaffold in order to optimize the brightness of the corresponding europium complexes and investigate their two-photon absorption properties. Finally, the europium complexes were examined in cell-imaging applications, and selected terbium complexes were studied as potential oxygen sensors.

Abstract: International audience; This work describes the preparation and characterization of the first efficient solid-state optical limiter operating in the NIR region (telecommunication wavelengths). Nonlinear absorbing chromophores (azabodipy) are incorporated into a sol–gel monolithic matrix using a specifically adapted process, which preserves the chemical integrity of the dyes in the solid. Efficient broadband OPL performances in the solid state could be observed for the first time in the NIR region between 1200 and 1600 nm, with a maximal efficiency around 1300 nm. The properties observed in the solid sol–gel matrix are even better than those in solution, which shows the great potential of this approach regarding protection of active imaging systems against self-dazzling and laser aggression.

Abstract: Highly stable and highly soluble push-pull heptamethine hemicyanines based on the tricyanofuran electron-accepting group can be prepared on a 15 g scale. The compounds display giant second-order nonlinear figure of merit, μβ of up to 31,000×10(-48) esu, and lead to a poled material with a second-order nonlinear response, r33 of 90 pm V(-1) at 1.06 μm.

Abstract: International audience; A polymethine dye was used as a fluorophore and an electroactive modulator in order to achieve reversible electrochemical fluorescence switching in the near infrared (NIR) region. An NIR emissive polymethine dye, 3H-indolium, 2-[2-[2-chloro-3-[2-[1,3-dihydro-3,3-dimethyl-1-(phenylmethyl)-2H-indol-2-ylidene]ethylidene]-5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1-cyclohexen-1-yl]ethenyl]-3,3-dimethyl-1-(phenylmethyl)-bromide (PM1), displayed high absorption and emission in the NIR region. In addition, it showed a relatively reversible electrochemical reaction between −0.5 and 1.1 V vs. Ag wire. In contrast, a keto group (C[double bond, length as m-dash]O) bridged polymethine analogue, 2,6-bis[2-(1,3-dihydro-1-hexyl-3,3-dimethyl-2H-indol-2-ylidene)ethylidene]-4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)cyclohexanone (PM2), showed an irreversible electrochemical reaction, possibly due to the keto group interrupting the full conjugation of the entire molecule in PM2. The reversible redox reaction of PM1 allowed electrochemical fluorescence switching in the NIR region for the first time. The NIR fluorescence switching was visually observable through a visible light cut-off filter with a cyclability of over 100.

Abstract: Herein we report the straightforward preparation of chromophore-functionalized TACN ligand via Cu-free cross-coupling reactions using a common halogenated platform. This versatile methodology allows the preparation of original macrocyclic ligand featuring both optimized antenna for the sensitization of europium luminescence and sulfobetaine zwitterionic groups to ensure water solubility of the complex. In addition preliminary two-photon excited microscopy imaging experiments of fixed cells reveal that sulfobetaine groups are able to limit undesirable non specific interactions with biological surrounding.

Abstract: International audience; The impact of mesoscale activity on phytoplankton and nutrient distribution in the Mozambique Channel was simulated by coupling a biogeochemical model (PISCES) with a regional oceanic model (ROMS). Examples of the effects of eddies on the biogeochemistry of the Mozambique Channel are presented to illustrate the complexity of the system. In the model, several cyclonic eddies were found with low concentrations of chlorophyll at their cores, which contrasts with previous studies in the open ocean. In addition, several anticyclonic eddies were simulated with high concentrations of chlorophyll at their cores. Phytoplankton growth within these mesoscale features (both cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies) occurred in response to nutrient injection into the euphotic zone by advection, and subsequent retention of surrounding nutrient-rich waters within eddies. Offshore nutrient distributions depended strongly on lateral advection of nutrient-rich water from the coastal regions, induced by eddy interaction with the shelf. The environmental conditions at the locations where eddies were generated had an important effect on nutrient concentrations within these structures.

Abstract: Herein, we provide some structural evidence of the complexation color-change of murexide solutions in presence of lanthanide, which has been used for decades in complexometric studies. For Ln = Sm to Lu and Y, the com- pounds crystallize as monomeric (Ln(Murex)3)·11 H 2O with an N3O6 tricapped square-antiprism environment, which are stable up to 2508C. Single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior is then observed on the Yb III derivative in an original nine-coordinat- ed environment. In-field slow relaxation (D = (15.6 � 1) K; t0 = 2.73 � 10 � 6 s) is observed with a very narrow distribution of the relaxation time (amax = 0.09). Magnetic and photophys- ical properties can be correlated. On one hand the analysis of NIR emission spectrum permits to have access to crystal field parameters and to compare them with those extracted from dc measurements. On the other hand, magnetic meas- urements permit to identify the nature of the MJ states in- volved in the 2 F5/2! 2 F7/2 luminescence spectrum. The gap between the low-lying states is in agreement with the energy barrier obtained from magnetic slow-relaxation mea- surement.

Abstract: Mononuclear complexes with the formula [Ln(hfac)3(L1)] and [Ln(hfac)3(L2)] with hfac– = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate, L1 = 2-{4,5-[4,5-bis(propylthio)tetrathiafulvalenyl]-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl}pyridine and L2 = 2-{1-methylpyridyl-4,5-[4,5-bis(propylthio)tetrathiafulvalenyl]-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl}pyridine are reported for Ln = YIII, ErIII and YbIII. The X-ray structures reveal that the Ln(hfac)3 moieties are coordinated to the bidentate 1-(2-pyridylmethyl)benzimidazole acceptor. The coordination polyhedron is described as a more or less distorted triangular dodecahedron prism (D2d symmetry), depending on the degree of alkylation of the ligand. The influence of this distortion on the magnetic and photophysical properties is determined by the fit of the static magnetic measurements and luminescence spectra. Irradiation of the lowest-energy intraligand charge transfer (ILCTs) bands (21740 cm–1) induces the metal-centred 4I13/2 4I15/2 and 2F5/2 2F7/2 luminescence for the ErIII and YbIII complexes, respectively. The alkylation enhances both the intensity and lifetime of the YbIII luminescence. The ErIII luminescence can be sensitised by the antenna effect, whereas the YbIII luminescence could involve a photoinduced electron transfer (PET). Finally, the evolution of the YbIII luminescence spectra shape due to the alkylation is directly correlated to the energy splitting of the MJ states that stem from the 2F7/2 multiplet ground state. Ab initio calculations give evidence of the nature of the MJ ground state as well as the orientation of the associated magnetic anisotropy axis (i.e., the one that lies along the less electronegative direction). The key role of the imidazole proton of L2 is highlighted. The calculated energy splitting of the 2F5/2 multiplet state perfectly matches the emission lines.

Abstract: International audience; The long luminescence lifetime of lanthanide based bioprobes is a great advantage for their specific detection in autofluorescent or labelled cells and tissues. It is also a valuable tool for sensing the physicochemical microenvironment and molecular interactions by Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). However, standard confocal and multiphoton laser scanning microscopes are not adapted for imaging with such temporal resolution, because the typical pixel dwell time is too short compared to the luminescence lifetime. We show that the rapid sampling rate and laser control of a usual confocal microscope can instead be used for precise measurement of long lifetime decays (μs to ms range). Furthermore, both raster- and line-scanning microscopes can specifically detect long luminescence signals in the time-gated mode by shifting the pinhole or the confocal slit in the lagging direction. We characterized the subcellular localization and accurately measured the millisecond luminescence lifetimes of the benchmark two-photon europium probe [Na]3[EuL1G3], and specifically imaged this label in the presence of short-lived fluorescent species. Fine variations of the luminescence lifetime of this lanthanide complex were revealed and mapped in cells in the presence of a FRET acceptor, allowing quantification of the FRET efficiency independently of donor concentration. These results demonstrate a high and yet unexploited potential of quantitative confocal and multiphoton microscopy for time-gated and lifetime imaging of lanthanide-based biological sensors.

Abstract: International audience; This article provides an overview of the photophysical behavior diversity of polymethine chromophores which are ubiquitous in biological imaging and material sciences. One major challenge in this class of chromophore is to correlate the chemical structure to the observed optical properties, especially when symmetry-breaking phenomena occur. With the constant concern for rationalization of their spectroscopy, we propose an extended classification of polymethine dyes based on their ground state electronic configuration using three limit forms namely: cyanine, dipole and bis-dipole. The chemical modifications of the dye and the influence of exogenous parameters can promote dramatic spectroscopic changes that can be correlated to significant electronic reorganization between the three-abovementioned forms. The deep understanding of such phenomena should allow to identify, predict and take advantage of the versatile electronic structure of polymethines.

The lanthanide ions adopt a distorted-square-antiprism coordination polyhedron (D4d symmetry). The DyIII compound behaves like a single-molecule magnet (SMM), whereas no out-of-phase component of the magnetic susceptibility is measured for YbIII. The crystal-field splitting of the 2F7/2 and 6H15/2 ground multiplets of YbIII and DyIII, respectively, were determined by means of ab initio calculations and confirmed by the emission energy lines of the 2F5/22F7/2 luminescence spectrum in the case of YbIII. The nature of the MJ ground states indicates that YbIII is not an Ising system, whereas DyIII is. The experimental and calculated anisotropy axes for DyIII lie along the most negatively charged direction, whereas those for YbIII lie almost perpendicularly. Abstract: A series of 4,4′-disubstituted[2,2′]-bipyridines, featuring π-conjugated substituents such as donor-(acceptor-) substituted styryl, thienylvinyl, phenylimino and phenylazo groups, have been synthesized. X-Ray structures are provided for three ligands containing –CC–, –CN– and –NN– linkers, respectively. These chromophores display good to excellent thermal stabilities with decomposition temperatures of up to 350°C. The strong influence of the nature of the endgroups and π-linkers on the optical properties is discussed. The stepwise protonation of 4,4′-dibutylaminostyryl-[2,2′]-bipyridine and its coordination behavior to different metallic moieties [Zn(II), Hg(II), Pd(II), Re(I), Re(VII)] have also been investigated. Abstract: Intense local fishing pressure is likely to induce significant local decreases in both resource biomass and fishing yields. This is what we term 'local overfishing'. Such a phenomenon and its consequences for stock assessment are investigated with the fisheries simulator SHADYS (Simulateur halieutique de dynamiques spatiales : spatialized simulator of fisheries dynamics). In SHADYS, resource dynamic is based on an advection-diffusion-reaction equation. After a brief presentation, the simulator is used to characterize the 'local overfishing' phenomenon as a 'wound' of the population. The latter is subsequently able to 'heal' and to recover its initial distribution. We show that, associated with cooperation tactics of the fishing fleets, local overfishing may induce non-linear relationships between catches per unit of effort ( CPUE) and fishing effort calculated locally. In particular, it is shown that there is a strictly decreasing relationship between catchability and effort when fishing vessels apply intense local fishing pressure but do not cooperate; that the relationship may increase when vessels cooperate but do not apply intense local fishing pressures; and finally, that it may go through a maximum when, simultaneously, ships cooperate and have high local exploitation rates. These three main types of theoretical relationships correspond well with those observed in reality. Abstract: Using generalized additive models, we show evidence for nonlinear relationships between various hydrological factors and age-structured catch per unit effort of Atlantic yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) for two fishing fleets. Catchability effects are distinguished from tuna environmental preference effects in the catch per unit effort variability. With respect to catchability, an important nonlinear effect of local fishing effort is highlighted for each fleet. It is interpreted as resulting from a local overfishing phenomenon of adult yellowfin tuna and from vessel fishing tactics (cooperation/spying). The environmental preferences obtained facilitate the interpretation of the hierarchical spatial distribution and age-dependent movements of the yellowfin population. We show that, on a large spatiotemporal scale (the whole ocean), low salinity is a good predictor of yellowfin habitat. Juveniles are mainly distributed in low-salinity waters (1) when adults extend their range to waters of 0.036 kg·kg1. On a mesoscale, adult population annual reproductive transatlantic displacements are probably driven by temperature and salinity gradients to warm and low-salinity locations that are favorable for juveniles. Northsouth seasonal movements of the population are clearly related to warmwater seasonal oscillations. On a small scale, ocean thermic stability and gradients of sea surface temperature are important physical factors determining yellowfin concentration.

Abstract: Diastereoselective homochiral self-assembly occurs in solution by mixing the propeller-like racemic tris(DEAS-bpy) ruthenium(II) cation B [DEAS-bpy = 4,4'-bis(diethylamino[TRISPHAT = tris(tetrachlorobenzenediolato)phosphate(V)]. This phenomenon is clearly shown by 1H NMR spectroscopic studies which reveal: (i) the existence of a rapid equilibrium between their homochiral and heterochiral associations, (ii) at room temperature, the preferential formation of the homochiral ion pairs with a ratio homochiral/heterochiral = 72:28, and (iii) at 243 K, the almost pure homochiral associations (B?,A?2) and (B?,A?2).

Abstract: Three quinoxaline derivatives 3, 4 and 5 were prepared by condensation of tetraones RC(O)–CH2–C(O)– (O)–CH2–C(O)R [1, R = Ph; 2, R = neo-Pen] with o-phenylenediamine or (R,R)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane. 1H, 13C and 15N NMR studies show that these derivatives are best described as their keto-enamine form with N–H···O intramolecular hydrogen bonds. This preferred tautomeric form is confirmed by X-ray structural studies of 3 and 5. Compounds 3 and 4, containing an extended delocalized π-system, exhibit fluorescence properties. In contrast, fluorescence is inhibited in 5, when the central aromatic part is replaced by a cyclohexyl group.

They activate the C H bonds of cycloalkanes to form the corresponding surface metal–cycloalkyl complexes. They catalyse the metathesis reaction of alkanes which is an unprecedented process affording the formation of higher and lower homologues. They also catalyse the hydrogenolysis of alkanes and especially ethane which cannot be cleaved by the corresponding group-4 metal hydrides.

Abstract: This paper presents the simulator SHADYS (‘simulator halieutique de dynamiques spatiales’). SHADYS is a tool devoted to the representation of spatial processes involved in fisheries dynamics. It puts together three fundamental entities in an explicit spatio-temporal way: the environment, the fish populations under consideration and the fishing fleet. It is based on simple, realistic and well identified mechanisms (density-dependent habitat selection, advection and diffusion of a fish population, fishermen search strategy, etc.) implemented by interfacing numerical models with a GIS (geographic information system). As a virtual laboratory, SHADYS allows experiments to be performed in a theoretical world, such experiments being generally impossible to perform in reality. As an illustration, different scenarios of a marine refugia-based management have been explored using the SHADYS simulator. Different simulations are conducted to assess the short-term effects on yield of a marine protected area. It is shown that for diffusive or migratory species, the yield per recruit as a function of the protected surface can reach a maximum. Under this condition, the concept of ‘space overfishing’ is meaningful. Protected areas then behave like ‘sources’ and exploited areas like ‘sinks’. For resident populations, the larger the protected area is, the lower the catches per recruit are. Regarding the spatial distribution of the fishing effort, it is shown that if it is spatially distributed in order to maximize catches, then fishing boats will slowly tend to be distributed all along the boundaries of the protected area.

Abstract: International audience; : The synthesis of tris(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate)lanthanide(III) complexes featuring a diethylaminostyryl-2,2'-bipyridine coligand was achieved for lanthanum; the near-infrared (NIR) emitters neodymium, erbium, and ytterbium; and the transition-metal yttrium. The photophysical properties were thoroughly studied, and it was demonstrated that the conjugated bipyridine ligand acts as a good antenna for the sensitization of the NIR emitters. The two-photon absorption (TPA) properties of all five complexes were investigated by using both two-photon excited fluorescence and the Z-scan method. We demonstrate that the nature of the rare earth ion has almost no influence on the TPA properties centered on the conjugated bipyridyl ligand. Finally, we show that Yb(III) is sensitized by a two-photon antenna effect, and that Nd(III) is mostly sensitized by a one-photon process involving direct excitation of forbidden f-f transitions.

Abstract: Climate-induced changes in the physical, chemical, and biological environment are expected to increasingly stress marine ecosystems, with important consequences for fisheries exploitation. Here, we use the APECOSM-E numerical model (Apex Predator ECOSystem Model - Estimation) to evaluate the future impacts of climate change on the physiology, spatial distribution, and abundance of skipjack tuna, the worldwide most fished species of tropical tuna. The main novelties of our approach lie in the mechanistic link between environmental factors, metabolic rates, and behavioral responses and in the fully three dimensional representation of habitat and population abundance. Physical and biogeochemical fields used to force the model are provided by the last generation of the IPSL-CM5 Earth System Model run from 1990 to 2100 under a 'business-as-usual' scenario (RCP8.5). Our simulations show significant changes in the spatial distribution of skipjack tuna suitable habitat, as well as in their population abundance. The model projects deterioration of skipjack habitat in most tropical waters and an improvement of habitat at higher latitudes. The primary driver of habitat changes is ocean warming, followed by food density changes. Our projections show an increase of global skipjack biomass between 2010 and 2050 followed by a marked decrease between 2050 and 2095. Spawning rates are consistent with population trends, showing that spawning depends primarily on the adult biomass. On the other hand, growth rates display very smooth temporal changes, suggesting that the ability of skipjack to keep high metabolic rates in the changing environment is generally effective. Uncertainties related to our model spatial resolution, to the lack or simplification of key processes and to the climate forcings are discussed.

Abstract: The reaction between (4,5-bis(2-pyridyl-N-oxidemethylthio)-4',5')-ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvene (L(1)) or -methyldithiotetrathiafulvene (L(2)) ligands and Ln(hfac)3·nH2O precursors (Ln(III) = Pr, Tb, Dy, Er, and Yb) leads to the formation of seven dinuclear complexes of formula [Ln2(hfac)6(H2O)x(L(y))2] (x = 2 and y = 1 for Ln(III) = Pr (1); x = 0 and y = 1 for Ln(III) = Tb (2), Dy (3), Er (4) and Yb (5); x = 0 and y = 2 for Ln(III) = Tb (6) and Dy (7)). Their X-ray structures reveal that the coordination environment of each Ln(III) center is filled by two N-oxide groups coming from two different ligands L(y). UV-visible absorption properties have been experimentally measured and rationalized by TD-DFT calculations. The temperature dependences of static magnetic measurements have been fitted. The ground state corresponds to the almost pure |M(J) = ±13/2〉 while the first excited state (±0.77|±11/2〉 ± 0.50|±3/2〉 ± 0.39|±5/2〉) is located at 19 cm(-1) and 26.9 cm(-1) respectively for 3 and 7. Upon irradiation at 77 K and at room temperature, in the range 25,000-20,835 cm(-1), both compounds 4 and 5 display a metal-centered luminescence attributed to (4)I(13/2) → (4)I(15/2) (6660 cm(-1)) and (2)F(5/2) → (2)F(7/2) (9972 cm(-1)) transitions, respectively. Emission spectroscopy provides a direct probe of the |±5/2〉 ground state multiplet splitting, which has been confronted to magnetic data. The energy separation of 225 cm(-1) between the ground state and the first excited level (M(J) = ±3/2) fits exactly the second emission line (234 cm(-1)). While no out-phase-signal is detected for 3, the change of ligand L(1) → L(2) induces a change of coordination sphere symmetry around the Dy(III) increasing the energy splitting between the ground and first excited states, and 7 displays a single molecule magnet behavior.

Abstract: Individual metabolism, predator-prey relationships, and the role of biodiversity are major factors underlying the dynamics of food webs and their response to environmental variability. Despite their crucial, complementary and interacting influences, they are usually not considered simultaneously in current marine ecosystem models. In an attempt to fill this gap and determine if these factors and their interaction are sufficient to allow realistic community structure and dynamics to emerge, we formulate a mathematical model of the size-structured dynamics of marine communities which integrates mechanistically individual, population and community levels. The model represents the transfer of energy generated in both time and size by an infinite number of interacting fish species spanning from very small to very large species. It is based on standard individual level assumptions of the Dynamic Energy Budget theory (DEB) as well as important ecological processes such as opportunistic size-based predation and competition for food. Resting on the inter-specific body-size scaling relationships of the DEB theory, the diversity of life-history traits (i.e. biodiversity) is explicitly integrated. The stationary solutions of the model as well as the transient solutions arising when environmental signals (e.g. variability of primary production and temperature) propagate through the ecosystem are studied using numerical simulations. It is shown that in the absence of density-dependent feedback processes, the model exhibits unstable oscillations. Density-dependent schooling probability and schooling-dependent predatory and disease mortalities are proposed to be important stabilizing factors allowing stationary solutions to be reached. At the community level, the shape and slope of the obtained quasi-linear stationary spectrum matches well with empirical studies. When oscillations of primary production are simulated, the model predicts that the variability propagates along the spectrum in a given frequency-dependent size range before decreasing for larger sizes. At the species level, the simulations show that small and large species dominate the community successively (small species being more abundant at small sizes and large species being more abundant at large sizes) and that the total biomass of a species decreases with its maximal size which again corroborates empirical studies. Our results indicate that the simultaneous consideration of individual growth and reproduction, size-structured trophic interactions, the diversity of life-history traits and a density-dependent stabilizing process allow realistic community structure and dynamics to emerge without any arbitrary prescription. As a logical consequence of our model construction and a basis for future studies, we define the function Φ as the relative contribution of each species to the total biomass of the ecosystem, for any given size. We argue that this function is a measure of the functional role of biodiversity characterizing the impact of the structure of the community (its species composition) on its function (the relative proportions of losses, dissipation and biological work).

232. A multidimensional approach to the analysis of chemical shift titration experiments in the frame of a multiple reaction scheme

Abstract: We present a method for fitting curves acquired by chemical shift titration experiments, in the frame of a three-step complexation mechanism. To that end, we have implemented a fitting procedure, based on a nonlinear least squares fitting method, that determines the best fitting curve using a "coarse grid search" approach and provides distributions for the different parameters of the complexation model that are compatible with the experimental precision. The resulting analysis protocol is first described and validated on a theoretical data set. We show its ability to converge to the true parameter values of the simulated reaction scheme and to evaluate complexation constants together with multidimensional uncertainties. Then, we apply this protocol to the study of the supramolecular interactions, in aqueous solution, between a lanthanide complex and three different model molecules, using NMR titration experiments. We show that within the uncertainty that can be evaluated from the parameter distributions generated during our analysis, the affinities between the lanthanide derivative and each model molecule can be discriminated, and we propose values for the corresponding thermodynamic constants.

Their X-ray structures reveal that the surrounding of each Ln(III) center is filled by two N-oxide groups coming from two different ligands L. These tetranuclear complexes have the highest nuclearity which is reported until now for coordination compounds of lanthanide involving TTF-based ligands. Direct current (dc) measurements highlight the paramagnetic behavior of the compounds with a significant crystal field effect. The temperature dependences of static magnetic measurements for 4 have been fitted. The ground state corresponds to M(J) = ±5/2 while the first excited state (M(J) = ±3/2) was localized at +214 cm(-1) which was well correlated with the luminescence transition. UV-visible absorption properties have been experimentally measured and rationalized by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. Upon irradiation at 77 K and room temperature, in the range 24390-20835 cm(-1), both compounds 3 and 4 display a metal-centered luminescence attributed to (4)I(13/2) → (4)I(15/2) (6660 cm(-1)) and (2)F(5/2) → (2)F(7/2) (signal centered around the value of 9966 cm(-1)) transitions, respectively. The observed six transitions could be attributed to the M(J) state splitting due to the existence of two Yb1 and Yb2 ions with slightly different polyhedra in 4.

Abstract: International audience; Centro-symmetric dinuclear complexes of formula [Ln(tta)(3)(L)](2)*xCH(2)Cl(2), (tta(-) = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate anion, x = 0.5 for Ln = Eu (1a), Tb (3), and Dy (4) and x = 0 for Ln = Eu (1b) and Nd (2)) have been synthesized using the tetrathiafulvalene-3-pyridine-N-oxide as a bridging ligand (L). X-ray structures have shown the formation of channels with CH(2)Cl(2) solvent inside. 1 is stable with both filled channels (at 150 K) and empty channels (at room temperature). The Dy(III) analogue displays a complex butterfly like hysteresis loop at 1.5 K. Photophysical properties of the coordination complexes have been studied by solution and solid-state absorption spectroscopy. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations have been carried out on the diamagnetic Y(III) derivative to shed light on the absorption spectrum. For 2, the excitation of the charge transfer transitions induces line shape emission in the near-infrared spectral range assigned to (4)F(3/2) → (4)I(9/2), (4)F(3/2) → (4)I(11/2), and (4)F(3/2) → (4)I(13/2) neodymium centered transitions. The reversible redox-activity of the ligand L makes possible an original sensitization process involving a ligand centered charge separation followed by energy transfer to the Nd(III) ion upon recombination.

Abstract: International audience; A versatile approach is introduced for the synthesis of well-defined, biocompatible conjugates combining two-photon chromophores and hydrophilic multifunctional polymers synthesized by RAFT controlled radical polymerization. As an illustration, two different classes of conjugates carrying multiple fluorophores (based on an anthracene moiety, Anth) or photosensitizers (based on a dibromobenzene moiety, DBB) along the polymer chain were elaborated for bioimaging and photodynamic therapy (PDT) applications, respectively. In both cases, the polymer greatly improved the solubility in biorelevant media as well as the cell uptake. Anth conjugates provided high quality fluorescence microscopy images using both one- and two-photon excitation. DBB conjugates potently induced the death of cancer cells upon photoactivation.

Abstract: International audience; Oceanic ecosystems support livelihoods and supply food for hundreds of millions of people. But these ecosystems are deteriorating rapidly and many of the world's oceanic fisheries are in a precarious condition. In addition to well-known and pressing fishery management issues, economic globalization is connecting fisheries beyond the frontiers of the organizations responsible for their management and climate-associated changes are deeply modifying ecosystems, pushing them toward new states and no return situations. The status quo is not a sustainable option, and improved international governance is urgently needed to address this situation. Our proposition consists of an inclusive global science-policy process combining major improvements to the present governance systems, including new incentives for international cooperation and coordination, with an ambitious scientific program to help anticipate threats and opportunities and integrate complex information regarding long-term issues. It would constitute a major step toward sustainability.

Abstract: International audience; The development of near-infrared dyes for third order nonlinear optical applications and particularly for optical power limiting at telecommunications wavelengths triggered the revival of old dyes like polymethine dyes featuring an odd number of carbon atoms. Currently numerous research endeavor is focused on the understanding of their spectroscopy in solution and in the solid state in close relationship with their electronic structure. In this context, the dramatic effect of the counter ion on the heptamethine optical properties was highlighted depending on the dissociating character of the media. The unusual consideration of this parameter allows us to explore the so-called "cyanine limit" and to finely tune the heptamethine absorption in view of future use as dopant in a material for optical limiting applications.

Abstract: A π-conjugated donor functionalized tris-dipicolinate complex, featuring promising two-photon excited luminescence properties in water was successfully embedded in a monolithic sol–gel material. A complete spectroscopic study unambiguously indicates that the europium complex conserves its integrity in this sol–gel matrix and the improvement of the luminescence lifetime clearly indicates a stabilisation of the complex in the matrix. Biphotonic confocal microscopy measurement shows that the Eu(III) luminescence can be sensitized in the sol–gel material using a two-photon antenna process, which is a first step towards the design of doped sol–gel nanoparticles for two-photon imaging applications.

Abstract: The present study presents a method of assessing and fitting a stock-recruitment relationship. The method is based on a combination of an equilibrium production model and a yield per recruit model. It does not use recruitment data which are, in general, highly dispersed, but production data. Thus, the relationship obtained is not of the parametric form of classical stock-recruitment relationship such as those of the Beverton and Holt (1957) and Ricker (1954), however, in some cases, the resulting stock-recruitment curve resembles models currently used in fisheries science. It is interpreted as an expectation of the recruitment conditionally to stock spawning biomass and stock demographic structure. However, for some realistic values of the parameters, the curve thus obtained describes a loop which suggests that two different recruitment levels may be expected from the same stock spawning biomass level. This theoretical property is illustrated with simulations. As an illustrative example, the method is applied to North-West Atlantic gadoid stocks. The significance of the method, its originality, the validity of the underlying assumptions and their conceptual consequences are discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Six dinuclear complexes, [Ln2(hfac)6(H2O)2(L)] [Ln = Y (1) and Er (2)], [Yb2(hfac)6(L)] (3), [Ln2(tta)6(L)]*3CH2Cl2 [Ln = Y (4) and Er (5)] and [Yb2(tta)6(L)]*2C6H14 (6), have been prepared by coordination reactions between the [Ln(β-diketonate)3]*2H2O (Ln = YIII, ErIII and YbIII; β-diketonate = hfac- or tta-) building blocks and 4,4′,7,7′-tetra-tert-butyl-2,2′-bi-1,3-benzodithiole-5,5′,6,6′-tetrone ligand (L), which acts as a bridge between the two metal centres. Their X-ray structures reveal that the symmetries around the lanthanide atoms depend on the β-diketonate anions and the size of the 4f ions. The dc magnetic measurements showed paramagnetic behaviour with thermal variations of the χMT products that depend on the crystal-field symmetry around the 4f ions. The photophysical properties of the coordination complexes were studied by solid-state absorption spectroscopy, and DFT calculations were carried out on the free ligand L and the diamagnetic YIII derivatives 1 and 4. Irradiation of the charge-transfer (ILCT) band of L [λex = 700 nm (14285 cm-1)], 1 and 4 [λex = 750 nm (13335 cm-1)] induced weak fluorescence in L at 12500 cm-1 (for free L) and in 1 at 12200 cm-1, whereas in the case of 3, irradiation at 13335 cm-1 induced weak line-shape emission assigned to the 2F5/2 → 2F7/2 (9880 cm-1) ytterbium-centred transition. No residual charge-transfer emission was observed in this last case attesting the efficient energy transfer from the excited charge-transfer state to the 2F5/2 state. The weak intensity of the emissions should mainly be attributed to energy back-transfer between the relaxed CT excited state and the CT state. Nevertheless, sensitisation of the YbIII luminescence in 3 was achieved through the lowest-energy donor excited state (13585 cm-1) reported until now

Abstract: Six agricultural landscapes in Poland (PL), the Netherlands (NL), France (FR), Italy (IT), Scotland (UK) and Denmark (DK) were studied, and a common method was developed for undertaking farm inventories and the derivation of farm nitrogen (N) balances and N surplus from the in total 222 farms and 11 440 ha of farmland. In all landscapes, a large variation in the farm N surplus was found, and thereby a large potential for reductions. The highest average N surpluses were found in the most livestock-intensive landscapes of IT, FR, and NL; on average 202 ± 28, 179 ± 63 and 178 ± 20 kg N ha−1yr−1, respectively. However, all landscapes showed hotspots, especially from livestock farms, including a special UK case with landless large-scale poultry farming. So, whereas the average N surplus from the land-based UK farms dominated by extensive sheep grazing was only 31 ± 10 kg N ha−1yr−1, the landscape average was similar to those of PL and DK (122 ± 20 and 146 ± 55 kg N ha−1yr−1, respectively) when landless poultry were included. However, the challenge remains how to account for indirect N surpluses and emissions from such farms with a large export of manure out of the landscape. We conclude that farm N balances are a useful indicator for N losses and the potential for improving N management. Significant correlations to N surplus were found, both with ammonia air concentrations and nitrate levels in soils and groundwater, measured during the landscape data collection campaign from 2007–2009. This indicates that farm N surpluses may be used as an independent dataset for validation of measured and modelled N emissions in agricultural landscapes. However, no significant correlation was found to N measured in surface waters, probably because of the short time horizon of the study. A case study of the development in N surplus from the landscape in DK from 1998–2008 showed a 22 % reduction, related to statistically significant effects (p < 0.01) of measures targeted at reducing N emissions from livestock farms. Based on the large differences between the average and the most modern and N-efficient farms, it was concluded that N-surplus reductions of 25–50 % as compared to the present level were realistic in all landscapes. The implemented N-surplus method was thus effective at comparing and synthesizing results on farm N emissions and the potentials of mitigation options, and is recommended for use in combination with other methods for the assessment of landscape N emissions and farm N efficiency, including more detailed N sink and N source hotspot mapping, measurements and modelling.

Abstract: Complex dynamic models of carbon and nitrogen are often used to investigate the consequences of climate change on agricultural production and greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. These models require high temporal resolution input data regarding the timing of field operations. This paper describes the Timelines model, which predicts the timelines of key field operations across Europe. The evaluation of the model suggests that while for some crops a reasonable agreement was obtained in the prediction of the times of field operations, there were some very large differences which need to be corrected. Systematic variations in the date of harvesting and in the timing of the first application of N fertiliser to winter crops need to be corrected and the prediction of soil workability and trafficability might enable the prediction of ploughing and applications of solid manure in preparation for spring crops. The data concerning the thermal time thresholds for sowing and harvesting underlying the model should be updated and extended to a wider range of crops. Abstract: This paper presents the parameter estimation and sensitivity analysis of the APECOSM-E model, which describes the basin scale 3D size-structured population dynamics of the skipjack tuna population in the Indian Ocean under the joint effect of environmental variability and fisheries exploitation. The model is presented in detail in the companion paper ( Dueri et al., 2012 ). A common methodology based on the evaluation of a cost function that combines the negative log-likelihoods of commercial catches and size frequencies is used for both tasks. A Bayesian term representing the a priori probabilities about the model parameters is added to the cost function used for parameter estimation. The partial derivatives of the cost function with respect to the parameters are obtained by deriving the tangent linear code of the model by automatic differentiation of the direct code. A minimization algorithm is used to estimate the parameters related to fisheries and maximise the fitness of the model to the available observations. In a second step, we evaluate the local sensitivity of the non-estimated parameters and identify the model parameters that have an important effect on the output of the model and that would deserve better measurements in order to reduce the level of uncertainty in the model outputs. The comparison between the optimized simulation and the observations allows identifying the model's strengths and limitations, in the perspective of using the model to test scenarios concerning the resilience of the population and the sustainability of its exploitation in the Indian Ocean.

Abstract: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-2979.2012.00480.x/abstract; International audience; Assessment of open-ocean ecosystems relies on understanding ecosystem dynamics, and development of end-to-end ecosystem models represents an approach that addresses these challenges. These models incorporate the population structure and dynamics of marine organisms at all trophic levels. Satellite remote sensing of ocean colour and direct at-sea measurements provide information on the lower trophic levels of the models, and fisheries studies provide information on top predator species. However, these models suffer from a lack of observations for the so-called mid-trophic levels, which are poorly sampled by conventional methods. This restricts further development, and we argue that acoustic observations from a range of platforms (e.g. buoys, moorings) can be linked to the ecosystem models to provide much-needed information on these trophic levels. To achieve this, the models need to be tailored to incorporate the available acoustic data, and the link from acoustic backscatter to biologically relevant variables (biomass, carbon, etc.) needs attention. Methods to progress this issue are proposed, including the development of observation models and focal areas for ground truthing. To ensure full use of the potential of acoustic techniques, we argue that a systematic and long-term strategy incorporating the following elements is required: development of metadata standards and automated data analysis, inclusion of acoustic sensors in large-scale observatory programmes, improvement of observation-model links, and efficient sampling strategies. Finally, these elements should be tied together in an observation-modelling framework, coordinated by international organizations, to improve our understanding and quantification of open-ocean ecosystem dynamics.
