Abstract

First-kind Chebyshev polynomials are used as the basis functions in this study to present the approximations to the eighth-order boundary-value problems. The problem is reduced using the suggested approach into a set of linear algebraic equations, which are then solved to determine the unknown constants. To demonstrate the application and effectiveness of the strategy, analytical results are provided using tables and graphs for three examples. The results obtained using the proposed method reveal that it is simple and outperforms comparable solutions in the literature.

Abstract

Lymphangioendothelioma, also known as acquired progressive lymphangioma, is a rare vascular neoplasm of lymphatic origin. Although in light-skinned individuals lesions typically present as erythematous to violaceous papules or plaques, in dark-skinned patients lesions often appear hyperpigmented. Histopathologic distinction of lymphangioendothelioma from early Kaposi sarcoma and angiosarcoma is imperative considering the therapeutic and prognostic implications. Herein, we present a 71-year-old woman with slowly progressive hyperpigmented papules and histopathology demonstrating thin-walled vascular spaces interspersed between collagen bundles, consistent with lymphangioendothelioma. We describe the clinical and histologic findings of this rare entity and highlight histologic mimics that might result in diagnostic delay.

219. Isolation and characterisation of quercitrin, a potent anti-sickle cell anaemia agent from the Nigerian shrub, Alchornea spp

Abstract

Alchornea spp. is an important plant genus in Africa, where it has been used traditionally by healers for the treatment of sickle cell anaemia (SCA). SCA is a genetic disorder endemic to African and sub-Saharan populations, along with other anaemic conditions. Plant leaves of this genus are used as a 'blood tonic' to reduce the symptoms of SCA in Nigeria, even though their active components or the mechanisms through which they act are not fully elucidated. In this research, the raw botanical, active botanical extract and purified active compounds of Alchornea spp. leaves were chemically characterized as a first step in the standardization of a phytomedicine and the development of an antisickling drug-lead. The project used a combination of various chromatographic and spectrometric techniques, including column chromatography, Liquid ChromatographyUltraviolet Mass spectroscopy (LC-UV/MS) to successively purify fractions, guided by bioactivities. Plant sample characteristics were assessed prior to characterisation of bioactive properties. Plant identifications linked to the Alchornea species was confirmed by DNA barcoding based on the rbcL gene sequence. Further phylogenetic assessments of plants sampled from various locations of Southwestern, Nigeria suggested no major genetic variation within the Nigerian samples. Flow infusion electrospray mass spectrometry (FIE-MS) for metabolomic profiling suggest variations in the metabolome which could reflect prevailing environmental factors as the coastal samples were distinctive. Pathway analysis suggested that the metabolomes differed in 5 metabolic pathways; biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, tricarboxylic acid cycle, ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, and ubiquinone and other terpenoid-quinone biosynthesis. This suggests stress factors such salinity along the coastal ecosystems could be influencing plant sample biochemistry. Results of studies directed at evaluating the anti-sickling activity of extract fractions/components and isolating the bioactive components present in the Nigerian Alchornea spp leaves, scientifically validated the in vitro potential of Alchornea spp in the management of sickle cell anaemia. Both the crude methanol extract and resultant fractions of Alchornea spp leaves demonstrated significant decrease in percentage sickling (>70% RBC sickling-inhibition) and rate of polymerization with increasing concentrations, prompting the isolation of components; ALM7T5 and ALM7V11. These compounds demonstrated significant anti-sickling activity, 87.16±2.39 and 93.06±2.69 % RBC sickling-inhibition at 0.4 mg/mL and 0.5 mg/mL respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time this property is being reported for this compound(s).Additionally, this work assessed Alchornea spp. extracts and fractions for their anti-oxidant properties. The results showed that the polar extracts of Alchornea spp. exhibited good antioxidant activities, with highest reducing power activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) at 66.40±1.59 % radical scavenging activity for methanol extract, followed by the aqueous extract at 61.71±2.45 % radical scavenging activity, at 400µg/mL concentration Structural Elucidation of ALM7T5 and ALM7V11, followed by further characterization identified these compounds as a single compound which both inhibits and marginally reverses sickling of sickled RBCs under hypoxic conditions, in vitro. The major anti-sickling chemical isolated from the Nigerian Alchornea spp., was identified by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to be quercitrin (quercetin 3-rhamnoside). In addition, the compound also inhibited Hb polymerisation possibly by increasing haemoglobin oxygen affinity. It also stabilized SCA-RBC membrane, possibly with increase in RBC deformability, and a reduction in RBC fragility. The impact of quercitrin on sickling was equally assessed using the metabolomics approach. Based on in-depth analysis of key metabolites and pathways, quercitrin-treated SCA RBCs metabolome depicted a metabolic signature similar to normal RBCs metabolome. This suggests that quercitrin could revert SCA RBC metabolomes to be equivalent to those of non-SCA RBCs. These findings are particularly exciting as they suggest that this compound may have multiple actions in reducing RBC sickling. This gives credence to the possibility of quercitrin mitigating vaso-occlusion and microvascular dysfunction by reversing sickling of circulating sickled red blood cells in vivo. The work described in this thesis has generated novel findings that are likely to inform efforts directed at the development of anti-sickling drugs.

222. Antihypertensive Potential of Japanese Quail (Couturnix Couturnix Japonica) Egg Yolk Oil (QEYO) in Sprague Dawley Rats

Abstract

Oils from animal sources have been used for centuries in the management of diseases. This research was conducted to screen the ex vivo and in vivo toxicity of quail egg yolk oil (QEYO) extracts and assess their effects on the management of hypertension in rats. QEYO was extracted using gentle heating (GH) and n-hexane (NHN). The extracts were subjected to toxicity testing using the hen’s egg test on chorioallantoic membrane (HET-CAM) and bovine corneal histology test. Acute and sub-chronic toxicity (28 days) were evaluated in rats. Hypertension was induced in rats by administering 80 mg/kg of Nω-L-Arginine Methyl Ester (L-NAME) per day for 28 days. Treatments commenced on the 14th day; Nifedipine at 30 mg/kg and 1 mL of distilled water were administered as positive and negative controls. Blood pressure (BP), lipid profiles, and oxidative stress markers were quantified. No irritation was observed using the HET-CAM test in the egg treated with both extracts. Bovine corneal histology showed no lesions in all treated groups. No signs of toxicity were observed in either acute or sub-chronic toxicity studies. A significant reduction in blood pressure was observed in rats treated with the extracts (p < 0.05). Changes in total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), low-density lipoproteins (LDLPs), and high-density lipoproteins (HDLPs) were not significant compared to the control (p > 0.05). Oxidative stress markers (SOD and CAT) increased significantly in the treated groups compared to the control, while the malondialdehyde levels decreased (p < 0.05). QEYO was safe in both ex vivo and in vivo studies and can be said to have the potential to lower blood pressure as well as cardio-protective effects in hypertensive rats. This research provides evidence based on which QEYO could be used safely as an adjuvant therapy in eye drops and cosmetics and can be considered an effective choice for preventing hypertension.

223. Creating a Tool to Measure Children's Wellbeing: A PSS Intervention in South Sudan

Abstract

Since 2015, more than 560,000 South Sudanese primary school children have received psychosocial support (PSS) through the USAID-funded Integrated Essential Emergency Education Services program implemented by UNICEF. Several South Sudan-based nongovernmental organizations partnered with UNICEF to train local teachers to implement the PSS activities in child-friendly spaces. To evaluate the impact this intervention had on students' wellbeing and academic performance, a multi-institutional consortium of multidisciplinary partners purposively sampled 2,982 students and 580 teachers in 64 schools from five states in the Republic of South Sudan. Critical to the evaluation's aims was the design of a contextually relevant, rigorously validated instrument to measure students' wellbeing in a region where research on PSS outcomes in education in emergencies is needed. In this article, we first present the process by which these survey instruments were designed through the collaborative efforts of experts on measuring psychosocial support outcomes in conflict settings and experts on the local context. We then describe how we tested for the construct validity of the resulting instrument and present the results of our confirmatory factor analysis of its three-factor model of social wellbeing, emotional wellbeing, and resilience/coping. Finally, based on our process and the resulting instrument, we make recommendations for future research on PSS outcomes in emergency settings.

224. The Role of Individual Absorptive Capacity, Subjective-Wellbeing and Cultural Fit in Predicting International Student's Academic Achievement and Novelty in China

Abstract

This study investigated the role of cognitive-(absorptive capacity), psychological-(subjective-wellbeing) and cultural-fit-factors as predictors of academic achievement-novelty in a Chinese-C9-league-University. We addressed the question of what drive student's achievement of high graduations requirements and innovativeness in their Host-University; focusing mainly on whether interactionistic-nature-(fit-capabilities) are better mechanisms. The quantitative approach was adopted; collect 234 valid data via survey questionnaire (Note 1), and conduct analysis via structural equation modeling technique. We found that individual-absorptive-capacity has significant effect on supervisor-fit, but a non-significant effect on university-fit dimensions of cultural-fit. Subjective-wellbeing significantly affects both dimensions of cultural-fit. The findings further show how supervisor-fit and university-fit indirectly mediate the (absorptive-capacity, subjective-wellbeing)-achievement-novelty relationship. We highlight the importance of cultural-diversity-awareness; considering supervisor-institutional-fit-factors in research-mentorship-development to support international-students 'induction for research productivity in educational-settings.

Abstract

The place of Strategic Management Accounting (SMA) in contemporary business organizations cannot be over-emphasized. Research has shown that organizations that employ the tools of SMA tend to remain competitive in their industry of operation. Therefore, this study examines the adoption of Strategic Management Accounting Practice in selected Nigerian Consumer Goods Companies with a view to establishing the extent of the adoption of this practice. The study made use of primary data obtained from structured questionnaires administered to concerned managers of the companies. Purposive sampling technique was used to obtain a sample size of 18 firms because of the technicality of the subject matter as well as the availability of required respondents. The data generated was analyzed using descriptive statistics. It was found that all 21 SMA practices examined were adopted with Benchmarking having the highest mean statistics of 4.73 and theory of constraint is the least adopted with an average of 3.36. The study concludes that there is a high rate of adoption of the SMA practices and consequently recommends that the others like theory of constraint and kaizen costing that have relatively lower rate of adoption should be considered by companies that are yet to.

Abstract

Guardianship ‘Tutelae’ as a legal concept is as old as mankind. In antiquity, the communal and societal guardian is referred to as a messenger of God, prophet, priest and etc. He or she is believed to be a divine guardian that is appointed by God to lead each community or society, custodis mortalis. However, guardianship as an institution is not restricted to the communal and societal systems alone; it is also important to the family system and to the individual person when he or she is a minor or incapacitated. The institution is important to ensure that the interest of the present and future generations and the care of the people as o whole are preserved. However, the institution has positively undergone various developments in the present. Its importance and its transformations are discussed in this paper from the perspective of Shariah and Positive Laws.

237. Multifunctional Properties of Co-processed Dioscorea rotundata Starch and Abelmoschus esculentus Fruit Gum in Direct Compression of Metronidazole Tablets

Abstract

Background: Co-processing is a process that manipulates available excipients to produce better functional excipients. Objectives: This study aims to prepare a co-processed excipient from starch extracted from Dioscorea rotundata (WYS) and gum extracted from pods of Abelmoschus esculentus fruit (OKG). Methods: The co-processed excipients (CYG) were prepared by co-fusing WYS and OKG at concentrations of 99:1, 97:3, 95:5 to produce CYG1, CYG3, and CYG5, respectively. Then, they were evaluated for their flow and swelling properties. Metronidazole tablets (MT1, MT3, and MT5) were prepared by direct compression. Similarly, tablets containing reference excipients of CombiLac® (MTC) and Prosolv® (MTP) were prepared. The tablets were evaluated for uniformity of weight, crushing strength, friability, disintegration time, and in vitro release. Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) was used to monitor the interaction between the excipients and metronidazole. Results: CYG1, CYG3, and CYG5 have good flow; their swelling profile was between 170% and 200%, more than WYS (80%). FTIR spectra showed no interaction between the excipients and metronidazole. The crushing strength-friability ratio was 42.03>39.65>25.63 for MT3, MT5, and MT1, respectively. MT5 had a longer disintegration time (63.87 s) than MT1 and MT3, which were similar to that of MTC; however, MTP had the longest disintegration time (111.50 s). The disintegration efficiency ratio showed that CYG1 and CYG3 have better disintegration properties than Prosolv®. All the co-processed excipients produced robust tablets comparable to those of CombiLac®. Conclusion: CYG can be exploited as a multifunctional excipient in preparing oral tablet formulations.
