- Abstract
In the present work, new and efficient Cobalt Titanium Boride (Co-Ti-B) catalysts were developed for catalytic hydrolysis reaction of alkaline NaBH4 solution. Hydrogen generation rate was measured using the ternary Co-Ti-B catalyst as a function of different Ti concentration, solution temperature, NaBH4 concentration, and NaOH (a base-stabilizer) concentration. The performance of the system was analyzed from thermodynamic points of view and compared with the pristine Co-B catalyst. In addition to high catalytic efficiency, the catalyst must also comprise important features like high stability in severe conditions and should have high tolerance against deactivation. The highest hydrogen generation rate was obtained with 5% Ti/(Ti + Co) molar ratio, and for this catalyst the optimum fuel concentration was identified as 5 wt.% NaBH4 with 5 wt.% NaOH. Although the effects of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism on weight have clearly been demonstrated, data regarding the effects of relatively minor defects in thyroid function are limited. In the present study, the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and alterations in thyroid function within the normal range was investigated in obese patients. Three hundred fifty-seven euthyroid, obese patients (309 female and 48 male; mean age, 42 years) were included in the study. The patients were divided into 2 groups based on a BMI threshold value of 40 kg/m(2). Thyroid function, BMI, and the epidemiologic characteristics of the patients were retrospectively evaluated. No statistically significant difference was detected between the groups with respect to gender, place of birth, place of residence, smoking habits, and family history. Severely obese patients with a BMI >= 40 kg/m(2) were older and had a lower serum-free thyroxine level (fT4) than obese patients with a BMI < 40 kg/m(2) (P < 0.01). In patients with normal thyroid function, a negative correlation between fT4 and BMI existed. No statistically significant association was detected between BMI and epidemiologic characteristics in euthyroid, obese patients.

The corrosion inhibition characteristics of quaternized 1,(4)-tetrakis[(2-mercapto)pyridine]phthalocyanine (I) and 2,3-octakis[(2-mercapto)pyridine] phthalocyanine (II) on aluminum in 0.1 M HCl solution has been studied by means of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The maximum inhibition efficiency was obtained for compound I with two-electrochemical techniques applied. Langmuir isotherm fits well the experimental data. The inhibition efficiency increases with increase in the phthalocyanine concentration, but decreases with an increase in temperature. The phthalocyanines act predominately as cathodic inhibitor.

- Abstract
The aim of the present work is to investigate the kinetic properties of Co-B nanoparticles which are deposited on graphene sheets by simultaneous chemical reduction of Co+2 and graphite oxides using NaBH4 as the reducing agent. The reduced Co-B/graphene nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, and the effects of the concentration of NaBH4, NaOH, and hydrolytic temperature were discussed in detail. The results show that the concentration of NaBH4 and NaOH indeed exerted a significant impact on the hydrogen generation rate of Co-B/graphene catalysts. Reaction rate of hydrolysis first rises up and then decreases subsequently with the rising of NaOH and NaBH4 concentration. The results show that the Co-B/graphene catalyst has the high catalytic activity with activation energy of 52.45 kJ.mol(-1), and showed high resistance against deterioration and stability as a function of time. The present method is promising for the synthesis of effective supported catalysts for hydrolysis of NaBH4. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia in patients with diabetes are often associated with the ongoing treatment regimen. However, despite changes in treatment modalities, assessment of the causes of hypoglycemia in nondiabetic patients in the presence of severe and recurrent hypoglycemia is very important. The treatment that had been provided for 6 years in a 67-year-old female patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus was discontinued due to hypoglycemic episodes that presented for the previous 2 years. The patient experienced persistent hypoglycemia after cessation of the treatment and was hospitalized for further examination. Spontaneous hypoglycemia with a final diagnosis of insulinoma was established following histopathologic evaluation and was relieved postoperation. Insulinoma is rarely encountered as a cause of hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes. Insulin-secreting tumors should be considered where hypoglycemic episodes occur despite discontinuation of insulin and other antidiabetic treatment with endogenous hyperinsulinemia being noncompliant with the blood glycemic levels.

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of different loading doses of clopidogrel on ST segment resolution on ECG, changes in cardiac enzyme levels and serum levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) in patients with ST elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with fibrinolytic therapy. Methods: Patients admitted to our cardiology clinic with a diagnosis of STEMI and treated with fibrinolytic therapy were included: Group 1 (n=58) received a 300 mg loading dose of clopidogrel, Group 2 (n=55) a 450 mg loading dose and Group 3 (n=59) a 600 mg loading dose. A 75 mg/d maintanence dose of clopidogrel was given in all groups. Results: All demographic characteristics and baseline laboratory parameters were statistically similar among three groups (p > 0.05). When ST resolution periods were compared, most patients in Group 3 had ST resolution at 30 minutes; Group 2 at 60 minutes and Group 1 at 90 minutes (p < 0.05). Peak levels of creatine kinase (CK) and CK-MB were as follows: Group 3, 8th hour, Group 1 and 2, 12th hour. Peak levels of those enzymes were significantly lower in Group 3 than in Group 1 and 2 ( < 0.05). Although basal hs-CRP levels of all groups were similar, the increase in hs-CRP levels at 48 hours was lower with higher clopidogrel loading doses (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In this study comparing three different clopidogrel loading doses, the higher doses provided earlier ECG resolution, earlier and lower peak CK and CK-MB levels and lower levels of hs-CRP.

In this thesis study, a fast implicit iteration scheme called Alternating Cell Directions Implicit method is combined with Approximate Factorization scheme. This application aims to offer a mathematically well defined version of the Alternating Cell Directions Implicit Method and increase the accuracy of the iteration scheme that is being used for the numerical solutions of the partial differential equations. The iteration scheme presented here is tested using unsteady diffusion equation, Laplace equation and advection-diffusion equation. The accuracy, convergence character and the stability character of the scheme compared with suitable iteration schemes for structured and unstructured quadrilateral grids. Besides, it is shown that the proposed scheme is applicable to triangular and hybrid polygonal grids.A transonic full potential solver is generated using the current scheme. The flow around a 2-D cylinder is solved for subcritical and supercritical cases. Axi-symmetric flow around cylinder is selected as a benchmark problem since the potential flow around bodies with a blunt leading edge is a more challenging problem than slender bodies.Besides, it is shown that, the method is naturally appropriate for parallelization using shared memory approach without using domain decomposition applications. The parallelization that is performed here is partially line, partially point parallelization. T he performance of the application is presented for a 3-D unsteady diffusion problem using Cartesian cells and 2-D unsteady diffusion problem using both structured and unstructured quadrilateral cells. 114

Aim Sitagliptin is not associated with weight gain and has neutral effects on body weight. It is unclear whether sitagliptin treatment alters serum ghrelin levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Methods Forty-four subjects with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to receive sitagliptin or medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for 12 weeks. Changes in anthropometric variables, glycemic control, insulin resistance, lipid parameters, and total ghrelin levels were evaluated at baseline and following 12 weeks of treatment. Results Significant decreases in body weight and body mass index were observed over the entire study period in both treatment groups. Glycosylated hemoglobin and postprandial plasma glucose levels were statistically significant decreased in the groups receiving sitagliptin compared with baseline values ( p = 0.021 and p = 0.021, respectively), while they were unchanged in the groups receiving MNT. There was a significant decrease in total ghrelin in the groups receiving sitagliptin ( p = 0.04) compared with baseline values but not in the groups receiving MNT ( p = 0.46) at the end of the 12 weeks. Conclusions In this study of patients with type 2 diabetes, treatment with sitagliptin was associated with a significant decrease in serum ghrelin levels. These results suggest that the neutral effect of sitagliptin on weight might be associated with the suppression of fasting serum ghrelin levels.

Mobile agents (MAs) are a promising technology which directly address physical limitations of mobile devices such as limited battery life, intermittent and low-bandwidth connections, with their capability of providing disconnected operation. This chapter addresses the problem of digital contract signing with MAs, which is an important part of any mobile commerce activity and one special challenging case of computing with secrets remotely in public. The authors use a multi-agent model together with simple secret splitting schemes for signing with shares of a secret key carried by MAs, cooperating to accomplish a trading task. In addition to known key splitting techniques of RSA, authors introduce similar techniques for El Gamal and DSS public key cryptosystems. The objective is to achieve a simple and ubiquitous solution by using the well-known public-key cryptosystem implementations, which conform to the established standards.

A series of thin Pt films were deposited by dc magnetron sputtering directly on a commercial hydrophobic carbon paper substrate having a thin microporous Vulcan-XC72 layer or upon a thin Ti sublayer sputtered on the top of the microporous carbon film. The electrocatalytic properties of the sputtered Pt films toward the oxygen reduction reaction were investigated in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution and in a hydrogen PEM fuel cell. The catalyst with ultralow Pt loading of 22 mu g cm(-2) deposited on a 33 angstrom thick Ti sublayer is robust, mechanically stable, possesses highly developed surface area and improved catalytic efficiency. Its performance as a MEA cathode in a single hydrogen PEM fuel cell (577 mA cm(-2) at 0.4 V cell voltages and a maximum power of 0.954W) proved to be much superior compared to that of MEA with the same cathode Pt loading but without Ti sublayer (173 mA cm(-2) at 0.4 V, 0.231W, respectively). - Abstract
Purpose: Diastolic heart failure is characterized by the presence of heart failure symptoms despite preserved systolic function. Cytokines released during allergic reactions may impair diastolic heart function, either through their direct toxic effects or by inducing coronary artery spasm. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of acute allergic reactions on diastolic heart function. Methods: Fifty patients, randomly selected from those who were admitted to the emergency room between May 2010 and December 2010 with the complaints of rash and itching, and who were subsequently diagnosed with allergic reactions based on the clinical and laboratory findings, were included in the study as the allergy group. Thirty healthy volunteers, in whom the diagnosis of allergy was ruled out based on the clinical and laboratory data, were use as the control group. Diastolic heart functions were evaluated in patients presenting with allergic reaction as well as in control subjects. Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of basal systolic functions, diameters of the cavities and wall thicknesses, and biochemical parameters. Color M mode flow progression velocities, E ratios, E/A ratios and mitral lateral annulus tissue Doppler velocities measured by echocardiography at Day 0 and Day 5 were significantly altered in the allergy group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Impairment in diastolic functions was observed following acute allergic reactions. Acute allergic reactions could be a cause of mortality and morbidity if they lead to the development of diastolic heart failure.

Aim: It is to determine the physical education teachers' views of the extracurricular sportive activities. Methods. In the research, among the qualitative research approaches, intertwined single case study design is used. Among the purposive sampling methods which emerged from qualitative research traditions, frequently used and enables us to study the cases deeply, criterion sampling method is used. For this purpose, 4 physical education teachers (2 women, 2 men), who worked in different types of high schools (Sports high school, Anatolian high school, Science high school, Vocational high school) in the spring term of 2014-2015 school year, took an active role in school's sport teams and has different year of service, were included in the working group. Research data have been gathered by semi-structured interview form which was prepared by the researchers and gives flexibility to the researcher. Interview forms obtained from participators has been subjected to content analysis by two researchers separately, so that conformity percentage between encoders was observed. In the analysis result, by determining the numbers of agreements and divergences, the reliability of the research data have been calculated as % 91 by using Miles and Huberman's (1994) formula (Reliability = agreement / agreement + divergence). Results. As the result of the analysis of the physical education teachers' views of the extracurricular sportive activities, it was determined that students and families do not show necessary interest in these activities, that they see these activities as waste of time and especially families see these activities as an obstacle to their children's success in the school. Conclusion. It was observed that there were problems in performing these activities, the quality and quantity of the facilities and tools and equipment were not enough, also there were problems in sparing appropriate time period for these activities. Aim: In this research, opinions of the headmaster who are working in different grades (primary school, secondary school and high school) with respect to the physical education course were examined. Methods. In the research, out of qualitative research approaches, case study model was utilized. Study group of the research is composed of six headmaster working in the schools related to Ministry of National Education in the city center of Trabzon. As data collection tool, semi-structured interview technique was used. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage and mean) and content analysis were used in data analysis. Results. When the findings of the study were examined, positive and negative opinions for physical education course were detected. In this regard, the reason for negative opinions about the physical education course is generally the fact that there is not any question about physical education course in the exams of Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM) and physical education teachers do not teach their lessons properly. Opinions regarding the fact that the physical education course provides many achievements for the student with respect to its positive effect on physical, healthy, cultural, psycho-social, psychological and mental development and daily life were obtained. Moreover, findings obtained from the research showed that course hours of physical education are inadequate in the weekly course schedule. It is detected that in order to increase the quality of physical education course, there are tasks required to be fulfilled by physical education teachers, school director/board and supreme boards. Conclusions. According to the results of the interview analyses made with the director, it is seen that the director and most of the students evaluated the physical education course as a valuable course which provides socialization while the parent and teachers of other branches evaluated it as an unnecessary and unimportant course. Aim: The purpose of this research is to determine the healthy lifestyle behaviors of employees in the public sector from the point of different variables. Methods. The working group consists of a total of 121 individuals, 48 of which are women (%39,7), 73 of which are men (%60,3), working in three different public bodies in Trabzon. Simple random sampling is used in choosing the working group. The datum is gathered via "Health-promoting Lifestyle Profile" which was ensured reliable and valid by Walker, Sechrist and Pender (1987) and adapted to Turkish by Bahar et al. (2008). The gathered data are analyzed using SPSS 18 package program. Normal distribution conformity of the datum is tested with Kolmogorov-Smirnov before the analysis. Because the distribution of the datum is not normal, non-parametric tests have been applied (p<0,05). In the dual evaluation, Mann-Whitney U test is applied; in situations when there were more than two variables, Kruskall Wallis H test is applied. Cronbach Alpha Coefficient of Internal Consistence is calculated for overall and sub-dimensions of the scale. Overall reliability value of the scale is calculated as 0.94 while reliability value of sub-dimensions is calculated, respectively, in physical activity as 0.88, in nutrition as 0.78, in moral development as 0.77, in interpersonal relations as 0.82, in stress management as 0.76 and in health as 0.85. Results. While the health-promoting lifestyle behaviors of employees in public sector in overall scale and sub-dimensions do not show meaningful difference according to the gender, educational background, profession, marital status, years of service, health problem, the reason for working out (p>0,05); the health-promoting lifestyle of 44 employees (%36,4) in public sector ranging in age from 25 to 35 shows meaningful difference from employees ranging in age from 36 to 46 and from 47 to 59 (p<0,05). There is a meaningful difference in the scale about physical activity between the way the employees spend their time after work hours and health-promoting lifestyle level. This difference is meaningful in favor of the ones who do physical activities after work hours. The meaningful difference between overall scale and sub-dimensions for employees who work out and health-promoting lifestyle is in favor of the ones who do sports. Conclusions. It is confirmed that working out in health-promoting lifestyles of employees in a public body is an important criterion. Also, it can be said that the health-promoting lifestyle of employees who do physical activities after work hours is in good condition. It is also thought that including activities that can enhance the health-promoting lifestyle of employees working in public bodies, can raise the awareness level of employees in this matter. Aim: In this study, it was aimed to analyze on 7
th grade students the effect of teaching approach with dramatization to the students' achievement level about digestive system within science and technology. Methods: In accordance with the determined purpose, the research group consisted of 58 7th grade students attending the science and technology lesson in Ankara Salih Alptekin Secondary School. Research was designed in experimental model with pretest-posttest control group. Placement test including the subject of digestive system which is one of the subjects of science and technology lesson was made for the research group in the form of multiple choice test. After assessment of tests; by matching their points, students who got the same or close point were appointed to the 2 different groups named as control (n=29) and experimental group (n=29). Thus, it was assured that groups had homogeneous structure. For the experimental group, in the direction of 4 domain experts' opinion related to content and application; two hour-long drama session was prepared to perform in school gym. Drama session was prepared in 3-stage model (Preparatory-Warm Up Workings, Performing, Assessment- Discussion) (Adiguzel, 2006). The content of drama is; 1st stage: Touring the exhibition consisting of the big posters and pictures about digestive system, 2nd stage: Coordination track application, which is composed of the stations expressing respectively the process of digestive system and students will complete with various movements and tasks, 3rd stage: This is the last stage; in which each students perform the digestive system organs they want, bodily form is opened to interpretations of other students and by using pastel students draw what they remember about digestive system. With classic teaching approach, digestive system was lectured by relevant teacher to the control group in classroom environment. One week later, pretest prepared for both groups was carried out. SPSS 15.00 package program was used for the statistical assessment of data. Quantities were included in tables by using dependent and independent t-test in analyses. Results: Meaningfulness was tested in the level of 0.05. As a result of assessment, it was seen that average point of experimental group (87.41±11.32) is significantly (t= 2.361, p<0.05) higher than average point of control group (79.13±14.58). In addition, it was found that in each group, average point of female students is higher than average point of male students. As a result, teaching approach with dramatization affected positive and significantly the students' achievement level about digestive system. Conclusion: When drama session formulated in accordance with its purpose is used effectively, it has qualification to contribute considerably to purpose of learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

In this study, the polypropylene-zeolite composite films having 2-6 wt % natural zeolite were coated with a thin film of aluminum (Al) by magnetron sputtering, and the contribution of the Al coating on film properties was investigated. The samples were characterized by EDX, X-ray diffraction, SEM, AFM, UV-visible spectroscopy, and water vapor permeation analyses. The surface of the films coated with a smooth Al film having 98-131 nm thickness. EDX revealed that Al percentage on the surface appeared to be as 8-10 wt % indicating contribution of polymer surface under Al film to analysis. XRD analysis showed that the grain size of Al at the surface was 22-29 nm. The surface roughness increased after Al-coating process. The transmission of coated films was very low for both UV and visible regions of the light spectrum. Permeation analysis indicated that water vapor permeation was lower for Al-coated material. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A series of Co40Fe40B20/SrTiO3/Co40Fe40B20 magnetic tunnel junctions with a bottom-pinned synthetic antiferromagnet have been prepared by sputtering. Devices optimally annealed at 325°C exhibit an exchange bias of about 65mT, and a tunnel magnetoresistance of 2%. The smaller than predicted effect is attributed to the lack of epitaxy between the crystallized CoFeB electrodes and the SrTiO3 (STO) barrier, due to poor crystal quality of the barrier layer. Unlike MgO, well-crystallized, oriented STO does not grow on amorphous Co40Fe40B20. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

- Abstract
Due to its empirical success on few shot classification and reinforcement learning, meta-learning recently received a lot of interest. Meta-learning leverages data from previous tasks to quickly learn a new task, despite limited data. In particular, model agnostic methods look for initialisation points from which gradient descent quickly adapts to any new task. Although it has been empirically suggested that such methods learn a good shared representation during training, there is no strong theoretical evidence of such behavior. More importantly, it is unclear whether these methods truly are model agnostic, i.e., whether they still learn a shared structure despite architecture misspecifications. To fill this gap, this work shows in the limit of an infinite number of tasks that first order ANIL with a linear two-layer network architecture successfully learns a linear shared representation. Moreover, this result holds despite misspecifications: having a large width with respect to the hidden dimension of the shared representation does not harm the algorithm performance. The learnt parameters then allow to get a small test loss after a single gradient step on any new task. Overall this illustrates how well model agnostic methods can adapt to any (unknown) model structure.

Data augmentation is a widely adopted technique for avoiding overfitting when training deep neural networks. However, this approach requires domain-specific knowledge and is often limited to a fixed set of hard-coded transformations. Recently, several works proposed to use generative models for generating semantically meaningful perturbations to train a classifier. However, because accurate encoding and decoding are critical, these methods, which use architectures that approximate the latent-variable inference, remained limited to pilot studies on small datasets. Exploiting the exactly reversible encoder-decoder structure of normalizing flows, we perform on-manifold perturbations in the latent space to define fully unsupervised data augmentations. We demonstrate that such perturbations match the performance of advanced data augmentation techniques -- reaching 96.6% test accuracy for CIFAR-10 using ResNet-18 and outperform existing methods, particularly in low data regimes -- yielding 10--25% relative improvement of test accuracy from classical training. We find that our latent adversarial perturbations adaptive to the classifier throughout its training are most effective, yielding the first test accuracy improvement results on real-world datasets -- CIFAR-10/100 -- via latent-space perturbations., In Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision

Aim: To evaluate the microorganism levels on miswak toothbrushes and to investigate the effect of storage conditions. Materials and Methods: 24 Participants kept miswak toothbrushes in the bathroom and room for one month. Thioglycolate was left in the liquids by cutting 1/3 of the miswak hairs, and incubation was provided for microorganisms. Precise identification of microorganisms is achieved with VITEK® 2 Compact. The periodontal health of the participants was evaluated at the beginning and end of the study by evaluating the bleeding on their plaque, gingival indices, sulcus depths, and probing values. Results: Seventeen (70.80%) participants were female and 7 (29.20%) were male. Half of the participants kept their toothbrushes in the bathroom, and the other half in their room. Lactobacillus spp. was found in 29.2% of toothbrushes, with an average count of 2.43±1.71x102 CFU/ml. Streptococcus mutans were found in 88.3% of toothbrushes, with an average count of 4.05±1.64x102 CFU/ml. Of the toothbrushes tested, 25.0% had Candida albicans present with an average count of 3.18±1.47x102 CFU/ml. Lactobacillus spp. in 29.90% of Miswak toothbrushes, S. mutans was found in 83.30% and C. albicans in 25%. No significant difference was observed in periodontal index values. Conclusion: 84% of miswak toothbrushes are contaminated with persistent bacteria in the first month of use, regardless of storage method. Storing miswak toothbrushes in a humid environment results in higher rates of S. mutans bacterial contamination and survival. Surprisingly, colonization and survival of Lactobacillus spp. and C. albicans were higher in miswak toothbrushes stored at room temperature. It should be replaced with miswak toothbrushes every month instead of the previously suggested three months. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cotton straws are one of the most produced agricultural wastes in Turkey and getting attention by not being consumed as animal feed or an industrial stock and having a huge potential in clean energy production. In this study, different pretreatment methods for the conversion of cotton straw to sugar then biohydrogen and biomethane production from cotton straw were examined. The energy potential of cotton straw in case of an evaluation of these biomass residues was also determined using fuel cell technology. Acid pretreatment provided the highest yield in biogas formation as well as sugar extraction from the raw sample. The highest biohydrogen and biomethane production were obtained as 33 mL H 2 /g VS and 83 mL CH 4 /g VS, respectively. Concomitantly, the maximum power peaks in PEM fuel cell studies were observed as 0.45 W/cm2 and 0.23 W/cm2 with current densities of 1.086 A/cm2 and 0.522 A/cm2 when the fuel cell was fed with pure H 2 and biogas, respectively. This suggested that acid pretreatment is more suitable for cotton straw management in sustainable and renewable ways and the results demonstrated that PEM fuel cell is a promising clean technology for energy generation from cotton straw. Image 1 • Cotton straws were extracted by using three different pretreatment methods. • Acid pretreatment was ~2 times effective than other methods in sugar extraction. • The highest bioH 2 and bioCH 4 production was 33 and 83 mL/g VS, respectively. • The biohydrogen was used as fuel in PEM fuel cells for clean energy generation. • The maximum power and current density in PEMFC were 23 W/cm2 and 0.522 A/cm2. Objective: To evaluate the ovarian reserve function in female patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: This study evaluated 136 subjects, 67 with MetS and 69 controls. Subjects were divided into three age groups. Group I included 49 subjects aged 20–29 years, 22 with MetS and 27 controls; group II included 45 subjects aged 30–39 years, 22 with MetS and 23 controls; and group III included 42 subjects aged 40–49 years, 23 with MetS and 19 controls. Demographic characteristics, anthropometrics, blood biochemistry, and gonadotrophic hormones were compared as total ovarian volume and antral follicle count on ovarian transvaginal ultrasonography. Results: Serum levels of FSH, LH, E2 and progesterone were similar in the MetS and control groups, while testosterone levels were significantly higher in MetS patients than controls, both in the overall population (p = 0.024) and in those aged 20–29 years (p = 0.018). Total ovarian volume was significantly lower in MetS patients than controls, in both the overall population (p = 0.003) and those aged 20–29 years (p = 0.018), while antral follicle counts were similar. Ovarian volume correlated positively with antral follicle count (AFC) (r = 0.37; p < 0.001) and negatively with age (r = 0.34; p < 0.001) and FSH concentration (r = 0.21; p = 0.013). AFC was negatively correlated with age (r = 0.36; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Ovarian reserve function is significantly lower in MetS patients than in healthy control subjects, particularly in women aged 20–29 years.

The wildland-urban interface (WUI) is defined as a geographic area where human developments and flammable vegetation merge in a wildfire-prone environment. Losses due to wildfire have been rising in the past decade, attributed to changes in vegetation growth, fuel availability, and increased land developments in WUI. This paper studies the process of wildfire spread inside WUI communities. The fire spread rate within WUI communities is determined for nine wildfires that were ranked among the most destructive wildfires in North America. An improved quasi-empirical model that considers radiation and fire spotting as modes of fire spread inside a community is proposed. The new model is validated using the documented spread rates during the 2007 Witch and Guejito fires and the 2017 Tubbs fire. The proposed model is computationally efficient and can be used to quantify fire spread rate and the number of affected structures inside a community during a wildfire event. • Communities are being exposed to faster spreading wildfires in recent years. • A streamlined integrative urban fire spread model is proposed. • The proposed model is applied to two case studies in California. • The proposed model is capable of capturing fire progression in WUI communities when compared to real scenarios. Background: The aim of the study was to investigate whether retinal neurovascular structural impairment in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) without clinical signs of diabetic retinopathy (DR) could be detected early via optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA). Methods: In the current prospective, cross-sectional, observational clinical study children and adolescents with T1D without DR were evaluated between December 2018 and May 2019. Retinal neurovascular structures in the macular and optic disc regions were examined in detail and quantitatively assessed using OCT and OCTA. Data from subjects with T1D were compared with data from healthy controls. Whether retinal neurovascular structural changes were significantly associated with puberty stage, diabetes duration, and HbA1c level was also investigated. Results: The T1D group included 110 eyes and the control group included 84 eyes. In the T1D group the mean inside disc vessel density (VD) was significantly lower than that of the control group (p < 0.001), as was the mean superior temporal disc VD (p < 0.043). Puberty stage was significantly associated with retinal thickness, parafoveal superficial capillary plexus VD, and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (p < 0.05). Diabetes duration and HbA1c level was significantly correlated with retinal layer thickness, foveal avascular zone diameter, and superficial and deep capillary plexus VDs. Conclusion: In children and adolescents with T1D without clinical signs of DR, the VD of the disc region is affected earlier than the macular region. In these patients, early neurovascular impairment can be detected non-invasively via OCT and OCTA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
