- Abstract
This volume contains 22 research and survey papers on recent developments in the field of diophantine approximation. The first article by Hans Peter Schlickewei is devoted to the scientific work of Wolfgang Schmidt. Further contributions deal with the subspace theorem and its applications to diophantine equations and to the study of linear recurring sequences. The articles are either in the spirit of more classical diophantine analysis or of geometric or combinatorial flavor. In particular, estimates for the number of solutions of diophantine equations as well as results concerning congruences and polynomials are established. Furthermore, the volume contains transcendence results for special functions and contributions to metric diophantine approximation and to discrepancy theory. The articles are based on lectures given at a conference at the Erwin Schr6dinger Institute in Vienna in 2003, in which many leading experts in the field of diophantine approximation participated. The editors are very grateful to the Erwin Schr6dinger Institute and to the FWF (Austrian Science Fund) for the financial support and they express their particular thanks to Springer-Verlag for the excellent cooperation. Lactoferrin is a major component of biologically important mucosal fluids and of the specific granules of neutrophils. Understanding its biological function is essential for understanding neutrophil- and mucosal-mediated immunity. In this review, we reevaluate the in vivo functions of human lactoferrin (hLF) emphasizing in vivo studies and in vitro studies performed in biologically relevant fluids. We discuss the evidence in the literature that supports (or does not support) proposed roles for hLF in mucosal immunity and in neutrophil function. We argue that the current literature supports a microbiostatic role, but not a microbicidal role, for hLF in vivo. The literature also supports a role for hLF in inhibiting colonization and infection of epithelial surfaces by microorganisms and in protecting tissues from neutrophil-mediated damage. Using this information, we briefly discuss hLF in the context of the complex biological fluids in which it is found. Key words: lactoferrin, host defense proteins and peptides, antimicrobial. Mots-cles: lactoferrine, proteines et peptides de defense de l'hote, antimicrobiens., Introduction Human lactoferrin (hLF) is an 80 kDa iron-binding glycoprotein (Baker and Baker 2004). It is present at moderate to high levels in human milk, tear film, upper airway fluids, [...]

- Abstract
Optics has become one of the most dynamic fields of science since the first volume of Progress in Optics was published, forty years ago. At the time of inception of this series, the first lasers were only just becoming operational, holography was in its infancy, subjects such as fiber optics, integrated optics and optoelectronics did not exist and quantum optics was the domain of only a few physicists. The term photonics had not yet been coined. Today these fields are flourishing and have become areas of specialisation for many science and engineering students and numerous research workers and engineers throughout the world. Some of the advances in these fields have been recognized by awarding Nobel prizes to seven physicists in the last twenty years. The volumes in this series which have appeared up to now contain 240 review articles by distinguished research workers, which have become permanent records for many important developments. They have helped optical scientists and optical engineers to stay abreast of their fields. There is no sign that developments in optics are slowing down or becoming less interesting. We confidently expect that, just like their predecessors, future volumes of Progress in Optics will faithfully record the most important advances that are being made in optics and related fields.

- Abstract
The Handbook presents an overview of most aspects of modernBanach space theory and its applications. The up-to-date surveys, authored by leading research workers in the area, are written to be accessible to a wide audience. In addition to presenting the state of the art of Banach space theory, the surveys discuss the relation of the subject with such areas as harmonic analysis, complex analysis, classical convexity, probability theory, operator theory, combinatorics, logic, geometric measure theory, and partial differential equations. The Handbook begins with a chapter on basic concepts in Banachspace theory which contains all the background needed for reading any other chapter in the Handbook. Each of the twenty one articles in this volume after the basic concepts chapter is devoted to one specific direction of Banach space theory or its applications. Each article contains a motivated introduction as well as an exposition of the main results, methods, and open problems in its specific direction. Most have an extensive bibliography. Many articles contain new proofs of known results as well as expositions of proofs which are hard to locate in the literature or are only outlined in the original research papers. As well as being valuable to experienced researchers in Banach space theory, the Handbook should be an outstanding source for inspiration and information to graduate students and beginning researchers. The Handbook will be useful for mathematicians who want to get an idea of the various developments in Banach space theory.

- Abstract
Recently, researchers found that lactoferrin, when activated, functions as a potent antimicrobial intervention. It protects food by removing harmful bacteria from the surface and by starving bacteria before they can multiply and produce harmful toxins; it also prevents bacteria from re-attaching to food surfaces. As a result this substance has potential to help the agribusiness and food industry supply safer food products to consumers. Lactoferrin: Natural - Multifunctional - Antimicrobial details microbial blocking technology to protect foods from harmful microbes and presents the scientific background on use of this naturally occurring microbial blocking agent as an effective food antimicrobial intervention.

- Abstract
This invaluable volume, written by group of internationally established scientists, presents an overview of the most recent findings on the biology of neutrophils. These cells have become a focus of attention in recent years because of their fascinating biochemistry and molecular biology and their ability to affect the functions of other cells. The book describes, in detail, the molecular events leading to neutrophil activation, migration, microbial killing, production of oxidative radicals and cytokines, and eventually to the death of these cells. It presents new information that has never been discussed in monographs before. It also gives a unique overview of the neutrophil's role in viral diseases, including Aids. Finally, the book describes how to improve the function of neutrophils and use these cells in the treatment of diseases.

Ackerman first recognized verrucous carcinoma as a distinct entity in 1948. Although it occurs in other anatomic sites, most intraoral cases involve buccal mucosa, alveolar mucosa and gingiva. The cells of verrucous carcinoma do not show dysplastic features and mitosis is also absent. The recurrence rate after treatment of verrucous carcinoma is high due to the dysplasia left close to verrucous carcinoma. A case of male patient is being presented who was diagnosed as a case of verrucous carcinoma. Keywords: Verrucous, Carcinoma, Introduction In 1896, Buschke, and subsequently in 1925, Buschke and Loewenstein, described a penile lesion which appeared benign cytologically, yet which behaved in a malignant fashion. Due to its histologic [...]
