Abstract The phase separation dynamics in graphitic anodes significantly affects lithium plating propensity, which is the major degradation mechanism that impairs the safety and fast charge capabilities of automotive lithium-ion batteries. In this study, we present comprehensive investigation employing operando high-resolution optical microscopy combined with non-equilibrium thermodynamics implemented in a multi-dimensional (1D+1D to 3D) phase-field modeling framework to reveal the rate-dependent spatial dynamics of phase separation and plating in graphite electrodes. Here we visualize and provide mechanistic understanding of the multistage phase separation, plating, inter/intra-particle lithium exchange and plated lithium back-intercalation phenomena. A strong dependence of intra-particle lithiation heterogeneity on the particle size, shape, orientation, surface condition and C-rate at the particle level is observed, which leads to early onset of plating spatially resolved by a 3D image-based phase-field model. Moreover, we highlight the distinct relaxation processes at different state-of-charges (SOCs), wherein thermodynamically unstable graphite particles undergo a drastic intra-particle lithium redistribution and inter-particle lithium exchange at intermediate SOCs, whereas the electrode equilibrates much slower at low and high SOCs. These physics-based insights into the distinct SOC-dependent relaxation efficiency provide new perspective towards developing advanced fast charge protocols to suppress plating and shorten the constant voltage regime.

Abstract Cardiovascular ageing is a process that begins early in life and leads to a progressive change in structure and decline in function due to accumulated damage across diverse cell types, tissues and organs contributing to multi-morbidity. Damaging biophysical, metabolic and immunological factors exceed endogenous repair mechanisms resulting in a pro-fibrotic state, cellular senescence and end-organ damage, however the genetic architecture of cardiovascular ageing is not known. Here we use machine learning approaches to quantify cardiovascular age from image-derived traits of vascular function, cardiac motion and myocardial fibrosis, as well as conduction traits from electrocardiograms, in 39,559 participants of UK Biobank. Cardiovascular ageing is found to be significantly associated with common or rare variants in genes regulating sarcomere homeostasis, myocardial immunomodulation, and tissue responses to biophysical stress. Ageing is accelerated by cardiometabolic risk factors and we also identify prescribed medications that are potential modifiers of ageing. Through large-scale modelling of ageing across multiple traits our results reveal insights into the mechanisms driving premature cardiovascular ageing and reveal potential molecular targets to attenuate age-related processes.

We report the results of amino acid racemization (AAR) analyses of aspartic acid (Asp) and glutamic acid (Glu) in the planktic Neogloboquadrina pachyderma, and the benthic Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi, foraminifera species collected from sediment cores from the Arctic Ocean. The cores were retrieved at various deep-sea sites of the Arctic, which cover a large geographical area from the Greenland and Iceland seas (GIS) to the Alpha and Lomonosov ridges in the central Arctic Ocean. Age models for the investigated sediments were developed by multiple dating and correlation techniques, including oxygen isotope stratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, lithostratigraphy, and cyclostratigraphy. The extent of racemization (D/L values) was determined on 95 samples (1028 subsamples) and shows a progressive increase downcore for both foraminifera species. Differences in the rates of racemization between the species were established by analysing specimens of both species from the same stratigraphic levels (n=21). Aspartic acid (Asp) and glutamic acid (Glu) racemize on average 16 ± 2 % and 23 ± 3 % faster, respectively, in C. wuellerstorfi than in N. pachyderma. The D/L values increase with sample age in nearly all cases, with a trend that follows a simple power function. Scatter around least-squares regression fits are larger for samples from the central Arctic Ocean than for those from the Nordic Seas. Calibrating the rate of racemization in C. wuellerstorfi using independently dated samples from the Greenland and Iceland seas for the past 400 ka enables estimation of sample ages from the central Arctic Ocean, where bottom water temperatures are presently relatively similar. The resulting ages are older than expected when considering the existing age models for the central Arctic Ocean cores. These results confirm that the differences are not due to taxonomic effects on AAR and further warrant a critical evaluation of existing Arctic Ocean age models. A better understanding of temperature histories at the investigated sites, and other environmental factors that may influence racemization rates in central Arctic Ocean sediments, is also needed.

Using a conceptual model, we examine how hydraulically controlled exchange flows in silled fjords affect the relationship between the basal glacier melt and the features of warm intermediate Atlantic Water (AW) outside the fjords. We show that an exchange flow can be forced to transit into the hydraulic regime if the AW interface height decreases, the AW temperature increases, or the production of glacially modified water is boosted by subglacial discharge. In the hydraulic regime, the heat transport across the sill becomes a rate-limiting factor for the basal melt, which is suppressed. An interplay between processes near the ice–ocean boundary and the hydraulically controlled exchange flow determines the melt dynamics, and the sensitivity of the basal melt to changes in the AW temperature is reduced. The model results are discussed in relation to observations from the Petermann, Ryder, and 79∘ N glaciers in northern Greenland.

Sleep is vital for our physical and mental health. Studies have shown that there is a high prevalence of sleep disorders and sleep difficulties amongst adults with intellectual disabilities. Despite this, sleep is often overlooked or its disorders are considered to be difficult to treat in adults with intellectual disabilities. There is a significant amount of research and guidance on management of sleep disorders in the general population. However, the evidence base for sleep disorders in adults with intellectual disabilities is limited. In this review paper, we look at the current evidence base for sleep disorders in adults with an intellectual disability, discuss collaborative working between intellectual disabilities psychiatrists and sleep medicine specialists to manage sleep disorders, and provide recommendations for future directions.

Summary: Bacteriophages are a major component of the gut microbiome and are believed to play a role in establishment and stabilization of microbial communities by influencing taxonomic and functional diversity. We show that the activity of lytic and temperate phages can also significantly affect bacterial community structure in a model of extended colonic retention. Intact fresh human feces were incubated anaerobically at 37°C without homogenization and subjected to metagenomic sequencing. We observed subject-specific blooms and collapses of selected bacteriophage and bacterial populations within some individuals. Most notable were striking collapses of Prevotella populations accompanied by increases in specific bacteriophages. In a number of cases, we even observed a shift from one bacterial “enterotype” to another within 48 h. These results confirm that intact feces represents a highly dynamic ecological system and suggests that colonic retention time could have a profound effect on microbiome composition, including a significant impact by bacteriophages.

ABSTRACT: Background: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is an important imaging modality for the assessment of heart disease; however, limitations of CMR include long exam times and high complexity compared to other cardiac imaging modalities. Recently advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology have shown great potential to address many CMR limitations. While the developments are remarkable, translation of AI-based methods into real-world CMR clinical practice remains at a nascent stage and much work lies ahead to realize the full potential of AI for CMR. Methods: Herein we review recent cutting-edge and representative examples demonstrating how AI can advance CMR in areas such as exam planning, accelerated image reconstruction, post-processing, quality control, classification and diagnosis. Results: These advances can be applied to speed up and simplify essentially every application including cine, strain, late gadolinium enhancement, parametric mapping, 3D whole heart, flow, perfusion and others. AI is a unique technology based on training models using data. Beyond reviewing the literature, this paper discusses important AI-specific issues in the context of CMR, including (1) properties and characteristics of datasets for training and validation, (2) previously published guidelines for reporting CMR AI research, (3) considerations around clinical deployment, (4) responsibilities of clinicians and the need for multi-disciplinary teams in the development and deployment of AI in CMR, (5) industry considerations, and (6) regulatory perspectives. Conclusions: Understanding and consideration of all these factors will contribute to the effective and ethical deployment of AI to improve clinical CMR.

Abstract Based on a 7‐member global circulation model ensemble from CMIP6/PMIP4, we compare the regional distribution of Arctic sea ice between a simulation representing the Last Interglacial (LIG) climate, with solar‐forced warming, and an idealized future CO2‐forced simulation with a similar annual sea‐ice volume. The two simulations feature small but robust differences in the Central Arctic and Baffin Bay during summer, and larger differences at the sea‐ice margins in the sub‐Arctic Atlantic and North Pacific sectors during winter. Our results indicate that, under both forcings, sea ice persists north of Greenland until late summer, suggesting that the assumption that this region is the “Last Ice Area” is robust and holds for other climate states. However, we show that processes influencing sea‐ice distribution in winter, such as Atlantification and sea‐ice drift, differ and need to be further investigated.
