A four-act historical ethnodrama critiques the Paris Disneyland, Buffalo Bill Wild West Show and its use of Native Americans as re-enactors of a wild west that never was. The play asks if new stories of the West can be performed and if so how. I contest the transnational narrative that uses Native Americans as vehicles for telling stories about the global Wild West. I situate the critique in Paris Disneyland, but it could as easily be located in Disneyland Parks in Tokyo, London, or Rust, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. These global Wild West shows, with audience participation, enact recurring fantasies of colonial domination over Native Americans. By performing its own reflexive critique, this play is intended to mimic the Paris Wild West Show and expose this ideology.

A poetic text joins the voices of C. Wright Mills, Paulo Freire, and Augusto Boal in a critical dialogue concerning social justice, performance, and critical pedagogy.

The anthropologist Alfred Kroeber named me Ishi, the last man of the stone age. This performance text criticizes that formulation, locating it within the framework of colonial anthropology.

This article is structured along two particularly pressing fault lines: (a) the educational arena and our work as critical pedagogues and engaged public intellectuals, and (b) the location of our research to what we may term the street (or, the spaces in which neoliberal engagements are faced head-on). It presents a discussion on neoliberal fundamentalism, and both political and academic responses to its ravages. It also discusses neoliberalism in the context of subjectivity, and how we can see our way forward in the promotion of social justice imperatives that effectuate change through blood, sweat, and tears.

The reader is asked to imagine a world without data, a world without method, a world without a hegemonic politics of evidence., a world where no one counts, a world without end.

A short three-act play interrogates George Catlin’s highly popular 19th century traveling Indian Gallery, examining Catlin’s paintings, and his use of Native Americans as actors in his plays.

Qualitative researchers are increasingly being called upon to become human rights advocates, to help individuals and communities honor the sanctity of life, and to promote the core values of privacy, justice, freedom, peace, and human dignity. In this volume of plenary papers from the Fifth International of Qualitative Inquiry in 2009, leading qualitative researchers show the various dimensions of the human rights work being done by scholar/activists in the social sciences, education, health care, social services, cultural studies, and other fields.

Two glimpses of everyday life in the United States frame the collection of essays that follow: A few days after the calendar page turned forward into 2011, one of us was at our local regional airport awaiting the departure of a friend. To the right, a twenty-something U.S. Army recruit—smartly dressed in fatigues, carrying a small Nike duffel bag, soft baby-faced features betraying his nervous countenance—sat with his stoic, graying father, a solidly built man wearing weathered sneakers, faded blue jeans, a well-worn wind-breaker, and a mesh army cap. For almost 30 minutes, the two sat quietly together, each clearly contemplating the forthcoming farewell and what lay beyond: a potential deployment abroad, possibly to Afghanistan—the fact that the two might never see each other again.
