214. Estimation of changes in the composition of the Martian atmosphere caused by CO2 condensation from GRS Ar measurements and its application to the rederivation of MGS radio occultation measurements

Abstract

We propose a method to estimate seasonal changes in the composition of the Martian atmosphere, which is influenced by CO2 condensation due to the polar nights at southern high latitudes. The method relies on measurements of the Ar concentration obtained by the Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS) onboard Mars Odyssey. We assume that the Martian atmosphere is composed of CO2, N-2, and Ar, and is vertically well mixed. Since N-2 and Ar do not condense even during the polar nights, the ratio of N-2 and Ar remains constant, and the concentrations of N-2 and CO2 can be estimated from Ar measurements. Estimates of the atmospheric composition were utilized for the rederivation of temperature and pressure profiles in the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) radio occultation measurements (approximate to 70 profiles of approximate to 20,000 profiles in the whole data set) at southern polar latitudes (90 degrees S-75 degrees S) during the autumn, winter, and spring seasons (Ls = 0 degrees-240 degrees). The rederived profiles indicated that use of the standard global composition overestimated the temperature by at least approximately 5 K at Ls = approximate to 120 degrees (midwinter), when the largest CO2 depletion occurred and the CO2 volume mixing ratio fell to 78%. The occurrence and degree of CO2 supersaturation were several times higher and larger, respectively, in the rederived temperature profiles than in the original MGS profiles. This suggests that consideration of CO2 depletion during southern polar nights is needed when studying CO2 supersaturation using radio occultation profiles.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Retrograde cortical venous drainage (RCVD) is the most major risk factor for aggressive behavior of intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF). The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) map for RCVD in patients with DAVF. METHODS: Ten patients with angiographically proven DAVF with RCVD, 2 reference patients with DAVF without RCVD, and 10 control subjects underwent examinations with dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC)-MR imaging. Four patients with DAVF with unilateral RCVD were evaluated, before and after treatment. The calculation of mean rCBV ratio was performed on a hemispheric basis. The mean rCBV ratio was defined as the value on one side (higher value side) divided by that on the other side (lower value side). RESULTS: In all patients with DAVF with RCVD, the rCBV map showed an increase in rCBV of the angiographically proved affected hemisphere. In 2 reference patients with DAVF without RCVD and all control subjects, the rCBV map showed no increase of rCBV. The mean rCBV ratio in patients with DAVF with RCVD was significantly higher than that of control subjects (P = .0002). Treatment response for RCVD was indicated by a decrease of CBV on the rCBV map and by a decrease of 22% in the mean rCBV ratio. CONCLUSIONS: Increased rCBV by DSC-MR correlated with RCVD in patients with DVAF. The assessment with rCBV for RCVD may be more quantitative than that with angiogram.

Abstract

Destruction of cementum and alveolar bone is the main causative event for the exfoliation of teeth as a consequence of periodontitis. Prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) and PGE receptor subtypes (EPs) play an important role in modulating osteoblast-mediated osteoclastogenesis; however, no information is available on the role of PGE(2) and EPs in regulating cementoblast-mediated cementoclastogenesis. We hypothesized that the PGE(2)-EPs pathway also regulates cementoblasts' ability to activate cementoclasts. For these studies, OCCM-30 cells (a mouse cementoblast cell line) were exposed to PGE(2) and specific EP agonists. PGE(2) (100 ng/mL) and EP4 agonist (1 microM) up-regulated RANKL and IL-6 mRNA levels, while they down-regulated OPG mRNA expression. The EP4 antagonist (1 microM) eliminated these effects of PGE(2). PGE(2) treatment of co-cultures of OCCM-30 cells with bone marrow cells induced TRAP-positive cells via the EP4 pathway. These findings suggest that PGE(2) promotes cementoblast-mediated cementoclastogenesis by regulating the expression of RANKL and OPG via the EP4 pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
