The gut microbiota plays an important role in cardio-metabolic diseases with diet being among the strongest modulators of gut microbiota composition and function. Resistant dietary carbohydrates are fermented to short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) by the gut bacteria. Fiber and omega-3 rich diets increase SCFAs production and abundance of SCFA-producing bacteria. Likewise, SCFAs can improve gut barrier integrity, glucose, and lipid metabolism, regulate the immune system, the inflammatory response, and blood pressure. Therefore, targeting the gut microbiota with dietary strategies leading to increased SCFA production may benefit cardio-metabolic health. In this review, we provide an overview of the association between diet, SCFAs produced by the gut microbiota and cardio-metabolic diseases. We first discuss the association between the human gut microbiota and cardio-metabolic diseases, then investigate the role of SCFAs and finally explore the beneficial effects of specific dietary interventions that can improve cardio-metabolic outcomes through boosting the SCFA production.

El objetivo de este trabajo es dar a conocer el proyecto de traducción y edición de la enciclopedia de emblemas e imprese Mundus Symbolicus de Filippo Picinelli que se lleva a cabo en el Centro de Estudios de las Tradiciones de El Colegio de Michoacán. Así, la traducción permitirá al lector moderno y, en especial, a los historiadores del arte descifrar los significados latentes de los símbolos empleados en la producción plástica y literaria, así como en diversos espacios culturales en donde floreció la emblemática.

The recent trends in the development of power systems are focused on the Self-Healing Grid technology fusing renewable energy sources. In the event of a failure of the power system, automated distribution grids should continue to supply energy to consumers. Unfortunately, there are currently a limited number of algorithms for rebuilding a power system with renewable energy sources. This problem is possible to solve by implementing restoration algorithms based on graph theory. This article presents the new modification of Prim’s algorithm, which has been adapted to operate on a power grid containing several power sources, including renewable energy sources. This solution is unique because Prim’s algorithm is ultimately dedicated to single-source graph topologies, while the proposed solution is adapted to multi-source topologies. In the algorithm, the power system is modeled by the adjacency matrices. The adjacency matrixes for the considered undirected graphs are symmetric. The novel logic is based on the original method of determining weights depending on active power, reactive power and active power losses. The developed solution was verified by performing a simulation on a test model of the distribution grid powered by a renewable energy source. The control logic concept was compared with the reference algorithms, which were chosen from the ideas representing available approaches based on graph theory present in the scientific publications. The conducted research confirmed the effectiveness and validity of the novel restoration strategy. The presented algorithm may be applied as a restoration logic dedicated to power distribution systems.

This study concerns the production of hydrogen from a mixture of ethanol and water. The process was conducted in plasma generated by a spark discharge. The substrates were introduced in the liquid phase into the reactor. The gaseous products formed in the spark reactor were hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, acetylene, and ethylene. Coke was also produced. The energy efficiency of hydrogen production was 27 mol(H2)/kWh, and it was 36% of the theoretical energy efficiency. The high value of the energy efficiency of hydrogen production was obtained with relatively high ethanol conversion (63%). In the spark discharge, it was possible to conduct the process under conditions in which the ethanol conversion reached 95%. However, this entailed higher energy consumption and reduced the energy efficiency of hydrogen production to 8.8 mol(H2)/kWh. Hydrogen production increased with increasing discharge power and feed stream. However, the hydrogen concentration was very high under all tested conditions and ranged from 57.5 to 61.5%. This means that the spark reactor is a device that can feed fuel cells, the power load of which can fluctuate.

The present work describes highly efficient hydrogen production from ethanol in a plasma-catalytic reactor depending on the discharge power and catalyst bed temperature. Hydrogen production increased as the power increased from 15 to 25 W. A further power increase to 35 W did not increase hydrogen production. The catalyst was already active at a temperature of 250 °C, and its activity increased with increasing temperature to 450 °C. The further temperature increase did not increase the activity of the cobalt catalyst. The most important advantage of using the catalyst was the increased ethanol conversion to CO2 instead of CO production. As a result, the hydrogen yield was very high and reached 4.1 mol(H2)/mol(C2H5OH). This result was obtained with a stoichiometric molar ratio of water to ethanol of 3.

Arsenic is a metalloid frequently found in contaminated sites due to its easy mobilization in the environment. This has attracted the researchers who have studied this phenomenon from an environmental engineering perspective. Although there is evidence indicating that soil contamination impacts its geotechnical behavior, there is no available information about the changes in the soil’s suction after its contamination. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the soil–water retention curve of arsenic-contaminated soil. An unsaturated soil sample was contaminated with arsenic at two different concentrations and a filter paper calibration curve was developed for each contaminant concentration. Soil contamination decreased the BET area and increased its pore sizes. At a saturation rate of 0.8, the matric suction of the contaminated soils decreased (from 1681 kPa to 260 kPa), while the osmotic suction increased (from 23 kPa to 530 kPa), compared with the natural soil’s condition. Furthermore, the soil’s suction values obtained with the ASTM D5298 calibration curve were higher than those obtained using the calibration curve developed for the contaminated state. Thus, to avoid misunderstanding the mechanical behavior of the unsaturated soils under contaminated conditions, the osmotic suction should be considered and evaluated with the corresponding calibration curve.

The aspiration of the foreign body is a common problem in any pediatric specialization. We present a case of a 3-year-old boy admitted to the hospital after the button battery ingestion. In diagnostic imaging, a bronchoesophageal fistula was found. Gastrostomy and ileostomy were obtained. Due to increasing respiratory failure, the tracheotomy was made and the patient was intubated with the bilateral bronchopulmonary tube. On the 25th day, an attempt to reconstruct the esophagus and trachea was taken. During the operation, the surgery team took the cartilage lobe of the left ear, then switched to the extracorporeal circulation and finally made the esophagus end to end anastomosis and reconstruction of the tracheal loss with cartilage.On the 45th day, the communication between the esophagus and the trachea was found. A esophagostomy was made, and salivary glands were injected with botulinum toxin. The tightness of the anastomosis was confirmed. The patient in the favorable general condition left the ward on the 103rd day of stay. In cases of the trachea, bronchus, or esophagus damages, the prognosis is very serious. The therapeutic success depends on the cooperation of many specialists, both the non-surgical and operational specializations.

The induction of broad and potent immunity by vaccines is the key focus of research efforts aimed at protecting against HIV-1 infection. Soluble native-like HIV-1 envelope glycoproteins have shown promise as vaccine candidates as they can induce potent autologous neutralizing responses in rabbits and non-human primates. In this study, monoclonal antibodies were isolated and characterized from rhesus macaques immunized with the BG505 SOSIP.664 trimer to better understand vaccine-induced antibody responses. Our studies reveal a diverse landscape of antibodies recognizing immunodominant strain-specific epitopes and non-neutralizing neo-epitopes. Additionally, we isolated a subset of mAbs against an epitope cluster at the gp120-gp41 interface that recognize the highly conserved fusion peptide and the glycan at position 88 and have characteristics akin to several human-derived broadly neutralizing antibodies.

A total of 640 broilers were used to determine the effects of strain, sex, and age on hematology and blood chemistry using rapid detection devices. Day old chicks from two genetic lines of common fast-growing and high-yield broiler strains were sexed and allocated to 40 pens (16 birds per pen) containing either male or female and Ross or Cobb strains (n = 10). Venous blood was analyzed weekly using 2 broilers from each pen (n = 20) using the i-STAT® Alinity Handheld Clinical Analyzer, Zoetis Vetscan VS2, and iCheck™ Carotene devices at 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 d, as well as growth performance. Post-mortem health tracking metrics were also recorded on 42 d. Broilers were deemed healthy based on posting data results and performed in accordance with industry standards with males presenting greater BW and reduced FCR than female broilers. Ross broilers displayed greater BW to 14 d with similar FCR compared with Cobb birds. Day of age had a highly significant impact on blood calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, carotene, aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase, bile acids, uric acid, total protein, albumin, globulin, total carbon dioxide, hematocrit, and malondialdehyde. Male broilers had reduced blood sodium, chloride, carotene, uric acid, albumin, and increased total protein, glucose, and total carbon dioxide. Ross broilers had greater blood potassium, and sodium, as well as reduced uric acid, total protein, globulin, and malondialdehyde, compared with Cobb birds. These results demonstrated the effectiveness of point-of-care devices in measuring blood chemistry and hematology in modern broilers. These data can be utilized to determine normal healthy blood ranges in these types of broilers when accounting for strain, sex, and age.

Summary: Rational immunogen design aims to focus antibody responses to vulnerable sites on primary antigens. Given the size of these antigens, there is, however, potential for eliciting unwanted, off-target responses. Here, we use our electron microscopy polyclonal epitope mapping approach to describe the antibody specificities elicited by immunization of non-human primates with soluble HIV envelope trimers and subsequent repeated viral challenge. An increased diversity of epitopes recognized and the approach angle by which these antibodies bind constitute a hallmark of the humoral response in most protected animals. We also show that fusion peptide-specific antibodies are likely responsible for some neutralization breadth. Moreover, cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) analysis of a fully protected animal reveals a high degree of clonality within a subset of putatively neutralizing antibodies, enabling a detailed molecular description of the antibody paratope. Our results provide important insights into the immune response against a vaccine candidate that entered into clinical trials in 2019. : Nogal et al. use electron microscopy polyclonal epitope mapping of BG505 Env-immunized and matched SHIVBG505-challenged non-human primates to identify hallmarks of protection. Additionally, cryo-EM polyclonal analysis of a fully protected animal reveals a high degree of clonality, allowing detailed characterization of a putative neutralizing paratope.

BACKGROUND:Systematic collection of mortality/morbidity data over time is crucial for monitoring trends in population health, developing health policies, assessing the impact of health programs. In Poland, a comprehensive analysis describing trends in disease burden for major conditions has never been published. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides data on the burden of over 300 diseases in 195 countries since 1990. We used the GBD database to undertake an assessment of disease burden in Poland, evaluate changes in population health between 1990-2017, and compare Poland with other Central European (CE) countries. METHODS:The results of GBD 2017 for 1990 and 2017 for Poland and CE were used to assess rates and trends in years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Data came from cause-of-death registration systems, population health surveys, disease registries, hospitalization databases, and the scientific literature. Analytical approaches have been used to adjust for missing data, errors in cause-of-death certification, and differences in data collection methodology. Main estimation strategies were ensemble modelling for mortality and Bayesian meta-regression for disability. RESULTS:Between 1990-2017, age-standardized YLL rates for all causes declined in Poland by 46.0% (95% UI: 43.7-48.2), YLD rates declined by 4.0% (4.2-4.9), DALY rates by 31.7% (29.2-34.4). For both YLLs and YLDs, greater relative declines were observed for females. There was a large decrease in communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional disease DALYs (48.2%; 46.3-50.4). DALYs due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) decreased slightly (2.0%; 0.1-4.6). In 2017, Poland performed better than CE as a whole (ranked fourth for YLLs, sixth for YLDs, and fifth for DALYs) and achieved greater reductions in YLLs and DALYs than most CE countries. In 2017 and 1990, the leading cause of YLLs and DALYs in Poland and CE was ischaemic heart disease (IHD), and the leading cause of YLDs was low back pain. In 2017, the top 20 causes of YLLs and YLDs in Poland and CE were the same, although in different order. In Poland, age-standardized DALYs from neonatal causes, other cardiovascular and circulatory diseases, and road injuries declined substantially between 1990-2017, while alcohol use disorders and chronic liver diseases increased. The highest observed-to-expected ratios were seen for alcohol use disorders for YLLs, neonatal sepsis for YLDs, and falls for DALYs (3.21, 2.65, and 2.03, respectively). CONCLUSIONS:There was relatively little geographical variation in premature death and disability in CE in 2017, although some between-country differences existed. Health in Poland has been improving since 1990; in 2017 Poland outperformed CE as a whole for YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs. While the health gap between Poland and Western Europe has diminished, it remains substantial. The shift to NCDs and chronic disability, together with marked between-gender health inequalities, poses a challenge for the Polish health-care system. IHD is still the leading cause of disease burden in Poland, but DALYs from IHD are declining. To further reduce disease burden, an integrated response focused on NCDs and population groups with disproportionally high burden is needed.

The use of digital multifunction protection relays and their proper integration on the power system and smart grid is an important element. However, the performance of digital relays depends on many factors and needs to be carefully evaluated. These factors may be caused by correct operations with less performance or completely incorrect operations. Frequency deviation is one of those factors which results from unbalanced demand load and generation levels. Load characteristics and generation control response to demand load changes will effect on amount and duration of frequency deviations. Frequency decreases when demand load is higher than generation, whereas it increases when load is less than generation. Protection relays are provided with frequency tracking to reduce the effects of frequency deviations on accuracy of relay decisions. In this paper, traditional frequency tracking technique used on protection relays is modified to give a better performance (less Total Vector Error, TVE) during off-nominal frequency variations. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with traditional tracking using Least Square Error (LSQ), and Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) algorithm without any tracking, which are investigated in MATLAB environment.

In smart cities, unmanned aerial vehicles and self-driving vehicles are gaining increased concern. These vehicles might utilize ultra-reliable telecommunication systems, Internet-based technologies, and navigation satellite services to locate their customers and other team vehicles to plan their routes. Furthermore, the team of vehicles should serve their customers by specified due date efficiently. Coordination between the vehicles might be needed to be accomplished in real-time in exceptional cases, such as after a traffic accident or extreme weather conditions. This paper presents the planning of vehicle routes as a team orienteering problem. In addition, an ‘agile’ optimization algorithm is presented to plan these routes for drones and other autonomous vehicles. This algorithm combines an extremely fast biased-randomized heuristic and a parallel computing approach.

More than one million curable sexually transmitted infections occur every day. Trichomonas vaginalis is one of the main infections responsible for these epidemiological data; however, the diagnosis of this protozoan is still mainly based on microscopic and culture identification. The commercialization of immunological tests and the development of molecular techniques have improved the sensitivity of classical methods. Nevertheless, the fact that trichomoniasis is a neglected parasitic infection hinders the development of novel techniques and their implementation in routine diagnosis. This review article shows the different methods developed to identify T. vaginalis in population and the difficulties in diagnosing male and asymptomatic patients. The importance of including this parasite in routine gynecological screening, especially in pregnant women, and the importance of considering T. vaginalis as an indicator of high-risk sexual behavior are also discussed. Aims Myocardial infarction (MI) is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. Most metabolomics studies investigating metabolites predicting MI are limited by the participant number and/or the demographic diversity. We sought to identify biomarkers of incident MI in the COnsortium of METabolomics Studies. Methods and results We included 7897 individuals aged on average 66 years from six intercontinental cohorts with blood metabolomic profiling (n = 1428 metabolites, of which 168 were present in at least three cohorts with over 80% prevalence) and MI information (1373 cases). We performed a two-stage individual patient data meta-analysis. We first assessed the associations between circulating metabolites and incident MI for each cohort adjusting for traditional risk factors and then performed a fixed effect inverse variance meta-analysis to pull the results together. Finally, we conducted a pathway enrichment analysis to identify potential pathways linked to MI. On meta-analysis, 56 metabolites including 21 lipids and 17 amino acids were associated with incident MI after adjusting for multiple testing (false discovery rate < 0.05), and 10 were novel. The largest increased risk was observed for the carbohydrate mannitol/sorbitol {hazard ratio [HR] [95% confidence interval (CI)] = 1.40 [1.26–1.56], P < 0.001}, whereas the largest decrease in risk was found for glutamine [HR (95% CI) = 0.74 (0.67–0.82), P < 0.001]. Moreover, the identified metabolites were significantly enriched (corrected P < 0.05) in pathways previously linked with cardiovascular diseases, including aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis. Conclusions In the most comprehensive metabolomic study of incident MI to date, 10 novel metabolites were associated with MI. Metabolite profiles might help to identify high-risk individuals before disease onset. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of action and elaborate pathway findings. Prediabetes is a metabolic condition associated with gut microbiome composition, although mechanisms remain elusive. We searched for fecal metabolites, a readout of gut microbiome function, associated with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in 142 individuals with IFG and 1,105 healthy individuals from the UK Adult Twin Registry (TwinsUK). We used the Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg (KORA) cohort (318 IFG individuals, 689 healthy individuals) to replicate our findings. We linearly combined eight IFG-positively associated metabolites (1-methylxantine, nicotinate, glucuronate, uridine, cholesterol, serine, caffeine, and protoporphyrin IX) into an IFG-metabolite score, which was significantly associated with higher odds ratios (ORs) for IFG (TwinsUK: OR 3.9 [95% CI 3.02–5.02], P < 0.0001, KORA: OR 1.3 [95% CI 1.16–1.52], P < 0.0001) and incident type 2 diabetes (T2D; TwinsUK: hazard ratio 4 [95% CI 1.97–8], P = 0.0002). Although these are host-produced metabolites, we found that the gut microbiome is strongly associated with their fecal levels (area under the curve >70%). Abundances of Faecalibacillus intestinalis, Dorea formicigenerans, Ruminococcus torques, and Dorea sp. AF24-7LB were positively associated with IFG, and such associations were partially mediated by 1-methylxanthine and nicotinate (variance accounted for mean 14.4% [SD 5.1], P < 0.05). Our results suggest that the gut microbiome is linked to prediabetes not only via the production of microbial metabolites but also by affecting intestinal absorption/excretion of host-produced metabolites and xenobiotics, which are correlated with the risk of IFG. Fecal metabolites enable modeling of another mechanism of gut microbiome effect on prediabetes and T2D onset. A male patient in his 40s with a history of nephrolithiasis and found in the desert after 10 days without oral intake was admitted to the hospital for severe dehydration, acute kidney injury and rhabdomyolysis. He had acuteonset loss of consciousness during hospitalisation with new left-sided hemiparesis and hemineglect. After haemorrhage was excluded, prompt thrombolysis was given. He later had chest pain and became hypotensive. An echocardiogram revealed pericardial effusion and dilation of the ascending aorta with suspected dissection. Magnetic resonance angiography of the brain and neck reported bilateral parieto-occipital areas of stroke in a watershed distribution and dissection of the right internal carotid artery. CT angiography showed type A aortic dissection from the ascending aorta extending into the bilateral common iliac arteries. Thrombolysis was reversed and the patient underwent ascending aorta replacement, resuspension of the aortic valve and aortic arch debranching at outside facility with complete recovery. Abstract The effect of population size on population genetic diversity and structure has rarely been studied jointly with other factors such as the position of a population within the species’ distribution range or the presence of mutualistic partners influencing dispersal. Understanding these determining factors for genetic variation is critical for conservation of relict plants that are generally suffering from genetic deterioration. Working with 16 populations of the vulnerable relict shrub Cneorum tricoccon throughout the majority of its western Mediterranean distribution range, and using nine polymorphic microsatellite markers, we examined the effects of periphery (peripheral vs. central), population size (large vs. small), and seed disperser (introduced carnivores vs. endemic lizards) on the genetic diversity and population structure of the species. Contrasting genetic variation (HE: 0.04–0.476) was found across populations. Peripheral populations showed lower genetic diversity, but this was dependent on population size. Large peripheral populations showed high levels of genetic diversity, whereas small central populations were less diverse. Significant isolation by distance was detected, indicating that the effect of long‐distance gene flow is limited relative to that of genetic drift, probably due to high selfing rates (FIS = 0.155–0.887), restricted pollen flow, and ineffective seed dispersal. Bayesian clustering also supported the strong population differentiation and highly fragmented structure. Contrary to expectations, the type of disperser showed no significant effect on either population genetic diversity or structure. Our results challenge the idea of an effect of periphery per se that can be mainly explained by population size, drawing attention to the need of integrative approaches considering different determinants of genetic variation. Furthermore, the very low genetic diversity observed in several small populations and the strong among‐population differentiation highlight the conservation value of large populations throughout the species’ range, particularly in light of climate change and direct human threats.
