We describe the design, construction, and performance of VIRUS-P (Visible Integral-field Replicable Unit Spectrograph – Prototype), the prototype for 150+ identical fiber-fed integral field spectrographs for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX ‡ ). VIRUS-P was commissioned in 2007, is in regular service on the McDonald Observatory 2.7 m Smith telescope, and offers the largest field of any integral field spectrograph. The 246fiber IFU uses a densepak-type fiber bundle with a 1/3 fill factor. It is fed at f/3.65 through a telecentric, two-group dioptric focal reducer. The spectrograph’s double-Schmidt optical design uses a volume phase holographic grating at the pupil between the articulating f/3.32 folded collimator and the f/1.33 cryogenic prime focus camera. High on-sky throughput is achieved with this catadioptric system by the use of high reflectivity dielectric coatings, which set the 340-670 nm bandwidth. VIRUS-P is gimbal-mounted on the telescope to allow short fibers for high UV throughput, while maintaining high mechanical stability. The instrument software and the 18 square arcmin field, fixed-offset guider provide rapid acquisition, guiding, and precision dithering to fill in the IFU field. Custom software yields Poisson noise limited, sky subtracted spectra. The design characteristics are described that achieved uniformly high image quality with low scattered light and fiber-to-fiber cross talk. System throughput exceeds requirements and peaks at 40%. The observing procedures are described, and example observations are given.

We present the design, layout and performance estimates for a fiber based Integral Field Unit spectrograph. This instrument is built for flexible use at different telescopes, and in particular for the new 2 m telescope on Mount Wendelstein in the Bavarian Alps. Based on the VIRUS spectrograph for the HETDEX experiment, the proposed instrument will have a fiber head consisting of 267 optical fibers. The large angular field of view of 150 × 75 arcseconds will allow full coverage of the bulge regions of most local late type galaxies in one or two pointings. Realized by the usage of VPH gratings, a R � 2500 and a R � 6800 mode with 850 ˚ and 515 ˚ wavelength coverage will be dedicated to the study of stellar populations and kinematics of late type galaxy bulges.

We present a formalism to infer the presence of merging by comparing the time derivative of the observed galaxy stellar mass function (MF) to the change of the MF expected from the star formation rate (SFR) in galaxies as a function of mass and time. We present the SFR in as a function of stellar mass and time spanning 9=3 the average SFR, is a power law of stellar mass (SFR~M^0.6). The average SFR in the most massive objects at this redshift is 100-500 Msun/yr. At z~3, the SFR starts to drop at the high mass end. As z decreases further, the SFR drops at progressively lower masses (downsizing), dropping most rapidly for high mass (logM>11) galaxies. The mass at which the SFR starts to deviate from the power-law form (break mass) progresses smoothly from logM~13 at z~5 to logM~10.9 at z~0.5. The break mass evolves with redshift as M(z)=2.7x10^10 (1+z)^2.1. We directly observe a relationship between SFH and mass. More massive galaxies have steeper and earlier onsets of SF, their SFR peaks earlier and higher, and the following decay has a shorter e-folding time. The SFR observed in high mass galaxies at z~4 is sufficient to explain their rapid increase in number density. Within large uncertainties, at most 0.8 major mergers per Gyr are consistent with the high-z data, yet enough to transform most high mass objects into ellipticals contemporaneously with their major star formation episode. In contrast, at z11, mergers contribute 0.1-0.2 Gyr^-1 to the relative increase in number density (~1 major merger per massive object at 1.5>z>0). At 10, Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present results from a study to determine how star formation contributes to galaxy growth since redshift z=1.5. Using galaxies from the MUnich Near-Infrared Cluster Survey (MUNICS) and the FORS Deep Field (FDF), we investigate the specific star formation rate (SSFR, star formation rate [SFR] per unit galaxy stellar mass) as a function of galaxy stellar mass and redshift. We test the compatibility of our results with a sample drawn from a larger volume using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that the SSFR decreases as galaxy stellar mass increases, suggesting that star formation contributes more to the growth of low-mass galaxies than high-mass galaxies at all redshifts in this study. We also find a ridge in the SSFR that runs parallel to lines of constant SFR and decreases by a factor of 10 from z=1 to today, matching the results of the evolution in SFR density seen in the ``Lilly-Madau'' diagram. The ridge evolves independently of galaxy stellar mass to a particular turnover mass at the high mass end. Galaxies above the turnover mass show a sharp decrease in SSFR compared to the average at that epoch, and the turnover mass increases with redshift.

(Abridged) We present B, R, and I-band selected galaxy catalogues based on the Munich Near-Infrared Cluster Survey (MUNICS) which, together with the K-selected sample, serve as an important probe of galaxy evolution in the redshift range 0 < z < 2. Furthermore, used in comparison they are ideally suited to study selection effects. The construction of the B, R, and I-selected photometric catalogues, containing ~9000, ~9000, and ~6000 galaxies, respectively, is described in detail. The catalogues reach 50% completeness limits for point sources of B ~ 24.5mag, R ~ 23.5mag, and I ~ 22.5mag and cover an area of about 0.3 square degrees. Photometric redshifts are derived for all galaxies with an accuracy of dz/(1+z) ~ 0.057. We investigate the influence of selection band and environment on the specific star formation rate (SSFR). We find that K-band selection indeed comes close to selection in stellar mass, while B-band selection purely selects galaxies in star formation rate. We use a galaxy group catalogue constructed on the K-band selected MUNICS sample to study possible differences of the SSFR between the field and the group environment, finding a marginally lower average SSFR in groups as compared to the field, especially at lower redshifts. The field-galaxy luminosity function in the B and R band as derived from the R-selected sample evolves out to z ~ 2 in the sense that the characteristic luminosity increases but the number density decreases. This effect is smaller at longer rest-frame wavelengths and gets more pronounced at shorter wavelengths. MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) is an integral-field spectroscopic survey that is one of three core programs in the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV). MaNGA’s 17 pluggable optical fiber-bundle integral field units (IFUs) will observe a sample of 10,000 nearby galaxies distributed throughout the SDSS imaging footprint (focusing particularly on the North Galactic Cap). In each pointing these IFUs are deployed across a 3◦ field; they yield spectral coverage 3600-10,300 Å at a typical resolution R 2000, and sample the sky with 2” diameter fiber apertures with a total bundle fill factor of 56%. Observing over such a large field and range of wavelengths is particularly challenging for obtaining uniform and integral spatial coverage and resolution at all wavelengths and across each entire fiber array. Data quality is affected by the IFU construction technique, chromatic and field differential refraction, the adopted dithering strategy, and many other effects. We use numerical simulations to constrain the hardware design and observing strategy for the survey with the aim of ensuring consistent data quality that meets the survey science requirements while permitting maximum observational flexibility. We find that MaNGA science goals are best achieved with IFUs composed of a regular hexagonal grid of optical fibers with rms displacement of 5 μm or less from their nominal packing position; this goal is met by the MaNGA hardware, which achieves 3 μm rms fiber placement. We further show that MaNGA observations are best obtained in sets of three 15-minute exposures dithered along the vertices of a 1.44 arcsec equilateral triangle; these sets form the minimum observational unit, and are repeated as needed to achieve a combined signal-to-noise ratio of 5 °A−1 per fiber in the r-band continuum at a surface brightness of 23 AB arcsec−2. In order to ensure uniform coverage and delivered image quality, we require that the exposures in a given set be obtained within a 60 minute interval of each other in hour angle, and that all exposures be obtained at airmass less than or similar to 1.2 (i.e., within 1-3 hours of transit depending on the declination of a given field). We present an analysis of the data produced by the MaNGA prototype run (P-MaNGA), aiming to test how the radial gradients in recent star formation histories, as indicated by the 4000AA-break (D4000), Hdelta absorption (EW(Hd_A)) and Halpha emission (EW(Ha)) indices, can be useful for understanding disk growth and star formation cessation in local galaxies. We classify 12 galaxies observed on two P-MaNGA plates as either centrally quiescent (CQ) or centrally star-forming (CSF), according to whether D4000 measured in the central spaxel of each datacube exceeds 1.6. For each galaxy we generate both 2D maps and radial profiles of D4000, EW(Hd_A) and EW(Ha). We find that CSF galaxies generally show very weak or no radial variation in these diagnostics. In contrast, CQ galaxies present significant radial gradients, in the sense that D4000 decreases, while both EW(Hd_A) and EW(Ha) increase from the galactic center outward. The outer regions of the galaxies show greater scatter on diagrams relating the three parameters than their central parts. In particular, the clear separation between centrally-measured quiescent and star-forming galaxies in these diagnostic planes is largely filled in by the outer parts of galaxies whose global colors place them in the green valley, supporting the idea that the green valley represents a transition between blue-cloud and red-sequence phases, at least in our small sample. These results are consistent with a picture in which the cessation of star formation propagates from the center of a galaxy outwards as it moves to the red sequence., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We derive the stellar-to-halo mass relations, SHMR, of local blue and red central galaxies separately, as well as the fraction of halos hosting blue/red central galaxies. We find that: 1) the SHMR of central galaxies is segregated by color, with blue centrals having a SHMR above the one of red centrals; at logMh~12, the Ms/Mh ratio of the blue centrals is ~0.05, which is ~1.7 times larger than the value of red centrals. 2) The intrinsic scatters of the SHMRs of red and blue centrals are ~0.14 and ~0.11dex, respectively. The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) will measure baryonic acoustic oscillations, first discovered in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), to constrain the nature of dark energy by performing a blind search for Ly-α emitting galaxies within a 200 deg2 field and a redshift bin of 1.8 < z < 3.7. This will be achieved by VIRUS, a wide field, low resolution, 145 IFU spectrograph. The data reduction pipeline will have to extract ≈ 35.000 spectra per exposure (≈5 million per night, i.e. 500 million in total), perform an astrometric, photometric, and wavelength calibration, and find and classify objects in the spectra fully automatically. We will describe our ideas how to achieve this goal.

We present the preliminary results of an on-going near-IR low resolution spectroscopic follow-up of a complete sample of 30 bright (K' 1.

We summarize the results obtained from the MUNICS K-band selected Galaxy survey thus far. MUNICS is a wide-area, medium-deep, photometric and spectroscopic survey selected in the K band, targeting randomly-selected high Galactic latitude fields. It covers an area of roughly one square degree in the K and J bands with optical imaging in the I, R, V, and B bands in 0.5 square degrees. The optical rest-frame sizes of 10 of the most massive (~5x10^{11}h_{70}^{-2}M_sun) galaxies found in the near-infrared MUNICS survey at 1.2, Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS letters

We present the morphological analysis based on HST-NIC2 (0.075 arcsec/pixel) images in the F160W filter of a sample of 9 massive field (> 10^{11} M_\odot) galaxies spectroscopically classified as early-types at 1.2 within R_e of our galaxies and we compared them with those of early-types at lower redshifts. We find that the surface brightness of our galaxies should get fainter by 2.5 mag from z~1.5 to z~0 to match the surface brightness of the local ellipticals with comparable R_e, i.e. the local Kormendy relation. Luminosity evolution without morphological changes can only explain half of this effect, as the maximum dimming expected for an elliptical galaxy is ~1.6 mag in this redshift range. Thus, other parameters, possibly structural, may undergo evolution and play an important role in reconciling models and observations. Hypothesizing an evolution of the effective radius of galaxies we find that R_e should increase by a factor 1.5 from z~1.5 to z~0., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 15 pages, 8 figures

We compare the Hβ line strengths of 1.90 < z < 2.35 star-forming galaxies observed with the near-IR grism of the Hubble Space Telescope with ground-based measurements of Lyα from the HETDEX Pilot Survey and narrow-band imaging. By examining the line ratios of 73 galaxies, we show that most star-forming systems at this epoch have a Lyα escape fraction below ∼6%. We confirm this result by using stellar reddening to estimate the effective logarithmic extinction of the Hβ emission line (c {sub Hβ} = 0.5) and measuring both the Hβ and Lyα luminosity functions in a ∼100, 000 Mpc{sup 3} volume of space. We show that in our redshift window, the volumetric Lyα escape fraction is at most 4.4{sub −1.2}{sup +2.1}%, with an additional systematic ∼25% uncertainty associated with our estimate of extinction. Finally, we demonstrate that the bulk of the epoch's star-forming galaxies have Lyα emission line optical depths that are significantly greater than that for the underlying UV continuum. In our predominantly [O III] λ5007-selected sample of galaxies, resonant scattering must be important for the escape of Lyα photons.

We present the analysis of 10 massive early-type galaxies at $z\sim1.5$. They have been identified by means of a near-IR low resolution spectroscopic follow-up of a complete sample of 36 bright (K' $$ 5) selected from the Munich Near-IR ClusterSurvey (MUNICS; Drory et al. 2001). The low resolution near-IR spectra constrain their redshift at $1.2 2$ for all the galaxies and $z_{f} \geq 4$ for the oldest ones. The comparison of the 4000\AA break and of the overall spectral shape of the average spectrum of the 10 galaxies at $z\sim1.5$ with those of their local counterpartsconfirms that field massive early-type galaxies formed the bulk of their stellar mass at $2, Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The purpose of this letter is to compare the quality of different methods for estimating stellar masses of galaxies. We compare the results of (a) fitting stellar population synthesis models to broad band colors from SDSS and 2MASS, (b) the analysis of spectroscopic features of SDSS galaxies (Kauffmann et al. 2003), and, (c) a simple dynamical mass estimate based on SDSS velocity dispersions and effective radii. Knowing that all three methods can have significant biases, a comparison can help to establish their (relative) reliability. In this way, one can also probe the quality of the observationally cheap broadband color mass estimators for galaxies at higher redshift. Generally, masses based on broad-band colors and spectroscopic features agree reasonably well, with a rms scatter of only ~ 0.25 dex over almost 4 decades in mass. However, as may be expected, systematic differences do exist and have an amplitude of ~ 0.15 dex, corrleting with Halpha emission strength. Interestingly, masses from broad-band color fitting are in better agreement with dynamical masses than masses based on the analysis of spectroscopic features. In addition, the differences between the latter and the dynamical masses correlate with Halpha equivalent width, while this much less the case for the broad-band masses. We conclude that broad band color mass estimators, provided they are based on a large enough wavelength coverage and use an appropriate range of ages, metallicities and dust extinctions, can yield fairly reliable stellar masses for galaxies. We investigate the role of industrial replication in the construction of the next generation of spectrographs for large telescopes. In this paradigm, a simple base spectrograph unit is replicated to provide multiplex advantage, while the engineering costs are amortized over many copies. We argue that this is a cost-effective approach when compared to traditional spectrograph design, where each instrument is essentially a one-off prototype with heavy expenditure on engineering effort. As an example of massive replication, we present the design of, and the science drivers for, the Visible IFU Replicable Ultra-cheap Spectrograph (VIRUS). This instrument is made up of 132 individually small and simple spectrographs, each fed by a fiber integral field unit. The total VIRUS-132 instrument covers ~29 sq. arcminutes per observation, providing integral field spectroscopy from 340 to 570 nm, simultaneously, of 32,604 spatial elements, each 1 sq. arcsecond on the sky. VIRUS-132 will be mounted on the 9.2 m Hobby-Eberly Telescope and fed by a new wide-field corrector with a science field in excess of 16.5 arcminutes diameter. VIRUS represents a new approach to spectrograph design, offering the science multiplex advantage of huge sky coverage for an integral field spectrograph, coupled with the engineering multiplex advantage of >102 spectrographs making up a whole.

We present XMM-Newton data centered on one of the MUNICS Near Infrared Cluster Survey fields (S2F1) and we discuss the X-ray properties of the 6 X-ray emitting EROs found. For one of them we have already obtained the redshift using near-infrared spectroscopic data, while for the remaining 5 EROs the analysis is based on photometric redshifts. We find evidence for the presence of an X-ray obscured QSO in at least 5 out of the 6 X-ray emitting EROs. For these 5 objects we derive intrinsic (2-10 keV) luminosities in excess of 10^44 erg/s and intrinsic column densities higher than 10^22 cm^-2. These values have been obtained through a basic X-ray spectral analysis for the three brightest sources and through the analysis of the hardness ratios for the remaining two. All of these 5 X-ray emitting EROs appear extended in the optical/near-infrared bands indicating that the host galaxy emission dominates at these wavelengths. This suggests that the hosted AGNs are likely to be absorbed also in the optical/near-infrared bands: i.e. they are likely X-ray obscured possible type 2 QSOs. For the remaining ERO the presence of an AGN is suggested both by its high 0.5-2 keV luminosity (L(0.5-2 keV)~10^43 erg/s) and by its X-ray-to-optical flux ratio. In this case the quality of the present data prevents us from placing firm constraints on the AGN type hosted. Finally, the near-IR spectrum obtained for one of the 6 EROs classifies the host galaxy as an elliptical at z~1.7 with a stellar mass well in excess of 10^11 M_\odot. We present the results of TNG near-IR low resolution spectroscopy of two (S7F5-254 and S7F5-45) sources belonging to a complete sample of 15 EROs with K'5 selected from the MUNICS Survey. Both the spectra show a sharp drop in the continuum which can be ascribed only to the Balmer break. This places them at 1.23.5 and z_f>2 for the two EROs respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A; 7 pages, 5 figures

We present the results of completeness simulations for the detection of point sources as well as redshifted elliptical and spiral galaxies in the K'-band images of the Munich Near-Infrared Cluster Survey (MUNICS). The main focus of this work is to quantify the selection effects introduced by threshold-based object detection algorithms used in deep imaging surveys. Therefore, we simulate objects obeying the well-known scaling relations between effective radius and central surface brightness, both for de Vaucouleurs and exponential profiles. The results of these simulations, while presented for the MUNICS project, are applicable in a much wider context to deep optical and near-infrared selected samples. We investigate the detection probability as well as the reliability for recovering the true total magnitude with Kron-like (adaptive) aperture photometry. The results are compared to the predictions of the visibility theory of Disney and Phillipps in terms of the detection rate and the lost-light fraction. Additionally, the effects attributable to seeing are explored. The results show a bias against detecting high-redshifted massive elliptical galaxies in comparison to disk galaxies with exponential profiles, and that the measurements of the total magnitudes for intrinsically bright elliptical galaxies are systematically too faint. Disk galaxies, in contrast, show no significant offset in the magnitude measurement of luminous objects. The FORS Deep Field project is a multi-colour, multi-object spectroscopic investigation of an approx. 7 times 7 region near the south galactic pole based mostly on observations carried out with the FORS instruments attached to the VLT telescopes. It includes the QSO Q 0103-260 (z = 3.36). The goal of this study is to improve our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies in the young Universe. In this paper the field selection, the photometric observations, and the data reduction are described. The source detection and photometry of objects in the FORS Deep Field is discussed in detail. A combined B and I selected UBgRIJKs photometric catalog of 8753 objects in the FDF is presented and its properties are briefly discussed. The formal 50% completeness limits for point sources, derived from the co-added images, are 25.64, 27.69, 26.86, 26.68, 26.37, 23.60 and 21.57 in U, B, g, R, I, J and Ks (Vega-system), respectively. A comparison of the number counts in the FORS Deep Field to those derived in other deep field surveys shows very good agreement., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures (included), accepted for publication in A&A

We use broadband photometry extending from the rest-frame UV to the near-IR to fit the individual spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 63 bright (L(Ly-alpha) > 10^43 ergs/s) Ly-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) in the redshift range 1.9 < z < 3.6. We find that these LAEs are quite heterogeneous, with stellar masses that span over three orders of magnitude, from 7.5 < log M < 10.5. Moreover, although most LAEs have small amounts of extinction, some high-mass objects have stellar reddenings as large as E(B-V) ~0.4. Interestingly, in dusty objects the optical depths for Ly-alpha and the UV continuum are always similar, indicating that Ly-alpha photons are not undergoing many scatters before escaping their galaxy. In contrast, the ratio of optical depths in low-reddening systems can vary widely, illustrating the diverse nature of the systems. Finally, we show that in the star formation rate (SFR)-log mass diagram, our LAEs fall above the "main-sequence" defined by z ~ 3 continuum selected star-forming galaxies. In this respect, they are similar to sub-mm-selected galaxies, although most LAEs have much lower mass., Accepted to the ApJ

The Munich Near-IR Cluster Survey (MUNICS) is a K’-selected survey uniformly covering 1 square degree in the J and K’ near-IR bands. The survey area consists of 8 13.2 × 26.2 arcmin randomly selected fields at high galactic latitude, as well as 13 7 × 7 arcmin fields targeted towards 0.6 < z < 1.5 QSOs. The 3σ detection limits for a point source are 19.5 in the K’-band and 21.5 in the J-band. The data have been acquired at the 3.5m telescope at Calar Alto Observatory using the Ω — Prime camera.

Using a sample of 57 VLT FORS spectra in the redshift range 1.37, Comment: accepted to be published in A&A, 12 pages, 11 figures Latex2e using aa.cls

We present the B-band Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) of 60 late-type galaxies with redshifts 0.1-1. The galaxies were selected from the FORS Deep Field with a limiting magnitude of R=23. Spatially resolved rotation curves were derived from spectra obtained with FORS2 at the VLT. High-mass galaxies with v_max>=150 km/s show little evolution, whereas the least massive systems in our sample are brighter by about 1-2 mag compared to their local counterparts. For the entire distant sample, the TFR slope is flatter than for local field galaxies (-5.77+-0.45 versus -7.92+-0.18). Thus, we find evidence for evolution of the slope of the TFR with redshift on the 3-sigma level. This is still true when we subdivide the sample into three redshift bins. We speculate that the flatter tilt of our sample is caused by the evolution of luminosities and an additional population of blue galaxies at z>=0.2. The mass dependence of the TFR evolution also leads to variations for different galaxy types in magnitude-limited samples, suggesting that selection effects can account for the discrepant results of previous TFR studies on the luminosity evolution of late-type galaxies., ApJL accepted version, comments welcome!

We presented the design for a fiber based integral field unit spectrograph for the new two meter class Wendelstein telescope in Bavaria, Germany. The proposed spectrograph will feature a fiberhead consisting of 246 individual optical fibers and a field of view of approximately 1′ × 2′ and two different spectral resolution modes optimized for the study of bulges of local late-type galaxies.

We present new results on the spectrally resolved Lyman-alpha (LyA) emission of three LyA emitting field galaxies at z~2.4 with high LyA equivalent width (>100 Angstroms) and LyA luminosity (~10^43 erg/s). At 120 km/s (FWHM) spectral resolution, the prominent double-peaked LyA profile straddles the systemic velocity, where the velocity zero-point is determined from spectroscopy of the galaxies' rest-frame optical nebular emission lines. The average velocity offset from systemic of the stronger redshifted emission component for our sample is 176 km/s while the average total separation between the redshifted and main blueshifted emission components is 380 km/s. These measurements are a factor of ~2 smaller than for UV continuum-selected galaxies that show LyA in emission with lower LyA equivalent width. We compare our LyA spectra to the predicted line profiles of a spherical "expanding shell" LyA radiative transfer grid that models large-scale galaxy outflows. Specifically blueward of the systemic velocity where two galaxies show a weak, highly blueshifted (by ~1000 km/s) tertiary emission peak, the model line profiles are a relatively poor representation of the observed spectra. Since the neutral gas column density has a dominant influence over the shape of the LyA line profile, we caution against equating the observed LyA velocity offset with a physical outflow velocity, especially at lower spectral resolution where the unresolved LyA velocity offset is a convoluted function of several degenerate parameters. Referring to rest-frame ultraviolet and optical Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we find that galaxy-galaxy interactions may play an important role in inducing a starburst that results in copious LyA emission, as well as perturbing the gas distribution and velocity field which have strong influence over the LyA emission line profile.

We present an analysis of the luminosities and equivalent widths of the 284 z < 0.56 [O II]-emitting galaxies found in the 169 square arcmin pilot survey for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). By combining emission-line fluxes obtained from the Mitchell spectrograph on the McDonald 2.7-m telescope with deep broadband photometry from archival data, we derive each galaxy's de-reddened [O II] 3727 luminosity and calculate its total star formation rate. We show that over the last ~5 Gyr of cosmic time there has been substantial evolution in the [O II] emission-line luminosity function, with L* decreasing by ~0.6 +/-0.2 dex in the observed function, and by ~0.9 +/-0.2 dex in the de-reddened relation. Accompanying this decline is a significant shift in the distribution of [O II] equivalent widths, with the fraction of high equivalent-width emitters declining dramatically with time. Overall, the data imply that the relative intensity of star formation within galaxies has decreased over the past ~5 Gyr, and that the star formation rate density of the universe has declined by a factor of ~2.5 between z ~ 0.5 and z ~ 0. We describe the construction of a template set of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for the estimation of photometric redshifts of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) with a Bayesian template fitting method. We use the Marcario Low Resolution Spectrograph (LRS) at the Hobby-Eberly-Telescope (HET) to study the kinematics of pseudobulges and classical bulges in 45 S0-Sc type galaxies in the nearby universe. Our high-resolution (instrumental σ ≈ 39 km s−1) spectra allo only to resolve the typical velocity dispersions of our targets but also to derive the h3 and h4 Gauss-Hermite moments. We demonstrate for the first time that purely kinematic diagnostics of the bulge dichotomy agree systematically with those based on Sérsic index. Low Sérsic index bulges have both increased rotational support (higher v/σ values) and on average lower central velocity dispersions. Pseudobulges have systematically shallower velocity dispersion profiles. The same correlation also holds when visual morphologies are used to diagnose bulge type. Finally, we present evidence for formerly undetected counter rotation in the two systems NGC 3945 and NGC 4736. With these, a total of 16% of the systems in or sample show signs for stellar counter rotation.

We present results of a statistical study of the cosmic evolution of the mass-dependent major-merger rate since z = 1. A stellar mass limited sample of close major-merger pairs (the CPAIR sample) was selected from the archive of the COSMOS survey. Pair fractions at different redshifts derived using the CPAIR sample and a local K-band-selected pair sample show no significant variations with stellar mass. The pair fraction exhibits moderately strong cosmic evolution, with the best-fitting function of f_(pair) = 10^(–1.88(± 0.03))(1 + z)^(2.2(± 0.2)). The best-fitting function for the merger rate is R_(mg) (Gyr^(–1)) = 0.053 × (M_(star)/10^(10.7) M_☉ )^(0.3)(1 + z)^(2.2)/(1 + z/8). This rate implies that galaxies of M_(star) ~ 10^(10)-10^(11.5) M_☉ have undergone ~0.5-1.5 major mergers since z = 1. Our results show that, for massive galaxies (M_(star) ≥ 10^(10.5) M_☉) at z ≤ 1, major mergers involving star-forming galaxies (i.e., wet and mixed mergers) can account for the formation of both ellipticals and red quiescent galaxies (RQGs). On the other hand, major mergers cannot be responsible for the formation of most low mass ellipticals and RQGs of M_(star) ≾ 10^(10.3) M_☉. Our quantitative estimates indicate that major mergers have significant impact on the stellar mass assembly of the most massive galaxies (M_(star) ≥ 10^(11.3) M_☉), but for less massive galaxies the stellar mass assembly is dominated by the star formation. Comparison with the mass-dependent (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRG) rates suggests that the frequency of major-merger events is comparable to or higher than that of (U)LIRGs.

We study the escape of Ly-alpha photons from Ly-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) and the overall galaxy population using a sample of 99 LAEs at 1.9

We present Keck/NIRSPEC spectroscopic observations of three Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z ~ 2.3 discovered with the HETDEX pilot survey. We detect Halpha, [OIII], and Hbeta emission from two galaxies at z = 2.29 and 2.49, designated HPS194 and HPS256, respectively, representing the first detection of multiple rest-frame optical emission lines in galaxies at high-redshift selected on the basis of their Lyman alpha emission. The redshifts of the Lyman alpha emission from these galaxies are offset redward of the systemic redshifts by Delta_v = 162 +/- 37 (photometric) +/- 42 (systematic) km/s for HPS194, and Delta_v = 36 +/- 35 +/- 18 km/s for HPS256. An interpretation for HPS194 is that a large-scale outflow may be occurring in its interstellar medium. The emission line ratios imply that neither LAE hosts an active galactic nucleus. Using the upper limits on the [NII] emission we place meaningful constraints on the gas-phase metallicities in these two LAEs of Z < 0.17 and < 0.28 Zsol (1 sigma). Measuring the stellar masses of these objects via spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting (~ 10^10 and 6 x 10^8 Msol, respectively), we study the nature of LAEs in a mass-metallicity plane. At least one of these two LAEs appears to be more metal poor than continuum-selected star-forming galaxies at the same redshift and stellar mass, implying that objects exhibiting Lyman alpha emission may be systematically less chemically enriched than the general galaxy population. We use the SEDs of these two galaxies to show that neglecting the emission lines when fitting stellar population models to the observed photometry can result in overestimates of the population age by orders of magnitude, and the stellar mass by a factor of ~ 2. We present a catalog of emission-line galaxies selected solely by their emission-line fluxes using a wide-field integral field spectrograph. This work is partially motivated as a pilot survey for the upcoming Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). We describe the observations, reductions, detections, redshift classifications, line fluxes, and counterpart information for 397 emission-line galaxies detected over 169 sq.arcmin with a 3500-5800 Ang. bandpass under 5 Ang. full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) spectral resolution. The survey's best sensitivity for unresolved objects under photometric conditions is between 4-20 E-17 erg/s/sq.cm depending on the wavelength, and Ly-alpha luminosities between 3-6 E42 erg/s are detectable. This survey method complements narrowband and color-selection techniques in the search for high redshift galaxies with its different selection properties and large volume probed. The four survey fields within the COSMOS, GOODS-N, MUNICS, and XMM-LSS areas are rich with existing, complementary data. We find 104 galaxies via their high redshift Ly-alpha emission at 1.9 44 sq.arcsec which appear to be extended Ly-alpha nebulae. We also find three high-z objects with rest frame Ly-alpha equivalent widths above the level believed to be achievable with normal star formation, EW(rest)>240 Ang.

Several models have predicted that stars could form inside galactic outflows and that this would be a new major mode of galaxy evolution. Observations of galactic outflows have revealed that they host large amounts of dense and clumpy molecular gas, which provide conditions suitable for star formation. We have investigated the properties of the outflows in a large sample of galaxies by exploiting the integral field spectroscopic data of the large MaNGA-SDSS4 galaxy survey. We find that star formation occurs inside at least half of the galactic outflows in our sample. We also show that even if star formation is prominent inside many other galactic outflows, this may have not been revealed as the diagnostics are easily dominated by the presence of even faint AGN and shocks. If very massive outflows typical of distant galaxies and quasars follow the same scaling relations observed locally, then the star formation inside high-z outflows can be up to several 100 Msun/yr and could contribute substantially to the early formation of the spheroidal component of galaxies. Star formation in outflows can also potentially contribute to establishing the scaling relations between black holes and their host spheroids. Moreover, supernovae exploding on large orbits can chemically enrich in-situ and heat the circumgalactic and intergalactic medium. Our Milky Way provides a unique test case for galaxy evolution models, thanks to our privileged position within the Milky Way's disc. This position also complicates comparisons between the Milky Way and external galaxies, due to our inability to observe the Milky Way from an external point of view. Milky Way analog galaxies offer us a chance to bridge this divide by providing the external perspective that we otherwise lack. However, over-precise definitions of "analog" yield little-to-no galaxies, so it is vital to understand which selection criteria produce the most meaningful analog samples. To address this, we compare the properties of complementary samples of Milky Way analogs selected using different criteria. We find the Milky Way to be within 1$\sigma$ of its analogs in terms of star-formation rate and bulge-to-total ratio in most cases, but we find larger offsets between the Milky Way and its analogs in terms of disc scale length; this suggests that scale length must be included in analog selections in addition to other criteria if the most accurate analogs are to be selected. We also apply our methodology to the neighbouring Andromeda galaxy. We find analogs selected on the basis of strong morphological features to display much higher star-formation rates than Andromeda, and we also find analogs selected on Andromeda's star-formation rate to over-predict Andromeda's bulge extent.
